inanimateIs digiKam available for Kubuntu yet?00:09
williweryes00:10
inanimate(A version that doesn't uninstall libplasma-addons, ideally.)00:10
inanimateI haven't been able to find it... The last I saw was an old post talking about digikam-kde4, but that's long gone. Is there a digiKam 0.10.0 package that doesn't uninstall Plasma widgets?00:15
inanimateAnd is there even a 0.94 that doesn't uninstall Plasma widgets?00:16
idespinnerwell, im stumped... anyone know where exactly my Xorg configuration is located? /etc/X11/xorg.conf only has 5 lines of generics00:20
idespinnerkubuntu 9.04 btw00:20
berniv6idespinner: that is your xorg configuration ... never xorgs autodetect almost everything00:21
idespinnerwhat about in the event I suspect it has misconfigured/autodetected wrong?00:22
berniv6then you can of course configure the appropriate device manually in this configuration file00:22
berniv6not sure whether you can generate a full xorg.conf from the autodetected settings to alter though00:23
idespinneror atleast see what it is autodetecting...00:23
gimoxkubuntu beta released :)00:23
gimox9.0400:23
idespinnera new 9.04?00:23
idespinneror same one...00:23
gimoxhttp://releases.ubuntu.com/releases/kubuntu/9.04/00:24
gimoxit has been released one hour ago, i think it's new :)00:24
berniv69.04 isn't released/supported yet, it's still in development00:24
gimoxi use 9.04 since alpha 300:24
idespinneri know i downloaded this 9.04 monday...00:24
gimoxand i think it's fully stable since alpha 500:24
berniv6I have ugly performance regressions with the opensource ati driver00:25
gimoxofficial release have almost nothing new from beta00:25
gimoxjust documentations00:25
berniv6works fine in the beginning but gets slower and slower with a few hours of work00:25
gimoxheh, i haven't noticed it... anyway if that's true00:26
gimoxsurely it won't be fixed now00:26
gimoxevery software upgrade has been freezed00:26
berniv6now I'm on gnome (which hasn't happened to me since 6.something), which seems to work fine, so it's some sort of KDE issue00:26
gimoxdunno... surely gnome is lighter than kde00:27
gimoxtry again on first april00:27
berniv6it's fast in the beginning, but gets slower00:27
gimoxon that day will be released kde 4.2.200:27
berniv6just by doing massive work in konsole00:27
berniv6I suspect it's a weird *-leak somewhere, but memory consumption looks okay and restarting konsole doesn't help00:28
gimoxdon't know what to say... i usually keep this PC with kubuntu jaunty on working for days00:28
m_tadeuwhich kde version will be released on 9.04?00:28
berniv6gimox: do you use Composite?00:29
gimox4.2.200:29
gimoxno i've disabled kwin00:29
gimoxoh sry!00:29
gimoxi'm a bit tired...00:29
gimoxno i don't use it00:29
berniv6okay, me neither00:30
gimoxmaybe kde 4.2.2  will solve that problem00:31

dr_willisTheres guides/wiki pages on getting that game going under ubuntu01:24

dr_willisit pays to be clear and concse. and give the full command01:26
kalidarand has sound isues?01:26
dr_willisDONT use sudo01:26
dr_willisinstall the game on a per-user basis01:26
kalidari tryed sudo lol yeah it dident work01:27
kalidarwhat you mean per-user basis/01:27
dr_willisand it has to be 'executable' or use the   'sh ./whatever.run' method01:27
dr_willisrun it as a user01:27
dr_willisNOT as root..  dont install it system wide. :)01:27
kalidarok im realy confused01:27
kalidartell me what to do and ill understand01:27
dr_willisRUN the command to install it as a user01:27
dr_willissh ./whatevertheghingis.run01:27
dr_willischeck the forums and wiki pages for info on that game. Its so old - it can have issues01:28
kalidarif its so old why is it in the top 10 linux games01:29

dr_willisits an old game.. its in the top 10 because its a good game01:31

kalidarthis is my last request today01:35
kalidarit dident ask me where it wanted me to install too01:35
kalidarit just asked me for super user password01:35
kalidarand did its own thing01:35
dr_willisYou installed it as root then.. so its system wide.. which isent how i normall y install it.01:35
dr_willisso it isntalled somewhere.. no idea.  proberly /usr/local/XXXXXXXX01:36
kalidarwell you said just type sh ./file.run01:36

dr_willisunoess its been made executable01:41

dr_willisits how you can run a .run script01:41
kalidaraww ok well how come i chouldent chose were i wanted to install it01:41
frogonwheelsanybody know if the new kcmrandr / kephal stuff is coming?01:41

kalidarhow do i remove something ive installed01:42
dr_williskalidar:  depends on how you installed it.01:42
kalidarwow linux is realy hard and confuseing01:42
kalidarok well acording to this current installation01:42
cx00102it sure is01:42
kalidarhow would i remove it01:42
dr_williskalidar:  no its not.. you are just not thinking  ahead.01:42
dr_williskalidar:  well logically the installer 'should' have an uninstall option01:43
frogonwheelskalidar: you just uninstall it with the installer you installed it with.01:43
dr_willisOr if you installed it someplace you knew.. you could just delete teh directories01:43
kalidarand the command to do that is?01:43
cx00102as in ./file.run --uninstall01:43
dr_willissame command as you used befor perhaps?01:43
kalidarok ill try that01:43
dr_willisthe 'best' way to install things in ubuntu is to use the normal package manager..01:44
dr_willistheres plenty of games in there.01:44
Dragnslcrkalidar- to be fair, this isn't the normal way of installing programs01:44
JamesCCCThe safest way to uninstall something is to throw away your computer.01:44
kalidarproblem...01:44
DragnslcrMost programs can be installed through Adept01:44
kalidarnothing happend when i typed sh ./file.run --uninstall01:45

kalidarso i know for the feture01:46
kalidarthen im gona reinstal it localy and play it01:47
cx00102well a .run file is just a script01:47
dr_willisthe Installer MUST have an uninstall feature.. or you delete the files manually.01:47
DragnslcrDepends on the program01:47
kalidaraww ok01:47
kalidarthat explains alot01:47
kalidarso basily its a crappy script01:47
kalidarthat dosent allow local installs01:47
kalidarand or dosent allow uninstals?01:47
cx00102how do you mean?01:47
dr_willisit does allow local.. and i imagine it can uninstall01:48
dr_willisdid you try just rerunning it and see  if it had a uninstall option?01:48
kalidarhmmm01:48
* dr_willis takes that as a no. :)01:49
kalidarnope no uninstall01:50

kde4plzat least your using *ubuntu... were friendly folks :002:21

kde4plzme too ;002:22
pedahzurI've set up printers in Ubuntu before, but this time around I had to resort to using Cups to set it up (it was an SMB printer). Test pages work fine, and my user (not root!) can print to the printer, but *no* cups printers are listed in the drop down (i.e. Kate's print dialog) for another user. I've never seen this. Can someone point me in the direction of what I need to check? I assume it's permissions, but what and where?02:23
frogonwheels(that's the xorg - open source one - rather than ati's )02:23
babylonsfurysweet, ok, let's try that then, :)02:23
mefisto__babylonsfury: you were probably using the "ati" open source driver before installing fglrx02:23
babylonsfuryoh, the one that black screened me that the other guy told me to download the one's off of ati site?02:24
mefisto__oh you got fglrx from the ati site?02:25
beatzzsup fellow Kubuntuieans02:25
kde4plzhi02:25
mefisto__babylonsfury: to go back to the open source ati driver, you'll have to remove the one from the ati site. there should be instructions on how to remove it02:26
babylonsfuryyeah working on that02:27
mefisto__babylonsfury: you can also try the fglrx driver from ubuntu repos. that's what I'm using. I can't get 3d acceleration from the open source driver with my card02:28
kde4plz!ati02:28
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto02:28
mefisto__babylonsfury: but the open source one is definitely the best choice if it works for you02:29

mefisto__m_tadeu__: there's some sound troubleshooting at that link you could try02:44

babylonsfuryI can't get usb to work past grub, second I boot into root or kde usb is gone12:26
ikoniababylonsfury: boot into root ?12:27
ikoniababylonsfury: could you try to explain that again12:27
babylonsfuryfrom the menu, if I use the recovery option12:27
babylonsfuryinstead of the normal one12:27
ikoniawhat do you mean "usb is gone"12:27
babylonsfurygone, as in power disabled to the ports, not there, won't recognize a device at all12:27
babylonsfurywhat's weird, is the install, ran fine with it12:28
ikoniababylonsfury: what does the syslog say when you plug something in ?12:28
ikoniababylonsfury: are the usb kernel modules currently loaded ?12:28
babylonsfuryI can't get that far, or I don't know how to12:28
ikoniababylonsfury: lack of usb is stopping you boot ?12:29
babylonsfuryI boot into grub, with usb, and everything is good12:29
babylonsfuryI can select my boot options12:29
ikoniababylonsfury: what happens when you try to boot normally12:29
babylonsfurybut the very second I try to change a boot option, or boot into any mode12:29
ikoniababylonsfury: not haveing usb support shouldn't stop your machine booting12:29
babylonsfuryusb goes away12:29
ikoniababylonsfury: you're not making much sense in what youre saying12:29
babylonsfuryit boots, I can get to the login screen12:29
babylonsfurybut I can't type anything, I can't change any options, i can't get to a console12:30
ikoniababylonsfury: ok - so your keyboard and mouse is USB ?12:30
ikoniais that the problem12:30
babylonsfuryyes12:30
babylonsfuryand no ps/2 on here :(12:32
ikoniaok - so the problem is your usb keyboard/mouse isn't working12:32
ikonianot USB is dead12:32
babylonsfurycorrect, not past grub12:32
ikoniaok now that makes more sense12:32
babylonsfurywell, usb dies, after grub, like, I can't plug my phone or ipod in anymore, they don't even detect they have power12:32
ikoniababylonsfury: the first thing I'd suggest doing is changing the splash option on the normal boot so you can see what's going on when you boot12:32
ikoniababylonsfury: that maybe the best idea to get an idea to the problem12:32
babylonsfuryi can't12:32
cinexikonia: would the errors be in dmesg ?12:32
ikoniacinex: he can't login to look12:32
babylonsfuryit tells you to use the up and down keys to select an entry12:32
babylonsfuryand push to e edit commands before booting12:32
ikoniababylonsfury: you said usb worked at the grub level12:32

geniiresno: This is because sometime previously you used nano with admin priveleges in your regular user's home directory and it overwrote the history file with incorrect permissions for the normal user to access. Chown the file back to them and all will be well14:13

BluesKajbabylonsfury, lspci | grep audio to find the name of your soundcard , so you can install the right driver14:16

EvaLuaTehello14:39
EvaLuaTei'm having issues while trying to install kubuntu14:39
EvaLuaTeafter i enter the time zone and the keyboard layout, after it scans the disks, the installer either remains there (at the keyboard layout selection window) or opens the partitions window but doesn't show anything (any partitions) inside the window14:40
geniiEvaLuaTe: That usually means the chipset which controls the ide/sata/scsi bus is not recognised or have a driver loaded14:41
EvaLuaTei have to mention that i also have windows installed on a partition and i have 4 partitions14:41
EvaLuaTegenii: any suggestion on how i could solve this?14:41
geniiEvaLuaTe: usel lspci command to return the list of hardware on the pci bus.... find the one which is your disk controller. Then google for which linux driver is needed. Often you just need to modprobe one in and then it sees the discs attached after14:43
EvaLuaTehmm14:43
geniiEvaLuaTe: If you use lspci -nn   it will return also  vendor:device    codes in the result which can be useful14:44
EvaLuaTeok, i also have another issue. kubuntu doesn't seem to recognize my wireless adapter by default, so i have no internet connection when i boot into kubuntu14:44

sgso glad to meet someone using kubuntu17:34
Torchjameshicks212121: can you telnet it? can you ping other hosts?17:34
Torchjameshicks212121: are you running nscd?17:34
jameshicks212121Torch: yes17:34
KomiaPoikagenii: now i installed flahsplayer with amd64 .so manually, but firefox doesnt see it17:34
jameshicks212121Torch: I dont think so. (nscd).17:35
KomiaPoikacinex17:35
Torchjameshicks212121: you can indeed ping other hosts, like yahoo.com?17:35
geniijameshicks212121: Interesting. Your route doesn't have any default. like:  default         192.168.1.1     0.0.0.0         UG    100    0        0 eth6    or so17:35
Laruft_is it possible to configure resolution/depth of a virtual desktop?17:36
Torchgenii: it does.17:36
sgYou feel a bit alone using this distro connecting via e-mail17:36
Laruft_I mean of a desktop in linux,  i have 4 desktops, i'd like one to be lower res, but upscaled17:36
TorchLaruft_: X11 cannot do that AFAIK. you could run separate X11 ervers.17:36
jameshicks212121genii: Line 19 in pastebin???17:37
Torchjameshicks212121: your default route looks ok to me17:37
jameshicks212121Torch: I don't understand how nslookup can work but ping can't resolve the host.17:38
Torchjameshicks212121: i've seen that before.17:38
jameshicks212121Torch: apt-get update doesn't work either. I don't really care about the ping.....17:38
Torchjameshicks212121: it's not often that happens, but it can indeed happen.17:39
Torchjameshicks212121: what does your /etc/hosts look like?17:39
sgI guess I'm a typical kubuntu newbiee no wireless network17:39
sgAnd few more problems solved a time to time17:40
jameshicks212121Torch: updated pastebin http://pastebin.com/d29649d9717:40
snydereriossg do you know, which wlan-chip your pc/laptop uses?17:41
geniijameshicks212121: line 19 reads: 0.0.0.0         192.168.1.1     0.0.0.0         UG    0      0        0 eth6    and not for instance like on my box: default         192.168.1.1     0.0.0.0         UG    100    0        0 eth0    (would be eth6 in your case)17:41
Torchgenii: it's still a valid default route17:42
holyscottany problems found with the new beta since release?17:42
jameshicks212121genii: I did add the route by hand is that why it loooks different?17:42
geniijameshicks212121: Yes, likely17:42
Torchjameshicks212121: mine looks the same and comes from DHCP17:42
sgWell I have another bigger problem now, like when I try to read from the deskmenu on the bottom all the menus come up empty17:43
Torchjameshicks212121: /etc/hosts looks okay. i'd remove the 127.0.1.1 line, however17:43
sgsnydereios have you seen this problem before17:44
sg??17:44
geniiKomiaPoika: Did you put the .so file it un-tarred into /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/       ?17:44
sgIt goes on because when I use Amrok all the menus come up empty allso :-/17:44
jameshicks212121Torch: OK got rid of it. problem persists.17:45
Torchjameshicks212121: thought so ;-)17:45
sgsnydereios And using this IRC window all the menus are empty and on my right I have pictures of users but no names are readable17:45
KomiaPoikagenii: i have now17:46
sgThougt they blink when people goes of the server :-)17:46
geniiKomiaPoika: So restart firefox. Then put in url bar:      about:plugins               and see if it shows there17:47
jsmith3anyone know a way to look at kubuntu log files? I've formatted twice already with the same problem that happens a couple weeks into use: after logging in through kdm, the screen goes black and restarts back to kdm, works fine on root though17:47
Torchjameshicks212121: again, you _can_ telnet google? but apt-get doesn't work?17:47
jameshicks212121Torch: telnet: could not resolve google.com/telnet: Name or service not known17:47
Torchjameshicks212121: ah, ok.17:47
Torchjameshicks212121: and yahoo.com or other external hosts?17:48
geniijsmith3: I can tell by those symptoms already that you need to chown all the stuff in the users home directory back their name17:48
jameshicks212121Torch: only thing that seems to resolve names is nslookup.17:48
Torchjameshicks212121: nslookup is obsolete for years now. use dig and host17:48
jameshicks212121Torch: sorry, dig works OK too.17:49
Torchjameshicks212121: ok17:49
jsmith3genii: ill try that17:49
geniijsmith3: This means all the hidden dot-files too17:49
jsmith3yeah, ill use the -R switch17:49
jameshicks212121Torch: telnet to yahoo.com gave same results as google.com17:49
Torchjameshicks212121: so in conclusion: no external resolving. but dig works.17:50
jameshicks212121Torch: yes and driving me crazy.... This should be easy...  :(17:50
=== Roozbeh|Away is now known as RoozbehOnline

=== Roozbeh|Away is now known as RoozbehOnline
jameshicks212121Torch: I added the two OpenDNS servers to top of resolv.conf, I can ping both servers by IP, and problem persists.17:53
AthunyeI cannot visualize kubuntu.org in opera. The content is not displayed.17:54
TorchAthunye: same here. can't use another browser?17:55
Torchjameshicks212121: hmm, hmm, hmm.17:55
AthunyeYes. Firefox. But I like opera more :D17:55
TorchAthunye: no doubt this should be fixed... maybe you can file a bug report?17:56
AthunyeSure.17:56
|PaperTiger|How do I changed to a specific graphics driver I've installed?17:56
|PaperTiger|I know it's xorg.*something* but what do I have to do to get there?17:56
AthunyeTorch: I will as soon I get some "free" time.17:57
Torch|PaperTiger|: its in /etc/X11/xorg.conf17:57
Torch|PaperTiger|: if you're not familiar with using a shell, don't go there ;-)17:57
|PaperTiger|Torch, thank you17:57
Athunye|PaperTiger|: backup the file, first.17:57
|PaperTiger|Torch,, I've been told about doing it before, as I had problems, so I sort of know17:58
Torch|PaperTiger|: Athunye is right, make a backup.17:58
|PaperTiger|Torch, I know it's in the decice section and I change it to the name of the driver I wish to use. And I shall17:58
|PaperTiger|Athunye, thanks17:58
Torch|PaperTiger|: if you're just going to replace Driver "nv" by Driver "nvidia" or something, that shouldn't be too hard, yes.17:59
|PaperTiger|It's ATi17:59
Torch|PaperTiger|: well, don't use DRiver "nvidia", then ;-)17:59
* Torch goes feeding the cats.17:59
|PaperTiger|Torch, nope :P It should be going from fglrx to radeonhd17:59
* jameshicks212121 is going to burn one and ponder his problem some more......18:00
mreznikjust a small question18:01
|PaperTiger|Torch, as a backup, is copying the file to Documents enough?18:01
mrezniki have a MSI 662v-m is not working the video on Kubuntu18:01
|PaperTiger|Torch, then I believe I have to log out afterward, correct?18:02
=== root is now known as Guest49833
Torch|PaperTiger|: copy it anywhere to your home folder, thats fine18:06
Torch|PaperTiger|: you need to restart X. log out might not be enough18:06
Torch|PaperTiger|: ctrl+alt+backspace used to do that, but ubuntu might be blocking that18:06
Torch|PaperTiger|: if that doesn't do anything, reboot.18:07
|PaperTiger|Torch, okay. How do I actually edit it? I don't think the propaitry (excuse spelling) driver is installed.. :S18:07
Torch|PaperTiger|: edit what? xorg.conf?18:07
|PaperTiger|Yes, it opens with Kate, but I don't think the bit I need to edit is there18:08
Torchjameshicks212121: this sounds like something complicated. i don't think we'll find a solution here for your problem. you might want to consider the forums.18:08
Torch|PaperTiger|: hmm, you want to go from fglrx to radeonhd, but there's no Driver "fglrx" in there?18:09
|PaperTiger|No18:09
Torch|PaperTiger|: can you pastebin the file?18:09
|PaperTiger|It won't let me activate the proprietary FGLRX driver18:10
|PaperTiger|Damnit, I have to go to work now...18:10
|PaperTiger|Will you still be on here at just gone 8, Torch?18:10
jameshicks212121Torch: Thanks for the effort.18:10
Torch|PaperTiger|: no, i'll have to leave soon18:10
Torchjameshicks212121: np. sorry we didn't find it, though.18:10
|PaperTiger|Okay, Torch, not to worry, I'll ask someone else. Thanks for the help though.18:10
|PaperTiger|Much appreciated.18:11
Torch|PaperTiger|: you're welcome. good luck.18:11
dave_Hi guys , who  knows why when i install programs for gnome (when i have kde 4.1) the system is change to gnome  ;/18:11
cinexdave_: do u mean when you boot it up or when you get the log in screen  ?18:11

cinex1 or both?18:12
dave_but before i install some gnome programs18:12
dave_and system is changing for gnome,, like in ubuntu18:12
cinexok. to get the kde login screen back you could try: sudo dpkg-reconfigure kdm18:12
cinexand to get the kubuntu boot splash back you could use usplash (with: sudo apt-get install usplash usplash-themes18:13

dave_because i had that situation twice and i was tired of reformating the kubuntu18:14

dave_i know18:14
Torchdave_: because you won't learn anything that way and make the same mistake again.18:14
dave_but i couldn't do that in other way18:15
Advil_hello: kde 4 b!tched on me when installing some updates today - I was running a beta of 4.2 at the time... I can't load kde right now so I'm wanting to run a "full upgrade" from apt-get.  Can someone please give me the command line to perform an upgrade on kde 4.2?  I think I have the correct repositories.18:15

Advil_no Xsession:unable to start Xsession -no "/home/gabo/.xsession" file, no session managers, no window managers, and no terminal emulators found19:27
Advil_gabo - is not me... just a c&p19:28
geniiAdvil_: Sounds like it's loading the default wm when there isn't one specified (twm or such)19:28
dingdingAdvil_: man that serious ,you should reinstall the system19:29
Advil_genii, any idea's on how to get one then?19:29
Advil_dingding; lol yeah, I've been told that19:29
dingdingAdvil_: how do you talk to us if no x exists?19:30
Advil_I'm on Windows right now19:30
dingdingohh19:30
geniiAdvil_: Well, tedious, but maybe to try something like   sudo apt-get install --reinstall kubuntu-desktop19:30
geniiAdvil_: If you make a new user does X load OK for them, or not?19:31
Advil_genii, I wasn't aware of the --reinstall option.  I was looking for that earlier.  darn19:31
Advil_I haven't tried a new user -- how to do that from command line?19:31
dwidmannAdvil_: sudo adduser19:31
geniiAdvil_: sudo adduser newusername19:31

dwidmann(I'm always lagging a lot ... wish I could get a better internet connection 'round here)19:32
Advil_no joy - same error19:32
dwidmannadvil, want the command to reinstall everything you've got installed?19:33
Advil_something's wrong with X19:33
geniiAdvil_: OK, so it doesn't seem then to be a permissions in the home dir type of thing. I'd give the kubuntu-desktop reinstall a whirl19:33
dingdingAdvil_:you probably should reinstall19:33
ikoniadingding: why should he re-install ?19:34
dingdingikonia:what do you mean ?19:34
ikoniadingding: you just said a user should re-install ?19:34
dwidmannsudo apt-get install --reinstall $(dpkg --list | grep ^ii.* | cut -d ' ' -f 3 | tr '\n' ' ')19:34
dingdingikonia: he made a bad update and his X is dead19:35
=== guido is now known as Guest49664
Advil_ikonia, he means reinstall the whole kubuntu, genii means reinstall kubuntu-desktop19:35
ikoniaAdvil_: yes - reinstralling kubuntu is not the answer19:35
ikoniahence why I'm asking why someone has just been told to re-install19:35
Advil_dwidmann, that looks complicated.  What does that command do?19:36
dwidmanncommand mentioned above will reinstall everything that's installed :)19:36
dingdingAdvil_: try what genii says but if does not work your only choice19:36
ikoniadingding: no it's not19:36
Advil_dwidmann, but if something is missing, I would be in the same boat, no?19:36
ikoniatelling someone to re-install the OS to fix X11 is really a last resort - what else have you tried to fix it ?19:37
dingdingikonia:what it`s not?19:37
dwidmannAdvil_: maybe so19:37
geniiAdvil_: dwidmann's command will get a list of your currently installed packages and then reinstall them again19:37
Advil_i'm 51% done gnome19:37
ikoniadingding: to fix an X server - reinstalling the OS without ANY form of debugging is not an answer19:37
dwidmannI've a better idea though, I think.19:38
Advil_ikonia, it's a quick "fix". lol19:38
dwidmannAdvil_: pastebin your /var/log/Xorg.0.log19:38
dingdingikonia:it is a solution if that is the only choice19:38
ikoniadingding: how is it his only choice - what else have you tried19:38
dingdingikonia:never mind19:39
ikoniadingding: no - that is not the answer19:39
Advil_ikonia, I haven't done much other than trying to get apt-get to update, upgrade, install kubuntu-dektop. This morning after a ton of updates including kernel, i'm stuck in the command line19:39
dingdingikonia: hey you want to cut off my head for that19:39
ikoniadingding: if you don't know how to fix something - or don't know how to debug or progress it - don't offer advice like "re-install the OS" - you have skated on thin ice19:39
dingding?19:39
dwidmannikonia: it can be an answer if it worked previously and having it working is time sensitive19:39
dingdingikonia:what do you mean with-you have skated on thin ice19:40
ikoniadwidmann: have you tried anything ? have you stated it's time sensative19:40
dwidmannWe're not talking about me here, but I've run into situations fitting what I just said before.19:40
Advil_settle down fella's, this isn't a huge deal.  I'd rather get it working than reinstall the whole system, but it's not a big deal.  It's a second system for me19:41
topylireinstalling is almost never needed. better to fix the existing system19:41
ikoniadingding: I'll make this clear - if you don't know the answer or how to progress it - dont offer people help19:41
ikoniadingding: telling someone to re-install the OS blindly with no debugging or knowledge of the problem is not advice to be given out19:41
dwidmanntopyli: it can be needed if there are *cough cough*problemswithupdatedpackages*cough cough*19:42
dingdingikonia:what is wrong with you ,you are ready to shoot me for nothing19:42
geniiAdvil_: It's usually more informative and educational when a problem can be diagnosed and repaired intstead of side-stepping the entire "why is it actually happening" issue. But a lot of users would often rather give up and start over.19:42
topylidwidmann: perhaps, when you have strange packages in your system19:42
Advil_genii, I agree -- which is why I'm here19:42
dwidmannthings like wanting to print, very strange indeed :P19:43
ikoniaAdvil_: do you want to exaplin the problem a little and we can have a better look at it19:43
topyli"reboot. if that doesn't work, reinstall." i think  i heard that when i was using dos and windows pc's in the late 80s19:43
dwidmann(old problem, nevermind that dead horse)19:43
Advil_ikonia, basically I installed about 86 updates this morning including the newest kernel19:44
ikoniaAdvil_: which new kernel  ?19:44
Advil_upon reboot, it brings me to command line.  When I startx it gives me these errors19:45
Advil_no Xsession:unable to start Xsession -no "/home/gabo/.xsession" file, no session managers, no window managers, and no terminal emulators found19:45
Advil_I think the kernel was 2.6.24-1619:45

Advil_although I'm running 2.6.24-14 now19:47
Advil_8.1019:47
ikoniaAdvil_: you sure thats 8.10 ?19:48
ikoniaAdvil_: 8.10 should have a 2.6.27 kernel19:48
ikoniaAdvil_: check with lsb_release -a what version you've got19:49
Advil_let me check19:49
ikoniaAdvil_: could be a bit messy if not19:49

ikoniaAdvil_: ok - thats better, that makes more sense19:51
ikoniaAdvil_: can you check if you have the propsed repo enabled ?19:51
ikoniaAdvil_: this could be the root of the problem as I'm only saying 2.6.27-11 as latest19:51

Advil_no, sorry19:52
dwidmannAdvil_: what does apt-cache policy linux-image say for you?19:53
Advil_other info about this: i was using a beta 4.2 kde19:53
ikoniaAdvil_: no problem - check out dwidmanns command, or look in /etc/apt/sources.list for the proposed repo - see if it's enabled19:54
Advil_I have proposed/main packages 2.6.27.11.14 019:55
ikoniaahhhh19:55
ikoniaproposed, Advil_ the first thing I'd suggest is removing that19:55
Advil_alright -- I think I had to add that to get the beta KDE a while ago?19:56
ikoniaAdvil_: ahhh possibly yes19:56

=== milian_ is now known as milian
dwidmannAdvil_: if you were the one with the X problem earlier, maybe reinstalling really could be the easiest fix, if you're encountering problems with proposed packages ...19:58
dwidmann(seeing as I'm technically not allowed to recommend downgrading, right?)19:58
ikoniadwidmann: you can suggest a downgrade19:58
Advil_as an aside: gnome is installing now19:58
ikoniadwidmann: thats a good solution, nothing wrong with that19:58
dwidmannikonia: it depends how many packages are in question though19:58
ikoniaAdvil_: no point in bothering with desktops until your Xserver is running19:59
ikoniadwidmann: a very good point19:59
Advil_no doubt.19:59
Advil_ok, so I edit my package list and remark those proposed?19:59
ikoniaAdvil_: when it starts and it drops you the command prompt are there any warnings/info on screen before19:59
ikoniaAdvil_: remove the proposed repo and do a sudo apt-get update19:59
ikoniaAdvil_: that will put you back on the "main" repo's only19:59

dwidmannThere is a way to do them all, but I don't remember the specifics, and it involves using the pin priority in apt preferences, or was it apt.conf, or something like that20:00
ikoniadwidmann: yes, I've done that in the past, I remember a clever scripted way of doing it, I'll see if I can dig it out20:01
dwidmannsetting the priority on packages from the stable packages to greater than 1000, so it c an force a downgrade20:01
ikoniabe interesting to know if this is a broken package, or a driver / config problem20:01

Advil_sorry, it's running in a VM...  I can't remember how to edit my sources20:05
ikoniaAdvil_: ahhh it's running on a vm ok thats good info20:06
ikoniaAdvil_: the first thing I'd suggest is rebooting back into the 2.6.27.11 kernel - its the current stable, lets work from the stable platform if possible20:07
Advil_lol20:10
Advil_for sh!ts and giggles, I tried startx again before rebooting... and I'm in Gnome20:10
ikoniaAdvil_: try to control the langauge please.20:11
ikoniaAdvil_: really, so the desktop loaded20:11
Advil_yes, It's up, editing sources now20:11
ikoniaAdvil_: good good, getting rid of the proposed updates is a good thing20:12

ikoniaAdvil_: correct, so technically I should hang up the phone caller ;)20:13

Advil_updating repository now.20:14
Advil_thanks for all your help, ikonia20:14
Advil_I have to get going in about 15-20 min.20:14

ikoniaAdvil_: if you've disabled proposed you've back to default20:15

jdahlI have not been able to configure are wireless network in Kubuntu 9.04,  but it has always worked without problems in Ubuntu.  Do you need to do anything special?  I navigated to "network settings -> wireless" and found my wireless access point by "scan", but I cannot activate it23:00
Haza1__Quick question. How do i list all the ports that are open and listening on my system via the terminal?23:07
Cycomis it possible to stream video from an sftp server to something like Dragon?  I was able to do this in gnome, but haven't been able to figure it out in KDE.  It seems that dolphin (or whatever app manages this) attempts to copy the entire file to temp first.23:07
CycomHaza1__: I think it's netstat...23:07
CycomHaza1__: if you're looking for actual open ports, you can always use nmap to portscan yourself.23:07
mjrclarkkalidar: lspci as before, in fact your message at 22:11:48 shows your sound card info23:08
Haza1__Cycom: Thank you :)23:09
Haza1__Cycom: Can i pass netstat an argument to check and see if anything is listening on a certain port?23:10
=== kurumin is now known as kurumin_
CycomHaza1__: I beleive so, can't remember what argument though.23:15
mjrclarkHazal__: man page doesn't say anything other than -l for listening, could pass the huge output to | grep portnumber23:21
Cycombut yeah, is it possible to play media files over sftp?23:33
robinrif the player understands the sftp protocol, why not?23:34
robinrbut, my guess is that few if any does23:35
guestI have duel displays set up and I cant figure out for the life of me how to move the panel to the other display.23:36
Cycomrobinr: in gnome they had gvfs handle it, at least in 8.10, so just about anything could be played even if the player doesn't understand the proto.23:37

robinrguest: you need to set up xinerame, sometimes called twinview for that23:38
robinrs/xinerama23:38
guestyea I have twinview setup all ready23:38
robinrCycom: if the player supports the gvfs23:38
frogonwheelsguest presumably youcan move windows across displays23:38
guestyup23:38
robinr(and kio slaves for KDE)23:38
Cycomrobinr: does vlc support gvfs?23:39
frogonwheelsguest in kde 4.2 you can definitely move the panel across displays23:39
josh-lweird gimp toolbox isnt showing in the taskmanager23:39
guestfrogonwheels:span across both displays?23:39
robinrguest: try to look for something like "primary screen" in the settings23:40
frogonwheelsguest. possibly, but not what I meant.23:40
guestyea it has my wide screen as the primary but it shows up on the secondary23:40
frogonwheelsguest you can always add a panel to the primary23:40
frogonwheelsguest:  I've just upgraded to 4.2 - can't remember how you move the panel to different edges in 4.1 um..23:41
frogonwheelswhen you select the pallet for the panel,  is there a 'move' command shown?23:42
guestfrogonwheels: im on 4.2 also23:42
frogonwheelsguest cool.   then click the pallette for the panel and click and drage on 'move edge'23:43
frogonwheelsdrage=drag23:43
frogonwheelsDoes that makes sense?23:44
guestfrogonwheels: maybe its the task manager im talking about. The bar that goes accross the bottom of the screen.23:44
frogonwheels.. and there's that little pallete drop thing that edits the panel (that contains the task manager)23:45
frogonwheels(drop shape in a semi-circle - click that)23:45
frogonwheelsI think of it as a paint palette - but that might not be the idea!?23:45
guestfrogonwheels: ok23:45
frogonwheelsthe one for the panel, not for the desktop.23:46
frogonwheels(it's a semi-circle on the panel, actually :))23:46
josh-lweird gimp toolbox isnt showing in the taskmanager23:48
frogonwheelsjosh-l: there's an option somewhere to obey the hint to hide windows from the taskmanager.23:49
frogonwheelsjosh-l: I suspect the gimp toolbox has the 'don't show me in the taskmanager' hint.. and you have the option ticked23:49
josh-lfrogonwheels: would that be in settings then?23:49
josh-li mean system settings23:49
frogonwheelsjosh-l: Yep. somewhere there.23:49
josh-lk thx23:49
guestfrogonwheels: nope23:50
frogonwheelsas in you can't find the 'move edge' button?23:50
guestcant find it23:50

phoenixz_For one, we're both missing a large bunch of applets (no battery monitor anymore, and the supposed to be there wifi network applet isnt there either23:57
frogonwheelsguest you click on the little palette thing in the orange circle.. and you see that config panel pop down23:57
frogonwheelsguest: then you click-drag the /Screen Edge/ button (in blue circle)23:58
