darkenergytight budget01:44
=== root is now known as Guest67318
mefisto__darkenergy: is it kbluetooth that is the problem, or is it some underlying problem?01:50
darkenergyunderlying01:51
darkenergythe entire bluez implementation was changed01:51
darkenergyi think some issues have been resolved but don't think it's quite there yet01:52
inanimateDoes KDE 4.2 support multi-monitor in ways other than cloning your existing screen?01:52
darkenergyi would be really surprised if it didn't01:53
darkenergyi think that's an X feature01:53
inanimateIn 4.1 there was an option in Display Settings to change it, but that option has since disappeared.01:54
downhill_yeah that doesn't have much to do with desktop environments :)01:54
inanimateYeah, that's the idea...01:54
darkenergythe problem is configuration options are not always there01:54
inanimateBut chaning your xorg.conf is a hassle with multi-monitor.01:54
downhill_you're telling me.01:54
* downhill_ points at his shut-off 19" CRT01:55
* inanimate points at his shut off 17" LCD...01:55
inanimateWhich is why 4.2 was so awesome because not only did it do it for you, but it worked magically.01:55
darkenergyi don't care for magically01:55
inanimateExcept now you can only clone screens.01:55
downhill_can't you do it with amdcccle/nvidia-whatever01:55
downhill_nvidia-settings01:55
inanimateGMA 950...01:56
* downhill_ shrugs01:56
darkenergythe whole reason i chose KDE over GNOME in the first place was configurability01:56
darkenergymost settings were central in kcontrol01:56
inanimateNo NVIDIA settings over here... It's an integrated Intel.01:56
inanimateYeah.01:56
downhill_that's only one small part of why I like KDE401:57
downhill_er love, really...01:57
inanimateDefinitely a small part for me, but not being able to do left of, right of, et cetera, arguably makes multi-monitor for non-presentations useless.01:57
darkenergyi should upgrade01:57
inanimateBecause seeing my screen twice isn't exactly going to help productivity.01:57
downhill_typos - now in stereo!01:58
darkenergyinanimate: those configuration frontends edit the xorg.conf file anyway01:58
downhill_honestly I've yet to see anything match Windows' multi-monitor support. it's awesome.01:58
inanimatedownhill_: Heh, exactly!01:58
darkenergyif you really want it, do it the old fashioned way01:58
inanimatedarkenergy: I suppose...01:59
inanimateI was just curious if there was actually a documented reason why the frontend can't do it.01:59
inanimateOr, rather, can't do it *anymore*.01:59
inanimate(Could in 4.1)01:59
darkenergyhmm, can't you install kcontrol from kde3? would that work?01:59
inanimateHmm...02:00
inanimatePerhaps.02:00
inanimateI don't even know if KDE 3 could even do anything good with multi monitor though.02:00
darkenergyit does02:00
inanimateFrom what I remember it was useless.02:00
downhill_well, if you make sure KDE4's doesn't try applying settings and you avoid opening the Display KCM for it ;)02:00
downhill_er applying settings at log-in*02:01
inanimateIt would probably only apply the settings once you apply them in the KCM.02:01
downhill_there's an option for persistence in the KDE4 one02:02
inanimateI wonder if RandR can do it...02:02
downhill_give it a shot02:02
inanimatePersistence?02:02
downhill_yeah, keeping settings across (X server) reboots02:02
inanimateInteresting, where's that?02:03
downhill_it says "Apply these settings at log-in time" or something to that effect. uh *looks*02:03
downhill_well it *did* wtf02:04
inanimateYeah, I didn't see it.02:04
downhill_they've moved some things around... looking02:04
mefisto__they upgraded it on you downhill_ !02:04
downhill_I can't find it anywhere anymore, inanimate >.< it was there tho, I swear02:06
inanimateSo how does it reload the xorg.conf without restarting X?02:06
downhill_it doesn't. KDE stores it's own settings and appl(ied?) them on boot02:06
inanimateOh...02:07
inanimateBecause I'm wondering where the dual montior settings are stored and I want to slightly hack them to potentially position the screen.02:07
inanimateAnd xorg.conf definitely looks to not be the place...02:07
downhill_it is, unless you use xrandr02:07
inanimateI think KDE is using xrandr.02:09
downhill_intel stuff most probably does02:09
downhill_KDE can, yes02:09
inanimateThere's the KDE krandrtray, which mirrors xrandr's output.02:09
inanimateAnd the KCM module looks to be in sync with xrandr.02:10
downhill_like when I used Windows, I keep that crap outta my tray :p02:10
downhill_mhmm02:10
inanimateYeah, me too.02:10
inanimateI wanted to see if it could do non-cloning.02:10
downhill_yeah. you prolly need the command-line tool for that.02:10
inanimateOh, I think I see what the hell is going on.02:12
inanimateSo KDE *does* support the feature, but naturally the Intel drivers are sucking.02:12
inanimateAnd by KDE, I mean KDE's xrandr frontend.02:12
downhill_Xorg? shitty drivers? never.02:12
inanimateBlasphemy.02:13
downhill_:)02:13
inanimateBut yeah...02:13
inanimatexrandr --output VGA --left-of LVDS02:13
inanimatexrandr: screen cannot be larger than 1400x1400 (desired size 2680x1050)02:13
downhill_hah!02:13
inanimateSo that's definitely the drivers bitching.02:13
downhill_I'm gonna plug in my 2nd monitor. $5 says my system hangs. *grabs cable*02:14
inanimateFound a workaround on a blog about basically this exact issue with my hardware setup (ThinkPad T60, et cetera). I guess you lose direct rendering, but I don't really care.02:15
darkenergyhow's the adhoc wireless networking in intrepid?02:16
inanimateSo it looks like KDE knew the feature would fail, so didn't show the option. I suppose that's better than GNOME's implementation (shows the option but it doesn't do anything), but I feel the ideal solution would be to show the option disabled (with possibly an explanation), or even better, implement a hack to get it to work.02:17
downhill_nope, just X.org *surprise*02:17
inanimateOne day KDE's frontend (and xrandr) will 1up Windows.02:18
inanimateOne day...02:18
downhill_keep saying it. maybe it'll happen. *doesn't hold breath*02:20
inanimateHonestly, if your hardware doesn't suck, I'm pretty sure it basically works at this point.02:21
downhill_don't get me wrong, I love the OS, I love the desktop, but boy do I hate Xorg :p02:21
inanimateYeah, I hear that.02:21
darkenergyinanimate: your second monitor is larger than the first?02:22
inanimateIn size but not in resolution...02:23
darkenergytry specifying a size then02:23
inanimateWhat do you mean?02:24
VioletsPie_I have noticed that my university's computer science department uses kubuntu and not ubuntu, why is that?02:24
hubar_hmm, how do I add/remove/edit stuff that is in my favorite menu?02:24

VioletsPie_there's a "linux lab" and they run kubuntu02:25
downhill_pretty cool. you should take some pix and upload 'em to a blog or flickr album or something =D02:26

VioletsPie_when i have a chance02:29
hubar_A lot of broken stuff.02:29

ahmed_what?09:38

gajoplike what application09:38
TeLLuSgajop: I see no auto eth009:39
gajopTeLLuS: is there any place I can edit which daemons boot and in which order... since this is pretty much chaotic (i.e for some reason mpd (music daemon) boots before sound, and reports not having a viable card, yet works when i restart it)09:39
gajopTeLLuS: well, since i dont want it to be DHCP... i want it to be static, not dynamic09:40
ct529TeLLuS: it says it is a PPTP vpn service ....09:40
TeLLuSgajop: No need to put in network and broadcast09:40
ct529TeLLuS: user authentication through login and password09:40
gajopTeLLuS: yes, but surely that doesn't cause the errors...09:40
TeLLuSgajop: iface eth0 inet static tells that it is static.. auto tells it to setup this ip when the computer starts  and also that networkmanager should not touch it09:42
gajopTeLLuS: ahh, i thought auto means dynamic...09:42
gajopso like this: http://pastebin.com/m33a0435 ?09:43

esdaniel>yoyoyo while I'm waiting for some help can you post your q as I just joined, maybe i can lend a hand12:00
yoyoyoyoIs any version of Ubuntu or Kubuntu that have Ekiga on it?12:00
etfbesdaniel: It's pretty dead here right now.  I got MSN working happily with Pidgin, which I prefer over Kopete.  What trouble are you encountering?12:00
yoyoyoyo???12:01
esdanielhi eftb - i have the status "connecting" but it has not got any further - my jabber IDs login fine12:01
yoyoyoyoIs any version of Ubuntu or Kubuntu that have Ekiga on it? i don`t lnow to much of linux...12:02
yoyoyoyopls help me12:02
esdanielsorry yoyoyo, know nothing about Ekiga12:02
yoyoyoyoUbuntu have Ekiga?12:02
yoyoyoyoit`s like a mess... .12:03
etfbyoyoyoyo: Ekiga is available in the repositories, as far as I can see.12:03
etfbOpen up Add/Remove Programs and type "ekiga" to search for it.12:03
esdanielhttp://tinyurl.com/b4227q12:03
esdaniel:-)12:04
etfbesdaniel: Cruel but fair...12:04
esdanieleftb - i must fess up that it WAS working.... upgraded to 4.2 over weekend, love it, msn was working fine then i did some housekeeping and worried i killed a lib or dependency12:05
etfbIn cases like that, I'd trust apt to know what it's doing.  sudo apt-get --purge remove kopete and then reinstall it.12:06
giarcabut kopete support irc protocol?12:08
giarcaor I misunderstand...12:08
esdanielok interesting, after purging and then re-installing - when i open up config to re-add accounts it does not show me the list of services to select from12:10
esdanielnor the plugins12:10
esdanielso i guess besides "sudo apt-get install kopete" there's some other wonders I need to install12:10
etfbesdaniel: Really?  Weird!  Try deleting the Kopete configuration directory... if you can figure out where it is...12:11
esdaniel./kde/share/apps/kopete as it happens, ok 2 secs12:11
virniketfb: problem fixed... and to answer your question, which and where showed everything OK.12:12
esdanielahh, not entirely sure but think i found the problem - just been browsing ./kde/share/config/ and in kopeterc there's 2 entries for the msn ID12:14
etfbesdaniel: Aha!12:15
esdanielok, good progress - the service list is back for adding new accounts12:17
esdanielneed to delete the IM info for MSN account from kopeterc as it has not reappeared , though Jabber accounts fine12:18
esdanielnope that didn't do it, going to kill the kopeterc file now12:23
esdanielhmm, back to same situation - (have deleted ./kde/share/config/kopeterc & ./kde/share/apps/kopete, relaunched kopete, added the msn account info)12:28

Shiva42when will kde 4.2 become default DE of kubuntu?12:33
esdanielwhy shiva?12:34
JontheEchidnaShiva42: KDE 4.2 will become the default DE in Kubuntu 9.0412:35
esdanielany other ideas to troubleshoot the kopete/msn thing?12:37
keldronahello guys, just a question... I use Kubuntu, I can send file from computer to my phone with bluetooth, but I CAN'T from my phone to my computer. Have you got any idea?12:38
keldronaThanks12:38
etfbesdaniel: That's weird.  Try installing Pidgin and see if it works.  If it does, you have the choice to (a) try to figure out what's different, or (b) just use Pidgin.12:38
Shiva42kde 4.1 was a raw version, stable ( for me) but very incomplete... 4.2 has some bug yet, but is a decent thing...12:39
Tm_TShiva42: wouldn't say that way, but yes, some people see it so12:40
Shiva42i think that normal users will be happy to see 4.1 swithcing with 4.2, but htay have to wait for april...12:41
Shiva42maybe upgrading by the default repository in this days would be better...12:42
Shiva42IMHO12:42
etfbShiva42: You can upgrade personally using the kubuntu-experimental repositories.  That's good enough for testing.  I REALLY wouldn't rely on 4.2 (or on 4.1, frankly) for daily use unless you're a masochist... like me...12:43
Shiva42(sorry for my poor english , i'm from italy!)12:43
Shiva42yes... it's reasonable. but when on october kubuntu upgraded with kde 4.1 i take it ( i trust kubuntu mangers)12:45
etfbShiva42: I think they made a huge mistake.  KDE 4.1 was a disaster.  It even convinced Linus Torvalds to change over to Gnome!12:45
JontheEchidnaetfb: actually KDE *4.0* made him switch12:47
Dr_Willis'progress often has to be forced on people' :)12:47
JontheEchidna4.2 is worlds better12:47
etfbDr_Willis: So do thumbscrews.12:47
Dr_WillisYep.12:47
esdaniel4.2 is pretty good - I like it a lot - i think it was an interesting gamble on the part of KDE team i.e. once KDE4.x is good enough will people rush back who left12:47
etfbJontheEchidna: I agree entirely.  KDE 4.2 is the first usable KDE 4.x12:47
Dr_Williswith out forceing 4.x out... then 4.2 would been slower to get here also.  thats just how things often are.12:48
etfbAlthough it would be nice if Hibernate and Suspend would work more than a third of the time... but I suspect that's a race condition in the kernel.12:48
esdanielbiggest mistake is confusing users who can handle unstable environments from majority of kde users12:48
Dr_WillisFrom the looks of it - ext4 is getting the big push next12:48
etfbDr_Willis: I trust the disk OS team more than I trust the desktop team(s) at the moment, so that doesn't worry me.12:49
etfbDr_Willis: I'll probably upgrade to Jaunty as soon as it's out (usually I wait a month) but if it seems to be broken, I'll probably go back to Hardy.12:49
Dr_WillisPulse Audio also might of gotten pushed out a bit too fast.. but  ive have had few problems with it..   thats just how things happen when you try to stickto your release schedules.12:50
Dr_WillisIve learned to wait a month - befor  upgradeing. :)12:50
Dr_Willistesting out new distros in virtualbox at the moment. just to see what else is out there.12:50
Dr_WillisNone really 'stand' out  above the rest.   Found a nice little Web-browser-koisk live cd however. :)12:52
etfbWell, I was hoping to finish downloading the latest Heroes episode and have time to watch it before bed, but it's nearly midnight so I think I'll flake now.  Good luck with your various weirdnesses, all, and good night.12:53
esdanielyep Dr.W, best way is to test in a vm to protect existing deployments12:54
esdanielif you're doing mass rollout check out clonezilla12:55
Assurbanipalhi guys... i installed kde4 on my ubuntu machine and now i wanna get rid of gnome. is there a command i can use to uninstall it?12:55
Dr_WillisYep. I really like this  'slitaz' mini-live-cd-disrto.. but its not getting much love/updates it seems.. TInyCore is also one to watch in the future. :)12:55
Dr_WillisIm Just playig with my home lan mainly12:55
Dr_Williswell time to test out this install... bbl12:57
ajohnsenAm i the only one who experience problems with the MSN-service in kopete?12:57
Shiva42i think that it would be better upgrading in this days (after 27/01 kde 4.2 release) and give users a more usable and complete DE... i'm using 4.2 and excluding some minor bugs it's a real (growing ) DE12:57
Shiva424.1 was a patchwork12:57
Shiva42what koepte version are you using?12:58
ajohnsen0.70.0. But worked yesterday12:58
esdanielhi ajohnsen, been trying to fix kopete myself today12:58
Shiva42me too...i'm not expereincing msn porblems12:59
ajohnsencan you log off and on again?12:59
Shiva42i got porblems while chatting with a friend that has emesene client12:59
esdanielthings to check... ./kde/share/config/kopeterc - you probably want to delete that as it might have duplicate instances of the msn config in the file, worth takinga look12:59
ajohnsenit could be the local server for my area that have some problems12:59
esdanielit would be bloody typical i just lost 2 hours trying to fix this if it's the msn servers again13:00
Shiva42goodbye to all13:01

sandGorgonguys, is there a way to create a lightweight Kubuntu version for use on old machines? I think all we need is a browser and OpenOffice13:19
Dr_willisI dont think you are going to get a kde 4.x 'light' :) but it depeds on what you system specs are..13:20

sandGorgonPent II13:21
Dario_AndresHi to everyone. A small question: is Adept a Qt-only app? (no KApplication) ?  Thanks in advice13:22
sandGorgonI think there is edu-nix, which is based on slax and has now KDE 4.2 ... but I want to stay within the Ubuntu family13:22
Dr_willisYou may want to try out some of the very-minimal-disrtos out there sandGorgon  - or try a minimal ubuntu variant and install just what you need..13:22
kuaeraDario_Andres: Yes, it is. And I think you mean "thanks in advance".13:22
Dr_williscrunchbang = ubuntu with openbox  - that will save some.. but Openoffice will be a large hog of power/memory13:23

vbgunzin 8.10, I had a GeForce 5600 (256MB, AGP 4x) and twinview felt great. In Jaunty, using a 7900GTX,7950GX2 (2x512MB, PCI-E 16x) it feels choppy. prior I had a single core 2.6GHz. Now I have a Quad 2.6GHz processor. why does compositing feel worse in a sense now on twinview?13:38
sandGorgonvbgunz: i would say the new Xorg drivers are not stable.13:39
