Nwallins1Hi, my top and bottom panels seem a bit messed up.  I am on 8.10/ppc.  When I try to add to top panel, it doesn't show up until I log in again.  my clock gets stuck, and my workspaces on the bottom panel don't always show up01:05
Nwallins1also, running apps don't always show up on the bottom panel01:05
Nwallins1 i checked panel settings, they seem fine.  I was running for a while with Gnome services off, to try to save memory.  I noticed the panel issues, turned Gnome svcs back on.  no dice.  I have rebooted, etc. several times01:05
Nwallins1what's the next thing to try, for troubleshooting or a workaround?01:06
Nwallins1ah, I just killed compiz, and panel behavior is back, with xfwm401:10

xubuntuhi all02:52
xubuntuI have a question about the updates on xubuntu live USB02:52
charlie-tcago ahead, xubuntu02:52
xubuntuwhen I want to update it will download the packages and after there is a space disk issue02:53
DeeDotDeeWould it be possible to take the CD image and burn it to a DVD correctly? Or should I just bunker up and download a huge DVD ISO ?02:53
xubuntuso I think it's just a problem of configuration and xubuntu is using a temp space (RAM fs or else) ?02:54
xubuntuif you have an idea ?02:55
charlie-tcaxubuntu: What system are you using (hardware)02:55
charlie-tcaIt sounds like the hard drive is small02:55
xubuntuI have a 8GB usb key and after the hardware is my laptop02:55
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: are you talking just to burn the iso to a DVD instead of a CD?02:56
DeeDotDeecharlie-tca: That's correct.  But making it able to boot, etc02:56
charlie-tcaxubuntu: did you partition the disk?02:56
xubuntuno there is only one FAT32 partition of about 7.6 7.8GB02:57
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: sur it's possible. If it is the desktop cd iso, it should work the same if you burn it to dvd or cd02:57
DeeDotDeecharlie-tca: I tried in Nero, and it told me to give it a CD-R02:57
xubuntubut it's a live USB system so I think it creates a RAM fs and use it for download and install02:57
charlie-tcaNero is not that smart. It saw a cd iso image and intends to burn it to a cd-r only. Do you have an installation of ubuntu or xubuntu?02:58
DeeDotDeecharlie-tca: X02:58
charlie-tcaxubuntu: you seem to be running out of space. Perhaps clearing the tmp files or using apt-get --clean to remove installed files will help.02:59
DeeDotDeeWell actually I do not have anything installed02:59
DeeDotDee(linux wise)02:59
charlie-tcaNo guarantees, I am not that familiar with it.02:59
DeeDotDeeAs I am obviously downloading an install CD02:59
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: Windows, right?03:00
DeeDotDeeYes03:00
xubuntuyou know there is the little icon which says update manager... when I click on it I have 240MB to download but it seems that it stops after a moment because of space03:01
xubuntuso I think the best way should be to tell it where it should download the files (My USB key)03:01
charlie-tcaYou are running out of disk space.03:02
xubuntuyes I know but I have my USB key which can have 7GB so I think it's a lot just for updates03:02
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: Is there anything here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto03:02
charlie-tcathat might let you burn that to the dvd?03:03
charlie-tcaxubuntu: why not just install them one or two at a time then?03:03
charlie-tcaYou can uncheck them in update manager and just check a few at a time.03:04
xubuntuyes I was thinking about it but I was looking for a better solution like modifying a config file or something like this03:04
DeeDotDeeI'll try installing "Infra Recorder"03:04
DeeDotDeeand using it03:04
charlie-tcaGood luck with it.03:05
xubuntubecause if have well understood the system is loading like a live and install a copy of the running system at the end of my session in order to save the configuration03:05
xubuntuso I think the one update by one update should work03:06
xubuntubut it would be more powerful to apply all the update at a time03:06
charlie-tcaNot neccessarily. It just makes it easier to apply them all at once.03:07
charlie-tcaEnd result is a fully up to date installation.03:07
xubuntuyes ;-)03:07
xubuntuok so I will go that way :-)03:08
pkodonHello everyone. Is there a way to get the panel at the bottom of the screen in XFCE to actually auto-hide? I've tried setting it to auto-hide several times, and it never seems to consistantly want to hide. If I run some things in Wine, the bottom of the window is then covered by the panel, and the mouse goes behind the panel in the Wine "screen"; so I can't see what's at the bottom of the Wine window, and I can't click on anything in the bar.03:08
xubuntuthank you for your conversation bye03:09
xubuntusee you03:09
charlie-tcanp, see you later03:09
charlie-tcapkodon: mine auto-hides, but certain applications will get down to the bottom of the screen, and it can not pop up in front of them.03:10
charlie-tcaThen I have to switch desktops to see it.03:11
pkodonNo, that's not the problem here. I turn on auto-hide, and can even go to a different desktop and click on the desktop and it's still open.03:11
charlie-tcaare you running compiz?03:12
pkodonI don't think so, I don't think Compiz likes my hardware.03:13
charlie-tcaMight be a bug, then. I haven't heard of it before, but haven't tried hiding the panels except in Jaunty03:14
pkodonOh, well, this is PC/OS, which is based off of Xubuntu Hardy.03:14
charlie-tcaMaybe they changed something. It might be worth checking with them on it.03:15
pkodonI seem to remember having the same problem with straight Xubuntu 8.0, though. The only time I didn't have some problems with panels was in KDE.03:16
pkodonAnd I tried Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu.03:16
pkodonI settled on PC/OS because I didn't have to go hunting for software to install so I could watch the movies I already had on my hard drive (and play music and other stuff I have).03:18
charlie-tcaI see. I'll try to check out hardy when I get time, then.03:18
pkodonOkay, I'll keep looking for answers. I'm kind of new to Linux. I don't want to use Windows for more than playing games, and if I can get the games to work in Linux I'll use that.03:21
charlie-tcaGood luck :-)03:21
pkodoncharlie-tca: Thanks, it's a bit of a learning curve, but I'm getting there. Not ready to install anything that has to be compiled, yet, but I'm sure that will come with time.03:22
pkodonI do like the idea of being able to fix stuff that doesn't work right, or at least find someone else who can and has an interest in doing so. Microsoft seems to only fix stuff if millions of people complain.03:23
pkodonAnd I've seen them steal from their users too many times.03:24
charlie-tcaI don't compile myself. I had to a couple of years ago, but I am a user, not a programmer.03:24
charlie-tcaTo me it was difficult03:24
pkodonYeah, I waited this long because in the past it seemed everyone I met who had Linux was talking about how they had just compiled the latest version of their OS.03:25
charlie-tcaI enjoy using xubuntu. It is a fine product that fills my needs nicely03:25
pkodonI couldn't see recompiling everything every couple weeks/months.03:25
charlie-tcaI stumbled across Ubuntu 5.04, and have not looked back.03:26
charlie-tcaWhen it got to hard to load on my old system, I moved to Xubuntu.03:27
pkodonI like the reduced memory requirements of Xubuntu, but I like the KDE interface and tools better.03:27
charlie-tcaNever used KDE03:27
DeeDotDeecharlie-tca: do you think xubuntu 8.10 would work better than XP on my old P2 450 MHz, 320 MBs of PC100 SDRAM, 10 GB HD?03:28
DeeDotDeeVooDoo3 3DFX03:28
DeeDotDee8MB03:28
pkodonI tried to combine a bunch of different distros based off of Ubuntu/Kubuntu/Xubuntu, and ended up with a FrankenLinux that wouldn't update or even uninstall 300+ packages.03:29
pkodonI had wanted to switch between interfaces and see which one I liked best, but I decided that was a bad move.03:29
pkodonAs for your machine, I would say XP won't leave you much room for programs, and the P2 is probably a little dated for XP. I wouldn't even try Vista.03:30
DeeDotDeeI'm not paying to upgrade to Vista even on this computer03:31
pkodonBut then, if you want to do a recommended install for Xubuntu, you're probably going to want to at least upgrade your HD to a 20G. I have three partitions set up as such:03:31
DeeDotDeeI told dell to give me XP or I will find another company.03:32
DeeDotDeeWhich I should have done anyway03:32
pkodon10GB for /root , 2GB for a SWAP partition, and 26GB for /home03:34
MaxHavocSo, I just upgraded my kernel from 2.6.27-7 to 2.6.27-11 and I'm wondering, is there a way to automatically remove the previous kernel and get it out of the grub boot menu?03:34
pkodonI think Ubuntu recommends at least 8GB for /root.03:34
pkodonMaxHavoc: Hmm. I'm new to Linux, but, seems to me there was something in the Settings Manager about startup management.03:36
pkodonMaxHavoc: Otherwise, you may have to look through files in /etc to find the one that is used to configure grub.03:37
MaxHavocpkodon, There is, but it doesn't change the grub boot menu. In any event I know how to do it by hand, I was wondering if there was an automated way to remove previous kernels and any references to them03:37
MaxHavocpkodon, The grub file is /boot/grub/menu.1st, just FYI03:38
MaxHavocmenu.lst rather03:38
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: I think I would call it a toss up. It's hard to say if xubuntu or XP would be better03:39
DeeDotDeeyeah, it's all gonna go slow as crap03:39
DeeDotDeeI can't stand to use the machine anymore03:40
charlie-tcaWell, mine does.03:40
DeeDotDeeyet.. It works03:40
DeeDotDeeso why should I abandon it just cause it's slow?03:40
charlie-tcaLeave out openoffice, and change to epiphany seems to help in xubuntu03:40
pkodonMaxHavoc: Okay, thanks for that bit of info. As for some other location to auto-manage it, I don't know of any. There may also be something in the command-line commands in a root shell or using sudo in a shell that will allow you to remove stuff you're not using any more and clean up references.03:40
MaxHavocDeeDotDee, Not sure what issue you're having, but XP can run fast as hell if you tweak it right03:40
charlie-tcaMaxHavoc: no automatic programs that I know of.03:41
MaxHavoccharlie-tca, So how do you delete old kernels?03:41
pkodonMaxHavoc: He's got an older computer, really older, with a 10GB HD and a P2/450.03:41
DeeDotDeeMaxHavoc: even on this computer it takes XP about 1m and 30 seconds to start up03:41
DeeDotDeeafter 3 months of being installed03:42
charlie-tcaI don't. They don't take enough disk space to worry about. I change menu.lst to only show a couple, though.03:42
MaxHavocpkodon, I've run XP on systems like that before, use msconfig to control what happens on startup, disable unnecessary services, turn off all graphics options, use classic theme and start menu, it will run pretty quick03:42
DeeDotDeeMaxHavoc: what was that dude? Blackviper?03:43
charlie-tcaDeeDotDee: It might be better with jaunty. It starts much faster than intrepid, even. Of course, it is in alpha now.03:43
pkodonMaxHavoc: But, is 10GB enough space to install it on and have something left to install apps?03:43
MaxHavocXP is 2 gigs installed03:43
MaxHavocSo yeah03:43
DeeDotDeepkodon: It has about 5 GBs left03:43
MaxHavocI might suggest running it with no service packs even though it's a security nightmare that way, the service packs add size and reduce speed03:44
pkodonOkay, I guess that's promising. You can also get smaller Linux distros with even faster/leaner UI's than Xubuntu (I'd have to look up the one I installed for a while).03:44
MaxHavocOr you know...spend like $300 on Craigslist for a new PC :)03:44
DeeDotDeeI just bought this one03:45
DeeDotDeeWhy would I want to upgrade my old one?03:45
DeeDotDeelol03:45

pkodonMaxHavoc: Is Craigslist one of the cheaper places to get new hardware?03:45
DeeDotDeeLOL03:45

MaxHavocpkodon, New? Like brand new? No, Newegg is the best, but you can get used PCs for cheap03:45
MaxHavocHell if you're in the washington DC area I'll sell you mine :)03:46
DeeDotDeeP4 Dual Core 1.8GHz, 500 GB internal (462 really)03:46
pkodonMaxHavoc: Ahh. Well, I've seen ads for both.03:46
DeeDotDeeis what I just bought03:46
MaxHavocOk, so what's with the PII-450?03:46
DeeDotDeeMaxHavoc: Why should I obandon it just cause it's slow?03:47
DeeDotDeeIt still works03:47
pkodonIf you ask me, the PII-450 would make a great Win98SE machine for playing older games.03:47
DeeDotDeeBeen working 10 yeras03:47
MaxHavocHow much RAM on it?03:48
DeeDotDee32003:48
pkodonI've got a PIII-500 I use for Win98SE and play old Windows and DOS games on (using DosBox so I don't have to boot into 98's broken DOS).03:48
MaxHavocI was just playing arkanoid 2 using dosbox03:49
DeeDotDeeIt came with 98SE, but isn't support for it screwed03:49
MaxHavocOn my quad core ;p03:49
charlie-tcaSupport for 98 ended before XP, didn't it?03:49
DeeDotDeeXP is still supported till April03:49
MaxHavocMS mainstream support is 5 years, extended is 1003:50
pkodonDeeDotDee: Yeah, but I've never found Microsoft support to be very good, even when it was being supported.03:50
MaxHavocXP keeps getting extra support because Vista sucks03:50
MaxHavocSupport also means patches and other updates03:50
pkodonI figgure, if I'm not using it on the internet (I'm using Linux for that), and I'm just using it to run games, I shouldn't need updates beyond what I've already got (a CD-full).03:51
MaxHavocYeah03:51
MaxHavocI'm just saying though that you can use a modern PC and still play old games on it03:51
DeeDotDeeWhen is XP's security updates going to die ?03:52
DeeDotDeenot just the mainstream support03:52
MaxHavoc201103:52
MaxHavoc10 years from release03:52
DeeDotDeeHopefully x/Ubuntu will be good enough for stupid mothers and kids to use by then03:52
MaxHavocAye03:52
DeeDotDeeSo I can conver their computers too03:52
DeeDotDeeconvert03:52
pkodonMaxHavoc: Well, I will say this, XP with DosBox seems to run any DOS/Windows game I've tried (on a friend's laptop). I don't have XP myself.03:52
DeeDotDeeAint no way in hell I'm paying for Windows03:53
MaxHavocI get legal copies of Windows from my works' MSDN subscription03:53
pkodonAs I understand it, the support for "legacy" software in Vista is not so good.03:53
MaxHavocpkodon, Yeah, that's true03:53
MaxHavocBetter than it should be, Vista was supposed to totally off backwards compatability03:54
MaxHavocIt could have been a great OS if it had done that03:54
pkodonWhat I don't like about XP is the fact that, after a while, if you've got problems that mean reinstalling XP (like you keep tweaking it till you break it), eventually you come to the point where you have to reinstall every month (or it will quit working), or call Microsoft for a new key.03:54
MaxHavocCreate an unattended install and use a reg file to do all your tweaks03:55
MaxHavocThat's what I do03:55
MaxHavocI can install a fully tweaked XP in less than 30 minutes all without pressing a button03:55
pkodonWell, I don't usually do many tweaks, just get rid of all the junk I don't want installed that it insists on installing anyway.03:56
MaxHavocYou can preemptively remove all that with an unattended install03:56
MaxHavocWell, most of it anyway03:56
MaxHavocWindows will never be as customizable as Linux obviously03:56
pkodonBut my buddy Joe, on the other hand, was always getting tweak managers and playing with settings and breaking it.03:56
MaxHavocYeah, well now you can break XP in a VM until you know what you're doing :)03:57
MaxHavocBut yeah, back in the day when I was learning XP I reformatted like every week03:57
MaxHavocAnyway, I'm off, good night everyone03:59
pkodonWhat I don't understand with Linux is Wine. I download a few "portable" aps/games massaged to install on USB sticks, and run on any computer, and they will run fine. Anything with an installer, though, won't install. If I try to read C:\ from Wine's menu, I'm told C:\ isn't valid, and this even after doing an auto-detect in the Configure Wine utility.04:00
pkodonDeeDotDee: Heh, I sympathize entirely, I won't buy Vista, at any rate, even if they offer it for $1.00. XP? Well, I might consider buying a copy of that in the bargain bin at the local dollar store.04:02
pkodonDeeDotDee: But, I really don't like Microsoft's "need" to be in control of it's users, it's habit of stealing from it's users, and it's habit of modifying standards with unsafe "extras" so people can build websites and aps that won't work on anything but an IE-equipped OS.04:04
pkodonAnyway, I guess I'm going to head off and see what other trouble I can get into.04:05
DeeDotDeeI think I'm already there on linux  pkodon, just not quite.  I run Pidgin, FireFox, crontabs on cygwin, wget on cygwin, Google Earth04:07

Tabb-eei got one hopeflea final q... and its an odd one. If i partition C: aka sdc, with win98 in one section and xubuntu in t' other, will win's gradual corrcuption of c: affect the linux partition as well?19:17
charlie-tcanot if you partition the linux side with ext319:17
charlie-tcapartition = format19:17
Tabb-eek cool19:17
Tabb-eeyes19:18
charlie-tcaWin98 should not even see the ext3 partition19:18
Tabb-eeyep19:18
Tabb-eei take it win will never corrupt the MBR then?19:19
charlie-tcaNo, I don't know about that. The MBR is separate19:19
Tabb-eewell, its gotta be beter than running 98 all the time19:20
Tabb-eewould be great if there were a xubuntu dvd packed full of apps...19:21
Tabb-eesince im a newb at this19:21
Tabb-eegonna google for one19:21
Tabb-eei assume xubuntu runs all ubuntu apps19:24
charlie-tcaIt should. Depending on your hardware, it can have problems, though19:25
Tabb-eeP4, 1G ram, so hopelfea no trouble there19:25
Tabb-eeooh, dos emu :)19:27
charlie-tcaShould work19:28
Tabb-eeyea19:29
Tabb-eewell, i like this... getting the newer pc to run under 98 has been a hedache19:29
Tabb-eedamn this mean finding a whole new load of apps to run tho :/19:31
charlie-tcaOf course. Some will be the same, but I think most will change going to gnome19:32
Tabb-eeyeah :( :)19:32
Tabb-eeIOW yes i gotta find a load, but the result will be mreo stable19:32
Tabb-eethe idea of no hard crash in several days is alien!19:33
charlie-tcaJust gotta get out of windows! ;)19:33
jackfeckmakes for an interesting idea of having a recreate file that could be saved, so under a new image all the apps that you loaded before could auto load to recreate the entire app build19:33
Tabb-eelol19:33
Tabb-eethat went a bit over my head :/19:34
jackfecksaves having to reinstall them by hand, maybe this exists already19:34
Tabb-eeoh... i like no-install portable apps19:35
Tabb-eedunno how that works wi linux19:35
David-Ajackfeck; there is "sudo dpkg --get-selections >file" and "sudo dpkg --set-selections <file"19:35
jackfecksorry idea hamster at work here.  basically a file that you could copy to cd or usb so that in the event that you do a complete re install of the of the OS you could just load this file and it would get all the apps that you had19:36
David-Ajackfeck: but not perfect if you upgrade as some packages changes19:36
jackfeckDavid-A: ok will check that out, does it work for junk obtained through package manger?19:36
David-Ajackfeck: it does not differentiate packages explicitly selected or installed thru dependency19:37
jackfeckDavid-A: sounds exactly like the right thing !  thx  i'm often having to rebuild boxes from scratch19:38
jackfeckTabb-ee :  sorry to highjack the thread, did you get everything from your end ?19:39

knomei'm not sure if you can search it by keywords, but the site stores contents of urls19:45
