I see I forgot to "leave" on Friday - DOH! === DRNK-E is now known as DrunkY === DrunkY is now known as DRNK-E === DRNK-E is now known as DrunkY [19:05] i just installed ubuntu 8.10 desktop using the all alt cd - it worked just fine [19:06] then i installed the edubuntu 8.10 add-on, rebooting and now x won't start [19:06] i'm seeing errors like, x server fails to start... no screens found [19:07] so i went thru both installs again - same problem [19:07] any suggestions? has anyone else experienced this? [19:08] Don't think so, but maybe you could tell us what kind of video hardware you have? [19:08] it may be a simple fix. [19:11] For 8.10, there shouldn't be anything in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Is yours empty? [19:11] it's an older pc so i don't know off-hand - let me try to take a peek at the card [19:14] it's an ATI card, but i'm not sure what model [19:14] and the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is not empty [19:14] it contains some basic stuff but not enough for X to boot [19:16] sbalneav: ^^^ [19:17] then what I'd try doing is moving it out of the way, and replacing it with an empty xorg.conf [19:17] see if that works. [19:17] ok, i'll give that a shot [19:19] nope, no dice [19:20] how are you restarting? With invoke-rc.d gdm restart? [19:24] I'm off to a meeting. However, failing that, you could always do an "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to reconfigure the X server. [19:24] I'll be back in a couple of hours if you still need me. [19:24] well that's what i've been doing, but it only walks me thru the keyboard setup [19:24] for some reason, it's not walkign me thru the video config at all [19:28] hrmm...ubuntu wiki format is so strange. When logged out of my acct, it doesn't show the horizontal lines under the == Title == headers, but when I *am* logged in, it shows them. I've cleared my cache and all, to. [19:28] too*
