ogranubae1, i dont like kiwi because it completely breaks the concept of ltsp5 to integrate deeply with the distro and through that improve the upstream packages, because it reimplements ltsp4 on a different level and because it prevents any kind of upstream contribution through suse users ...08:58
ogranubae1, it has *noting at all* to do with paths but with selfish attitude and breaking of concepts08:59
ogranubae1, its great that it exists for the users wanting it but its a 100% fork08:59
alkisgogra, if I made something similar with ubuntu, i.e. a live ubuntu dvd with ltsp preinstalled and ready to function, and with some edu* packages installed, would I be able to redistribute it without having to call it with a name other than "ubuntu"?09:02
highvoltageogra: someone was arguing yesterday that it isn't a fork, but I agree with you that it's clearly a fork.09:30
ograwell, i dont mind the fork that much, but the rest09:31
ogragood blog post btw :)09:32
tsurcgood morning all :)09:32
highvoltagethanks ogra, I didn't know how you'd react to it (or anyone else for that matter)09:35
highvoltagebut I just needed to say something about it at least09:35
tsurcdoes anyone know the reasons for having defining a terminal in the /etc/hosts file? I'm having a problem where if our internal dns server is down we get a grey screen09:47
ograltsp5 doesnt use DNS at all, ltsp4 where you actually needed that for the highly insecure XDMCP connection it uses was never supported in ubuntu10:04
tsurcah sorry I should have been clearer, I'm on a box with ltsp 4.2 on, my question was less about fixing the problem (as I soon fixed it by updating the /etc/hosts file and restoring internal dns) but more about understanding why this would happen10:10
tsurcI guess I'm on the wrong channel... #ltsp?10:11
ograwell, even in #ltsp its a matter of luck to get ltsp4 support, ltsp4 is dead since 4 years10:12
ograthe last security fixes were in 2005 ... running ltsp4 anywhere is just adding a big security hole to your system10:13
tsurclike I said I was more about curiosity and better understanding that support :)10:14
tsurcmaybe its one of those things that I needn't concern myself with10:15
ograXDMCP looks up the hostname and IP on connect10:15
ograif it cant find either it cant start10:16
ograwell, it can start but not connect to any remote display manager10:16
ograso what you see is the local start of the X server ...10:16
tsurcah right, so if a client is not in /etc/hosts... and not in DNS (read they weren't in dns anyway, but I guess the xdmcp server was expecting "some" response as opposed to "no" response) then the xdmcp server will not allow the connect10:18
ograright10:18
tsurcand the difference in the way ltsp5 does it?10:18
ograit uses ssh10:19
ogranot XDMCP10:19
tsurcso you tunnel the users x server session to the client machines x server10:20
ograright, which means for example you dont need to have X running on the server10:21
ograand you cant run a tcpdump from anywhere in your network and produce screenshots of password captures from it like with XDMCP10:21
tsurcah cool :)10:22
tsurcbut you have the overhead of everything running through ssh... small price to pay though I guess :)10:23
ograyou can switch encryption off for the actual X traffic with LDM_DIRECTX=True in lts.conf10:24
tsurcyeah I read that one somewhere10:24
tsurcand this makes ldm revert to xdmcp?10:24
ograthat will only keep the password and feature communication (ltspfs etc) in ssh, but your payload X traffic will be redirected through a plain DISPLAY forwarding10:25
tsurcnice :)10:25
ograso at least the password handshake is more secure than XDMCP ... i wouldnt advise my users to do any onlinebanking in that ode though ;)10:25
tsurcyour all very very clever people.... I really wouldnt know where to start, lol10:25
ogra*mode10:26
tsurcthank for your help :)10:32
alkisgogra: if I took the ubuntu desktop cd, and installed a lot of educational apps into it (from the ubuntu repositories), and installed ltsp-server and build an ltsp chroot, and used dnsmasq instead of dhcpd3-server to be able to function as a live-ltsp-server with a dynamic IP, and produced a live dvd with all that, would I be permitted to redistribute the .iso and still call it Ubuntu? Or is what I'm thinking yet another distro?13:07
ograubuntu-edu-ltsp-remix ? :)13:07
alkisgYeah, sure :)13:08
alkisgI can find hosting, and I think it'll be useful, but I don't want to get into trouble with the naming thing...13:08
ograhttp://www.canonical.com/projects/ubuntu/unr -> see the "what is a remix" section13:08
alkisgAhhh ok looking...13:08
alkisgYup, ogra, I think you're the goddad (if that's what it's called) of my remix :) "ubuntu-edu-ltsp-remix" it is!13:11
ogra:)13:11
alkisgI think doing a remix isn't too hard, is it?13:11
ograwell, depends how you do it :)13:12
alkisgHmmm any links for a how-to or something?13:12
ograjust changing the iso is quite easy13:12
ogralook for LiveCDCustomization on the wiki13:13
alkisgThanks ogra! I think I just found out what to do in the summer vacations... :P13:13
ograhttps://wiki.ubuntu.com/MobileTeam/Mobile/HowTo/ImageModification has some hints about how to edit a squashfs13:13
ogra(note this doesnt use an iso, you need the mkisofs magic from the wiki howto for isos)13:15
* alkisg is reading https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomization ...13:15
