=== ibuclaw1 is now known as ibuclaw [19:14] hey [19:14] i bought the hp mini 1000 and it came preloaded with xp [19:14] sileni: please state your whole problem on one long long line. [19:14] :) [19:15] i want to dual boot ubuntu so i downloaded ubuntu 8.10 into the 2 gb usb drive and started the installer.. when it came to the partition part it won't let me resize the windows xp partition. I have 15.6 gb total disk space and xp already takes up 6 GB so i thought i would let xp have 8gb and the rest would go for ubuntu. Can someone help me get through this ? [19:15] sorry for posting in 3 lines [19:16] sileni: it's ok. === Mamarok_ is now known as Mamarok [19:25] dang [19:25] i didnt even know i lost connection [19:25] sileni: you didn't. [19:25] sileni: ask in #ubuntu for faster response. warning: it's busy. [19:25] ok [21:06] vimpulse: hey [21:06] vimpulse: you there bro? [21:06] sileni: yep [21:06] i fininally figured out why i couldn't partition [21:06] sileni: [ in #ubuntu you must repeat your question every 5 min. were you? :) ] [21:06] sileni: why not? [21:06] vimpulse: for some reason i needed to run something called checkdsk [21:07] sileni: did ubuntu not tell you that?? [21:07] vimpulse: after i did that in xp [21:07] vimpulse: no ubuntu told me nothing i just found an article on google [21:07] vimpulse: now i resized the partitions to make the xp partition be 8.6 GB and 7.7 gb is freed up for linux [21:07] sileni: that is a problem with ubuntu - bad reporting. you should complain. [21:07] vimpulse: can you please tell me what parittions i need to make on that 7.7 [21:08] sileni: you have 2 gb ram right? [21:08] vimpulse: only one :-\ [21:08] 16 gb ssd 1 gb ram [21:08] this computer has 5 gb ram so i can run heavy apps on here [21:08] sileni: what IDE are you gonna run? [21:08] on linux [21:08] vimpulse: right now i just use g++ in terminal. i don't know about future classes yet [21:09] sileni: g++ is fine with 1GB RAM [21:09] sileni: how many web browser tabs you ever have open at once? [21:09] like 5 max [21:09] sileni: make it all one big / partition, plus a 512MB swap partition at the end. [21:10] sileni: if programs crash "Out of Memory", expand the swap partition. [21:10] ok [21:10] but don't need home? [21:10] sileni: it's tough to make these decisions on such a small netbook. [21:10] sileni: you can have a separate home partition if you want. [21:10] vimpulse: yes i would liek that [21:10] how big does a root partition have to be ? [21:11] sileni: make 5.2 gb /, then 2 gb home, then rest swap [21:11] ok [21:11] thank you so much [21:11] sileni: glad to help. [21:12] it should be ext3 right? [21:12] yeah [21:14] ok so i have 5.1 gb / ...2 gb /home and 526 mb swap ... that fills it and root and /home are both ext3 [21:14] does that sound right? [21:14] sileni: yep [21:14] sileni: stop worrying and just click "Go". [21:15] ehhe [21:16] hopefully everything will end up nice [21:16] sileni: newbie tips: [21:17] sileni: 1. never reinstall Linux. you can always fix things without reinstalling. [21:17] vimpulse: ok [21:17] sileni: 2. never download software off the web. Always use Start menu > Add/Remove which downloads and installs for you quickly and easily [21:17] sileni: 3. gaim is MSN Messenger [21:17] well i liked pidgin it takes care of everything >< [21:18] sileni: oops, i meant pidgin not gaim
