christian_Hi...what will be the difference in the new notification system as 8.10?00:30
christian_I tried to install the prerelease but it didnt even boot00:32
christian_:\00:32
charlie-tcaI don't think will see a big difference from the users view. Most of it is behind the scenes.00:34
christian_hm...i heared there was some rumour because of this and many users wanted the old one back...00:34
Kangarooocharlie-tca: hey to test i need to install daily image?00:36
charlie-tcayes, either on hardware or in a virtual machine00:37
Kangarooocouse i have already daily image from 10 april .. i installed that one and working on it now..00:37
christian_im very new to the ubuntu thing so im stupid...is there a way to completly encrypt the aprtitions?00:37
charlie-tcaYou need to test today's images. Too much has changed since 10 april.00:37
Kangaroooou.. :( i dont want reinstall..00:37
charlie-tca!daily00:37
ubottuDaily builds of the CD images of the current development version of Ubuntu are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/00:37
charlie-tcachristian_: yes, you can do an encrypted installation, using the entire disk00:38
christian_is it point and click or shell-wizard magic?00:38
zoredachechristian_: it is pretty easy to setup00:39
charlie-tcaIt is using the alternate installation cd, so it is command line, but there are nice graphics to help you00:39
zoredacheyou just need to choose the correct item off a menu and let it do its work for you...  If you want a complex configuration things can get difficult00:40
christian_ah00:40
Kangarooook 3h to download00:40
Kangaroooill learn to backup fast data :)00:40
christian_when i install the current prerelease does it upgrade itself when the final version gets out?00:41
Kangaroooouh and can i use ext4 on partial drive? 1st is wind..00:41
charlie-tcayes, christian_00:41
christian_:D00:41
zoredachehaving good backups is strongly reccomended... if you loose your passphrase you are sol...00:41
Kangaroooimean partition?00:41
charlie-tcaYou just run the updates00:41
charlie-tcaI don't think I would use ext4, Kangarooo00:41
christian_what would be the preferred filesystem for encryption?00:41
charlie-tcaIt does still have some issues.00:41
Kangarooopassphrases? what pass[rases?00:42
charlie-tcachristian_: ext3 also00:42
charlie-tcaKangarooo: the passphrases are for encrypted drives.00:42
Kangaroooi have ext4 on ubuntu 9.04 old computer and pretty good.. but other laptop is with needed files so if ext4 can make BIGbadBoom hen i wont :)00:43
christian_so everything gets encrypted besides /boot, right?00:43
zoredachechristian_: yes00:43
christian_nice00:43
zoredachechristian_: unless you make things different on purpose00:44
Kangarooomaybe u can tell whats best backup way? or programm?00:44
christian_so prepare for new world order on my machine ;)00:44
christian_at least a little less paranoia00:44
Kangaroooand will it also save all programms? or names of installed programms from synaptic? so with one click i cann install all them again?00:45
zoredacheit seems like they would simply install a hardware based keylogger, and wait for you to reboot...00:45
christian_is there also a daily build for [X]ubuntu?00:45
Kangarooohttp://cdimages.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/00:45
christian_cool...00:46
charlie-tca!daily00:46
ubottuDaily builds of the CD images of the current development version of Ubuntu are available at http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily/current/ and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/00:46
christian_oh...a nice bit to play...00:46
charlie-tcayou need the /dail/ if you are going to encrypt00:46
Kangarooowith wat to backup my xubuntu files and folders? and programms?00:46
charlie-tca /daily/00:46
charlie-tcaKangarooo: I have recommended back up solutions.00:47
charlie-tcaI have *no*00:47
christian_some of you said i need the alternate install but there is only the desktop version :\00:47
zoredacheshouldn't that be http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily/current/ and http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/xubuntu/daily-live/current/00:47
zoredacheubottu: you need to learn how to be more context sensitive... when you are in #xubuntu you should talk about ubuntu00:48
ubottuError: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)00:48
zoredacheerr, xubuntu rather00:48
christian_hehe00:48
christian_is there also a hardened kernel in ubuntu-land....like the one in gentoo perhaps?00:49
charlie-tcacrap, yes00:49
zoredacheKangarooo: I like rsync, dirvish, partimage, dd, or tar depending on the specific needs of the backup00:49
charlie-tcaIt used to, too00:49
Kangaroooi dont wanna mees with firefox and pidgin files.. and i want all programms to be in place..00:49
christian_do you mean me, charlie?00:50
charlie-tcayes, christian_ . Please use the xubuntu daily image00:51
Kangarooozoredache: whitch saves all destop and music folders? and also saves all programms? or saves names of programms and on getting it back it installs them back?00:52
christian_oki....thank you for your kind help00:52
charlie-tcaKangarooo: might be a bad idea, you may wind up reinstalling all your programs if you reinstall00:52
christian_uh...one question left...is there even a smaller desktop system of ubuntu?00:53
zoredachechristian_: you could try and use flux, or lxde00:53
Kangaroooim downloading daily Desktop.. its ok? or for tests is needed alternate?00:53
charlie-tcachristian_: I think xubuntu is the smallest one out, with a GUI. There is the server image, which doesn't have a GUI.00:54
charlie-tcaTests are needed for both, Kangarooo00:54
Kangarooook :)00:54
christian_i know...but im searching for a slick desktop version00:54
zoredacheKangarooo: to get a backup of what packages you have install with apt you can use 'sudo dpkg --get-selections > package_selections'00:54
christian_so far xubuntu is fine for me, but who knows better...00:54
Kangaroooouh so if i havent installed with synaptic then i wont see? so i wont get backup for packeges with .debdownloads and command line installs?00:57
zoredacheKangarooo: anyway it sounds like you need to make a backup of /etc, /home, and /var/lib/dpkg.  What device/media do you have available to backup too?00:57
zoredacheKangarooo: yes, that will get synaptic add/remove programs stuff as well...00:57
Kangaroooi have another partition - window.. but safer would be to other pc witch has ubuntu 9.0400:57
n2diywhat's the trick to playing dvds? I've installed the VLC player, installed libdvdread, and ran the script, but still no joy?00:58
Kangarooozoredache: and will i also get with that command stuff installed with .deb and with command line?00:59
zoredacheKangarooo: it should... you could run the command to get the selections and look... Just open the file in a text editor00:59
Kangaroooi mean will that command show stuff with has been intalled with command line00:59
zoredacheKangarooo: the best way to know is simply to try it and check01:00
Kangaroooi did that command but it didnt do anything01:00
Kangarooosudo dpkg --get-selections > package_selections01:01
zoredacheit created a file named package_selections01:02
zoredacheopen it01:02
christian_do you know the name of the hardened kernel? I dont find infos...01:04
Kangaroooah in /usrname folder :) yes there are many and even witch i haven intalled but are needed.. i some easy way to get only what ive been checking in add remove and  sysanptic?01:05
zoredacheKangarooo: I that information may exist, but I am not sure how to get too it easily01:08
Kangaroooyes it shows all witch has been installed from apt-get and syanptic and add remove and .deb files but that files contains too much info.. i would like 4 example only thouse who ive installet - so without dependent pacakges.. and best way would be with dates?.. full calendar type info01:08
Kangarooook so sadly this is little too much time taking file when ill try to find witch i have installed and witch i need..01:09
Kangaroooaah maybe i just can pop that file in system? to read and install.. ?01:09
charlie-tcaShould be the same kernel01:09
christian_uh...i found it: sudo aptitude install selinux ....there we go01:09
charlie-tcaI never have installed selinus, myself.01:10
zoredachewell if you simply open that file you should be able to pretty easily remove all the stuff you don't recognize01:10
christian_but i dont know, if this is 'just' the nsa patches....even dont know if i should trust nsa :\01:10
zoredachechristian_: the sourse is available... if you are paranoid you can look through the source, and you can even rebuild the packages from scratch01:11
christian_or i should go to the doctor ...with my paranoia01:11
christian_well i hope the crowd is better than mine....so i give it a try in a feew minutes01:13
christian_then i need tor-router...01:14
christian_vpn because of my wep-encrypted-wlan...01:17
christian_what else do i need to be as secure as possible?01:17
zoredacheyou need a faraday cage01:18
christian_ah...yes...because of mind-reading issues, right?01:18
christian_hehe01:19
zoredachebest to have one that is for your entire computer room, a second around your computer, and a third around your head....  It is the only way to be sure01:19
christian_lol01:19
christian_and then they got me because of a key logger01:20
zoredachewell see that is the trick.  You have to basically soldier all your peripherals like your keyboard and mouse directly to the motherboard...   That way they can't quickly just insert a device inline01:21
christian_then im accused by Paris Hilton because I downloaded and watched her naked poppin...01:21
zoredacheof course they might just choose to torture you01:21
christian_I already have an orange dress for that purposes01:22
christian_whats with that trusted computing platform?01:23
christian_the peripherals there are not secured as far as i know01:23
christian_should be an additional chip i heared01:24
christian_ok its ot01:25
christian_uh...download finished...bye01:25

thismamacooks2003D was working great. But suddenly games run less that 1 fps. but, glxgears runs at 205+ fps. I have an Intel card.02:55
J_Litewskihow do i change permissions of a folder?03:34
thismamacooks200J_Litewski: the chmod command03:35

J_Litewskii found a file on a svn server and i can't connect to it03:41
J_Litewskithismamacooks200, are you any good with svn commands?03:43
thismamacooks200I know it stands for subversion, that's about it. I am totally dependant on someone making a tar.gz package of sourcecode for me03:44
J_Litewskiah lol03:45
J_Litewskii'm trying to get a injection speed patch for my wireless dongle03:45
J_Litewskiand i found it on the DD-WRT svn03:46
J_Litewskiand i can't connect to it03:46
J_Litewskiand it's kinda bumming me out03:46
J_LitewskiHow do I apply patches?04:01
zoredacheJ_Litewski: get the source for the software that you are patch, then use the 'patch' command to apply the patch.  The exact details depend on the patch04:40
zoredacheit usually something like doing patch -p1 < filename.patch while in the root directory of the package04:41
PudgeyPimpHello all!04:51
PudgeyPimpI have an odd Xubuntu Issue04:51
PudgeyPimpI'm running Xubuntu 8.10 , on P3 700 MHZ, 256 MB ram IBM T20 laptop04:52
PudgeyPimpWhenever I run synaptics package manager to update my system it will run for a few mintues fine and then the whole system freezes completely.04:52
PudgeyPimpThe same will happen when I use the command prompt to update instead.04:53
PudgeyPimpWhich made me think maybe It's an issue with the Swap, so I changed the swappiness to 10 and it will run and update and not freeze.04:53
PudgeyPimpBut instead of freezing after a few minutes, my ethernet connection will die which doesn't work until I unplug it and log out of my session and then plug it back in.04:54
PudgeyPimpThe ethernet is a Netgear USB Ethernet adapter thing.04:54
PudgeyPimpWhat's the deal?04:54
PudgeyPimpI'm thinking it's either a driver issue for a piece of hardware for my laptop, or it's possesed by the devil... But it's definately one of the two I'm thinkin'04:56
PudgeyPimpplease calm down people, I can only adress one person at a time.05:00
PudgeyPimpAddress**05:00
* zoredache shrugs (I only use apt-get from the cli)05:09
MoodPudgeyPimp: try a wired line connection to take usb stick out of the equation05:11
PudgeyPimpI would, but the ethernet port is broken05:20
PudgeyPimpSo i'm forced to use this horrible USB adapter until I decide this laptop is worth spending anything on and getting a wireless pcmcia card05:20
PudgeyPimpZoredache - even if i use apt-get from terminal it will give issues05:21
zoredachereally?05:21
PudgeyPimpYes, It's got me very puzzled05:21
PudgeyPimpI can get updates to work for literally a few moments and then hard freeze which ctrl-alt-F4, Backspace, etc. won't get me out of.05:22
PudgeyPimpI'm blowing out the install right now, and trying over but I'm 94.6% it's still going to be an issue05:23
PudgeyPimpIt did this with ubuntu so I thought maybe I need to use xubuntu instead to use less memory... guess what, still same issue.05:23
PudgeyPimpI've cried over this once already I'm ashamed to say...05:24
PudgeyPimp(joke..)05:24
n2diyxubuntu comes with firefox, is there another browser I could use, with an integrated mail app, other than evolution? Or, should I just install Thunderbird?05:29
zoredachethunderbird is installed by default usually..05:31
zoredachethere are several other browsers and email clients you can install05:31
n2diyzoredache: ok, hadn't checked yet, so firefox/thunderbird is as light weight as I can hope to get?05:32
zoredacheno, you didn't ask for lightweight...   for light weight...  firefox is not light....  But it is going to support the web the best05:33
zoredacheI generally only use webmail so I don't have much to reccomend when it comes to email clients...05:37
n2diyzoredache: ok, tnx. I think opera might play with email, have to go check.05:39

DiecastMessiahjust the x- desktop and yeah its up to you13:32
DiecastMessiahX is faster but a little harder to use..13:32
DiecastMessiahin terms of menus and things.. you have to do thing more manually13:32

Ruadh_Hi all15:18
nineteenfingersmy apologies for posting OT, but this is a big deal and needs the attention of anyone who uses the internet in Europe - see details here http://www.britishblades.com/forums/showthread.php?t=79002 and contact your MEP as a matter of urgency NOW - it'll be too late tonight. Spread the word to as many people as you can please.15:27
cody-somervilleoh wow15:35
cody-somervillethats scary :(15:35
nineteenfingerscody-somerville - just a bit eh? hence me risking a Kline by posting it OT in 4 channels - i hate spam generally - but when you consider it could make the difference between being able to access these very IRC channels or not it's a biggie15:38
SiDinineteenfingers: aware of that15:53
SiDithe problem is that this **** kinda comes from the deputees of my so democratic country15:53
nineteenfingersSiDi - know the feeling - my lot are pushing pretty hard for this kind of thing too15:54
SiDiwell, ive been following the debates at the french AN about the "anti-piracy" law15:56
SiDiits really awful15:56
SiDithey dont understand what they do, but they're about to leave an organisation that is not regulated by judiciary authorities choose how networks should be watch, which kind of networks should be watch15:57
SiDiand who will condemn persons on the basis of accusations coming from private companies15:57
SiDiand no proof is needed. you'll have to *buy* a government spyware in order to proof you're innocent.15:58
ablomen(and it wont run on linux)16:01
SiDi(and no linux/unix user would ever accept this to run on their pc, actually)16:01
SiDi(i'm doing politics, we've got enough with the cops harrassing/aggressing us, the media (that almost all belong to the main party) and government's diffamation and propaganda, we dont need to also have generalised spywares all over the country. this has nothing to do with piracy, they're after us, as usual)16:02
Slonkieheh16:03
ablomenimho, its mostly just the lack of knowledge people in power have over anything internet related16:04
* ablomen points to the whole pirate bay judging, which is just plain wrong, not because my opinion about filesharing, but about the fact that torrents contain no copyrighted material16:06
ablomenand the same lack of knowledge is the main reason of 90% of the debates in dutch parlement about internet related stuff, including censorship etc16:06
SiDiyeh16:08
SiDithey condemned them for doing something legal (even if not legitimate or honnest)16:08
=== BooVeMan_work is now known as BooVeMan

SlonkieI'm experiencing quite an slow start up with xubuntu 9.04 atm. it's the part where it's loading the panels that's slow16:38
SlonkieIs there anything to do to fasten this up a lil' ?16:38
charlie-tcaSlonkie: are you up to date?16:38
Slonkieyes16:38
SlonkieJust checked for new updates, there's none16:39
charlie-tcaSlonkie: should be fixed shortly after the release, maybe16:40
Slonkieall right cool16:40
charlie-tcaWe will be upgrading xfce to 4.6.1, that should fix it16:41
SuperJediWombatWhats the easiest way to access a samba share from my xubuntu 9.04 laptop?16:42
charlie-tcause gigolo16:42
SuperJediWombatThanks, looking into it now.16:43
BooVeMan_workmount -t cifs -o "username=,password="  //serverip/share /mnt16:43
rglcharlie-tca, are you an xubuntu contributor?16:44
charlie-tcaSuperJediWombat: I think it is Applications -> System -> Remote filesystems16:44
charlie-tcargl: yes16:44
SuperJediWombatBooVeMan_work: thats what I have been using previously, I was hoping for something easier.16:45
BooVeMan_workSuperJediWombat: to me thats fairly easy :-D16:46
SuperJediWombatOn my main PC i just have it in fstab, but on the laptop it causes slowdowns on startup because the wifi isn't enabled.16:46
SuperJediWombatBy easy I mean fast.16:47
rglcharlie-tca, nice :)16:47
SuperJediWombatAs in, click a button on the pannel and have it mount.16:47
rglcharlie-tca, xfce 4.6.1 will make it to xubuntu 9.0416:47
charlie-tcaIt will not make the release date, but will be an upgrade after the fact16:48
rglI see. its fine :)16:51
rglcharlie-tca,  Hetor said one could use http://ppa.launchpad.net/jerome-guelfucci ppa archive to try 4.6.1.  is that the recomended repo to use?16:52
charlie-tcaYes, that is16:53
rglok thanks :)16:53
SuperJediWombatWould it be possible to put a launcher on the pannel to mount my samba share, without prompting for my pass?17:06
BooVeMan_workI reckon - create a line in fstaba with reference to a creditials file17:07
BooVeMan_workSuperJediWombat: like: //192.168.0.3/Temporal /fs_temporal cifs user,iocharset=utf8,uid=1000,gid=100,auto,rw,user,credentials=/etc/fstab_smb_credentials 0 017:08
SuperJediWombatIf I have an entry in fstab, can it mount without needing sudo?17:08
BooVeMan_workyes17:09
BooVeMan_workif the mountpoint is accessible tp the user17:09
SuperJediWombatGreat. Thanks.17:09

likemindeadIf I've installed Xubuntu 9.04 Beta (which I'm loving), I don't need to do a fresh install April 23rd, do I? Updates will get me the same thing, right?21:58
zoredacheno, you might need to do a update if there are any new packages between now and then21:59
likemindeadYeah, there've been a bunch of updates every day. I make sure I install them ASAP. Thanks.21:59
ubottuIf with all the cute terminals that are around you're still using xterm, then you deserve any problem you're experiencing with it. Go away.22:00
likemindeadTilda, FTW.22:01
BooVeMan_workwhat may be the reason that my wireless device worked all right until someone recommended to uninstall & purge gdm. so now I have my device showing up and I even see the signal quality with iwlist and I can enable the device and ping myself but I cannot ping anything else.22:03

xunewbI want to be sure that xbuntu will work before i install. Im tired of the spamware and viruses22:39
FelineMonstrositMy second panel, which is on the left, keeps stopping autohiding. This is the second time this has happened, it just won't go away. I've tried going to the panel settings and switching the autohide on and off but it doesn't work. the only thing that stops it is restarting. this is really annoying, has anyone had the same problem? does anyone know how to solve this?22:39
BooVeMan_worktry the live CD22:39
xunewbIm getting it now, but I know from exp. that linux distros of all sorts do not work well out of box on a windows based pc22:40
BooVeMan_workxunewb: when did you try that - like 10 yeasrs ago?22:40
xunewbno, like a few months ago22:41
xunewbive been through puppy linux, ubuntu, ubuntu se, kubuntu and a few others. the only one so far that works out of box is backtrack 3, wich i think is funny22:41
xunewband useful22:42
xunewbseriously though, beyond the newb bashing does anyone know anything constructive about this?22:42
BooVeMan_workso what are you referring to with "not work well" - devices nor recognized? or Laptop extra buttons not working22:42
xunewball of those issues actually22:43
xunewbwith ubuntu se everything seemed good except that when i tried to initiate the drviers for my gfx card my comp wouldnt boot22:43

BooVeMan_workxunewb: that is the problem with propritary (closed source) drivers22:45
xunewbI know22:45
xunewband lots of other nasties that I also loathe22:45
BooVeMan_workIf it worked with the default dirver why did you tried to change to the nvidia driver in the first place? gamer?22:45
xunewbbecuz it wouldnt let me moved my resolution above 800xwhatever22:46
