[19:05] <bsnyder> i just installed ubuntu 8.10 desktop using the all alt cd - it worked just fine
[19:06] <bsnyder> then i installed the edubuntu 8.10 add-on, rebooting and now x won't start
[19:06] <bsnyder> i'm seeing errors like, x server fails to start... no screens found
[19:07] <bsnyder> so i went thru both installs again - same problem

[19:08] <sbalneav> Don't think so, but maybe you could tell us what kind of video hardware you have?
[19:08] <sbalneav> it may be a simple fix.
[19:11] <sbalneav> For 8.10, there shouldn't be anything in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file.  Is yours empty?
[19:11] <bsnyder> it's an older pc so i don't know off-hand - let me try to take a peek at the card
[19:14] <bsnyder> it's an ATI card, but i'm not sure what model
[19:14] <bsnyder> and the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is not empty
[19:14] <bsnyder> it contains some basic stuff but not enough for X to boot

[19:17] <sbalneav> then what I'd try doing is moving it out of the way, and replacing it with an empty xorg.conf

[19:24] <sbalneav> I'm off to a meeting.  However, failing that, you could always do an "sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg" to reconfigure the X server.

[19:24] <bsnyder> well that's what i've been doing, but it only walks me thru the keyboard setup

[19:28] <Lns> hrmm...ubuntu wiki format is so strange. When logged out of my acct, it doesn't show the horizontal lines under the == Title == headers, but when I *am* logged in, it shows them. I've cleared my cache and all, to.
