mefisto__alarm: /etc/fstab  ?00:04
alarmmefisto__,  when plugin in the hdd kde handles the mounting, not fstab00:05
mefisto__alarm: wouldn't fstab override that?00:05

ubottuHi! Welcome to #kubuntu!00:13
v3traeadben: hiya00:13
adbenone question friends, kdm theme setup how it' s possible with kde 4.2?00:15
v3traeadben: can you use a 4.1 theme on 4.2?00:15

jalsi'm having k3b issues: when i attempt to rip to mp3 i get a not that helpful error00:19
v3traebrb guys00:19
jalsi have all the codecs installed i think00:23
v3traethere we go00:23
mefisto__jals: what is the error?00:23
jalsjust says "error encoding track 1"00:24
mefisto__jals: installed lame ?00:25
jalsthe lame package in synaptic? yeah00:25
jalsanything else i might need?00:25
jalsthis is my lame command: lame -V1 --vbr-new --tt %t --ta %a --tl %m --ty %y --tc %c - %f00:25
cbwcjwI just got here, and thought you were saying that a certian package was lame. ahaha.00:25
cuznti have a few lame commands alright00:26
cbwcjwhaha00:26
ActionParsnip1hey guys00:26
ActionParsnip1im playing with kwin for a chuckle00:27
ActionParsnip1with widgets, what are the shortcut keys for?00:27

ActionParsnip1v3trae: i'm having a play since i got kde4.200:28
ActionParsnip1just bored00:28
ActionParsnip1still gonna use fluxbox after this00:28
mefisto__jals: do you get the error without the  -V1 --vbr-new  options?00:28
v3traeActionParsnip1: i hated widgets when they came out for OSX, so i don't bother =D00:28
v3traeActionParsnip1: i dunno i like kde 4.2 quite a bit00:28
mike-solidusalso, do you know if the qt guys fixed the bug wth thier aiglx implimentation and the nvidia drivers?00:28

HeliodorHello00:30
cbwcjw!hi | Heliodor00:30
ubottuHeliodor: Hi! Welcome to #kubuntu!00:30
Heliodorhow do i unbind the "ALT" function that moves windows?00:30
Heliodorevery time i hold ALT and drags something, it moves the window. And i cant find where to unbind this.00:31
v3traemike-solidus: i'm having no problems with the expiramental v 180.22 drivers.00:31
mike-solidusv3trae: did you have problems with the old drivers where the de would freeze on startup 80% of the time?00:31
v3traemike-solidus: i'd get random lock ups pretty much constantly00:32
mike-solidusv3trae: and with old fbo showing up on the first draw of a window?00:32
ActionParsnip1Heliodor: i know the thing you mean, I'm not sure how to unbind it but its dead useful00:32
mike-solidusv3trae: SWEET, really good news, updating today00:32
v3traemike-solidus: you have to get it from their site, there isn't a package for it00:32
v3traemike-solidus: but its a simple install, just make sure the old drivers are gone first.00:32
HeliodorActionParsnip1: Cant use photoshop without unbinding it00:33
ActionParsnip1Heliodor: i see00:33
mike-solidusv3trae: hmm, im not gonna mess with that then, I've done manual installs of drivers before a couple of times, and for some reason with ubuntu based installs it tends to completly fsk over apt.00:33
v3traemike-solidus: its literally you unload the driver, run the script, it asks you questions, all of which i answered yes to (as a guide told me to) and restart kdm00:34
cbwcjw!botsnack00:34
ubottuYum! Err, I mean, APT!00:34
v3traemike-solidus: give me a second i'll find you a link to the forum guide i used.00:34
jalsthis is nuts, i shouldn't have this much issue ripping a cd00:34
mike-solidusbig down side to apt i think, its great at handling apt based installs, but if you want to install something yourself, it tends to mess EVERYTHING up. I'd like to see some sort of implementation like gentoo's portage but with binary packages00:34
mike-solidusjals: what type of problems are you having?00:34
ActionParsnip1jals: konqueror has a good cd ripping feature00:34
jalsmike-solidus, Grip won't display the track list of the audio cd, k3b gives errors when attempting to rip00:35
v3traemike-solidus: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=993788 follow it to the letter and you shouldn't have any problems, only thing is when it's talking about turning off gdm, swap that for kdm and you shouldn't have any issues.00:35
jalsActionParsnip1, how do i set it up to rip mp3s?00:35
mike-solidusjals: for some stupid reason with kde 4.x it will not see cd drives so you have to use an external program that assumes the cd in the drive is an audio cd. i think i ended up using acidrip00:35
jalsi'll give that one a go00:35
mike-solidusjals: its really stupid, i'm guessing they just didn't wanna impliment it yet and thier base system doesnt cover it because technically you cant mount an audio cd00:36
jalswhat's weird with Grip is that if i insert a cd with Grip open, it briefly displays the tracks then they vanish00:36
mike-solidusv3trae: thanks, i'll go check it out00:36
ActionParsnip1jals: http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/locutus/easy-cd-ripping-with-konqueror-1754400:36
v3traemike-solidus: righto, install irssi and come back if you have any problems =) I might not be able to help but someone should =D00:37
jalsmy old drive was IDE, this one is SATA, i wonder if that's the root of the issues00:37
ActionParsnip1try: apt-cache search cd | grep -i rip00:37
ActionParsnip1jals: all new drives had IDE00:37
ActionParsnip1you mean PATA00:37
jalsyeah maybe i do00:38
ActionParsnip1;)00:38
cbwcjwIm pretty sure he means sata http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_ATA00:38
mike-solidusjals: could be, but if its happening since an upgrade to kde4 its prolly kde 4's fault, freaked me out the first time i ran into it because i was working on someone elses computer.00:38
cbwcjwPATA was obsoleted by SATA except in industrial00:39
ActionParsnip1cbwcjw: it has an IDE though (Integrated drive electronic). Old drive were spindles of platters which relied purely on the controller on the motherboard / daughterboard to control it. New drives had IDEs to make controlling them easier and also allows a buffer for data#00:40
ActionParsnip1cbwcjw: so ALL new drives have an IDE, its a common mistake but seems accepted00:40
cbwcjwOh well. It doesnt exactly matter :)00:40
jalsActionParsnip1, that link doesn't explain how to enable mp3 ripping00:41
jalsjust says it'll already be there; it's not00:41
jalsok now it is00:41
jalsguess it is since i installed lame00:41
ActionParsnip1jals: In that sidebar you should see a services tab. If not then shoot your distribution and get Kubuntu (shamless plug here). After clicking on the services tab you should see an entry titled "Audio CD Browser". When that is selected you will see several choices like cda, wav, ogg and mp3. These are the formats you can rip off of the CD. It is just a simple matter to select the format you would like (ogg is best and open 00:41
jalsright but last time i checked i didn't see mp3 under those choices00:42
ActionParsnip1cbwcjw: just a lil fyi for you :D00:42

jalsamarok is great00:50
ActionParsnip1jals: try gnome00:50
jalsi could try gnome00:50
ActionParsnip1or fluxbox00:51
jalsany ideas though why i'm having this issue, is it really this impossible for kde to rip a cd?00:51
jalsi figure it must be something specific to my setup00:51
ActionParsnip1jals: run the app from a konsole, you will get intelligent outputs00:51
jalsActionParsnip1, yeah i tried that with Grip, googled some of the results, not so helpful00:52

Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Thats ok, mature meaning?02:49
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: :-D02:49
EagleScreentranslate it in the internet02:49
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Ok02:49
EagleScreenthere are more applications for 32 than for 6402:50
EagleScreenand there are many applications for 32 that work better than for 6402:50
EagleScreenmany 64 bit applications needs to use wrappers and run 32 bit libraries02:51
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: That means it's not recommended?02:52
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Or it's up to what the single user use the pc for02:53
Sp0tKubuntuI guess02:53
EagleScreenthe only advantage of a 64 bit distribution is that your processor will can work around 30% faster02:53
EagleScreenI use 64 bit, but there are some programs that i cannot run by this02:54
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Ok, i dont run so much on my laptop, but i run some02:54
EagleScreenfor instance a video game created by Argentina which is only for 32 bits02:55
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Mail, web, torrent, burning, ripping, notes, music, stuff like that actually02:55
EagleScreenI'd wait one year to use 64 bits distributions02:56
Zorixtoo much misinformation about 64 bit02:56
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Then i wait :-) Im not so into linux yet, so i learn a little meanwhile, i hope, lol02:56
Zorixthere is no issue with running 32 bit apps in linux02:57
Zorix64 bit02:57
Sp0tKubuntuAnother thing, where on the ubuntu / kubuntu sites can i see when the next stable release will come? :-)02:57
Zorixapril02:57
Zorixcheck the wiki02:58
EagleScreenUbuntu is always released at the same dates02:58
Sp0tKubuntuZorix: Dont confuse me now :-D No problems i apps for linux in 64bit?02:58
Zorixapril and october02:58
Sp0tKubuntu2 times a year i see02:58
Zorix32 bit apps will work in 64 bit installations02:58
EagleScreenone in October and one in April02:58
Sp0tKubuntuAhh, that way around02:59
Zorixthis is 2009, not 1999.. no reason to run a 32 bit os on a 64 bit box02:59
=== david is now known as Guest28464
Sp0tKubuntuAll in all, i can install 64 bit system, and run 64 bit apps, AND 32 bit without problems?03:00
Sp0tKubuntuI got the point in using the system power there is, no need to waste good performance :-)03:01
EagleScreenin theory, you can run 32 bits applications in 64 bit systems, but not without problems03:01
Sp0tKubuntuMaybe in a year or so you say?03:02
Sp0tKubuntuWhen its made more stable03:02
Sp0tKubuntuThink i will try, just for fun03:02
EagleScreenI hope for in one year some things as plugins to be more mature for 64 bits03:03
Sp0tKubuntuI made a / and a /home and a swap when making the partition on my system, can i then reinstall / without messing /home up? It's 2 partitions03:03
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Now i think i know what mature is03:03
EagleScreenyes you can03:03
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: Nice, and home stores all my settings and installed apps and cfg for them?03:04
Sp0tKubuntuWhen i use show hidden files, theres alot of things in there i did'nt put there myself03:04
EagleScreen#/home stores all your settings (settings which not require root privileges)03:06
Sp0tKubuntuHmm, when the things i have installed now is from a 32 bit system, can it work together when i reinstall /, will home be lost?03:06
Sp0tKubuntuOk03:06
Zorixthere is no problems with 32 bit apps03:06
Zorixon 64 bit03:06
Zorixi have zero issues03:06
Sp0tKubuntuBut i can set root previleges if i want right?03:07
Zorixits linux you can do whatever you want03:07
Sp0tKubuntu:-D03:07
Sp0tKubuntuIm used to windows03:07
EagleScreenall configurations for your user are saved in /home03:07
Sp0tKubuntuOnly reason to run windows now, is for gaming! Or is linux game-compatible?03:08
EagleScreenbut system configurations that require root password or sudo are saved in /etc03:08
Sp0tKubuntuEagleScreen: And etc is a part of root i my case?03:08
EagleScreenthere are many game which only run well in Windows, i also have it for games03:08
EagleScreenetc is inside / (root)03:09
Sp0tKubuntuMe 2, playing L4D :-) NICE game! .-)03:09
Sp0tKubuntuYeah, actually //root?03:09
EagleScreenyou will have to install all your packages again, but thair configuration will be keept03:09
Sp0tKubuntubecause thers a "root" folder in /03:09
Sp0tKubuntuNice! :-)03:10
EagleScreenthere are three roots lol03:10
Sp0tKubuntuWhat is the name of the developer of linux? Some finnish guy right?03:10
Sp0tKubuntu3??03:10
EagleScreenthe partiion where the system is installed is one, the root partition, represented as /03:10
Sp0tKubuntuHmm, not sure i understand comepletely03:11
EagleScreenthe root user is the second, a user with permisions to do everything03:11
Sp0tKubuntucompletely*03:11
Sp0tKubuntuAhh, its a user, simply?03:12
EagleScreenand the /root folder is the third, the personal folder for thr root user, is equivalento to your /home/your_name03:12
Sp0tKubuntuThats the one i have for my stuff?03:13
Sp0tKubuntuThird one03:13
Sp0tKubuntuIs it not good to be on root user all time?03:14
Sp0tKubuntuMaybe make 2 users default03:14
Sp0tKubuntuSorry for asking so many questions, are just curious03:15

corigo3In 4.2 is there a standard hot key, or way to set a hot key to reduce all open windows and show the desktop? The 4.1 widget I used to use doesn't work in 4.203:27
JontheEchidnacorigo3: Add a "show desktop" widget to your panel or desktop, then right click on the widget and select "configure"03:31
JontheEchidnayou should be able to set a shortcut from there03:31
JontheEchidnaoh, what do you mean by the old one "not working"?03:32
JontheEchidnawhen you add it does it complain that the widget can't be created?03:32
corigo3When I add the Showdesktop Widget it displays as a big red X and says it is an Unknown widget03:34
corigo3That's what I mean by not working03:34
JontheEchidnathat's what I thought03:34
JontheEchidnamost likely kdeplasma-addons didn't get upgraded03:34
JontheEchidnado a sudo apt-get install kdeplasma-addons03:35
corigo3JontheEchidna: that worked. Thanks03:41
JontheEchidnayup, no problem03:41
JontheEchidnait didn't get upgraded because upgrading would remove a library package and replace it with a newer version03:41
corigo3What about resizing a Desktop folder widget?03:50
corigo3What about resizing a Desktop folder widget?03:52
corigo3sorry03:52

nikoJhey hey.. After install, I get a blank screen on boot with a periodic beep from the pc-speaker.. how does one fix that?03:58
nikoJit beeps roughly every 30 seconds03:58
dewmanmaybe x didnt start correctly nikoj?03:59
nikoJhonestly, I don't know.. the screen was completly blank..03:59
nikoJwhen i ctrl-alt-delete it did reboot03:59
nikoJbut there was 0 text on the screen until the mahcine rebooted04:00
nikoJnothing at all04:00
dewmanI think there is a key combo that you can do like alt f1 or altf2 or something that will bring up a terminal during boot04:00
nikoJyep i tried that04:00
nikoJnothing04:00
dewmanhmm.04:00
nikoJi'm using a very common video card04:01

dewmando you even get the ubunutu spash screen?04:01
nikoJI don't recall seeing one, but I can't say I was paying that close attention04:01
nikoJif you wish i can retry and come back04:01

dewmancant04:02
nikoJnod.04:02
nikoJright now i'm in the failsafe mode from the grub menu.. so that worked fine04:02
dewmanmy ati card did something like that but only after i installed the restricted drivers. I had to modify a few lines in order to get it to work04:03
nikoJ*shrug* I'm using a 8800 .. it should work with default vesa drivers04:04
dewmanit was trying to force a larger display to my monitor..04:04
nikoJI *am* using a dual monitor display.. but at worst it should just garble the 2nd screen04:04
nikoJor display notihng on it04:04
nikoJbut this.. is pretty strange04:05
dewmanwhat does your xorg.conf file show?04:05
nikoJhrm I can't get a 2nd terminal.. I'm in the debug mode atm.. I'll check it and come back04:06

ActionParsnip2zgmf-x20a: to go back a folder use: cd ..09:52

kkrohnthat takes you to your home-folder.09:52
kkrohnAnd from there go to the sub-folder you want, but without the first "/".09:52

Tm_Tfor starters, I guess15:56

jamfx? anyone here?18:19

jamfxthe mbr is on the raid0 will this go there automagically?18:20
blahjakejamfx: i believe so but you may want to have someone else confirm there's nothing funny with a RAID setup18:21

ScytheBlade1It's kind of hard for a computer to boot when your MBR is split across two disks18:21

ScytheBlade1So details of your setup would be needed18:22
jamfx@blahjake: nope; fakeraid ;-)18:22
jamfxI am using the alternate installcd which has SATA-Fake-Raid drivers enabled18:22
ScytheBlade1jamfx: define two raid setups. Use raid1 for /boot, and keep it as the first partition on all of the disks. Then make a secondary raid0, for your actual OS/data18:22
ScytheBlade1s/setups/arrays/18:22
jamfx@scytheblade1: I don't want to have a raid for my kubuntu, this is not neccessary. I just want the GRUB to be on the fakeraid, so I can choose between Win and Kubuntu on startup18:24
