shadowkllrhaha i just had the same thing happen01:06
KleviCan i fix that at all??01:07
shadowkllri'm not sure about 8.1, i''ve had some problems and reverted back to 8.0401:07

KleviNo, just with the prop. drivers01:08
Klevithe standad ones worked, sort of01:08
Klevibut the second i enabled OpenGl it died01:08
Kleviso id have to reinstall01:08
shadowkllri was getting that message when i first installed 8.04 again, but letting adept do it's thing took care of it01:08
Kleviits possible that you had some effects enabled by default that used opengl01:09
shadowkllrand i no longer get the message01:09
Kleviwhich wont work properly ever for me01:09
shadowkllrperhaps01:09
Klevibut theres nothing you can think of that i can change or reconfigure through console to fix this01:10

p_quarlesWine can run *some* DirectX games; and a few more unreliably :) (see winehq.com for details)01:19
Klevity01:19
KleviIll look into that later01:19
shadowkllri think wine can support directx 9, but does not fully support 10 yet01:19
shadowkllrit's hit or miss i'm told01:19
Klevi9 is good01:20
shadowkllrbut that's why i run windows too lol01:20
KleviIm only running PSObb01:20
Kleviwhich even on this thing01:20
p_quarlesright; it does support 9, but that doesn't mean *all* DX9 games will run01:20
Kleviruns pretty well01:20
shadowkllryeah p_quarles is right, i re-read what i wrote, didn't want to give the impression that all dx9 games are supported, but it's more than dx 10 games01:21
KleviIm not in any rush or dependant upon playing that game under Kubuntu01:21
KleviBut01:21
KleviIt'd be nice01:21
shadowkllrso back to my question if anyone knows(i had this kubuntu box setup a long time ago as my lampp server, but don't know the most efficient way to do it) should i install the lamp components individually, or is there a package that includes them all?01:22
KleviWhat IS Lampp01:23
shadowkllrapache, mysql, php, perl(orpython depending on some peoples pref)01:23
KleviSorry, Im a noob to allot of things01:23
KleviThats awesome01:24
ufuk_kshadowkllr: sudo tasksel lamp-server01:24
ufuk_kthis command should install lamp stack I think.01:25
shadowkllrk i'll try01:25
Dragnslcrshadowkllr- there might be a metapackage that installs them, but it's not all that difficult to install three or four packages yourself01:25
ufuk_kshadowkllr: it will takes time, but it does not hangs, just wait for it.01:25
shadowkllrno i know, drag, i just didn't know what was more efficient/preferred, this is a fresh install and i was just curious as it's been some time since i did that01:26
shadowkllrklevi, what's even more awesome is that i can ssh into this box from my phone or laptop where ever i go and change things as needed =P01:27
Kleviperty cool01:27
Klevireminds me oof my ipod touch01:27
shadowkllrand once i have ssh tunnel going (on my laptop), i can tunnel any port through the single port that I have open, and it's all encrypted01:27
KleviSweet01:28
KleviI can hardly understand the workings of it, but i know what you said in a general sense01:28
shadowkllri used to use vnc on it's normal unencrypted port back in the day and found out it was an effective way to get brute forced =P01:28
Klevi.. brute forced?01:29
Dragnslcrshadowkllr- all you'd get is a metapackage that does something like install the apache, PHP, and MySQL packages, so it wouldn't be any different from installing each package individually01:29
shadowkllrmeaning that my vnc port was "showing" and someone was able to sniff out my password and information flowing between it......vnc is a remote desktop application01:30
KleviI know what VNS is, I use it onmy ipod01:30
KleviDamn01:31

AdrickHi folks.  I was hoping someone would be able to help me with a screen resolution problem I'm having with my NVIDIA card.  I haven't had any luck with the solutions I've found online so far.07:36
beth__I've got a problem with knetworkmanager.  It starts connecting to our wireless, then it just gives up.  It works on other Kubuntu laptops, but not on this one.  It worked yesterday though.08:17
beth__I tried a USB network adapter, but it does the same thing.08:17
beth__Also tried the GNOME nm-applet; same thing.08:17
jussi01beth__: you sure you are using the correct encryption?08:22
beth__jussi01: Tried it with WPA and with no encryption.  Yesterday it worked fine with both.  Today: nothing.08:23
beth__It doesn't even get as far as asking for the key.08:23
jussi01hrm... weird08:23
beth__I thought it was the wireless card so I bought a D-Link USB adapter, but it has the same symptoms.08:24
jussi01heh, that put my question out about the wireless hw switch being on ...08:25
jussi01check that anyway08:25
jussi01oh hang on, I remember whats wrong08:25
beth__Checked the switches.  The adapter doesn't even have one...08:26
jussi01beth__: go make a new connection - click next instead of save and connect - you have to put the password in there iirc..08:26
jussi01it wont prompt for the password... I had that a while back.08:27
beth__OK.  Will try.  May cut out briefly, but I have a cat5 cable if all else fails.08:28
beth__jussi01: Where is "new connection"?  I tried a bunch of options, but none have a Next button.08:32
jussi01beth__: right click the icon in the tray, then new connection -> choose card (wlan0?)08:32
jussi01then there is a dialogue08:33
jussi01choose the network, then click next08:33
beth__jussi01: This is knetworkmanager.  I can't see any new connection option.08:33

[-Haza-]Morning folks. Im trying to get a drawing tablet working on Kubuntu 8.10 KDE 4.210:18
=== rjb is now known as drbobb
[-Haza-]Its USB and ive plugged it in. It seems to have picked up okay as the mouse works on the table. But the pen on the other hand does not. How can i go about debugging this to find out what the problem is?10:19
drbobbhello, adept-updater has a habit of killing my xserver, anyone else observed that problem?10:20
drbobbrunning hardy + nvidia driver10:20
[-Haza-]Ive done some research and it looks like i can use a special driver... But im not sure what one i need10:25
[-Haza-]http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=7537710:25
ActionParsnip1[-Haza-]: nice find, get it compiled10:29
ActionParsnip1[-Haza-]: with compiles, you will need to compile if you upgrade our kernel10:29
[-Haza-]ActionParsnip1: woah. Im afraid thats waaaaay beyond me :(10:31
ActionParsnip1[-Haza-]: you will compile the source and it will work10:31
ActionParsnip1[-Haza-]: if you get a new kernel, the driver will be compiled for the OLD kernel, so you will need to compile the app once more10:31
[-Haza-]I see. How might i go about recompiling this source code for my Kernal (javac won't work here im guessing! :D )10:32
[-Haza-]ActionParsnip1: I don't know how useful this is either http://www.revis.co.uk/site/?q=node/5810:34
ActionParsnip1[-Haza-]: thats compiling a kernel with the new module for the device10:37
lokaiWhere can I edit the autostart utilities in KDE? I'm not talking about adding my own scripts in ~/.kde/Autostart10:46
ActionParsnip1!bum10:47
ubottuBoot options: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BootOptions - To add/remove startup services, you can use the package 'bum', or update-rc.d - To add your own startup scripts, use /etc/rc.local - See also !grub and !dualboot - Making a boot floppy: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto/BootFloppy - Also see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SmartBootManagerHowto10:47
ActionParsnip1!startup10:47
ubottuTo make programs start up automatically when you log into your KDE session, run all programs that you want to be started and close all other programs, then select 'Save Session' in the K menu. Alternatively, create a !symlink to the wanted program in ~/.kde/Autostart - See !boot for starting non-interactive programs at boot10:47
lokaiActionParsnip1: I'm talking about KDE-specific services (like Kmix, katapult) that load automatically10:49
ActionParsnip1lokai: i'd create the symlink in Autostart like you said earlier10:52
ActionParsnip1simple yet effective10:52
lokaiActionParsnip1: I don't want to add my own scripts, I want to edit the ones that currently are run. These are not located in ~/.kde/Autostart, ActionParsnip110:56
lokaiAt least ones like kmix, konversation, katapult are not.10:56
ActionParsnip1lokai: i'd maybe ask in #kde too10:58

etfbWhen my wife's laptop resumes from hibernation or suspension, about half the time it can no longer find the wireless internet card.  How do I kick it so it realises it's there?12:00
dr_willishalf the time? thats odd. :)12:01
dr_willisnorm,ally its allways or never12:01
etfbdr_willis: It's usually fine.  And when I had the laptop (she always gets my hand-me-downs) it was just about always fine.  This is Hardy, BTW.12:03
etfbIs there a way to tell it to explicitly deactivate the wifi on suspend/hibernate, and restart on resume?12:04
etfbOr a way to just send 10,000 volts through it to make it pay for its evilness?12:04
dr_williswireless has always been a toss up.12:08

Larufthi, i'm trying to set up virtualbox on kubuntu jaunty,  seems i am missing the source files to build a kernel19:49
brad_Laruft: I'm going to recommend kvm19:50
Laruft"Error! Your kernel source for kernel 2.6.28-9-generic cannot be found at19:50
Laruft/lib/modules/2.6.28-9-generic/build or /lib/modules/2.6.28-9-generic/source19:50

brad_it's much faster19:50

brad_it's not a kvm, it's called kvm19:51
Laruftbrad, link?19:51

brad_sudo apt-get install kvm virt-manger19:51
xtgeneralisation is EASY19:51
Laruftxen is better?19:52
brad_xen is the best19:52
brad_but kvm is catching up, and for the ease I'd go with kvm19:52
Laruftdo any allow direct access to physical partition, so i can dual boot as well as run a system inside linux19:52
brad_in fact I've got a debian running 2008, and 2 2003 under kvm19:52
Larufti'm not a n00b i'll look into xen if u think it's better19:53
brad_I'm not a n00b and xen kick my ass19:54

brad_but xen takes a custom kernel and all19:54
Laruftit's the kernel thing I'm a bit stumped on.. i have the dkms package.. but no source/modules19:55
brad_I really don't recommend it, you have to  install the kernel and then boot from it, and the vm's are hard to create and even harder to debug19:55
SAngeli hi, I need help with migrating my KMail from one PC to another. I moved the entire /Mail folder to my new PC but I need to know which files to cp over to my new .kde profile. Any idea?19:55
brad_with kvm, there is a gui if you want to use it19:55
brad_but with kvm or xen you must have a chip that supports it19:55
brad_and kvm is now part of the kernel19:56
brad_I spent a week trying to get 2003 under xen, and it just would not run, I spent about 20 mins with kvm.19:57
brad_http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kernel-based_Virtual_Machine19:58
LaruftI'll try kvm, cheers19:58
brad_lol19:59
Laruftvirtualbox seems to be the popular one tho19:59
Laruftjust reading up on xen.. and like,, hmm wtf.19:59
Laruftlost me on page 1 lol19:59
brad_i run virtual box with 2003 server under it, and it was pretty slow compaired to kvm19:59
brad_all of my servers are now running virtualized under kvm.20:00
brad_s/run/ran20:00
brad_Laruft: what distro are you running ?20:01
Laruftkubuntu jaunty20:01
brad_k, the kvm in lenny is a little old and you will see much improvment if you run the kvm from testing, but I'm sure jaunty is pretty new20:02
brad_the think I love most about kvm is it redirects the output via vnc20:03
brad_s/think/thing20:03
