Demerzelhello folks02:30
Demerzelcan you guys recommend a decent IR receiver (USB) for use with mythbuntu 8.10?  I don't need the transmitter portion just yet02:31
Demerzeloh and commercial too since i'm all thumbs with a solder gun unfortunately02:32
Demerzelhah02:36
Demerzelfigures i join when everyone's asleep :)02:36
tgm4883Demerzel, i'd recommend the MCEUSB2 IR receiver02:39
Demerzelah you're awake :)02:39
tgm4883I like the remote, and the receiver that comes with it is pretty decent02:40
tgm4883yea, filling out a job app right now02:40
Demerzelusb?02:40
Demerzelsweet02:40
Demerzelworks fine with the version of lirc in 8.10?02:40
tgm4883yep, works good here on my 8.10 setup02:40
tgm4883the remote is the recommended remote too02:41
tgm4883!mceusb202:41

Demerzelcool02:41
Demerzelthe one on the very right?02:41
Demerzelphilips one?02:41
Demerzellooks sexy .. high WAF02:41
Demerzelnow i just gotta figure out where to buy one02:42
Demerzelchecking that wiki page02:42
tgm4883I have the one 3rd from the left02:43
tgm4883actually, I have 402:43
Demerzelhaha02:44
Demerzeli'm hoping to grow to that02:44
Demerzeli just got my first diskless fe setup02:44
Demerzelworks like a champ except no remote02:44
Demerzeldoes that receiver come bundled with other hw?02:45
Demerzele.g. the remote? or do you need to get a tuner with it?02:45
tgm4883just remote and receiver02:45
Demerzelhmm checking newegg02:45
tgm4883you might have to grab it off ebay though02:45
Demerzelah ok02:46
Demerzeldiscontinued?02:46
tgm4883IIRC, yea.  Because technically I believe it is the Windows XP MCE remote02:47
tgm4883an important thing to look for when grabbing that, is make sure you get one that can learn some regular remote codes.  Because then you don't need a second remote to turn on/off your tv and for volume02:48
Demerzelwell02:49
Demerzeli have a logitech harmony02:49
Demerzeli figure that should have a mce remote config02:49
Demerzelrealistically all i really need is the ir receiver02:49
tgm4883oh well then you are fine02:50
Steve_hi everyone02:56
Demerzeltgm4883: is that the kind of ir receiver it comes with?02:56
Demerzelhttp://tinyurl.com/c7xe2302:57
Steve_ive installed mythbuntu for the first time, trying to figure out how to get my kworld120 workin... not sure how to get mercurial installed02:57
Steve_if anyone cares to help...02:57
tgm4883Demerzel, yep, thats the exact one I have02:57
Demerzelsorry man i got no info on that02:57
Demerzeltgm4883: cool ... time to snipe :)02:58
tgm4883an added benefit, is that it also has 2 ir blaster ports02:58
Steve_dem, if you're talkin to me... thanks anyways...02:58
Steve_im doing some searches02:58
Steve_i think i just need the right repository02:58
Steve_oh holy crap, looks like you gotta download the source and build03:00
Steve_fun stuff :)03:00
Demerzelhaha03:01
Demerzelit's more fun if you've got a diskless frontend03:02
Steve_well03:02
Steve_as it turns out i must've misspelled it or something03:02
Steve_because sudo apt-get install mercurial just worked03:02
Steve_lol03:02
Steve_i need a beer03:02
tgm4883Steve_, i'm not sure thats what you think it is03:03
Steve_im not sure what mercurial is at all really03:04
tgm4883unless you are looking for a distributed version control system03:04
Steve_im just trying to follow the instructions on the myth wiki for getting this card to be recognized03:04
Steve_hmm03:04
tgm4883which IIRC is not the same thing as what you are looking for03:04
tgm4883it's like ubiquity and ubiquity03:04
tgm4883the same, but very different03:05
Steve_hmm03:05
Steve_well03:05
Steve_actually my problem originally was that i capitalized the M03:05
Steve_but, otherwise, its spelled just how it is in these instructions03:05
tgm4883link?03:05
Steve_perhaps its related to another step i need to follow to get this thing workin'03:05
Steve_http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/Kworld_ATSC_12003:05
Steve_I'm at the step-by-step under "Making it work"03:05
tgm4883hmm03:06
tgm4883actually, I think you are fine03:06
Steve_honestly i have my doubts about this working at all because i installed the 64 bit version of mythbuntu...03:06
Steve_and the xc3028 python script only worked with the generic driver03:06
Steve_not sure if you know what im talkin about03:06
Steve_thanks for the bit of reassurance with mercurial though :)03:07
tgm4883what version of mythbuntu are you using?03:07
Steve_8.1003:07

Demerzelrhpot1991: that remote matches the second from the left on the mythtv page03:34
Demerzeli'm assuming that receiver works too03:34
Steve_looks like a nice remote03:35
Steve_anyone have any advise on how to install mceusb2?03:41
Steve_that's my next task...03:41
tgm4883Steve_, err, plug it in?03:42

Steve_i have an anyware remote, plugged in...03:42
Steve_i read that i need to use mceusb2, im guessing thats some sort of driver03:42
Steve_yeah maybe ill just figure it out :)03:43
Steve_so, picking media center remotes in the menu loads lirc_dev and lirc_mceusb2 modules03:46
Steve_so i guess thats that03:46
Steve_remote no worky though... trying reboot03:46

z1pp3rHi! I'm trying to setup the IR receiver which is in my laptop (mythbuntu). However, whenever i run mode2 or irw, i get "connection refused" even when i'm root. Most of the guides are specificly made for a certain remote, but how to i find out which IR chip my laptop has? Couldn't find anything obvious in lspci or dmesg09:41
mycosysHi Guys :)can anyone help with custom resolutions under the nV restricted driver? trying to get 1440x1080_50.00 for PAL playback09:48
z1pp3rmycosys, I'm not sure, but couldn't you just specify the resolution in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf ?09:51
mycosysthought it wasnt used anymore? tried to do it with xrandr but got errors09:51
mycosysworked fine with the ATI card i had in there- but the display corrupted every time i ran TV lol09:52
mycosysnow runnin an ol GeForce209:52
z1pp3rxorg.conf is still used, it replaced XF86Config-4 quite some time ago tho... To be honest i'm not sure if there is a better way of doing stuff like that, but making changes in xorg.conf *works*09:57
z1pp3rxrandr should be able to change the resolution for you though, hmm09:57
Joker_-_whats up with nvidia tv-out outputting too large image for the screen?14:43
jlevyMy mythbuntu box's kernel crashes every few days (keyboard lights flashing).  I don't see anything about the crash in /var/log/messages.  Is there any other log I can check for info on the crash?14:44
Joker_-_jlevy: is hardware failure totally out of possibilities?14:44
jlevyJoker_-_: I ran memtest for 5 passes, no errors.14:45
Joker_-_could be the cpu, either overheating or power supply nmot giving enought power?14:45
jlevyJoker_-_: hmmm, any good linux diagnostics for cpu?14:46
Joker_-_cpuburn ?14:46
Joker_-_it runs your cpu at 100%14:46
Joker_-_run it a few times (number of processors +1) and if theres something that could fail, it will14:47
Joker_-_be aware that it could damage your computer tho14:47
Joker_-_if it does overheat, this is gonna fry it14:47
jlevyJoker_-_: It's difficult for me to believe that it's the it's a load issue though14:47
Joker_-_so better watch out14:47
Joker_-_could be the power supply aswell u know14:47
jlevybecause the system has never crashed while recording or watching tv, or any kind of use14:47
Joker_-_it crashes when... ?14:48
jlevyonly happens after days of idling14:48
Joker_-_anything in bios like "suspend"14:48
Joker_-_you know, ACPI14:48
jlevyI'll take a look.14:48
Joker_-_anything like suspend, low voltage things can lead to crashes like that14:49
Joker_-_a computer that crashes is generally because it needs more power (voltage) or it overheats (too much voltage). Either way you can "correct" these problems by downclocking your CPU14:50
jlevyJoker_-_: ACPI suspend state => S3 state14:51
Joker_-_then you've got the hardware failure.. power supply isnt giving proper current, cpu is dying... etc14:51
Joker_-_S3?14:51
jlevychoices are s3 and s114:52
Joker_-_doesnt gives me much informations heh14:52
Joker_-_you'd need your mobo's manual14:52
Joker_-_can't you like "disable" the whole power management thing?14:53
Joker_-_Disabling power management prevents all the power management tho. Beware that if the CPU overheats, you'll have no protection.14:55
=== jlevy_ is now known as jlevy
Joker_-_Disabling power management prevents all the power management tho. Beware that if the CPU overheats, you'll have no protection.14:55
jlevysorry, got disconnected for a minute.  did I miss anything?14:55
Joker_-_I've asked you if you could diables the whole power management thing14:56
Joker_-_then told you what I just copied14:56
jlevyit appears that's not an option14:57
Joker_-_strange...14:57
Joker_-_do you see anything concerning hard drive power down and VGA suspend... something like that?14:57
jlevyIf I select S3 for ACPI suspend state14:57
jlevythere is another option14:57
jlevy"Video Repost"14:58
jlevy"Video repost will allow the video BIOS to be initialized coming out of S3.  Some video controllers require this to be enabled"14:58
Joker_-_what is S3?14:59
Joker_-_is that a german board or what? :)14:59
jlevy "S1 is the safest mode but consumes more power.  S3 consumes low power but drivers may not support this state."14:59
Joker_-_go S1 then... but what the %$ is that thing15:00
Joker_-_I,m clueless15:00
jlevyThis is the original board in an oldish (2.8ghz) gateway tower15:00
jlevySo does mythbuntu actually go into suspend mode when it's idle?15:01
Joker_-_maybe you could surf the web for informations on this board versus power management15:01
jlevyIt looks like these settings have to do with low power states, and as far as I know the machine just runs full power all the time15:02
Joker_-_well, mine does... mythbuntu isnt anything special in fact. It's simply xubuntu (ubuntu using xfce's dexktop instead of gnome), with myth-tv already installed and configured.15:02
jlevyIf it did suspend, I would hear HDDs turn off, etc. right?15:03
Joker_-_depends on suspend mode...15:03
Joker_-_but your bios is not talkative15:03
jlevyIt does turn off the display....15:03
jlevymaybe that's the issue15:03
jlevyok this gives me a lot to think about and troubleshoot.  thanks a lot Joker_-_!15:03
Joker_-_maybe it tells your video card to suspend the output, then throw less power at it, and poof something goes wrong, the card is underpowered and it crashes15:04
jlevyJoker_-_: right.  I'll play with the suspend settings15:04
Joker_-_or maybe it's just the power supply that gives bad power at low voltages...15:04
jlevyJoker_-_: I think I have a spare.  I can test that too.15:05
Joker_-_could be a few things, have a nice week of testing ;)15:05
jlevyJoker_-_: Oh I will.  Thanks again!15:05
Joker_-_np15:05
Joker_-_dont forget to google your board + your problem15:05
jlevyJoker_-_: Ok, good idea15:06
Joker_-_so what about nvidia's drivers outputting an image larger than what the TV can handle (overscan)? Any workaround yet?15:07
Joker_-_besides, the screen flickers from time to time15:07
Joker_-_it flickers only when whatching TV (tv-tuner) on a snowy channel tho... I guess it's not related but who knows...15:09
jlevyJoker_-_: where can I configure suspend options?15:17
Joker_-_power management15:18
jlevyJoker_-_: ok, I was thinking of command line, but I can do that15:18
jlevyJoker_-_: actually, I don't see that in xfce15:21
Joker_-_it's in the control panel iirc15:21
wombo1What version of LIRC will be included in 9.04?15:34
wombo1will it be the latest? I am hoping it has the Antec LCD driver15:35

foxbuntuand thats alsa :)16:12
foxbuntulirc: 0.8.4a-0ubuntu316:12
foxbuntuwombo1, which lcd driver?16:13
foxbuntuwombo1, iirc its just the Soundgraph IR/LCD device unless Antec has release a new version of the hardware into the wild16:14
foxbuntuwombo1, the patch required to make it work was on LCDProc not LIRC16:14
foxbuntuJoker_-_, the only way to properly handle overscan is via mode lines in xorg.conf and its TV specific, you will need to attempt to find information about your TV and then research using mode lines, I personally just live with the bit of overscan I get from my machine16:17
tgm4883foxbuntu, do you know if that patch made it into lcdproc?16:19
foxbuntuJoker_-_, also Mythbuntu is a bit more than xubuntu + mythtv, thats a little over simplified.16:19
foxbuntutgm4883, I dont know...there was talk about getting it submitted but I dont know if anyone ever actually did it16:19
foxbuntutgm4883, I actually should have tried the other night but used my wiki because I knew it worked16:20
tgm4883doesn't look like it16:21
tgm4883based on the bug comments16:21
foxbuntudidnt think it did16:21
tgm4883there is a ppa with it available16:21
foxbuntuno one wanted to take on regression testing for it16:21
foxbuntuI would have to look over the ppa version as well...the version packaged in the repos is slightly different in Ubuntu than the upstream version I noticed (at least the install/build methods)16:23
foxbuntutgm4883, I think the patch might break normal imon hardware16:24

administratorhi, when I try to run mythtv-setup, I am asked whether I want to end mythbackend, when I do so, nothing happens and then I am asked, whether I want to fill mythdatabase, normally, there should be a gui, where I can change some options21:26
superm1administrator, jaunty?21:26
administratoryes, indeed!21:27
superm1are you using trunk or fixes?21:27
administratorthere is no trunk for jaunty21:27
superm1well there is on the PPA21:27
superm1if it's not mirroring, there must be something wrong with the mirroring system (bleh if so)21:27
administratoroh yes I saw that, but it says its broken for amd6421:28
superm1launchpad.net/~mythbuntu-trunk-0.22/+archive if the mirrors aren't working21:28
superm1it should be OK on amd64 now21:28
superm1plugins - that's another story for another day21:28
superm1however, if you want to debug your current problem, i suspect one of two problems21:29
superm11) bug 34189821:29
administratorI only need to add it to sources.conf?21:29
ZinnBug 341898 in mythtv "Mythtv frontend does not display any fonts" [Unknown, New] http://www.launchpad.net/bugs/34189821:29
superm12) you started a trunk install, installed the DB, and then went back to the repo or fixes version21:29
hadsand logs should tell you about that.21:30
superm1administrator, yeah you'd add the source on that webpage to your /etc/apt/sources.list21:30
superm1yeah, so most definitely go check logs in /var/log/mythtv21:30
superm1or use mythbuntu-log-grabber to post them here21:30
administratoryes, that was quite stupid21:30
superm1so if it's (2), then you'll want to log into mysql and drop the database, then run dpkg-reconfigure mythtv-database to reinstall the fixes version21:30
