[03:30] hi [03:30] look, this is the thing [03:30] Hey [03:30] i want to install ubuntu in my brand new vista system [03:30] but it comes with a lot of small partitions [03:31] well 3, but thats still too much for a brand new system [03:31] and i want to know which partitions could I wipe out. [03:31] do you have vista? [03:31] so the first problem is the 4 primary partition limit. [03:31] is there one actually? [03:31] you will need to create an extended partition and create logicals inside that [03:32] oh i want that [03:32] no I dont use vista.. and I wont let my frineds do vista [03:32] but there goes my other problem, the os partition, which occupies the 90% of the hdd is not inside the extended... [03:32] if i want to resize it, i need to turn off the 'round to cylinders option [03:32] how big is the extennnded and what is on it now [03:32] i dont know what that is, and if its evil or if its not [03:33] woli, best to break partitions on cylinder boundaries [03:33] the extended is 2,50GB big and only a fat partition called MEDIA DIRECT is on it... [03:33] how big is the extended and what is on it now [03:33] that [03:34] 2.5 gig extended only [03:34] yes... [03:34] my hdd is 500 gb big.. [03:34] is it a big problem? [03:34] 2.5 gig extended is worthless [03:35] it is [03:35] i can resize it, can't i? [03:35] make sure it has nothing you need.. and delete it and the extended, then resize your vista partition [03:35] what happens if i turn the 'round to cylinders option' off? [03:35] then crerate a new extended with two ext3 and one swap [03:36] woli, why are you needing to do that [03:36] i am an order freak.. [03:37] not a good idea.. you will waste space [03:37] will i? [03:37] well, i managed to do it rounding cylinders... i just unchecked it and checked it again... it worked... [03:37] defrag vista, twice... before you resize [03:37] the problem is now i have 3 unallocated separate partitions [03:37] ok i will... [03:38] do i still need to, even when being able to do it rounding to cylinders? [03:39] use gparted .. the gparted livecd would be my choice but you can run it from ubuntu livecd, there are occasionally issues whickh is why I use the standalone gparted [03:39] woli, on a new system I doubt you need to defrag, but safer to do it.. twice [03:39] well, i am in the live session, with gpa7rted [03:40] but ok, i will return with defraing done... [03:40] Ok, so you have the basics of what you need [03:40] i will just erase the recovery partition, or should i leave it for now? [03:40] I will NOT be here [03:40] you will not? [03:40] leave the recovery partition [03:40] Jack_Sparrow: why? [03:41] I told You I was leaving and could only give you a couple minutes [03:41] look, i will only use vista for games and other software [03:41] ok, ill look for somebody else then [03:41] leave the recovery partition..
