EtFbzaapiel: It doesn't seem to integrate with KDE4 though, for some reason.  I advise praying to Google for guidance.00:00
* EtFb should have read three lines up before giving zaapiel that latter piece of advice00:02
EtFbkaddi: That much, at least, works for me, so whatever's wrong is something different between your machine and mine.  Best guess is your video driver: can you change back to vesa and see if the crashes go away?00:03

gorgonizer(after restarting the X server)  yes, I like to learn what I am doing as well, so it is easier in the future, if similar problems are found :)00:10
gorgonizerkaddi: it depends on what graphics card you have in your PC..00:10
EtFbkaddi: It00:10
EtFbkaddi: It'll probably be stable; it'll definitely be slower and less feature-full than the one you're using.  But it might not crash...00:11

hubar_EtFb: what is wrong with konversation for you? :)01:02
EtFbBeing able to split the screen to put the system messages at the top is good - means there's less clutter (BObama [n=chief@whitehouse.gov] as joined #kubuntu, and so on)01:02
syockitokay, installing kvirc now01:02
EtFbhubar_: Too many things I couldn't figure out how to do.  Typical KDE software: you need to know how to find and edit the config files to make it do stuff, and too many features aren't implemented yet.01:03
pkodonEtFb: I take it all of those programs are IRC-specific.01:03

pkodonEtFb: Okay, thanks for the input, I've been using Kopete because I often find myself having to be on both IM and IRC at the same time, and it has been nice to be able to see when someone has spoken to me on the other system.01:06

EtFbWalzmyn: 2 or 3 weeks without YouTube?  Unthinkable!01:08

EtFbWalzmyn: <apt-get --purge remove> the lot - I assume you're using Firefox - and make sure you've got the Medibuntu repos.  Then try it again.  Something must have gotten b0rked as you were installing.01:10
pkodonWalzmyn: You might also try installing Opera, but get the latest one from their website, not from the Ubuntu repository.01:10

EtFbZiRiS: I assumed you meant copy-paste via the clipboard too.01:16
gorgonizerZiRiS: yes, you should be able to use wildcards with the cp command..01:16
ZiRiSif wild characters are useable, what IS the wild character? * doesn't seem to work01:17
kaddiZiRiS: it's possible i've seen it on google this evening... not sure how it works though01:17
EtFbZiRiS: Wildcards are different in Linux.  Imagine you have a directory containing foo.txt. bar.txt and baz.log.  If you type somecommand *.txt, it gets converted by the shell processor to somecommand foo.txt bar.txt.01:17
ZiRiSsudo cp Xorg.conf.* /media/disk/etc/X11 gives me error message: cp: cannot stat `Xorg.conf.*': No such file or directory01:17
EtFbThat is, the shell expands it, so the somecommand never sees the * wildcard.01:18
ZiRiSI'm currently on the live cd since kubuntu wont load from the hdd01:18
EtFbZiRiS: If that's what you typed, fair enough. There's no Xorg.conf.* file there by default; the X should be lowercase.01:18
ZiRiSahhh, you're right01:19
ZiRiSEtFb: sweet, thx. That got it.01:19
EtFbZiRiS: Watch out also: in DOS, you can dir *.* and get all files; in Linux, that would only find files with dots in their names.01:19
hubar_hmm I am using the kde experimental PPA in the topic, but how come I still use amarok 1.4?01:20
ZiRiSsee...  what had happened was... I installed a fresh install of kubuntu after the same issue happened in ubuntu. I installed the recommended driver for my vid card (nVidia 8600GT) and rebooted, but xserver won't load. So I'm trying to copy the files listed previously and a few others to try to fix this. anyone else have a suggestion?01:21
gorgonizerhubar_: as amarok 2 isn't favoured by Amarok fans atm...01:21

EtFbNew puzzle: sometimes when I suspend, the pm-suspend.log shows all sorts of segfaults, on nearly every line.  How can I debug that?01:23
EtFbhubar_: kpackage is broken -- there are still some features that aren't implemented, like search.01:23
hubar_oh.01:23
EtFbhubar_: I'll be glad to see the end of Adept though; hideous unusable piece of crap.01:23
hubar_why?01:24
EtFbhubar_: I just hope kpackage is an improvement; doesn't look like it so far.01:24
gorgonizerEtFb: I agree with that, tend to use the command line to find/install packages..01:24
hubar_It is certainly not as good as synaptic though.01:24
EtFbhubar_: Basically because the people who designed it don't use it themselves.  So they haven't given it the usability improvements it needs.01:24

notrancubuntu_ if you are going to reinstall, create a separate partition for home. I don't know why that is not available by default! Separate /home makes it possible to reinstall without losing your home files.06:49

ubuntu_?06:51
|syockit|ubuntu_: it can be even more.06:51
|syockit|ubuntu_: by default you have a partition for whole ubuntu, and also another for swap06:52
|syockit|ubuntu_: usually people advise to create another partition for /home, as you want to reuse that when reinstalling os06:52

ubottuLAMP is an acronym for Linux-Apache-MySQL-PHP. However, the term is often used for setups using alternative but different software, such as Perl or Python instead of PHP, and Postgres instead of MySQL. ct529xp-killer: then it is not installed in any of the recognised paths, that is the reason because it does not work13:53

xp-killeri never linux can be so complicated lol this os is not for people with no experience with pc lol13:55
xp-killerct529: how do i add that?13:55
ct529!medibuntu13:55
ubottumedibuntu is a repository of packages that cannot be included into the Ubuntu distribution for legal reasons - See http://www.medibuntu.org13:55
ct529mefisto__: that would probably install the helix player13:55
mefisto__ct529: actually it is there for intrepid (I'm using hardy) but it is an older version13:56
ct529mefisto__: in what sense is 11 an older version?13:57

mefisto__ct529: the medibuntu repo has 1013:57
xp-killerct529: and the reason im installing this is for?13:57
ct529mefisto__: I am installing it right now from medibuntu, and it has 1113:57
ct529xp-killer: you add the repository where the software you want is .... that is realplayer13:58
ct529xp-killer: the software packages are in large databases on the internet, called repositories ....13:58
ct529xp-killer: very useful and very simple .... you add the database and then you can install whateve ris in the database13:58

ct529xp-killer: you used the WRONG command .... you are probably using 8.10 .... did you download the last stable?14:06
ct529xp-killer: use adept, remove the repository you have just added14:06
thedarknoboy here has ever had to bypass regions?14:06
ct529xp-killer: and then use the right command, that is sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list14:06
ct529xp-killer: then remember to add the gpg key. Use: sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get -y install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update14:07
ct529xp-killer: then apt-get install realplayer14:07
xp-killerct529: i had used the 9.04 comand14:07

GhidorahI am contemplating switching from ubuntu to kubuntu, and in the past I have heard of setting up a partition for software. If I were to do this, is it beneficial at all, or is it a matter of preference?15:31
* ct529 do not understand Ghidorah's question15:32
xp-killermefisto__: how long your using linux?15:32
carpiigenerally its a good idea to put /home on a new partition, so if your OS dies you havent lost all your settings and personal stuff15:32
xp-killerhow u know all of theses stuff?15:32
carpiias for software, well its up to you. But everything can be gotten from the repositories again if needs be, so its less of an issue15:33
mefisto__xp-killer: about 3 years with kubuntu, before that I tried a few livecds but didn't install15:33
Ghidorahhome is usually contained in the /root correct?15:33
Ghidorahok, well thank you capri15:33
carpiiits a directory in the root of the drive, yes15:33
xp-killermefisto__: u lurn all of that in 3 years?15:33
carpiibut not in /root, which is a seperate directory15:33
mefisto__Ghidorah: your home is in /home/user-name/ for each user15:34
Ghidorahok, my mistake15:34
xp-killermefisto__: u work for the linux guys or your just a guy home?15:34

GhidorahThe harddrive on the machine is 120GB, I am going to set 2GB for RAM, 100MB for boot, so I have to split the remaining 117GB between /root, and /home. Is there a too small size for the /root/15:36

garriokay...so i'm using oss...how do we change that?18:24
the1beast1withincan someone anwer me a question?18:24
downhill_garri: ok, that's easier to read ;) the top set (/dev/snd/*) represents all your ALSA-driven sound connections from applications. kmix and (for some reason) kpdf are both talking to your ALSA drivers. amarok is using /dev/dsp, which is the OSS device. OSS can only do 1 sound at a time, so right now nothing else can play sound on your system18:24
garrihmm...interesting18:25
downhill_yeah so what we want to do is figure out exactly why it's not working. you already showd your ALSA driver is loaded (which doesn't mean a whole lot honestly)18:25
mefisto__sudo alsa force-reload   will restart alsa and kill any apps using it18:25

downhill_that's what I'm doing22:35
downhill_my was-Windows partition of 200GB is now my "let's see how f-ed up I can make my display" partition :p22:35
downhill_what kind of graphics card do you have?22:36
mefisto__downhill_: just an onboard ati, nothing special22:37

alarmhello, i am experiencing a problem with firefox. firefox and facebook actually . most of the images on my facebook account do not open at all (neither the thumbnails) , and all i can see are the comments.22:37
downhill_ah ok22:37
alarmfirst thing i did was to erase all temporary files, but still not fixed. and to make it sure,  it tried Konqueror which just worked fine22:37
alarmi know its a firefox-relevant topic, but thought that i could have to do with ubuntu maybe22:37
downhill_I had an HD3870X2 but I swapped it with a relative's HD3650 because they do a whole lot more gaming than me these days22:38
downhill_should work better that way anyway22:38
downhill_alarm: #firefox :)22:38
downhill_you guessed right, hehe22:38
alarmlooks like everyone is sleeping :)22:39
downhill_more or less22:39
alarmbtw, what does the firefox metapackage do ?22:40
mefisto__alarm: try starting firefox in safe mode to disable extensions, see if it works that way. firefox -safe-mode22:40
alarmokie22:40
alarm i will give that a try , thank you :)22:40
mefisto__if you have any extensions installed, that is22:41
WalzmynIs 4.2 in the standard repo for janunty or just the PPA?22:41
alarmactually by runnign firefox i noticed errors on the console22:41
Walzmynalarm, a meta package will grab other packages - so firefox will grab firefox 322:41
alarm(npviewer.bin:21702): Gtk-WARNING22:41
alarmi will check whats wrong with it. maybe that is causing the problems22:42
downhill_alarm: highly unlikely22:42
alarmWalzmyn,  you confused me :)22:42
downhill_npviewer is probably nspluginwrapper running 32-bit flash^22:42
MidnightDevilhey duds :)22:42
musicalhi folks22:43
MidnightDevilmy kde desktop is kinda heavy and sluggish.. im using nvidia drivers (activated) .. any tips? i have a amd 4800 X2 with a 8600 GTS22:43
downhill_unless of course these images are in flash :p22:43
mefisto__alarm: did facebook load ok in safemode?22:43
downhill_MidnightDevil: update to the 180 series drivers.22:43
alarmmefisto__,  i am trying give me a second22:43
MidnightDevildownhill_: manually or through ubuntu tools?22:44
downhill_btw AMD doesn't make a 4800 X2, nor can you run both of them at the same time22:44
MidnightDevilwhat?22:44
Walzmynalarm, a meta package is not an application it just pulls in other packages - for instance the KDE-Games meta package will install about 50 other packages that are applications for games22:44
downhill_MidnightDevil: by "manually" I mean via the repos, so adept or apt-get22:44
MidnightDevilok22:44
downhill_MidnightDevil: @ the latter, I'm saying you're not making any sense with the hardware info22:44
alarmok got it :)22:45
MidnightDevildownhill_:  i gave ya the cpu info.. which is a amd 4800 :)22:45
alarmmefisto__,  yeap problem remains22:45
downhill_MidnightDevil: oh athlon64 X2 4800+, ok22:45
downhill_sorry, misunderstood :p22:45
alarmbut get several firefox errors that i will check one by one22:45
alarmERROR: ld.so: object '/usr/$LIB/libartsdsp.so.0' from LD_PRELOAD cannot be preloaded: ignored. for example this one22:45
MidnightDeviltks :) brb22:46
downhill_alarm: open a terminal please, cd to wherever your firefox install is and ./firefox-bin22:46
downhill_'cuz it sounds like it's trying to load stuffs you really do not want nor need22:47

thiago__hi there, i followed the instruction at kubuntu.org for installing KDE 4.2, but after installation, I could login but the keyboard was not working and also there were no window borders... any clue anyone? thanks in advance...22:47
downhill_alarm: do tell :)22:47
alarmfor some reason a whole url of facebook was added in the blocklist of firefox22:47
downhill_still odd that it's trying to load arts, alarm.22:48
alarmdidnt think of it. just went through preferences to see any kind of restrictions22:48
downhill_thiago__: kwin isn't running. you could try going into your user directory from a terminal or something and removing the kwinrc files22:49
alarmno clue22:49
downhill_thiago__: like in ~/.kde/share/config/kwin*22:49
alarmat least now i found out :)22:49
thiago__hmmm, thanks, I'll try that22:49
downhill_alarm: indeed =D22:49
alarmthank you for helping though :)22:49
downhill_hah it was all you22:50
downhill_I'm just babbling at this point waiting for some updates to finish downloading :p22:50
Musicalearlier today I installed KDE 4.2 over 4.1 and KDE desktop was no longer available on the menu! I had to use XFCE. After trying all sorts of "cures" I discovered that all I had to do was install kde-workspace (using synaptic) and my problem was immediately solved!22:50
mnd999Hi all, I had big krita problems with the kde 4.2 upgrade - got a file clash which resulted in the upgrade half working. Then I got dependency hell and had to upgrade -f which caused a world of pain. Is this a known one?22:50
MusicalHope this is of help to someone22:51
mnd999yes, i had the kde-workspace one as well22:51
alarmi am waiting for some decent application that will add automount option for external devices :)22:51
downhill_Musical: moral of the story: don't remove random packages :)22:51
Musicaldidnt remove anything - it just was not installed!22:51

downhill_um, which release are you running?22:52
Musicalkubuntu 8.122:52
downhill_8.10?22:52

downhill_with the ppa repo, right?22:52
Musicalcorrect22:52
downhill_interesting =D it updated fine here22:52
Musical:)22:53
mnd999you didnt have a package clash like me?22:53
downhill_no.22:53
Musicaljust plasma22:53
Musicalwhich I removed as required22:53
downhill_libplasma2, right?22:53
downhill_replaced by libplasma322:53
mefisto__I also had a problem with gwenview after the 4.2 upgrade, but I just removed/reinstalled it and all was fine22:53
downhill_ah that one I did have (the gwenview one)22:54
Musicalafterwards I found I had to reinstall kate22:54
downhill_same, I just removed it and told it to reinstall.22:54
Musicalwell all roads may lead to Rome..:)22:54
downhill_just caught me because I updated not too long ago w/o a problem =D that's all22:55
Musicalgreat22:56
mnd999ahh i think i kno what i did - i didnt remove koffice-data-kde422:56
kaddiok, is there a way to delete all settings plasma may have made to itself? I've got a complete f** up desktop and i'm not allowed to change anything22:56
kaddican i just delete plasmarc? or do i need to delete more than that?22:56
mnd999killing .kde would probably do it but you probably dont want to do that22:56
Musicalmy problem may have been caused because I had both KDE 3.5 amd 4 installed  befor I upgraded to 8.122:56
kaddimnd999 a bit less radical would be nice ;)22:57
kaddibut if there's no other way i'll delete .kde :)22:57
mnd999im no expert, that would probably work, but yes there is probably a better way22:58
downhill_kaddi: yeah you can just remove plasmarc and friends22:58
kaddiwhat would be "and friends"? everything with "plasma" in his name?22:59
mnd999if i were you id start another X with irc in with a reliable desktop (personally i go for xterm/twm) and experiment moving the files away until it works22:59
downhill_heh plasma_appletsrc or whatever22:59
mnd999but downhill seems to know the answer22:59
downhill_well yeah, I keep fluxbox around just for that.22:59
kaddiok, yeah... going to delete those 2 files and see what happens :)22:59
downhill_kaddi: moving them, as mnd999 said, is always a better option ;)23:00
downhill_you can always move them back then ;)23:00
downhill_brb...23:00
kaddikk ;)23:00
MidnightDevilback23:00
MidnightDevildownhill_: , sorry, but how do i exacly "upgrade" to the 180 series?23:00
kaddiwayy better now :D23:04
mnd999great23:04
kaddiis there a way to use window decoration with kde 4.2?23:05
mnd9994.2 upgrade seems to have killed my desktop slideshow as well and set it back to kubuntu blue23:06
mnd999not sure if that a kubuntuism or a kdeism23:06
=== erwin_ is now known as vaiursch
kaddii had all widgets put on the same spot in the center of my desktop... not being allowed to drag them nor remove them :D23:07
mnd999i only had the amarok one and it didnt work anyway so i deleted before the upgrade23:08
ulysses__hy all, i want to install http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/New+Device+Notifier+with+Automount?content=91517, but i can't do it, because http://paste.ubuntu.com/116233/23:08
ulysses__can somebody help me?23:08
kaddii haven't done the upgrade now.. don't know what triggered that behaviour. but  i have been playing with different themes for plasma this afternoon23:08
mnd999uly do you have the plasma headers?23:10

MidnightDeviltks :-)23:14
mnd999not a good idea to just install nvidias in my experience - need to check kernel is compatible first23:14
ubuntu_i just installed vmware and now when i login it tries to do something then takes me back to the login screen, anything anyone23:14
ghostcubemnd999, ??23:14
eutychushello. i have spent the last two days trying to get kubuntu to connect to the dell aio 966. someone said that they dont make drivers for it for linux. is there a workaround or am i going to have to sell the dell for a printer that wll work with kubuntu?23:15
ubuntu_so, i uninstalled in command line and its still broke23:16
alarmmnd999, compatibility is not an issue as long he has a new version of kubuntu23:16
MidnightDevilbrb23:16
alarmi always install nvidia binaries from nvidia website. easier and less problems than from the repo23:17
mnd999alarm true, but given the pain in fixing it if the kernel isnt updating properly for whatever reason it only takes 2 secs to do uname -a23:17

mnd999alarm - its happened to me before, grub update doesnt work and you then end up with a system booting an old kernel with new nvidia and x wont start without hacking the config23:20
alarmhacking ? modifying u mean :)23:20
ghostcubehmm if u install the nvidia package it will use the existing kernel so grub should boot up fine23:21
ghostcubeif u install a new kernel u must choose remove menu.lst by new one23:21
ghostcubeif not it wont work23:22
