admin_masu3701do anyone know what i should do at this point?01:02
danbhfiveadmin_masu3701: well, if its just getting the packages, I think you could try just starting over01:03
admin_masu3701so just cancel it and restart? cause it not moving no more01:04
danbhfiveyeah, and if it happens again, file a bug report01:05
admin_masu3701ok01:05
admin_masu3701so nothing was installed at this point right?01:06
danbhfiveif you say so.  I'm not totally sure01:07

SeveredCrossDoes anyone happen to know if Ubiquity is broken on recent dailies?02:02
SeveredCrossIt gets stuck after choosing the keyboard layout.02:03
milos_Infecto: i guess this option is disabled because there were some problems.02:03

SeveredCrossOh, never mind, partitioner just took ages to start.02:06
milos__can somebody ping me? I need to test notifications.02:18
SeveredCrossmilos__: Ping.02:18
milos__SeveredCross: thnx02:19
SeveredCrossNo problem.02:19
SeveredCrossNow if only I could get notify-osd to notify me when I'm pinged in irssi in my terminal.02:19
SeveredCrossUnfortunately that would require notify-osd to somehow talk to a remote irssi. -_-'02:20
daftykins^_^02:21
SeveredCrossI suppose it might be doable with some Perl magic and a local daemon running that knew how to speak to notify-osd...That would mean learning how to work with libnotify though.02:23
daftykinsor you could code some kind of irssi add-on that automatically notified you by some other means that someone had highlighted you02:26
crdlbthat's been done02:27
crdlbhaven't tried it, but: http://hohwie.com/blog/?p=8=102:27
SeveredCrossOh, wow.02:31
SeveredCrossThat's...perfet.02:31
SeveredCrossThough the scripts are a bit jumbled. I'll make it work.02:37
victory747I'm wondering about the deprecated md5 and sha modules in python.  It keeps warning that we should use hashlib instead.  This is really annoying as these are not my scripts that are causing this.02:42
victory747And if these modules still work in python 2.6, why do we need to be told that they are deprecated every time they are used?02:43
crdlbvictory747: because they don't in 3.002:43
victory747but there is a LOT that is deprecated in 3.002:43
victory747every script will need to be tested in 3.0, so why tell us about this one module?02:44
crdlbindeed, but most of it can be fixed by the 2to3.py script02:44
victory747still, end users should not be seeing these warnings in ubuntu packages (like bzr-svn in my case)02:44
crdlbjaunty hasn't been released02:45
crdlbI expect they'll all be fixed; it's not exactly difficult to convert them02:45
victory747right, so that's why I'm here02:45
crdlbyou can file a bug if it hasn't already been done02:45
daftykinspython is dropping SHA1 ?02:45
victory747should I file bug reports against each one?02:45

DanaGI have the 15" one, with ATI (by choice, instead of NV).05:21
daftykinsyou actually actively chose ATI? O_O05:27
daftykinsmind you i suppose nvidia chips in laptops have been dying a lot lately05:27
daftykinsbit sketchy05:27
daftykinsi have had two friends with bad nvidia graphics in their laptops05:28
daftykinsvery strange symptoms occur05:28
* crdlb would probably choose intel over either05:28
crdlbprobably an R500 for a desktop though05:28
daftykinsi have a sony ultra portable laptop, compiz on intrepid runs nicely on the intel GMA950 gfx it has05:28
DanaGATI chip is also lower power, when in Windows -- gives longer battery life.05:30
DanaGChoice was essentially HD3650 versus 8600-series.05:31
daftykinsah05:31
daftykinstbh if you want battery you should use an ultra-portable :D05:31
daftykinsthough sadly my sony is best off in Windows for good battery05:31
DanaGnot quite right... there's a bell curve.05:31
daftykins6-7hrs vs. 4hrs in ubuntu05:31
DanaGAt least with this EliteBook line, the 14" one has a higher max time, given optimum specs, than the 12 or the 15.05:32
DanaGOne thing bugs me in Windows: it can never seem to leave the friggin' hard drive alone!05:33
DanaGI have never, ever, ever seen a Windows box let the main system drive spin down.  Ever.05:33
DanaGI do like having a hardware mute, too.05:36
daftykinsoh i definitely have05:42
daftykinsdoesn't last long though :D05:42
daftykinsdrive power saving like that is bad though, induces extra wear on them05:42
DanaGNot if you tweak it correctly.05:43
DanaGI have my ext4 set to data=journal, with a 15-minute commit time.05:44
daftykinsno, it's a hardware thing05:44
daftykinsdrives can only survive x number of spin ups/down in their lifetime05:44
DanaGIt's a moot point when the gpu is sucking so much power, though.05:44

maccam-sagerhave the rc2 sysv init scripts been rewritten as upstart scripts yet?07:28
maccam-sageri know that at least through hardy, upstart has been the default init process, but it has been using sysv scripts through a compatibility layer07:30
urkkiWhen ATI-drivers for my HD Radeon 3450 are compatible?07:33
maccam-sagerurkki: you mean the ATI closed source Catalyst Driver? they have to release a new version that is compatible with Xserver 1.6. they don't have a timeline on that. it won't happen until at least april though, because ATI has confirmed that there will be no support for it in this month's 9.3 release07:40
urkkimaccam-sager: Ok, thanks. Thats a bummer from ATI07:42
SeveredCrossI thought the RadeonHD driver was supposed to have enough support to get by on for the HD cards.07:42
maccam-sagerurkki: watch phoronix.com, you'll hear the news there when it happens07:42

maccam-sagerwhy does it look like upstart development for ubuntu has stalled? https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/upstart09:48
maccam-sagerthe last update was in october, the version in the repository (0.3) is 5 months old, and since then a new version (0.5) was released09:48
theholyduckmaccam-sager, because ubuntu has this nasty tendency of being outdated. and nobody uses upstart anyway :P10:01
maccam-sagertheholyduck: upstart is the default actually10:01
maccam-sager(in ubuntu)10:02
theholyduckwell nobody SANE uses upstart10:02
theholyduckin other news10:02
theholyduckaptsh is awesome10:02
theholyduckits the greatest apt frontend ever10:03
theholyduckand i found it by accident10:03
maccam-sagertheholyduck: it's been the default in Ubuntu since 6.10 ;-)10:05
theholyduckubuntu isnt created by sane people though10:05
maccam-sagersysv needs to be replaced sooner rather than later, so...10:06
theholyduckxorg needs to be replaced aswell10:07
theholyduckbut i dont see ubuntu rushing to fixing that10:07
maccam-sagertheholyduck: why do you think xorg needs replacing?10:08
theholyduckmaccam-sager, x11 is a OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLD standard10:10
theholyduckit wasnt intended to do most of the things i has to do now10:10
maccam-sager(xorg is also much larger and has more dependencies than init)10:10
theholyduckand has been extended with a buttload of hacks10:11
theholyduckand workardounds10:11
theholyduckto make it do direct rendering and hardware accelration10:11
theholyduckits client server model is broken10:11
theholyduckdue to how desktops works these days10:11
theholyduckand gtk and qt both have to implement hacks to make stuff look good on xorg10:11
theholyduckmaccam-sager, im willing to bet that atleast half the code in xorg currently is redundant or useless10:12
theholyduckwe need a non compitable step forward10:12
maccam-sagerwell there's work starting on wayland10:12
theholyduckthey want to retain some compitability10:13
theholyduckand you end up with the problem microsoft has10:13
crdlbX does not need to be replaced10:13
theholyduckmaintaining security while at the SAME TIME providing compitability with your badly designed previous standards10:13
maccam-sageri would say that X's main problem was that development slowed way down10:14
maccam-sagerbut it seems to be picking up again10:14
theholyduckmaccam-sager, its a bloated broken piece of shit that keeps getting worse for every release10:14
crdlbX will soon be able to run as user, so security won't be nearly as much of an issue10:14
theholyduckmaccam-sager, we need to get rid of it as quickly as possible10:14
theholyduckall the developers i know who have to interface directly with X10:15
theholyduckkeeps telling me how horrible it is10:15
crdlband how will replacing it be magically better?10:15
crdlbwho's going to port all the thousands and thousands of apps?10:16
theholyduckcrdlb, if you port gtk and qt, most of the work would allready be done :pø10:16
theholyduckif you REALLY must. implement a slow x11 layer10:16
crdlbexcept for the whole testing part10:16
crdlbfixing Xlib seems more rational ...10:17
theholyduckcrdlb, but thats impossible :P10:17
crdlbcf. XCB10:17
theholyduckif you cant break the standard you cant fix it10:17
theholyduckofcourse if xorg decided to stick it to the man and redesign how xorg worked on the backend10:17
theholyduckcleaned up how it does direct hardware access and simlar10:18
theholyduckand you know. broke x11 design10:18
crdlbit _is_ being cleaned up10:18
theholyduckthen that would allready improve things10:18
theholyduckcrdlb, but they still stick to the standard10:18
theholyduckwich means it can only get so good10:18
crdlbwhat standard?10:18
theholyduckcrdlb, the x11 design :P10:18
theholyduckthe 1970's idea :P10:18
crdlbthere's nothing wrong with the X11 protocol10:19
crdlbwell, not nothing, but it's not something that needs to be thrown out10:19
theholyduckthe client server model doesnt work anymore10:19
theholyduckbecause almost all developers are failures that rely on local stuff like hal10:19
crdlbit works fine; it's quite powerful in fact10:19
theholyduckcrdlb, well it works. but most APPS dont :P10:20
theholyduckbecause developers like most people10:20
theholyduckare idiots10:20
theholyduckthey are just stupid at diffrent things10:20
crdlbuh, what?10:20
theholyduckcrdlb, developers do stupid things10:22
theholyduckits true :P10:22
theholyduckeven though almost any SANE developer would use libav* directly instead of gstreamer10:22
theholyduckthere are still people that use gstreamer10:22
crdlb-_-10:22
crdlbok, I think that's enough for today10:22

xukunikonia, Thanks but I don't see a section for chipsets. What I need to look?11:08
ikoniaxukun: you need to look in the 2.6.24 kernel which is what 8.10 is running and see if your chipset is supported11:09
ikoniaxukun: or look at the 3rd party nvidia drivers on nvidia's website should you chose to use them11:09
xukunikonia, I have no Idea how to look that in the kernel11:10
VSpikeAre there python version conflicts for everyone, or have I just uniquely screwed up my packages?11:10
ikoniaxukun: isn't a GeForce 9400 a video card ?11:12
ButterflyOfFireVSpike,  I didn't notice a python version conflicts on my machine.11:12
VSpikeButterflyOfFire: have a problem with python-4suite-xml and python-webkitgtk requiring python < 2.6, but an upgrade to 2.6 is required for gimp, hpijs and many other python packages11:14
ButterflyOfFireI think I read about this problem especially python-webkitgtk but I don't remember11:14
xukunikonia, yes but if you look this mb Gigabyte GA-E7AUM-DS2H (GF9400 - S775) it has that chipset11:15
ikoniaxukun: then I have no idea if it is supported, I suspect it won't be supported without 3rd party nvidia kernel modules11:16
xukunikonia, thanks for all the help11:16
ButterflyOfFireVSpike, now I remember I wanted to install Gwibber and got this problem with python-webkitgtk11:23

s0u][ightno package updates for the last 2 days?17:02
PiciEr. I'm getting plenty of updates.17:02
s0u][ighti have no updates at all :| for the few days17:03
PiciHow are you trying to upgrade?17:03
s0u][ightapt-get update && apt-get upgrade17:04
Picis0u][ight: Try using dist-upgrade instead.17:04
PiciThat will pull in new dependencies17:05
s0u][ightPici, i've upgraded to jaunty already17:05
Picis0u][ight: dist-upgrade is not for upgrading between releases.  It pulls in packages that require new dependencies, while just 'upgrade' does not.17:05
s0u][ightPici, didn't bring something new in17:05
Picis0u][ight: Mind pasting your sources.list file?17:06
s0u][ighthttp://rafb.net/p/8EckJH30.html17:07
Picis0u][ight: That mirror doesn't appear to have updated.  Take a look at the last modified dates for the Release file in http://ubuntu.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/ and http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dists/jaunty/17:09
s0u][ightPici, going to change servers, thanks for noticing that17:11
s0u][ightthe test gave me a server from the netherlands as the best one :-)17:12

Exilantso network manager will add it's dns servers after that17:41
FFForeverExilant, how/where do i add them?17:42
DanaGprepend is before, append is after.17:42
Exilantthere should be a line commented out in that file #prepend 1.2.3.4; or so17:42
Exilantuncomment it and insert your dns17:42
FFForeverprepend domain-name-servers 127.0.0.1;17:43
FFForeverhow do i add more then one add a ,?17:43
Exilantby the way, should in jaunty /etc/resolv.conf now be a symlink?17:43
ExilantFFForever: not sure, i think it was two lines like that17:44
FFForeveri only see one =\17:44

calcnew OOo uploading to Jaunty now18:08
calcshould be installable in about 7-8 hours i would guess18:08
Picicalc: Thanks for the fyi18:08
calcit still has known issues with gvfs at least for me, but i needed to get it uploaded today for alpha 618:09
calcof course the previous version had the same gvfs issues as well18:09
calci think the gvfs issues are probably gvfs fault though, but still need to track it down, i got a few issues resolved in gvfs fuse over the past couple weeks so at least OOo can save to a fuse mount now18:09
gmiernickii came across a site that detailed what packages would be in jaunty18:18
gmiernickiand it appeared u could request/nominate packages for inclusion18:18
gmiernickii kno its prolly beyond the date for that18:18
gmiernickibut, i was just curious to see whats included18:18
calcgmiernicki: new gnome, new OOo, new kernel, probably other new things too, new notification system18:19
gnomefreakgmiernicki: its a bit late for that. feature freeze is in affect. you can file a bug for it. if its important ernough you might beable to get an exception (assuming you package it. file a bug and see what happens18:20

CosmiChaosIs anyone experienced with floppy drives? I added a fstab line, module line for the drive and rebooted. Now its reading fine and makes fine noises an writing. But the changes are not saved any ideas? I tried fdflush, but that is exactly not what i want. i want the data from the buffers to be written, not flushed. anywys, when i unmound and mount the floppy, all tthe data i wrote is lost. please help.21:52
CosmiChaosi trie dgflppy for formatting, sure it works in all three modes, but still when i mount the drive the data is still there21:53

drostiefigure out what the partition is called (let's say /dev/sda1, though that's probably wrong) and then type into a console: [sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda1] and see what happens.22:10

drostieCosmiChaos: is the little read0only switch on the floppies open, or closed?22:17
drostie*read-only22:17
drostieshould kill the file system thereupon. you might use xxd to view the raw contents before and after a dd to make sure it's working.22:20
CosmiChaosdrostie: still after dding and mounting my floppy all the data is there22:20
CosmiChaosxannot format or save anything to any floppy neither nautilus and my floppy-drive claim that they wrot estuff22:22

tim_sharittnone of my short cut keys work in jaunty anymore. Is this a common problem, or something I may have messed up on my end?23:19
dtchenwhich "short cut keys"?23:21
magciusIs it a feature or a bug (hopefully fixed) that the current release of notify-osd in Jaunty can only display one notification at a time.23:55
macomagcius: feature23:55
magciusmaco, are you serious? The mockup says otherwise.23:56
macoso you dont have to try to read 15 notification bubbles at once23:56
macobecause that's hard when it only lasts a few moments23:56
macoit can show a brightness/volume/battery notificatoin at the same time as a messaging one23:56
macobut only 1 of each of those types at a time23:56
dtchennotify-osd is still work in progress23:56
dtchensurely you don't expect it to spring forth from the ocean completely feature-complete?23:57
magciusmaco, uggh, what about applications that show notification on song change? I would have a backlog of about 15 messages where I have to wait 3 seconds for each one.23:57
crdlbwith time running out :)23:57
magciusdtchen, I was just wondering if it was implemented that way on purpose.23:57
macomagcius: your songs change that quickly? O_o23:57
magciusmaco, I skip songs a lot.23:57
macothat'd be....0.2 songs per second!23:57
macoer23:57
maco0.2 seconds per song23:58
maco:P23:58
magciusmaco, the idea is that if a song I want to skip comes up (which I can tell by the notification), I can skip it.23:58
danbhfiveIs anyone able to make a failed connection to a wpa encrypted network, with network manager?23:58
macodanbhfive: you want to force a failure?23:58
magciusAlso, can notify-osd currently attach notifications to GTK objects, like Galago's implementation?23:59
danbhfivemaco: well, I gave severe errors when I put in the wrong password23:59
crdlbmagcius: maybe your music player should be closing the old one when it switches in rapid succession23:59
danbhfive*get23:59
dtchen(hmm, stale topic)23:59
magciuscrdlb, how do I close the old one? I have a custom made bash script that uses notify-send.23:59
