fta* - Welcome to barjavel.freenode.net in Paris, FR, EU.11:11
gnomefreakSo, this is going to be an unpopular change, I think we need to make it clobber11:13
gnomefreakas well.11:13
gnomefreakthat is always a good sign when upstream says that11:13
gnomefreak:)11:13
gnomefreaknow i need to find the PGO bug in lp but i guess it can wait11:15
gnomefreak[reed]: is it likely that mozilla 418866 will get patched for 3.0.8? or is it not a security risk so maybe only 3.5/3.6 asac you either since you both know upstream11:20
ubottuMozilla bug 418866 in Build Config "turn on profile-guided optimization on linux" [Normal,New] http://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41886611:20
[reed]not for 3.0.x, no11:20
gnomefreakok didnt think so thanks11:21
asaceven if mozilla does it for the all-in-one-firefox build it probabyl wont solve the xulrunner split problem11:29
asacat least not obviously11:29
gnomefreakasac: didnt we release a java plugin that works on 64bit procs?11:34
gnomefreakif so what is the name i cant find the free version at all thinking that was it11:34
BUGabundognomefreak: I think we didn't11:36
BUGabundoI'm still having to run the 32 bits for the browser applet11:36
[reed]yeah, ubuntu is going to need some special sauce for PGO11:37
gnomefreakbug 9935211:41
ubottuLaunchpad bug 99352 in firefox-3.0 "feisty+firefox+amd64+java=segfault" [Undecided,Invalid] https://launchpad.net/bugs/9935211:41

asacerr 3.5 ;)11:47

asacjust so i know when we have to fix this ;)11:47
BUGabundoasac: I upstream it11:50

BUGabundook so now Fonts DPI is all marked as WontFix11:52
BUGabundowill this be milestone for Koala11:52
asacBUGabundo: not all11:52
BUGabundoonce it shows on LP?11:52
[reed]asac: no, but even if it was, ubuntu would need to do some special stuff to deal with xulrunner and firefox being separate11:52
[reed]as we discussed before11:52
BUGabundolibgnome is the expection11:52
asacBUGabundo: we wont fixed them for jaunty .... and kept libgnome part open ... which is the backout11:52
asac[reed]: yeah right. just wanted to know if there is kind of urgency to get this ready for 3.511:52
[reed]I don't think it'll be ready for 3.511:53
BUGabundowill this be milestone for Koala once it shows on LP?11:53
asace.g. if you would start doing it i would certainly invest the time required to get it done somehow for xul11:53
[reed]I could talk to beltzner about making it a priority11:53
[reed]but we're pretty far along in the cycle11:53
[reed]just depends on how much work it would involve11:53
[reed]and PGO breaks stuff11:53
asac[reed]: please keep me in the loop in case this comes up again11:53
asace.g. dont do it like after RC1 ;)11:53
[reed]yeah11:53
asacbut well. we have almost one more cycle before 3.5 will be default11:54
asacso if you want to do that as a fast action we can do it aftwards here too11:54
asacassuming that 3.5 gets ever released ;)11:54
[reed]hehe11:55
asaci remember the talks about making "quick release cycles" and no need to get in features after beta because next release will be soon enough11:57
asacseems this was sacrificed ... i assume to some degree because of the new competition that made some new features necessary ;)11:57
asacbut yeah. i think 3.5 is a big step again ... and even in quite short time still11:58
asacjust get it out ;)11:58
[reed]yeah12:02
BUGabundoeheh12:02
[reed]that's why it was renamed12:02
BUGabundoso will 3.5 be in by default?12:02
[reed]3.1 grew too large12:02
[reed]so, it was renamed to 3.5 ;)12:03
asac[reed]: thats good. but dont take that as an excuse to wait longer ;)12:03
asacBUGabundo: can you please not forward bugs?12:04
asacat leat not the pixel size bug12:04
gnomefreaki cant find it at all. i thought icedtea in repos was at version 712:05
asacgnomefreak: we have an amd64 java plugin12:05

asaci think the removed that warning again12:23
asacwhich is great imo12:23
BUGabundoI got it a sec later12:23
asacmaybe they could make that an option12:23
BUGabundogconf ?12:23
asacbut better not enabled if there is no choice for that12:23
BUGabundoor some reset option on the profile gnomefreak?12:23
asacBUGabundo: afaik. there is no option12:24
asacwhich made it annoying before12:24
* gnomefreak running late now :( i have a meeting to go to and i should be back after it12:48
BUGabundoasac: I rather see 3G nm support fix the sustend / resume prob13:08
BUGabundoits there (with old nm) but NEVER connects13:08
BUGabundoI remember and enven older version would do it with manual /etc/init.d/NM restart13:09
asacwe wont fix old nm13:09

BUGabundonot old NM,... just old version upate13:09

mbanahi people, so i'm using 3.1 (i think) i need some addons such as downloadthemall20:11
mbanadoes it work?20:11
mbanai've more examples of broken fontconfig.20:22
mbanawhere shall i post them20:22
Jazzvambana: if it's not compatible with 3.1, it might work, but you need to disable extension's version check. To do that go to "about:config" in Firefox, right click -> New -> Boolean, set "preference name" to extensions.checkCompatibility, and boolean value to false. It will install the extension, even if it doesn't pass the version check, but it still might not work. If that's the case, then you need to wait for the developers20:22
Jazzva to update the extension to support FF 3.120:22
Mook_sbJazzva: umm, it's probably better to disable compat checking via nightly tester tools20:25
Mook_sbfor one thing, you can do it per-extension instead of globally.20:25
asacmbana: if you have screenshots show them please20:25
JazzvaMook_sb: I didn't know for that. Thanks :)20:25
mbanahttp://yfrog.com/56screenshotpp20:26
mbanajust look at the firefox compared to the ones on the top left - helvetica - and bottom left - arial.  the different is huge, the firefox is getting no hinting20:27
mbanahttps://help.ubuntu.com/8.10/add-applications/C/add-applications-introduction.html20:28
mbanathat's the page20:28
mbana... someone please confirm20:39
asacmbana: i dont have those fonts20:45
mbanafor what?20:45
asacare they really better than what we ship?20:45
asacarial and helvetica20:45
asacfor me it looks good20:46
mbanasorry?  i'm lost.  with a 3.1/3.0 you get the screen on the right.  god knows what font is being used, it's lacking hinting which is the problem20:46
asacmbana: yeah. try to not allow pages to select its own fonts20:47
asacin preferences20:47
asacthat probably helps20:47
asacconfirmed?20:47
mbanai actualyl prefer for them to select their own fonts20:47
mbanait's a bug20:47
asacmbana: udo ln -s /etc/fonts/conf.avail/10-autohint.conf /etc/fonts/conf.d/20:48
asacsudo20:48
asacmbana: did it help?21:00
mbanado i need to restar the browser?21:00
asacmbana: do that to be sure21:00
mbanano it didn't21:01
asacmbana: so its arial?21:02
asacfc-match Arial21:02
mbanaarial.ttf: "Arial" "Normal"21:02
asacdpkg -S arial.ttf21:02
asacso its microsoft font i guess21:03
asacisnt that font inferior?21:03
mbanait's from Vista21:03
mbananot that's not the point - i think the fonts are the same.  look at the pics from TB, they render correctly, in firefox they're messed up21:04
asacnot everything that comes from vista is good :-P21:04
mbanaanyhow i'm baffled21:04
mbanathis strange21:04
mbanalol21:04
mbanaMS made Consolas21:04
asacmbana: why do you think that tbird uses the same font?21:04
asacso i had ttf-liberation21:04
asacwasnt really great21:04
asacbut looked better imo21:04
mbanabecause i've sent the fonts, look closely at font selewction part21:04
asacmbana: i would say that tbird doesnt really treat fontconfig properly21:05
mbanayes it does.  FF doesn't21:05
asaccheck out ffox 321:05
asacerr tbird 321:05
mbanaif i change something in .fonts.conf it takes immediate affect in TB21:06
asacmbana: so can you tweak fonts.conf in such a way that it looks as bad as ffox?21:06
asacif we have that we probably would know what exactly is missing21:06
asacmbana: please check21:07
mbanano, i'm saying FF doesn't obey the rules, because if i change something in firefox everything in the desktop including TB updates itself.  i'm puzzled, though, as to what font is being used on that site.21:07
asacpango-view -t "This is test text" --font="Arial 10.666px"21:07
asacpango-view -t "This is test text" --font="Arial 10.666px" --backend=cairo21:07
asacpango-view -t "This is test text" --font="Arial 10.666px" --backend=xft21:07
asacboth combinations21:07
asacmbana: are you taking about ffox 3 or 3.1?21:07
mbana3.1 the packge you recommended21:08
asacffox 3.1 is the one that should be ok21:08
asacyeah21:08
asacffox 3 doesnt take font changes until you rescale once21:08
asace.g. ctrl-+ + ctrl--21:08
mbanahttp://yfrog.com/74screenshot1mp21:10
mbanano difference i can tell.  again look at the firefox window21:11
mbanado you have a default firefox install?21:12
asacmbana: does it look better in pango-view?21:14
mbanano, they all look the same.  don't they?21:14
mbanaok i'll try getting rid of Arial and Helvetica21:18
mbana$ fc-match Arial21:20
mbanaLiberationSans-Regular.ttf: "Liberation Sans" "Regular"21:20
mbanahow funny21:20
mbana$ fc-match Helvetica21:21
mbanan019003l.pfb: "Nimbus Sans L" "Regular"21:21
mbanawhat is that and where is that from?21:21
mbanais that bitmap font?21:21
mbanaok, i'm lost21:28
mbanaany more thoughts21:47
mbanacould it be something with the weights of the font in the .css21:59
mbanai get this error; TypeError: $("contentAreaContextMenu") is null after following your steps Jazzva22:51
mbanaXML Parsing Error: undefined entity22:51
mbanaLocation: chrome://browser/content/browser.xul22:51
mbanaLine Number 34, Column 1:<window id="main-window"22:51
mbana^22:51
Jazzvambana: huh? you get it when?22:53
mbanawhen starting FF22:53
Jazzvaumm.. that shouldn't happen. It's probably an error in the extension22:54
mbanaFF refuses to start now :(22:54
Jazzvahas that happened before installing downthemall?22:54
Jazzvawe'll fix it :)22:54
mbanano i just did what you said22:54
mbanathen restarted22:54
Jazzvaand did you install downthemall?22:54
mbanano, it's from FF 3.022:54
Jazzvahuh... then you probably accidentally changed also some other property...22:55
mbanawhat now?22:55
Jazzvadoes anyone know where FF keeps it's about:config settings?22:55
Jazzvambana: try running with "firefox --safe-mode" from the terminal and see if it's working...22:56
Jazzvasorry, it's "firefox -safe-mode"22:57
Jazzvaok, found the file22:57
Mook_sbJazzva: prefs.js in the profile (~/.firefox/*.default/)22:57
JazzvaMook_sb: thanks22:58
mbanai got two versions running mind you22:58
mbana3.0 and 3.122:58
Jazzvambana: ok, does the other one work?22:59
mbanayes 3.022:59
Jazzvaok, I guess you could copy prefs.js from firefox 3.0 to 3.1, and then see if it works. just let me check23:00
mbanammm same error23:02
Jazzvambana: then it's something else that caused the error...23:02
JazzvaI think that about:config only makes changes to prefs.js...23:03
Jazzva(does anyone know if that's not the case?)23:03
mbanacool it worked in safemode23:12
asac_what did he change23:12
asac_?23:13
asac_mbana: ?23:13
Jazzvaasac_: extensions.checkCompatibility... but it seems that wasn't the source of the problem, since he later used prefs.js from different, 3.0 profile, and the problem was still there23:13
asac_i think it changes user_prefs.js23:14
asac_ok its prefs.js23:14
mbanaok i'll try again23:14
asac_extensions.checkCompatibility is definitly the cause for this23:15
asac_at least its really likely that you get parse issues because of that23:15
asac_mbana: echo $LANG23:16
mbanaen_GB.UTF-823:16
asac_if its not en_US then the langpacks are the reason23:16
asac_yeah23:16
asac_set it to en_US.UTF-823:16
mbanaso downloadthemall won't work because of that?23:16
asac_any extension that is forced could be the cause23:17
asac_my current bet is that its a lang pack23:17
asac_hence use en_US23:17
mbanayes you're right23:17
mbanaFirefox (en-GB) not compat23:17
asac_that makes sense23:17
mbanawhat shall i do23:18
mbanaalso xulrunner is en-gb23:19
asac_yes both23:19
asac_you cn disable them explicitly23:19
mbanathe world should just adopt british english23:19
asac_if you cannot live with en_US elsewhere ;)23:19
asac_nah ;)23:19
asac_only after UK adopts the EUR ;)23:19
mbanaReferenceError: nsBrowserStatusHandler is not defined23:20
mbanabut it loads23:21
asac_mbana: you can go to extensions.rdf ... search for the en-GB entries there and add NS1:userDisabled="true" attribute to xml23:21
asac_but well. in the end you shouldnt force extensions23:22
asac_prod extension authors to support ffox 3.623:22
asac_mbana: is it because of recent ffox 3.5 reversioning?23:22
asac_mbana: if so just manually fix the maxVersion in extensions.rdf23:22
asac_instead of checkCompatibility hack23:23
=== asac_ is now known as asac
asacmbana: so back to fonts. pango-view almost certainly does the right thing23:26
mbanaasac: yes it does23:27
asac22:14 < asac> mbana: does it look better in pango-view?23:27
asac22:14 < mbana> no, they all look the same.  don't they?23:27
mbanaok i misunderstood you.  btw, error will popping up when i restart firefox even thought it's been removed from the about:config23:28
asacmbana: yeah. the extensions are now probably forced or something23:28
asaci mean the problem is a chicken hen issue23:29
asacrestart firefox using en_US at least once after you disabled eextension check23:29
asacchicken egg ;)23:29
mbanawhat's the solution23:29
asac00:29 < asac> restart firefox using en_US at least once after you disabled eextension check23:30
asacalso ensure that ffox ix actually stopped23:31
asacwhen you get such errors it can always happen that a dangling process is left23:31
asacwhich causes bad stuff23:31
asackill all firefox processes to be sure23:31
ftaback23:32
asacwelcome back fta ;)23:33
asacnot sure where and how long you went ;)23:33
ftahm, bad timing to help me get the 3G working in my netbook i assume?23:33
asacfta: its late23:33
asacfta: so does the udev probing fail or what?23:34
ftaalways hal23:35
asacfta: yeah23:36
asacfta: so now your modem isnt detected anymore?23:36
ftai think it is23:37
asacwhat makes you believe that its detected?23:37
asacfta: ok. lets start. what are the symptoms23:37
asaci probably confuse what you said with something else ;)23:37
ftaunable to connect23:37
ftatalking of my netbook, not about my laptop23:38
asacfta: can you post the syslog when it detects your modem?23:38
asacfta: is the netbook up to date at all?23:38
fta_nanoi'm doing an update right now23:38
asacproblem is that latest NM doesnt accept "only hal" anymore23:39
asacok23:39
asacfta: its huawei?23:39
fta_nanothe dongle? yes23:39
asacok. so two things. if it really doesnt detect your modem you need to bump --reply in the script i showed you really really high23:39
mbanai take it i can't use downloadthemall for with ff 3.1 then23:39
asacmanually running the modem detector worked for you ... so it really should be the reason23:40
asacmbana: could be23:40
asacmbana: bug the extension author23:40
asacffox 3.1 is already in late betas23:40
asacits time to update extensions23:40
fta_nanoasac, should i revert my pppd/options changes to default?23:41
asacfta: second: you huawei modem goes in bad shape when you probe the unsolicit serial port23:41
asacfta_nano: yes. reset those to defaults23:41
asacfta_nano: only enable debug i guess23:41
asacfta_nano: http://paste.ubuntu.com/136336/23:42
asacthose commits might be what you need23:42
asacbut thats mostly for replugging23:42
asacand so on23:42
mbanaasac: so, what font was being used on your machine for that site i gave23:42
asacthe first connect should still work23:42
asacmbana: the one you got by fc-match Arial i guess23:43
asacttf-liberation ;)23:43
mbanai removed it23:44
mbanastill using some strange font23:44
asacmbana: nimbus is the very last fallback i think23:45
mbanayes, what font is that and where is it located23:45
asacliberation should be better afaik23:45
asacmbana: dpkg -S FILENAME23:45
asacfinds the package that a file is shipped in23:45
mbanathat's nice. thanks23:45
asacso use that on n019003l.pfb23:45
asacseems ghostscript fonts ;)23:46
mbanaok i use TeX23:46
mbanaprobably why23:46
asaci am pretty sure that gsfonts23:46
asacis installed on most systems23:46
fta_nanoasac, yeah, those commits look nice23:46
asacthat why i said its the veriy last fallback23:46
asacfta_nano: yeah. its just after i took the cut ... but i really think that your modem not being detected by udev is a big problem now23:47
asacfta_nano: hence fix that ... bump --delay in the udev rule to really huge value23:47
asacand hope23:47
asac/lib/udev/rules.d/77-nm-probe-modem-capabilities.rules23:47
fta_nanook, reverted options to default except debug, + http://paste.ubuntu.com/136342/23:47
asacuse --delay 1000023:47
asacand reboot23:47
fta_nanowaiting for the upgrade to complete now23:48
asacand then pray to god that your thing is detected by udev ;)23:48
asacor well. if it still isnt we need to do something ;)23:48
asacmbana: if you have a better font we could use for Arial let us know ;)23:48
asaci mean ... one of the fonts in the archives23:49
asacwhy not use Bitstream Sans for it?23:49
mbanaLiberation is actually a good free replacement.  no BS is too wide for most people23:49
mbanaMS make very good fonts, there's no lie to it23:49
ftahttp://www.stefanoforenza.com/get-androids-fonts-on-ubuntu-how-to/23:49
asacmbana: yeah. so ttf-liberation was the right thing23:49
asacmbana: yeah. i have no clue why the ms fonts are not properly hinted. i thought they were not "good enough" for native hinting ... hence i suggested the 10-autohint fontconfig thing23:50
mbanawow! the android fonts look good23:51
asacdid MS actually make Arial?23:51
asaci thought they bought them ;)23:51
asacthe hinting looks bad in the result23:52
mbanai'm not sure, but it seems they hire people to do it, in some occasions they bought the fonts, as in, palatino23:52
asacmbana: so install ttf-droid23:53
asacits in the archive ;)23:53
asachmm ... its dfsg so some parts are probably stripped23:53
asacyeah droid sans looks good23:56
asacmbana: just add that to the Arial entry23:56
asacin /etc/fonts/conf.d/30-metric-aliases.conf23:57
asac        <!-- Microsoft -->23:57
asac        <alias binding="same">23:57
asac          <family>Arial</family>23:57
asac          <accept>23:57
asac          <family>Droid Sans</family>23:57
asac          <family>Liberation Sans</family>23:57
asac          <family>Albany</family>23:57
asac          <family>Albany AMT</family>23:57
asac          </accept>23:57
asac        </alias>23:57
asacsorry for the flood23:57
asacyeah ... so now even me is happy ;)23:57
asacfc-match "Arial"23:57
asacDroidSans.ttf: "Droid Sans" "Regular"23:57
ftaasac, in the nm applet, if i disable wireless, will it disable wifi and 3g or just wifi?23:58
mbanahmmm the android font is very nice, it reminds me of segiou23:59
asacfta: thats only wifi there23:59
asaci will use it as default for now for arial ... maybe i will try it as default in general for sans et al23:59
