UKGentvery interesting - I am having a look at an item in my firefox cache - described as _Cache_001 . When you load it into emacs you can read a list of what looks like cookies. I am just being nosey .00:52
UKGentThe reason I am mentioning it is that I have just installed, updated and tested the Clam AV and it did find what it described as a cache virus which was in the same location. I have deleted that item. Maybe it was a false positive - who knows?00:55
UKGentemacs seems to be able to interpret all sorts of stuff that is down as 'zero size' when you look at the Properties. I find it very interesting but do not understand most of it... but at least I can have a look.00:59
zoredacheyou didn't change that file while firefox was open did you?01:00
UKGentNo01:00
zoredacheThat seems like it would break firefox01:00
UKGentwell as I understand it - emacs stores the file in a buffer and only changes it if you tell it to....01:01
UKGentI just use it to take a look01:01
UKGentIt is amazing how much information is fed back in these little text snippets... I find it interesting reading !01:02
UKGentI would like to live long enough to really find out how emacs works - it seems very powerful but you are right - 'curiosity killed the cat'  never mind - I do have another computer if I break this one lol01:05
zoredachethe source is available...  If you want to know how it really works, that is where you could look.01:06
UKGentDon't think I am quite up to interpreting that yet - although I will probably take a look. Roger Penrose recommends people to just read the equations anyway if they don't understand and see what happens!   I am working my way through the tutorial. I am old 50 years old. I wish I was young like some of you guys... I still find it very interesting just playing with it.. carefully of course !01:08
UKGentI am toying with the idea of attending the EuroPython Even because it is not that far from me. I could probably learn a lot just sitting in on some of the tutorials & events and just listening. Might be worth going.01:10
J_Litewskiwho knows of the MagicJack?01:10
UKGentLitewski is that someones nick ?01:13
J_Litewskino, it's a device that you plug into the computer that gives you a phone line01:15
J_Litewskii was just wondering if anyone cracked it yet01:15
J_Litewskisince the inventor isn't thinking about finishing the Linux driver for it01:16
UKGentLitewski does it work with international systems or just US ?01:16
J_Litewskiit works with any computer that has a USB 2.0 port that runs windows or an intel mac01:17
UKGentLitewski sounds good - so you could hook up from just about anywhere with that ...01:20
J_Litewskiyep01:21
J_Litewskiit gives you a US phone number01:21
UKGentLitewski - yes - that is what I was assuming01:22
J_Litewskiwhere is a good voice chatroom at?02:09
jaysonHi all. I am noticing that a few of my GUI applications display all scrambled.. MythTV and a game called Adanaxis. Any ideas where I could start looking for a fix?02:10
wonderpoopcan somebody tell me how to switch from remote server login back to regular login in a shell prompt?02:28
* cody-somerville heads to bed, later folks02:30
zoredachewonderpoop: what do you mwan remote server login?02:34
zoredachewhat do you mean*02:34
wonderpoophi02:35
wonderpoopyou know how in windows login screen02:35
wonderpoopyou have the list of users02:35
wonderpoopwell she wanted that02:35
wonderpoopso i went into user settings added users for login02:35

wonderpoopso now when i boot up it searches for hosts02:35
wonderpoopbut of course doesn't find any02:35
wonderpoopi was wondering how i could just access the login options in the command prompt02:36
wonderpoopgo back to regular l/p screen instead of the network one02:36
kavehsomeone at my place decided to update my xubuntu from 8.04 to 8.10 - firefox started not working properly, the back and forward would be greyed out, it wouldnt put proper home page etc.. - so i googled, several solutions said to remove "xyz.default" and profiles.ini in the .mozilla/firefox folder and then remove / install firefox again. i did that and now firefox wants to make a profile, i dont know how to edit the permission02:37
kavehs so that it can make the profile folder in the .mozilla/firefox folder and when i make the profile elsewhere it says the profile is in use. then i made the profile on a folder on desktop, firefox loads but it wont work at all and a message pops up telling me "Could not initialize the applications security component"02:37
kavehanyone able to help?02:38
wonderpoopit's under the login02:39
kaveh?02:40
wonderpoopgo to the login where you add users02:40
wonderpoopoh i had a question02:40
wonderpoopdunno if he is researching it02:40
wonderpoopi'm stuck in the login screen for host servers02:40
wonderpoopwant to go back to the regular login/pass screen02:40
kavehoh right i thought u were answering my thing02:40
kavehlol02:40
wonderpoopbut since i'm stuck in the server login screen02:40
wonderpoopi can't02:40
wonderpoopso i was wondering if there was just a shell command i could use02:41
trWhat is the command to see usb devices in Xubuntu?02:47
trI want to see if the machine sees a digital camera connected via usb.02:47
jaysonyou could type mount to see all the mounted devices02:48
wonderpoopyou know how you can change your login settings in ubuntu?02:49
wonderpoopadd users02:49
wonderpoopadd passwords02:49
wonderpoopadd a little pic for the login screen02:49
wonderpoopunder /usr/share/faces02:49
wonderpoopne1 here ever go into that?02:49
jaysonstumped02:49
wonderpoopif you go to menu -> settings -> login02:50
wonderpoopit's right there02:50
wonderpoopi assume that e1 in here is using xubuntu?02:50
kavehanybody here02:50
kavehable to help me with firefox02:50
tryes02:50
trwhat is the issue?02:50
kavehits completely broken - i just updated to ubuntu 8.1002:50
kavehit wouldnt save homepage / kept doing first run02:51
kavehthe front/back was greyed out02:51
wonderpoopi clicked the remote login like i want to log into a remote server host02:51
jaysonwonderpoop - nice!02:51
wonderpoopand now i can't change back02:51
kavehi googled a bit - most solutiosn were the same - delete "xyz.default" where xyz is just random letters/numbers02:51
kavehand profile.ini02:51
kavehthen reinstall. i did that, now it wants to make a profile, i cant make the profile in the .mozilla/firefox folder cause of permissions so i made on desktop02:51
trWhat version of Firefox?02:51
kaveh3.0.8 i think02:52
kavehya02:52
kaveh3.0.802:52
kavehit works off desktop, but doesnt save it to load the 2nd time and "failed to initialize applications security components"02:52
trIf you log in as root, does it behave differently?02:53
kavehno02:53
kavehrather i cant log in as root - has some random generated password02:54
kavehim completely new to ubuntu :P02:54
kavehhow do i change the permissions so that i can edit thigns in .mozilla02:57
kavehi mean - im logged in as "kaveh"02:57
kavehand its in /home/kaveh/.mozilla02:57
kavehso i assumed i could edit it.. but i cant :\02:57
trsudo chmod 777 ~/.mozilla02:57
trtry that.02:58
tryou can edit things with root permissions by typing sudo nano -w ~/.mozilla/filetoedit02:59
trsudo (makes the command that follows it behave as if root executed it)03:00
trnano is a termnal-based text editor03:00
kavehcool ill give it a go03:00
trGood luck!03:01
jaysonWhen I open an app that uses the full screen, the display is always distorted and scrambled. Any idea how to fix this03:01
trBe careful with sudo... remember things are set with permissions to keep you from screwing things up! But don't worry too much.03:01
kavehhmm - also since i upgraded my graphics driver (nvidia-glx) was removed. when i try to reinstall through simantec it puts everything Xorg and xserver-desktop under "To be removed"03:02
kavehwhen i use the nvidia installer it fails to extract03:03
kavehand i remember when it ried the nvidia installer from their site there was something wrong with the nvidia kernel (when it was ubuntu 8.04)03:03
trWhat is your gfx card?03:05
kaveh9800gt03:05
kaveh:D! firefox worked03:05
kavehthank you :D03:05
jaysonnot sure. This is a brand new laptop. How can I find out?03:05
trCool. NP03:05
kavehwhen you say distorted what do you mean?03:05
trjayson: sorry I was talking to kaveh03:06
trjayson: What is the laptop?03:06
jaysonkaveh I am using an hp dp7 adm truitron-x2 ati radeon03:06
kavehthats a nice laptop03:07
kavehmy father has a similar one03:07
jaysondistorted like the resolution is off and the display is scrambled03:07
jaysonvery nice.03:07
kavehmy bet is it didnt ship with linux driversto03:07
kaveh?03:07
jaysonnope. The first thing I did when I powered it up was install xubuntu03:08
kavehhmm03:08
kavehmy brother just did the same thing - had similar issue he swapped it to windows03:08
jaysonarrrrgggg. hope thats not my only solution03:08
trkaveh: I found this on web: Hi. As far as I know, the 9800 GT is supported in the nVidia 180 series drivers, including the one found in Intrepid's repositories; so if you have Ubuntu 8.10 you can search for nvidia-180-modaliases and nvidia-glx-180 in Synaptic.03:09
kavehlets hope03:09
jaysonthe graphics card is ATI Radeon hd 3200 if that helps03:10
kavehthanks tr :D03:10
kavehim just googling it with the firefox you got working xD03:10
trkaveh: np03:10
kavehwhile i install the graphics03:10
kavehjayson03:10
kavehi *think* it might be related to the motherboard rather then the graphics card03:11
jaysonyes03:11
jaysonhmm That might be just as bad03:11
kavehmy brother is a freak with these things - refuses to teach me but i sat around watching him and i remember he was complaining about the motherboard not working properly03:11
jaysonwould switching to ubuntu vice xubuntu help?03:12
kavehthat i am not sure about03:12
kavehive only very recently swapped to ubuntu03:12
kavehless then a wek03:13
kaveh*week03:13
trjayson: Not sure... are you running live cd or installed?03:13
jaysoninstalled03:13
trWell, you could download the livecd version of Ubuntu and try that...03:13
trWhat is the model of your laptop again? it is HP d7?03:14
jaysonwhat is the difference between the two?03:14
kavehdp703:14
jaysonyes HP d703:14
jaysonHPDV7-1247 cl03:14
jaysonDV703:15
trjayson: mainly it is the window manager (xubuntu uses xfce4 which is a 'lighter weight' desktop, and Ubuntu uses Gnome)03:15
jaysoncould I install gnome on xubuntu03:15
Moodyou could install gnome on xubuntu, but why? if you want a small footprint on an older machine, use xfce instead03:17
Moodif you really want a small footprint, you may want to consider fluxbox on a debian install even03:18
jaysonWell thats what I was thinking, but this is not an older machine, plenty of disk space, memory etc03:18
trMood: He has a really new laptop and is having video probs...03:18
Moodah, ok03:18
trjayson: Sorry I can't be of any more help... I'm off to bed.03:19
trlater all.03:19
jaysoncan I upgrad from xubuntu to ubuntu03:19
jaysonno prob tr thanks03:19
jaysonany ideas Mood:03:19
Moodjayson: can you test your ati radeon card on a different machine? if you can, it'd be a way to rule out a bad card03:20
jaysonunfortunately no Its a laptop.03:20
Moodcoincidentally, earlier this week, my vid card died on me (fan died, heat death). i had these strange streaks and ghosting... originally thought it was a bad driver or monitor setting. but testing it on a diff machine, it was the same, hence bad card03:21
jaysonAh03:22
Moodjayson: does the live cd boot also give you video problems?03:22
jaysonNever tried the live cd boot. I will have to give that a try.03:22
jaysonMood: I am going to try migrating to full ubuntu to see how that goes. If your arround after I reboot, I will let you know how it turns out03:24
Moodthere's a good chance that going from xubuntu to ubuntu will not fix your video issues. xubuntu is ubuntu with a different windows manager and some packages not installed out of the box03:26
jaysonI am hoping that my issue is with xfce. Could that be it?03:28
jaysonbe back after a reboot03:39
jaysonwell switching to gnome did nothing.03:47
jaysonnicer desktop though03:48
kaveh_1guess whos back and very happy!04:16
kaveh_1anywho04:16
kaveh_1i have another question if anyone can help - its about tuxguitar04:17

ReliantWhat's the difference between xubuntu and ubuntu?10:16
knomeReliant, basically, xubuntu runs xfce and ubuntu runs gnome10:17
knomeReliant, there is more differences, but that's the most visible one10:17
Reliantahh, cool, that was the main thing I was hoping for :)10:17
ReliantI was using KDE on Ubuntu, but when they released those plasmoids, I dropped KDE and started using XFCE. Just did a new install of the Beta of Ubuntu, and having sound & wireless problems in XFCE. Think I should just install Xubuntu?10:19
knome!purexfce10:19
ubottuIf you want to remove all !KDE and !Gnome packages and have a default !Xubuntu system follow the instructions here « http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/purexfce »10:19
knomeyou don't have to reinstall totally, if you don't want10:20
Reliantnot really. I managed to get the sound working from reading the forums, but I can't get the wireless to save the WEP key10:21
knomeright..10:21
Reliantit autosaves in gnome, but not xfce. It looks like it's the same app too10:22
knomeReliant, have you searched launchpad if it's a known bug?10:29
Reliantlaunchpad?10:29
knome!launchpad10:30
ubottuLaunchpad is a collection of development services for Open Source projects. It's Ubuntu's bug tracker, and much more; see https://launchpad.net/10:30
knomei can confirm this, however10:32
Reliantthere we go. Found a post with a solution. It requires GNome libraries to be enabled via the XFCE Startup and Session Manager, then deleting my wireless entry in the network manager and re-creating it10:34
knomecan you post me a link?10:36
Relianthttp://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=12123410:36
Reliantdon't have the link to the forum post that gave me the idea to delete the wireless connection entry10:37
knomeok. thanks anyway10:38
mib_2ozkgxvlHello10:39
knome!hi | mib_2ozkgxvl10:39
ubottumib_2ozkgxvl: Hi! Welcome to #xubuntu!10:39
mib_2ozkgxvlI got abit of a problem...10:39
knome!ask10:39
ubottuPlease don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)10:39
mib_2ozkgxvlI locked myself out of my user thingy, I naffed my main user account, so made a new one via terminal, but every time i click the Users and Groups button I get denied access, help?10:40
mib_2ozkgxvlNote, I am a linux beginner.10:40
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, it is a really bad thing to remove the first user account.10:42
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, i suppose you no have no user account with sudo rights.10:42
mib_2ozkgxvlNope, but I can log into root in terminal?10:42
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, i suppose you can't10:42
mib_2ozkgxvlBasicly, how do I grant a user sudo rights via terminal?10:43
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, there is ways to recover but i'm no expert in that.10:43
knome!sudoers10:43
ubottuSorry, I don't know anything about sudoers10:43
knomethere is /etc/sudoers which can be edited only by root or a sudoer.10:43
mib_2ozkgxvlWhats that?10:44
knomeit is a list of people who have rights to sudo10:44
knomebut it doesn't help you a lot10:44
mib_2ozkgxvlIs there a way to open/edit it?10:44
knomeand editing it is highly unwanted10:44
knomesuppose there is but as i said, i'm no expert in that10:44
mib_2ozkgxvlBugger.10:45
ReliantIf you are totally locked out, there are ways to boot into a recovery mode that gives you root access to the drive itself, letting you edit those files. I'm don't know enough about it to walk you through it, but it can be done10:45
mib_2ozkgxvlThrough thunar?10:45
Reliantwhat's thunar?10:46
knomeReliant, the file manager in xfce.10:46
mib_2ozkgxvlThe default file thing10:46
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, you'd be better asking in #ubuntu. there is more people there and this isn't xubuntu specific.10:47
Reliantahh, no, it has to be done at boot time through the boot manager, such as grub or lilo. There also boot CDs that can bring you into the recovery mode10:47
mib_2ozkgxvlErm I have got sudoers open10:47
mib_2ozkgxvlIt looks simple enough10:47
knomemib_2ozkgxvl, you can *read* it, but you can't modify it.10:48
mib_2ozkgxvlI think I can editit10:48
Reliantyou should get an error when you try to save it10:49
mib_2ozkgxvlYea, I though using sudo gedit would work, but didn't10:50
prenhi, how can i lanuch nautilus in xfce without it taking over the desktop? i just want the file manager10:56
prenhi10:56
prenhi, how can i lanuch nautilus in xfce without it taking over the desktop? i just want the file manager10:56
knomepren, 'nautilus --no-desktop'10:56
knomepren, please don't flood10:56
prenknome, sure thanks10:56
prenmy xchat didnt display my comment so i thought it didn't get there (so i reposted...)10:57
prenbtw knome if i use nautilus - do you think it will take much more resources than thunar?10:58
knomeyes, i know it will.10:58
preni see, the reason i use is because it has an extension taht allows me to resize pix on right-click , can i get thunar to do that ? (and rotate if possble)10:59
knomesuppose not, but you could install something like mirage and add a shortcut to that11:00
knomewith custom actions11:00
prenlike "open with mirage" or something?11:00
Reliantxfce have a better ftp prog than gftp? Don't get me wrong, I like gftp, just somewhat new to what alternatives xfce has to offer :)11:01
knomepren, you will get that in the application menu anyway, once you open an image file11:02
prenknome,  in thunar?11:02
knomepren, yes.11:02
prenknome mmm,,,so install mirage and then,,,?11:03
ablomenReliant, i use filezilla nowadays, some parts are better then gftp, some parts are worse (yes, it is possible), overal its a bit better imho11:09
Reliantyeah, I use that one for windows11:10
ReliantI had forgotten there was a linux version11:10
ablomenanoter option is mounting ftp, works a lot better but i have found that with a lot of different websites its a bit difficult to manage11:11

ubottuHi! Welcome to #xubuntu!16:49
J_Litewskiis it bad if processes get killed for lack of memory?17:32
TheSheepJ_Litewski: yes17:34
TheSheepJ_Litewski: you should have some swap for such cases17:34
J_Litewskiwell, i was working on fixing the x server, since my tweaks caused it to crash, and when i was in terminal mode, it kept complaining about killing processes or child processes17:35
vermehi17:36
J_Litewskiand i was having the problem of xubuntu lagging like no tommorrow17:36
TheSheepsomething used all available memory17:37
J_Litewskii ran top while in terminal mode, and nothing looked out of place17:37
TheSheepand the system had to start killing processes to keep some space for itself17:37
TheSheephow about sudo top?17:37
J_Litewskimostly it was xserver and thunar17:37
J_Litewskididn't try that17:38

nighstalkerIs anyone having trouble with their programs disasppearing at random in Ibex? Every since I've upgraded, programs just randomly turn off and disappear with no errors or anything. I've done a reformat and reinstall to see if that would fix it, but no luck.18:50
fortunevMood: are you on?18:50
Moodyessir18:51
fortunevremember the issue with the video card late yesterday evening18:51
Moodyeseir18:51
Mooddid you get it fixed?18:52
fortunevd/l the driver from adm and everything is working like a charm. the default driver was causing all the trouble18:52
Moodwow, that's surprising. was the default driver specific to ati radeon?18:53
fortunevto ati. Infact I got a notification saying that my vid card would not work well unless I installed the update. After the update I got all the probs. disabled the driver prob went away but slow video. dl the adm driver and lightning fast vids18:55
Moodgood to hear your card wasn't busted18:56
Moodwas the problem driver open-source? or from AIT?18:56
MoodATI*18:56
Moodthe notification you got -- it was from xubuntu? or from a website?18:57
fortunevthink the driver was open source, but not shure how to tell18:57
fortunevthe notification was from xubuntu18:57
Moodvia synaptic?18:57
fortunevyes18:58
Moodweirdness... it may be a bug. what was your vid card again?18:58
fortunevradeon HD320018:58
fortunevI could not find anything like it in any repository18:59
Moodso what driver did you install?19:00
Moodthe first time, the one that didn't work19:00
fortunevit was the driver from the notification ATI something ...19:01
Moodwell that may have done it... installing drivers not intended for your hardware is destined for problemos :-s19:01

Enigmanaw, but i had a quick question about Xfce, is it possible to make the bottom bar to static? I have it scaled across the screen, but when i open in more windows, it scales off the screen20:12
vinnlEnigma, what is "scaled"?20:13
Enigmai mean20:13
Enigmastretched20:13
vinnlEnigma, you mean it's set to "Full Width"?20:13
Enigmasi20:14
vinnlAnd the panel reaches outside the screen?20:14
Pres-GasEnigma, you can right click on some blank space in there and you should see an option to go to Properties for "Task List"....20:14
Enigmayeah, i think the problem is that xfce doesn't show my correct resolution20:14
Pres-Gasyou can then manipulate how the windows get stacked in there and whatnot20:15
vinnlAh that might very well be... Or perhaps you just need to reconfigure the monitor itself20:15
Enigmavinnl, i can't, it's a laptop20:16
vinnlWell, surely you can also configure that? (I don't really often use laptops :P)20:17
Enigmai blame it on the lack of acceptance of linux for the people at Compaq20:18
Enigmafor linux*20:18

ubottuIf you're having problems with sound, first ensure ALSA is selected, by double clicking on the volume control, then File -> Change Device (ALSA Mixer). If that fails, see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Sound - https://help.ubuntu.com/community/SoundTroubleshooting - http://alsa.opensrc.org/DmixPlugin - For playing audio files, see !Players and !MP322:10
