silenii want to dual boot ubuntu so i downloaded ubuntu 8.10 into the 2 gb usb drive and started the installer.. when it came to the partition part it won't let me resize the windows xp partition. I have 15.6 gb total disk space and xp already takes up 6 GB so i thought i would let xp have 8gb and the rest would go for ubuntu. Can someone help me get through this ?19:15
silenisorry for posting in 3 lines19:15

vimpulsesileni:  [ in #ubuntu you must repeat your question every 5 min.  were you?  :) ]21:06
vimpulsesileni:  why not?21:06
silenivimpulse: for some reason i needed to run something called checkdsk21:06
vimpulsesileni:  did ubuntu not tell you that??21:07
silenivimpulse: after i did that in xp21:07
silenivimpulse: no ubuntu told me nothing i just found an article on google21:07
silenivimpulse: now i resized the partitions to make the xp partition be 8.6 GB and 7.7 gb is freed up for linux21:07
vimpulsesileni:  that is a problem with ubuntu - bad reporting.  you should complain.21:07

vimpulsesileni:  how many web browser tabs you ever have open at once?21:09
silenilike 5 max21:09
vimpulsesileni:  make it all one big / partition, plus a 512MB swap partition at the end.21:09
vimpulsesileni:  if programs crash "Out of Memory", expand the swap partition.21:10
sileniok21:10
silenibut don't need home?21:10
vimpulsesileni:  it's tough to make these decisions on such a small netbook.21:10
vimpulsesileni:  you can have a separate home partition if you want.21:10
silenivimpulse: yes i would liek that21:10
silenihow big does a root partition have to be ?21:10
vimpulsesileni:  make 5.2 gb /, then 2 gb home, then rest swap21:11
