easwar\o PartyBoi211:09
PartyBoi2hey easwar11:09
easwarPartyBoi2, Ubuntu member?11:13
PartyBoi2easwar, I am not a ubuntu member why?11:17
easwarPartyBoi2, coz only Ubuntu members can take or give ops in this channel11:18
easwarand suppose I and forestpixie do something stupid and remove our ops,we will need a member to give it back to us11:18
PartyBoi2sorry, can't help you there :)11:19
forestpixieyou've got ops - just don't leave till we've done :)11:20
easwarforestpixie, I won't of my own volition11:21
easwarbut God forbid,if there's a power cut......11:21
jpdsIf you need someone, just ask us in #ubuntu-irc.11:25
easwarjpds, for Ubuntu members?11:26
jpdseaswar: Well, the op team is there and we're generally members.11:26
easwarjpds, thanks then11:26
easwarwill keep that in mind11:26

easwar:D11:26
jpdsAnytime.11:27
easwar:)11:28
easwarforestpixie, such accidents are why we need an Ubuntu member nearby ;)12:13
easwarnick timeouts etc12:13
forestpixiehi - how many people have turned up for the Partitioning - Part One session ?13:25
forestpixieI'll ask again - how many people have turned up for the Partitioning - Part One session ?13:34
forestpixiethe person running the session has some power cut issues and has just left the building13:35
PartyBoi2I have forestpixie13:35
forestpixielol13:35
PartyBoi2so when will we be starting?13:41
PartyBoi2what is happening forestpixie?13:42
forestpixieit seems that there's no-one here for it - if there are I'll try and run it on the fly13:42
forestpixiewe can postpone it if necessary13:43
PartyBoi2maybe that might be an option since easwar is not here13:44
forestpixieindeed13:44
forestpixieI'l' wait till 13:50 UTC and cancel then if he still cut off13:45
PartyBoi2ok, hopefully others will turn up in the meantime or raise their hand to let you know they are here for the Partitioning session13:46
forestpixie:)13:46
=== _Nicke_ is now known as Nicke
forestpixieok - assuming that no-one is here for it and as eawar is still missing I'll postpone the session13:51
PartyBoi2ok forestpixie, thanks for your time anyway and hopefully more will turn up next time as well as easwar13:53
forestpixie:)13:53
unutbuIs it true that IDE drives can have up to 63 partitions?13:59
forestpixieyea afaik  - but only 4 primaries - including a extended which can have numerous logicals13:59
unutbuI read recently that since IDE drives now use the same driver as SATA drives, they can now only support 1514:00
forestpixieI did see something similar myself, and tbh I've not tried14:00
forestpixieI've not looked into it in any depth since - not needing to do so14:01
easwarAre we started?14:01
unutbuOkay, thanks forestpixie14:01
forestpixieno we cancelled there was no-one here for it14:01
forestpixieother than unutbu asking a question just now :)14:02
easwarno one?14:02
forestpixienope14:02
* easwar is quite licky then14:02
easwar*lucky14:02
forestpixieglad you noticed that typo :)14:02
easwarforestpixie, hmm?14:03
easwarwhat would licky mean?14:03
forestpixiepuppies can be licky :)14:03
* easwar doesn't get it14:03
forestpixieeaswar: unutbu asked  I read recently that since IDE drives now use the same driver as SATA drives, they can now only support 1514:03
easwar15 partitions?14:04
forestpixieI read the same somewhere too14:04
easwarwell,that is news to me14:04
easwarBTW, what was the message you received when I quit?14:05
unutbutry it, we'll tell you14:06
easwarunutbu, I can't14:06
easwarunutbu, that was an unintentional quit because of power failure14:06
forestpixieeaswar has quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out))14:06
easwarhm14:06
easwarunutbu, well, where did you read this?14:07
easwarthat SATA drivers force IDE drives to have a max of 15 partitions?14:07
* easwar is kinda happy,as well as sad14:08
unutbuUm, it was on ubuntuforums a day or two ago14:08
* easwar hasn't seen it14:09
forestpixiethat's where I saw it too I think14:09
unutbuhttp://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6644988&postcount=814:09
easwarhmm,citations needed14:11
forestpixiehttp://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Partition/#logical14:11
forestpixieperhaps it's so - I'll play with an old hdd and let you know unutbu what I find out :)14:13
unutbuOh good. Thank you very much.14:13
easwarah,not that14:13
forestpixiewon't be 'very' soon but I'll pm you on the forum :)14:13
easwarI meant where is it that Linux uses IDE drives using SATA drivers?14:14
unutbuno problem; take your time :)14:14
forestpixieheh - it won't be till week or two - I got my session to think about for next saturday - but if no-one turns up I'll look then lol14:15
pleia2it's fine to postpone, but just be aware that some people join the channel knowing they can't be here, but intend to read the logs :)14:16
pleia2plus, logs are posted online after for folks who couldn't make it - so even a session that only has a couple attendees is still useful14:16
forestpixiemmm ok14:17
easwarpleia2, zilch attendees14:17
pleia2ah, I thought PartyBoi2 and unutbu were here for it :)14:17
forestpixiepartyboi2 was here keeping me company and I wasn't sure about unutbu14:18
easwarpleia2, nope, PartyBoi2 doesn't need to14:18
easwarand I'm also unsure about unutbu14:18
forestpixiebut I'll bear it in mind next week pleia214:18
easwarforestpixie, they don't attend sessions, and later create threads with Partitioning problem for dual boot14:19
easwarand crying faces14:19
easwarlol14:19
* easwar will have a field day increasing his post count at the next Ubuntu release(again)14:19
easwarforestpixie, you can deop yourself14:21
zpowersI'm sorry to intterupt, but I'd find it difficult to believe that IDE and SATA disk would use the same driver, due to the nature of the disk(one being parallel the other serial). What unutbu may be refering to is the consolidation of unix device names for IDE and SCSI devices in the linux kernel(ie IDE drives are no longer being named hd[a-z] but rather all drives are now using the name sd[a-z])14:22
* easwar too14:22
forestpixieyea I believe he is - but whether it makes a physical difference to howmany logicals can be created I've no idea as I've not attempted to do so ever14:23
=== apachelogger is now known as vacationlogger
* easwar too14:23
easwarany people here for the partitioning session?14:25
zpowersI'd think the number of paritions is limited much more by the capabilities what the MBR and BIOS than the Linux(or any other) kernel14:27
unutbuzpowers: See the link forestpixie referenced: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Partition/#logical14:28
easwarunutbu, that doesn't prove that IDE drives now onwards can only have 15 partitions as opposed to 63 earlier14:31
unutbuYes, I agree, with that easwar14:31
unutbuzpowers was saying the limitation was due to MBR or BIOS. The tldp link suggests that it is a limitation of linux14:32
easwarunutbu, plus the post that was referenced in the Ubuntu forums has a disclaimer that he may be wrog14:32
easwar*wrong14:32
unutbuYes, I know that the source was himself uncertain. I would like to check this, but I have no IDE drive14:33
zpowersIts also unlcear wether this limit is 15 per primary volume, or 15 in total14:33
zpowersI have an IDE drive in use at home14:34
easwarunutbu, I have a PATA drive14:34
easwarsimilar,IIRC,to an IDE14:34
