Fieldyah i see. this is giving me the option of the restricted drivers. but first i'll just remove the conf and log out/in, i'd rather use the open ones...00:00
Fieldybrb00:00
Fanfarejockey-kde should be found in k-menu00:00
Fanfareok, then drop jockey, as thats for the binary driver...00:01
josh-lhey folks, what browser do you guys use most? do you find that it can handle lots of open tabs, an/or lots of tabs with apps (music, video, java, flash, etc) ?00:08
Fanfarejosh-l: I use Konqi for most cases but i dont do much music / video...00:09
josh-lI recently tried kubuntu (for kde) again which I try every major ubuntu release, and found the browsing the only thing that was very lacking for me... if it werent for that I would have kept kde00:09
bazhangyou can install any browser on kubuntu josh-l00:10
bilickiis KDE4.2 the official stream or not?00:10
josh-lbazhang: I know... i found firefox, konqueror, and opera all to be the same...00:10
bazhangnot yet00:10
bilickiwhen will it be?00:11
bazhangjaunty00:11
bazhangie 9.0400:11
josh-lunstable with many open tabs, and/or many open web apps00:11
bilickibut I can still install it, right?00:11
bilickiare there any potential problems??00:11
bazhangjosh-l, then likely bad extensions, no flashblock, no adblock etc00:11
bazhangbilicki, rave reviews so far; though I have no trouble with 4.100:12
josh-lwhat do you mean by bad extensions? And I shouldnt need flashblock or adblock to have 5 open tabs 3 - 5 open with apps00:12
bilickiwhat's the command for installing amarok 2.000:12
bilickii am lazy to look it up :)00:13
bilickiamarok-kde400:13
bazhangbilicki, but then again worksforme is not a good idea to go by :)00:13
bilickior something?00:13
macojosh-l: are you using adobe flash?00:13
macojosh-l: if so, that's probably the issue00:13
macojosh-l: that plugin is really unstable. it crashes, the browser'll usually go with it00:13
bazhangjosh-l, extensions that use way too many cpu cycles/badly coded00:13
josh-lmaco I believe so, whatever kubuntu-restricted-extras installs, also I should mention I use 64bit os00:13
bilickiyes, it is amarok-kde400:14
bilickii am a genius :)00:14
macoi use NoScript and don't have any problems with crashes. then again, when i didnt use NoScript i still found Firefox to be much more stable than others said00:14
josh-li guess theres no real reason to be a purist (maybe just OCD) but i never liked mixing gtk+qt either way around00:16
bazhangthere is something to make gtk apps more qt-ish though00:16
macothat was my aesthetic excuse for not using kde apps before00:16
macoits ugly though00:16
bazhanghardly a reason not to use ff though imo00:17
macothe bottoms of the tabs get all cut off and the edges of the tabs aren't redrawn and ugh00:17
josh-lam i right to think there is no real reason (non aesthetic reason) to not mix gtk and qt?00:17
bazhangyou are correct00:17
josh-lokay i'll give kubuntu another try by installing kubuntu-desktop, if soomehow ican get through the browsiing issue i'll rfeinstall with kubuntu cd (i know not necessary, but i'm a purist)00:19

Fieldyhello, i just updated from hardy heron to 8.10. all is going well, except that I can no longer fully connect to my vpn server with kvpnc. silentContenderThat seems important04:08
silentContenderDoes that mean, I need to make a new user?04:08
draik_The first one has me wondering if your user was deleted or something since it is marked as 'UNKNOWN'.04:09
draik_Should have had your username there, IIRC04:09
silentContenderSame here04:09
draik_Yes, try to make a new user04:09
silentContenderAnything else I can do?04:10
SlartibartfastsilentContender: when making a new user be sure it will get added to the adm and admin groups as well04:11
SlartibartfastsilentContender: otherwise you won't be able to use sudo04:11
draik_silentContender: As root, 'adduser <username> <group>'04:11
draik_Yup04:11
silentContenderdraik_, what should group be?04:13
silentContenderShould it be "root" or my own?04:14
SlartibartfastsilentContender: groups should be username (your username) adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin04:16
draik_silentContender: IIRC, should be the same as your username along with Slartibartfast's suggestions04:16
silentContenderSo "adduser <username> <username> adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin"?04:17
SlartibartfastsilentContender: yes04:17
draik_silentContender: Yup04:17
silentContenderit says only on or two names allowed04:18
draik_OK, then just use your username and admin for the group and then we'll add the rest later04:18
silentContenderHave to go, thanks for the help04:18
SlartibartfastsilentContender: :-) maybe first try to make "adduser <username>"04:19
Slartibartfastthen userad -G adm dialout cdrom plugdev lpadmin admin <username>04:19
draik_Slartibartfast: I was thinking of doing just that, but wasn't sure of any conflicts for not having groups04:19

DarkriftXive been dealing with this for days with no resolve21:59
DarkriftXi want to fix my damned resolution without using a text editor or a crappy nvidia-settings app that screws everything else up21:59
norenDaSkreech whats the time at ur place now22:00

DaSkreech!fixres22:01
ubottuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution22:01

norenhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/127976/22:10
DarkriftXok, how about a different angle. can anyone tell me why an xorg.conf would be perfect one day and not work worth a crap the next? i made a backup of a working version and when i restore it now, it doesnt restore anything to the way it was22:10

DarkriftXis there an X xorg.conf configuration tool besides nvidia-settings?22:34
DaSkreecheverytime I get to install it it comes back up as if there nothing on the hard drive22:34
DaSkreechDarkriftX: Xorg is working on one but not really there is display in the System Settings22:35
DarkriftXnvidia-settings keeps screwing with stuff and making things worse, but thats the only program that makes (most) things the way i want them.22:35
DarkriftXand i dont know what all these settings are to edit them by hand22:35
DarkriftXthe built in display manager app doesnt even see my second screen22:36
DarkriftXwhy would an xorg.conf work one time but not another?22:36
DaSkreechsomething changed it22:36
DaSkreech?22:36
DarkriftXi have a backup that was working perfectly. i changed settings then tried to restore the backup but it didnt do anything22:36
DarkriftXnope, the backup was never modified22:36
DaSkreechdifferent driver?22:37
DarkriftXsame driver22:37
DarkriftXall ive done is restart x a few times22:37
norenok good day then me leaving bye22:38
DarkriftXi set the settings, had them how i wanted them so i made a backup "xorg.workingdual" and then tried soemthing else. when that didnt work, i "sudo rm xorg.conf" "sudo cp xorg.workingdual xorg.conf" and restarted x. all my settings were gone, but the xorg.conf is now how it was (and the backup still has not been modified)22:38
DaSkreechnoren: night22:38
norenits gonna be morning pretty soon HA HA22:39
norenbye22:39
DaSkreechbye22:39
DarkriftXim going to restart x again and see if i lose all the changes I just made22:39
DarkriftXnope, restarting x lost all my settings22:40
DarkriftXi open nvidia-settings with kdesu, make changes, apply, save changes andmake sure its saving to xorg.conf. when i restart x they are all lost22:41

attilacyilmazlarHi All23:26
attilacyilmazlaris there a system like raid for ubuntu or we have to setup raid for 2 or 3 disks??23:26
=== DarkSmoke is now known as darksmoke
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: a system like raid?  you mean... raid?23:43
attilacyilmazlaryes raid seems complicated23:44
attilacyilmazlaris there another system like raid can be setup easily?23:44
goofeythe only thing that I know of that's like raid but isn;t raid, and this only counts for raid 0, is LVM23:46
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: what *exactly* do you want to do?23:46
attilacyilmazlari want to install jaunty to a raid of 2 160gb hdd's23:49
attilacyilmazlarI read this https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Installation/SoftwareRAID23:50
attilacyilmazlarand it seems complicated23:50
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: which raid?23:50
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: there's 0, 1, 5, 1023:51
attilacyilmazlarraid 123:51
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: the only way I know to do mirroring (raid 1) is via software raid (using the OS) or hardware raid (using a raid card) - ubuntu doesn't have a magic mirroring system23:52
attilacyilmazlargoofey: so we have to follow the instructions on how to doc23:53
attilacyilmazlargoofey: Is it possible to setup raid5 ??23:53
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: sure, raid 5 is supported in linux, but raid 5 requires 3 disks23:55
attilacyilmazlargoofey: yes i know 3 disks23:55
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: and yes, those instructions look fine23:55
attilacyilmazlari already have 2 disks23:56
attilacyilmazlargoofey: on one of them I have Interpid on other Jaunty23:56
attilacyilmazlarI will buy one more and erase jaunty setup 2 of them with jaunty again then will jump to raid523:57
goofeyattilacyilmazlar: wait, you can't raid 2 disks that have OS's on them already and keep the data - creating the raid will wipe the disks23:57
matrixhomiehello23:57
goofeyoj, ok, you know that - just make backups.  :)23:58
attilacyilmazlarthanks23:58
attilacyilmazlarfor testing will try raid 123:58
attilacyilmazlarif no problem then raid523:58
attilacyilmazlarmy master data is in Interpid23:58
DarkriftXcan anyone help me figure out why my display settings will not persist a reboot/restart of x?23:58
itsatrickHello.  Having a little trouble installing KOffice in KUbuntu.  When I use synaptic to install the app, it failes to install "kde-lib-kde4" because it tries to override one of the oxygen icons.  How do I get past this?  I tried deleting the icon, but it didn't work.23:59
