DaskreechReformer81: Ok when lots of people are all making changes to a common area you need someway of controlling it05:03
DaskreechFor code (or documents) there is a revision system05:03
DaskreechCVS, SVN GIt etc are common ones05:03
DaskreechSince each person can make a copy and make changes it may be hard to keep a track of whats current' In A CVS system it treats each major deviation as a branch05:04
Daskreechthe mainline "branch" that is considered to be the one that everyone watches and is the one the project is based on is then called the trunk05:05
DaskreechLike a tree :) Trunk is the main thing that grows and if you need to reach out for something or make a noticeable departure then you have a branch05:06
bebegewassup ya'll.... I'm  trrying to install firefox using Konsole... when I   type su and it asks for password, I enter the password and it says Error.... what should I do?05:06
Reformer81So... what happens when two people are making changes the the same branch, but their changes aren't identical?  That's always confused me...05:07
tsimpsonbebege: use sudo, "sudo apt-get install firefox"05:07
tsimpsonor just use a package manager05:07
DaskreechReformer81: Then you get revisions.05:07

contrastit's funny how Windows is the only OS that completely strayed from the UNIX philosophy, and yet people view Linux/OSX/etc. as being "so different."12:06
davecmenta_ubuntu is the same or similar to kubuntu12:06
contrastdavecmenta_: ubuntu and kubuntu use the same underlying components, but the user interface is quite different.12:07
ActionParsnipdavecmenta_: ubuntu uses gnome and metacity by defualt, kubuntu uses kde and kwin by default12:07
Vezir<3 kde412:07
ActionParsnipdavecmenta_: then the apps may be mildly different, ubuntu uses gedit, kde uses kate12:07
davecmenta_oh12:07
contrastdavecmenta_: specifically, Ubuntu uses the GNOME desktop environment and Kubuntu uses KDE. IMO, if you've only tried one desktop environment, you're not getting the most out of Linux.12:07
ActionParsnipdavecmenta_: there is nothing stopping you installing gnome apps on a kde system but you will need to install a LOT of gtk libs to make them runable (synaptic will do this for you)12:08
contrastActionParsnip: "mildly"? Dolphin PWNS Nautilus hands down. :)12:08

padi999how come, kile is not using the TEXINPUTS variable for finding cls and sty files I put in myself?12:09
davecmenta_and there is some program like the ARES for kubuntu12:09
contrastActionParsnip: Actually, the core gtk libs are already installed in kubuntu, so as long as you pass the "--no-install-recommends" option to "sudo apt-get install <package-name>", a lot of gtk apps won't require that many libs.12:09
contrastdavecmenta_: ares?12:10
davecmenta_yes it is a P2P12:10

RabidEmuahox: I've been googling around and it looks like fglrx 9.4 dropped support for some ati cards which is causing lots of people problems17:51
ahoxRabidEmu: mine is a rather new one, Radeon HD3600 in an HP workstation with a quadcore.17:54
ahoxRabidEmu: also, it does kind of sometimes work for a minute or so...17:54
RabidEmuahox: sorry I don't really know more.  you can try here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fglrx and check the compatibility in 9.4, there's a list of supported cards17:55

draikNow I bought myself an Acer Aspire One 10.1"18:15
draikjmichaelx: CPU on the SmartStep 250N... honestly, I don't know off the top of my head.18:15
jmichaelxdraik: i was wondering about the dell smartstep - i have an old ALDI Medion laptop, that is nearly identical to some smartsteps18:15
rmrfslashjmichaelx: let me rephrase that. They've released the specs for most if not all of their boards/chips to the OS community and they're providing support to Novell on the OS driver(s). That's what I meant by being a team player. That's more than NVidia is doing.18:16
jmichaelxdraik: i bet the aspire is nice. i bought a dell mini 9 several months ago, and use it continuously18:16
jmichaelxrmrfslash: i know what you're saying, and i know what AMD is claiming, but IMO, when you add it all up, they are doing a very crappy job - that is, however, only my opinion18:17
draikjmichaelx: It is VERY nice indeed. I don't know how, but it started to move up the scale for me and I now use it for just about everything. I have used it more than my laptop and desktop combined in the past 3 weeks.18:17

zoiss*porting22:12
zoissavihayb: i you wouldnt mind ...a short dialog would be appreciated very much22:12
zoiss*if22:12
avihaybnot realy, KDE is first and formost, a window manager... ok, I'll start from the top22:12
avihaybIn linux, there is the kernel, it talks to the hardware, it dose lot's of things, the windows counterpart is the windows kernel. you don't get to talk to it much by yourself, on both OSs22:14
zoissyes22:15
zoissthe basic os22:15
darkenergyin linux you can look in /proc. windows has no view into the kernel, ironically.22:16
avihaybonce the kernel is up and runing, it runs a few shells. ubuntu used to run BASH, now it's runing something lighter22:16
avihaybit also runs x-windows (xorg or xfree86)22:17
bigjockeris it me or ubuntu servers are slow as hell when updating?22:17
avihaybthat gives you the functunality you get in windows when the explorer.exe is not runing22:18
zoissfor me servers were ok22:18
avihayb*process22:18
zoissx-windows is for the graphical interface22:18
zoiss?22:18
avihaybyes22:18
zoissand other hidden shells are for driver management and stuff?22:19
avihaybthat is, it draws a background for you, and if there are open windows, it shows them to you22:19
avihaybno, you can do whatever you like with them22:20
zoissstrg+alt+f1:]22:20
zoissso KDE or GNOME is jsut a set of tools on base of the kernel22:21
avihaybon top of x-windows, you like to run a window manager, like KDE, or Gnome, or XFCE, it's more ore less the equivelent of explorer.exe22:22
zoissok22:22
=== bazhang_ is now known as bazhang

zoissyes sir22:25
eraserhead_hi, which program do you use to MSN videoconference? thanks22:25
avihaybactualy, kde, and gnome, also give your programs some support libraries to work with. that's why kde oriented apps have theyre special look and feel while gnome apps have theyre own22:25
zoissok22:26
zoissbut KDE4 is not compatible with KDE3 tools?22:27
PhilRoderaserhead_: kopete has support for it I think22:27
DragnslcrYeah, distributions basically just take everything (Linux kernel, KDE, Gnome, bunch of other software like Apache) and put it together into an easy-to-use CD22:27
DragnslcrKDE3 programs will work fine in KDE422:27

avihaybkde4 is built from the ground up with out a relation to kde3 (there is a better expression to say this, but it eludes me) in order to let you run kde3 programs, kde4 needs the kde3 support libraries22:29

DragnslcrI think the DVD just has more packages23:06
theuser1denyhosts is good too?23:06
DragnslcrIf you use the CD, you can install everything that's on the DVD, it'll just have to fetch the packages over the Internet instead of using the disc23:06
