R1cocheti think so00:02
R1cochetlook into this: mediainfo-gui_0.7.14-100:02
pteagueah, there we go... `file` was what i was looking for... geeze, is that easy or what? <.<  time to go find my duh hat00:07
pteaguealthough that wasn't the news i was hoping for...  mpeg adts, layer 2, v1...00:09
R1cochetany1 use panda av for linux?00:51
SiDino00:56
SiDiwe use mice, here00:56
knomeR1cochet, maybe check the forums or #ubuntu as it's so quiet here.00:57
lukinforehm, is there .desktop file for mplayer somewhere in repos?01:11
lukinforeI mean mplayer, not _g_mplayer01:11
sober_hi everyone01:16
sober_running xubuntu 9.04 here and having a problem it seems that my resolution setting is not being saved after a restart01:17
sober_any help would be appreciated01:17
R1cochetis there a different program i can use to enable multiple desktops beside using nvidias X server settings manager?01:52

CuriosTigerHi all. Xubuntu lets me set my resolution to 1920x1200 just fine, but when I log out it reverts to 800x600 -- both in gde and when I log back into my xfce session. Any idea how I can remedy this?03:16
CuriosTigerThis is on a fresh install of Xubuntu 9.04, but it's running in a vmware virtual machine if that matters.03:17
kebCuriosTiger did you try saving the session ?03:29
kebApplications, Settings, Session and Startup, Session03:29
CuriosTigerkeb: Yes. No effect.03:34
CuriosTiger:(03:34
kebso when you go to Settings, Display   it gives you the 1920x1200 option but it is not the default?03:36
CuriosTigerkeb: Yeah03:40
kebwhat do you see in ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/displays.xml03:44
CuriosTigerone sec03:49
CuriosTiger1920x120003:50
CuriosTigerwhich should be correct03:51
CuriosTigerwtf :(03:51
CuriosTigerlet me try logging out and back in and see if that changes03:51
kebis that your current resolution or the defailt03:51
kebyeah go for it03:51
CuriosTigerthat's Default03:52
CuriosTigerhrm03:52
CuriosTigerthe screen does not attempt to change resolutions when I log in, only when I log out03:52
CuriosTigerso it seems like it's ignoring XFCE's config and inheriting the resolution from gdm03:52
kebdid you see this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=46312104:00
CuriosTigernope. looks04:02
kebalso, did you try ctrl-alt-+ or ctrl-alt-- (on keypad)04:04
CuriosTigeryeah, that just makes the screen flash, but no resolution change04:04
kebCuriosTiger do you have 9.04 ?04:05
kebCuriosTiger this doesnt look hopeful :( http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=113923604:08
kebCuriosTiger possibly related  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/36860204:10
Josep23912hi, I'bve been having some issues with sound in xubuntu 9.04, i had installed ubuntu from the dvd (without a desktop environment in vmware) and for some reason when i load xfce4-mixer it thinks i dont have some gstreamer packages installled even though they are04:11
Josep23912i got sound working properly when i did a ubuntu-desktop install (on another vmware image)04:11
Josep23912maybe its because i chose the linux-image-virtual kernel this time?04:11
Josep23912vmware tools is installed btw04:11
Josep23912i can't seem to see any /dev/dsp04:13
Josep23912device04:13
viddis there any way to get the volume applet fo=rom feisty back?04:38
viddthis mixer applet has no slider bar04:38
CuriosTigerkeb: Yes, this is 9.0404:45
kebCuriosTiger as far as i can tell it is a bug and you could report your symptoms and hardware next to the other reports in those links04:47
meatcarvidd, scroll wheel on the volume app.04:47
CuriosTigerkeb: Yeah, I might do that tomorrow04:47
CuriosTigertonight, I'm too tired to go read their bug reporting guidelines :P04:47
kebhehe04:47
viddmeatcar, no dice....the wheel wont get the volume above 90% =\04:48
meatcartry to dl the tar for the volume app from intrepid. then compile it.... :S04:51
meatcaryoure lucky that intrepid is still supported. just get the .deb actually. should work...04:51
viddlooking for it now....'04:52
keblol i was still getting updates for gutsy til yesterday04:52
viddheh....breezey was still in the archives last time i looked (well over a year ago)04:53
meatcarkernel support, etc....04:54
vidddont understand why they would wipe out BASIC functionality!04:55
meatcarheh. i'm pretty dissapointed with the xfce crew for this release. The menu editor is gone, this is. I think they took a wrong turn when you stopped being able to make launchers easily configured menus.04:56
viddim seriously considering releasing "vidd-ubunu"!04:57
meatcarheh04:57
vidd=]04:57
meatcarvidd window manager? please...04:57
meatcarlol04:57
viddno...just the "vidd" mnager =\04:58
viddi like the lxde built on slim personally04:58
viddfor my relics04:59
viddthe problem with that is, withthis install recommends forced down one's throat, lxde pulls in gdm...and with that, half the rest of ubuntus bloat05:00
kebvidd did you try Applications -> Multimedia -> Mixer05:00
arktvrvsis xv not in 8.10?05:00
arktvrvsthe screenshot program05:00
viddarktvrvs, should be....its a panel app05:01
viddat least, there is a very lite panel app for screenshots'05:01
arktvrvsyea i see that now05:01
arktvrvsim just so used to xv being on every distro of every;thing ive used :P thanks tho, i got it now05:02
viddkeb, that path is the same thing i get when i click on the icon05:02
viddarktvrvs, np...happy to help =]05:02
kebvidd that app has a Select Controls button where you can add sliders05:02
meatcaris it possible to chose which folder is used ofr desktop in XFCE?05:02
viddkeb, adding the sliders dont make them work correctly =\05:03
viddmeatcar, what do you mean?05:03
kebvidd they work for me.  did you select the right device driver?05:03
viddDesktop is always the folder for your desktop....no matter what window manager you use05:04
viddkeb, the scroll thing (sorta) works....just wont go higher then 90%05:04
kebvidd you can also install aumix which is a curses based mixer05:05
viddkeb, aumix is already installed (i assume by default...but its hard to say what post-install app may have drug it in)05:06
meatcarvidd, in gnome i can choose to use the home folder as my desktop. or a folder of my choice. that eliminates the need to have an extra folder, etc.05:06
viddits terminal-based05:06
kebyeah05:07
viddkeb, that does not help my issue....05:07
kebit doesnt let you push volume up to 100%?05:07
viddif im scrolling a firefox window, and the mouse slips, my sound gets messed up and i have to openan app to fix it, rather then simply raise a slider bar with my mouse....or use the volume contral keys on my keyboard05:08
viddkeb, mixer does....but the panel app does not05:09
keboic05:09
viddalso, with the old volume control app....laptop and keyboard keys auto-worked05:09
viddthat is toast now05:09
viddand the volume control app made these work all the way back in breezey05:10
viddlike i said....basic functionality....gone05:11
kebwell im not sure that xubuntu needs to work to the same schedule as ubuntu, maybe it should aim for 2 months behind to ensure stuff works05:11
viddkeb, that is preposterous05:12
kebgiven that it isnt a canonical supported distro05:12
viddthere is no reason this could not have been identified in the alotted time05:13
kebit probly could if you were one of the testers :D05:13
viddive been super-busy the last two release cycles05:14
kebme too05:14
meatcari agree with vibb here. I think that there is no reason to try and do anything revolutionary with the volume app. people just want to adjust their sound. not experience a new way of user interface.05:14
viddand they really aggitated me by cow-toing to the "cram install-recommends down the users throat" phylosophy ubuntu-proper took05:15
viddeven though they saw the annoyance debian had with it05:16
meatcaralso, its not very friendly for touch input, etc. some mice dont have the scroll feature ( old laptops ), toward which i fell xfce is geared.05:16
meatcarthats why i'm installing arch as we speak..05:16
meatcar:D05:16
meatcarjust to try.05:16
viddarch is al ittle too "get down and dirty" isnt it?05:17
vidddoes it use apt?05:17
meatcari dunno. i'll see05:17
meatcarno05:17
meatcartry mint then.05:17
meatcari dunno. considered how splintered the linux community is with distro's i doubt theres nothing u'd like.05:18
viddim thinking do a cli install, force install-recommends off, and build up from there05:18
meatcarwhats cli?05:19
viddcli = command line interface05:19
viddbasicly,just the terminal05:19
viddall my servers are very well behaved on *buntu =]05:20
meatcarso, you mean getting ubuntu  server edition, and going from there?05:21
viddnonono....05:21
vidddefinantly NOT the server edition!05:21
meatcaroh?05:21
viddany alt-install disk gives a cli-only option05:22
meatcaroh. so alt-install xubuntu?05:22
viddthe *-server kernels do weird things to my systems =\05:23
viddyes05:23
meatcarah. sorry. i never really stepped outside the circle of pre-confiured systems before. lol.05:24
geniiFor a DIY linux, there's always the educational Linux From Scratch method05:24
viddyou MIGHT be able to do a cli with the live cd...but i have not used the live cd for anything but system recovery05:24
viddgenii, DIY?05:25
viddit=s that a distro?05:25
genii"Do It Yourself" . No, it's not a distro05:26
* vidd hates this keyboard!05:26
geniividd: There is a site which guides you through making your own linux. Tedious but very educational. http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/05:27
viddgenii, ive done a "build-your-own" with *buntu's cli install as the base05:27
viddbut i will definantly check out that site05:27
viddbut TBH...im kinda outside my comfort zone with CFS05:28
vidd(CFS = Compiled From Source)05:28
genii:)05:29
viddheh...RPM's scare me =]05:29
vidd(in the army, RPM means "Rounds Per Minute!)05:30
geniiIn *buntu it generally means Retarded Package Manager. In Redhat of course the R stands for Redhat05:32
* vidd knows what the letters mean.....05:35
vidddont change the fear factor much =]05:36
zoredachevidd: from the livecd, you could manually partition, then install and use the debbootstrap package to perform an minimal install.  Network access would be required05:48
geniiThis is also a good method05:49
viddzoredache, i will keep that in mind....05:49
viddbut the 10 mb mini.iso is my usual install method05:50
zoredacheyeah, mine too05:50
viddit sets up networking and the installer....05:50
viddthen gets everything else from the net05:51
viddoh...and i put it on a usb stick05:51
viddnite all05:58
solotimhi, evince users, anyone can tell me how to search the full pages of a pdf document? it seems that evince can only search words in certain part of a full doc07:48

Moodhow do i unmount a floppy disk? i'm trying to, but it just never finishes10:32
Moodi even took the floppy disk out, but the floppy drive still shows some files10:32
Moodis there a way of forcing unmount of the floppy disk? i think it's mounted in /dev/fd010:33
Moodps aux|grep /dev/sd0 shows "hald-addon-storage: no polling on /dev/fd0 because it is explicitly disabled"10:33
zoredache_Mood: just unmount it at wait... keep in mind that floppies don't immediatly flush what you have written10:35
zoredache_so when you unmount it must finish writing anything you changed first... if you try to force the umount you'll lose stuff10:35
=== zoredache_ is now known as zoredache
Moodlose stuff on my floppy? or lose stuff somewhere else? *panic*10:36
zoredacheon the floppy10:36
Moodoh, i don't care about the contents of the floppy... plus, i'm waiting in excess of 3 mins... isn't that long?10:36
Moodcan i do a umount -f /dev/sd0? i don't want to remove that directory forever though, just the data that's mounted on there10:37
zoredacheif you took the disk out while there where still pending changes, your system may be unhappy... you may need to reboot10:37
Moodhmm... i stuck the disk back in... and now it's been about 5+ mins, no change to the "unmounting device/the device "floppy drive' is being unmounted by the system..."10:38
Moodi'm tempted to try umount -f /dev/sd0... i'm a little bit paranoid though...10:40
Moodall right... here goes nothing....10:42

Josep23912and sound appears to work, be outputted. but it's horribly choppy11:20
Josep23912and you can't hear anything11:20
Josep23912anyone got any clue what i can do?, vlc says 'broke pipe' errors.11:20
Josep23912but it happens in everythng else, like totem etc.11:20
SiDihuh11:23
SiDiHonnestly, ask vmware guy's opinion about it11:24
SiDimy vbox machines just work fine :P11:24
Josep23912yeah well it should work just fine, it does with ubuntu :S11:25
Josep23912SiDi: i reinstalled it btw, this time i have a different issue11:25
Josep23912i must not have had something installed, because i was missing a /dev/dsp device. now i've got one11:25
SiDiUbuntu got Pulseaudio11:25
SiDiIt could be a vanilla alsa + vmware problem11:25
Josep23912and it appears to output choppy audio, im suprised, because ubuntu (with gnome) worked fine11:25
Josep23912hmm11:25
SiDitry to install and launch pulseaudio ? :P11:27
Josep23912yer its not installed ;)11:27
Josep23912i think this might work11:28
Josep23912from memory gnome comes with pulse audio11:28

Lusulehi there :) any tips on where I can start to try and get opengl working with my intel on-board graphics card?11:44
SiDiHiya11:48
SiDiIf you're using 9.04, it'll be hard : some cards still dont have drivers :o11:48
LusuleSiDi: i am, though i didn't manage to figure it out on 8.10 either11:48
SiDiAw11:49
SiDiWell, try #ubuntu anyways, they'll have more people to answer. I only use nvidia cards here :/11:49
Lusulei'm used to dealing with nvidia cards, which are easy ><11:49
LusuleSiDi: thanks, i'm trying ubuntu but i don't think i'm being heard above the spam ><11:49
SiDiIntel cards are meant to work out of the box :P11:49
LusuleSiDi: it works fine, so long as I don't want anything fancy like compiz or games11:50
SiDiIs it an _old_ card ?11:50
Lusuleno11:50
SiDicause only X3100/X4500/better cards can support compiz, afair11:50
Lusuleremind me how i see which one it is?11:50
SiDilspci | grep -i vga11:51

Lusule:(11:52
SiDi(if my memory doesnt betray me)11:52

Lusulebut it wasn't bought for gaming11:53
SiDiWell, you should always pick at least an X310011:54
Lusulei didn't get to choose it :'(11:54
SiDior a geforce 8400/9300 if they're not expensive11:54
Lusuleguess it does the job it's supposed to11:54

SiDifirestorm: i dont think xfmedia is maintained anymore13:22

Relamwhy not fix it :D13:35
SiDiLukaszJ: 3rd acceleration ?13:35
SiDiRelam: between my 6 exams + current apps to finish/maintain + orals + project report to write, Sure :D13:35
LukaszJSiDi: Hello. Yes, I mean same funcyion compiz has.13:36
SiDiLukaszJ: There is no 3D with the compositor. It's only window transparency13:36
LukaszJSiDi: Ah, Ok..13:36
RelamSiDi :-D13:38
LukaszJSiDi: Still remember I was trying to figure out how to edit the launchers?13:39
LukaszJSiDi: I made it; it was so easy. I had "show minimized windows" on Desktop active, therefore, I couldn't find a laucher.13:40

SiDilol..13:43
Lusulehow do i restart xfce4 window manager if i accidentally crash it?13:47

SiDibut hi :P16:43
SiDiI use daily digests, sometimes it takes time to arrive :/16:44

viddwell...the jist of it is the .desktop isnt needed because the applet has the launcher in it16:45
SiDividd, i agree with you16:45
SiDibut for some users right click is not a very natural thing16:46
SiDithey tend to always look in the menus instead16:46
SiDi(i discovered it with the menu aswell ;) i used to keep breaking my /etc/network/interfaces :d)16:46
viddya...and mouse-wheeling over volume icon is very counter-intuitive =]16:47

SiDiand for me, scrolling the sound icon isnt counter intuitive at all :D16:51
viddSiDi, it would be ok if you could get the volume back up to 100%16:52
viddi have 6 machines with different sound cards and none of them can scroll up past 90%16:52
viddheh...even if its already @ 100%, you scroll up and it drops to 90%16:53

SiDiis there a bug report for that ?16:53
viddtry it...you'll like it16:53
vidd=]16:53
meatcarI wouldnt be surprised.16:53
vidddunno....16:53
SiDiomg i added some "system(notify-send hello)" in my xfce4-mixer's source and recompiled it16:54
SiDiit works, indeed T_T16:54
vidd*buntu has messed up so much basic stuff that im jumping ship16:54
meatcarwhat ship are you jumping to?16:54
meatcarArch :D16:54
SiDividd: try it in another distro before sayin that :O maybe its xfce !16:54
* vidd was introduced to http://www.linuxfromscratch.org/16:54
meatcarthen i wouldnt be the only one lost16:54
viddno...ALL *buntu's have install-recommeds enabled by default16:55
meatcargood luck.16:55
meatcarArch is not ubuntu....16:55
viddthat was strike 216:55
TorkiliuzHi! How do I go about enabling the "function-buttons" in Xubuntu?16:56
* meatcar is waiting while pacman updates the system... try it.. http://www.archlinux.org/16:56
viddTorkiliuz, what "function buttons" do you refer to?16:56
TorkiliuzThe volume-buttons, specifically mute, volume up and volume down...16:57
meatcarTorkiliuz, ask google. each set of function buttons has a different chip in it. the chance of people having your chip are pretty high.16:57
viddTorkiliuz, ah...your having that issue too....16:57
meatcarits usually a lil driver and some xorg editing.16:57
Torkiliuzhmm... ok... I have a Compaq Presario F550...16:57
viddused to be just enabling the volume applet (that has since been discontinued) made it work16:58
TorkiliuzEverything used to work, until I removed Ubuntu from my Ubuntu/Xubuntu install...16:58
viddstill havent found out the secret to fixing it16:58
TorkiliuzNo, the volume indicator is still in my sys-tray though...16:59
viddthat is the mixer app...not the volume manager app17:00
Torkiliuzyeah, I saw that now, sorry for assuming it without checking :P17:00
viddyou have to use your mouse wheel to move it up and down17:00
viddnp17:00
SiDiTorkiliuz: sec17:00
viddi thought they were the same too....till my buttons didnt work17:01
vidd(compaq presario US2220)17:01
SiDiTorkiliuz: go to Xfce params -> Keyboard -> Layout17:01
Torkiliuzalso, when I click it, it now pops up that gstreamer couldn't find my sound card? what's up with that?17:01
SiDiand try the "Compaq" keyboard dispositions17:01
SiDiaw17:02
viddheh...17:02
* vidd hasnt used gstreamer since breezey!17:02
TorkiliuzYeah, I tried that one, but it still didn't work, although that was the solution in ubuntu...17:02
viddxine has always worked better for me17:02
Torkiliuzhmm... so how do I go about installing xine then?17:03
Torkiliuzfrom Terminal please :)17:03
viddif your using the xine backend...get gxine as your media player....17:03
viddtotem is a PITA to convert17:03
Torkiliuzok :P17:03
Torkiliuzis it plain sudo apt-get install xine?17:04
SiDihttp://paste.ubuntu.com/163628/ Torkiliuz17:04
viddTorkiliuz, sudo apt-get install gxine libxine1-all-plugins17:04
SiDiThats all the gstreamer packages you may need17:04
Torkiliuzok, I'm going to try gstreamer first, then xine, since gstreamer used to work in ubuntu17:05
viddTorkiliuz, those 2 apps are all the xine-based stuff you could hope for17:05
SiDiget both :)17:05
SiDividd: he got no sound in xfce4-mixer cause he lacks some gstreamer packages17:05
Torkiliuzok, both? Will that work, won't they bug?17:05
viddSiDi, i have NO gstreamer stuff and my sound is beautiful17:06
SiDimh, you cheat17:06
viddTorkiliuz, you propably have the master channel muted (for some reason the default)17:07
viddopen the mixer, add all the controls17:07
SiDividd: its because either noone comes on the irc channel asking for help :(17:07
viddthen unmute your outputs17:07
TorkiliuzI can't open the mixer, because some gstreamer packages are missing it says...17:08
viddTorkiliuz, try this:17:09
TorkiliuzSo I copied SiDi's command into terminal, and it's now installing...17:09
viddsudo apt-get remove --purge xfce4-mixer && sudo apt-get install xfce4-mixer17:10
viddTorkiliuz, test SiDi 's fix before using mine17:10
TorkiliuzYeah, I tried it still says that it can't find any sound devices...17:10
viddthat is fine17:11
vidd!pastebin us the output of lspci17:11
ubottuError: I am only a bot, please don't think I'm intelligent :)17:11
vidd!pastebin17:11

Torkiliuzok17:11
viddSiDi, another basic function we lost in this release is the <ctrl>+<alt>+<bksp>17:12
SiDividd: install dontzap17:13
SiDithen dontzap --disable in console17:13
SiDiit was volunteer to remove it17:13
Torkiliuzhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/163632/17:13
viddeww nvida MB17:14
Torkiliuzit's only my school laptop, don't expect it to be any good; yet :P17:14
viddyou kidding???? the onboard video is sweet17:15
Torkiliuzit works, that's all I need... it was less than around $80, so I'm glad I got it that cheap...17:17
Torkiliuzwould killall xfce4-mixer help, or would I make things worse?17:19
viddyou can kill it then recall it17:19
Torkiliuzok, I'll try and see if it helps at all...17:20
Torkiliuzno, it didn't help any...17:20
viddif the mixer is working, but you can't detect any sound cards, then you probably yanked the proprietary drive out when you purged gnome17:22
viddin the menu....do you still have "Hardware drivers" under the "System" menu?17:22
Torkiliuz@vidd Yes, I do...17:23
vidduse that to see if your system can detect the nvidia sound card drivers17:23
Torkiliuzbut I have never needed to use "Hardware Drivers" for sound before, it doesn't detect my sound-card that way...17:24
TorkiliuzI tried now also, but it doesn't show up...17:25
viddi wanna say reboot....17:25
vidd=\17:25
Torkiliuzok, I'll try....17:25
Torkiliuzbye for now....17:25
TorkiliuzOk, now I've rebooted, and sound is working, but not the volume up/down or mute button on my keyboard...17:29
viddyes...the buttons wont work'17:30
Torkiliuzhmm... so there is absolutely no way of getting them to work?17:30
viddbecause that functionality has been stripped out of the xfce mixer app17:30
viddthe gnome volume app still has the function17:30
viddfind the gnome-based volume manager panel app and install it17:31
Torkiliuzok17:31
viddOH! and lemme know where you get it!17:31
Torkiliuzhehe... I'll try to find it!17:31
viddi got 6 crippled machines =\17:31
Torkiliuz=\ that's too bad!17:32
viddonly 2 of them can run ubuntu17:32
Torkiliuzwow!17:33
viddeven xubuntu is getting to heavey for some of them17:33
Torkiliuzhmm... old computers?17:33
viddyep17:33
viddall i do is chat, browse, email and watch porn...dont need massive machines17:34
vidd=]17:34
Torkiliuzhehe, no it's not necessary when that's the only thing you do :)17:35
viddive rescued these laptops and desktops from the trash17:36
Torkiliuzthat's a nice thing to do!17:36
viddthe 2 powerhouses are the ones i bought (laptop) and built (desktop)17:37
viddand they do more then as stated above17:37
Torkiliuzhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=2998469&postcount=2 could this work(just replacing "surround" with "master" or similar)?17:38
artistxevidd : you chat, browse, mail and surf porn ???17:38
=== btQuark is now known as f00
=== f00 is now known as f00fufu
viddartistxe, no...i watch porn...surfing for it is risky stuff =]17:38
* artistxe confiscates vidd's computer immediately 17:38
Torkiliuzhehe17:38
meatcarwow 6 machines for watching porn. one for every corner of the house.17:39
meatcarlol17:39
viddand 2 for the bathroom =]17:40
artistxeI really believe that porn and gaming industries detract the lesser minds from trying to tackle more importaant things in life :D17:40
frenzy42i have a wireless access point that won't connect to my wireless card, but if i use an old one, it will connect17:40
TorkiliuzI were fixing a computer for one of my friends some days ago, when I suddenly found a folder named "OperaTemp", the rest of the story is unnecessary to tell...17:40

Torkiliuzno, I was removing all sorts of junk from his computer, because his computer was running slow...17:41
viddfrenzy42, what does lspci (or lsusb) say your new wifi card is?17:41
Torkiliuzmeatcar is buying pron dress :P17:42
viddhey Torkiliuz what it by chance a M$-based machine?17:42
frenzy4206:07.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL-8139/8139C/8139C+ (rev 10)17:43
Torkiliuzvidd: Yes it was...17:43
* vidd is shocked!17:43
Torkiliuzhave you ever heard of a *buntu machine running slow?17:43
TorkiliuzXD17:43
viddfrenzy42, is your terminal screen getting filled up with error messages about the card?17:43
viddTorkiliuz, yeah...i have17:44
frenzy42no error messages17:44
vidddoes this card work on another machine?17:44
Torkiliuzvidd, I have never heard of it before!17:44
frenzy42my bad card seems to try to connect (complete with two green balls) but then fails and asks for a password17:44
frenzy42the bad card is built in17:45
Torkiliuzfrenzy42: is this perhaps the network password?17:45
viddTorkiliuz, drop your ram to 128 and you will17:45
frenzy42the password works for the good card17:45
viddno...its probably his keyring password17:45
viddnow im confused....17:46
viddthe new card...the password works?17:46
Torkiliuzahh, ok, I have only been running M$ Lose 3.11 on such low-end computers...17:46
frenzy42yes17:46
frenzy42but not with the on board card17:46
viddand can you see your network access pouint?17:47
frenzy42yes17:47
viddthen what is the issue?17:47
frenzy42well the card that works, belongs to someone else, i was just testing it after not being able to connect17:47
viddyou want the onboard card to work?17:47
frenzy42yes17:47
vidddesktop or laptop?17:48
frenzy42laptop17:48
vidddid you press the stupid "turn off the wifi card" button on the laptop?17:48
frenzy42no17:48
viddpress that now17:48
frenzy42ok17:49
vidddoes the onboard card work now?17:49
viddi hate when people with wifi issues chat on the machines with the issue!17:50
frenzy421ok it disconnected all the wireless17:50
frenzy421sorry about that, i only have one computer avaliable right now17:50
viddok...so....you press the "turn off wifi" button that controls the on-board card and you lose connection.....17:51
viddi must be missing something17:51
frenzy421there is only one button, it has a little antenna and blinks blue. when i push it everything goes down for some reason17:52
viddwell...yeah....its supposed to17:52
frenzy421ok17:52
frenzy421is there a way through the terminal i can see what's going on when i try to connect to the network with the on board card?17:53
viddbut if that blue light built into your laptop is on, and pushing the button turns it off and disconects you from the internet, then your built-in wifi is fine17:53
Torkiliuz about the fn-buttons; I think I found a solution, you need to install keytouch and keytouch editor...17:53
frenzy421so the problem is with my router?17:53
viddno17:53
viddthere is apparently no problem at all17:54
viddyou are connected17:54
frenzy421but with a card i can't keep using17:54
frenzy421the connection is not with the onboard card17:54
frenzy421when i push the button it shuts off all the wi-fi, even the card i have plugged in17:54
viddthe onboard card is controlled by the onboard button17:55
viddthe plugged in card is not controllable by the onboard button17:55
Torkiliuzmaybe he is turning of his wireless router?17:56
frenzy421i think i am17:56
Torkiliuzturning off*17:56
viddunless you deliberatly scripted a keystroke combo tied to that button17:56
frenzy421well i didn't i think xubuntu did17:56
viddwhere is the blu button?17:56
frenzy421above the keyboard17:56
viddthat is the power button17:57

frenzy421how does a wlan card get "ruined"17:59
viddyou pretty much have to step on them18:00
Torkiliuzwhat happened to mine was that it disconnected inside the computer, and scrambled around until it broke... so I sent it to repair because of my warranty...18:00

viddRelam, i wasnt awre ppc was officially supported anymore18:21
viddlast i heard, you had to use the server installer and make a ckli install, then sudo apt-get install the desktop you wanted18:22
vidd*cli-only*18:22
* vidd is off to lunch18:24
gabkdllythe option to do a command line system install is now available through alternate CDs as well, so you don't necessarily need a server CD18:43
* vidd knows nothing of ppc...except that official support was killed several releases ago18:44

yrrat209No, boot from USB is not an option on this one.  But Netboot could work.22:06
carliswhat is netboot ?22:06
viddcarlis, not for you22:07
yrrat209It doesn't have a native NIC, but does have a PCMCIA NIC that could be installed.22:07
carlisI want to learn it22:07
MarkopotomusI'm using Xubuntu xfce4 here and er... I appear to have lost the ability to copy and paste :s22:07
viddcarlis, get a functional normal install first22:08
carlisok22:08
zoredacheyrrat209: another option might be to simply pop the drive out, and put it in another computer and install from there22:08
viddusing the alt-cd or the mini cd22:08
viddnot the live cd...cuzz that isnt working on your system22:08
yrrat209ok, good thought on that.  Thanks.22:08
viddyrrat209, doing the "move the drive" install does weird things to basic sytem stuff though....so beware22:09
yrrat209Right, I wondered about that.  Different CPU hardware, etc.22:10
yrrat209Reading now on No CD install.  Didn't see this before.22:11
zoredachevidd: I have moved disks around all the time...  The trick is, to basically do a cli-only install, then add additional packages once the drive is back in the system22:11
viddzoredache, i know...just giving the boy (?) a heads-up is all22:12
ochosiyrrat209, you could also connect an external cd-drive (e.g. if friends of yours own one...)22:13
MarkopotomusI'm trying to backup some files onto a USB hard drive. Problems seem to be that I can't write anything onto it, and also that I don't seem to be able to see the bulk of the files that I'm pretty sure are on the drive that I'm trying to back up. Could anyone help with this, pwease?22:14
ochosiMarkopotomus, have you checked the permissions/user rights on the mount?22:16
Markopotomusochosi: Ah, no, I havent :s It's my mums laptop and I havent actually used it for about 6 months. All I know is it worked when I set it up for her, and every few months she comes to me saying she's broken something :s22:17
Markopotomusso, erm... my memory is pretty hazy on what to do with it.22:17
Markopotomuswell, on the USB hard drive's properies it says Acess:Read and write, Group: root22:19
ochosiMarkopotomus, how did you mount the drive anyway? (and: what version are you using)22:19
ochosiMarkopotomus, maybe a manual mount from the terminal would be better then22:20
Markopotomusochosi - I honestly don't remember. I set it up ages ago. All I remember is it's running xfce422:20
ochosiMarkopotomus, have you ever done a dist-upgrade since then?22:21
Markopotomusochosi: ah, no, I havent.22:22
ochosiMarkopotomus, how about a "uname -r", what kernel-version does that tell u?22:23
ochosiMarkopotomus, (in the terminal)22:23
Markopotomusochosi: Actually I was kinda planning on getting rid of xubuntu and installing Ubuntu 9.04 instead. This laptop can handle it, I think.22:23
Markopotomusone mo22:23
ochosiMarkopotomus, not a good thing to announce in this channel if you want help :)22:24
Markopotomus2.6.24-23-generic22:24
ochosiMarkopotomus, that means you have hardy installed (aka 8.04)22:25
ochosiMarkopotomus, that means you have xfce 4.4.*22:25
Markopotomusyeah, sorry... mind you, if you can persuade me that later versions aren't going to be a little easier to along with then I'd consider sticking with it. It'd save me time, for sure.22:25
MarkopotomusAt the moment, however, my priority is backing up a bunch of data, which I havent figured out how to do :s22:26
ochosiyeah, i see22:26
MarkopotomusSo I should do a dist-upgrade?22:27
ochosinot for this problem22:27
Markopotomusah22:27
ochosieven though it might help, the problem is too trivial to do an upgrade22:27
ochosiwell, have a look at the rights management in the man-page of mount ("man mount" in the terminal)22:27
Markopotomusright. But there are other problems - the xfce4 panel keeps crashing22:27
MarkopotomusWhich is not something my mum is ever going to be able to figure out how to get out of.22:28
ochosiMarkopotomus, yeah, for that you can do an upgrade. the panel (amongst other things) has become a *lot* more stable22:28
Markopotomusah, cool22:28
* Markopotomus - man mounting (*ahem*)22:29
MarkopotomusErm... that's just printed one massive load of text in the terminal22:29
ochosiok, i'll have a quick look at that22:30
MarkopotomusIt looks like a standard document rather than anything specific to this machine? 1536 lines...22:31
Markopotomusdunno which bit to copy.22:31
ochosino, well it's a manual. a generic one for this version of mount22:31
ochosithe option "-w" gives you read/write access, even though it should be default you could try it22:31
ochosiso first you have to know the device name22:32
ochosilike /dev/sdb122:32
MarkopotomusOh, the synopsis;22:32
Markopotomusah right22:32
MarkopotomusI, erm... sorry, how do I get it to tell me about my drives?22:33
ochosias long as the harddrive is mounted in thunar simply try the "mount" command without any options22:34
Markopotomusoh yep22:34
ochosithat should tell you mountpoints and device-nodes22:34
MarkopotomusI do see22:34
MarkopotomusIt would be especially helpful if it also told me how big each one was, so I could differentiate between them :s22:35
Markopotomusah, I see, it's /dev/sdb122:36
Markopotomuserm... I mean /dev/sdb522:36
ochosidoes the drive have more than one partition?22:37
ochosior do you have more than one usb-drive connected at the same time?22:38
Markopotomusah, sorry... Im not being clear here. There are two 80 gig hard drives. THe secondary is split into 2 40gig partitions, one of which has Xubuntu. I'm trying to backup from that partition to a USB hard drive.22:39
Markopotomusjust one USB hard drive.22:39
ochosialright22:40
carlisI am installig xubunte and take time22:40
ochosiMarkopotomus, i just realized you could also try to change the ownership of the folder22:41
Markopotomuswhich one?22:41
ochosiMarkopotomus, try to do a "sudo chown $USER /media/$MOUNTPOINT"22:41
Markopotomusooh it says access read only :s22:41
ochosiMarkopotomus, that would give your user ownership of the folder and with that you could change the rights (even in thunar)22:42
ochosiMarkopotomus, access read only doesn't matter. thunar has a rights-management different that doesn't necessarily reflect the mount-options22:43
Markopotomusok22:43
Markopotomusjust doing22:43
Markopotomuserm, the USB hard drive name has gaps in it, how do I get that working as a terminal command? Or should I be using its mount path wosname (sdb5)?22:45
MarkopotomusUnderscores?22:45
ochosiyou should be using the folder name of the drive22:46
ochosijust navigate to it in thunar and look at the location bar22:46
Markopotomusyeah, that's what I've done - there are spaces in the name though22:46
ochosii see22:47
MarkopotomusSorry to be so dumb with this - do the $symbols stay or go22:47
ochosiso either put quotation marks " around or escape the space with a backslash before it \22:47
Markopotomusright22:48
ochosidon't worry, it's okl22:48
Markopotomuscheers ;)22:48
Markopotomusok, that seems to have done something22:49
ochosiso right-click the folder and try to change the permissions22:49
ochosiand maybe that would change your permissions on the drive22:49
Markopotomuschown: changing ownership of <path> Read-only file system22:49
artistxeyeah. what's up with ppl not knowing basic terminal here ? doesn't xubuntu come with resources/help files ?22:51
Markopotomusartistxe: it's a little hard to access them when the xfce panel has crashed and, if people are helpful, it's tends to make things a lot more condusive.22:52
ochosiMarkopotomus, so?22:53
MarkopotomusI have to say, the quality of the community is pretty outstanding, on the whole. People are brilliantly helpful.22:53
ochosidoes that mean it worked?22:53
Markopotomusochosi: Ah, Im not sure it has, unfortunately. It *says* read and write in its properties, however I don't seem to be able to actually make files there.22:54
artistxenot you Markopotomus  . just have been noticing lately just how many ppl do not know command yet. even basic commands. always happy to help when I can , but I would hope it would be one of the first things a newbie would tackle22:54
Markopotomusartistxe: where would you suggest someone go to get a grip on basic syntax?22:54
ochosiMarkopotomus, well, it should be still group "root". change that. and change the rest of the permissions to very promiscuous22:54
Markopotomusochosi: oo-er.22:55
artistxeso many places. there are alot of files you can do a pdf search on. I have even found copies of "Unix in a Nutshell" freely available out there.22:55
artistxehttp://www.ss64.com/bash/22:56
Markopotomusartistxe: thing is, I've looked but even so, I've learnt far more by annoying people in chat rooms.22:56
Markopotomusartistxe: However, I would like to learn more, so cheers, I'll check that link.22:57
artistxe:)22:57
Markopotomusoh, useful indeed :)22:57
ochosiMarkopotomus, so that didn't have any effect?22:58
ochosiMarkopotomus,22:58
Markopotomusochosi: actually, I dont seem to be able to edit the permisions :s22:58
artistxehttp://www.oreillynet.com/linux/cmd/    then you can move up to that22:58
ochosiMarkopotomus, but you should be the owner now, are you not?22:58
Markopotomusartistxe: ta muchly22:58
Markopotomusochosi: I'd have thought so - but, erm... Im not quite sure what ideas the drive has :s22:59
ochosiMarkopotomus, anyways, another way would be to go straight from the terminal with "sudo chmod 777 /media/$MOUNTPOINT"22:59
ochosiMarkopotomus, did the chown commmand give you any output?22:59
Markopotomusyep23:00
Markopotomuschanging permisions etc... read only file system23:00
ochosiah right23:00
ochosithat means you had an error in your syntax23:00
ochosipost the command you used23:00
ochosithe complete one23:00
Markopotomusirena@sita:~$ sudo chmod 777 /media/"Rena ExtHD"23:00
Markopotomuschmod: changing permissions of `/media/Rena ExtHD': Read-only file system23:00
ochosiah right, that looks ok, somehow.23:01
ochosiwell let's start again with the unmounting of the drive23:01
ochosijust unmount it in thunar23:01
sober_anyone else having problems with new xubuntu saving resolution settings?23:01
ochosiMarkopotomus, then create a directory (like /media/rena)23:01
artistxeMarkopotomus, trying to change permissions of a dir ?23:02
ochosiMarkopotomus, oh, right. use -R23:02
Markopotomusartistxe: just trying to get a USB hard drive to be writeable.23:02
ochosiartistxe, thanks for the attentive reading :)23:02
artistxeblow me ;)23:02
artistxe:)23:02
Markopotomusochosi: on my way23:03
artistxeyes. and is -R23:03
ochosiMarkopotomus, like in: sudo chmod -R 777 /media/"Rena ExtHD"23:03
sober_xubuntu 9.04 does not save my resolution and refresh settings after restart23:03
Markopotomusochosi: I er... dont appear to be able to create a folder in /media/ ?23:04
ochosiwell, obviously you gotta use "sudo" for that, you *usually* don't have much more than read-rights in folders other than home23:05
Markopotomusoh, right, right, I was in thunar there23:06
artistxeinstead of sudo mkdir you could always sudo thunar as well.23:06
SiDiartistxe: no23:07
sober_?23:07
SiDigksudo thunar * and avoid it anyways :)23:07
SiDisudo thunar will modify your config files and set their owner to root, then if you change your settings afterwards it wont be saved23:08
artistxeI do avoid it. never a REASON TO USE IT23:08
artistxesorry for the caps23:08
SiDiartistxe: then dont advertise it without warning ^^23:08
artistxeoh. and there you go. I assumed incorrectly. my bad. again . I never use it that way anyway23:08
artistxeyou are right. mybad23:09
sober_xubuntu 9.04 does not save my resolution and refresh settings after restart23:09
SiDisober_: gpu drivers imho :)23:10
sober_SiDi, that doesn't even come close to making anysense23:11
SiDigraphics card drivers, in my humble opinion.23:11
sober_i know what you mean but thats not even close23:11
SiDiWhat gpu do you have ?23:12
SiDiand xubuntu version, too ?23:12
sober_SiDi, we are talknig about saving settings not higher resolution23:12
sober_read the question23:12
SiDisober_..23:14
SiDiThe first symptom of wrongly setup GPU drivers = resolution not saved23:14
SiDithats my 2 cents.23:14
SiDieither, hardcode it to your xorg.conf23:14
DarkTanwhat is the command in install xfce?23:15
SiDifrom Ubuntu ?23:15
SiDisudo aptitude install xfce4 (only xfce) / xubuntu-desktop (xfce + all the xfce4 packages you'll need + sexy artwork and other apps you may need in an xfce session)23:16
sober_SiDi, you should change your nick to captain obvious23:17
JPohlmannsober_: You should be more polite.23:17
sober_JPohlmann, if an old lady ask you to help her cross the street would you verbally tell her how to walk?23:17
SiDisober_: when you first came in the channel, i asked you about your gpu drivers. You didn't give me any info that could have helped me to inform you about currently known GPU drivers issues. The main and almost only case of "resolution not saved" is GPU drivers issue. The only other possible one that i can think of is permission problems.23:18
Markopotomus:s23:18
sober_because its not the gpu dude seriously honestly there is no specific and or modified driver for this chip23:19
JPohlmannsober_: I'd know that she has walked on her feet her whole life. Nobody in here can guess how many experience with Linux you have. So don't be rude to people who try to help you.23:19
sober_piss offf23:19
JPohlmannEven if those people are wrong.23:19
SiDibah :P23:19
MarkopotomusEee. Poor dude must be stressed out.23:19
MarkopotomusI, er... still dont appear to be able to write to this here USB hard drive.23:20
DarkTanSidi, thx23:22
ochosiMarkopotomus, ok, where in the list of advice i gave you are you? :)23:26
* Markopotomus cries on ochosi's shoulder some more23:26
MarkopotomusI, erm... I got confused round about the mkdir thing, having unmounted the usb hard drive...23:27
* ochosi is fortunately used to that23:27
ochosik, so let's pick it up there23:28
Markopotomusrighto23:28
ochosiso, have you created a directory?23:28
Markopotomusyus23:28
Markopotomus/media/rena/23:28
ochosigood. so now you can mount the drive to there, with something like "mount -w /dev/sdb* /media/rena"23:28
ochosiwhere * is the number that i can't remember now23:29
Markopotomus523:29
ochosik23:29
Markopotomusooer crazy stuff23:29
MarkopotomusFailed to mount blahblah.. Operation not supported. Mount is denied because NTFS is marked to be in use...23:30
zerothisso, if I make a live CD partition on a USB drive using unetbootin, then xubuntu on a 2nd partition of the drive. Will both be options in grub?23:30
Markopotomusmount -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb5 /media/rena -o force ?23:31
ochosiMarkopotomus, so the drive is ntfs?23:31
Markopotomusochi ah, I imagine it probably is, yeah23:31
ochosii wouldn't force it23:31
SiDii would23:31
ochosi:)23:32
Markopotomusochi - I certainly didnt format the USB hard drive to ext3 or anything23:32
SiDialways happens when a ntfs part isnt properly unmounted23:32
SiDiusually usb drives are vfat16 though.23:32
ochosihaven't used ntfs partitions for ages :D23:32
SiDi(mine was ext3 but i killed its MBR)23:32
Markopotomuswoo23:32
MarkopotomusSooo... erm. if I'm not forcing it, is there a way to suggest politely but firmly?23:33
ochosihihi23:33
ochosiwell, force it. maybe try to add the -w just to be sure23:34
zerothisWindows drives are easily destroyed by *normal* use, I'd force it. but i'd be aware that it may never be useable again23:34
MarkopotomusHow to add the -w? mount -tw ntfs-3g /dev/sdb5 /media/rena -o force23:34
Markopotomusieee23:34
MarkopotomusMy mum'd go spare if I wrote of her USB HDD.23:34
MarkopotomusAll I'm trying to do is back up her work :p23:35
Markopotomus*wrote off23:35
ochosino, separately. like mount -w -t ntfs-3g /dev/sdb5 /media/rena -o force23:35
Markopotomusrighto then23:35
Markopotomusand... sudo it?23:35
carlissidi I don`t receive answer of them why ?23:36
ochosiif it doesn't make you a sandwich then "sudo" it. like here: http://xkcd.com/149/23:36
SiDicarlis: huh ?23:36
Markopotomusbest comic ever.23:36
carlisi wrote them last thursday23:37
SiDioh, the install team23:37
SiDiwell, wait a few days23:37
carlisabout the ubiquity isuue23:37
SiDitry launchpad questions+answers too23:37
zerothisMarkopotomus: did you try making a dd image of the drive"? you can mess with the dd image without worry (except for lost time)23:37
SiDithere might be more people reading there23:37
Markopotomuszerothis: nope! A dd image?23:38
Markopotomusochosi: Oho! I appear to be able to write stuff!23:38
carlishow do i go launchpad question+answer ?23:38
ochosiMarkopotomus, two thumbs up :)23:38
SiDicarlis: https://answers.launchpad.net23:38
zerothisi think it stands for device dump. basically its a hardware level copy of a device, in this case, a hard drive. let me look up the command line real quick23:39
Markopotomusochosi: Cheeeeeeeeeeeeers so much for all your help there, that's ace :)23:40
SiDiochosi: i almost bought the t-shirt of this comic23:40
SiDibut the shipping fees were more expensive than the shirt T_T23:41
Markopotomusochosi: Actually, there's another puzzle which is somewhat getting to me right now. Thing is, I'm pretty sure my mum has a load of stuff on this computer however I can only find three files. So either there's load of stuff hidden from me, or she has inadvertently deleted it all.23:41
Markopotomusochosi: I really don't think she's done that. I'm just puzzled as to where it's all gone.23:41
ochosiMarkopotomus, strg + h toggles hide/show hidden files in thunar23:42
SiDiMarkopotomus: then the _last_ thinkg you should do is mounting the usb drive with write access23:42
carlissidi the page you gave me, I was looking for it and the webpage say it There are no questions matching "ubiquity issue" with the requested statuses.23:42
SiDiso i suggest you unmount it before linux creates files, and you run a windows app to retrieve deleted files on ntfs partitions :)23:42
zerothisdd if=/dev/sdb conv=sync,noerror bs=64K | gzip -c > /mnt/sda1/sdb.img.gz23:42
SiDithe more you'll write on it, the less there will be files that can be saved back23:42
ochosiMarkopotomus, for the rest i can only say from my own xp that mothers and pcs are a difficult issue...23:42
Markopotomusochosi: *checks recycle bin* *hyperventilates for a second* *ohgodseriouslymumwhatareyoudoing*23:43
SiDicarlis: https://answers.launchpad.net/ubiquity/+addquestion23:43
MarkopotomusOk, mystery solved, albeit in a rather scary way :|23:43
SiDicarlis: describe your problem with as many details as you can, and wait for an answer. There are not many people working on ubiquity, thus it takes them time to answer.23:44
SiDiMarkopotomus: she trashed every file ? :D23:44
MarkopotomusSiDi: It seriously looks like it. It's too wierd. She's not THAT much of a n00b, I just dont understand it.23:44
SiDimy boss once deleted a lot of important files by accident23:45
ochosiMarkopotomus, no, she's not a n00b, she's a mum :)23:45
SiDiand he had his trash to auto empty every morning23:45
zerothisthat command copies the drive to a compressed file, bit-for-bit. small easy to copy and move. you can also mount it as a drive or write it to another hard drive. the command also skips errors, substituting dummy data so the image is a funtional drive23:45
SiDi_and_ we were using his pc as a file server for the company's needs23:45
SiDii was so launghing the next morning :D23:45
Markopotomuswow23:45
Markopotomuszerothis: Interesting. Will try to remember that one.23:47
zerothishttp://linuxweblog.com might have more info about dd images and tricks23:47
zerothisnote that the command does nothing about existing errors on the original drive (other than 'band aid' the damed area so its nolonger an 'error'), so if there are files in the damaged area, they are lost. Hopefully, everything you need to keep is not on the damaged areas23:50
Markopotomusgroovy23:54
Markopotomushowever, I'm knackered now. Must sleep. Thanks for the help all, particuarly ochosi :)23:54
Markopotomusnn23:54
ochosiMarkopotomus, you're welcome23:54
ochositoo late :)23:54
