mediadragonHello! I'm having a bit of trouble installing xubuntu on my laptop. When checking my partitions it gave me a warning message about one of my sectors(?) being HIGHLY EXPERIMENTAL, then the partition thing froze at 50%.03:49
Chai619anyone awake that knows if its normal for xubuntu install to just hang forever?05:32
Chai619anyone?05:34
luis08hi everyone! I'm having some resolutions problem... I've changed to 1280x1024, but now all the text looks huge, in the titles, toolbars and so on... and sometimes, when I change the resolution, the panels dissappear... any ideas?11:32
luis08hi! how can I lock my screen on xfce? there's no such option in 'quit', such as in gnome12:23
TheSheepalt+ctrl+del12:23
TheSheepthere is also a panel applet you can add12:24
TheSheepor bind xflock to other key12:24
tawIs there some simple way to run 32 bit browser in 64 bit ubuntu?12:27
tawlooks like vmware esx console plugin doesn't work in my system, and I'd like to try if question is about 64 bit firefox12:27
luis08TheSheep, thanks!!12:31
ablomentaw, google is usefull... http://www.linux.com/feature/54218 << first hit :)12:34
tawablomen, apparently I was using wrong keywords, spend 30 minutes on pages saying 'script removed, not relevan anymore, etc'12:39
ablomenhaha ok well my query was: 32bit firefox on 64bit linux :)12:40
tawI was searching on ubuntu point of view12:40

Administratorim running XAMPP on a xubuntu machine, which is a development web server, and for a reason i dont know of, as of last night, whenever I start XAMPP, my xubuntu wireless connection stops working, and i cant reconnect, i have to restart to connect again15:28
=== Administrator is now known as moz
=== moz is now known as moz2
moz2anyone got any thoughts on that, because its driving me insane, i cant do anything becasue i got disconnected all the time15:30
SiDiisnt xamp for windows ? T_T15:32
SiDimoz2, whats your question ?15:32
moz2its for both15:32
SiDiyou mean lamp, i guess15:33
moz2yeah15:33
moz2im wondering whats happened to my wireless connection15:33
moz2the icon for it completely dissaperes15:33
moz2at the top, and re plugging in my usb device does not activate it again15:33
SiDihttp://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.ubuntu-fr.org%2Flamp&sl=fr&tl=en&history_state0=15:34
SiDitype "nm-applet" to get the applet back15:35
SiDii guess you somehow modified your file /etc/network/interfaces, that's the only way for nm-applet to stop loading15:35
moz2well /etc/network/interfaces hasnt been modified since 25th january, long before i got any problems15:37
moz2SiDi: and nm-applet gave me the message that it could not acquire the networkmanagerusersettings service and it is already taken. Return: 315:38
moz2(nm-applet:5928): GLib-GObject-CRTICIAL **: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed15:39
SiDinm-applet should not launch if /etc/network/interfaces isnt default anyway15:41
SiDii'm really curious about knowing what you did in order to install lamp15:41
SiDiapart from modifying this file (or maybe /etc/resolv.conf or /etc/bind9/* files), i don't see how you could break network-manager15:42
moz2network manager launches at start up though15:42
SiDiyou should join #ubuntu and ask there, cause i cant help on things i dont know ;P15:42
SiDiand it crashes when you launch apache2 ?15:42
moz2and connects to the internet fine, then i telnet in15:42
moz2i get "Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.7...."15:43
moz2then "XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)..."15:43
moz2then thats the last message i get, because it disconnects and im telneting in15:43
moz2if i do it locally, then i will see other messages about XAMPP starting, the network disconnects after the second message15:44
moz2SiDi: anymore thoughts or you stumped?15:45
SiDiexcuse me, but XAMPP for linux, that sounds like a joke15:45
SiDiXAMP is a windows port of LAMP15:45
SiDiyou're using a linux port of a windows port of native linux apps. :|15:45
moz2well its been working fine for a month lol, i start it from /opt/lampp/lampp15:45
SiDiand i dont see what telnet has to do with launching a lamp server on your machine15:46
SiDiyour objective is to have an apache server with php5 and mysql/postgresql server running on your PC, right ?15:46
moz2nothing im just saying its useful to do, because i can see what point i lose the connection15:46
moz2yeah15:46
SiDiwell, remove that huge weird xampp thing :P15:47
SiDihttp://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.ubuntu-fr.org%2Flamp&sl=en&tl=fr&history_state0= that's a google translate of the french doc15:47
SiDijust check the name of the apps they install15:47
SiDibasically apache2 apache2-php5 mysql a 1/2 other packages15:47
SiDiand then you'll have a default install that works just WELL15:47
SiDithere also is a package for phpmyadmin15:47
moz2thanks15:48
moz2it says on the XAMPP for linux page15:48
moz2"By the way: In the past this software was called LAMPP but to avoid misconceptions we renamed it to »XAMPP for Linux«. So if you are seeking for LAMPP you're on the right track. ;)"15:48
SiDihttp://translate.google.com/translate?prev=_t&hl=fr&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fdoc.ubuntu-fr.org%2Flamp&sl=fr&tl=en *15:48
SiDibtw, ubuntu server install CD has cool options for LAMP15:49
SiDiyou just have to check a box during the install to get a well configured lamp serv15:49
moz2dammit i only have an old laptop, that is too old even run uxbuntu lol15:49
moz2this installtion seems to have really messed up, its taking like 5 minutes to start, should be about 25 seconds15:50
moz2*xubuntu15:50
moz2but it just manages, sometiems15:50
SiDierm yes15:50
SiDidefinately messed :p15:50
SiDishow me your /etc/network/interfaces pl0x15:50
moz2gunna have to give me a sec i tried restarting xampp and its crashed half way through, i cant even ctrl-c out lol15:51
moz2oh xubuntu's crashed completely! not good. i havent messed with anything15:52
moz2gunna take a minute to restart, but i can tell you my interfaces file is only two lines long, excluding comments15:52
moz2its been working absolutely spot on for weeks, i've been configured my databases with phpmyadmin etc but thats all15:54
SiDihm15:54
SiDiauto lo15:54
SiDiiface lo inet loopback15:54
SiDi?15:54
moz2think so15:54
moz2just gunna check when its finishing having a heart attack lol15:54
charlie-tcaSiDi: go take a look at http://www.apachefriends.org/en/faq-xampp-linux.html15:54
moz2i changed my in lamp/htdocs chmod to 777 from 755 as well15:55
* charlie-tca been running XAMPP for Linux for 3 years15:55
moz2did you ever have it kill your internet connection lol ?15:55
SiDiimho xampp is a fat app that does apache+php+mysql, charlie-tca15:56
SiDiand i never managed to make it work, while installing those 3 on my own and modding my conf files was just working fine15:57
charlie-tcaXAMPP is easier to install for testing, and doesn't require the resources that a full apache, php, mysql requires15:57
charlie-tcaIt's great for testing my websites before I put them on public display15:57
moz2yeah this is what im doing15:58
charlie-tcaIt also doesn't need the security stuff that a full-blown apache needs15:58
moz2SiDi: yeah its got those two lines thats all.15:58
charlie-tcano, never killed the connection. It should be separate15:58
moz2yeah i cant see how its possible got anything to do with it15:59
moz2but my internet will be fine, untill i try starting xampp15:59
moz2then all will go horribly wrong15:59
moz2and i'll have to restart my computer, to connect to the internet again16:00
charlie-tcachange the port it runs on, normally it has been set for port 80, I think.16:00
moz2how do i do that - sorry not too experienced with running my own web servers16:01
charlie-tcaDid you set up security on it?16:03
moz2charlie-tca: i ran the security script yeah16:03
moz2and its told me its secure now, passwords changed etc16:04
moz2why?16:04
charlie-tcaTry changing that back.16:04
moz2charlie-tca: how? the security script seems to only add security now to remove it16:06
moz2and also i'd need to start mysql it says to change security, and i cant start it without it messing up everything16:06
charlie-tcaI think I had to reinstall to remove it.16:06
moz2if i uninstall it, will it remove my htdocs and databases16:07
charlie-tcaTry going into lampp/etc/httpd.conf, find the line for Listen 12.23.56.78:8016:07
charlie-tcamake it say Listen 8016:07
moz2ok16:08
charlie-tcaAlso in that file, comment out any LoadModule proxy...16:08
charlie-tcathen restart xampp and see if that worked16:09
moz2ok i ocmmented out loadmodule proxy*16:10
moz2but Listen 12.23.56.78:80 was already commented out16:10
moz2and Listen 80 was already there16:10
charlie-tcaokay16:11
moz2i get "Starting XAMPP for Linux 1.7...."16:12
moz2then "XAMPP: Starting Apache with SSL (and PHP5)..."16:12
moz2and now its taking an unusually long time for the next bit16:12
charlie-tcathat's okay16:12
moz2and now yeah, the network disconnected like befor16:12
moz2before16:12
moz2and as soon as it does that, the rest comes up16:13
moz2starting mysql16:13
moz2ftp16:13
moz2"XAMPP for linux started"16:13
charlie-tcatry not starting some of those modules, then. one at a time16:13
moz2charlie-tca: so it seems like its getting stuck trying something at the point of starting apache with SSL and php5, and when it disconnects it gets past that bit16:13
charlie-tcaYeah, it might be the SSL doing it16:14
moz2argh, now its crashed again :( xubuntu16:14
moz2theres hard drive activitiy, but i cant do anything16:14
charlie-tcaFind the option to start without ssl16:14
moz2oh its back, just took ages16:14
moz2gone again, what the hell is going on16:15
moz2thats only a little hard drive activity, and its making everything not responding16:15
charlie-tcait is trying to start something16:15
moz2ok16:15
moz2charlie-tca: shall i comment out the ssl_module16:16
charlie-tcaIsn there a starup option for it?16:17
moz2charlie-tca: how do i change or look at the start up options, i thought this load module commands were that16:18
fbcWhat service needs to be running so that thunar sees thumbnails of the videos in a folder?16:19
charlie-tcahttp://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html#38216:20
charlie-tcagives the start and stop options. I don't know  that commenting the module out works if you have it set to startssl16:20
moz2i should just try starting apache16:20
moz2by its self16:21
moz2see if that disconnects my network16:21
fbcOr that thumbnails get generated16:21
charlie-tcabetter to use the stopssl option from the command line and see what it does16:21
charlie-tcaI would try the options one at a time to see if one causes the disconnect16:22
_Pete_what in the startup script?16:22
moz2yeah thats what im just going to do, had to restart though16:22
charlie-tcafbc: I don't know how to see the thumbnails16:22
moz2_Pete_: no just starting each service one at a time16:23
charlie-tcawhat startup script?16:23
moz2startapache16:23
moz2startmysql, startftp16:23
_Pete_yep16:24
fbcmoz2, a2enmod ssl16:24
moz2whats that16:24
charlie-tcain XAMPP?16:24
fbcmoz2, or just type a2enmod by itself. it ill give you  list of modules to enable16:24
charlie-tcavinnl: how do you see thumbnails in thunar?16:25
fbccharlie-tca, it's usually comes with the apache-utils package16:25
vinnlcharlie-tca, like thumbnails...?16:25
vinnlOh xD16:25
charlie-tcavinnl: yeah16:26
vinnlI think you need a library for that...16:26
vinnlLet me see16:26
charlie-tcafbc wants to know16:26
vinnl!info thunar-thumbnailers16:26
ubottuthunar-thumbnailers (source: thunar-thumbnailers): thumbnailers for Thunar file manager. In component universe, is optional. Version 0.4.1-0ubuntu1 (intrepid), package size 8 kB, installed size 188 kB16:26
vinnlI suppose that's it fbc  :)16:26
fbcvinnl, charlie-tca , awesome16:27
charlie-tcathanks, Vinch16:27
vinnlnp :)16:27
charlie-tcathanks, vinnl16:27
fbcvinnl, charlie-tca , it says it already installed... how do i invoke it or get it running??16:27
vinnlOh hmm... :S16:28
vinnlfbc, not sure if this helps, but you could try running:16:32
vinnl/usr/lib/thunar/thunar-vfs-update-thumbnailers-cache-116:32
vinnl(In a terminal window)16:32
moz2charlie-tca: its started apache, and i can access my web pages, but no database yet of course, just trying that16:34
charlie-tcaand it did not kill the connection, yet?16:35
moz2yeah its fine, sql started as well now16:35
moz2nah it just died lol16:38
charlie-tcaso it is something in mysql causing it16:39
moz2when i ran a terminal command from my php page, a GIMP script16:39
charlie-tcaMaybe it is the script16:39
moz2it seemed to only go wrong when i ran my GIMP script16:39
moz2which is what it did briefly before it went completely wrong earlier16:39
charlie-tcaDid you start php?16:39
moz2it starts automatically16:40
moz2with u start apache16:40
moz2it must have been anyway because my php mysql queries were working16:40
moz2oh, the connection just reconnected itself16:40
charlie-tcasomething in the script then?16:41
moz2nah cant be16:41
moz2the script is nothing to do with the internet, and works fine16:41
fbcmoz2,  if you don't have a2enmod just do " sudo apt-get install apache2.2-common"16:41
moz2fbc: what can i do with it, how can it help ?16:41
fbcvinnl, thanks, but it appears to have done nothing..16:42
vinnlSorry, then I don't know of anything else you could try :(16:42
fbcmoz2, it will allow you to dynamically enable and disable modules within apache without having to go into the conf files16:42
vinnlYou're using a released version of Xubuntu?16:42
fbcvinnl, 8.1016:43
fbcmoz2, so it you need to enable ssl with the proper syntax that script will do it for you automatically because i think there is a general statement int the new apache 2 conf that will load all module in a specific directory16:44
fbcmoz2, so that script just copies and does the proper chmod from the modules repository.16:44
moz2im so confused lol sorry16:45
moz2i just ran lamp/lamp stopssl16:45
moz2which is giving the laptop a heart attack as normal16:45
charlie-tcaif stopping it gives it a heart attack, starting it must also16:46
fbcmoz2, I'm not familiar with those commands your using.. I usually just do /etc/init.d/apache2 stop|start|restart16:46
_Pete_what a hashle, another reason to avoid whole lamp altogether16:46
fbcmoz2, the other command I know for that is "services httpd stop|start|reload|restart"16:47
moz2_Pete_: it is quite useful for me, as im not familar enough to run each thing seperately, not experienced with web servers16:47
fbcmoz2, but you could use "services apache2" in your case also.16:47
moz2i dont know what my laptop is doing, its so unresposive after stopping or starting something to do with lampp16:48
fbcmoz2,  or just "service"  sorry.. remove the s16:48
_Pete_personally, if needed to work with webapps would go with rails or j2ee stuff16:48
_Pete_and postgres db16:48
moz2cant even type anything at the moment, barely any hard drive activity but its not responding16:48
moz2so dissapointing, dont know whats happened to this16:49
moz2fbc: im using the lampp commands16:50
_Pete_is the machine alive at all?16:50
moz2startapache, startmysql, stopssl16:50
moz2its making noises, it does this after u try stopping or starting something with lampp16:50
_Pete_sometimes when local interfaces are down still you can log in via ssh16:50
moz2just cant do anything for ages, dont know what its doing16:50
moz2everything is fine till lampp starts, then everythign goes as slow as hell and breaks constantly till i restart the whole computer and the cycle begins again16:51
moz2_Pete_:  i cant log in remotely either16:52
moz2i just typed in "ifconfig" and it got to "if" and took 3 minutes to display the other characters16:53
moz2but it sounds like its not doing anything, really confused16:53
_Pete_strange, then it's totally fcked up16:53
fbcmoz2, how did you install lampp?? I usually install everything individually...mysql,apache2,php, pop, smtp, webmin everything seperately.16:53
moz2i installed the package XAMPP for linux16:53
moz2http://www.apachefriends.org/en/xampp-linux.html16:54
fbcmoz2, hmm i recommed to install a lamp server from the ubuntu server setup... much easier to deal with and manage...16:54
moz2unfortunately my laptop  is 128mb ram, and 500mhz16:54
moz2lol16:54
moz2it can barely cope with xubuntu16:55
moz2i dont think ubuntu would work too well sadly16:55
fbcmoz2,  the reality I'm running mostly debian server, but the one ubuntu server edition that I'm running I'm very happy with.16:55
geniithe server version works perfectly well without a gui in even as little as 64mb16:55
fbcmoz2, I think that ubuntu server will run with that... however.. try running TOP see what is hogging up your cpu time.16:56
fbcpress "i" once it runs to filter out idle processes16:56
moz2its been thinking about ifconfig for over 5 minutes now lol16:56
moz2so i think thats a way off16:56
moz2what on earth is it doing..16:57
moz2nah i've restarted, its a total joke16:57
moz2do you think i should try ubuntu then?16:57
moz2the ubuntu server edition ?16:58
fbcmoz2, yeah... at least everything will be easier to manage and you won't have unecesary services running like you would with xubuntu.16:59
moz2but wait, i need things like GIMP on the server, can i install that?17:00
fbcmoz2, and considering the low resources your machine has, you really shouldn't be running a GUI.17:00
moz2afterwards, i guess its not included17:00
fbcmoz2, why gimp on your server??17:00
fbcmoz2, what do you need to do with gimp?17:00
moz2the website i am using on the server runs gimp scripts locally on the server17:01
moz2is that a problem17:01
fbcmoz2,  you can convert them to use ffmpeg or someother command-line package?17:01
moz2no its quite a complicated script GIMP specific17:02
fbcmoz2, I've never heard of gimp running without a gui..17:02
moz2yeah it can, thats how im doing it at the moment17:02
moz2GIMP python scripts17:02
moz2with no GUI17:02
fbcmoz2, than you need a machine with more resources. there's no way around it... you really can't stuff a hummer into a smart...17:03
moz2im calling them from a php page17:03
moz2but its been working ok on this one! just, i mean for test purproses its been fine17:03
moz2till everything has gone strrangely wrong17:03
fbcmoz2, if you can get gimp to run without a gui, than you can do it for sure...17:03
moz2yeah u definately can17:04
fbcgimp will install without forcing you to installg nome or xcfe or any of those unless they a dependencies...17:04
moz2can you not run a GUI on the server edition at all ?17:05
fbcmoz2, go for then... your server really does not have the resources for a gui.17:05
fbcyes you can, but it would be defeating the purpose in your case.17:05
moz2can you turn it on and off ?17:05
_Pete_moz2: gui/X is not even installed on default server setup17:05
fbcmoz2, we are trying to get you the most performance out of your resource limited hardware, and than means cutting out un-necessary stuff like X11 and things like that, as they are resource hogs.17:06
moz2i realise that17:06
moz2but for me just testing a website and developing, single user, it was working accetably17:07
moz2acceptably17:07
moz2i mean, could i try reinstalling XAM, is that worth a shot17:08
moz2XAMPP17:08
fbcmoz2, well, you will at least find more support resources with the ubuntu server edition than if your trying to convert xubuntu into a server. You can go directly to the #ubuntu-server channel and get more detailed support there... this channel is really for the xcfe gui support.. although you may find people like me and others that own and operate servers.17:09
moz2yeah i appreciate that17:09
fbcmoz2, np17:12
moz2fbc: ok so i will try the server edition i think, hope its not too out of my depth though17:12
moz2fbc: to back up my database, should i just take a backup from phpmyadmin?17:13
fbcmoz2, yeah for sure17:14
moz2i can just copy my htdocs and my gimp scripts straight out of the folders17:15
moz2its only a small test database so i havent backed it up already17:15
fbcmoz2,  just ftp down to your desktop.. and bam... blow away your server with an ubuntu-server edition than will assist you with the setup...17:16
moz2i dont need to ftp everything i only have a small amount17:17
fbcmoz2, your brave for trying to turn xubuntu into a server.. it's really not meant for that.   My send choice is centos, but I'm really partial to debian distros since it was what I learned on...17:17
fbcmoz2, oops I menat second choice.17:18
moz2im very unexperienced so i will try ubuntu server as i have some poor experience in xubuntu lol17:18
fbcmoz2, Not used to typing on a laptop yet.17:18
charlie-tcafbc: actually nothing to it, you can install any desktop environment on top of server edition to have a GUI to work from17:18
moz2thats handy if i need it17:19
moz2i had to update my kernel to using linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic_2.6.27-11.27_i386.deb to allow my wireless usb stick to be detected, is that going to work on server edition ?17:19
fbccharlie-tca, yes, tru but at least he won't start with unnecessary service on his resource limited machine.. if not he would startup with tracker running, cups, and stuff like that he won't need to run a lamp server17:19
charlie-tcaserver uses a different kernel, not generic17:19
fbccharlie-tca, remember 500nhz and 128 megs of ram17:20
moz2lol its a laptop someone gave me for free17:20
moz2brought in 1999 i think!17:20
charlie-tcayeah, 128MB ram is light. I tried to install jaunty on that, it is slow17:21
moz2lol17:21
moz2everything be a struggle17:21
moz2can forget loading firefox is under 3 minutes17:21
moz2*in17:22
charlie-tcaexactly. and running more than one application will swap out! thus the hard drive activity, it is probably swapping everything17:22
moz2yeah i had guessed that17:22
moz2isnt firefox quite memory hungry too - not good17:22
charlie-tcayes. I use epiphany on the old systems17:24
charlie-tcanot as memory intensive17:24

Slonkiehi is it possible to make some applications automaticly start when i boot into xubuntu?18:43
brandonban6Hi Slonkie , Applications Settings > Settings Manager > Autostart Applications.18:45
Slonkiebut how am i to add something? where do i find appz i installed with apt-get install or trough the package manager?18:47
zoredacheone method is to look at what files came as part of the package.  Usually the binary you start will be in /usr/bin/18:48
zoredacheto see the contents use dpkg -L packagename or look at the 'list files' for the package on http://packages.ubuntu.com/18:49
SlonkieThanks!18:50
Slonkie/usr/bin/ was where they were placed :)18:50
zoredachefreequently you can guess.  So Mousepad, just run 'mousepad', for pidgin run 'pidgin' and so on18:50
TheSheepyou can also grep in /usr/share/applications19:04

SlonkieHi, i was just wondering, as i look upon my CPU usage bar and it says my CPU is only running 1000mhz per core. but actually my CPU is 1900mhz per core, how do i change this?20:49
Javier_BratSlonkie: I suppose governor apllet (plugin)20:49
Javier_Bratknome: I want to run smbmount and one my script without entering a password20:50
knomeSlonkie, are you doing something cpu intensive?20:50
Slonkieno20:50
Slonkienot really.. but i just want it to be 1900mhz when it's plugged in and 1000mhz when it's on battery20:50
knomeSlonkie, try to and see if the cpu runs 1900 then.20:50
Slonkiehow would you suggest i try doing some load on the cpu?20:51
knomeSlonkie, there's no real reason to force it running 1900. it should automatically, when you do something cpu intensive20:51
knomeermm..20:51
knomeSlonkie, 'ls -R /*' should be fine.20:54
knomeSlonkie, if not, open two terminals and run simultaneously.20:54
Javier_Bratwell, sudoers working :) don't know how is it possible, but it works xD21:02
