jedHi, im trying to add the mactel ppa to my sources in xubuntu 8.10.  My problem is I do not know what format the apt key needs to be in. The mactel support wiki has an apt-key command that does not work, but it uses the key, so I think I could just save it to a file in specific format that software sources authentication tab wants? I'm not sure what that format is or if I am on the right track. I'm using a MacBook pro and I'm fairly new to11:30
jed Linux.11:30
vinnljed, I don't know what Mactel is but you can easily add a key in Synaptic11:31
vinnlHey charlie-tca11:31
jedI think that is what I have been trying to do, but I dont know what format it wants the key in11:32
vinnljed, in Synaptic, Settings->Repositories, then the Authentication tab, Import Key File11:32
vinnljed, well where can you download the key?11:32
jedthe support wiki has a key but it is just a number in hexadecimal, could i just save that to a file?11:33
vinnljed, can you post a link?11:34
jedhere: https://launchpad.net/~mactel-support/+archive/ppa11:34

Ishmaelhow would i access an ipod like device (not an actual ipod though, knock off type)12:27
vinnlIshmael, probably just plug it in and browse it, but that depends on the device12:27
vinnlHow do you do it in other operating systems?12:27
Ishmaeldidn't work too well in other operating systems12:28
vinnlHow was it _supposed_ to work? ;-)12:28
Ishmaelit has a usb cable12:30
Ishmaelbut...it's really shitty, a family member who i don't respect sent it to me12:30
vinnlWell, USB-cables are easily replacable, but plugging it in and browsing it should work just as well (or bad) as in other operating systems12:31
Ishmaelso you're saying that if everything were going smoothly it should probably pop up on desktop?12:32
vinnlYep12:32
thedavehi! I have a question regarding poweroff. When I am in the login screen and I press the external on/off switch, the machine just goes off without a proper shutdown. When pressing the same button AFTER login, the menu displays my options and I can do a clear shutdown. Is there a way to configure this behaviour?12:34
charlie-tcathedave: when you are not logged in, the desktop environment is not there, so the logout plugin is not available.12:36
Ishmaelis there a good command to see what's plugged into the usb ports?12:37
charlie-tcaI don't know  that there is a way to add the plugin to the login screen, since the login window is GDM, not Xfce12:37
thedavehmm okay. that explains it. but since I use ext2 as a filesystem, this can damage some files if I use the button12:37
vinnlIshmael, "lsusb"12:37
thedaveis there any way to tell my system to just invoke a shutdown -now when pressing the button?12:37
Ishmaelthanks12:38
charlie-tcaYes, but there is SHUTDOWN on the login window, click it for a safe shutdown12:38
thedaveI know, but this machine is more like a router, so I don't always have access to the mouse12:38
charlie-tcaor, go to Ctrl+Alt+F2, login, type "sudo shutdown -P now" and it will do a safe shutdown12:38
Ishmaeli figure the port is dead on it12:39
IshmaelDOA12:39
thedavehmm okay thanks. I think this is the way to go until I figure out to do this with some acpi magic or something ;)12:40
Ishok, voided the warranty to find out, but it is faulty at the usb port13:06

vinnlSorry, never heard of that13:09

thedavesolved my problem: just editied the /etc/acpi/powerbtn.sh and invoked a shutdown13:11

jarnosWhat is the name of Xubuntu's compressing utility?13:12
vinnljarnos, file-roller13:13
jarnosvinnl: can you see it in a menu?13:18
vinnljarnos, nope13:18
viddvinnl, what are you looking for?13:19
vinnlvidd, nothing, jarnos  asked for the name of file-roller :)13:19
knomevinnl, no, he asked for the name of xubuntu's compressing utility ;)13:21
vinnl...which is file-roller :P13:21
jarnosvinnl: I think it is bad, since how users find the program to create a new archive?13:22
vinnljarnos, right-click a folder or files and select "Create Archive"13:22
vinnl(You can also find it using the Appfinder btw)13:22
vidddo ppl actually expect to open the archiver and then select the files to compress?13:23
vinnlI can't imagine, that was the reason it was removed from the menu in the first place13:24
jarnosvinnl: I can't find it by xfce4-appfinder13:25
vinnljarnos, search for "Archive"13:26
viddgee...perhaps we should add a "ghost" app "archiver" that just depends on file-roller13:26
jarnosvinnl: It finds only Xarchiver13:27
vinnljarnos, which version of Xubutnu are you using?13:27
jarnosvinnl: Intrepid + Xfce 4.6 from jeromeg's ppa.13:27
vinnlHmm, odd... And when you execute file-roller from a terminal window, does it work?13:28
jarnosvinnl: yes.13:29
vinnlVery odd13:29
jarnosvinnl: I removed panel directory from home btw.13:29
vinnlPanel directory?13:30
jarnosvinnl: $HOME/.config/xfce4/panel13:30
vinnlAh, that shouldn't matter for finding an application13:31
vinnlAlso, I don't think that should matter at all with Xfce 4.6, I suppose xfconf doesn't store its files in there13:31
viddmy desktop is vanilla and its not in my xfce appfinder either13:32
charlie-tcathe name is Archive Manager, exec is file-roller13:33
vinnlvidd, that's a vanilla Intrepid?13:33

slow-motionhi vidd20:06
viddpitwalker, you asked about adding a user to sudo b4....20:07
viddedit your /etc/group file20:07
viddand add the user to the "admin" line20:07
juanito_using konversation in gnome should be fine too20:09

juanito_in xfce20:09

ferdinanthey ppl20:09
ferdinantI would like to build20:10
ferdinantxfce from source ( the latest release )20:10
viddthe number may be different, and, of course replace "vidd" with your username20:10
ferdinantany tips before I start compiling?20:10
hollywoodbferdinant: use the xfce wiki to get the build order and dependencies right20:10
viddferdinant, download the .deb's from the jaunty repos20:10
hollywoodbferdinant: but you don't need to build 4.6, you can use jerome's PPA20:10
hollywoodbhttps://launchpad.net/~jerome-guelfucci/+archive/ppa20:11
viddheh...or that20:11
ferdinantthanks20:14
pitwalkervidd: I must edit the sudoers20:16
viddpitwalker, only if you want a broken system20:16
pitwalkernot broken20:19
pitwalkerit works20:19
viddpitwalker, you havent restarted yet20:19
pitwalkeri add a line %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL20:19
pitwalkeri not restarted yes20:20
viddbut you did not need to touch sudoers at all20:20
pitwalkeryet20:20
pitwalkerwhy not add the ubuntu default %admin line?20:21
viddit should have already been there20:21
viddand HOW did you edit sudoers?20:22
pitwalkerwhat happen when I restart this system? what happen when i edit sudoers via non visudo?20:22
pitwalkeri edited with nano via ssh20:22
viddyou get  rice crisppies....snap, crackle, and POP!20:22
viddbroken system20:23
pitwalkerand i logged in to tty1 via root20:23
viddyou dont see that its broken because you are root20:23
pitwalkerok reboot20:23
viddonce you log into they system as not root....BORK20:23
viddoh...and root might break too20:24
NarcissusNo, it should work20:24
viddNarcissus, i hope it does20:24
pitwalkerbooting20:24
Narcissusbecause I have done exactly the same20:24
Narcissusyou don't even need to reboot20:24
viddbut it is very bad to mess with sudoers20:24
NarcissusNo it's not, if you know what you're doing20:24
viddNarcissus, he is root20:24
viddhe needs to log out of root (or su user)20:25
Narcissusadding  %admin ALL=(ALL) ALL will allow all users in the group admin to sudo, requiring a password20:25
pitwalkeri can log in via ssh as root :-)20:26
viddyes...but adding it via nano? not a good idea i should think20:26
Narcissusvidd: it doesn't make a different20:26
Narcissusdifference*20:26
Narcissusvisudo simply opens /etc/sudoers in vi20:26
Narcissusa text editor20:26
Narcissususing nano, or notepad on windows then copying it back over would still work20:26
viddNarcissus, it also will not let you save and exit if there is an error20:26
Narcissusit doesn't matter what you edit in, just that you do it properly20:26
pitwalkeri can login via ssh as user and can "sudo bash" :-)20:27
Narcissusyes vidd, but quite a few people don't like vi/vim20:27
Narcissuspitwalker: sudo bash is baaaadd20:27
viddpitwalker, can you "sudo apt-get update" ?20:27
pitwalkeri like sudo bash20:27
pitwalkeri am the admin20:28
Narcissusthe point of sudo, is that it's logged.20:28
viddpitwalker, then why bother logging in as a user?20:28
Narcissusso you sudo <command> and it's logged20:28
Narcissussudo bash will be logged, but the subsequent commands wont be20:28
Narcissusso I could sudo bash20:28
Narcissuscat /etc/shadow20:28
Narcissusand then you wouldn't have known what I've done20:28
pitwalkersudo apt-get update also works20:29
pitwalkerif you run mc the commands also invisible20:29
viddpitwalker, then you successfully updated sudoers without visudo20:29
pitwalkeryes20:29
* vidd will always recommend against this 20:30
viddso...next issue?20:30
pitwalkerok, but we have a good rescue cd, is a Gentoo SYSTEMRESCUECD20:30
pitwalkerwhen we fails20:30
Narcissus...20:31
viddthe "recovery" option in grub works too20:31
Narcissusyah20:31
Narcissusor init level 420:31
Narcissusif ubuntu uses init, i can never remember20:31
viddubuntu uses init.d20:32
pitwalkerwhat do ubuntu when I enter init 1, and to root console, and root don't have a password?20:32
vidddunno if thats the same as what your thinking or not20:32
viddpitwalker, huh?20:32
pitwalkerenter ROOT'S password (or Control-D for maintenance)20:33
Narcissusno its not vidd20:33
pitwalkerI can sudo init 120:33
viddpitwalker, normally, this means your system is borkd20:33
Narcissusno it doesn't20:33
Narcissuspitwalker: it's a utility that allows you to fix partitions without mounting anythign20:34
viddif the average user boots up and gets this screen, then his sytem is messed up20:34
Narcissusso if you boot into init 1, it might mount things as read only, so you can fsck20:34
viddthats the whole point of GETTING this screen20:34
NarcissusI have that quite often on my arch box if I don't unmount properly20:34
viddlike i said "messed up"20:35
pitwalkerin a 9.04 testing environment is nor tare command:init 120:35
pitwalkernot rare20:35
pitwalkernot rare killall gdm20:35
pitwalkernor rare terminals not work but ping is ok20:36
viddpitwalker, ive never had that issue20:36
viddpitwalker, so is your system good now? or do you still need some assistance?20:37
pitwalkerI thanks, I not need any assistance.20:37
pitwalkerI have many systems20:38
JoeBobHey guys, I'm at the screen where it says "Try Xubuntu without and change to your computer". I hit the enter button and nothing happens.  What gives?20:38
viddJoeBob, how much ram you got?20:38
pitwalkerenough your RAM?20:38
JoeBobNot sure one sec20:39
viddalso...make sure your keyboard is detected20:39
pitwalkerHow many MB of ram do you have? The PC hardware is good?20:39
vidd(hit the numlock or caplock key and see if it lights up)20:40
pitwalkerCTRL+ALT+F820:40
JoeBob51220:40
viddJoeBob, are you able to toggle the cap/num lock?20:41
JoeBobKeyboard works because I can select language and select options20:41
viddusb or internal cdrom?20:42
JoeBobInternal20:42
viddonly one optical drive?20:42
JoeBob220:42
viddis the cd in the "master" optical drive?20:42
JoeBobI think so20:43
JoeBobIts a windows computer. when hitting F1 to change boot options, only one cd rom drives shows20:43
pitwalkertry to disable the second drive in the bios, if on individual controller, or unplug power and data cables20:44
pitwalkerIts a BIOS computer20:45
viddtry swapping the drive you put the disk in20:45
pitwalkerthe bios's boot order not same with linuxs device order20:45
JoeBobyou mean make the other cdrom the master drive?20:45
viddusually, the "master" drive is the top20:45
pitwalkerbut this is a live cd self searching bug20:46
pitwalkermaybe20:46
JoeBobyup thats the one with the cd inside20:46
viddno...put the disk in the other optical device...or disable the other optical device20:46
JoeBobIf I try the other cddrive, I get error saying "Invalid Boot Diskette"20:48
JoeBobI'll try disconnection the drive because bios won't allow me to disable drive20:48
vidddiskette????20:49
pitwalkergood luck! I go to sleep.20:49
pitwalkerooh do you have a floppy in a FDD?20:50
pitwalkeror bios boot order not updated and runs out20:50
viddeject the floppy drive20:51
JoeBobI haven't used a floppy in 9 years20:51
pitwalkerthis can happen when no boot device exists20:51
pitwalkerno boot list20:51
viddno hard drive?20:51
pitwalkerno any device20:51
pitwalkerBIOSES are buggy20:52
viddJoeBob, is there a hard drive?20:52
JoeBobYes, the computer works fine20:52
JoeBobI can boot normally into windows20:52
JoeBobburn cds whatever20:53
viddthen why on earth would you get "invalid boot diskette" error on a cdrom drive20:53
JoeBobYour guess is as good as mine20:53
viddis that drive disabled?20:53
JoeBobI'll pull the cord on it hold on20:53
JoeBobOkay, only one HDD and one CDR drive connected. Still same problem20:55
JoeBobI think windows doesn't want me to install xubuntu20:55
viddthat was one quick reboot20:55
viddplease tell me you killed power before pulling cords!20:56
JoeBobYes20:56
viddok....20:56
viddlets try this,.....20:56
viddreconnect all your stuff....20:56
vidddo you intend to dual boot?20:57
JoeBobI've installed hardware and liux many times20:57
viddor just test-drive it?20:57
JoeBobtest drive it so I can get family off windows20:57
JoeBobThey not sure if they will like it20:57
viddthere is the wubi option20:58
vidd!wubi20:58
ubottuWubi is an Ubuntu installer for Windows users that allows you to install and uninstall Ubuntu like a Windows application, in a simple and safe way. http://wubi-installer.org/support.php for troubleshooting. Please file bugs at http://launchpad.net/wubi/+filebug.20:58
pitwalkerwubi is too slow20:58
pitwalkerrepartitioning is the best20:58
JoeBobhmm I think I might try ubuntu and redownloading xubuntu21:01
JoeBobmaybe the burn got messed up21:01
pitwalkerchack the md5sum21:02
pitwalkervalidate the media21:02
JoeBobyou mean "check cd for defects"?21:02
pitwalkerfsum check in windows21:02
pitwalkeryes21:02
JoeBobThat doesn't work21:02
pitwalkeryou can burn wrong CD from good ISO21:03
JoeBobHitting enter on every option but option "boot from first hard disk" doesn't work21:03
pitwalkerImgBURN is the best under windows21:03
pitwalkercan verify21:03
TheSheepit's important to do the check on the same cd drive that you are going to use for installation21:03
JoeBobI burned xubuntu on macbook21:03
TheSheepold cd drives have often problems reading cheap cds burned with high speeds21:03
pitwalkeri don't  try macbook21:04
pitwalkerplease try the live cd in other PC21:04
JoeBobonly one pc21:04
pitwalkerplease download virtualbox for mac and try to run the ISO21:05
pitwalkeri write form virtualbox with linux guest windows host21:05
pitwalkeroops virtualbox only works with intelMACS21:07
JoeBobIts already installed testing rightnow21:07
JoeBobSame problem in VM21:09
JoeBobGuess that means cd crappy21:10
pitwalkerif you read back the CD to a ISO file and check that md5sum and this is same as the cdimage.ubuntu.com/your release/MD5SUM file, the CD is valid21:11
viddwait....21:11
viddJoeBob, you burned the cd from a macbook?21:11
JoeBobyes21:11
viddit wont work on a PC then21:11
pitwalkerYou use a CD-RW?21:11
JoeBobYes cdrw21:12
JoeBobbut why won't it work21:12
viddyou mac is ppc arch...right?21:12
JoeBobintel21:12
viddwill it boot correctly on the mac?21:13
JoeBobIt mounts correctly21:13
viddwill it boot?21:13
pitwalkerintel mac can boot to this cd21:13
ndeahI have problems installing xubuntu 8.10 alternate21:13
pitwalkerndeah: package selection broken?21:14
ndeahsources.list only cdROM entry21:14
viddpitwalker, but if the cd will boot on the mac but not the pc, then its because the iso was burned for mac-intel and not pc21:14
ndeahchecking the cd from the alternate main menu shows md5sum error21:15
viddndeah, did the install go smoothly? or did it fail?21:15
viddndeah, then its a bad burn21:15
ndeahfail. the installation hangs at step of installing software21:15
JoeBobI duon't know, I try burning the cd on windows.21:16
viddyour option are either reburn the disk, or do a hack install like i walked pitwalker thru earlier21:16
ndeahvidd: burned 3 times, slowest mode. a friend also 2 times different cd burners21:17
JoeBobThanks for your time guys21:17
viddJoeBob, its best to burn it from the pc that is going to run it21:17
viddndeah, did you verify the image?21:17
pitwalkerndeah: not hard the install without bad packages and olyn CD repo21:17
pitwalkerndeah: please run the memtest option for 2 hours21:18
ndeahvidd: verify. yes21:18
pitwalkerif you burn one the CD please use VERIFY21:18
pitwalkerBEFORE you burn the cd please check the md5sum21:18
pitwalkersometimes CD drives are unclean, i read back a ubuntu cd 2 times badly and the 4th is good the drive is clean :-)21:19
ndeahso there is no knownissue?21:20
pitwalkeri try 3 hours before with xubuntu 9.04 daily 2009-03-0821:20
viddno...its a bad burn21:21
pitwalkerno comment21:21
ndeahok. thank you. makes it easier for me. will try again.21:21
viddpitwalker, you want to walk ndeah thru fixing his system?21:21
pitwalkerndeah: because ubuntu changes rapidly I recommend CR-RW21:21
* vidd recommends the mini iso =]21:22
pitwalkerndeah: please read back the log, tomorrow i must go to work, byebye21:22
viddits only 10 mb21:22
pitwalkeri also recommend the mini iso21:22
ndeahvidd: I'm using the mini.iso now for my machine. but need iso's for a computer room21:23
ndeahpidwalker: thankyou21:23
viddndeah, the computer room have internet access?21:23
ndeahyes. but slow21:23
viddslow is better then not at all....21:24
viddyou MIGHT want to make a local mirror21:24
ndeahyou think slow internet connection better than slow/old cdrom drives?21:24
viddndeah, you KNOW the mini iso is working21:25
viddand its already burnt21:25
ndeahmini.iso already installed. getting the xfce-desktop21:25
