talsemgeest | Heya easwar | 09:28 |
easwar | so you are alive in #uf-beginners | 09:29 |
easwar | :) | 09:29 |
talsemgeest | I only just came online, and I have to leave soon too... | 09:30 |
easwar | talsemgeest, hmm | 09:34 |
talsemgeest | easwar, Hmm? | 09:34 |
talsemgeest | Yeah, I'm sorry, I'm going to have to miss your lesson. :( | 09:34 |
easwar | talsemgeest, no problem | 09:35 |
easwar | you probably know how to deal with Ubiquity's partitioner and GParted | 09:35 |
talsemgeest | Haha, yeah. I was hoping I could help you out a bit, but it is my first day back at school tomorrow, and it is 10:35PM now | 09:36 |
talsemgeest | So it is best for me not to stay up... | 09:36 |
easwar | talsemgeest, hmm | 09:41 |
easwar | cool | 09:41 |
easwar | no problem | 09:41 |
easwar | Who's a Ubuntu member? | 09:43 |
easwar | We need someone to be able to make this channel moderated for the Beginners Team-Education Focus Group session 4 hours from now | 09:45 |
ibuclaw | asd | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | :) | 10:05 |
easwar | cool | 10:05 |
forestpixie | all done then | 10:05 |
easwar | yeah | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | /voice name | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | to voice them when moderated | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | and /devoice name | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | I think | 10:05 |
ibuclaw | you'll figure it out soon enough. I'm just going off memory | 10:06 |
forestpixie | try again easwar and I'll voice ibuclaw | 10:06 |
easwar | forestpixie, go for it | 10:07 |
ibuclaw | :) | 10:07 |
easwar | ibuclaw, say something\ | 10:07 |
forestpixie | I did - see | 10:07 |
easwar | done | 10:07 |
easwar | cool | 10:07 |
easwar | ibuclaw, say something again | 10:08 |
ibuclaw | no | 10:08 |
ibuclaw | I don't want to | 10:08 |
ibuclaw | meanie :) | 10:08 |
easwar | ok | 10:08 |
ibuclaw | anyways, I'm off to work | 10:09 |
easwar | forestpixie, /mode +m to moderate,/mode -m to unmoderate | 10:09 |
easwar | bbye ibuclaw | 10:09 |
easwar | /voice nick to voice,/devoice nick for removing voice | 10:09 |
forestpixie | yep I got it | 10:09 |
easwar | forestpixie, gotta reboot for the kernel update,be back in a bit | 10:36 |
forestpixie | k | 10:36 |
easwar | give me ops before you go forestpixie | 10:56 |
easwar | or we will be stuck with no ops at all | 10:56 |
easwar | \o PartyBoi2 | 11:09 |
PartyBoi2 | hey easwar | 11:09 |
easwar | PartyBoi2, Ubuntu member? | 11:13 |
PartyBoi2 | easwar, I am not a ubuntu member why? | 11:17 |
easwar | PartyBoi2, coz only Ubuntu members can take or give ops in this channel | 11:18 |
easwar | and suppose I and forestpixie do something stupid and remove our ops,we will need a member to give it back to us | 11:18 |
PartyBoi2 | sorry, can't help you there :) | 11:19 |
forestpixie | you've got ops - just don't leave till we've done :) | 11:20 |
easwar | forestpixie, I won't of my own volition | 11:21 |
easwar | but God forbid,if there's a power cut...... | 11:21 |
jpds | If you need someone, just ask us in #ubuntu-irc. | 11:25 |
easwar | jpds, for Ubuntu members? | 11:26 |
jpds | easwar: Well, the op team is there and we're generally members. | 11:26 |
easwar | jpds, thanks then | 11:26 |
easwar | will keep that in mind | 11:26 |
easwar | :) | 11:26 |
easwar | :D | 11:26 |
jpds | Anytime. | 11:27 |
easwar | :) | 11:28 |
easwar | forestpixie, such accidents are why we need an Ubuntu member nearby ;) | 12:13 |
easwar | nick timeouts etc | 12:13 |
forestpixie | hi - how many people have turned up for the Partitioning - Part One session ? | 13:25 |
forestpixie | I'll ask again - how many people have turned up for the Partitioning - Part One session ? | 13:34 |
forestpixie | the person running the session has some power cut issues and has just left the building | 13:35 |
PartyBoi2 | I have forestpixie | 13:35 |
forestpixie | lol | 13:35 |
PartyBoi2 | so when will we be starting? | 13:41 |
PartyBoi2 | what is happening forestpixie? | 13:42 |
forestpixie | it seems that there's no-one here for it - if there are I'll try and run it on the fly | 13:42 |
forestpixie | we can postpone it if necessary | 13:43 |
PartyBoi2 | maybe that might be an option since easwar is not here | 13:44 |
forestpixie | indeed | 13:44 |
forestpixie | I'l' wait till 13:50 UTC and cancel then if he still cut off | 13:45 |
PartyBoi2 | ok, hopefully others will turn up in the meantime or raise their hand to let you know they are here for the Partitioning session | 13:46 |
forestpixie | :) | 13:46 |
=== _Nicke_ is now known as Nicke
forestpixie | ok - assuming that no-one is here for it and as eawar is still missing I'll postpone the session | 13:51 |
PartyBoi2 | ok forestpixie, thanks for your time anyway and hopefully more will turn up next time as well as easwar | 13:53 |
forestpixie | :) | 13:53 |
unutbu | Is it true that IDE drives can have up to 63 partitions? | 13:59 |
forestpixie | yea afaik - but only 4 primaries - including a extended which can have numerous logicals | 13:59 |
unutbu | I read recently that since IDE drives now use the same driver as SATA drives, they can now only support 15 | 14:00 |
forestpixie | I did see something similar myself, and tbh I've not tried | 14:00 |
forestpixie | I've not looked into it in any depth since - not needing to do so | 14:01 |
easwar | Are we started? | 14:01 |
unutbu | Okay, thanks forestpixie | 14:01 |
forestpixie | no we cancelled there was no-one here for it | 14:01 |
forestpixie | other than unutbu asking a question just now :) | 14:02 |
easwar | no one? | 14:02 |
forestpixie | nope | 14:02 |
* easwar is quite licky then | 14:02
easwar | *lucky | 14:02 |
forestpixie | glad you noticed that typo :) | 14:02 |
easwar | forestpixie, hmm? | 14:03 |
easwar | what would licky mean? | 14:03 |
forestpixie | puppies can be licky :) | 14:03 |
* easwar doesn't get it | 14:03
forestpixie | easwar: unutbu asked I read recently that since IDE drives now use the same driver as SATA drives, they can now only support 15 | 14:03 |
easwar | 15 partitions? | 14:04 |
forestpixie | I read the same somewhere too | 14:04 |
easwar | well,that is news to me | 14:04 |
easwar | BTW, what was the message you received when I quit? | 14:05 |
unutbu | try it, we'll tell you | 14:06 |
easwar | unutbu, I can't | 14:06 |
easwar | unutbu, that was an unintentional quit because of power failure | 14:06 |
forestpixie | easwar has quit (Read error: 60 (Operation timed out)) | 14:06 |
easwar | hm | 14:06 |
easwar | unutbu, well,where did you read this? | 14:07 |
easwar | that SATA drivers force IDE drives to have a max of 15 partitions? | 14:07 |
* easwar is kinda happy,as well as sad | 14:08
unutbu | Um, it was on ubuntuforums a day or two ago | 14:08 |
* easwar hasn't seen it | 14:09
forestpixie | that's where I saw it too I think | 14:09 |
unutbu | http://www.uluga.ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=6644988&postcount=8 | 14:09 |
easwar | hmm,citations needed | 14:11 |
forestpixie | http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Partition/#logical | 14:11 |
forestpixie | perhaps it's so - I'll play with an old hdd and let you know unutbu what I find out :) | 14:13 |
unutbu | Oh good. Thank you very much. | 14:13 |
easwar | ah,not that | 14:13 |
forestpixie | won't be 'very' soon but I'll pm you on the forum :) | 14:13 |
easwar | I meant where is it that Linux uses IDE drives using SATA drivers? | 14:14 |
unutbu | no problem; take your time :) | 14:14 |
forestpixie | heh - it won't be till week or two - I got my session to think about for next saturday - but if no-one turns up I'll look then lol | 14:15 |
pleia2 | it's fine to postpone, but just be aware that some people join the channel knowing they can't be here, but intend to read the logs :) | 14:16 |
pleia2 | plus, logs are posted online after for folks who couldn't make it - so even a session that only has a couple attendees is still useful | 14:16 |
forestpixie | mmm ok | 14:17 |
easwar | pleia2, zilch attendees | 14:17 |
pleia2 | ah, I thought PartyBoi2 and unutbu were here for it :) | 14:17 |
forestpixie | partyboi2 was here keeping me company and I wasn't sure about unutbu | 14:18 |
easwar | pleia2, nope, PartyBoi2 doesn't need to | 14:18 |
easwar | and I'm also unsure about unutbu | 14:18 |
forestpixie | but I'll bear it in mind next week pleia2 | 14:18 |
easwar | forestpixie, they don't attend sessions, and later create threads with Partitioning problem for dual boot | 14:19 |
easwar | and crying faces | 14:19 |
easwar | lol | 14:19 |
* easwar will have a field day increasing his post count at the next Ubuntu release(again) | 14:19
easwar | forestpixie, you can deop yourself | 14:21 |
zpowers | I'm sorry to intterupt, but I'd find it difficult to believe that IDE and SATA disk would use the same driver, due to the nature of the disk(one being parallel the other serial). What unutbu may be refering to is the consolidation of unix device names for IDE and SCSI devices in the linux kernel(ie IDE drives are no longer being named hd[a-z] but rather all drives are now using the name sd[a-z]) | 14:22 |
* easwar too | 14:22 | |
forestpixie | yea I believe he is - but whether it makes a physical difference to howmany logicals can be created I've no idea as I've not attempted to do so ever | 14:23 |
=== apachelogger is now known as vacationlogger
* easwar too | 14:23 | |
easwar | any people here for the partitioning session? | 14:25 |
zpowers | I'd think the number of paritions is limited much more by the capabilities what the MBR and BIOS than the Linux(or any other) kernel | 14:27 |
unutbu | zpowers: See the link forestpixie referenced: http://tldp.org/HOWTO/html_single/Partition/#logical | 14:28 |
easwar | unutbu, that doesn't prove that IDE drives now onwards can only have 15 partitions as opposed to 63 earlier | 14:31 |
unutbu | Yes, I agree, with that easwar | 14:31 |
unutbu | zpowers was saying the limitation was due to MBR or BIOS. The tldp link suggests that it is a limitation of linux | 14:32 |
easwar | unutbu, plus the post that was referenced in the Ubuntu forums has a disclaimer that he may be wrog | 14:32 |
easwar | *wrong | 14:32 |
unutbu | Yes, I know that the source was himself uncertain. I would like to check this, but I have no IDE drive | 14:33 |
zpowers | Its also unlcear wether this limit is 15 per primary volume, or 15 in total | 14:33 |
zpowers | I have an IDE drive in use at home | 14:34 |
easwar | unutbu, I have a PATA drive | 14:34 |
easwar | similar,IIRC,to an IDE | 14:34 |
