Mat-Cauthonum... for some reason, when i connect my external hdd it's called sdc/sdc1 now, when earlier it was always called sdb... anyone have an idea why that could be the case?17:07
charlie-tcaDid you add a drive or usb device?17:07
zoredachemaybe sdb is being used by some other device17:07
Mat-Cauthoni don't have any device called sdb at the moment, no17:07
Mat-Cauthoni did disconnect the hdd while it was still running before though, was messing around while trying to get automount to work17:09
zoredachethat probably would be it... The kernel still thinks sdb is being used.  Reboot, and it will probably be better17:09
Mat-Cauthonmmmh... okay, i'll give it a try :]17:10

Mat-Cauthonhmm, it's back to sdb/sdb1 now17:15
zoredache!ask17:15
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)17:15

kpomeroyMy top and bottom panel has disappeared and I can't open the panel setting in settings manager. What should I do to restore it?17:16
zoredacheonly the top panel has disappeared, or all of them have disappeared?17:17
Mat-Cauthontry alt+f2 and enter xfce4-panel17:17
kpomeroyall of them, and when I click on the panel button in the setting manager nothing happens17:17
kpomeroyThere is an error when I type that command. I get: "he command "xfce-panel" failed to run:17:18

Mat-Cauthondon't forget the 4 ;)17:19
kpomeroyok that worked thats so much17:19
Mat-Cauthonwhat did you do before it disappeared?17:19
kpomeroyI don't know, I had been idle for a long time in hibernation mode and I came back and the panel disappeared.17:20
kpomeroyI think this happened once before and  I just reinstalled the distro, I didn't want to do that this time17:21

chewitcan anyone tell me why xubuntu uses Thunderbird over Claw Mail17:37
chewitI would have thought claw mail would be better, since its GTK, uses Tango theme, its much faster and lighter, has the same functionality17:38
charlie-tcaProbably because in the past, claws-mail was Sylpheed unstable17:38

charlie-tcaSlor: don't know enough about using proxy18:28

If i try to save the new configuration to the X-Server configuration file, there is a Error "Unable to create new X config backup file '/etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup'." What can i do?19:08
charlie-tcaUse "sudo" to create the new file?19:09
Talarionsry im a noob. I dont used the terminal for that. i try to change it with the graphical surface.19:11
charlie-tcaYou won't be able to backup or save any file in /etc/X11 unless you do it as root. To do it with the graphical interface, try hitting F2, type "gksu thunar", hit enter19:13
charlie-tcaThis gives you a root copy of Thunar and if you click to edit a file in it, you are editing as root19:14

ubottuKasm279: Hi! I'm #xubuntu's favorite infobot, you can search my brain yourself at http://ubottu.com/factoids.cgi - Usage info: http://wiki.ubuntu.com/UbuntuBots21:29
zoredacheOG1: I was just wanted to know if it was less then 256, which it isn't.  The installer does lots of error checking, if it completed, you should have a good copy of the OS.  A reinstall shouldn't be necessary21:31
OG1basajaun: It should run like a dream, but I don't know why, it don't.21:32
zoredacheI suspect I would run memtest86 in this case, at let to through at least once pass, just to verify your RAM is good.21:33
zoredacheI suspect I would also try booting to safe mode, and just doing random things for a bit and see if it locks up there21:34
OG1zoredache: Ok, i will try.21:34

zoredacheKasm279: what release are you looking for  hardy, intrepid?21:38
charlie-tcaThats because you add repositories to the /etc/apt/sources.list21:39

Kasm279yes21:42
Kasm279and the ubuntu-desktop package21:42
zoredachewell if you did something weird, and some how trashed it, you may need to repair your /etc/apt/sources.list  here is mine http://pastebin.com/f1eba20ba21:44
Kasm279can i install the things from the cd's?21:45
tomsdalecharlie-tca: sorry my kde crashed - envy is the installer script for nvidia cards?21:46
zoredachewhat do you mean?  Are you asking if you can use a cd as a source of packages?   If you have an alternate-cd then yes21:46
Kasm279i have the standard cd......21:46
zoredacheyou would do an 'apt-cdrom add' while the disk is in to let apt index the disk21:46
zoredacheI don't believe that works for the livecds...21:47
Kasm279can i add it thru the scorces editor (i saw a  "add cd" button?21:48
Kasm279)?**21:48
Kasm279O_O?21:48
zoredacheI think the add button would only work if it was an alternate cd...21:48

ubottuPowerPC.  Formerly used by Apple for the Macintosh line of computers. Variants are now used in popular gaming consoles. PPC was a fully supported Ubuntu architecture up to and including edgy. It is now a community port, see https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PowerPCFAQ21:59

Dante123                       hi all, installed xubuntu on a sony vaio rx550.  Under windows there is a special driver that controls the fans so they dont run so high.  In xubuntu they are running at full speed all the time.  I have googled various pages that talk about setting up lm-sensors etc. to control fan.  If/when I get this working- how do I make it permanent or does lm-sensor remember the settings???   ____________22:19
knomeDante123, most possibly it will remember then automatically.22:23
BlueAidanalright, so I went back to hardy because of the problems I was having with the intel xorg driver. now I have no sound.22:27
BlueAidanalsamixer shows valid info22:27
BlueAidanif I mute/unmute stuff I can hear a pop22:28
dj_bushidocan anybody help me remove a usplash theme?22:43
dj_bushidoI installed one and its buggy and crashy. I am currently in Fedora to try and fix it.22:43
dj_bushidoi can remove the theme, but the kernel needs reconfigured, and that's a problem because I can't execute inside the drive.22:49
dj_bushidowhat I need to do is "dpkg-reconfigure linux-image-$(uname -r)"22:50
dj_bushidoonly I am on my Fedora machine22:55
zoredachedj_bushido: do you have the ubuntu filesystem mounted?23:03
dj_bushidoyeah.23:04
zoredachedj_bushido: where you not able to boot into safe mode?23:05
zoredacheanyway, you might try running a command like chroot /mountpoint /bin/bash where mountpoint is the folder you have the ubuntu filesystem mounted23:06
zoredacheif that works, then do a 'update-initramfs -u23:07
dj_bushidoi'm getting a lot of "cannot create /dev/null: Permission denied" errors23:11
dj_bushidoeven with su23:11
zoredachewhen are you getting these errors?23:12
dj_bushidoafter the chroot, running the "update" as root is generating the errors23:13
zoredachetand you have the full command 'update-initramfs -u' ?23:13
zoredacheit probably would be easier if you booted into safe mode....23:14
dj_bushidowill try safe mode. that will let me run startup-manager, right?23:15
zoredachestartup manager?23:15
dj_bushidonvm. will try the command from safe mode, xubuntu.23:16
dj_bushidog2g23:16
zoredacheif you are using grub, you could also simply hit 'e' o edit the boot command23:16
zoredacheremove the 'splash'23:16
