rockomy first deb package it is a terminal emulator called sakura http://ifile.it/ft0qkog01:05
Stroganoffask in #debian whether it's good or not01:14
rockook01:18
NwallinsHi, I added a new user after customizing my setup a little bit.  when logged in as the new user, newly opened windows start at the topmost pixel, annoyingly hiding the title bar behind the top panel01:24
Nwallinsany idea what is causing this, how to troubleshoot, fix, workaround?01:24
Nwallinsthis does not happen for two other users01:24
Nwallinsrunning 8.10 on ibook, powerpc01:25
NwallinsI have compiz-core installed, emerald01:25
NwallinsHere are the main customizations I have done: http://ppclinux.info/wiki/maclin/Xubuntu_ibook_g401:27
Nwallinsdoobie doobie doo...01:37
NwallinsHello, Hello, Hellooooo    (Is there anybody out there?)01:47
NwallinsJust nod if you can hear me ;)01:48
charlie-tcaThere people here, but apparently nobody that knows an answer for you01:48
Nwallinsan answer would be great.  i'd be happy for a point in the right direction01:49
charlie-tcaThe only one I know is turn off compiz, reboot, turn it back on. Sometimes that works01:50
Nwallinsi have found ~/.cache to be a source issues, as well01:51
Nwallinsi rm -rf ~/.cache/ when troubleshooting01:51
Nwallinsi am curious about the 'save session' on logout, and 'last session' on login01:52
charlie-tcaWhat about them?01:52
charlie-tcaI never found they had an effect on the hidden top issue01:52
Nwallinswhat exactly is saved?  is this hampering troubleshooting efforts?01:52
charlie-tcaSaved is the windows as opened. Last session is to open the desktop using the settings you had last time you opened the desktop, I think.01:53
=== Flare183_ is now known as Flare183
Nwallinsi am curiuos which settings disappear, if i choose xfce4 desktop01:53
Nwallinsmost of my Settings Manager settings seem to hold01:53
Nwallinsif not all01:53
charlie-tcaIf you are running Xubuntu, you are using xfce4desktop is the session.01:54
Nwallinsit's not clear to me which settings are 'permanent', vs session-based01:54
Nwallinsoh01:54
Nwallinslike, which DE to load?01:54
Nwallinsso, 'last session' in GDM just chooses xfce vs. gnome, or whatever?01:55
Nwallinsi thought it was connected to 'save session' on logout01:55
Nwallinsas in, load the DE, plus the last known state01:55
charlie-tcaIt should be connected to it, to give your last session settings.01:56
Nwallinsok, stuff beyond just the DE choice?01:56
charlie-tcaBut I do not know all of it.01:56
Nwallinsdesktop environment01:56
charlie-tcaYes, beyond the DE01:56
Nwallinswhereas if you choose xfcedesktop, then you get a "fresh" load?01:57
Nwallinsjust talking about GDM login01:57
charlie-tcaThings like when I say single-click in thunar, it is in that last session01:57
Nwallinsok01:57
Nwallinssome things go into ~/.config right?01:58
Nwallinsi imagine these to be the 'permanent' settings01:58
charlie-tcayes01:58
charlie-tcathey are permanent01:58
Nwallinsit has been a challenge, customizing this ibook, learning xfce01:59
Nwallinsmainly i have wanted to change the system defaults02:00
Nwallinsfinding them in /etc...   whew!02:00
Nwallinsthis way new users, etc. get good defaults02:00
Nwallinsfor an ibook02:00
Nwallinswithout additional per-user config headache02:01
charlie-tcaYou might want to take a look at the xfce specific docs at /usr/share/xfce4/ on your computer02:01
rockowhy is it that the ubuntu-restricted extras use multiuniverse for bad and ugly ?02:01
rockoit seems to not work as well02:01
Nwallinscharlie-tca: ok, thanks02:01
charlie-tcarocko:  You could ask that on #ubuntu02:01
charlie-tcabut I suspect it has to do with licenses02:02
Nwallinscharlie-tca: can you tell me anything about the 'disable gnome services' option on login?02:02
Nwallinswhat is impacted?  i have 256MB ram, want to conserve02:02
charlie-tcaI never noticed it.02:03
Nwallinsyou disable?02:03
charlie-tcaNo, I did not even see it. I don't look at options most of the time, I just login02:03
Nwallinson 8.10 it is enabled by default02:03
Nwallinsok02:03
Nwallinsi am putting a hard squeeze on this install, trying to get the most out of the ibook :D02:04
Nwallinsthinking about a custom kernel, not sure if its worth the headache02:04
charlie-tcarocko: I assume you are talking about gstreamer0.10-plugins-bad and -good?02:05
rockobad and ugly02:06
rockonot good02:06
charlie-tcaThey have restricted licenses, But I do not the differences / specifics.02:07
rockook02:07
rockomaking backups of all the codecs02:07
rockojust in case they become illegal every where02:07
rockobetter to be safe than sorry02:08
Nwallinsrocko: they will always be mirrored somewhere.  you an archivist by nature?02:10
rockois there decryption for games on cd/dvd for linux02:10
rockoyou mean an Anarchist Nwallins ?02:11
rockoo02:11
rockoarchivist02:11
Nwallinsheh, no02:11
rockowell sort of02:11
Nwallinsbut makes sense, too02:11
rockoyeah well who knows02:12
rockoyeah I am an archivist02:12
Nwallinsfor many codecs, their implementations improve02:12
rockoI make archives of websites02:12
Nwallinssome are pretty fixed02:12
rockothat I want to keep02:12
rockoyeah I know I can always check02:12
Nwallinswebsites disappear..02:13
Nwallinsbut there is always wayback machine02:13
Nwallinsor internet archive or whatever02:13
rockoyes they certainly do02:13
rockoyeah I have used it Nwallins02:13
rockoand it does not always work02:13
rockoit does not always archive it on the days you wanted it02:13
rockoalso since it obeys robots02:14
rockothey sites do not function properly02:14
rockoand do not have all files02:14
* charlie-tca locks the robots out of my websites02:14
Nwallinsanyway, i think you can count on nearly every codec available today, will be available 20 years from now, on some semi-official server in a small country02:15
rockoyes I know how to charlie-tca02:15
rockoin wget's wgetrc file02:15
rockoyou can set no robot02:15
charlie-tcablame it on microsoft; it is their robot I needed to block02:16
rockoso that it does not follow the robots rulez02:16
rockoif you are going to disobey the robots file02:16
rockoat least do it so that it does not take to much brandwith02:16
rockoso that it causes a dos like attack02:17
rockoso set time limit for waits with wget02:17
charlie-tcaThat's different. MS search robots used to hit every page about every 10 minutes or so. It made it hard to keep the site available02:17
rockoI see02:17
rockoI am talking about the robots file02:18
rockoon websites02:18
rockorobots.txt02:18
charlie-tcaThey send out hundreds of bots at a time, and when they tie the site up, it gets frustrating as the webmaster.02:18

rockohello02:28
linux_guyHello #xubuntu02:59
charlie-tcahello linux_guy03:00
linux_guyi got a computer for free today.  its an old pentium 3 / 199 Ram / 40 gig box with no ethernet03:00
forceswireless?03:01
charlie-tca:-)03:01
linux_guyafter installing ubuntu 8.10, it uses 75% cpu and 75% memory at idle..... can i install xfce from a usb drive?  a complete new install will take all day as the cd rom is very slow03:01
linux_guyforces, this has no networking PERIOD03:02
charlie-tcayes, it can be done from usb. No, I have not tried it.03:02
charlie-tcaMost of the old systems won't boot to usb03:03
forcesyou can buy ethernet card03:03
forcesthey're cheap03:03
charlie-tcaAlso, even my old 4x cdrom installs in 2-3 hours03:03
linux_guyi'm used to using synaptic and apt-get to download new things, but i need to download it on another machine, put it on a flash drive, carry it across the room, and install that way03:03
linux_guycharlie-tca, all day wasn't literal03:04
forceslinux_guy, ubuntu.packages03:04
charlie-tcaI see, but you shouldn't need the flash drive until after the install, right?03:04
linux_guyi cannot find the bios to even try to boot from usb03:04
linux_guythis thing had win98 LOL03:04
charlie-tcaWhat brand?03:04
linux_guycompaq03:05
charlie-tcaF1103:05
linux_guyf8,f1?03:05
linux_guyok03:05
charlie-tcaor f203:05
linux_guyjust tap tap tap on startup?03:05
forceshttp://packages.ubuntu.com/03:05
charlie-tcaYeah, I got three of them. My newest uses F1003:05
linux_guyactually i tried tapping all of the F** keys at once during bootup two different times03:05
forceshttp://packages.ubuntu.com/intrepid/all/xfce4/download03:05
forcesdownload xfce403:05
forcesdpkg -i package.deb03:06
forcesthat's all03:06
charlie-tcaI think I would try just f10 and f1103:06
linux_guyok got it03:07
charlie-tcaYou get the silly splash screen in the way, and sometimes it hits and goes right through when you are tapping.03:07
linux_guythink this machine will run somewhat nice with xfce instead of gnome?03:07
charlie-tcaIt should, if you don't fill it with heavier applications.03:08
charlie-tcaYou may even find firefox too much, and will want to try epiphany or midori instead03:08
linux_guyi have a family member using my core2/asus/nvidia rig as a web browser and solitaire03:08
linux_guy^^^ sucks ^^^03:09
charlie-tca:(03:09
linux_guyso im going to make a minimalistic machine for them, and get mine back =)03:09
charlie-tcaI like epiphany on my old systems. It runs smoother than firefox on them03:10
linux_guyeh, it was free, i just did it to mess around, but i would like a smooth running machine though03:10
* linux_guy is down for a challenge03:10
charlie-tcaI run a PII, 400Mhz with 384MHz ram part time03:11
charlie-tca384 MB Ram, I guess03:12
charlie-tcaNow I gotta ask - no network card? How they gonna cruise the net?03:13
linux_guydependancy is not satisfiable:  gtk2-engines-xfce03:14
linux_guycharlie-tca, it has an external adapter that plugs in via usb03:14
linux_guywhy the error msg?03:15
charlie-tcaI see.03:15
charlie-tcaThe error is a themes engine. I don't know why it came up. Did the install stop?03:15
linux_guyyes i could not install.  install package was 'grayed out'03:16
charlie-tcaInstall using the alternate cd instead of the live cd03:16
* linux_guy grows a beard03:16
charlie-tcayeah, I know03:16
linux_guydownload another iso, then burn, then install?03:17
linux_guythis time in xubuntu?03:17
charlie-tcaI'm afraid so. What were you in the last time?03:17
linux_guyonce i do all this, im a little nervous about getting this network thing to work03:17
linux_guyubuntu03:17
linux_guyis what i started in03:17
charlie-tcaHave it plugged in during the install. It may pick it up.03:18
charlie-tcaYou got ubuntu on this old machine?03:18
linux_guyYEAH! at 75% cpu and 75% memory at IDLE.... YIKES03:18
linux_guylol03:18
linux_guywould an older version, say 8.04 be beneficial>?03:19
charlie-tcaTry the usb network thing. If you get it to work, you can use sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop03:19
charlie-tcato install xubuntu.03:19
charlie-tca8.10 used less resources than 8.04, I think.03:19
* linux_guy opens the box03:19
charlie-tcaYou would have to back up to about 6.0603:20
charlie-tcaThe upgrades are not fun, from there.03:20
charlie-tcaforces:03:20
charlie-tcaforces: any idea on the usb network things?03:20
linux_guyholy crap03:24
charlie-tca??03:24
linux_guythe network thing picked right up automatically03:24
charlie-tcaThat's what it should do. Now you can install xubuntu-desktop and then delete what you don't want, if you don't want to download another cd03:25
linux_guystrange it cant find xubuntu-desktop03:25
linux_guysudo apt-get xubuntu-desktop03:26
linux_guycrap03:26
charlie-tcahuh?03:26
linux_guysudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop03:26
charlie-tcaYou have to go to software sources and enable universe03:27
linux_guyany other prereq's?03:27
charlie-tcaI enable all main universe multiverse restricted03:28
charlie-tcaThey are all on the first tab, Ubuntu Software03:28
linux_guyyeah, they are all checked03:30
charlie-tcathen do sudo apt-get update03:31
linux_guywell the internet is about the only thing that is fast on this thing lol03:32
linux_guyfirefox takes it to 100% immediately03:32
charlie-tcayeah, I believe it. That's why I went to epiphany. It used the mozilla engine, but less resources03:34
charlie-tcaBonus: all the firefox plugins worked too03:34
linux_guyepiphany is ok on security too?03:34
charlie-tcasure, it isn't on windows.03:35
linux_guylol03:35
linux_guyfunny thing, i installed win7 on my VM the other day.  first thing i saw?  error msg03:35
charlie-tcaheh03:35
linux_guyif you close a terminal window while its working.... say installing xubuntu it continues on right?03:37
charlie-tcanot that I know...03:37
charlie-tcaMine always quit when I close the terminal.03:38
linux_guyman this thing is slow03:42
* linux_guy builds a house out of popsicle sticks03:42
charlie-tcaslow is good, isn't it? You can see what is not happening!03:53
linux_guyslow is crazy slow04:10
wolfjbwill xubuntu be releasing packages of xfce4.6 when it is released?04:47
wolfjbor do we have to wait until the next xubuntu release?04:47

wwbwwbanyone can speak chinese?07:12
macrobadHey, #xubuntu! Could someone advise me on setting up keyboard layout switching?07:42
macrobadI've entered the configuration needed in xorg.conf, but it seems that Xfce doesn't really follow it, or otherwise the config is wrong.07:43
MacGyverNL|LTI have a "problem" with the Xubuntu 8.10 liveCD, confirmed working on another machine. This is hardware from 1999, mind, so yes, I do get a BIOS cutoff error saying ACPI is not available and such. Also, when loading the LiveCD, I get a little error box containing a bunch of numbers and the message "err 2". When I press return, a basic menu loads. I can then pick "try Xubuntu", and Xubuntu boots (takes a long time, though), and XFC08:53
MacGyverNL|LTE loads fine. *however*, and this is the problem, the console only shows blocks.08:53
MacGyverNL|LTThis also happens when doing the CD integrity check.08:53
MacGyverNL|LTAnd by "blocks" I mean ascii char 127, alternated with blanks or other ascii 127's, usually in the normal console text color but sometimes in blue or brown.08:55
ablomenMacGyverNL|LT, have you tried the same cd on a different pc?09:00
MacGyverNL|LTYes.09:01
MacGyverNL|LTOn my laptop it boots up just fine.09:01
MacGyverNL|LTLike I said, it's very old hardware, a 450MHz CPU and 196 MiB RAM.09:01
ablomenwell one problem might be the 196mb of ram, thats (verry close to) the minimum required by the livecd09:03
MacGyverNL|LTBut why does XFCE work?09:06
MacGyverNL|LTI mean, if anything, I'd expect XFCE / X.org to fail miserably but the consoles to come up.09:06
ablomennot sure, it might be a problem in the ram itself too (corrupt ram)09:07
ablomenyou could try running memtest09:07
ablomenwill take a lot of time though09:07
MacGyverNL|LTNot really an option.09:08
MacGyverNL|LTYou see, I'm trying to "convert" the only internet-office-PC at my dad's workplace from Windows ME to Xubuntu, so the experience has to be good for the single day they run the LiveCD. Personally, I'm inclined to build them a new system from old hardware I have lying around.09:09
MacGyverNL|LTI mean, the oldest CPU I've got is still way faster than 450 MHz. And I'm bound to have some RAM lying around... And If I'm converting them to (X)ubuntu anyway I might as well put some time into it.09:11
ablomenyeah i'd do that then, better then letting them run on a 450mhz pc.. that wont be a great first impression i can imagine, especially from a livecd09:16
MacGyverNL|LTWell, on the other hand, if I can get their Brother 1840C USB fax/printer to work under Xubuntu, it'll be a better impression than with ME.09:24
ablomenlol well yeah ok its up against windows me, but still :P09:39
MacGyverNL|LTThanks anyway.09:48
MacGyverNL|LTCya.09:48

_msk_hi...when an application doesn't respond...how do i terminate it ?18:40
zoredacheif you press ctrl-alt-esc your pointer will change to an 'x'.  Click on the window of the app you want to kill18:42
_msk_zoredache: thanx18:44
zoredache_msk_: you could also startup the 'system monitor' from the applications->system menu18:44
zoredacheon the processes tab you can right click on a process and end it18:44
zoredacheof course you could also start up a terminal and use something like kill, or killall18:45

Moodctrl+c or xkill or kill -9 pid18:46
Mood_msk_: what app is it? is it a GUI? or a terminal script?18:46

_msk_Mood : GUI app18:47
Mood_msk_: do you know how to bring up terminal?18:47
_msk_Mood : yaa18:47
Mood_msk_: you can type xkill, then point it at the unresponsive GUI18:47
Mood_msk_: or, in terminal, you can find the process id by typing ps and kill -9 ps#18:47
_msk_Mood : my system monitor is not working properly !18:50

Mood_msk_: what's wrong with it?18:53

_msk_Mood : In Xfce, it shows all processes ,but the CPU & Memory usage graphs are not working !18:57

charlie-tca_msk_: Also,if you installed xfce, not xubuntu-desktop, you may be missing dependencies.19:05
_msk_Mood : This happens every time when i log on to Xfce session...19:05
Moodsquidly: do you see your sound device listed?19:06
squidlyMood: nope19:06
squidlyMood: I need to fully reconfigure alsa on my box19:07
Moodsquidly: does it show in lspci?19:07
squidlyyes19:07
squidlybut there is nothign in /proc/asound19:07
Moodsquidly: you're getting no sound at all?19:08
squidlyMood: correct19:08
squidlyi was19:08
squidlybut then it sudenly dies with a reboot19:09
_msk_Mood : forgot to tell you....i get this error : "Connection to localhost has been lost"19:09
Moodsquidly: do you see anything doing an lsmod|egrep -i snd?19:10
squidlyMood: nope19:10
Mood_msk_: not sure if localhost is related to xcfe... sounds like you have more than one problem. how did you install xubuntu?19:11
_msk_Mood : i never installed Xubuntu...i just installed Xfce through Synaptic Package Manager in Ubuntu ..19:12
_msk_Mood : i have KDE , fluxbox, Enlightenment, Xfce , & GNOME DE's in my Ubuntu 8.04 :D19:13
Moodsquidly: did you ever try alsa-base?19:13
squidlyMood: what do you mean by that?19:14
squidlyalsa-base is installed19:14
Moodsquidly: alsa-base are configurationg files for ... oh ok19:14
squidlyMood: yea. I'm trying to get that to reconfigure19:15
Moodsquidly: i think i ran out of ideas :-/19:18
_msk_i guess having Multiple DE's causes a lot problem !19:20
Mood_msk_: perhaps the System Monitor is not compliant with your particular version of xfce(?) that's really the only thing i can think of19:23
Mood_msk_: the localhost issue seems to be something else altogether19:24
Moodsquidly: it's not just a volume issue i presume19:24
_msk_Mood : what i guess is that Xfce is unable to properly support a KDE app...19:25
squidlyMood: correct19:25
Mood_msk_: seems likely19:25
Moodsquidly: did you try /etc/init.d/alsa-utils restart19:25
Moodsquidly: i found the official troubleshooting site btw19:26
Moodsquidly: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting19:26
squidlyMood: i'll try that19:27
squidlybut alta-utils restart show's it works19:27
squidlybut dones not load my drivers19:27

squidly[noobytu]: lol19:30
Mood[noobytu]: you're welcome ;-)19:30
Moodsquidly: sounds like you're best bet is to start from the top of the page and work down :-/19:30
atgarsishello there19:32
atgarsisi got a problem with vlc player. it doesn't show subtitles. anyone know why is that?19:32
Moodatgarsis: do you have the corresponding subtitle file?19:37
atgarsisyes19:37
atgarsisi have an .srt file and it still doesn't show it19:37
Moodwhen you open the file from File->Open, do you see a place for the subtitle file?19:37
Moodyou can manually specify the location of the subtitle file19:38
Moodit's like the second text box after the main avi file19:38
atgarsisit still doesn't show. maybe i need to specify subtitles font?19:41
=== danopia__ is now known as danopia
Moodnah, i never specify font. should work. were you able to navigate to the load subtitle file text box and load it successfully?19:42

Odd-rationalecharlie-tca: looks good!22:21
Odd-rationalealthough, sometimes, i find the xfce save session feature kind of buggy... i just like to remove ~/.config/xfce4/ :P22:22
Odd-rationaleand clear the save session (i forgot where they are located...)22:22
Odd-rationale~/.cache/ ?22:22
charlie-tcaThanks22:26
charlie-tcaWe do clear ~/.config/xfce4/panel/22:27
charlie-tcaI don't knwo where saved sessions are22:27
Odd-rationale~/.cache/ i think...22:28
Odd-rationale~/.cache/saved_sessions22:28
charlie-tcaDoes that need to be removed too, then?22:28
Odd-rationalesometimes just removing that, disabling sessoin save, and reloggin in soves the problem...22:29
charlie-tcaI added that22:36
