[00:00] HenryHeron: there are different versions of kde at the moment [00:01] HenryHeron: kde 3.5 is the most stable but oldest, kde 4.1 is the kubuntu intrepid default, kde 4.2 is only released in a few days, but the RC is already very usable === andre is now known as Guest40722 [00:01] HenryHeron: depending on which version you choose, the packages/sources are different [00:01] fliegenderfrosch It will work w/ 8.10? [00:02] HenryHeron: yes, i’m using 8.10 with kde 4.2 release candidate [00:02] and it works fine [00:03] fliegenderfrosch so I can use either synaptic package manager or apt-get (terminal) what do I look for (for 4.2)? [00:03] HenryHeron: in general, you have to choose between the 3.5 and the 4.x series. 3.5 is more mature, but 4.x is where all the new development happens and it is already very usable [00:03] kDE 4.2 RC 1: http://www.kubuntu.org/news/kde-4.2-rc1 [00:03] yes, but for the 4.2 RC you have to add new sources [00:04] Dr_willis: thx, that’s what i was about to post :) [00:04] fliegenderfrosch Do I hear a nother alternative, i.e., build from source? [00:05] HenryHeron: you could build it from source as well, but the packages are definitely the most comfortable solution [00:05] HenryHeron: plus you will probably get an upgrade to 4.2 final automatically [00:06] fliegenderfrosch I agree... sight unseen. The instructions would be on the link Dr_willis mentioned? [00:06] HenryHeron: but remember that 4.2 isn’t officially supported by the kubuntu team [00:06] HenryHeron: exactly [00:07] HenryHeron: still I find 4.2 to be more usable than the official 4.1 packages [00:07] fliegenderfrosch Apparently ubuntu intrepid isn [00:07] fliegenderfrosch either... I'm having a hard time getting any help. [00:08] HenryHeron: you mean the gnome version? I’m actually quite happy with it (on my laptop), but that’s probably different for everyone [00:09] fliegenderfrosch Yes, exactly. [00:10] HenryHeron: if your problems are related to the kernel or drivers, changing from gnome to kde won’t help however [00:10] fliegenderfrosch It may be something I did, as I built a number of rather complex programs... then the desktop went fluey... (high tech term)... [00:11] * Dr_willis is confused... [00:11] but im also holding the grandson.. so im distracted.. :P [00:11] fliegenderfrosch Ok, I'll go check out the recommended web site now, thanks all! [00:13] HenryHeron: np [00:13] fliegenderfrosch One last note as I saw your last message... getting the tools/utilities to understand what is going wrong seems a real problem in Linux? No? What to do? [00:14] HenryHeron: which tools/utilities do you mean? [00:15] fliegenderfrosch I'm thinking of trying to be able to understand how to tell if the problem/s are related as you suggest, kernel or driver. [00:24] Am I the only one here? [00:25] yes [00:25] wow [00:25] da: do you feel lonely now? [00:26] no, I got my wife in the other room watching TV. [00:26] oh ! you are the one then [00:27] I don/t know. [00:37] yes Qt configuration GUI opened [00:38] I'm having two problems with the Network manager:1. I can't have more than one set to autoconnect, and 2. [01:19] it installs addons ;) [01:19] no, I was having trouble with the latex-suite [01:19] there's a bug where the functions don't get mapped correctly, when installing latexsuite via aptitude [01:19] installing it with the addonmanager somehow solves the problem [01:20] could remove the thing both ways.. and then reinstall it the way you want I guess. [01:34] kaddi, well if the sytem still works now.. you may want to jkust leave it alone.. or are you saying the vi-latex thing no longer works? [01:35] no its working, it's just throwing a lot of messages and i have to confirm 2 error messages before i can actually open vi [01:35] which, in the long term, is rather annoying [01:36] Trying to install Kubuntu 8.04 or 8.10.
