bsnyderi just installed ubuntu 8.10 desktop using the all alt cd - it worked just fine19:05
bsnyderthen i installed the edubuntu 8.10 add-on, rebooting and now x won't start19:06
bsnyderi'm seeing errors like, x server fails to start... no screens found19:06
bsnyderso i went thru both installs again - same problem19:07
bsnyderany suggestions? has anyone else experienced this?19:07
sbalneavDon't think so, but maybe you could tell us what kind of video hardware you have?19:08
sbalneavit may be a simple fix.19:08
sbalneavFor 8.10, there shouldn't be anything in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.  Is yours empty?19:11
bsnyderit's an older pc so i don't know off-hand - let me try to take a peek at the card19:11
bsnyderit's an ATI card, but i'm not sure what model19:14
bsnyderand the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is not empty19:14
bsnyderit contains some basic stuff but not enough for X to boot19:14
bsnydersbalneav: ^^^19:16
sbalneavthen what I'd try doing is moving it out of the way, and replacing it with an empty xorg.conf19:17
sbalneavsee if that works.19:17
bsnyderok, i'll give that a shot19:17
bsnydernope, no dice19:19
sbalneavhow are you restarting?  With invoke-rc.d gdm restart?19:20
sbalneavI'm off to a meeting.  However, failing that, you could always do an "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to reconfigure the X server.19:24
sbalneavI'll be back in a couple of hours if you still need me.19:24
bsnyderwell that's what i've been doing, but it only walks me thru the keyboard setup19:24
bsnyderfor some reason, it's not walkign me thru the video config at all19:24
Lnshrmm...ubuntu wiki format is so strange. When logged out of my acct, it doesn't show the horizontal lines under the == Title == headers, but when I *am* logged in, it shows them. I've cleared my cache and all, to.19:28
