geek1hi, this may sound dumb, but can someone tell me what the kernel is for?00:58
geek1hello?01:00

dandel0o' last set of updates on jaunty just knocked out the windows based install i had ><;02:31

genady12lapno one here?06:59
Kamping_Kaiserkees, is it possible the package(s?) we were talking about a few day s ago will require linux-image-* meta packages to get rebuilt? eg, http://packages.ubuntu.com/search?keywords=linux-image-386 has different versions for hardy and hardy-updates. all other releases have the same versions in the release and security pockets10:45

apwsmb_tp, this thread may be relevant to you for the press-a-key-to-boot bug: http://www.mail-archive.com/linux-kernel@vger.kernel.org/msg240281.html14:21
smb_tpapw, hm, interesting. thanks.14:22
apwno idea if its already in our kernel etc, just hit it by accident14:23
smb_tpI don't think is is disabled currently with our kernels14:24
genady12lap_apw, ping14:40
apwgenady12lap_, hi14:42
genady12lap_hey14:43
apwsmb_tp, reading that thread the wisdom seems to be 'you can use hpet=force' and things just work14:43
genady12lap_I am having problem with speedstep14:43
apwgenady12lap_, ok, what sort of problems, with what cpu14:43
smb_tpapw, that would imply hpet is not used somehow... hm, I have to get to that thread... later...14:44
apwsmb_tp, there is an implication that it might not be for sure14:44
smb_tpapw, ok, definitely something to look at... thanks for the pointer14:45
genady12lap_apw, bug 36019214:46
ubot3Malone bug 360192 in linux "speedstep (cpufreq in PIII) not loaded in the kernel" [Undecided,Incomplete] https://launchpad.net/bugs/36019214:46
apwsmb_tp, i happen to be looking at bugs which complain about issues with tickless and C!E in combination and that was Ingo's recommendation as a solution rathter than any other fix14:47
smb_tpapw, It would be interesting whether it is possible to check whether hpet is only partially active (or whatever the implications are)14:48
apwsmb_tp, agree its not at all clear what is and is not being used14:48
genady12lap_apw, what do you think?14:50
apwgenady12lap_, i'd say its likely that its not enabled because it provides no benefit on cpu's which don't change voltage when they change frequency14:52
genady12lap_but it worked some time ago14:53
apwsome time ago?14:53
genady12lap_I dont remember when, but it works now on windows14:53
apwthere has been much debate on power saving, just because windows does something though is no indicator it is sensible14:54
apwif i remember the argument correctly, then if your cpu has C2 power saving mode, and CPU frequency but no CPU voltage scaling then there is exacly 0 benefit from changing the frequency14:54
apwas the benefit of going into C2 is exactly the same as it would be in the states inserted into the cpu to 'slow' it down14:55
apwie. it will consume the same number of active cycles, its just the idle cycles are spread differently.14:55
genady12lap_oh14:55
apwhttps://bugs.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/powernowd/+bug/17764614:55
ubot3Malone bug 177646 in linux "Celeron M530, no frequence scaling" [Medium,Invalid] 14:55
apwthere is much write up on that bug in this area14:56
genady12lap_apw, so what can I do to save more power?14:56
apwi assume you have used powertop and followed its advice14:57
genady12lap_btw I tried the hibernation script and I have problems. (If you are the person who needs to hear them)14:58
apwsuspend_test ?  if so did it get you to file bugs?14:58
genady12lap_the problem it wont resume automatically15:00
genady12lap_and I should disable rt61pci module15:00
=== k-s[AWAY] is now known as k-s
genady12lap_powertop is cool15:03
apwgenady12lap_, make sure there is a bug filed which says that for sure15:19
keesKamping_Kaiser: I'm not sure what you mean.15:51

manjoI am seeing an issue where on suspend/resume after an AC power transition the ATA taskfile status register is set to 0xd0 (invalid value), any ideas ? 16:51
apwsmb_tp, was there a wake-on-lan bug hanging about, something to do with a bios setting to make it work16:56
smb_tpI do not remember a wol not working one. The one I looked at was rather _always_ working after an update16:57
smb_tpBut ask for ehttool output, that should tell whether wol should be active from the drivers perspective16:58
smb_tpethtool even16:58
apwsmb_tp, thanks16:59

mdzapw: do you want help writing that bugpattern for bug 359864, or is it not worth it at this point?  I just noticed you marked another dupe18:58
ubot3mdz: Error: Could not parse data returned by Malone: The read operation timed out18:58
mdzapw: er, 35217818:58
apwso far we don't have a huge pile of dups for it, i believe apport is now going off so i suspect its a non-issue18:59
apwthough it would be useful to learn that skill for sure18:59

aweapw: ping20:10
apw awe hi20:11
awethanks for the debugging tip.  looks like it's a panic in the uvcvideo driver's suspend function20:12
apwvery nice20:12
aweapw: how do i get a copy of the stack trace to add to the bug?20:12
apwdid you get the whole stack?20:12
apwnormally we take a photo20:12
apwif the top of the panic is missing there is a setfont command on that page which can make the page longer20:12
apwthen get a photo20:12
aweapw: modern tech @ it's best eh?20:13
apwsadly yes20:13
aweapw: i see Call Trace: so I think that's the top20:13
apwyou can use a usb setrial dongle, and another one, and a cross over20:13
apwcall trace is normally a few lines down, whats the first20:13
apwbut get a photo off that one regardless, and then redo it with the other font20:13
aweok20:14
manjoapw, I think I found a work around to the suspend resume causing ATA errors on the samsung NC10 finally20:52
aweapw: no setfont command found...  it's either not part of 8.04, or was removed from the core netbook derivative21:01
smb_tpawe, For Hardy the magic runes are: consolechars -f /usr/share/consolefonts/Uni1-VGA8.psf.gz21:03
awesmb_tp: thanks!21:05
awesmb_tp: when i run that command i get: set_kernel_font: Invalid argument21:08
smb_tpawe, did you run it on a text console?21:09
* awe feels dumb21:10
awei just opened a gnome-terminal21:10
smb_tpYeah, unfortunately it won't work there. :)21:11
awesmb_tp: ok, i think i know how to do it now... i need to switch to a virtual console right?21:19
smb_tpawe, Oops, sorry I thought you found out. Err, yeah, best use vt1 for that21:20
cody-somervillesconklin, Hi. I was wondering if there was any progress on bug #352615?21:36
ubot3Malone bug 352615 in linux "Please provide squashfs-modules udeb" [Medium,Triaged] https://launchpad.net/bugs/35261521:36
sconklincody-somerville: no, I have had more urgent bugs, and won't be able to look at that one this week21:37
awesmb_tp: so i managed to change the font, and when i hit the crash now, i get gibberish...looks like i get the top 40% of each line, and then it's overwritten by the line below it.21:41
smb_tpawe, Hm, strange. Would ls and stuff work correctly after changing the font? For me here it is working ok (normal use without a crash)21:43
awehmmm... i know what i did.  i switched back to the normal ui.  duh. lemme try again.21:44
smb_tpThough even that works here on my laptop21:45
aweyea, but this is dennis the menace.  ;)21:46
