DaSkreechThis probably falls into big problems :)00:27
DaSkreechwhat regressions?00:27
phitooDaSkreech: Flashplugin has not worked in Konqueror for weeks. KMail has a date problem. There is krunner thing and so on.00:28
DaSkreechReally?00:28
DaSkreechFlashplugin has actually been working better for me00:28
DaSkreechYoutube now magically works00:28
DaSkreechhaven't heard of a Kmail date problem either00:29

DaSkreechHouston we have a problem?00:29
phitooDaSkreech: The date problem on kmail is known I think but the fix has not reached my desktop yet.00:29
DaSkreechok if true00:30
DaSkreechwhat is the krunner thing?00:30
phitooDaSkreech: the problem we have been discussing. I call it the "krunner thing". I have in fact taken to killing krunner on startup. I forgot to do that today.00:32
DaSkreechah. That causes  the file dialogs to bug out?00:32
phitooDaSkreech: I don't know. I don't see why krunner would have anything to do with a file dialog.00:33
DaSkreechIt shouldn't unless strigi or something is linking them00:34
phitooDaSkreech: But, I find that it's frozen when the dialog is frozen.00:34
DaSkreechphitoo: What do you have enabled in krunner?00:34
phitooDaSkreech: I've disable strigi. And for that matter akonadi and nepomuk.00:35
SuspectZerohow much swap space is recommended? 1.5 times the amount of ram u have?00:35
DaSkreechSuspectZero: roughly00:35
Dr_willisSuspectZero,  depends on your needs also00:35
phitooDaSkreech: Just what comes standard with the system.00:35
SuspectZeroawesome thanks00:35
Dr_willisIf you plan on hibernate/suspending - that much may be needed..00:36
DaSkreecha little bit more if you have very little RAM a little bit less if you have lots of RAM and then dependent on what you are doing  and response needs00:36
Dr_willisbut if you go 4gb of ram ... seems a bit overkill to have 6gb of stap.00:36
Dr_willisoops swap.00:36
DaSkreechphitoo: Hmm I think that it comes with everything enabled by default may want to thin that out00:36
Dr_willisYOu can always add swap files later if you want00:36
phitooDaSkreech: Ok! I'll try that. In fact, I wasn't aware it was configurable.00:38
DaSkreechphitoo: The little wrench on the side. Just go through and take out stuff that you wouldn't be interested in00:40
phitooDaSkreech: will do.00:41
phitooDaSkreech: It occurs to me that I've never even used the thing yet... :-) That must be why I don't miss when I kill it.00:42
DaSkreechphitoo: Well don't turn it on then :-)00:43

FoxBlitzzI know it's "Experimental" but you'd think they would at least take the time to ensure that it'd work...04:09
kuaeraFoxBlitzz: I'm running Jaunty with all updates, and it's still very much into development.04:11
FoxBlitzzYou mean it's very complete or very incomplete?04:11
kuaeraBoth.04:11
kuaeraSome days, I'll update and the system's hardly usable due to some runaway critical process04:12
kuaeraOther days, it's perfectly usable04:12
goofeythat's the definition of "alpha" folks04:12
FoxBlitzzI know, I know04:12
FoxBlitzzI was just wondering if they would be able to still fix silly things like the Dolphin flickering glitch I mentioned above in time for public release04:12
FoxBlitzzI don't know how their dev process works...04:13
goofeydepends of it's a kde issue or a kubuntu issue I think04:13
goofeyer, depends *if*04:13
goofeyI think there's a better chance of it being fixed for 9.04 if it's a kubuntu issue04:14
FoxBlitzzSeems more like KDE04:15
goofeywell, in that case, kde has to fix it and then kubuntu has to add the fix - more steps04:15
FoxBlitzzWould a bug like this likely be patched during the Jaunty lifecycle?04:15
demiDang, how do I get my 3d look when I ALT TAB?04:16

DaSkreechiraqsat: Openoffice doesn't speak Kio or Gio you will have to copy the files across. Openoffice doesn't know how to read across the network like that06:31
DaSkreechKoffice probably woluld though ...:-/06:32
DaSkreechRoxy: It stopped doing the mirroring ?06:32
RoxyWhat06:32
RoxyOh06:32
RoxyNo it did not06:32
DaSkreechiraqsat: or rather if You can get OO.o to do them then I'm not sure how06:33
DaSkreechchairman: What is timevault?06:34
iraqsatOO.o?06:34
DaSkreechOpenOffice.org06:34
iraqsatwhat is that means?06:34
iraqsataha06:34
DaSkreechit's the full name of Openoffice06:34
DaSkreechmost people call it OO.o for short06:34
iraqsatok got it06:34
DaSkreechiraqsat: Gnome and KDE apps use smb:/path/to/file which is a neat trick06:35
DaSkreechOpenoffice being neither Gnome or KDE knows how to do that06:35
RPSwhile you are on the topic ...will the new OO.o be included in Jaunty?06:35
DaSkreechYes06:36
DaSkreechThe new $APP is always included once it's released before freeze06:36
chairmanit's been out for linux .it's like apple time machine w/o the 3d effects.....yet06:36
iraqsatDaSkreech: I need to assist me with this issue if you can. my question is can the kubuntu users oppen OO.0 ?06:37
DaSkreechchairman: Ha cute. So what did you expect it to open with?06:37
DaSkreechiraqsat: Actaully that's a good question let me try06:37
chairmanwith ark or something06:38
chairmanit just asks me to open with what app...as with anything else for kubuntu06:38
iraqsatDaSkreech: Ok sir I will be wait for you06:39
chairmannever mind i got it thanks06:40
RPSI got a little baffled with my Kubuntu experiment ....when I came back over to Ubuntu I now have some things that kept their K look.06:40

iraqsatDaSkreech: So... what is the solution ?06:46
DaSkreechiraqsat: CIFS ?06:46
iraqsatDaSkreech:  CIFS ?? what is that means?06:47
DaSkreechIt's the replacement for smbfs06:47
DaSkreechYou can mount the samba share as if it was a directory on the computer06:47
DaSkreechonce it has the local URL then OO.o can read it fine06:47
iraqsatDaSkreech: I am new on KDE what is that means and who can I mount the samba share ?06:48
iraqsatDaSkreech: can you guide me step by step please ?06:48

DaSkreechiraqsat: ok do you understanding mounting in UNIX ?06:51
iraqsatDaSkreech: no I don't sir06:51
DaSkreechDo you understand mounting in general?06:52
DaSkreechFor anyother OS?06:52
iraqsatDaSkreech: no :(06:52
DaSkreech(Yes I realise there is basically only one other OS)06:52
DaSkreechok You know how to format a drive ?06:52
iraqsatDaSkreech: yes06:52
DaSkreechok when you are formatting a drive you are putting a file system on the hardware06:53
iraqsatyes06:53
iraqsatI mount the first one as root06:53
DaSkreecha file system is a description of files where they are and how to access them06:53
DaSkreechRight06:53
iraqsatand the sec as swap area06:53
DaSkreech So in UNIX you mount file systems06:54
iraqsatand the 3rd as home06:54
DaSkreechand you mount them on the FHS06:54
DaSkreechThe Filesystem Hierarchy standard06:54
DaSkreech!fhs06:54
ubottuAn explanation of how files and directories are organized on Ubuntu, and how they can be manipulated, can be found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LinuxFilesystemTreeOverview06:54
iraqsatok ?06:54
DaSkreechYou can read up on it there06:54
DaSkreechBut unlike windows there is one root06:54
DaSkreech /06:54
iraqsatright06:54
DaSkreechIn Windows there are as many roots as you have partitions06:55
iraqsatright06:55
DaSkreechtechnically they all come under My Computer but that doesn't really count06:55
DaSkreechSo when you mounted /home you mounted a new file system06:55
iraqsatok ?06:55
DaSkreechWhich I assume was a partition on the same drive right ?06:55
iraqsatno it's just one partitioon06:56
DaSkreechok where did you get /home from ?06:56
iraqsat1- /06:56
iraqsat2- swap area06:57
DaSkreechsecond drive ?06:57
iraqsat3- home06:57
DaSkreechright06:57
DaSkreechbut where is 3 coming from ?06:57
DaSkreecha different drive?06:57
iraqsatno same drive06:57
iraqsatI have just one drive06:57
DaSkreechand same partition ?06:57
iraqsatno different partition06:58
DaSkreechright06:58
DaSkreechso it's a different partition on the same drive ?06:58
iraqsatright06:58
DaSkreechRight cool06:58
DaSkreechyou could have put in a second drive and mounted that as /home as well06:58
iraqsatright06:59
DaSkreechin fact you could put in a USB drive and mount that as /home06:59
DaSkreechas long as you can describe the file system you can mount as a directory in UNIX06:59
DaSkreechso if you put in a USB drive it comes up as /media/something07:00
iraqsatright07:00
DaSkreechonce it recognizes the file system07:00
DaSkreechOk So here is the cool part07:00
DaSkreechYou can do that across the network as well07:00
DaSkreechso you can mount a remote computer as a directory07:00
iraqsathow is that ?07:00
iraqsatok?07:00
DaSkreechjust mount the file system07:00
jrperpetuhi! i'm Jose from Philippines. I'm new to Ubuntu and I find it great. Since I'm neophyte to it, I never knew on how to network wherein my 3 desktop can meet and be able to share resources such as printer. can anybody help me? Please!07:00

iraqsat:(07:02
DaSkreechiraqsat: Ok you understand the concept?07:02
jrperpetuthanks!07:02
iraqsatDaSkreech: no :(07:02
DaSkreechUNIX doesn't care where the files are as long as it can speak to it and understands the file system then it will treat it like a local file07:02
jrperpetui'll try next time. thanks. i need to go now........07:03
DaSkreechiraqsat: So when you have a USB stick in there07:03
DaSkreechyou get say /media/sdb107:03
iraqsatright07:03
iraqsatuntil now i understand you07:03
DaSkreechwhen you cd in there you are moving out of your computer into the USB drive07:03
iraqsatright07:03
DaSkreechso it's just like any other directory except you are now somewhere else07:04
iraqsatok07:04
DaSkreechall the programs can see it fine and they don't know or care that it is a different partition or a different drive or a different deice07:04
DaSkreechdevice07:04
DaSkreechfor them it's just another directory07:04
DaSkreech / and /etc and /var/cache/apt looks exactly the same as /home for your computers07:05
DaSkreechin fact if you don't tell people they can't tell that /home is a different partition07:05
DaSkreechWhere as in windows they would get a new drive letter07:05
DaSkreechright ?07:05
iraqsatright07:06
DaSkreechright so we are going to take the samba machine that you have and make it a local directory07:06
iraqsatok07:06
DaSkreechso when any program looks at it it's just like any other directory even though the file are on a different device07:07
DaSkreechin this case a computer across the network07:07
iraqsatright07:07
iraqsatI understand what you mean07:08
DaSkreechcool so for that we need something that describes how the files are on the computer and how to get it across the network so that users don't have to figure that out07:08
DaSkreechwhich is CIFS07:08
DaSkreechso if you look at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MountWindowsSharesPermanently07:08
iraqsataha07:08
iraqsatgreat07:08
DaSkreechThere is a line that says //servername/sharename  /media/mountname  cifs  guest,uid=1000,iocharset=utf8,codepage=unicode,unicode  0  007:08
DaSkreechThat's from /etc/fstab07:08
* Slartibartfast reads with interests the explanations of DaSkreech, and thinks he does a great job :-)07:09
DaSkreechthe part you want to notice is a) the first part describes how to get to the computer across the network and then cifs which is the file system youwill be using07:09
DaSkreechyou will have to install cifs on the computers of course07:09
DaSkreech!info cifs07:09
ubottuPackage cifs does not exist in intrepid07:09
DaSkreechbooo07:09
DaSkreech!info smbfs07:10

DaSkreechhooray! :)07:10
iraqsatright07:10
iraqsatso in my case I have to install each computers with CIFS and SMBFS ?07:10
iraqsatam I right ?07:11
DaSkreechsmbfs installs cifs07:11
iraqsatgot it07:11
DaSkreechiraqsat: Yes but you can do that in like 50 seconds07:11
iraqsathow is that ?07:11
DaSkreechsmall shell scripts are great :)07:11
DaSkreechdo you have ssh turned on for the machines ?07:11
iraqsatcan you guid me please ?07:11
iraqsatyes07:11
DaSkreechthen you can just write a shell script that loops through the network and runs ssh admin@[replacewithipaddress] 'sudo apt-get install --yes smbfs'07:12
DaSkreechand it will go to all the machines login start the install logout and then move to the next machine07:13
iraqsatok I will try to do it now07:13
iraqsatand I will be back for you07:13
DaSkreechthen you may want to make a link for the users to where ever you decided to mount the share07:14
DaSkreechso they don't have to go looking for it07:14
DaSkreechdrop it in /etc/skel07:14
iraqsatok07:15
iraqsatgot it07:15
iraqsatI will try now07:15
iraqsatand go to smok07:15
iraqsat:)07:15

DaSkreechwell then in the makefile set that one app to be sudo instead of every random thing the makefile runs07:53
ActionParsnipdevilsadvocate: you dont need sudo to build binarys, only install them to the system proper, you can build the source in ~ and yuo wont need sudo07:54

estanhm. after someone commits something to intrepid-updates, how long before it's available with aptitude update?10:13
estani just got a notice on a kernel bug i've been following that a fix is in intrepid-updates, i've been using custom-compiled kernel debs to work around it until now.10:14
ActionParsnipestan: as soon as the user apt-get updates it will be downloadable10:14
estanhm. well it's not there yet.10:14
estanthe commit was maybe 10 min ago.10:14
estanjust wondering if there's some lag between mirrors or something.10:15
ActionParsnipestan: sounds likely. I'd try in an hour or so just so you know its done10:15
estanyea.10:15
estanhm. but how does it work if i've manually installed kernel debs with dpkg -i, will aptitude see an updated kernel in repo as an update?10:16
estanor do i have to aptitude remove the version installed from deb first?10:16
ActionParsnipestan: if the version number is later it will upgrade it10:17
estan(the debs i used are http://people.ubuntu.com/~apw/lp193970-intrepid/ and the commit to intrepid-updates is https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24/+bug/193970/comments/153)10:17
estanokay. cool.10:17
estanhm. is there a way with aptitude search to see which version is in repo?10:18
ActionParsnipestan: apt-cache search <whatever>10:18
estanah right, the kernel versions have the version in their package name.10:18
ActionParsnipthen sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get upgrade10:19
estanyea.. hm. i pasted the wrong url, that was the commit against jaunty repos.. it seems it's not visible on LP eventhough i got an e-mail about it.. (Andy Whitcroft did the commit)..10:20
estanor wait. it is visible, but just as a status update, he didn't leave a comment about it.10:21
estanah, Fix Commited doesn't necessarily mean it has been pushed out to repos?10:21
estani mean, should it say Fix Released before i can expect it to turn up in repos?10:22
estan(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-ubuntu-modules-2.6.24/+bug/193970 is the bug)10:23
estanor no.. Fix Released probably just means it's in a release..10:24

amgarchingOk, I solved DHCP problem. The DHCP server didnt derive the hostname from the section name as advertized in docs, one needs to explicitly tell the server: host HOSTNAME { fixed-address HOSTNAME; option host-name "HOSTNAME"; ddns-hostname "HOSTNAME"; ... }. vitalkuaera, I guess you are right, I can wait, I only use the laptop when I'm away for coding, so I dont really need any speed or 3D-support :) so I'll wait a bit longer.18:46
kuaeravital: I was just so happy with xcompmgr last night, before I noticed the performance hit :< Set up a new theme on my laptop. Really nice.18:47
vitalkuaera, yes, compositing is a performance hog :( hopefully the opensource ati-driver will get better accelleration for compositing, as I guess the proprietary driver is a lot faster?18:50

gabrielgoofey: i recently ran ubuntu 8.10 and had NO problems. In kubuntu 8.10, it's a bit buggy, altogh now I actually went for 64 bit. Right now, it annoys me a bit that firefox doesn't render it's gui perfectly. the tabs in FF look a bit buggy :/19:45

DaSkreechshadowhywind: I'm going to guess with a dbus error?21:22
Bodo07Hi. I have kubuntu 8.10 amd64 and the usb don't work. Can someone help me?21:22
noren_DaSkreech: it seems shadowhywind got the same prob i had21:22

DaSkreechgabriel: what are you trying to do so I have some context?21:23
shadowhywindDaSkreech: yes, hehe21:23
redwizardstudiosanyone know where i'd go to find info on how to force kubuntu to let me edit the IP/DNS settings as the settings in the KDE interface dont seem to affect where i'm pinging from(always seems to be from 192.168.1.1)21:23
gabrielDaSkreech: just upgrade to kde4.221:23
wally[wiiing]a 404 error rules out a bad network or DNS issue, the problem would appear to be your apt is not getting the latest package lists21:23
noren_gabriel: when i update there are few things which i get always aaas failed but it sould not be a prob21:23
shadowhywindnoren_ been having this issue all week, just been restoring my old backups of .kde folder. but its not working now21:23
wally[wiiing]ok21:24
shadowhywindnoren_ what did you do to fix it, or are you still having that issue?21:24
DaSkreechgabriel: k so you enabled unsupported updates ?21:24
gabrielnoren: are u sure? last time i tried to upgrade to kde4.2 i had to reinstall kubuntu :/21:24
gabrielDaSkreech: yes21:24
gabrielDaSkreech: however, if i disable unsoppreted updates, i still get failed update21:25
noren_gabriel: mann i had already installed fresh kubuntu quite a few times myself21:25
shadowhywindDaSkreech: did you guys come up with a solution for it?21:25
DaSkreechgabriel: Yes I know that isn't coming from the KDE 4.2 upgrade21:25
noren_shadowhywind: i and Daskreech cud not find the solution then may this time DaSkrech cud help21:25
DaSkreechThat's normal ubuntu upgrades21:25
DaSkreechnoren_: I can't unfortunately21:26
DaSkreechjussi01: ping21:26
goofeyredwizardstudios: it would be uncommon for a desktop to be 192.168.1.1 - that's usually the IP of the default gateway (aka router) on a 192.168.1.x network21:26
jussi01DaSkreech: pong21:26
noren_shadowhywind: did u by any chance had installed amarok nighlty beforre the crash21:26

redwizardstudiosgoofey: its a BT Hub.  The hubs IP is 192.168.1.25421:26
shadowhywindnoren_ well I am doing some updates that also involve a few plasma packages, i don't really remember have had amarok installed for a while21:26

DaSkreechjussi01: Any idea who would it seems a common enough issue that it should have a fix documented somewhere21:27
redwizardstudiosgoofey: i've tried dhcp auto assignment and static ip's21:27
redwizardstudiosi'm guessing if its not setting the IP properly its not setting the DNS either21:28

goofeyAmyRose: wdo you have a specific question?21:35
DaSkreechgabriel: try the upgrade21:35
wanting_ithaynesp21:36
AmyRoseWell, I have a bunch of Qt 4.5-related glitches, mostly related to toolbars. The main one is that buttons appear to be pushed in when pointing at them. I'm just using Oxygen.21:36
goofeyredwizardstudios: so, the dhcp server is unable to respond to computers behind the hub?  that doesn't sound right21:36
ameliei need help; i had to reformat my hard drive, installed kubuntu 8.10 and when i try to get aplications with apt-get install, it says "couln't find package"21:36
DaSkreechshadowhywind: mv ~/.kde/share/config/plasma-appletsrc ~ && plasma21:36
gabrielDaSkreech: the thing is i already pressed upgrade in the package manager before we did this :P21:37
gabrielDaSkreech: so... is it too late or what?21:37
DaSkreechgabriel: ah...21:37
DaSkreechno not too late21:37
redwizardstudiosgoofey: its not a hub as such i have the hub which if i connect to directly with a desktop can auto assign, but if i connect via the router up stairs(its an adsl router) i have to manually tell the machines to route thru the bt home hub as the machines assume the network connection is on the router there plugged into21:37
