[19:37] frozenfoxx: with -phigh you're asked some questions, -pcritical should ask none and give a basic file [19:37] frozenfoxx: you'll probably need to remove all ati drivers and reinstall just one of them [19:38] frozenfoxx: fglrx that is === solid_li` is now known as solid_liq [19:38] frozenfoxx: so my recommendation would be - purge fglrx (if installed manually I think you have to use their installed to uninstall) and also apt-get remove any ubuntu fglrx packages. you may want to reinstall the dri packages to be sure that's in a consistent state - then get the fglrx 9.2 installer and run with -buildpkg Ubuntu/Intrepid (assuming that's your version) [19:39] frozenfoxx: that'll give you a load of .debs which you can install -also run aticonfig to have the xorg.conf sorted out for fglrx [19:39] nigeis, you are right, people is stupid and when they ask about a specific information to do something is because the underlaying problem is another and easier to fix [19:39] frozenfoxx: depending on your chipset (r500 etc) the OSS driver might even support full accel now [19:39] frozenfoxx: and if possible, install without catalyst - just the driver [19:40] NigelS: Gotcha. [23:14] yeah, I've frequently had wine outperform windows - when you consider all the clutter that linux strips out from the overal OS that's not too surprising [23:14] the problem is the implementation of the 3d drivers - for both nvidia and ati the performancec is worse than the windows driver [23:15] with the OSS drivers...will be intersting to see what happens [23:20] hi [23:20] hi [23:20] :) [23:20] does anybody know the package name which the system monitor hdd plasmoid belongs to? [23:24] apt-cache search plasmoid- [23:25] Hi all [23:25] I am new with ubuntu [23:26] chris-rc1: plasmoid-simplemonitor ? [23:26] and I really like it,but I can't solve my sound problem.I don't have any sound with amsn and skype and with the sound recording [23:28] any help will be appreciated [23:28] :) [23:29] mefisto__: did that and still don't know where it belongs [23:29] dragomir: do you have any sound at all? [23:29] yes [23:29] the players [23:29] what system? [23:29] hm [23:30] thats good question [23:30] :) [23:30] ubuntu or kubuntu and which version [23:30] ok [23:30] ubuntu [23:30] ultra [23:30] does amsn and skype use oss sound? [23:30] i think skype uses alsa [23:31] sorry guys [23:31] I really don't know all this [23:31] as I said I like the sistem [23:31] but is very different than vista [23:31] they are way behind the win version, but not that far that they would use sth like oss [23:34] dragomir: look in skype options, sound devices [23:34] it might be as simple as the mic being muted... [23:34] yes mefisto [23:34] I did it [23:34] which i suspect is the default [23:34] dragomir: well, first of all, you might be better off in #ubuntu (sorry, standard answer) [23:34] dragomir: do you have more than 1 soundcard in the menus for sound in/sound out? [23:34] i just did a fresh install of kubuntu 8.10 then upgraded to kde 4.2 and now the task bar at the bottom of the screen is only half length [23:34] but I don't have sound on the sound recorder aswell [23:35] does anyone know how i can make it bigger [23:35] this is because the mic is off, NigelS is right [23:35] oobe: you can drag the taskbar to any length you desire if you click on the plasmoid icon [23:35] yes [23:36] ah i see thanks [23:36] but I can't turn it on [23:36] in the mixer? [23:36] yeap [23:36] oobe: there is also maximize, in "more settings" [23:36] why not? [23:36] if you click on the speaker icon dragomir there's a button labelled mixer - when that opens you should see symbols for the microphone etc - are the mute options unticked? [23:36] I am thinking [23:36] I am with sonyvaio [23:36] (the speaker icon is in the taskbar btw) [23:37] may be is some conflict with the drivers [23:37] yes nigel [23:37] :) [23:38] and you have increased the volume? [23:38] yes [23:38] the only sound I have is actually from the players [23:39] well, if you have sound that means there is no conflict with the drivers [23:40] it strange that with amsn I can't listen even the winks [23:40] and can't play it [23:40] i don't know about gonme, but in kde you do have to choose the input source [23:41] gnome, obviously [23:42] hi!! i have a little language problem here on KDE. I installed two languages: German and Spanish, so that both users could log into a kde in his/her native tongue... [23:42] but somehow, it mixes them up a little [23:42] not much but yes [23:43] I get on German login mostly German Texts but for expample the delay hiere in Konversation which is in German, is in Spanish [23:43] or pop up messages: they are in German. But the OK and CANCEL buttons are in Spanish [23:43] ??? [23:46] AndySpain: so you have german installed in one user, spanish in the other? or german and spanish in both? [23:46] both in both [23:46] to choose language on login screen [23:47] ok [23:47] AndySpain: try to set the languages in systemsettings again. maybe it helps... [23:47] at least that's what i thought it would be like [23:47] worked like this on gnomen ubuntu before [23:48] chris-rc1 deinstall language there and then install it again? [23:49] language is per-user, isn't it? or am I wrong about that? I only use one language [23:50] just see whether they are set correctly there. try choosing another and then the first one again and click apply. i don't know, maybe it helps... [23:50] work space - the transparent thing on desktop is called Desktop Folder (English) . K-Menu is German, exept: the hibernate entry, this one's Spanish [23:50] mefisto__: otherwise it doesn't really make sense... [23:51] Land/Region: Germany Languages (in that order): German, Spanish, English [23:52] the buttons there are 50% German 50% spanish [23:52] what if you delete the other entries? [23:54] well, I now changed order and restored order and clicked make German system language and then "Apply" - lets see if after restart it works [23:54] if not, I'll might consider deleting one. But actually I like changing languages myself as well [23:54] well thank you guys for your help [23:54] am in spain and if taling with spaniards, it's convenient to have spanish system [23:54] :) [23:54] thank you [23:55] dragomir: did you get skype sound working? [23:56] just wanted to ask :-) [23:56] ope [23:56] nope [23:56] :) [23:56] othing [23:56] nothing [23:57] no sound pn the sound recorder [23:57] dragomir: and just one soundcard? it's a laptop, right? [23:57] yes [23:57] chris-rc1 it's not really a big problem. i was just curious why it occurs. Had gnome setup with two languages, both ones being pure [23:57] AndySpain: it's pretty annoying though [23:58] that's why I'm here... ;-) But it's only about 5 % of all entries that are either in Span or engl === solid_li` is now known as solid_liq [23:58] . === carlos is now known as Alex_X [23:58] anyway, thank you chris-rc1 [23:59] am leaving now. Have a nice evening all!
