zekAtreidesok00:00
zekAtreidesif i cant get the system running then i will use that as a resort00:01
zekAtreidesbut im used to ubuntu00:01
zekAtreidesand am used to that00:01
CloseYetFarwhats the problem?00:02
zekAtreidesthe mouse doesnt even move within 10 seconds00:02
CloseYetFaropen a terminal and run the top command00:03
CloseYetFartop is like taks manager00:04
zekAtreidesok00:04
UKGentI just got told off for being 'off topic' , was about to argue and then realised I was in ubuntu and not xubuntu   lol00:04
CloseYetFartask^00:04
zekAtreidesshould i use ctrl alt f2?00:04
zekAtreidesUKGent u were told off for trolling if i remember correctly00:04
zekAtreidesbut i might be wrong00:04
UKGentzek even funnier because it really was not intentional00:04
UKGentyes you are right00:05
zekAtreidesCloseYetFar: should i use ctrl alt F2? or F1 or something?00:05
CloseYetFarfor what ?00:06
zekAtreidesopening a terminal00:06
CloseYetFarrun the gui, even if it takes a while00:06
CloseYetFaryou can00:06
zekAtreidesok00:06
CloseYetFarI would just open a term in the gui00:06
CloseYetFarand watch top as I do stuff00:06
zekAtreidesis there a shortcut to open the terminal by default or to run an app?00:07
UKGentmy tail is firmly between my legs...   I have been having trouble with my xfce Desktop - Panels kept disappearing but I seem to have sorted it out now.00:07
CloseYetFari think if you right click on the desktop there is a short cut there00:08
zekAtreidesok00:08
zekAtreidesill try that once it loads00:08
zekAtreidesit is taking a while to switch from F2 to F700:08
CloseYetFaror click the mouse on the tool bar00:08
CloseYetFaryour laptop is 700 mhz?00:08
zekAtreidesyeah00:09
zekAtreidesibm thinkpad a20m00:09
CloseYetFarthat should be fine00:09
zekAtreides128mb ram00:09
CloseYetFarhmm thats kind of low00:09
zekAtreidesi know00:09
CloseYetFarit may be constantly swaping00:09
zekAtreideswould i be better off with debian?00:09
zekAtreidesi might just go ahead and install that00:10
CloseYetFaris the hard drive light on constantly00:10
zekAtreidespretty much00:10
zekAtreidesi used to have an older version of xubuntu running and that worked out ok00:10
zekAtreidesactually let me check and make sure both ram sticks are in ok00:10
CloseYetFaryou can use the free command00:11
zekAtreidescause i took them out and put them back in and i thought i had 256 but i wasnt sure00:11
CloseYetFari would at least figure out the exact problem be fore you start doing reinstalls00:14
zekAtreidesyeah00:17
zekAtreidespeople in another forum thought that 128 might be a little weak for xubuntu00:17
CloseYetFarOnce installed, Xubuntu can run with 192 MB RAM, but 256 MB RAM is strongly recommended00:18
zekAtreidesyeah00:18
CloseYetFargot that from wikipedia00:18
zekAtreidesthanks for ur help]00:18
CloseYetFarnp00:19
zekAtreidesi think its just too weak00:19
zekAtreidesso im going to try pure debian00:19
CloseYetFarcan you get more ram for it00:19
zekAtreidesfrom a net install00:19
CloseYetFaryea00:19
zekAtreidesi might be able too but its just for programming a robot for a college class project00:19
zekAtreidesbasically its usefull because it has a RS232 serial port00:19
CloseYetFarohh00:20
UKGentTo solve my problems with disappearing panels, I started up a Terminal and typed in xfce4-panel. The panels then duly appeared but if you close the terminal window they disappear again. I have sorted our the panel problem now but I am curious. When you type that in, does it activate a procedure that just keeps running or what?00:20
CloseYetFarin that case install debian with no gui00:20
zekAtreidesi might actually do that00:20
CloseYetFarthen do apt-get install fluxbox00:20
zekAtreidesim not sure yet00:20
zekAtreidesbecause i am not a pro with cmd line00:20
CloseYetFarfluxbox is faster then xfce400:20
zekAtreidesbut yeah00:21
zekAtreidesill try fluxbox00:21
CloseYetFarbut fluxbox is a very minimal gui00:21
CloseYetFarcheck google images to see what it looks like00:21
zekAtreidesok00:21
zekAtreidesis it the dsl gui?00:21
CloseYetFari think dsl uses fluxbox but theres is set up differently00:22
zekAtreidesok00:22
zekAtreideshave u ever heard of lxde?00:22
CloseYetFarnope lol00:22
zekAtreideshm its an option for my debian install00:22
CloseYetFarthats cool, but fluxbox will still be faster00:23
zekAtreidesyeah00:24
zekAtreidesill have to install that after00:24
zekAtreidesthe graphical user install interface is flying though00:24
zekAtreidesme gusta00:24
zekAtreideswhy thats installing i did have another question00:25

lg11My screen saver never starts under xubuntu evern though i told it to03:19
SML1226If you use a VM what client do you use?03:28
BigMoopiesit appears that Thunar doesn't come with a network browser by default ?03:31
SML1226no thunar doesn't and most i tried didn't only konqueror did03:32
BigMoopiesSo I need to install a special non-XFCE program to view my home network ?03:32
BigMoopiesgesh03:32
BigMoopieswhat does GNOME use ?03:33
BigMoopiesI still have ubuntu desktop installed03:33
SML1226I'm not sure about that and gnome uses nautilus03:34
BigMoopiesnautulius or something ?03:34
SML1226yep exactly03:34
BigMoopiesyeah, that works03:34
BigMoopiescrazy03:34
SML1226kde uses konqueror or dolphin and I personally like dolphin better but konq has web browser and network management built in03:35
BigMoopiesI can't stand KDE03:36
BigMoopiesor full blow03:36
SML1226do you or anybody you know use a VM in linux?03:36
BigMoopiesblown03:36
BigMoopiesVirtualbox03:36
SML1226i don't like how kde runs but kde4 is beautiful03:36
SML1226i like how gnome and xfce work much better03:37
BigMoopiesGNOME didn't run all that much better, specially for running FireFox03:37
BigMoopiesIt seems that FireFox can browse the network03:38
SML1226thanks for the vm info. I used MS's virtual thing inside windows but that only supports windows so no linux in that :(03:38
BigMoopiesif I don't wanna use nautilius03:38
SML1226I never really used gnome for extended periods of time just as rescue. I used xfce all the time though03:39
BigMoopiesyes, I'm thinking about removing the ubuntu desktop03:40
BigMoopiesbrb03:40
SML1226well konq won't work in gnome. I guess you could enable kde services in xfce and install konq then03:40
lg11how can I add a program to run on start up?03:55
SML1226anybody try windows 7 in a vm? I don't really wanna install a beta from MS03:57
lg11it works just not very well03:57
lg11it only runs well in ms vm03:57
SML1226dang. I can't do that the way I want then. I guess I can run an XP/Xubu dual-boot with 7 in a vm on XP03:59
lg11You can try it will boot04:00
lg11it just wont be happy04:00
SML1226anybody use a pc to run osx86? In a VM or for real?04:00
SML1226I can't afford a mac so I wanna do this a little. I guess I might have to try it. I don't wanna buy the laptop and have it not work though.04:02
lg11I havent done it but there are instrcutions available04:02
lg11hackintosh04:02
SML1226yeah I am looking at a guys compaq and it isn't listed in any compatability list but there isn't much in the lists04:04
SML1226this is true OSX 10.5 but it is on a pc. Apple gave out the files to do it themselves.04:07
lg11shouldnt be much on this list04:13
lg11Mac only write driver for hardware they plan to use04:13
lg11Dont suppose you know how to make xubuntu login to my wifi automagically upon boot04:14
SML1226yeah but there are actually a lot of things on there. There are only a couple of compaqs there04:15
SML1226and about the wifi mine does connect automatically and i didn't do anything04:15
lg11mine asks for a keyring pw first04:15
SML1226well my ps3 does04:16
SML1226when i typed in the password the 1st time it asked to remember and i said yes and it worked04:16
SML1226then again i usually had ethernet in and wifi on but wireless was blinking so i think it was wifi04:17
Mood!ati04:19
ubottuFor Ati/NVidia/Matrox video cards, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto04:19
SML1226mood: why'd you bring up video cards? You need help on it or you trying to help somebody else?04:20
MoodSML1226: video card reference was for me. apologies for appearing to be part of the thread04:21
lg11video cards a problem in linux? ! I have never heard of such a thing!04:23
lg11[/sarcasm]04:24
SML1226mood: ok just wondering. thanks for the reply04:25
SML1226lg11: you figure out anything with wifi? is it only on logon or constant? my ps3 started asking me constantly and never stopped. it said couldnt connect but when I opened firefox it worked fine04:26
lg11I installed wicd04:46

owen1and this: "** (xfce-mcs-manager:5974): WARNING **: display_plugin: Unable to configure display resolution"05:24

rockois this true07:08
rocko<rocko> do you have to accept and keep cookies for the settings to stay there DIzzIEe ?07:08
rocko<DIzzIEe> no07:08
rocko<rocko> why is it07:08
rocko<rocko> that when I go back to Global storage settings07:08
rocko<sether> wtf... "+l 420" ?07:08
rocko* sether removes user limit07:08
rocko<rocko> it has the "allow third-party flash content..." is checked again07:08
rocko<DIzzIEe> because youre a tard whos fucking something up07:08
rocko<rocko> no07:08
rocko<DIzzIEe> flash player doesnt remember fucking settings through motherfucking web cookies07:08
rocko<DIzzIEe> wtf?07:09
rocko<rocko> I did not fuck any thing up07:09
rocko<rocko> why does it for get it07:09
rocko<rocko> when I go back to the page ?07:09
rocko<DIzzIEe> it doesnt07:09
rocko<rocko> why is it still checked07:09
rocko<DIzzIEe> or youve been haxed07:09
rocko<DIzzIEe> serves you right for having flash playerinstalled07:09
rockohttp://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager03.html07:09
zoredachepastebin that next time instead of spamming the channel...07:10
rockookay07:11
zoredacheas for asking about Flash, why don't you ask Adobe... I have no idea07:14
zoredachebtw, did you have a real question/problem?  It might be better to start with your actual problem instead of posting half a conversation about a settings manager (whatever that is)07:15
rockonevermind zoredache07:43
rockoI found out what it was07:43
zoredache_k07:43
rockoit was because I did not have the settings .sol file protected with the betterprivacy addon07:43
rockoso it  did not save the information to that file07:44
zoredache_I see07:44
rockonow it does07:44
=== zoredache_ is now known as zoredache
rockosince I have selected it to be protected07:44
rockoI do not trust adobe so I will still used that addon just in case I some how still get flash cookies07:44
zoredachewhy use flash at all?07:45
rockowhy do you use?07:45
rockoI know you can watch them with out flash07:46
rockowhen you download them07:46
rockobut I do not trust download helper07:46
rockoand they are getting more tricker and tricker with downloading them by hand07:46
zoredacheI don't use flash except on a few sites like youtube, amazon, and pandora07:46
rockoI see07:47
rockodo you use download helper /07:47
zoredachefor what?07:47
rockoto download flash videos07:47
rockofrom sites07:47
zoredachemost of what I want is from youtube, and miro or youtube-dl does just fine07:47
rockoI do not like miro07:48
zoredacheeither that or I simply look at the youtube api directly07:48
rockoit takes up way to many resources07:48
zoredacheyou don't have to use it as the player...07:48
rockohow do you do that?07:48
rockoI use more than just youtube though07:48
CloseYetFarwhy are you guys worried about flash player so much07:52
zoredacheI am not worried about it at all...  I think rocko is being paranoid for some odd reason07:52
rockoum flash player can track you07:52
TheSheepCloseYetFar: it has notorious problems that we can't fix07:52
zoredacheffs, everything on the web trakcs you07:52
rockoalso its cookies are not delete by  web browsers07:52
zoredacheif you don't want to be tracked turn of the computer07:53
CloseYetFaryou no what can track you a million times better then flash player, google!!07:53
rockoUnfortunately, few consumers are aware of where Flash cookies are stored or how to control their use. Normal web cookies can be managed via the preferences dialog of most web browsers, but no similar utility is included for these Flash cookies. It is possible for Flash cookies to remain on user's computer indefinitely, as there is no mechanism to set an expiration date on Flash cookies.07:53
rockohttp://epic.org/privacy/cookies/flash.html07:53
TheSheeprocko: can we help you with any problems with xubuntu?07:54
CloseYetFarthere are risks in installing anything from binary07:54
CloseYetFarrocko if you that worries i would recommend switching to openBSD, its much safer then ubuntu07:56
CloseYetFaropps ^ if that worries you07:56
TheSheepCloseYetFar: safer in what way?07:57
rockohow is openbsd safer?07:57
rockojust because it says so07:57
rockodoes not mean it is07:57
rockojust about every software says stuff like that07:57
CloseYetFarwell its designed from the ground up to be the most secure out of the box OS07:57
rockofor example07:57
rockofirefox07:57
rockoyes I know about openbsd07:58
TheSheep!enter | rocko07:58
ubotturocko: Please try to keep your questions/responses on one line - don't use the "Enter" key as punctuation!07:58
rockowhy07:59
CloseYetFarnow openBSD is no where near as user friendly or easy to use, bu thats the trade off07:59
rockodoes it matter07:59
zoredacherocko: not becuase 'they' say so, but because lots of indepentant people have reviewed it and said so07:59
rockoI see07:59
rockoI know that about openbsd07:59
rockowell the  first statement before zoredache08:00
CloseYetFaror gentoo and build your system from the ground up08:00
CloseYetFarthat takes a while08:00
rockoI do not like gentoo that much08:00
rockoI recommend using openbsd if you use a laptop08:00
rockoand want to try one of the bsds out08:00
CloseYetFarstart with freebsd, its the easyest08:01
rockomost development of openbsd is done on laptops so that is probably way08:01
rockoum08:01
TheSheepguys, this is a support channel, really08:01
rockofreebsd did not work on my laptop08:01
rockothe only bsd that worked on my laptop was openbsd08:01
CloseYetFarits funny that about half of the questions in here have nothing to do with Xubuntu08:02
rockoum you can use flash with xubuntu08:02
TheSheeppeople lurk here to help others out, not to read four screenfuls of ranting in the scrollback08:02
rockoso how is that unrelated ?08:02
n2diyhow do I enable remote viewer?08:03
zoredachebecause you aren't asking about how to use flash on xubuntu... you are talking cookies08:03
rockoum08:03
zoredache!x11vnc08:03
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about x11vnc08:03
rockoit has to do with using flash on xubuntu08:03
CloseYetFarremote desktop viewer?08:03
TheSheepn2diy: you want to log in from your xubuntu, or into it?08:03
rockohow is it different08:03
TheSheeprocko: please continue at #xubuntu-offtopic08:04
rockono ones there08:04
CloseYetFarlol08:04
rockopractically08:04
TheSheeprocko: so? you two can still talk there08:05
rockoI see08:05
n2diyTheSheep: I have this Xubuntu box, and downstairs, I have a Ubuntu box. I can view the Ubuntu box down stairs, but this box refuses to let the box dowsstairs view this one.08:05
rockowe all know how to use ignore but I am going to stop my conversation here now08:05
rockookay08:05
rockogood day08:05
CloseYetFari use xtightvncviewer08:06
TheSheepn2diy: you need to install and start the vnc server, it's not enabled by default08:06
TheSheeprocko: see you08:06
zoredachen2diy: you would want to install something like x11vnc08:06
TheSheep!vnc08:06
ubottuVNC is a protocol for remote desktop. https://help.ubuntu.com/community/VNCOverSSH describes how to use it securely.  It works best over fast connections, otherwise look at !FreeNX08:06
rockowhat you mean by that TheSheep ?08:06
TheSheephmm... we don't have a factoid, because it's installed by default on ubuntu08:06
CloseYetFarthen tightvncserver on the machine you wish to access remotly08:06
n2diyTheSheep: ok, I've done that. On Ubuntu you can go to a menu and enable remote viewer, I can't find that here, can it be done on the CLI?08:07
TheSheepn2diy: try enabling it in system->services08:08
n2diyok08:08
n2diyTheSheep: no options there for Remote Viewer?08:09
TheSheepn2diy: you can install the gui thingy from ubuntu, but I'm not sure how it's called08:10
n2diyTheSheep: ok, I've installed a client and server, and hoped that was all I needed, but I guess I need to dig deeper?08:11
TheSheepn2diy: not sure, the server should be configured out of the box, you just start it08:11
CloseYetFari would look in /etc/init.d08:13
CloseYetFarfor the vnc server, then do ps aux to see if its running08:13
n2diyTheSheep: yes, I guess I need to run it from the cli? I was hoping it would give me a menu option?08:13
n2diyTheSheep: I just ran vncviewer, without any connect info, and now it wants to know what server to connect to. Would that be the remote box, which I can connect to anyway?08:15
TheSheepyes08:15
CloseYetFarfeed it ip:108:15
CloseYetFarip is the ip of the remote box08:16
n2diyTheSheep: , CloseYetFar, ok, but that isn't the problem, this box can view the other box, but this box won't let the other box view it.08:17
CloseYetFardoes "this box" have a vnc server running?08:18
n2diyCloseYetFar: yes08:19
n2diyCloseYetFar: yes, I think, it is installed, but I'm not sure it is running?08:20
CloseYetFarif you know the name of it run "ps aux" in the term and see if its listed08:20
n2diyCloseYetFar: not sure of its name, will ps aux accept wildcards?08:22
CloseYetFarwell see if you can find it in /etc/init.d then do "/etc/init.d/servicename start"08:23
n2diyCloseYetFar: roger that.08:24
CloseYetFar/etc/init.d is where all your services are stored08:24
n2diyCloseYetFar: I can't get into init.d, the system keeps dumping me to init.ds? I can see init.d listed under /etc, and I can't see any init.ds,I'm guessing I should be sudo for this?08:28
CloseYetFarhmm its listed but you cant get in?08:30
CloseYetFarwhat does it say when you do "cd /etc/init.d"08:31
n2diyCloseYetFar: this is getting strange, I can't even get into /etc, it is being listed as /etcs after I do the cd /etc command? WTF is going on?08:32
CloseYetFarI think thats just the prompt or something08:33
CloseYetFaruse "pwd" to check your current dir08:33
n2diyCloseYetFar: ok, yes, my prompt could be afu. Let me play somemore.08:34
CloseYetFarlol08:34
n2diyCloseYetFar: ok, no reference to vnc or xvnc in /etc/init.d. I'll have to do some more homework. And the afu command prompt isn't a joke. Back in the DOS days, I used to entertain myself setting up my friends computers so there text was the same color as there backround, adding undesirable text to ther command prompt etc.. So this maybe paybacks?08:44
CloseYetFarlol ok good luck08:45
n2diyCloseYetFar: thanks, same to you.08:47
CloseYetFarnp08:47

MoodIs it possible that my linux box changes/corrupts mp3 files when I download using Nicotine+?17:45
moodogevening :)17:48
cody-somervilleMood, doubtful17:49
MoodWhat's bizarre is that I can play mp3 files downloaded from my Mac OS X. But the very same mp3 file downloaded on my Xubuntu 8.10 (w/ mp3 codec) on Audacious cannot be played. I can't even play the mp3 files downloaded from linux on my Mac OS X17:50
Moodso something is either screwed with my Nictotine+, or Xubuntu corrupts the mp3 files somehow17:51
zoredacheSo download something using a different tool17:51
Moodbut i <3 nicotine+ :-(17:52
zoredacheor download it on your osx, and then transfer it to linux17:52
zoredacheMood: to test...17:52
Moodzoredache: i tried downloading from osx then playing it on linux: it works. but downloading from linux cannot play in osx17:53
Moodit's very strange...17:53
zoredachecheck the md5 sums and see if you have the same file perhaps?17:53
Moodwhat would be the right way of doing so? download file from linux. download file from osx. then run md5 sums on both to see if hash is same?17:57
zoredacheyes, that would prove that you are getting different files...17:58
zoredacheor that nicotine on linux is somehow breaking things17:58
Moodthen how would i see the differences? hex editor? can i use xdiff? or do you know of an mp3 integrity checker?17:59
zoredachenot sure...18:00
zoredacheI guess you could try running a diff or something between the two18:01
J_Litewskihow can i check to see if apport is running?18:22

Moodhmm... md5sums differ on osx mp3 and linux mp3... maybe the mp3 files from linux/nicotine+ are getting corrupt due to NFS18:33
Dante123hi all, I have ubuntu installed on a sony vaio laptop fx120.  When I go to shut it down, the orange bar goes down until it is gone but the pc never completely turns off.  I have acpi=off in boot parameters (cause that was the only way I could get the livecd to load up).  Any suggestions?18:38
TheSheepDante123: find another way to make it load up18:38
TheSheepDante123: acpi=off means no power management, so it can't shotdown on itself18:39
TheSheepDante123: I'd check the forums/google for other options18:39
Moodzoredache: bingo. mp3 file corruption on xubuntu+nicotine due to NFS... i guess the binary bits are different w/ and w/o NFS... md5sum helped. thanks zoredache18:40
J_LitewskiMood, file a bug report about that, i think that needs to be fixed18:42
MoodJ_Litewski: yeah and it's nowhere to be found on google searches18:42

TheSheepby typing 'emacs'?19:24
vermehi20:09
UKGentno - by typing emacs -nw  even more exciting !20:13
SiDiHello20:14
UKGenton xubuntu of course - so as not to be 'off topic'  ...20:14
UKGentHi20:14
* SiDi read the word "emacs" and is now scared.20:15
UKGentlol - the power of that word - don't worry - I am a rank beginner who is just taking 'baby steps' towards the Terminal , emacs, making sure my Xfce Panels do not disappear etc20:16
UKGentI always seem to have this effect on people...20:20
UKGentwhen on xubuntu20:20
SiDiemacs scares me :p20:26
SiDii cant manage to use it20:26
UKGentSiDi I want to use it BECAUSE it scares me!  So I am working my way through a Beginners Tutorial. Did not like the built in one but found a free one on the IBM Site which is really good. Just started it.20:28
UKGentAlthough I had to register with IBM to download it but what the hell20:28
UKGentj/ #emacs20:29
UKGentlol20:29
SiDihehe20:30
SiDiyou still cant join channels ? :D20:30
UKGentand yet I want to use emacs ... I know. I don't know if there is even a channel called that anyway lol20:31
UKGentOh there is !20:31
UKGentwhen you get the j and the / the right way round - I think I am dyslexic or something20:32
SiDimaybe...20:33
SiDii use to join 12 channels at a time so i'm kinda used to it :P20:33
UKGentSiDi I think I might have some sort of cognitive defect because I can be quite intelligent but then I make really stupid mistakes and I cannot do even very simple anagrams !20:34
SiDiWell, that's the case for everyone20:34
SiDii sometimes feel so stupid when i cant do something that is quite basic. We humans have a lot of cpu failures :P20:34
UKGentI think it is - we have a lot of subtle variations in our capabilities - at the 'thread or processes' level - Psychologists should give more attention to this, instead of trying to always measure general abilities IMHO  (yep , way off topic)20:36
UKGentbfn20:43
SiDibfn ?20:46
SiDiSee you21:20

UKGentHi - anyone know the Key Combination for opening a Terminal Window?21:58
UKGenttrying to limit using the mouse21:59
TheSheepUKGent: you can set your own in system->keyboard settings21:59
UKGentTheSheep right - I am doing well with learning how to write files from buffers in emacs - enjoying it.22:00
* TheSheep likes alt+f1 for terminal22:01
TheSheepthe default 'show help' is not so useful, especially when it's in the menu too22:01
UKGentpoint taken - just done that !22:02
TheSheepthe command is xfce4-terminal22:03
johnnymozetti200hello22:04
UKGentAh - like for Panels...   nice - and then Control-Shift Q to Quite the Terminal Window22:05
* TheSheep just presses ctrl+d at the prompt22:05
TheSheepit's the "end of file" character, closes most command-line applications22:06
UKGentI can now boot emacs in double quick time - Oh OK   - such a feeling of Power lol22:06
meowImAKittyNetworking problem! I have Xubuntu on my laptop and XpHome on my desktop, they were all working fine, sharing files and such, now all of a sudden I can't connect to the laptop anymore. :S22:07
UKGentTheSheep ty - I will leave you free to help meowImKitty for a bit !22:08
TheSheepmeowImAKitty: check if samba server is enabled in system->services22:09
UKGentTheSheep I wonder if meow is checking ?22:14
TheSheepor connectivity problems22:14
TheSheepcan't help it22:15
UKGentProbably - in view of what he said the problem was22:15
UKGentbrb Thanks TheSheep22:16
J_Litewskidoes xfce have a damage battery notification?22:24
TheSheepdamage battery?22:27
TheSheepyou mean, something like an explosion countdown for dell's laptops? %)22:28
rockohahahahhaha22:28
J_Litewskia damaged battery is a battery that doesn't take a full charge22:28
J_Litewskiand i'm on a Dell >:(22:28
rockoDUDE  you're gettin22:28
rockoah DELL22:28
rockoDUDE  you're gettin' ah DELL22:29
TheSheepJ_Litewski: all batteries detoriate over time22:29
TheSheeprocko: calm down22:29
J_Litewskiwell, my battery can take only a 35% charge22:29
rockoremember those stupid advertisements "DUDE  you're gettin' ah DELL" with that one kid that looked like he was smoking weed or something22:29
TheSheepJ_Litewski: letting it go to 0% and the charging full might help a little22:30
J_Litewskiit's already donr that numberous times22:31
J_Litewskithe battery has been half-lifed22:31
TheSheepJ_Litewski: how long does it last?22:31
J_Litewskiabout 30 minutes22:31
TheSheepsounds damaged22:31
J_Litewskiyea22:32
Dante123hi all, sony vaio fx120 will not turn off when shutting down.  Any ideas?  BTW, acpi=off in boot parameters.  Anything else I should be trying?22:32
TheSheepbut the battery doesn't really have any sensors that would let linux detect it22:32
Dante123also, this is 8.0422:32
TheSheepDante123: acpi=off is the reason22:32
TheSheepDante123: didn't I tell you that before?22:32
J_Litewskichecking the current mA against the stored mA and to see if it's below 80% would work22:33
Dante123TheSheep, okay will take that out, but what should I do for bios (turn of acpi)?22:33
Dante123or have it turned on???22:33
Dante123Also, I was never able to get livecd to boot until I put acpi=off in there....so that is why I kept it in boot sequence.  Maybe I do not need it now???22:34
J_LitewskiDante123, try taking it out22:34
Dante123Okay, I will take it out.  Report back in 3 minutes.22:34
J_Litewskiif it doesn't boot, just use the liveCD to boot it back up22:34
TheSheepyou can try. if you press esc at the boot screen, a menu with different kernels will pop up. if you press 'e' on any of them, you will be able to edit the boot line. then press 'b' to boot22:34
J_Litewskithat too22:35
TheSheepyou can try different parameters, one that made some of computers work is pci=conf1 for example22:35
TheSheepthis way you don't have to edit the menu.lst file22:35
Dante123 TheSheep, yeah I have done that before.  I tried the "apm=off no-hlt" but once into xsession the system froze22:38
J_Litewskihow does the dell firmware tools work?22:38
Dante123 TheSheep and J_Litewski system will not start with "acpi=off" missing from boot parameters.22:40
Dante123Further suggestions?22:40
J_Litewskiis it on in the BIOS?22:41
Dante123J_Litewskin off in the bios now, shall I enable it?22:41
Dante123I think it is off, let me check22:41
J_Litewskienable it22:44
J_Litewskithen try booting with acpi=on22:44
Dante123In the bios, there are settings about the cpu (max performance, recommended, disable) no specific enable/disable apic22:44
Dante123I put it to the recommended setting.22:44
J_Litewskirestore everything to defult22:44
J_Litewskiyea22:44
Dante123will retry with apic=on22:45
J_Litewskikk22:45
Dante123okay, rebooted and with cpu in the recommended (under Power) setting and with it disabled- the system boots into a weird screen- bars of colour or black with some colour here and there....22:46
J_Litewskidoes it completely boot?22:47
Dante123now I am trying with apic=on  (about boot up previously without the acpi=off- I dont know if it fully booted- says starting up....then eventually goes to weird bars and black screen)22:48
J_Litewskihmmm22:49
Dante123ONLY way I get a normal boot up is acpi=off22:49
Dante123With power on cpu set to disabled or recommended.  but TheSheep says acpi=off is why the system wont turn off.  Looks like between a rock and a hard place.22:50
J_LitewskiDante123, i don't think xubuntu likes your computer22:50
Dante123J_Litewski, this has to be solveable.22:50
J_Litewskii would say hard-shutoff, but that tends to degrade the *buntu systems22:51
J_Litewskii would sugest trying a Damn Small Linux LiveCD22:52
J_Litewskior a pre-8.04 xubuntu liveCD22:53
Dante123I tried "sudo shutdown -h now" from terminal with same results....lcd on with ubuntu and black bar22:55
Dante123J_Litewski, gimme a break.  I am not giving up yet or switching to some other linux distro.22:55
J_Litewskidid pressing the power button at that screen turn it off?22:55
Dante123Yeah, I can turn it off with power button.  So if that is what I have to do so be it....but I would prefer that it turn itself off.22:56
Dante123And dammit, this should be solveable.22:56
Dante123Will keep googling22:56
J_Litewskiit might be22:56
J_Litewskilike i said, try a pre-8.04 xubuntu22:57
J_Litewskithat may be nicer to your system22:57
J_LitewskiDante123, I had to do 7.04 install to get 7.10 to work22:57
J_Litewskiit's sometimes that easy22:58
* J_Litewski sighs23:00
J_Litewskii need to add yet another repository to my list...23:00
J_LitewskiDamn Dell23:00
J_Litewskiis it possible to manually add a repository?23:08
J_Litewskisince Dell is lame and doesn't recognize my system23:09
zoredacherepositories are configured by updating /etc/apt/sources.list23:09
TheSheepor through system->software sources23:10
Shooreeany thoughts on what could be the solution to window borders not showing up after updating and a system restart? using compiz and emerald, didnt touch them, just updated and now cant see any window title bars. which means I cant close/move windows23:32
J_LitewskiShooree, sounds like the window decorations didn't load23:33
TheSheepShooree: try starting compiz somehow23:34
