RadicalRHm, well, I'll just state my trouble then.04:25
RadicalRI have managed to break Xubuntu04:25
RadicalRI was trying to install the official NVidia drivers04:26
RadicalRand somehow it broke the xorg configuration file.04:26
RadicalRI attempted to restore to the previous version04:26
RadicalRhowever, that failed to work as well.04:26
RadicalRand also, for some reason, my wireless refuses to connect to the router04:28
RadicalReven after installing the correct driver and "sudo modprobe ndiswrapper"04:28
RadicalRThe device works, but it just sits there.04:28
joshjtlhi04:40
joshjtlis there a border around the xfce panel? there seems to be a lot of space between the edge of the panel and icons... I know scaling the panel can help this a bit, but not as much as I would like.04:40

nikolamHi09:53
nikolamMy system just went crazy for a couple of minutes09:53
nikolamit was doing msome mdraid1 thing in process with priority -509:53
nikolamAnd There is also some trackerd process with priority 1909:54
nikolamI figure this is due to mdraid1 was doing some servicing of raid1 partition09:54
nikolamBUT, it resulted in completely unresponsive system09:55
nikolamfor about 10 minutes or something..09:55
nikolamAlso, when ever some process is using disk intensively09:55
nikolamWhole system locks up, meaning applications are not refreshing09:56
nikolamAnd Everything is like, I have 286 or something..09:56
TheSheepsounds like some problems with that raid09:56
TheSheepanything in logs?09:56
nikolamNow it is OK, but I closed all my applications, because i thought it was their`s faults09:56
nikolamwhere to look at logs?09:57
nikolamI use software raid on 2 partitions as raid1, 2 sata disks09:57
nikolami open system log viewer09:57
TheSheepI'd start in /var/log and work from there09:57
nikolamkern.log, messages and syslog are all Full of ppp0 messages..09:58
TheSheepmy knowledge of raid is pretty much non-existent, so unless someone else here has an idea, google is a better source of information...09:59
nikolamI use that raid petty nice since install10:00
nikolammostly no issues10:00
nikolamByt all system operations like that raid sync or something10:00
nikolamand installing packages with synaptic etc10:01
nikolamgives slow and unresponsive system until operation is done10:01
nikolamLike, some operations are given high priority and user applications are not imaportant..10:01

_Pete_rehi I still have one problem with xfce10:42
_Pete_for somereason keyboard shortcuts are not going to IDEA10:42
_Pete_like ctrl-f9 = should be make project10:43
_Pete_I already removed xfce shortcuts for the same combo but still it's not working :(10:44
TheSheep_Pete_: is it a terminal application? if so, check if terminal doesn't use it10:45
_Pete_it's not10:45
_Pete_it's Java IDE10:45

_Pete_this is the app http://www.jetbrains.com/idea/features/index.html10:48

_Pete_in which file is keyboard shortcuts saved ?10:50
TheSheep_Pete_: in .themes/<shortcuts theme>/xfwm4/keythemerc10:56
TheSheep_Pete_: and another in .config/xfce4/mcs_settings/keyboard.xml10:57
_Pete_TheSheep: first one doesnt exists and in 2nd there nothing related to ctrl-f9 or like that11:09
TheSheep_Pete_: in the first one you have to fill in the name you gave you to your shortcuts theme11:15
_Pete_I consider this a bug11:16
_Pete_.. in the case it really arent defined anywhere for xfce11:17
TheSheep_Pete_: if you don't have your own keyboard theme, it uses defaults11:20
_Pete_orginally ctrl-fx was shortcuts to change desktops but I disabled those from the xfce settings11:21
_Pete_still those shortcuts are not going to the Idea application11:21
_Pete_same was with KDE, it also used those shortcuts but when you did disable them from settings they worked in the application11:22

tempuserWhat is Xclient script option for session in GDM login screen?13:04
MemfisHello everyone. Is anyone available for a quick grub question?13:16
tempuserAnyway, it seems that my Xubuntu 8.10 used some default session, which did not run xinitrc. I had to explicitly choose Xfce 4 session in GDM to have Xfce session properly launched, including screensaver daemon (to make xflock4 work).13:19
MemfisI have a PC which has been working fine for months, however since adding another HDD boot drops to busybox shell saying it cant find the master partition (odd as it just booted from it). If I exit this shell it continues to boot just fine. I'm hoping adding rootdelay to grubs menu.lst may solve this problem. Can anyone assist in adding this?13:20
FoxkehGuess what! I survived fsck! Only problem is it wouldn't load swap first boot, but otherwise it's fine!13:43
ranokI just installed xubuntu 8.10 on my new computer (64-bit)13:45
ranokand the wifi is very very very slow13:45
tempuserAnyone want to start their Xubuntu by the "Xclient script" session in GDM and try to run xflock4 thereafter?13:59
tempuserMy guess is that xflock4 does not work then (unless you have installed xlockmore or similar.)14:00
TheSheeptempuser: works for me14:11
tempuserTheSheep: Strange. How could I trace what Xclient script option does here?14:26
tempuserTheSheep: since it doesn't work for me. And since Xclient script is the default session in Xubuntu (is it?) xflock4 did not work until I changed to Xfce 4 session.14:33
TheSheepit should use xfce by default...14:34
fyskamI did just install xubuntu and since I have a s3 card and the correct driver is s3virge I want that. But when logging in, exactly when xfce has loaded completely, X craches (or something) and gdm restarts.15:00
fyskam1. Anyone who know of the problem? 2. Anyone know where I should look for errors? /var/log/*xorg* /var/log/gdm/* says *nothing*15:01
fyskam3. or just simply, anyone how know of the solution?15:01
TheSheepfyskam: ~/.xsession-errors15:03
TheSheepfyskam: or you can try starting just X with xterm, and then startxfce4 in it15:04
fyskamnah, I'm looking for a permanent solution. For now I'm on the vesa driver.15:06
fyskamthe .xsession gave some ideas. thx15:06
BesogonWhat is right way in installation xfce on UBUNTU? (gnome has installed). When I run wine (warcraft) with fullscreen Im see panels above and beneath the screen.15:12
BesogonAnd my main menu is like rubbish bin. I cant change it.15:15
fyskamBesogon, my guess: there is no right way. Ubuntu is designed to have only using window manager; gnome, kde or xfce, mixing them up, then you are on your own.15:16
fyskamBut thats my guess.15:16
TheSheepfyskam: guess again15:16
TheSheepBesogon: try toggling 'display fullscreen overlays directly' option in window manager tweaks, in the compositor tab15:17
fyskamunless u install the xubuntu-a-whole-bunch-of-stuff package. that might work :-/15:17
BesogonTheSheep, ok15:18
TheSheepBesogon: about menu, you can only add your stuff to it with the editor, it will add all the installed applications to it automatically, there is a way of removing them manually, without the editor15:19
Besogonwhen I translate what you wrote I will answer )))15:23
TheSheepBesogon: sorry15:24
BesogonNo metter15:25
TheSheepBesogon: basically, menu is created from two parts: the part you edit with the editor, and the list of installed applications15:25

aI can connect using windows just fine16:36
athey are both PPTP16:36
charlie-tcacraigbass1976: it should be xmms216:37
craigbass1976Really...  I thought all xmms died.16:37
charlie-tcaperson called a : I have no more ideas. You could try in #ubuntu, maybe?16:38
charlie-tcaor check the help wiki doc: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Gaming_VPN_Using_PPTPD16:38
aok I will16:39
athanks a lot16:39
charlie-tcano problem.16:40
craigbass1976charlie-tca, is there some gui front end I have to install as well with xmms2?16:40
charlie-tcaI don't know. I don't use it16:41
craigbass1976tray icon maybe.  What do you use?16:41
charlie-tcaSynaptic-Package-Manager has a lot of stuff listed for it, including gxmms2, a gnome gui16:42
charlie-tcaI use Listen16:42
craigbass1976xmms2 seems to be a daemon running in the background; I don't think I'll like that with with laptop also being a LAMP dev box.  To much going for this aging lappy...16:44
MemfisIf you have lamp have you considered ampache ?16:45
craigbass1976Memfis, I could, but I'm trying to keep things to a minimum as far as daemons go; only 512 memory with no room to upgrade, and this lappy is from early 2000's.16:48
Memfisampache doesn't have a daemon. If apache and mysql are running thats all it needss16:49
craigbass1976Ahhhhh.  Finally.  Louis Armstrong....16:53
craigbass1976THanks folks.16:56
rockois burnfree the same thing as burnproof?17:40

TheSheeprocko: I think you have to compute the md5 sum of the image and of the burned disk18:19
TheSheeprocko: and compare them18:19

Clark_Kenthello everyone19:02
Clark_Kentcan anyone help me with setting up screen-resolution in xubuntu 8.10?19:03
knome!resolution | Clark_Kent19:05
ubottuClark_Kent: The X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution19:05
knome!purexfce | keres19:05
ubottukeres: If you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »19:05
knomekeres, you might want to look at that also.19:06
Clark_Kenti know basics of linux - the problem is I only have one possible choice to set the resolution to ...19:06
Clark_Kenthow can i add different resolutions?19:06
knomeClark_Kent, if you need bigger, you might need to see if you have a driver that can do it.19:07
Clark_Kenti would need it different - not in widescreen format ... as some apps cut the bottom of some windows e.g. freeciv19:09
knomeinteresting. do you know wheteher your display is correctly recognised?19:10
Clark_Kentit is ... i tried to edit etc/x11/xconfig by hand ... but it ony has 'configured-device' in it ... that i guess points somwhere else as inserted by dpkg-configure19:12
Clark_Kentxf86config is no longer part of x11 packages?19:14
Clark_Kenti tried to add resolution using grendr instead of xrendr ... but it refuses to add different resolution19:24
knomeClark_Kent, i'm out of ideas. maybe you could ask #ubuntu or wait for somebody else to arrive.19:36
knomeClark_Kent, the problem most possibly is not in xubuntu/xfce :)19:37
Clark_Kentprob is the same as it ever is: the user19:38
Clark_Kentthanks anyway ... i take the dogs for a walk ... maybe fresh idea gives me fresh ideas19:38
knomeClark_Kent, really? :) did you find an another solution than "remove the user"?19:39
Clark_Kenti ment fresh air19:39
Clark_Kentdpkg-update --user19:39
knomeyeah. have a good walk.19:39

kholbyI have two problems, but probably only need to solve one.  a) My broadcom wireless card is not working [or] b) I can't get Internet connection sharing to work.22:12
zoltroni just got a new atheros wireless card. how do i enable it for use in xubuntu? it doesn't show up in iwconfig22:15
TheSheepzoltron: how about system->drivers?22:16
kholbyOn a similar note, my card shows up in drivers, has status listed as "In use," but enabled is unchecked.  When I check enabled, it asks me to restart, but I restart and get exactly the same thing.22:18
TheSheepdid you guys try googling for your card model and 'ubuntu'?22:19
TheSheepmaybe someone had similar problems22:20
kholbyMany times.  Everything I haven't tried involves commands that don't seem to work on my machine.22:20
charlie-tcaYou can also ask in #ubuntu. They have more people and may have more suggestions22:24
kholbyI think I'll try that.  Thank you.22:25
