BUGabundoguud night guys00:42
alechi.  Could someone help me please?00:52
alecFor whatever reason , I can't restart X anymore by using key combo: "Ctrl-Alt-backspace".00:52
alecUSed to work but I think it's been deactivated now.00:53
alecdoes anyone know the answer to this?00:53
screamalec,00:53
devansHey guys, I am having a really ODD problem with connecting to a Microsoft VPN via PPTP using any method under Ubuntu Jaunty.  I know Jaunty is in beta, but the odd thing is, I have been connecting fine through Network Manger at my home - I have gone to my parents for the weekend and their setup to the internet is the same and it just fails a look in the logs and it just says pppd hangup.. I have googled my arse off and tried setting it up manually with00:53
devansthe same results.  The network setup is, laptop (vpn client) ---->  adsl wifi router ---->  internet -----> work vpn server.  It is the same at my house and I connect fine, here at my parents no luck.  Any idea what could be going wrong ?00:53
screamThere is a solution to this...00:53
screamalec, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace is now disabled, to reduce issues experienced by users who accidentally trigger the key combo. Users who do want this function can enable it in their xorg.conf, or via the command dontzap --disable.00:53
alecI did try the whole DONTZAP thing but it didn't work.  MAybe I did it wrong.  Woudl you mind showing me the correct syntax that I put in the xorg.conf file?00:54
devansI don't like the fact they disabled it, silly idea.00:54
devans:(00:54
aleci really liked being able to use this feature.00:54
alecit was NICE.00:54
devansHave any of you had issues with PPTP connections using NetworkManager ?00:55
screamalec, when you issued the don'tzap command, did you place "sudo" in front of it?00:55
QPrimedevans: is the router at your parents house passing gre properly?00:55
tvih-any ideas why graphical interface gets stuck with black screen + loading cursor on startup? mainly still using intrepid, but some packages from jaunty due to having to use kernel from it.00:55
devansalec, It is nice, its part of unix history.  LOL.  Just enable it via the xorg.conf.00:55
alecwell, I opened term and typed sudo su00:55
alecthen pass00:55
alecthen opened xorg.conf00:55
_VIM_2dont use su00:55
_VIM_2just sudo00:55
screamtry...00:55
scream"sudo dontzap --disable"00:55
alecthen found the <can't remember> section and added Option DONTZAP "FALSE"00:55
alecok00:56
devansQPrime, Ok, the router at my house is a crappy soho isp bundled siemens router.. They router at my parents house is a linksys router.  I logged onto the linksys route rmanagement page and disabled all the functioanlity in the sense of firewall etc.  It does not mention anything about GRE.  I can't see it doing anything to the GRE packets though.00:56
alecpardon my ignorance here... where do I insert this sudo dontzap --disable cmd?  In x directly?00:56
tvih-bleh. guess I'll just try updating gnome to jaunty to see if that helps.00:56
alecx=xterm00:57
screamalec, the command will need to be issues via the terminal00:57
alecscream  I did that./00:57
screamApplications -> Accessories -> Terminal00:57
devansQPrime, How can I troubleshoot this?00:57
alecsaid command not found00:57
screamrestart x and see if the combo is re enabled.00:57
screamoh ok00:57
screamYou may have to add it to the conf, but I'm not sure the command yet.00:58
QPrimedevans: likely yo be a router/isp issue rather than a Jaunty issue.  we can discuss in #ubuntu-offtopic if you want.00:58
aleclemme look for a sec.00:58
alecin my xorg.00:58
screamhttp://answers,launchpad.net00:58
devansQPrime, If I can narrow it down to the router then i can replace it.. although i highly doubt its the router mangling the GRE packets.  I guess its something to do with the client..00:58
screammay be of help.00:58
screamThat is where I ususally go.00:58
devansQPrime, thank you let me join00:58
alecok00:58
screamhttps://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+addquestion00:59
screamactually00:59
alecScream.. .what abotu this...00:59
alecin xorg.conf, then in Section "Server Layout" O put     Option         "DontZap" "disable"00:59
alecO put = I put01:00
maccam-jauntyare there any known bugs with graphics when running jaunty under virtualization?01:01
crdlbalec: 'sudo dontzap --disable' is easier :)01:02
alecI tried that and it said DONTZAP command not found01:02
maccam-jauntyalec: sudo apt-get install dontzap01:02
alechmmm01:02
alec cool.01:02
aleclet's see.01:02
crdlbalso, it's not DONTZAP :)01:03
aleccouldnt find packg DONRZAP01:03
maccam-jauntythat too01:03
alecDONTZAP01:03
alecwhat is it01:03
alec?01:03
maccam-jauntycase matters, and it's lowercase01:03
crdlbwhy are you capitalizing it?01:03
alecok sorry   dontzap01:03
maccam-jauntyalec: what are you typing in the terminal?01:04
_VIM_2just copy and paste this: sudo apt-get install dontzap && sudo dontzap --disable01:04
alecI only capitalized so it would stand out as a command, sorry.01:04
crdlbthat's not a good idea on a case-sensitive OS :)01:04
aleccould find package dontzap01:04
alecnext?01:04
_VIM_2enable all your repos01:04
crdlb!info dontzap01:04
ubottudontzap (source: dontzap): Command line tool to set the DontZap option in xorg.conf. In component main, is optional. Version 0.1.2 (jaunty), package size 6 kB, installed size 124 kB01:04
crdlbit's in main ...01:05
_VIM_2hmmm01:05
_VIM_2find a .deb then?01:05
alecI thought all repos were activated.01:05
alecis there a cmd line quicky way to do this?01:05
maccam-jauntyalec: you're using jaunty right?01:05
alecIbex01:05
alec9.1001:06
alec8.1001:06
maccam-jauntythat would be why01:06
alecoh yeah?01:06
_VIM_2lol01:06
maccam-jauntyyou don't use dontzap in 8.1001:06
alecdoh!01:06
alecok.01:06
alecdarn01:06
maccam-jauntythis channel is for the next version of ubuntu, 9.04 jaunty01:06
alecso the question is then... is it even possible to RE-ACTVATE ctrl-alt-backspace in 8.1001:06
alec?01:06
maccam-jauntyctrl alt backspace is active in 8.1001:06
alecsorry... sCream told me to come here.01:07
maccam-jauntyfor support of current ubuntu releases, go to #ubuntu01:07
maccam-jauntywhy do you think you need to activate that key combo?01:07
alecI told him i was using ibex.  BUT.. to be honest, I didn't even know 9.04 was out and I'm really excited about that.01:07
maccam-jauntyit's not out yet01:07
maccam-jauntyit comes out in a month01:07
alecI'd like to activate it because, simply, it's awesome to be able to make a change to, for example, xorg and then restart x without having to reboot machine.01:08
maccam-jauntyalec: that is the default behavior in 8.1001:08
alecdoesn't come out yet huh?01:08
alecDEACTIVATED is default?01:08
alecmaccam?  deactivated is default in 8.10?01:08
maccam-jauntyif it's not working, then your keyboard is probably not being recognized correctly, and your control or alt key is not being recognized01:08
maccam-jauntyctrl alt backspace works by default in 8.10 and earlier01:09
alechmm.. that's a thought. It's a simple, crappy Dynex keyboard.01:09
alecwhat would he best route be in sorting the correct drivers?01:09
alecshould I jsut dink around with the different drivers that are available?01:10
maccam-jauntynot exactly01:10
maccam-jauntyyou either need to map a key, or change your keyboard layout01:10
alecis that possible thru the GUI?01:10
khearalec: killing x isn't necessarily a safe way to restart it, when you can restart it properly.01:10
alecsomething like... System>Administration>Keyboard or something?01:10
alecok.. what do you recommend?>01:11
maccam-jauntyalec: yes system-administration->keyboard01:11
maccam-jauntyalec: generally you use that key combo to restart a locked up X. to restart it safely, hit ctrl alt f1, log in, and sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart01:12
alecBTW, u guys have been a HUGE help and I really appreciate your patience and such.  FIRST TIMER HERE.  TONIGHT.01:12
ethana2I imported my firefox settings from my 8.1001:12
maccam-jauntyto get back to the gui, you might have to hit ctrl alt f7 or f801:12
ethana2it didn't get any of them, but it did tell firefox that java and flash were already installed01:12
ethana2so, how do I tell firefox that it doesn't have anything?01:12
ethana2delete .mozilla?01:13
alecmaccam... ok.01:13
* ethana2 deletes .mozilla01:13
alecBTW, where do I go for Ibex ???s?01:13
maccam-jaunty#ubuntu01:13
alecI went there and this guy told me to come here./01:13
alecthanks.01:14
maccam-jauntyhe made a mistake because you were talking about enabling ctrl alt backspace01:14
ethana2blast, I removed .mozilla, but it still isn't offering to install flash for me01:14
aleci see.01:14
alecthanks so much guys(and girls?).01:14
alecsee you SOON!01:15

h00kBeastie, nobody forced you to install anything01:55
h00kBeastie, Beta's are generally buggy, thats why they're beta.01:56
CycomBeastie: dude, you installed a BETA of ubuntu THE DAY AFTER THE BETA WAS RELEASED.01:57
CycomBeastie: what's next, you're going to enter an drug trial and complain about the side effects that the warn you about?01:57

ubottuLaunchpad bug 321528 in e2fsprogs "ext4 defrag / defragment tool in Jaunty - include" [Wishlist,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/32152802:07
Volkodavsamba's site has tons of sample configs02:07
mtholdensshey on jaunty beta i can't get effects to work, can it not work on a 64 bit os, do i have to download the 32 bit instead?02:07
Wortmanit was in an alpha release I tried a few weeks ago idk02:07
tvih-well. that was unexpected. system booted up fine after upgrading to jaunty, but it appears mouse now doesn't work :D neither touchpad nor separate usb mouse02:08
QPrimefunkyHat: vbox addons for a Jaunty guest?02:08
funkyHatQPrime: yeah02:08

tvih-damn, i want my mouse working again. hehe.02:27
johninlexI have a question I know this is not the best room but the normal #ubuntu is not able to answer02:28
tvih-what in jaunty could've disabled the mouse anyway. it wasn't the kernel.02:28
funkyHatjohninlex: if it's about jaunty ask away, if not try #ubuntu-offtopic02:28
ethana2So the default flash plugin for x64 is the x32 one with ia32libs?02:29
johninlexis video part of xorg, or how can I restore my video02:29
lacquihello all02:29

lacquinow i can't load x02:29
johninlexif I could find out I would do the searching and fix it but not sure where to start02:29
lacquiis there a way to restore an upgrade?02:29
tvih-lacqui, just run apt-get dist-upgrade i guess02:30
ethana2lacqui: boot into the recovery terminal02:31
ethana2lacqui: if you try to run apt-get upgrade, it should complain and tell you what to do to fix your OS02:31

Daskreechwhat's the deal with Gnome and GTk moving forward03:50
Daskreech Gnome 2.30 is going to be GNome 3.003:50
crdlbright03:50
DaskreechIs that going to be on libgtk3 ?03:50
crdlbyes, or at least there will be a gtk3 soon03:50
crdlbit will mainly just break ABI by making more stuff private03:50
DaskreechSo Gnome 3.0 will fora while be gtk2 possibly?03:50
crdlbcurrently, there is quite a bit of direct struct access in gtk+ api usage, which makes internal changes in gtk very difficult03:51
crdlbno, gtk+-3.0 will not be a big change03:51
billybigrigger_so if i need gtk 2.6+ im screwed?03:51

billybigrigger_anyone here successfully compiled the new phoronix test suite 1.8 with gui?03:52
crdlbDaskreech: for what?03:52
Daskreechbig changes03:53
crdlbthe gtk api is pretty good imho, it's mainly the internals that are getting stale03:53
billybigrigger_the gui requires me to compile php-gtk and php-gtk depends on GTK+ 2.6.9 or greater03:53
crdlbso by sealing up the API, they can rework in the 3.x series03:53
billybigrigger_crdlb, i should be good to go that way then?03:53
crdlbbillybigrigger_: seriously? what do you have that uses php-gtk?03:53

moparisthebestI can scan and see all of the wireless networks, but connections always fail, and knetworkmanager doesn't even try04:10
pirateyes, IntuitiveNipple04:11
IntuitiveNipplepirate: the thing to look for is clean restart (all kernel times are 00000.0000] - the crash would be just before that04:11
IntuitiveNipplemoparisthebest: there was an issue I saw talked about yesterday with knetwork plasmoid or whatever it's called failing authentication. The recommendation was to use the alternative, but I don't recall what that was04:12

moparisthebesti don't have wpa, it's open, so it doesn't look like it applies to me, thanks though04:16

moparisthebestno, i can see it04:17

IntuitiveNipplepirate: It doesn't seem as if that instance of the freeze captured anything useful in kern.log. Now you know roughly what time it happened though (21:36:30) you can look at that time-point in other logs and see if any of them have recorded anything after that time and if so, whether it gives any clues.04:19

dtchenwell, it doesn't exactly display a dialog upon launch04:53
dtchenit just disappears into the notification area04:53
DanaGOh, and apparently the notification area is not for.... update..... notifications.  =P04:53
ethana2how do I launch gnome-volume-control-pulse?04:54
DanaGInstead, you get malware-esque behavior.04:54
ethana2I installed the package04:54
ethana2but it says command not found04:54
ethana2oh04:54
ethana2my headset just powered down04:54
ethana2that sounded cool04:54
ethana2but I was not expecting it.04:54
ethana2...so now I'm confused04:57
ethana2I've got three different thingies installed now, and I don't know which one to use04:58
ethana2IntuitiveNipple: any thoughts?04:59
IntuitiveNippledtchen's the expert on this stuff :p05:00
ethana2ah, dtchen?05:00
ethana2I have gnome-volume-control-pulse installed, how do I run it?05:01
dtchenjust click the speaker icon in the notification area and choose Volume Control05:01
dtcheni strongly recommend you use pavucontrol, however05:01
ethana2ok, but what then?05:01
crdlbdpkg -L gnome-volume-control-pulse :)05:01
ethana2I don't see my bluetooth headset in there05:02
crdlbI can't believe it's not actually an applet :/05:02
dtchenwell, bluetooth pairing is currently broken in pa05:02
ethana2....oh.05:02
ethana2I though that was fixed in Jaunty05:02
ethana2hmm05:02
dtchenwell, unless someone went and fixed it behind my back...05:02
dtchen(which would be great, but i kinda doubt it)05:03
ethana2heh05:03
dtchenbug 32728405:03

ethana2thanks, dontzap!  I had to remove the battery from my laptop and pull the power05:08
* ethana2 disables05:08
crdlbpower button?05:08
ethana2I could have held it down for 8 seconds, yes05:10
ethana2meh05:10
crdlbthat seems better than pulling out the battery, tbh05:10
ethana2hmm05:10
ethana2yeah, I guess05:10
crdlbalso, magic sysrq?05:10
ethana2I don't memorize crap like that05:10
* ethana2 restarts session to apply xorg changes05:11
* crdlb has a feelin c-a-b wouldn't have worked anyway :)05:11
crdlbfeeling*05:12
ethana2k, enabled05:12
ethana2oh, the mouse was responsive05:12
ethana2...but none of the UI was.05:12
crdlboh, then alt+sysrq+k is your friend05:12
ethana2like I said05:12
ethana2I don't memorize stuff like that05:12
crdlband alt+sysrq+r may even allow you to vt switch and avoid killing X05:12
crdlbit's useful, so you should :)05:13
ethana2I suppose I /am/ on a beta release05:13
ethana2as usual, I blame nVidia05:13
holyscottdoes anyone have a link with anyinformation on what exactly the python problem was?05:16
crdlbbug 34946705:17
ubottuLaunchpad bug 349467 in python2.6 "Many python programs fail with: "undefined symbol: PyUnicodeUCS4_DecodeUTF8"" [Critical,Fix released] https://launchpad.net/bugs/34946705:17
holyscottthank you05:18
crdlbbasically python accidentally got compiled with the wrong unicode implementation (2 bytes per char instead of 4), and the two are not compatible05:18
holyscottwould that be why python was using so much memory while trying to get updates lat night?05:19
crdlbthe bad package didn't hit until early this morning, iirc05:20
holyscotthow would i know if I have the new fix yet?05:20
crdlbit mainly just broke update-manager :)05:20
crdlbcan you use update-manager?05:20
crdlb(or any other pygtk app)05:20
holyscottyeah, it was slow earlier, but I didn't know if it was just bogged down05:21
holyscottno error messages or I would have paniced05:21
crdlbit wouldn't have started at all05:21
holyscottcan I ask one other question05:21
holyscotton a netbook, I have linux mint, is there an apt-get command that would take me into basically a kde 4.2.1 install?05:22
holyscottor am I better off doing a new clean install..05:22
crdlbno idea, but this isn't a mint channel05:22
histoYou guys still having trouble with the repos?05:23
histoholyscott: is mint based of ubuntu?05:24
crdlbit is05:24
histoholyscott: then just install kubuntu-desktop05:24
crdlbactually, they might have switched back to debian05:24
histoThis computer is really agravating me. Can't run xubuntu disk on it it kernel panics. but I can boot knoppix.05:24
centaur5I just downloaded the netbook remix beta and booted it in virtualbox but I don't see the categorized desktop theme screenshots show. Is it just not complete?05:25
histoWTF why are the repos all messed up for jaunty?05:28
histoThis is so annoying.05:30
histoThree bad signature files in a row from the repo05:32
histoCorrupt packages05:32
histoI can't figure otu why this is happening from the mini.iso05:32
thefuzzballhello, i have an apple keyboard and after installing vmware workstation my modifier keys don't work, hence the lack of captials ;d05:35
J-a-k-ehey, is there anyone here who has a creative sound card specificity from the x-fi product line? I'm just wondering if sound quality is up to scratch compared to windows05:37
thefuzzballi edited /etc/vmware/config and enabled xkeymap.nokeycodeMap because the arrow keys weren't working in the vm, the arrow keys now work but i can't use my modifer keys at all...05:37
picklesworthAugh the "Unmounting Device" popup appears BENEATH the open window?!05:41
picklesworthWhat madness is that?05:41
mtholdensshow can i change the file permissions to access files in music, documents, downloads on my mac partition from ubuntu?05:42
tonyyarussoUh, so I just did a fresh install of the beta, and then ran apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, and I'm getting the following:  [<kernel stamp numbers>] BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 61s! [updatedb.mocat:3907]  What do I do?05:46
tonyyarussos/mocat/mlocat/05:46
thefuzzballNever Mind, running 'setxkbmap' fixes the problem, at least temporarily :D05:47
IntuitiveNippletonyyarusso: search for an existing, or possibly file a new, bug report05:48
thefuzzballDoes anyone know if fglrx is working in Jaunty?05:48
=== thefuzzball is now known as TheFuzzball
sparrmount: unknown filesystem type 'vfat'  <--  any easy fixes for this?05:48

billybigrigger_anyone aware of a good gui temperature monitor that may or may not rely on lm-sensors?05:52
tonyyarussobillybigrigger_: I use computertemp, which is a gnome applet05:53
billybigrigger_tonyyarusso, does it make a menu entry somewhere?05:55
billybigrigger_tonyyarusso, or do i have to make one?05:55
tonyyarussobillybigrigger_: Why would it have a menu entry?05:55
billybigrigger_oh, its an applet05:55
billybigrigger_my bad :P didnt read05:55
billybigrigger_tonyyarusso, can you change the name of the temps?05:57
tonyyarussobillybigrigger_: They don't have names.05:57
billybigrigger_hwmon005:58
homerhomeranyone tried fglrx 9.3 with with the Jaunty?05:58
billybigrigger_when i mouse over the applet, i see hwmon0 (1) hwmon (2) and (3) (4) which i think is my core temps from lm-sensors, then i see hwmon1 (1) (2) (3) which is motherboard and cpu temps05:59
histohomerhomer: can't even install it with my ati card in the box so05:59
homerhomerI'm having a s3/sleep issue with Intrepid and was hoping that maybe it's not happing with the Jaunty05:59
homerhomeroh damn05:59
homerhomerhisto: your card too old?05:59
histoI think so05:59
homerhomerhmm05:59
histoIt just kernel panics with my ati card in the box. Both intrepid and jaunty06:00
homerhomerouch06:00
histoI'm installing debian now to see if they don't have the issues with the intel onboard video that ubuntu does06:00
jamiejackson<jamiejackson> I installed jaunty to usb stick. updated via update mgr, rebooted, now I'm at some initramfs prompt. what do I do now?06:00
homerhomerhisto: how far during the boot do you get with your ATI card?06:01
histoNo where its a command line system So I can't even catch where it starts throwing a kernel panic. But keep in mind this is a REALLY old ATI card06:01
homerhomerhmm06:01
histoati rage XL 64mb or vram06:01
histoYou prolly won't have the issues i am.06:02
homerhomeryeah, no I don't06:02
jamiejacksonupdate mgr showed some prob with status /initrd.img or something like that if it matters06:02
histoAll i'm trying to do is get sdlmame running with half way decent performance.06:02
histoITs horrible with the intel card. So i'm trying a different distro now.06:03
zirodayjamiejackson: can you boot into an older kernel?06:03
jamiejacksonircing from phone since systems hoses06:05
jamiejacksonwhat is this initramfs prompt, anyway?06:06
homerhomerhisto: if your really interested in finding out that Kernel panic you can redirect error message out of a serial port at grub06:09
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: When the system boots the first thing that happens is that the boot-loader (GRUB) find and loads the kernel image from /boot/. It also loads an initial-RAM-disk image (initrd) that contains scripts, additional modules, and essential services to get drivers loaded and the system configured. After it is done it starts /sbin/init which finishes off the boot process.06:09
homerhomerhisto:  this website explains how to do it, http://geco.phys.columbia.edu/~jrollins/howtos/serial_console.html06:10
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: If something goes wrong during the initrd phase and the script stops/fails, you'll be 'dropped' to a minimal shell environment provided by 'busybox'06:10
homerhomerhisto: you basically add "console=tty0 console=ttyS0,115200n8 " to the grub boot menu06:10
tonyyarussowhere did the epiphany-webkit packages go?06:11
homerhomerand then when it panics you can catch it with another computer threw the serial port06:11
IntuitiveNipplehomerhomer: he could also use netconsole (provided the network device module is in the initrd)06:11
homerhomerIntuitiveNipple: yeah, that works too if it doesn't kpanic to before that06:12
jamiejacksonthx for expl nipple. now how might I recover?06:14
jamiejacksonI see no /boot dir from this prompt, don't know if I'm supposed to06:14
jamiejacksonI should be able to update a usb stick install correct?06:17
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: no, you're 'inside' the ram-disk image06:19
jamiejacksonoh, bah. SOL?06:20
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: you reported that whilst upgrading there was a report that the initrd image had a problem... without knowing what that was it is hard to know how to proceed. It could be something easy like no space left on the /boot/ device for the image06:20
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: you 'should' be able to mount the real root file-system from the initrd and explore it using 'ls' and other tools to check the basics06:21
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: Give me a moment... I'll do a PXE netboot here on one of the notebooks and break at the initrd stage, that way I may be able to test and suggest some commands to help you diagnose the issue.06:22
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: But, I suspect your best bet(if you have one) is to boot the system using a live-CD since then you can use IRC to pastebin information06:22
jamiejacksonahh okay. bbiab then06:23
IntuitiveNipplehang on for a moment... let me try the initrd here06:23
jamiejacksonk06:24
IntuitiveNippleright, first thing, lets check what kernel command-line was. Look at it for the "initrd=..." setting so we know what it has loaded06:25
IntuitiveNippledo: cat /proc/cmdline06:25
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: Then, check to see if udev managed to start populating devices. look for the /dev/sd* entries. do: ls /dev/sd*06:28
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: If the /dev/sd* nodes have been created you should be able to mount the real root file-system (if you know which partition it is in)06:29
jamiejacksonk so cat=(this is gonna take a while)06:31
IntuitiveNipplejust report the filename of the initrd=... bit06:31
IntuitiveNippleit'll be something like /boot/initrd.img-<version-number>06:32
IntuitiveNippleall we need is the version number, assuming the initrd= entry is there?06:32
jamiejackson @/casper/initrd.gz06:32
IntuitiveNippleIt's a live-CD image ?06:32
IntuitiveNippleI thought, when you said you'd installed it to a USB stick, you'd installed the OS. That mention of casper indicates a bootable live-CD image06:33
jamiejacksonmy intent was to have ubuntu ona usb stick. I used ubuntus feature to do that...06:33
IntuitiveNippleThe System > Administration > USB Startup Disk Creator ?06:34
jamiejacksonand when it booted I chose the live cd option then updated.06:34
jamiejacksonyes06:34
jamiejacksonwrong approach?06:34
IntuitiveNippleHmmm... to be frank, I've never tried updating a live-CD image and I don't *think* it would work since the actual live system is inside a highly compressed read-only squashfs file-system image.06:35
IntuitiveNippleHowever, the good news might be that the update you did would only have applied to the live-CD instance in RAM and shouldn't have written anything to the USB image itself, unless you had something strangely configured06:36
cwillu_clonehardlock during updates, and now the only 2.6.28 series kernel complains of 'invalid or unsupported executable format'06:36
* cwillu_clone cheers :)06:36
IntuitiveNippletherefore in *theory* the failed boot may not be related to the updates :) ... not that this helps figure out why it failed!06:36
jamiejacksonno strange config. just persistence, fwiw06:36
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: x86_64 on x86 maybe?06:37
jamiejacksonis there a better/more updatable appproach to ubuntu on a stick?06:37
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: OK, the only thing I can think is the USB stick's /casper/ directory files have somehow been corrupted during your last session06:37
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, nope06:38
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: You could install to the stick in the same way as you would to a hard disk... it needs some care at the installing GRUB boot-loader stage to ensure GRUB writes to the USB device not the system's hard disk, but it would give you effectively a hard-disk installation on the stick06:38
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: at what point does that error occur?06:38
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, the moment I hit enter in grub06:39
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: ouch!06:39
danbeckSound is broken for netbook remix.  Is there any info anywhere that describes a fix?06:39
jamiejacksonany cons aside from setup care?06:39
jamiejacksoncare during setup that is06:40
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: Does that system have more than one hard-disk or boot device?06:40
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, several drives, only one bootable, and it's booting the right one afaict06:40
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: The only thing missing would be the availability of the ubiquity installer on the desktop.06:40
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: that error usually occurs when the grub meny root (hd0,0) etc are wrong06:41
danbeckAlso, update manager shows about 149mb of updates available.  Seems high for a version that was just rolled today.  Is that right?06:41
dtchendanbeck: yes, and they're all necessary.06:41
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: which can be affected by a change in BIOS boot-order settings06:41
danbeckThanks dtchen06:41
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, nah, hardware hasn't changed in this machine in 8 months06:41
dtchendanbeck: i.e., please don't ask about sound issues until after rebooting into -11.38 :)06:41
jamiejacksonok ill just redo it.06:42
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: focus on the root entries in grub06:42
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, it's probably an ext4 related screwup, although I don't like how it broke the previously bootable kernel06:42
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, they're not the problem, trust me06:42
danbeck11.38?  I'm sorry, what is that?06:42
IntuitiveNipplecwillu_clone: you've got /boot/ on an ext4 ?06:42
dtchendanbeck: linux-image-2.6.28-11-generic06:42
danbeckah, ok, thanks.06:42
cwillu_cloneIntuitiveNipple, /boot is on /, it's not a seperate partition, and yes, I'm figuring that grub didn't actually get updated when I reinstalled grub06:43
danbeckdtchen, I see it in the list, thank you.06:43
jamiejacksonusb stick should have no swap partition, right?06:43
IntuitiveNipplejamiejackson: probably not, no :)06:44
jamiejacksonokay. ill set up a fat32 and a ext2 and install in the latter.06:45
ethana2where does jaunty store its screensaver executables?07:01
ethana2It seems this driver has redirected OpenGL, I want to use a 3d screensaver as a desktop background07:02
ethana2but I forgot where they are07:02
crdlb/usr/lib/xscreensaver/07:03
ethana2crdlb: thank you very much07:03
holyscottis there an easy way to make the grub have a background image like some distros do?07:03
ethana2I tried to tell nautilus not to draw my desktop07:08
ethana2it sent something into a race condition and I had to kill X07:08
ethana2it's like X doesn't know what on earth to do without nautilus drawing the desktop07:08
ethana2crdlb: would you know how I can make it not do that?07:08
ethana2if I unset that key, instant race condition07:09
crdlbI would have to know why that's happening first :)07:10
ethana2hmm07:10
ethana2probably an anti-crash mechanism07:10
ethana2so if nautilus goes down, it restarts it quickly07:10
ethana2but it keeps checking that key, and it says not to07:10
ethana2but it has to, but it can't, cause the key says not to07:11
ethana2that's my bet07:11
crdlbexcept nautilus shouldn't crash in that case but cleanly exit07:11
crdlband I'm pretty sure gnome-session won't keep respawning a process forever07:12
ethana2maybe it doesn't check for crashes07:12
ethana2maybe it says--  'is nautilus running'?07:12
ethana2no?, must have crashed07:12
ethana2AHA07:13
crdlbkeep a nautilus window open to test07:13
ethana2If I have another nauti--07:13
ethana2yes I did07:13
ethana2and it doesn't race.07:13
norenhi everyone07:13
ethana2crdlb: so I've got a bug07:13
crdlbactually, since nautilus handles some important things now (volume mounting), it should stay running even if it's not drawing the desktop07:13
crdlbheh, same happens here07:14
crdlbcome on people, add sanity checks!07:15
ethana2sure glad I disabled dontzap07:15
ethana2I've used it like 20 times already today07:15
* ethana2 hugs C-A-B07:15
crdlbsame happens here07:15
crdlbalthough I can easily enable it07:15
crdlbmy taskbar just starts filling up with 'starting file manager'07:16
ethana2some other guy had a similar problem, if I recall07:16
crdlbI wonder if it's caused by that huge "fix session saving" patch07:18
SimonKitchingHi. I'm trying to run the suspend/resume test script. Resume is working fine on this machine, but it isn't auto-waking after the script suspends it. It stays suspended until I trigger resume manually. Any suggestions?07:19
ethana2whoa, the screensavers are all .xml files now instead of executables07:20
ethana2how do I run one in the root window?07:20
crdlbthe executables are in /usr/lib/xscreensaver/07:21
IntuitiveNippleSimonKitching: does the PC support an RTC alarm?07:21
ethana2crdlb: but they're .xml files, not executables07:22
ethana2unless .xml files can be executable..07:22
* ethana2 checks07:22
crdlbethana2: not in that directory07:22
ethana2ohhhhh07:22
ethana2whoops.07:22
ethana2sorry about that, thank you07:22
ethana2aha, excellent.07:22
SimonKitchingIntuitiveNipple: seems so. dmesg reports "[    2.977600] rtc0: alarms up to one month, y3k, 114 bytes nvram, hpet irqs"07:23
IntuitiveNippleSimonKitching:  I'm not too sure... the things I'd be checking is that wake is enabled on the device07:24
SimonKitchingYou mean in bios settings?07:24
SandGorgondoes nVidia work in jaunty with all desktop effects?07:27
ethana2I have nVidia07:27
ethana2can't get a 3d screensaver to work as my desktop background in compiz07:27
ethana2but gnome-do docky works fine otherwise07:27
SandGorgonethana2: what about the other effects like the cube, etc... actually I'm more worried about playing Warcraft!07:27
ethana2I don't use cube07:28
ethana2..nor have I ever played Warcraft07:28
ethana2Google earth and glxgears work in combination with the shift switcher and stuff07:28
ethana2I was impressed07:28
SandGorgonoh... ok... thanks07:28
IntuitiveNippleSimonKitching: No, in linux. Use this scriptlet to discover the devices that can do wakeup and their state:07:28
IntuitiveNippleOLDIFS=$IFS; IFS=$'\n'; find /sys -name wakeup | while read node; do STATUS=$(cat $node); [ ! -z "$STATUS" ] && echo "$node $STATUS"; done; IFS=$OLDIFS07:29
* ethana2 gives up on his crazy flurry desktop background dream07:30
ethana2for the time being07:30
SimonKitchingIntuitiveNipple: ok, that script reports a number of devices disabled, including "/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:01.0/power/wakeup disabled". Using lspci that is reported as "PCI Bridge Intel 945GM... Root Port" which seems reasonably important. About 50% of devices are reported "disabled", and 50% reported "enabled". Do I need to "enable" them, or does this just mean auto-wake is not possible on this machine?07:42
CosmiChaosI accidentially run "sudo firefox", now my bookmarks are lost, my back/forward buttons do not wrk, every startup the plugin websites are loaded (first start), and nothing i can import or setup. everythings crappy, any ideas what did  go wrng r how to fix?07:46

jscinozso08:05
jscinozi think the version of brasero in jaunty is broken, when i try to burn a dvd it says it cannot burn with the current set of plugins, no idea why though08:06
simion314hi, what sound system is used in kubuntu 9.04? any ideea how to restart it? it crashes on me and i want to restart it without rebooting08:09
SimonKitchingCosmiChaos: maybe some critical files in your home dir are now owned by root, and so cannot be read by your ordinary user? I would have a look in ~/.mozilla or ~/.gnome2 for root-owned files. The "find" command may be useful here (man find).08:10
CosmiChaosSimonKitching: thanks chown me:me .mozilla -R did it08:13
chris062689I could really use your guys help.08:20
chris062689I recently updated; and for some reason my keyboard language apparently switched.08:21
chris062689So I can't even login anymore, it's appearing in Islamic characters, so it won't recognize my username / password.08:21
chris062689I'm on a Jaunty Live CD right now, the beta, is there any way to manually go in and change the default keyboard layout?08:21
simion314chris062689: if you go in tty1 using ctrl+alt+f1 or recovery mode do you have the same strange layout?08:26
chris062689I went into tty1 and I didn't have the same character layout, they were weird arrows and stuff08:26
chris062689It may just be because the lack of islamic character in the console *shrugS*08:26
chris062689Isn't there a file I can just manually edit simion314?08:27
simion314chris062689: i have no ideea , you can create an other user and try login with it08:28
simion314try the command adduser08:28
simion314as root08:28
chris062689but if I'm typing in islamic characters, I couldn't even do that.08:28
simion314but firts google this maybe is a fix08:28
chris062689I've tried googling08:29
chris062689All they say is how to do it from the command line08:29

vbgunzim curious because I haven't done it in a while. I believe one of the things that helped me with my pulseaudio issues was sudo apt-get install pulseaudio*14:34
vbgunzthat installed a flood of pulseaudio packages but remember having very few problems with it ever since though if it goes down on me, I sort of expect it :(14:35
aurel42;)14:35
aurel42Does pulseaudio give you more than one channel (master) to set the volume for?14:35
vbgunzaurel42: no, I believe just one master14:36
aurel42When I want to adjust the channels the audio card offers (PCM etc.), I need to kill pulseaudio.14:36
aurel42...and use alsamixer14:36
aurel42I bet that's a reason for a lot of audio problems, when PCM is muted and there's no simple way to unmute it for a mouse user.14:37
aurel42But that's not a Jaunty problem, so probably off-topic. :D14:38
vbgunzI haven't played with pulseaudio in about 2 months I'd say. I think the devs been pretty good on keeping it running.14:38

Beastielooks like kde on kubuntu 64 is got issues15:17
Beastieinstalliung lxde as a fall back15:17
vbgunzBeastie: damn, I am on Kubuntu Jaunty AMD 64. I got 125 updates and am asked to reboot. :/15:17
Beastieyeah thats the issue15:18
BeastieI would install lxde as a fall back15:19
vbgunzI read somewhere yesterday about some known issues with the beta, I believe something to do with xorg is one of them... damn, if I cannot reboot back into Jaunty I will have to play Left 4 Dead... I am not really feeling that right now :/15:19
Beastielxde is working15:19
BeastieI just installed it15:20
BluesKajwhat's the trick to getting flash working on firefox ?15:20
vbgunzBluesKaj: I remember having to install nspluginwrapper15:21
bsnideryou don't need nspluginwrapper anymore if you're on 64 bit15:21
Beastieunsupported pkgs15:21
BluesKaj32bit here15:21
kulightbsnider: for flash ?15:22
bsniderright. the flash 10 beta release from adobe is a much better option15:22
vbgunzim on 64 bit. It wouldn't work otherwise though my flash woes are about 2-3 months old now. not sure what changed but I remember downloading it to get it to work15:23
=== clearscreen1 is now known as clearscreen
vbgunzbsnider: yeah, I remember downloading that too although I think I removed it in favor of the repo version. it works for me konqueror/firefox15:24
kulightbsnider: beta ? its still alpha as far as i know. and there is no package for it ?15:24
bsniderdownload the plugin, put the libflashplugin.so file in /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins and it will work system-wide15:24
m_tadeuI have no sound on flash videos....does anyone know how to solve this?15:25
BluesKajnot working on ff so far15:25
bsnideri don't care if it isn't packaged. flash sites never crash or hang with it, you can run multiple flash movies at the same time etc. it's much better than nspluginwrapper15:25
vbgunzyeah that was my issue. the sound15:25
kulightbsnider: what about java ?15:25
bsniderit has nothing to do with java15:25
bsniderjava's something else15:25
kulightbsnider: i know what about jav a64 bit ?15:26
vbgunzhmm, turns out I did not have flashplugin-nonfree15:26
bsniderhaven't tried it yet15:26
bsniderno  need15:26
kulightbsnider: ok15:26
penguin42bsnider: I wouldn't say never crash; I still have problems with flash just deciding not to work and I have to quit and restart firefox15:27
penguin42java on 64bit in browsers is something I've never managed15:27
vbgunzthis is how I usually test my flash sound http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IpGp-22t0lU15:27
bsniderok, well i don't15:27
kulighti know sun released a 64 bit version but i dont know if canonical add it to the release15:28
ethana2so I'm trying to get GLSlideshow to behave exactly like the 'forest' screensaver on my mac15:29
=== albech_ is now known as albech
ethana2I want each image to pan once, for about six seconds, and I want to specify the directory15:29
tomsdalepenguin42: flash 64Bit sucks big time.15:29
ethana2I'm editing text files in /user/share/xscreensaver/ ...15:29
penguin42tomsdale: To be honest, it does seem to be more stable than 32bit+nspluginwrapper15:30
bsniderthat's an understatement15:30
BluesKajnot having much luck with nspluginwrapper15:31
bsniderbut maybe nspluginwrapper improved since i used it last15:31
tomsdalepenguin42: on my 8.10 I didn't need that anymore because adobe offers a 32bit version for linux now. But they don't seem offer the 64Bit Version yet.15:31
ethana2grr, what's this one image with the camera test pattern and that picture of flames coming out of a monitor?15:31
ethana2I just want it gone15:31
penguin42tomsdale: There is 64bit in jaunty15:31
tomsdaleso why does it still just freeze? it gives me a grey dead area.15:32
penguin42on 64bit when it's not happy it's more of a case of just getting no flash or a white area rather than the grey blob I tended to get with nspluginwrapper15:32
kulightpenguin42: there is not tou have to download and install it manualy15:32
vbgunzdamn I had these woes and wish I could help. all I know is I am not using flashplugin-nonfree at all. I downloaded the 64 bit version for myself direct from adobe. its a single file.so. I placed it in the right place (forgot where) and installed nspluginwrapper... this is as much as I can remember :(15:33

penguin42Blinkiz: OK, what you seeing?15:33
bsnidervbgunz, youshould have removed nspluginwrapper15:34
tomsdaledoes it work now stable on your system vbgunz?15:34
penguin42kulight: No, on jaunty it got the 64bit for me just by installing flashplugin-nonfree15:34
tomsdaleI did the same but since I'm still getting the grey rectangles I though it installed the ndiswrapper and the 32 bit version.15:35
kulightpenguin42: ill try that again... ill be happy if it does15:35
penguin42kulight: Uninstall nspluginwrapper and flashplugin-nofree and then reinstall flashplugin-nonfree15:35
penguin42I had to do the uninstall/reinstall on upgrade15:35
bsniderpenguin42, check the installed files list for me on flashplugin-nonfree15:36
kulightpenguin42: ive just done that and it asks me to install nsplug... as a dependency15:36
penguin42bsnider: Sure - which file?15:37
bsniderdoes it insall more than one?15:37
BluesKajbsnider, your suggestion 'put the libflashplugin.so file in /usr/lib/xulrunner-addons/plugins and it will work system-wide'  works well , thx for the tip15:37
penguin42more than one file?15:37
penguin42kulight: Hmm you are right it still has a dependency15:37
bsniderBluesKaj, no prob15:37
penguin42ok, you are right - according to about:plugins flash is still coming from npwrapper15:38
bsniderpenguin42, better suggestion: check about:plugins in forefox and tell me the flash version15:38
kulightbsnider: you can also put in .mozilla/plugins if you want it only for flash15:38
vbgunzbsnider, tomsdale. yes, I have nspluginwrapper on AMD 64 jaunty. I do not have flashplugin-nonfree. yes. stable on konqueror/firefox with sound no skips. perfect. my libflashplayer.so files are in 2 locations15:38

clancy2. in tuxguitar, sound and highlightening of played notes aren't at the same time, which is kind of weird for the guitar player16:35
penguin42ah a latency problem16:36
penguin42those are actually pretty hard to get right when you go through things like audio serers - although I suspect pulse has stuff for dealing with that16:37

weedarAnyone know why it still takes so long for ssh-connections to show a password prompt? I know it's fixable by turning off all the GSSAPI-parameters in ssh_config like before, but why is slow the default?16:37

Aegironhi everyone16:40
socketbindhi Aegiron16:40
weedaraurel42: Maybe it's not as slow as it was in Intrepid, but it still takes 10+ seconds, while it prompts almost instantly if GSSAPI is disabled16:40
AegironI have a question, purily out of curiosity, for which i can't seem to find an answer16:41
aurel42weedar: and it's not just that the server side is trying to resolve the client's name and runs into a timeout?16:41
Aegironwhen installing a version of ubuntu, it asks to create partitions to install it on, or it gives the option of automaticaly managing the drive16:42
aurel42weedar: my SSH connections ask for a password instantly, and I have not touched the SSH config since installing from the jaunty .iso16:43
clancyi linked my bugreport16:44
clancyi hope you take a look at it, it happens since Hardy16:44
AegironI noticed that when choosing the automated solution, it creates two partitions: one for the root, and one for the swap. But is there any particular reason why the swap partition is located in a seperate logical (extended) partition?16:44
Bonez56I just did a fresh installation of Jaunty, then a full apt-get upgrade from archive.ubuntu.com (main server) and I have no volume control panel in my notification area... can anyone help? i need to record some audio from my 'line in' jack on my sound card but at the moment i have no control over any of the volumes etc.16:44
weedaraurel42: Odd! I've only tried this from a jaunty VM running under XP, so I might have jumped to conclusions..Going to try and setup a jaunty VM in an Intrepid host now, I'll make sure to check if the problem persists16:44
penguin42clancy: I don't know if there are actually any devs here (I'm not one), I'd also look if timidity has it's own bug tracker and raise a bug asking for pulseaudio compatibility16:45

penguin42weedar: Well yeh that's what I was going to say - but if you already have a working 64bit guest....17:29
weedarpenguin42: yeah. Man, this weekend really hasn't gone my way when it comes to virtualbox..17:30
bsniderpeepsalot, ff 3.1 is already packaged17:34
Doctor_NickGOON FREET17:34
sparrwhat are the odds that a kernel module bug could be fixed in *JUST* the module?  that is, not requiring a reboot, just replacing and reloading the module.  pretty high, right?17:37
penguin42sparr: It's possible - depends on the bug of course17:38
penguin42what's the bug?17:38
jbroome_sorry for the bouncing, connected from the wrong host17:39
Buster3Hello! I have upgrades from intrepid 8.10 to Jaunty 9.4 and am having MAJOR problems is there any way to reverse this upgrade????17:42
bsniderno there isn't17:43
Buster3it errored just before is finished now I cant boot17:43
Buster3what do I do?17:43
penguin42Buster3: What's the last thing you see and what was the error?17:43
Buster3it said something about x.org17:44
Buster3no config files17:44
Buster3I'm confused17:44
bsnidernot enough info17:44
penguin42first important thing is to get the full error message17:44
Buster3I'm in recovery is there any way to start it again?17:45
penguin42reboot17:45
ryanpriorcry17:45
Buster3all I get when I reboot is a flashing curcor in the top left corner of my screen17:46
Buster3cursor*17:46
penguin42do you get anything before that?17:46
bsnidergrub?17:46
Buster3yeah but it goes my so fast17:46

Buster3ok I'll try that!17:47
Buster3thanks17:47
m_tadeuhas anyone tryed to connect those usb mic's from singstar?17:57
gavintlgoldI'd just like to say I'm very impressed with the beta17:57
gavintlgoldvery smooth and nice-looking. I think the nvidia drivers are much improved as well--my compiz experience is much smoother17:58
penguin42cool17:58
gavintlgoldand I love the notifications17:58
gavintlgoldonly problem i'm having is with the keyboard volume control17:58
BluesKajhmm, haven't checked compiz yet17:58
gavintlgoldit controls the wrong channel (not the master channel)17:58
vnwarriorguys .. I havent yet downloaded the ISO of jaunty - do you suggest I get beta or daily ? I heard there were some pretty serious bugs in Beta...17:59
penguin42vnwarrior: Well update-manager will keep you upto date as long as it installs OK17:59
kahbuntuvnwarrior: I'm using the beta17:59
rwwgavintlgold: Is the setting at the bottom of System > Preferences > Sound correct?17:59
kahbuntuand I'm very impressed18:00
kahbuntuit works better than debian testing + unstable18:00
gavintlgoldrww: hey, thanks! :)18:00
penguin42rww: Oh useful - mine was set ot Microphone18:00
gavintlgoldhmmm... it doesn't seem perfect18:01
rwwvnwarrior: I didn't run across any serious bugs in the beta. There was a problem with python after the beta freeze stopped, but that's fixed anyway.18:01
gavintlgoldI'm not quite all the way down and it says it's on mute18:01
gavintlgoldmaybe that's just a feature18:01
gavintlgoldwarning you that it's really quiet :P18:01
bsniderit's also a conservative release. they didn't revampt he sound system like fedora did, and they're using the older kernel18:01
rwwyeah, either that or volume control is being quirky again18:01
gavintlgoldi personally can't wait till koala18:02
rwwbsnider: The "newer" kernel only came out five days ago. Not really enough time for it to be tested properly.18:02
bsnideri'm just saying it's conservative18:03
bsnideri realize some things will be backported18:03
penguin42bsnider: It's not conservative!18:05
penguin42bsnider: Not with something that close to release18:05
bsniderthey integrated 2.6.27 into i8ntrepid with only a month of testing18:05
magciusHmm... trying to install python-nevow fails.18:06

magciuspenguin42, thanks.18:07
kahbuntubsnider: 2.6.27 is a long term support kernel18:07
thefuzzballI have this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/jaunty/+source/pulseaudio/+bug/33081418:07

Doctor_Nickin kubuntu jaunty, it's not giving me an option to install the proprietary nvidia driver18:08
bsnideroh it's one of those special lts kernels18:08
penguin42thefuzzball: Which kernl do you have?18:08
kahbuntubsnider: yes18:08

thefuzzballpenguin42, yes18:09
=== albech_ is now known as albech
penguin42thefuzzball: interesting, I haven't had that problem since upgrade to this kernel - I'm getting a weird POP every so often, but that seems different18:11
penguin42thefuzzball: I guess you could comment on that bug and see what happens?18:11
thefuzzballI will clean my cache and upgrade first, don't want any mistakes being made on my end...18:11
penguin42nod18:12

centaur5Is the only difference between an Ubuntu install and Netbook Remix install the ubuntu-desktop and the ubuntu-netbook-remix package?18:15
renderohello, since i upgraded to 9.04, i have no sound g.e. in games, but i can play some sound files, some files could not be played with totem.18:17
renderowhat could i test ?18:17
marctwxrandr only allows 800x600 for S-video, anyone know how to change it?18:20
tux_anyone know how to get the pidgin icon on the taskbar?18:27
tux_for docking purposes18:27
bruce89tux_: good luck18:28
Cycomdtchen: any word on those jacksense fixes?18:28
tux_bruce89, used to work in ibex18:28
bruce89tux_: in other words, you can't18:28
Cycomdtchen: or a 32bit kernel I can download to test?18:28
bruce89tux_: Ubuntu's braindead patch18:28
thiebaudetux_: create launcher for it18:28
tux_kdocker :/18:28
dtchenCycom: have you already tried one of my test ones?18:28
tux_i have to install so many kde frontends to use that18:29
Cycomdtchen: no, I dunno where they are.18:29
dtchenCycom: i think an older one is still available at http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~dtchen/18:29
bruce89tux_: AFAIK there's some preference in Piding18:29
Cycomdtchen: but the changes aren't complete yet, so they're not in the beta kernel, right?18:29
dtchenCycom: none of the jacksense fixes are in the beta or the new kernel18:29
tux_its under interface tab to select 'always show tray icon' but doesnt work18:29
Cycomdtchen: will they make it into the final release, do you think?18:30
bruce89tux_: Install Debian then18:30
gavintlgoldaww man, I love the fading backgrounds :D18:30
bruce89tux_: or go back to Intrepid18:30
dtchenCycom: i really don't know; they're not terribly high priority for me. i need to fix bluetooth.18:30
XenoPhoenixAre the header files the only documentation on libindicate?18:31
dtchenCycom: do you still have the bug report # that you filed?18:31
Cycomdtchen: not handy.18:31
bruce89XenoPhoenix: likely18:31
Cycomdtchen: my desktop system with snd-hda-intel doesn't show the problem either, so...18:31
dtchenCycom: different codec, probably.18:32
macojeez, you guys POUNCED on dtchen18:32
XenoPhoenixbruce89, do you know if there are any design guidelines like with with notify-osd lying around, I wouldn't know where to look18:32
macohe just sat down18:32
Cycommaco: meh. he coulda ignored us :)18:32
bruce89XenoPhoenix: I don't know, what are you doing?18:32
Cycomdtchen: if it's low priority for you, I'm not gonna re-upgrade my netbook to 9.04 just yet, I think.18:33
XenoPhoenixbruce89: thinking of making a Xchat indicator to compliment the libnotify for highlights18:33
bruce89XenoPhoenix: please don't18:33
bruce89actually, I use xchat-gnome, carry on18:33
Cycomdtchen: bluetooth is honestly higher priortiy for me too at this point :)18:34
XenoPhoenixbruce89: why the objection?18:34
bruce89it's pointless and requires a lot of Ubuntu-specific patchs18:34
tgpraveenanyone here using empathy with jaunty?18:34
bruce89yes18:34
XenoPhoenixbruce89:it was more for personal use than for general release anyway, besides surely implementation as a plugin would not require patches?18:35
bruce89XenoPhoenix: ah18:35
XenoPhoenixI would never attempt to integrate it directly!18:35
bruce89XenoPhoenix: I object to Ubuntu's patching programs to work with the crippled indicator applet and notify-ods18:35
Cycombruce89: it's a beta. the whole point is to test out new things for the new release.18:36
Cycombruce89: they can always revert to the old version if it becomes too problematic.18:36
XenoPhoenixbruce89: fair enough, which I why I was intending to implement it as plugin, that why if you use indicator applet, great, here's some xchat support, if not fine18:37
bruce89I doubt they'd ever come to their senses18:37
tgpraveenbruce89: that is not corret what ubuntu devs are doing is that they are making changes in code upstream in apps18:37
tgpraveento make them compliant with freedesktop specifications18:37
bruce89tgpraveen: they most certainly are not18:37
tgpraveenwhich the notify-osd requires to be followed so its18:37
XenoPhoenixtgpraveen, that was my understanding too I must admit18:38
tgpraveennot like they are not bullying everyone to folow their way of doing stuff18:38
bruce89I've not seen a single patch go upstream18:38
Cycomdtchen: once bluetooth is fixed, and you'll have more time for working on the jacksense, let me know and I'll upgrade a netbook for testing.18:39
bruce89I meant things like gnome-mount using dialogues now18:39
XenoPhoenixyeah I thought it was a tighter implementation of freedesktop specs, hence they were patching upstream to support better compliance18:39
tgpraveenalso ba ck to my original question to those who are using empathy how is the new notification support and sound alerts for new msg and calls etc?18:39
dtchenCycom: free time doesn't grow on trees for me18:39
tgpraveenwhen a new call is received what  happens18:39
tgpraveenbruce89: hmmm.... didnt think of that. gud point18:40
Cycomdtchen: I imagine not :) It's not a big deal.  My problem with totem is also preventing me from going all 9.04 at this point anyhow.18:40
bruce89there is no dialogue thingy in the notification specification18:40
XenoPhoenixyeah your correct on that point18:41
tgpraveenempathy users ^^18:41
bsniderdtchen, does fruit grow on trees for you?18:42
bruce89tgpraveen: I'm afraid I don't get calls18:42
crdlbin some respects, the patches are ensuring tighter compliance (the spec accepts that some daemons will not support actions)18:42
tgpraveendont get.? and sond alerts?18:42
tgpraveensound18:42
DanaGdtchen: what's this about jack sensing?18:43
tgpraveenbruce89: ^^18:43
bruce89crdlb: indeed, but the not-support of actions is questionable18:43
bruce89no actions == patching to use dialogues18:43
crdlbthe spec doesn't appear to mention ignoring the expiration timeout though :)18:43
DanaGugh, every time I start my computer, I have to mute and then unmute PA.18:44
s3r3n1t7Pidgin broke? Seems to love to crash.18:44
tgpraveenbruce89: u tried video chat on empathy 2.26?18:45
bruce89tgpraveen: nope18:45
tgpraveenbruce89: and sound alerts?18:47
bruce89tgpraveen: with a decent sound theme, yes18:47
tgpraveenthe default one 9.04?18:48
DanaGsnd_hda_codec: Unknown symbol snd_ctl_add_slave18:48
DanaGargh.18:48
hmwwhats wrong with the fonts? when i tried to find some, many just looked the same. My impression is, that some fonts just dont work and the previously selected one is still being used in that selection dialog (change desktop background/fonts)18:48
bruce89tgpraveen: nope, freedesktop-sound-theme18:48
tgpraveenbruce89: is there a bug report for this?18:49
bruce89tgpraveen: not to the best of my recollection18:49
tgpraveensad18:50
tgpraveenbruce89: offtopic were u born in 1989?18:50
dtchenDanaG: is the "muted on login" issue reproducible in a new user?18:51
bsniderpulseaudio 9.15 must be getting close to release18:51
dtchenbsnider: soon, yes. it will release prior to Fedora 11.18:51
bsniderluke has test packages already in his ppa18:51
penguin42is it getting any more stable is the question? I don't know if the POP sounds I'm getting in Jaunty beta are kernel or pulse18:51
dtchenyes, luke and i discussed offering them in his ppa due to 9.04 not shipping 0.9.1518:52
bsniderhe's also offering alsa 1.0.1918:52
dtchenbsnider: alsa-lib 1.0.19, rather.18:53
penguin42dtchen: I've not seen any sign of most of the pulse problems I had on the Alpha though which is good18:53
DanaGdtchen: hmm, I'm not sure of that18:54
DanaGOh yeah, what was that about jack sensing?18:54
dtchenjack sensing is broken for internal {,d}mics and for a revision of sigmatel used in HP Minis18:54
Cycomdtchen: it appears to also be a little messed up on the dell mini9 for headphones18:55
dtcheni can't troubleshoot hardware i don't have access to18:55
Cycomdtchen: mini9 is available at best buy too! :)18:55
* penguin42 grrs at a CD with all the data as Various Artists18:56
dtcheneh, i've already purchased two macbook pros just to fix audio on ubuntu; i don't think i really want to waste any more money18:56
CycomO_O18:56
Cycomyou WHAT?!18:56
CycomFrankly, I'm suprised dell isn't giving you guys machines for testing.  They sell mini9s with ubuntu 8.04 on em18:57
bsniderthe crackbook pro is an expensive piece o' crap18:57
DanaGah.18:57
Cycombsnider: the hardware is nice, I'm just not a fan of OS X :)18:57
dtchenDell does have some sort of access program *for Canonical employees*18:57
Cycomdtchen: but as a volunteer you're out of the loop, right?18:57
dtchenof course.18:57
DanaGdtchen: wish they had a "rental" program.18:57
Cycomdtchen: that blows.18:58
DanaGeBay the Macs?18:58
BUGabundohello everyone18:58
dtchennah, some local middle/high schools have them now18:58
penguin42dtchen: How does it work with the audio chips - is it they are wired different on every motherboard? How is it the software supposed to figure it out?18:58
Cycomdtchen: you get a tax deduction for that?18:59
dtchenCycom: no, i cannot claim them for such a purpose18:59
Cycomdtchen: I'm suprised.  Did you sell them, or donate them?18:59
DanaGI'd sell them at like half-price, or something.18:59
DanaGOr even 1/3 price.18:59
DanaGThat way they get a discount, and you don't get a total loss.19:00
DanaGI believe Apple does weird things like putting line-out on the pin that defaults to line-in.19:00
dtchenpenguin42: HDA, as a spec, is horridly vague. MS has a closed discovery algorithm. No one else in the community has anything close, though there are attempts to RE. So, we brute-force - well, we add static quirk mappings. Which blows.19:00
dtchenpenguin42: but yes, nearly everything is done in software.19:00
dtchenCycom: donated.19:01
Cycomdtchen: and you can't claim them?!19:01
Cycomdtchen: what a rip off!19:01
penguin42dtchen: Sigh - you'd think there would be a chunk in the firmware or a register that they could set - not that any of the bios vendors would get it right19:01
dtcheneh, it goes with the area. can't reasonably do that without drawing undue attention.19:01
penguin42dtchen: Well thank you for your efforts anyway19:02
DanaGActually, if I don'19:02
DanaGIf I don't use the ADI drivers for my sound card in Vista, it does some weird things too:19:02
DanaGthe same "mute doesn't work" issue... and it also shows headphone-out as a separate output that disappears if you have nothing plugged in.19:03
Cycombtw, dtchen, the reason I'm running Ubuntu on my desktop (primarily used for gaming!) is that even windows vista couldn't find the drivers for my sound card.  snd-hda-intel crackles unless I do the mac unload/reload module trick, but otherwise it works FAR better than windows.19:03
dtchenargh @gconf for distribution upgrades19:03
DanaGMy audio chip also does odd things with a gpio: there's a "hardware mute" hotkey tied to GPIO1, and if I twiddle it, it triggers the hardware mute.19:04
Cycommy mic jack has better support on linux than windows.19:04
dtchenCycom: is the crackling still reproducible with the latest kernel in jaunty?19:04
Cycomdtchen: yup.19:04
Cycomdtchen: it mostly comes from the left channel, as far as I can tell.19:04
dtchenCycom: hmm, i thought you weren't running an installed jaunty on that machine19:04
Cycomdtchen: that's on the netbooks.  I'm using 8.10 on them now.19:05
Cycomdtchen: my desktop has 9.04 beta.19:05
Cycomwell, actually, when was the last kernel update? today?19:05
Cycomlet me pull out the modifications and see if crackling goes away.19:06
screamIS there a channel or email list that I can become aware of updates added to the repository?19:06
bruce89jaunty-changes19:07
DanaGToo bad there's no array-mic algorithm for Linux.19:07
CycomDanaG: array-mic?19:07
DanaGWhen using my array mic in Linux, it gets a lot of noise; the Windows drivers have a noise-cancelling feature and a directional-beam feature.19:07
screamSince they have disabled the update notification icon...19:07
scream...19:07
Cycomscream: you can turn it back on :)19:07
DanaGyeah... because apparently the notification area... is not for.... update.... notifications.  HAH!19:08
bruce89gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch false19:08
bruce89apparently autolaunching is better for some reason19:08
Cycomman, I really was worried that it was just gone.  Like the classic start menu in windows 7 is gone.19:08
dtchenCycom: yesterday sometime. i think. my sense of time has blurred heavily since the last work spin cycle and since prior to Beta.19:08
m_tadeuI can't get any sound from my micrphone....what can I do about it?19:08
dtchen(ugh.)19:09
dtchenm_tadeu: which mic?19:09
Cycomdtchen: could be worse, you could be out of a job.19:09
CycomI wonder how canonical pays?19:09
bruce89by cheque19:09
m_tadeudtchen: wireless mics from  the ps219:09
dtchenCycom: at some point, there is little difference between being overworked and being unemployed19:09
Cycomdtchen: well, there is the critical difference: money.19:10
dtchenCycom: money makes little difference when your health suffers to such an extent19:10
Cycomdtchen: it appears the crackling is still there.19:13
bsnideris google down?19:13
penguin42bsnider: Not from here19:13
OiPenguin_Vertical scroll on touchpad not working in 9.04 beta. Is there anything I can do before reporting a bug? (Yes, enable vertical scrolling is ticked in System --> Preferences --> Mouse)19:14
penguin42OiPenguin_: Seems to be OK here19:14
thefuzzballbsnider, nope19:14
bruce89OiPenguin_: they disabled it for some reason19:15
OiPenguin_penguin42: My machine is a compal HEL80. I had no problems in 8.10 and previous versions.19:15
bsnideroh, my isp must have had a minor issue19:15
Cycomdtchen: this is without any options on snd-hda-intel that the error shows up.  even with model=5stack  and position_fix 1 or 2, I get crackling.19:15
OiPenguin_bruce89: Does that mean that I can expect it to work in final and hence no need to report a bug?19:15
penguin42OiPenguin_: Mine is Toshiba Equium A100-306 - report it; you might try if you can set anything with synclient19:15
_VIM_2did they change something in 9.04's .bashrc file? I cant seem to get color text in terminal like i had in 8.1019:15
bruce89OiPenguin_: you can expect it to not work19:16
OiPenguin_penguin42: I should probably report the name/model of my touchpad. How do I find that?19:16
OiPenguin_bruce89: That would be a very unfortunate regression.19:16
penguin42OiPenguin_: Not sure19:16
bruce89hasn't stopped them so far19:16
yofel_VIM_2: works fine here19:17
penguin42OiPenguin_: I'd include your /var/log/Xorg.0.log - there seems to be a fair amount of debug in there about it19:17
Cycomdtchen: I also need model=5stack to get my mic detected, but I suspect that's because my motherboard is rather obscure19:20
OiPenguin_penguin42: Bug reported, with log attached19:22

ubottuUbuntu bug 350510 in ubuntu "No vertical scroll on touchpad. Compal HEL80" [Undecided,New]19:22
bsniderCycom, mayhaps you should file a bug19:23
Cycombsnider: I'm not sure if I should.  Other motherboards of this series are documented in the kernel as requiring it.19:23
m_tadeumy ps2 wireless microphone shows up in kmix, volume is at 100% and capture is checked....but there is no sound....can anyone help me debugging this?19:24
bsniderthey don't have to do anything about it. i mean goons aren't going to show up at your door if you file abug. it can't hurt19:24
fargiolasis there a reason why ubuntu netbook remix image is not compiled for lpia processors? doesn't it aim to netbook targets?19:24
dtchenCycom: you're firing a lot of information at me without providing the bug report #s ;)19:25
screamCycom, How do I reenable it?19:25
dtchenCycom: most importantly, all that quirk info is meaninglessly devoid of context. at the very least, it needs to be linked with /proc/asound/card*/codec* content19:26
screamThe update notifier that is19:26
bruce89gconftool-2 -s -t bool /apps/update-notifier/auto_launch false19:26
screambruce89, with or without sudo?19:26
bruce89without obviously19:26
screamIt was not that obvious for me.  I feel stupid when you say that. :)19:27
bruce89sorry19:27
screamI'm relatively new to ubuntu, but I'm learning alot when I do bug management.  I'm getting there.  Tis ok. :)19:27
bruce89general idea is to not bother with sudo unless a command fails19:27
screamI'll remember that.19:27
bruce89assuming it's a permission issues19:28
Cycomdtchen: well, the crackling fix came from https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HdaIntelSoundHowto19:28
Cycomdtchen: I just happened to try the Solution for Apple Macs.19:28
dtchenCycom: which "fix"?19:28
screamOk, the command is issued.  One more question if y'all don't mind.  The auto updates will offer me to check daily, every two days, and so on.  If I want it to check say, every hour, how do I go about that?19:28
Cycomdtchen: the "Solution for Apple Macs" one, editing /etc/rc.local to contain "rmmod snd_hda_intel" and modprobe "snd_hda_intel"19:29
Cycomsorry "modprobe snd_hda_intel"19:29
dtchenCycom: ew. obviously suboptimal and not a fix. :/19:29
Cycomdtchen: yeah. but it WORKS :)19:30
dtchenCycom: so you're experiencing a combination of issues: pointer desync and codec init failure19:30
dtchenCycom: nah, it's a pretty ugly workaround, it doesn't actually "work"19:30

DanaGYeah, non-packaged ones tend to break stuff.21:09
dan457Besides kinda ruins testing the one that comes with jaunty21:09

ShinyLegoHello!21:22
penguin42hi21:22
ShinyLegoI having problems logging in after installing Kubuntu 9.04 beta.  The Login screen comes up and I type everything in and then it goes black for a few seconds then goes straight back to the login screen.  So, whats qrong with it?21:22
uffobluefoxicy: i want offline deb like i had on 8.10 so it is possible but where i can get correct deb21:22
penguin42ShinyLego: Sounds like a graphics driver problem or the like? What's your graphic card?21:23
ShinyLegoUm21:23
weedargavintlgold: Sounds like a plan, the money it costs will be worth the grief you'll avoid :-)21:23
penguin42ok, can you login to it somehow?21:23
ShinyLegowell, I dont think thats it because it just goes back to the log in screen again21:23
ShinyLegoI dont know how I could21:24
penguin42ShinyLego: Well OK, you could try seeing if Gnome or one of the other desktops help - you could check in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old to see if there are any X crash messages21:24
ShinyLegoI've tried booting  it up in kde, gnome and regular kwin or whatever21:25
ShinyLegoSo, theres no other way I can log into it?21:26
penguin42well, try hitting ctrl-alt-f1 and see if you get a textual console21:26
ShinyLegook21:27
uffocan someone give me correct samba.deb pack that enables that folder sharing in jaunty beta.21:27
ShinyLegook, i did that, now what?21:29
penguin42ShinyLego: Have you managed to log in there?21:29
LordKenTheGreatHello.21:29
LordKenTheGreatI have a problem with the Jaunty Firefox/Xulrunner package.21:29
ShinyLegook, i lodgged in in the text mode, but how do I log into my actual desktop from there?21:31
penguin42ShinyLego: Ah well, the challenge is to find out why your regular desktop breaks - can you copy your /var/log/Xorg0.log.old to somewhere we can all see it?21:32
LordKenTheGreatI have filed a bug report here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xulrunner-1.9/+bug/350584 .21:32
ubottuError: This bug is private21:32
ShinyLegoI dont know what that is or how to do that, I am a noob21:33
penguin42ShinyLego: OK, so probably best not to try Beta's unless you know how to recover from these types of things!21:33
ShinyLego=C21:33
penguin42ShinyLego: Can you type lspci|grep -i vga   and tell me what it says21:33
danbeckSo, I21:35
danbeckSo, I'm up to date as far as 1 hour ago with 9.04.  The sound still doesn't work on my Dell Mini 9 with the netbook remix.  Is there any info about this issue I can read?21:36
penguin42danbeck: I don't know - have you checked launchpad?21:37
LordKenTheGreatDoes anyone know why Firefox is broken out of the box?21:37
penguin42LordKenTheGreat: Define broken?21:37
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: I don't think it is21:37
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: it's been working fine for me21:37
LordKenTheGreatIt fails to start.21:37
penguin42doesn't here - what error do you get?21:37
LordKenTheGreatI even tried to update.21:38
LordKenTheGreathttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xulrunner-1.9/+bug/35058421:38
ubottuUbuntu bug 350584 in xulrunner-1.9 "xulrunner-bin crashed with signal 7 while upgading in jaunty" [Undecided,New]21:38
LordKenTheGreatHere.21:38
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: i have seen that behavior on windows when there was one running in the background that failed to shut down properly21:38
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: are you sure there isn't one already running?21:38
LordKenTheGreatI'm sure.21:38
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: if you do "ps -ef | grep firefox" do you see a process ?21:38
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: also , what happens if you launch it form a terminal ?21:39
LordKenTheGreatikonia: Just the ps process.21:39
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: ok, so there isn't a process running, how about from the command prompt ?21:39
ikonia(from a shell)21:39
LordKenTheGreatAnd I get no output from the terminal.21:39
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: how about if you remove ~/.mozilla21:40
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: sometimes corrupted configs can cause a process to abort on startup21:40
LordKenTheGreatNo dice.21:40
penguin42hmm thats very odd21:40
LordKenTheGreatI tried updating the package, and there's a problem with xulrunner.21:40
penguin42problem? What does the problem say21:41
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: no output at all ? foes it return back to a command prompt ot not give the prompt back ?21:41
LordKenTheGreatIt returns to the prompt.21:41
ikoniaLordKenTheGreat: with no other output ?21:42
LordKenTheGreatNo other output.21:42
ikoniamost odd21:42
penguin42LordKenTheGreat: I'd uninstall all xulrunner, mozilla, firefox etc packages and reinstall them21:42
* LordKenTheGreat will attach output from apt.21:42
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: did you try removing (or renaming)  ~/.mozilla?21:43
LordKenTheGreatmister_roboto: Yes.21:43
LordKenTheGreatIf I remove xulrunner, I remove a whole lot of other stuff...21:43
LordKenTheGreatHow do I just remove that package?21:44
LordKenTheGreatAnd I tried running xulrunner standalone.21:44
LordKenTheGreatBus error (core dumped)21:45
ikoniawhoaaaa21:45
ikoniasounds like there is more going on on your box21:45
LordKenTheGreatWhat do you mean?21:45
LordKenTheGreatIt's a fresh install.21:45
ikoniaso ?21:45
ikoniaif your getting coredumps that doesn't sound like a nice setup21:46
* irunongames is away: Gone away for now21:46
ikonia!away > irunongames21:46
ubottuirunongames, please see my private message21:46
* LordKenTheGreat is getting fustrated.21:48
LordKenTheGreatCan I just remove xulrunner and reinstall without wiping out the  other packages?21:48
crdlba bus error is just a lower level segfault basically21:48
mister_robotocrdlb: not really... can be just a data alignment issue21:48
danbeckk, no bugs have been reported.21:49
crdlbsure21:49
danbeckWas working in 8.04 and quite a few sound kernel modules are loaded.21:49
crdlbbut it's lower level in the sense that the kernel doesn't catch it21:49
mister_robotocatch?21:50
danbecklol, this is sad.  If this were a server install, I could fix anything.  I know zilch about getting a desktop running.21:50
dupondjeCan I get ident running in WINE ?21:50
mister_robotocrldlb: the kernel passes the signal to the process like any other signal. what do you mean catch it? do you consider SIGUSR1 a higher level segfault or something?21:51
mister_robotocrdlb: just curious what you meant21:52
penguin42crdlb: There's very little difference between bus error and segfault; in both cases the kernel may fix them up for some things21:52
crdlb:/ I just meant it's a bug in the program that was caught in a different place21:52
LordKenTheGreatNote: A vanilla Firefox tarball from Mozilla runs perfectly.21:53
mister_robotoLordKenTheGreat: what kinda cpu are you on?21:53
LordKenTheGreatP4.21:53
penguin42LordKenTheGreat: One of your package installs must be borked21:53
danbeckok, so no bugs abound sound not working for the netbook remix.  Can anyone help me figure out how to trouble shoot this?   What can I check to see what may be going on?21:53
* LordKenTheGreat is reinstalling xulrunner.21:53
LordKenTheGreatdanbeck: alsamixer?21:54
LordKenTheGreatCheck if that works.21:54
penguin42danbeck: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting?action=show&redirect=DebuggingSoundProblems21:55
danbeckthanks, I'll read that21:55
LordKenTheGreatAnd firefox is alive!21:57
danbeckThat document was very helpul and the problem is fixed.21:58
danbeckThanks a lot penguin4221:58
penguin42no problem - what was it in the end?21:58
LordKenTheGreatThank you for helping me fix the xulrunner problem!21:58
penguin42LordKenTheGreat: What was it?21:58
LordKenTheGreatI have firefox up and running now.21:58
LordKenTheGreatReinstall xulrunner.21:59
danbeckMaster volume was fine and set correctly, but the external speaker problem was all the way down.  I wonder if it's a bug with the initial settings.  Beyond the keyboard volume control, I haven't set anything.21:59
danbeckIn the end, it looks like a pebkac problem, but it was the default after the installed21:59
penguin42danbeck: Nod21:59
danbeckwhich, ain't right....21:59
LordKenTheGreatThis is why I like testing betas.22:00
LordKenTheGreatIt's a learning experience.22:00
danbeckgonna submit a usability bug just in case22:01
* LordKenTheGreat installs Enigform and FireGPG now.22:02
LordKenTheGreatAnd the problem resurfaces.22:03
LordKenTheGreat"Couldn't load XPCOM"22:04
penguin42what did you do to get rid of it before?22:04
LordKenTheGreatAnd I think I know why...22:04
LordKenTheGreatA stinking piece of proprietary software.22:05
LordKenTheGreatAKA, the package for my eToken.22:05
LordKenTheGreatLibNSS glitches.22:05
LordKenTheGreatI guess is .so hell for me.22:06
penguin42you have a thing for getting to signed websites or something?22:07
LordKenTheGreatI use an eToken.22:08
penguin42eToken?22:08
LordKenTheGreatAnd the debian package breaks xulrunner with an nss conflict.22:08
LordKenTheGreatIt's a hardware encryption device.22:08
penguin42ah22:08
LordKenTheGreatUSB smartcard.22:08
LordKenTheGreatThe disadvantages of proprietary software.22:09
penguin42nod22:09
LordKenTheGreatThe deb has its own versions of nss.22:10
* LordKenTheGreat has to give up his eToken support in order to get Firefox working.22:10
kristian_i was just wondering if anyone has tested jaunty on a laptop, and burnt a data dvd with brasero/k3b and if verification is successful. :-)22:10
penguin42kristian_: It would be unusual for laptops in general to be a problem for something like that - one in particular or all burning to be broken22:11
kristian_penguin42 : the problem is that brasero/k3b try to eject tray to clear cache, while laptops have a non motorized tray, both programs can not call back tray.22:12
penguin42haha that's funny22:13
kristian_did i say something stupid? :-)22:13
penguin42no, I take my comment about 'unusual for laptops' back22:13
kristian_i see that jaunty will come with a much more updated version of brasero and i had a talk with the author and he said the issues should be better now, 8.10 can only get 0.8.2 brasero via repo.22:15
kristian_so if anyone has tested and it works. then yay! :-P22:16
screamWhat is the best desktop application that looks good, and reveals much information about cpu, bandwidth, thruput, diskspace, et cetera?22:17
HalowConky?22:17
crdlbconky meets all requirements except for the first :)22:17
penguin42kristian_: Well, I can try it if you want - I've got a spare DVD+RW22:17
HalowConky can look really good! ;)22:18
screamSo just, apt-get conky and I'll have a full configured (or mostly configured) desktop application that will do all this?22:18
kristian_penguin42 : only if you have time/can be bothered. no stress. :-)22:18
penguin42kristian_: So the test is burn a cd with brasero?22:18
Halowscream: It's scriptable. You can look around the forums. There's at least one massive "post your conky script and screenshot" thread.22:18
screamk22:19
kristian_penguin42 : basically yes, burning a cd/dvd with brasero and see if brasero is able to clear cache without ejecting tray, or giving an option for user to insert tray manually and then clicking "continue" to verify. or something along those lines.22:19
penguin42kristian_: OK, are there any options I need to check before I tell it to burn?22:20
kristian_penguin42 : there is an option after you have added files to burn and click "burn" you can check out "properties" and deselect "eject tray". since i hopefully brasero should be able to clear cache and manage to verify without ejecting tray. at least that is what i hope.22:22
vistakillergeia22:24
penguin42kristian_: OK so you want me to deselect eject-after-burning and hope it should all just work ?22:25
josh-lhey anyone know how to get rid of the damnable bean on the top right corner of the desktop that just reapeared in jaunty?22:25
vistakillerops sorry wrong chat22:25
josh-lkde22:25
penguin42kristian_: Well, it says success22:27
kristian_penguin42 : good! :-) thanks!22:30
penguin42kristian_: Although I had a different problem - it didn't really want to eject22:31
kristian_penguin42 : well, didnt you deselect eject tray?22:31
penguin42yeh, but I mean after I finished22:31
penguin42I did an erase and then tried to eject and it wouldn't eject22:32
kristian_penguin42 : ah! hmmm, that setting only effects that it shouldnt eject inbetween burning/verification. after both are done, you can just manually open tray?22:33
kristian_:-)22:33
penguin42it didn't want to22:33
penguin42it eventually did after much prodding - I thought I'd have to attack it with a paperclip22:33
kristian_:-P22:33
kristian_oh!22:33
excois there a bug in network manager, that the manual settings don't get applied?22:33
kristian_maybe it was still verifying?22:34
penguin42no, don't think so - it had finished, said it was ok, then I got on did an erase, it seemed happy with that22:34
kristian_hmmm.22:37
kristian_at least it manages to verify properly now.22:37
penguin42nod22:37
Ienorandexco: something like bug 28437722:37
ubottuLaunchpad bug 284377 in linux "No NET with 2.6.27: No buffer space available" [Medium,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/28437722:37
kristian_one step further in the right direction, once jaunty becomes widespread im sure some smaller bugs will come, but its better than before. :-) thanks for testing.22:38

TheFuzzballHow do I log in to my Ubuntu box from Windows when my Ubuntu does not use SSH/Telnet?22:46
RAOFTheFuzzball: VNC?22:48
RAOFBut you'll need to set it up, obviously.22:48
XenoPhoenixTheFuzzball, With difficult, VNC would be your best bet or but a sshd or telnetd on the Ubuntu box.22:48
XenoPhoenixput*22:48
XenoPhoenixas RAOF says though you'll need to setup VNC too.22:48
TheFuzzballI don't have access to the box :(22:49
TheFuzzballSo I can't install anything on it :D22:49
XenoPhoenixThen you might be in trouble, someone else might have ideas but I think you might be stuck there :)22:49

httpdsshi! ...i upgraded a time ago from intrepid to jaunty and very pleased about it. i need some feedback on the bootchart im getting cuz i feel i'm getting lots of processes on the boot process that dont have to be there. here is the image taken from bootchart http://img3.imagebanana.com/view/ck917alb/ktopjaunty200903286.png ... any suggestions to reduce boot time23:06

httpdssoh and by the way, can anyone explain me why i get a process called "collector" after the "init" process, and most of the charts i see have busybox :S is that a migration problem ?23:10
rwwhttpdss: I have both of those processes on a fresh Beta install =/23:11
rwwdunno what collector is, but busybox is the shell used during init, I think23:12
penguin42nacho: There you go, comment and backtrace added23:12
httpdssrww, can you upload your bootchart so i can compare it with a fresh install ??23:12
rwwhttpdss: oh, collector is a bootchart process23:12
nachogreat, thanks penguin4223:12
* httpdss is wondering why busybox doesnt show up23:15
rwwhttpdss: http://imagebin.org/43501 is the first one I have. I think the only thing I'd done at that point is install boinc-client, so apart from that, it should be vanilla.23:15
httpdssrww, great thx !23:15
rwwoh, wait, I don't have busybox on there. I was thinking of another bootchart.23:16
rwwI guess fresh Beta doesn't have busybox. collector is there, though, obviously.23:16
httpdssrww, 16 seconds !!! i'm way away from that :S23:16
