yellowkingIs there a way to bundle a movie file and meta data to easily move between mythtv systems?07:09
hadsNot really.07:28

balachmarHi, is it recommended to use ext4 for both the root partition as well as the recordings partition? As it does perform better with larger files than ext3 previously did. Last time I used XFS.09:46
balachmarI am talking about it in combination with 9.0409:50

balachmarI am trying to install mythbuntu 9.04 but my hard disk is not showing up in the installer. It is a sata disk and I did turn on ahcp or something.12:10
balachmarahci, now trying raid12:15
balachmarthat also didn't work. will now try ide and is that doesn't work ide with kernel option all_generic_ide12:20
balachmarok it was all because of this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/19049212:59
balachmarseems it has something to do with my mobo12:59
balachmarcan someone help me with the default /var/lib/dpkg/alternatives/x-window-manager from mythbuntu 9.04?13:19
balachmarOr where to find it, I seem to have broken that file...13:19

balachmarCan no one check what the file looks like on his system? Even if it isn't the 9.0413:38
balachmarI just need to get it back in a readable/working state.13:38
balachmarnevermind removing the file and doing a aptitude safe upgrade solved the problem13:41

gumpert345hi, what would be the cheapest IR remote, that is automatically recognised and pre-configured  by mythbuntu?15:24
gumpert345I'd like to choose it from this menu: http://www.mythbuntu.org/files/images/mcc_remote.png and see it then work out-of-the-box15:26

frozenskunk1Can someone please give me some help trying to figure out why my system is running very slow using 8.10? The same box ran fine under earlier versions, and knoppmyth also before I switched to mythbuntu. Using top, I see that I have high cpu wait most of the time, it always in double digits, and over 90% isn't uncommon... I suspected maybe DMA wasn't enabled or something and the hard drive is the bottle neck, however when I ru21:19
Shadow__X1or are you sure its seated all the way21:19
Shadow__X1frozenskunk1, hdparm -Tt /dev/sda21:20
frozenskunk1thanks, let me give that a try! Whats the difference in the -Tt and -tT?21:21
Shadow__X1its the same one tests the hard drives cache then the other tests the actual thoroughput21:21
frozenskunk1I see. this one returns the same labels (Timing cached reads, and buffered disk reads) but values are 164.44 and 13.14 (respectively), 13 seems quite low?21:23
Shadow__X1what kind of hd is it21:23
Shadow__X1and yes 13 is low21:23
Shadow__X1i get around 60 but mine is a somewhat old sata drive21:24
frozenskunk1This is only a year or two old drive, 320GB if I recall correctly21:24
Shadow__X1sata?21:24
frozenskunk1I don't remember the interface type. Is there an easy way to check?21:24
Shadow__X1uh yeah let me try and remember21:25
frozenskunk1short of pulling the drive and looking at the label?21:25
Shadow__X1whats the name of the drive21:25
frozenskunk1Thanks! Sure appreciate the help! This has severely had a negative impact on the WAF!21:25
Shadow__X1like is it /dev/sda or ata21:26
frozenskunk1it is /dev/sda21:26
Shadow__X1then its sata or scsi to my knowledge and it is a safe guess to say sata21:26
Shadow__X1so sata21:26
frozenskunk1sudo hdparm -I /dev/sda tells me it's an ATA devices (WDC)21:28
tgm4883Shadow__X1, all drives are /dev/sdX21:28
Shadow__X1also hdparm -T gives some info21:28
Shadow__X1I*21:28
Shadow__X1tgm4883, really?21:28
tgm4883IDE and SATA that is21:29
tgm4883yea21:29
Shadow__X1hmm so then how do you see if its sata21:29
tgm4883same way you tell if a cat is female, flip it over ;)21:29
Shadow__X1lol with the system running21:29
frozenskunk1can you check a cat's sex from the command line? ;-)21:29
tgm4883well open the case?21:30
tgm4883frozenskunk1, with the proper driver ;)21:30
Shadow__X1frozenskunk1, you can get the model number and look it up21:30
frozenskunk1doing that now, give me a minute and I will let you know what I find.21:31
frozenskunk1WDC WD3200JB-00KFA0 appears to be a 320gb, 7200rpm, 16mb IDE 3.5"21:33
frozenskunk1Here we go: Western Digital WD3200JB Caviar SE 320GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache IDE Ultra ATA100. Model: WD3200JB-00KFA0 RoHS Compliant.21:35
Shadow__X1hmm interesting ide21:36
Shadow__X1well ide should be able to hit around 40MB/sec21:36
frozenskunk1leave it to me to find the 'interesting' hardware... ;-)21:36
frozenskunk1Could DMA be an issue? That was one of the first trees I was barking up, but haven't been able to enable it using hdparm..21:37
Shadow__X1it def is a dma issue21:38
Shadow__X1do you have the hd on the same cable as your cdrom21:38
frozenskunk1I don't think so, I would probably put them on different channels21:38
frozenskunk1Just double checked, and they are separte21:39
Shadow__X1hmm ok21:41
Shadow__X1https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DMA21:42
frozenskunk1Yeah, I found that page earlier today. when I try the hdparm section (the -d1 part) I get errors21:44
frozenskunk1give me a minute to flip over there and I will tell you waht they are21:44
Shadow__X1k21:44
frozenskunk1ok, when I try sudo hdparm -d1 /dev/sda I get the following:21:48
frozenskunk1"/dev/sda:21:48
frozenskunk1setting using_dma to 1 (on)21:48
frozenskunk1HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device21:48
frozenskunk1HDIO_GET_DMA failed: Inappropriate ioctl for device"21:48
Shadow__X1hmm21:49
Shadow__X1try searching that issue sounds like its saying that device doesnt support it21:49
frozenskunk1I tried to figure that out and found other people that had the same error, but never found a solution. It also seemed that all the posts I found were quite dated, which led me to believe maybe I was looking at the wrong thing.21:49
Shadow__X1on hdparm -I what dma did it support21:49
Shadow__X1hmm well it could be how the drive is setup in bios21:49
frozenskunk1Don't believe I have a bios issue, I have used this box for a few years, and it just seems to be 8.10 that has this (slow) issue21:50
Shadow__X1hmm well again do hdparm -I and see what dma it says it supports21:50
Shadow__X1and did it say dma was on21:51
frozenskunk1just did, that gives DMA: mdma0 mdma 1 mdma 2 udma0 udma1 udma 2 udma3 udma4 *udma521:51
frozenskunk1I believe that the mdma and udma are different. When I used another hdparm command, it gave those as two line items (but same status, udma5 was tagged with the asterisk)21:52
Shadow__X1hmm21:54
frozenskunk1yeah, using hdparm -i lists mdma as DMA modes, and udma as UDMA modse21:54
frozenskunk1again, with udma5 marked as active21:54
Shadow__X1udo hdparm /dev/hdc21:54
Shadow__X1sudo hdparm /dev/hdc21:54
Shadow__X1hmm dma5 should be faster than what your getting afaik21:55
frozenskunk1is there a difference between DMA and UDMA?21:55
Shadow__X1uh i dont really know honestly21:55
Shadow__X1or atleast i dont remember21:56
frozenskunk1sudo hdparm /dev/hdc returns no such file or directory. Do I maybe need a disc in that drive?21:56
Shadow__X1no you want to replace hdc with your hd22:01
frozenskunk1ok, a little more research and I found this (http://www.spcug.org/reviews/bl0108.htm) that indicates UDMA is UltraDMA, which Western Dig refers to as ATA/100, so I think that UDMA is probably appropriate, and appears to be enabled already...22:01
frozenskunk1Any other ideas as to what might cause such slow rates?22:09
frozenskunk1maybe this... https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/216878 or this https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/28559522:32
frozenskunk1Shadow__X1 - Thanks for your help! At least it looks like my config is correct, and it may be a bug issue. I will see what else I can figure out. Thanks again!22:33
