KyMc1985hey all, wondering where i can get an older release of xubuntu for mac-ppc (330MHz).00:03
geniiKyMc1985: Maybe check in ##ubuntu-powerpc ... not a lot of users there but someone may eventually know00:05
KyMc1985thx, its old and osx can go on it but i dont got the right cds for it lol00:08
charlie-tcaKyMc1985: how old? 6.06 good enough?00:08
KyMc1985any version really lol00:08
KyMc1985i'd put windows 95 on it if macs could do windows :P00:08
KyMc1985as long as i can get a browser thats better than IE5.01 for mac00:08
charlie-tcahttp://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/releases/00:09
KyMc1985thx00:09
charlie-tca804 and up started using ports. Older versions have mac with the others00:09
KyMc1985ahh i see.00:10
charlie-tcaKeeping in mind, 6.06 and 7.10 are end of support in April00:10
charlie-tcahttp://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/ports/releases/ is where the ports are00:11
KyMc1985meh, i dont care about the support, if it stops working in a week ill format it :D00:11
charlie-tcaShould be good then.00:12
KyMc1985one other question. if for some reason i need to go back to OS9, can I do the same ol' hold the C key and boot from CD?00:12
charlie-tcaNow that I don't know. I don't run a mac00:12
KyMc1985I know to boot from CDs in a mac its just hold the C key and it boots from CD.00:13
charlie-tcaShould work then00:13
KyMc1985ok, so hopefully nothing will happen to the bios (and if so, who cares, i can swap the chip for the one in my other mac) :D00:13
charlie-tcaXubuntu doesn't mess with the bios00:14
xubuserHello People.00:50
xubuserhow do I turn on DRI for X?00:51
xubuserglxinfo says "direct rendering: yes".00:51
xubuserHello People.01:14
xubuseranyone here?01:14
genii~6401:15
xubuserok, does XFCE compositor use DRI?01:20
xubuserand do I need to do something to get XFCE to use DRI?01:20
AquinaHy! A general question about "sysv-rc-conf". It's more or less for usage with Red Hat systems but also widely used on Debian/Ubuntu. What do you think about it (also in comparison with BUM and the default XFCE service control)?02:10
hugo99hello02:20
charlie-tcaAquina: I think I never heard of it02:20
charlie-tcahugo99: Hello02:20
hugo99charlie-tca: hello02:20
hugo99charlie-tca: i have problems with thunar i dont understand it02:21
hugo99charlie-tca: why i cant copy thing to the desktop?02:21
charlie-tcaCopy from where ?02:22
hugo99from documentes or anywhere02:23
hugo99why i cant copy things to the desktop02:23
hugo99i need to copy a tar file to the desktop02:23
charlie-tcaYou can, if you do it inside Thunar. Just copy to Desktop in Thunar02:23
hugo99because i only know one way to open a tar02:24
hugo99and that is copy to desktiop then cd desktop02:24
charlie-tcaSome of the versions do have copy to Desktop outside Thunar broken02:24
hugo99and then tar -zxvf02:24
hugo99thas the only way i know02:24
charlie-tcaUnless the permissions are wrong, I do it all the time in Thunar and using cp in a terminal02:24
hugo99i see02:25
zoredachecd is the 'change directory command. you can cd to whatver path you want 'cd ~' = home directory 'cd ~/Documents'02:25
hugo99ah ok02:27
hugo99i understand02:27
hugo99zoredache: after i do that just a > appears02:29
hugo99it doesnt look like im inside the home directory02:30
zoredachewhat exactly did you type?02:30
hugo99cd ~' = home directory02:30
zoredacheyou don't want the quotes...02:30
hugo99ah ok02:30
zoredacheshould be - cd ~02:30

hugo99or just cd02:31
zoredachecd ~02:31
zoredachethat switches to your home directory02:32
zoredachehugo99: here is a good page to read http://www.linuxcommand.org/lts0020.php02:32

KysitoCan someone help me with an installation?03:05
MoodKysito: just ask your question and someone may help you03:06
KysitoWell, I'm trying to install Xubuntu on a NEC Versa 4050C. Pretty old computer.03:06
KysitoI burned a boot disk, and when it comes up with the spec list during the normal boot process, it doesn't start installing.03:07
KysitoIt just says LI under the spec list.03:07
zoredache'spec list'?03:07
KysitoIt lists the amounts and different types of ram and stuff.03:08
KysitoAnd the hard drives, Processor, BIOS...03:08
zoredacheyou burned the disk as an iso right?03:08
KysitoA what?03:08
KysitoI just clicked on the thing I downloaded and burned it.03:09
KysitoBy the way, the Bios date on this thing is 3/3/96, if that means I can't use Xubuntu03:09
zoredachewhen you look at the cd you created in windows what is on the disk?03:09
zoredacheis there several files/diretories, or a single file?03:09
KysitoHm.03:09
KysitoThe laptop has no operating system of its own.03:09
KysitoAs of yet.03:10
KysitoI'll check on my comp.03:10
KysitoLots of folders.03:11
KysitoAccording to my PC.03:11
zoredacheare you sure your laptop is setup to allow booting to the CD in the bios03:12
zoredachebtw, how much ram does that system have?03:13
KysitoPretty sure.03:13
KysitoIt has 640 system ram, 39936 extended ram, 384 Shadow Ram, and 256 Cache Ram.03:14
KysitoAll KBs.03:14
KysitoI got this thing second hand.03:14
zoredacheright... you aren't going to be able to run xubuntu on that03:14
MoodKysito: what do you want to do w/ your computer, assuming you can get linux on it?03:15
KysitoTest Editing, maybe read some webcomics.03:15
zoredacheyou need 192MB to install with livecd, or 64MB with the alternate cd03:15
KysitoI have a PCI lan card.03:15
Kysito*text editing03:15
Moodthis guy installed redhat 4.0 on a NEC Versan 405H -- http://www.freelabs.com/~whitis/linux/versa/03:16
KysitoI had red hat 7 on it.03:16
zoredacheRedhat 4.0, is the version of redhat from 199503:16
KysitoBut it wouldn't work except in text.03:16
Moodbut honestly, it seems like a waste of time -- you aren't going to be able to do any graphics work, even getting a GUI desktop03:16
KysitoThanks for your help, though, guys.03:17
Moodgood luck with it, if you proceed03:17
KysitoIt'd just be nice to have even a basic desktop.03:17
Moodbut it seems like a lot of hardship for not that much payoff :-(03:17
zoredachenot sure why you aren't at least seeing the boot loader though03:17
KysitoIt'd be a big payoff, as this is the only laptop I'm likely to recieve.03:18
Moodyou may want to try ratpoison03:18
KysitoWait.03:18
KysitoHang on a sec.03:18
KysitoThere's something else.03:18
Moodmaybe damnsmalllinux.org03:19
KysitoTo get Red Hat to work, I have to open the settings accessible while it's booting, and close them again.03:19
KysitoThat gets it to boot red hat.03:19
Moodhave you tried DSL?03:19
KysitoDSL?03:19
KysitoThis is my first real linux experience.03:19
KysitoI have DSL internet.03:19
zoredachehttp://damnsmalllinux.org/03:19
KysitoNot yet.03:20
KysitoHow do I go about downloading it? I get a weird web page that says Index of /pub/linux/distributions/damnsmall.03:22
Darth_TuxKysito, dsl?03:23
KysitoYeah.03:23
KysitoI'm trying it.03:23
Darth_Tuxftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.4.10-syslinux.iso03:23
KysitoTrying to download it.03:23
KysitoThanks!03:24
MoodDarth_Tux: know if it comes w/ x manager?03:24
Darth_Tuxnp, if that isnt good you can try    ftp://ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/distributions/damnsmall/current/dsl-4.4.10.iso03:24
Darth_Tuxit comes with fluxbox03:25
Moodah, ok. so Kysito - you'll at least have a graphics environment to play around in03:25
KysitoThat's what I want, really.03:25
Darth_Tuxfluxbox is nice03:25
Darth_Tuxdid fluxubuntu go belly up?03:26
MoodKysito: you'll still need at least 50 MB of space for the install alone03:26
MoodDarth_Tux: "We Are Still Alive And Strong!" heh03:26
KysitoI have an 810 meg hard drive.03:27
KysitoNo problem.03:27
KysitoOn the laptop, that is.03:27
Darth_TuxKysito, how much ram?03:27
zoredachesounded like 32mb03:28
Darth_Tuxit might be ok03:28
KysitoIt's a strange old laptop.03:29
KysitoBut I like it.03:29
zoredacheI suspect I would be out dumpster-diving, or checking craigslist.  I bet you could find something newer pretty easy03:30
KysitoI got it from a friend.03:30
KysitoAnd there's something cool about it.03:30
KysitoLike my dad's Atari.03:30
Moodzoredache: :-) Kystio- you can go to #damnsmalllinux if you want more help. but it's a small group -- 14 online currently03:30
KysitoDSL is working.03:30
KysitoThanks, guys.03:31
KysitoYou've helped a lot.03:31
Darth_TuxMood, have you used the KDE4 in ubuntu yet?03:31
MoodDarth_Tux: not yet. you?03:32
Darth_Tuxnot me, i am not a fan, though i am curious03:39
MoodDarth_Tux: looks like it's trying to emulate Vista somewhat03:41
Darth_Tuxwhich is reason enough to avoid it03:42
terminalvertical panel + system tray = </303:45

Darth_Tuxlater gentlemen, have a good night03:52
G-BluntedHow do i see what output device to use for sound?03:57

G-BluntedAnyone tried mirc + wine?04:24
Aquinayes04:27
AquinaIt works basically but I haven't tested all the functions yet.04:27
AquinaYou can run mIRC also without relying on registry entries.04:27

Sw3RvEwell someone helped me install it. now i cant locate it to use it.05:55
Myrttiok, lets go back few steps05:55
Myrttiwhat was your original problem?05:55
Sw3RvEI wanted Wi-Fi radar so i could have a GUI wifi app. So someone in ubuntu helped me install it. now, i cant find it on my menu anywhere and its still not in Add/Remove. However, when i used Synaptic it is in there and it has the green box checked.05:56
Myrttiok... didn't you have a GUI wifi app with the little NetworkManager applet?05:57
MyrttiI'm trying to find that wifi-radar btw at the same time05:58
Sw3RvEif your talking about the little networking icon at the top by the clock... that thing is worthless. im not going to know every access points SSID.05:58
Sw3RvEXubuntu doesnt have a GUI wifi application that i have seen.05:59
MyrttiI have to confess I haven't used Wifi Radar myself since spring of 2006 :-P06:00
Myrttibut never mind that, we'll get you done06:00
Sw3RvEi found it.06:01
Sw3RvEits in the file directory in applications.06:02

Myrttiopen it up in a text editor, and search for a line with Exec on it.06:06
Myrttigksudo mousepad /usr/share/applications/<filename>06:07
Sw3RvEnone of the files in applications end in anything06:07
Sw3RvEthey just have the names06:07

Sw3RvEhaha said it twice...06:54
rebecca_Hey, just wondering if xubuntu 8.10 will install on a pc with 128MB ram if i install directly from the CD on boot (rather than loading running the livecd)07:34
zoredacheyou can get it running somewhat... it won't be pleasant07:35
zoredache!lowmem07:35
ubottuFor installing on low memory systems, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/LowMemorySystems.  See also https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SystemRequirements.07:35
zoredacheparticularly if you try to run applications that want lots of memory (firefox, openoffice, mozilla, ....)07:35
rebecca_zoredache: sweet, i didn't realise i could do something similar to a debian netinst with ubuntu.07:38
rebecca_zoredache: i'll be upping the ram to 512MB but i have to wait for that to be delivered, hehe07:38
zoredacheah, good.  Installing via the 'alternate cd' is want you'll need to do.  192mb is required for the xubuntu livecd07:39
rebecca_zoredache: oh, and while im here.. do you know if has anyone put together guides for tweaking [x]ubuntu to run off CF-ide drives?07:41
zoredachethere are a couple articles on the wiki about running of usb-flash,  I suspect the issues would be pretty much the same07:43
zoredache!usb07:43
ubottuFor information about installing Ubuntu from USB flash drives, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/FromUSBStick - For a persistent live USB install, see: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LiveUsbPendrivePersistent07:43
rebecca_zoredache: thanks, ill take a look. not quite what im after but might have some useful bits07:44
zoredachewhen it comes to running off flash, primarily what you want to do is disable your swap, and setup tmpfs so things /tmp is working from a ramdisk07:45
zoredacheat least with some types of flash memory there is a fairly small number of read-write cycles that a block of memory can go through before it becomes damaged and unusable07:46
rebecca_zoredache: yeah, i have played with flash installs before and know changes to swap, ramdisk, hdparm and mounting options can make the drive last much longer :) was mainly hoping someone had made the tweaking process easier hehe07:48
jxandercould i replace thunar with nautilus --no-desktop but use the xfce desktop? i mean, open folders from xfce desktop in nautilus by default?09:06
R1cochetyou mean use nautilus as your file browser while still using xfce as desktop manager?09:09
nikolamhah hello :)10:36
nikolamI think that any intensive disk usage halt all application enough to be painfull10:36
nikolamdoes process priority corresponds to disk usage priority?10:37
nikolame.g. low cpu usage but apps not responsive when any app is using disk too much10:37
nikolamalso, am i crazy or getting partition full to 91% slows things down considerably? :)10:39
nikolamext310:39
Nyadhello, I am sitting in the ubuntu live CD and want to install ubuntu into an LVM that I created with my existing fedora installation10:42
Nyadbut when I click install the partition setup doesn't see the LVM and it says that it is unused space10:43
Nyadhow do I get xubuntu installer to see the LVM from fedora and allow me to install in the space that I have reserved it for10:44
nikolamNyad? is that partition from fedora blank?10:54
nikolamseparate blank partition, not used by fedora?10:54
Nyadyes10:54
nikolamI suggest you make backup of your fedora /boot and /boot/grub/menu.lst10:54
Nyadim overwriting MBR with ubuntu grub10:55
Nyadno need to save it10:55
nikolamyou can later copy/paste things to boot fedora, if fedora is not recognized during install. but i think it will10:55
Nyadand /boot is in a separate partition10:55
nikolamThat is right, that is why you need to backup all in fedora`s /boot10:56
nikolamafter installing ubuntu you can figure out to get back fedora kernel and menu.lst options etc10:56
Nyadok10:56
Nyadthat's done10:56
nikolambecause on previous versions when i was installing on separate /boot it was needed to format that separate /boot10:56
nikolamWell, if it is saying there is no partition, make it with live cd10:57
nikolampersonally i always use textual alternat einstall etc.10:57
NyadI have one LVM made by fedora which is all the remaining space, i have reserved 20 GB in a LVM partition for ubuntu, I have no more space10:58
Nyadthat space is sitting inside my LVM10:58
Nyadand ubuntu can't see it10:58
Nyadit tells me the partition /dev/sda3 is unknown10:59
Nyadfor the filesystem10:59
Nyadi mean for10:59
Nyadthe amount of space used10:59
nikolamI personally dont use lvm but regular partitions in raid11:00
nikolamif space is unused like it is saying, make new partition right?11:00
nikolami think sda3 is physical partition11:01
nikolammatbe lvm paririon have other designations or something?11:01
Nyadit is, yet its the LVM which has a gentoo/fedora and ubuntu and home logical partition inside it11:01
Nyad/dev/sda3             318       19452   153701887+  8e  Linux LVM11:02
Nyadthats what fdisk calls it11:02
nikolamso, GUI install of xubuntu doesn`t see it, but fdisk can see it? hmm11:05
nikolamWhat xubuntu version is that? 8.04 or 8.10?11:05
Nyad8.1011:07
Nyadunless from withing the liveCD i have a way of invoking the textual install11:08
Nyadthat may help me more since it should have more options11:09
nikolamyes, i always use alternate cd and textual menu install11:11
Nyadya but the liveCD should permit me to do the same somehow?11:11
nikolamyes, mostly the same.11:12
nikolamdo df -h to see what partitions are mounted on live now..11:12
nikolampastebin.ubuntu.org11:12
Nyadk11:13
Nyadhttp://pastebin.ubuntu.com/119633/11:14
NyadI installed lvm2 and now the installer picks up my LVMs11:35
Nyadso all is well11:35
Nyadty for the help11:35
nikolamoh, nice :)11:41
nikolamI learned something today, also :)11:41
homebrewciderhey there, I'm running Xubuntu, I have a Canon MP610 printer/scanner, printer working okay, scanner not being recognized, sane is installed, don't know what to do next11:42

zoredachewell for example my irc client flashes whenever someone sends me message.  The flash is enough for me to notice and turn my head and read what was said17:53
Sw3RvEoh, mine never beeped for that. it only beeped whenever i hit backspace and there was nothing to delete and when i shutdown or restart it would beep.17:54

ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: shortcut keys are massively configurable21:45
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: low ram footprint21:46
knomecharlie-tca, isn't nano *.desktop a good enough menu editor?21:47
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: the menu is simply the case of editing a conf file and its done21:47
Myrttiknome: you must be joking ;-)21:47
charlie-tcaknome: Personnally, I prefer gedit *.desktop21:47
ActionParsnipi prefer leafpad ;)21:47

charlie-tcaYeah, I grant you the menu edit thing is not so easy here21:48
knomeMyrtti, nope, not really :)21:48
knomeMyrtti, i get everything done what i need :)21:48
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: its not something i use much as i use tilda / yakuake style stuff21:48
knomecharlie-tca, nah, mousepad should be preferred over gedit21:49
charlie-tcalow ram, we got that. Shortcuts, we got that. Menu editing, we don't got that...21:49

ActionParsnip!info mousepad21:49
zoredacheis it really even save to be editing things in /usr/share/applications Files stored in there are not conffiles.  When/if the package is updated you will loose your modifications21:49

ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: its 200kb smaller == 75% size of mousepad21:51
charlie-tcarun kubuntu and then you want smaller!21:51
ActionParsnipknome: i have a fine system, i just like free ram21:52
charlie-tcaqt is nothing if not memory intensive21:52
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: i use ktorrent and amarok for its xul remote control which I can control with my G1 phone :)21:52

charlie-tcaI haven't even got enough ram to get kubuntu to load21:53
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: i just like fast and snappy and dont care for prettys21:53
charlie-tcaI started with gnome, 3+ years ago; crashed kubuntu and never tried it again21:54
knomei have 4G ram, but it's too little for xubuntu ;<21:54
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: i used mandrake 6 way back when and like kde, its just stuck, then i looked at alternatives21:54
knomecharlie-tca, i have the same history. gnome > kde (2 days) > xfce21:55
charlie-tcaYeah, OS2 to Ubuntu to Xubuntu21:55
charlie-tcaWell, with a stop to use DOS along the way21:56
ActionParsnipdos -> win3.1, win95, 98, 2000, mandrake, gentoo, gentoo+mandrake, gentoo+mandrake+kubuntu, gentoo+kubuntu21:57
charlie-tcaXubuntu will give you more free ram than kubuntu will, ActionParsnip21:58
knomecharlie-tca, i tried openbox for maybe a week21:58
charlie-tcaHowever, once you get used to something, change is difficult, huh?21:58
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: i have 2Gb but i like slim and slick, ram isnt a problem. I only chat and browse but i want it fast21:58
charlie-tcaI tried win3.121:58
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: not really Its still ubuntu and i mainly use command line except web browsing with opera21:59
charlie-tcaknome: you don't like openbox?21:59
charlie-tcaI tried several flavors of Linux, this one just worked for me.22:00
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: oh gentoo is still my man, ubuntu is nice if i fancy an easy life22:01
ActionParsnipcharlie-tca: my fileserver and one of my routers runs it nicely22:01
charlie-tcawell, variety is good too22:02

ActionParsnipright well im off to play some frets on fire22:02

knomecharlie-tca, i like it. but i still decided to stay on xfce.22:05
knomecharlie-tca, however, i try not to get used to anything.22:06
knomecharlie-tca, i think i've made a good process in letting things go and trying new things :)22:06
charlie-tcaI see. I guess I'm old now and prefer less change22:06
charlie-tcaThat's why I just do the testing!22:06

knomeR1cochet, i'm also thinking of printing xubuntu stickers.23:24
Sw3RvEare there any 64-bit apps on the 64-bit version?23:24
R1cochetSw3RvE: i was on 64 and switched to 32 because i heard theres no performance gain on 6423:25
Sw3RvEthen why switch back to 32-bit if its the same?23:25
charlie-tca64-bit can use memory greater than 3.2 MB23:26
charlie-tcano, 3.2GB23:26
charlie-tca32 bit is limited to 3.2GB ram23:26
Sw3RvEdoes that include memory swap or actual RAM?23:26
charlie-tcaactual ram23:26
mizzy^^anyone here used freenx?23:26

Sw3RvEmy laptop only has 1.8 GB RAM23:27
knomeR1cochet, sure. i think i'll post something to the mailing lists once i get this done.23:27
charlie-tcaNot for nothing, Sw3RvE. It will still take advantage of 64-bit software.23:27
Sw3RvEsuch as?23:28
charlie-tcaDepending on what you are doing, it can be faster23:28
R1cochetok ill sign up for mailer after i get back from work23:28
Sw3RvEi have noticed...23:28
charlie-tcaDatabases, spreadsheets23:28
Sw3RvEwhen i moved a movie to my external hdd23:28
Myrttidoes 32-bit use all the cores of multiple core cpu's?23:28
Sw3RvEit only took 30 seconds23:28
Sw3RvEcompared to 45+ seconds on windows xp 32-bit23:28
charlie-tcaMyrtti: I don't know23:28
charlie-tcaThat too, Sw3RvE23:28
R1cochetMyrtti: i have a dual core and both get used23:28
Sw3RvEMyrtti: when i had 32-bit ubuntu it used both cores on this laptop.23:29
charlie-tcaMine is only single core23:29
R1cochetknome: if u get around to doing shirts i think long sleaves would be a nice addition23:30
Sw3RvEyou know how firefox has that check box that says warn me if i have too many tabs open... how come it NEVER warns me? lol23:31
Sw3RvEit just crashes... weather im using linux or XP23:31
R1cochetgtg23:31

Myrtti!xmms23:35
ubottuxmms is no longer being developed, see http://bugs.debian.org/461309 for more details.  Consider using audacious, bmpx, or xmms2 instead.23:35
Sw3RvEif anyone could walk me through playing shoutcast through it then i might try audacious on here.23:35
mizzy^^does anyone here use FreeNX?23:35
mizzy^^anyone? :P23:36

charlie-tcaat least at the present time.23:40
Sw3RvEooh its eject. i clicked that last night and the stupid thing re-mounted. so i didnt think that was it.23:40
MyrttiSw3RvE: if you can't unmount it, then you can atleast type "gksudo sync" on the run prompt23:41
Myrttibefore yanking it off23:41
Sw3RvEits called eject instead of unmount isnt it?23:41
