kb3uiuuname -A will tell you what version of the kernel I'm running, but nothing about Ubuntu.03:53
kb3uiWhat's the easiest way to tell what version of xubuntu I'm running, from the desktop?  How can I tell if I'm running 8.04 or 8.10?03:54
kb3uiI realize that people are "here", but not really "here".  That is, they are making transcripts but not actually monitoring real time.  No problem - will check back some other time.04:06

TiZHi. I'd like to install xubuntu into my current ubuntu installation, which has had the crap tweaked out of it. A quick "sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop" into tilda wants to remove Splashy and Wicd. Is there any way for me to avoid this?04:54
DionysuZsomeone around who can help me get my wlan functioning in xubuntu 8.10?07:27

LukaszJI've compiled myself an update version of the uvcvideo driver, which I tried to load in the kernel hoping to get my webcam to work with it. I've used svn to fetch & build from the scratch. The module won't load getting me with an error. I'm pasting for you the steps taken http://pastebin.com/m17fdada513:29
TheSheepLukaszJ: apparently it's compiled for a different kernel :/13:36
TheSheepLukaszJ: btw, v4l2 should support your webcam13:36
LukaszJTheSheep: Let me quote you, if don't mind :"apparently it's compiled for a different kernel :/" How is that possible? I downloaded the sources and just built them with "make". Well, what config file into the sources I should look for?14:31
TheSheepLukaszJ: from what little I know, compiling kernel modules on debian-based distros like ubuntu is a little more complicated14:32
TheSheep!kernel14:32
ubottuThe core of the Ubuntu Operating System is the Linux kernel: see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel - You shouldn't have to compile your own, but if you're convinced you do, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Kernel/Compile - See also: /msg ubottu stages14:32
LukaszJTheSheep: Ever done it yourself?14:32
TheSheepLukaszJ: I think you should use something called module assistant14:32
TheSheepLukaszJ: no, can't say I did -- I came from much simplier distros14:33
LukaszJTheSheep: I 've already considered using it. However, seeing that "uvcvideo" is supplied by the Ubuntu kernel, so isn't "3rd party", I built it myself.14:34
* LukaszJ is thinking how to fix it...14:35
TheSheepLukaszJ: there is an option saying whether to include version info with the symbols...14:35
TheSheepLukaszJ: maybe just disabling it would make it work....14:36
LukaszJTheSheep: I've already heard about that regarding depmod, do you mean the same?14:38
TheSheepI really don't remember where this option is, it's definitely in the kernel config (make menuconfig, etc.), but it may be also available when building particular modules14:39
TheSheepLukaszJ: whatever I did with kernel was in the times of 2.2.x ;)14:39
LukaszJTheSheep: Thanks anyway14:40
qkrhi all14:55
Myrttihi qkr14:56
qkrI installed xubuntu and it worked fine, but then I ran automatic updates, and then my network connection doesn't work anymore14:56
Myrttiwhich version of xubuntu?14:56
qkr8.10 i38614:56
qkrany tips?14:59
Myrttiwhich make is your NIC?15:00
qkrI have no idea, it's built-in, it's a laptop15:00
qkror a netbook actually15:00
LukaszJI've installed a svn version of the uvcvideo module, to get my webcam to work. It's already compiled but fail to load with http://pastebin.com/m17fdada5 . I didn't use "checkinstall" but "make install", I'd be happy to get a complete rid of it and get back to the previous module, or, at least remove it along with the stuff it has installed.15:01
Myrttiqkr: could you do a "lspci" and upload the output to a pastebin such as http://paste.ubuntu.com ?15:02
qkrthx15:02
qkrrealtek RTL8101E/RTL8102E pci express fast ethernet15:06
Myrttiok15:06
Myrttiqkr: are you by any chance using MSI Wind?15:07
qkrnope, Acer Aspire One15:08
Myrttiis it wireless that is broken, or the wired connection?15:09
qkrwired15:10
Myrttilooking at the bugreports and forums it seems that you've hit a bug15:11
LukaszJqkr: Can you check "sudo ifconfig" and tell us if the net devices are up?15:11
LukaszJHe quit, probably.15:12
qkrifconfig shows the ethernet device, it just doesn't have IP address, and it has lots of dropped RX packets15:13
LukaszJqkr: Are you using DHCP?15:14
qkryeah think so15:15
LukaszJqkr: How is your eth device labeled ? It should be "eth*" something, is it?15:17
TheSheepor wlan015:17
qkreth015:18
TheSheepah, wired15:18
TheSheepsorry15:18
LukaszJTheSheep: :)15:19
LukaszJqkr: Then, try "sudo dhclient eth0", after it's done send a ping to a host.15:20
qkrit's not working15:24
LukaszJhmm15:26
Myrttilooks to me like https://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/31386615:26
LukaszJType "lshw -C network|grep eth" and look at the driver section and tell us its name, ok?15:27
LukaszJMyrtti: Just had a look, it might be related.15:29
LukaszJqkr: What kernel do you  use?15:29
qkrdriver=r8169 driverversion=2.3LK-NAPI15:32
qkrat product and vendor it says: Illegal Vendor ID15:32
qkrI don't know what kernel I got, whatever is current probably15:33
LukaszJqkr: It's easy to find out, just type "uname -r"15:34
qkr2.6.27-1115:34
LukaszJWell, it seems to be just the bug Myrth passed you the link to. Have a look there, it's been confirmed by the Ubuntu team, means the fix will be released rather soon. To be sure you can try "dmesg" and compare it with the other users logs in the bug report. Am I clear? :)15:37
qkryeah that was the problem, I am using now 2.6.27-7 and it works15:39
LukaszJqkr: Useful to conserve the old kernels after the ugrade, isn't ? ;)15:41
qkryeah seems to be, luckily it conserved it by default15:41
LukaszJqkr: Hmm, it might be that the most previous version gets saved automatically, but, I'm not sure.15:42
LukaszJqkr: You'd rather subscribe to the bug site on Launchpad, so you get notified when the fix is ready15:43
qkrthanks15:45
qkrmaybe it will be fixed on the next kernel15:47
LukaszJqkr: Probably15:57
mchelenhow do i use my bluetooth headset in xubuntu?16:26
TheSheep!bluetooth16:29
ubottuFor instructions on how to set up bluetooth, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BluetoothSetup16:29
mchelencan i install the gnome system tray utility, or is that a bad idea?16:31
TheSheepI think there is no alternative16:31
mchelenthere are instructions for using cli16:31
wolfjbhow do you add an application from the applications menu to the panel? I've tried various dragging techniques none of which work16:33
mchelenyou have to add the launcher manually, right click the panel and pick add item16:34
wolfjbwell, for example, I'd like to add emacs to the panel, emacs however doesn't show up in the list of items. So I'm forced to find the icons and the launch commands manually. is there not a better way?16:41
TheSheepyou can drag-and-drop the launcher from /usr/share/applications  to the list in launcher settings16:42
wolfjbTheSheep: sweet! that is exactly what I needed to know, thanks!16:44
lulemurfancan i get to my shared documents on my windows machine iva my network? it's the first time using this version of ubuntu18:24

lc2i've not used any other flavour of ubuntu, so i don't know what the others have up there18:38
fortunevthe poket guid says there are three buttons (xubunut) applications|places|system. Is that what you have?18:38
fortunevI only have two Applications|Places18:38
lc2hmmm18:40
lc2you should get the guide corrected18:40
fortunevso you have two then?18:40
lc2plain old ubuntu might have a system button, but xubuntu certainly does not18:40
lc2yes, i have two18:40
fortunevOk.. Thanks!18:40
lc2fortunev: where did you get the pocket guide?18:41
lc2i'm thinking it's worth reporting a documentation bug18:41
fortunevxubuntu site link led to it. Can not remember exactly where, but is mentions 8.10, so it is not very old18:42
fortunevI will see If I can track it down. hold on a sec18:42
fortunevok al stop... the guide is for straight ubuntu and not explicitly xubuntu18:43

Guest87467Cool, just wondering if anyone knows the best  way to solve sound problems in Xubuntu for the Yamaha  OPL SA3 chipset? I am pretty much  of  a newbie when it comes  to Linux. I have considerable Windows experience but this is my first  Linux  install.18:54
lc2lulemurfan: yessir18:55
lc2Guest87467: it depends what your problem is18:55
Guest87467Well it don't werk... ;) At all... the sound that is.18:56
lc2Guest87467: i'm not being condescending, but ensure that it's not muted18:57
Guest87467I understand that ALSA is installed with the Xubuntu distribution by default  unless I am mistakeen.18:57
lc2the xfce mixer does not have a mute button, so it's impossible to tell when it is muted18:57
lc2try a different mixer, like kmix18:57
Guest87467Oh no offense taken  I am so new  with Linux at this point that  I don't even know how  to do that at this  point.18:58
lc2Guest87467: i'm not new to linux, and i spent hours debugging a "sound problem" which turned out to be the sound being muted18:58
Guest87467I do  know that when I open a mixer, it shows nothing.18:58
lc2it shows nothing?18:59
Guest87467It is quite like the sound chipset is  not even detected.18:59
Guest87467Nope, nothing.18:59
lc2hm18:59
lc2go to a terminal for me18:59
lc2lsmod | grep snd18:59
lc2then go to paste.ubuntu.com and paste the results19:00
Guest87467I  have read  that there   has  been some    problems getting this chipset working...19:00
lc2ah19:00
Guest87467But   it show  up as supported in the  current version of ALSA, however I am not to familiar with Linux instalations through a terminal just yet.19:01
Guest87467I   am running 8.10 though.19:01
lc2Guest87467: just go to a terminal and paste what i told you to, it'll tell us whether it was detected or not19:02

MaxHavocIs there a lock workstation function in Xubuntu?19:26
StroganoffMaxHavoc: yes, it's somewhere in the screensaver settings19:27
lc2Guest87467: okay i have a suspicion here19:27
lc2Guest87467: before we go on, you are absolutely certain that you actually have a soundcard, right? ;)19:28
MaxHavocStroganoff, I see an option to lock screen when the screensaver is active, but how can I do it at will?19:28
Guest87467Yeah me too... it ain't werkin' ;)19:28
StroganoffMaxHavoc: Press System ? Quit... ? Lock Screen.19:28
Stroganoff? = ->19:28
lc2Stroganoff: there is no such thing19:28
lc2MaxHavoc: you can make your own19:28
lc2add a launcher with the command:19:29
lc2xscreensaver-command -lock19:29
lc2iirc19:29
Guest87467Well it is a lap-top I bought it used a few days ago but the chip set   is on the main board.19:29
MaxHavoclc2, Thanks19:29
lc2MaxHavoc: np19:29
StroganoffMaxHavoc: another one: Control+Alt+L19:29
Guest87467At least it should be.19:29
lc2Guest87467: okay, well, i think there's one possible solution, which is that you need to go into your BIOS setup and find an option called something like "PnP OS"19:30
MaxHavocStroganoff, Hmm...doesn't work form e19:30
lc2Stroganoff: doesn't work on xubuntu19:30
Stroganoffoh i thought i was in the ubuntu channel :D19:30
MaxHavocStroganoff, lol19:30
lc2o ;D19:30
Guest87467Hmm yeah, been in the bios but didn't think about that.19:30
lc2Guest87467: anyway, look for that option, and turn it off19:30
lc2then come back, and if you still have a problem we'll work through that19:31
Guest87467Ok will do that. See ya in a bit if not resolved. Thanx for your time. So far this is better than Windows tech support. :)19:32
lc2Guest87467: haha i know windows tech support19:32
MaxHavoclc2, Is Xscreensaver not installed by default?19:32
lc2"uh you should probably just reinstall"19:32
lc2fuck those guys19:32
lc2MaxHavoc: it's the default screensaver daemon on xubuntu19:32
MaxHavocIt's telling me I need to install it via apt19:32
lc2wait what19:33
Guest87467Yeah, I became my own Windows Tech Support... decided it was time to get experienced with Linux now. :)19:33
Guest87467Anyway see ya... going  to   poke around in  my bios. :)19:33
MaxHavocben@Xubuntu:/usr/local/bin$ xscreensaver -command -lock19:33
MaxHavocThe program 'xscreensaver' is currently not installed.  You can install it by typing:19:33
MaxHavocsudo apt-get install xscreensaver19:33
MaxHavocbash: xscreensaver: command not found19:33
lc2MaxHavoc: you wrote it wrong on several counts19:33
lc2xscreensaver-command -lock19:34
rockohelllo lc219:34
rockohow are you?19:34
MaxHavocAh! I thought there was a space between xscreensaver and command19:34
lc2MaxHavoc: :)19:34
lc2rocko: i've been better19:34
rockowhat happened ?19:34
lc2http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3461/3250375289_c3abe669d5.jpg19:35
lc2i'm getting old. :/19:35
lc2but that's okay, i'm taking my frustrations out on random newbies and making them self-pwn their systems by typing the commands i tell them! ;)19:35
lc2j/k19:35
rockoI see19:37
rockohahahaha19:38
MaxHavocHey lc2, sorry to keep bugging you when you're upset but...xscreensaver-command doesn't exist for me either, when I search for commands like that this is all I can find:19:38
MaxHavoc./usr/bin/xscreensaver-getimage-video19:38
MaxHavoc./usr/bin/xscreensaver-getimage-file19:38
MaxHavoc./usr/bin/xscreensaver-gl-helper19:38
MaxHavoc./usr/bin/xscreensaver-getimage19:38
MaxHavoc./usr/bin/xscreensaver-text19:38
lc2wow, that's odd19:39
lc2well, you might find it a good idea to install xscreensaver then19:39
MaxHavocOk :)19:39
lc2wait19:40
lc2does gnome-screensaver-command --lock do anything?19:40
lc2i don't know what xubuntu's default screensaver daemon is19:40
jano_opps19:40
MaxHavocYes, yes it did19:40
lc2hi jano_19:40

lc2sudo /usr/sbin/sshd19:47
rockolc2 I reformatted my swap can that lead to bad problems ?19:48
knomerocko, doubt so.19:48
lc2if you want sshd working after your next reboot, go to applications -> system -> services19:48
knomerocko, though i don't see why you'd want to do that.19:48
rockobecause ubuntu made it extended and I did not want it extended19:48
lc2hit "unlock" then check "remote shell server"19:48
rockowell it seems that it as knome19:48
lc2rocko: wtf?19:48

lc2haha how come it was formatted as ext3?19:49
lc2how did that happen?19:49
rockomy boot up messages are all messed up now19:49
lc2yeah i can imagine19:49
jano_sudo: /usr/sbin/sshd: command not found19:49
lc2jano_: !19:49
knomejano_, install openssh-server19:49
rockono it was extended with swap lc219:49
knomejano_, it should be started automatically (by default)19:50
lc2knome: no it's not19:50
rockoI did not want it to be extended because I have no purpose in making room for another partition19:50
lc2xubuntu, at least, starts no network services by default, which is the right thing to do19:50
knomelc2, yes. but openssh-server is not installed by default.19:50
rockowell it seems to for me19:50
lc2knome: oh, okay19:51
jano_"destination missing behind command openssh-server"19:52
lc2rocko: sudo apt-get install openssh-server19:52
MaxHavocIs there anything akin to the device manager from XP in Xubuntu?19:52
knomejano_, ^19:52
rockowhy would I want to install that lc219:52
lc2MaxHavoc: nope19:52
lc2sorry, not rocko19:52
lc2jano_: sudo apt-get install openssh-server19:53
MaxHavocSeriously? Is there anyway to view my installed devices?19:53
lc2sorry, i'm all messed up right now19:53
lc2MaxHavoc: go to a command line and type lspci19:53
rockohow do I fix my swap problem lc2 ? because my boot up messages are all messed up now ?19:53
knomeMaxHavoc, lshw :P19:53
lc2rocko: i have no idea19:53
jano_installing 8-)19:53

jano_=notepad?19:55

Guest86200lc220:08
lc2Guest86200: hi!!20:08
Guest86200Heya, me... Charles again...20:08
lc2i don't know who charles is, but that's okay20:08
Guest86200Still no sound... didn't see an option for pnp os20:09
lc2Guest86200: hmmm :(20:09
Guest86200Well I was the guy with the soound problem20:09
lc2oh it's you20:09
lc2see, if linux is not seeing the card *at all*, it has to be something messed up in the bios20:09
Guest86200I set a different nickname but it keeps changing   it.20:09
lc2even if it's not loading a driver for it, lspci should show it20:10
Guest86200Well I am thinking that I may need to get the new version of ALSA installed...20:10
lc2Guest86200: no, i don't think that's your problem20:10
Guest86200because I had read somewhere that something  was broken in  the kernal   in regards to this  particular chip set.20:10
knomeGuest86200, then the nickname is registered. you can try to take something near the nick you want. eg. charles -> churles :)20:11
lc2Guest86200: if the kernel can see it, even if it can't use it, lspci should show it20:11
Guest86200Hmmm20:11
lc2like if the driver is totally broken, lspci doesn't even look at that, it'll just show all the pci devices you have installed20:11
Guest86200Id did change  one setting but so far I have seen  no difference.20:12
Guest86200Device Config20:12
rockolc2 is it possible to install the wrong bios and still have your machine working ?20:12
lc2rocko: the BIOS is not something you typically "instalL"20:12
lc2install*20:12
Guest86200I dunno but I bet there is a bios update for this baby.20:12
jano_reboot20:12
rockowell I meant flash lc220:13
rockoyou kno20:13
rockosame shit20:13
Guest86200This is like a P II system20:13
lc2rocko: if you flash your bios with the wrong bios image, you will hose your system20:13
rockoI see well I guess I did not then because it works lc220:13
Guest86200Anyway Device Config was set to <All Devices> I changed it to <Setup By OS>20:14
rockowell what if it is for the right motherboard but not right southbridge lc220:14
lc2Guest86200: were there any other options?20:14
Guest86200But no difference thus far.20:14
lc2rocko: you're asking for trouble20:14
rockowhat do you mean by that lc2 ?20:15
Guest86200There were a lot of options for the soound chipset.20:15
lc2rocko: meaning that if shit goes all fucked up, we're not gonna help you ;)20:15
lc2pardon my language20:15
Guest86200IRQ DMA Channels... different memory locations to set and stuff.20:15
lc2Guest86200: try all of them20:15
lc2Guest86200: oh, then never mind, don't try those things20:15
rockoI see lc220:15
Guest86200Um that coould be a bunch:)20:15
rockowell I already flashed it years ago20:15
lc2now, brb, i haven't played my strat mongrel in a while so i'm gonna go do that :)20:16
Guest86200Especially when yer talkin'  memory locations20:16
knome!ohmy | lc220:16
ubottulc2: Please watch your language, attitude, and topic to help keep this channel friendly and helpful. Remember, there are kids here!20:16
rockobut lspci tells of a different southbride then what the bios upgrade has when extracted the  exe bios upgrade20:16
Guest86200Hmm  you have given me an idea... I coould try flashing  the Bios20:18
lc2oh nm20:18
fortunevcan I print to a shared xp printer?20:19
rockoGuest86200 yes you can extracted exe files if they are extractable20:19
Guest86200That might fix it... however if I did that  woould I have to reinstall Xubuntu to get it to recognize the chip set?20:19
rockoif they are some more meant be20:20
lc2Guest86200: no20:20
Guest86200Kewel...20:20
rockoif it does not extract then it is the end of the line for extraction20:20
Guest86200One more question... can you flash a bios on an    older computer without a floppy drive?20:21
Guest86200I can boot from  a CD...20:21
rockoI am not sure20:21
Guest86200And  only    has a CD ROM Drive.20:21
rockoGuest86200 you could try using qemu  to see if coreboot works on your machine if it does you could try flashing it will coreboot20:22
rocko*with20:22
rockobut if you want to keep your old pc20:22
Guest86200Any bios flashing I ever did before was with a floppy.20:22
rockoI would recommend you to not flash the bios20:22
rockoonly if you know exactly what you are doing20:23
rockoI did not use a floppy on this machine20:23
Guest86200Why? As long as you get the right bios file it is relatively safe.20:23
rockoto flash bios20:23
Guest86200What did you use roco?20:23
Guest86200Just HD?20:23
rockoan exe file from my manuafactures site20:24
rockoyes did it from hard drive20:24
rockoif you do not have linux install you can download from piratebay an bartpe that has already been made20:24
rockoand you could install it from that windows  livecd20:25
Guest86200Hmm that is  cool most that I have done made a setup    like  disk and saved it to a floppy   then you rebooted with the floppy and  it  flashed  the bios.20:25
rockoI see20:25
fortunevcan i print from xubuntu to a shared xp printer?20:26
Guest86200Hmmm well Windows Live isn't an option  on this puter... running Xubuntu and not dual booting.20:26
rockoyes fortunev you should be able to20:26
fortunevroko: what connection type should I use?20:27
R2D2lol Hd0 smart status BAD   :-(20:27
Guest86200Hmmm  ok well I'm  off   to do  more troubleshooting... I may even  install Win 98  or 2000 and see if there is sound  in that  OS but only as a last resort.20:28
jarnosIs there any working cd burner. Even K3b has remarkable fault: It can't verify its burning result.20:58
charlie-tcaI burn 4 cd-r's a day with Brassero. They all pass integrity checks.20:59
jarnoscharlie-tca: But I need a burner capable to burn CD-RWs.21:01
jarnoscharlie-tca: I mean software.21:01
rockonevermind lc2 I was wrong it was rs480 which  I do have so it was the right bios upgrade :D21:01
rockoI thought it was the south bridge21:02
boernijarnos, k3b and brasero are frontends to cdrtools. if u want to have something new, buy nerolinux21:02
charlie-tcaAh, I see. I can burn them once, then if I try to erase and burn again, it's dead. Thus I use cd-r now21:02
rockowhich was 40021:02
jarnoscharlie-tca: By K3b you can burn them, but verification is broken; a bug report done: Bug 20726521:05
jarnosBug #20726521:05
charlie-tcabug 20726521:06
charlie-tcabroken bot :(21:07
jarnoscharlie-tca: Won't tell about KDE bugs maybe.21:08
* jarnos hates bugs that break working feature.21:09
knomeo'rly?21:12

TheSheepbugs that break non-workingfeatures are much more tolerable21:14
jarnosTheSheep: Bugs that are in new features are more tolerable and understandable.21:35
jarnosTheSheep: but once you have something that works, it is annoying to break it by an update.21:37
jarnosTheSheep, knome: They are like steps backwards.21:37
knomeyou are corret.21:38

lulemurfanHow can I see other shared folders on my network?21:51
SiDiyou should use "nautilus --no-desktop" for this ;)21:51
SiDiit understands "smb:///" to navigate into windows shared networks21:52
SiDiand also sftp:// for remote access to linux pcs21:52
lulemurfani should download nautilus?21:52
SiDihm if you don't already have it, i suppose there are easier ways21:53
SiDii just always had gnome on another hand so i always had nautilus21:54
lulemurfanI used to use edubuntu!21:54
SiDiin the network menu of your apps menu, don't you have "Server Client Terminal" ?21:54
SiDiyou could try this and Samba for windows pcs, Ssh/Sftp for linux pcs21:54
SiDibut nautilus is really cool for browsing other pcs, though21:55
lulemurfani don't have any of that, shall i just download that other program?21:55
SiDiI guess so then21:55
SiDiif you have disk space21:55
SiDibut don't forget to launch it with "--no-desktop"21:55
lulemurfani should have that space21:56
SiDiand then when you run it, go to preferences and remove the "Let nautilus manage desktop" thing21:56
SiDiit's for gnome and it'll screw your desktop ;)21:56
lulemurfanok will do21:56
Odd-rationalethere are other samba browser around if you don't want to install nautilus...21:56
lulemurfaninstalling now anyway!!!21:57
Odd-rationale(might as wel use gnome, imo... lol)21:57
lulemurfani think nautilus i used on edubuntu21:57
SiDiOdd-rationale: do you mind giving me the name ?21:57
lulemurfanthanks for your help bye21:58
SiDiinterests me :)21:58
SiDibye bye lulemurfan21:58
Odd-rationalewell, you can use smbclient from the command line.21:58
Odd-rationalei also think there is one called pyneighborhood... or soemthing21:58
Odd-rationale!info pyneighborhood21:58
ubottupyneighborhood (source: pyneighborhood): A GTK+ application that allows you to browse network shares. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.4-0ubuntu5 (intrepid), package size 80 kB, installed size 380 kB21:58
SiDicommand line isnt always practical :)21:58
Odd-rationalethere are a couple others, if you search synaptics, iirc...21:59
SiDiwell thanks, i'll give this one a try21:59
SiDii need to leave in a few secs actually :x21:59
SiDisee you another time ;)21:59
Odd-rationalesee ya21:59
wormsxulla_hello!22:25
wormsxulla_i have installed a 8Gb sdhc card in my eee pc, and created a partition of 3,6 gb on it. when i do "system monitor", it reports that 134 Mb are used on this partition. when i do disk / properties, it says there is 21,3 Mo on it. i wonder what the difference is22:27
wormsxulla_second question: even though the sdhc card is in its slot at boot, it doesn't mount automatically, is it normal?22:28
knomewormsxulla_, what does 'df' say?22:40
knomewormsxulla_, sdhc cards should mount autmatically.22:40
knomewormsxulla_, do you use the default xubuntu kernel?22:40
knomewormsxulla_, 'df -h' maybe :P22:41
wormsxulla_knome: df in a terminal?22:42
knomewormsxulla_, yes.22:42
wormsxulla_just a second, please22:42
knomewormsxulla_, i'd trust on that output.22:42
wormsxulla_/dev/sdb1             3,7G   94M  3,4G   3% /media/disk22:43
knomewormsxulla_, 94M used, that is.22:44
wormsxulla_so it seems that is what is reported in the system monitor, but there is a 70Mb difference with the files found in right-click/disk properties?22:44
knomemm-h. in thunar?22:44
wormsxulla_yes22:45
wormsxulla_also, that 94Mb was 134Mb yesterday, and i certainly deleted nothing :)22:46
knomeyeah, well.. suppose you are running intrepid22:46
wormsxulla_knome: what could be the reason why this card does not mount?22:46
wormsxulla_i run 7.10 gutsy22:47
knomewormsxulla_, a-ha.22:47
knomewormsxulla_, don't really know. are you using the default intrepid kernel?22:47
knomei mean, default xubuntu kernel :)22:47
wormsxulla_2.6.22-14-generic22:48
wormsxulla_if that helps :)22:48
knomeeh i mean...22:48
knomedo you use the normal repository for xubuntu in your eepc?22:49
knome+e22:49
knomewormsxulla_, there is a custom kernel repository for hardy-> at http://array.org/ubuntu/22:51
knomewormsxulla_, i use that and i have had absolutely *no* problems with anything.22:51
knomewormsxulla_, of course, it's not for gutsy..22:51
knomewormsxulla_, i also heard that there is coming some better native support for eeepc in jaunty.22:52
wormsxulla_knome: it's not really a "problem", i'm curious :)22:52
wormsxulla_oh really? great then22:52
knomewormsxulla_, but i think that was limited models.22:53
wormsxulla_knome: no problem with the wifi (or network manager) at all?22:53
knomewormsxulla_, no problems.22:53
knomewormsxulla_, all function keys work properly.22:53
knomewormsxulla_, i get osd windows when i press them.22:53
knomewormsxulla_, camera works.22:53
knomewormsxulla_, hibernating works.22:54
wormsxulla_cool. i had a lot of problems with err..ppp22:54
knomewormsxulla_, powersaving works.22:54
knomewormsxulla_, so maybe you should try it :)22:54
wormsxulla_i use my eee pc as a laptop, i never shut it off (unless it freezes)22:54
wormsxulla_so powersaving is not a problem for me :)22:55
knomeheh.22:55
wormsxulla_i partitioned the card with fdisk instead of cfdisk, which wasn't working for some reason. could it be the reason of the not-mounting?22:58
knomei doubt that.22:58
* wormsxulla_ scratches head :)22:59
knomei'll have some sleep. see you later.23:01
wormsxulla_thank you! goodnight23:02
