m1dn1ghthi guys- trying kubuntu for the first time but can't figure out how to add a keyboard shortcut to open a terminal.  In gnome it's one of the items on the list to change but the list of shortcuts in kde doesn't seem to have it.11:41

ankan_firevai: I figure so.. At install of 9.04 I had to go into there and put driver to VESA since everything was non functioning by install default. And from there installed ATI drivers. Xorg pretty much only have 3 sections where driver is "configured video device" etc.17:52

Laeborganyway to get back knetworkmanager in Jaunty ?20:05
riccardosalve20:06
phoenixzDid I miss something with the new kubuntu version 9.04? I started with 7.04, always updated, used to run backports, upgraded to the first alphas of 7.10, 8.04, etc, and never did I have a problem.20:15
phoenixzNow, I upgraded 8.10 to 9.04 beta, and I saw no visual changes, but my machine got like 2 times slower, in bootup and usage, and is instable at best. X wont start anymore without complaining about config errors and requiring some 2 reboots, the GUI hangs up every so many hours, WIFI isnt working anymore (supposedly there is a network manager applet, but I dont see any applets but the basic plasma aplets, even after manually installing ALL plasma related20:15
phoenixzthings in the apt repos...)...20:15
phoenixzWhat happened? Ubuntu always worked well, have not reinstalled for longer than I can remember, always worked with updates, all was well and now my laptop is virtually useless..20:15
xjjkphoenixz: does your machine have Intel graphics?20:15
phoenixzOh, and the new konversation replacement, quassel.. looks nice at first, but.. konversation works and is simple.. quassel, dunno, but just works weird, takes 90% CPU lots of times (for god knows what reason)20:16
xjjkphoenixz: there's a new version of X in Jaunty, you probably have to modify your X config20:16
phoenixzYeah, I know, Im ranting here but its just a lot of frustration of the last 4 weeks that I never before have had with Linux.. weird..20:16
xjjkOK20:16
phoenixzxjjk: yeah, intel20:17
phoenixzxjjk: I imagine, but when X complains, there is an option to create new X config.. so I do that, reboot and ... sometimes it works.. sometimes not..20:17
xjjkthere have been some serious performance regressions for Intel GFX20:17
xjjkphoenixz: do you need an X config?20:17
phoenixzxjjk: and after a few reboots (or, another apt-get upgrade) the very problem is there again20:17
justin__woah it works20:18
phoenixzxjjk: I suppose.. but the thing is, I get the option to make a new x config, so I do, then I need to reboot.. and sometimes it will suddenly work, sometimes I will get back at the same error..20:18
xjjkphoenixz: odd20:19
phoenixzxjjk: in any case, a reboot later, it then finally may work.. only to fail again after the next reboot.. as if the X config is not stored or something20:19
xjjkwhat's the error?20:19
phoenixzxjjk: yeah.. NEVER had these kinds of problems in linux20:19
phoenixzxjjk: gotta tell you from my bad memory, but it complains about not being able to correctly probe hardware or x config invalid .. Gives me like 4 options (run ubuntu in low graphics mode, create new xconfig file, revise log and.. annother one)20:20
xjjkphoenixz: if you don't need an X config file... try just removing it20:21
xjjk(backing up of course)20:21
phoenixzxjjk: I found initially that running ubunut in low graphics mode actually made it work perfectly, dont ask why..20:21
xjjkit's not really needed for X 1.620:21
xjjkphoenixz: bulletproof X IMHO sucks (that's what you're encountering)20:21
phoenixzxjjk: X bullet proof? whah?20:21
xjjkphoenixz: it's an Ubuntu feature to fix your X config when it's broken20:22
phoenixzxjjk: thats like X no longer needing a config file?20:22
xjjkphoenixz: no, bulletproof X is from 7.04 I think20:22
phoenixzxjjk: ah.. Well, it would be nice if the bullet proof X actually would work.. because it doesnt, AFAIK20:22
xjjkit's an old feature that's incredibly annoying20:22
=== pingus is now known as new_bember
phoenixzAnyway, Kubuntu 9.04 is really a disappointment I have to say.. Not to just complain, I love ubuntu, all for it, Im the "ubuntu evangelist" here at work and so but.. 8.10 was great, 9.04 didnt give anything new good stuff, only new bad stuff..20:24
xjjkphoenixz: everyone to their own... I feel the opposite20:24
phoenixzxjjk: Really, I want to feel the oposite! :) 9.04 supposedly would boot faster but it actually boots slower.. Now, my laptop is loaded, I knnow, and it always booted a bit slow, but now its like 50% worse than before..20:25
xjjkphoenixz: I hate to say this, but tried reinstalling?20:25
xjjkyou may be carrying over crud from previous installs20:25
phoenixzxjjk: Contemplating it.. but that would be kind of like.. defeat :) I installed 7.04 and upgraded 3 times without a single flaw..20:26
geniiphoenixz: This is why it's usually a good idea to stick with LTS versions for your main OS and only tinker with the intermediate versions, not use them exclusively20:26
xjjkthat is one thing that dissappoints me about Ubuntu; online version to version upgrades don't always work right20:26
phoenixzxjjk: It should..20:26
xjjka lot of things "should"...20:27
xjjkDebian does it great20:27
xjjknot sure why Ubuntu doesn't20:27
phoenixzxjjk: If (k)ubuntu wants to be taken seriously by mainstream, this kind of stuff has to be flawless..20:27
xjjkphoenixz: yes/no, mainstream, few upgrade version to version20:27
xjjkFedora AFAIK it's recommended you reinstall for new versions20:27
xjjkSuSE as well20:27
xjjkand yeh, Windows too since we're on the topic20:28
phoenixzaaaannnd firefox just crashed AGAIN... Didnt do that either in 8.10.. now this happens like 5 times a day..20:28
xjjkupgraded Windows installs are always full of huge amounts of crud20:28
phoenixzxjjk: windows ALWAYS are full of garbage, installed OR upgraded.. :)20:28
phoenixzxjjk: And the entire "No reason to reinstall" is a perfect argument to get people to try it.. I should not have to reinstall for every new version..20:29
phoenixzxjjk: and it always has worked so far.. too bad..20:29
xjjkphoenixz: well, keep your /home20:29
xjjkreinstalling the rest of the system is not so bad20:30
phoenixzand quanta also got messed up, before I would forget that one..20:30
xjjkis quanta in 9.04?20:30
phoenixzxjjk: yeah.. Quanta has been there since god knows when.. its KDE3 version though still.. there is a KDE4 version in development, but god knows when that will b e out20:31

Dhraakellianmtu: this is happening in the Configure encrypted volumes section22:11
Dhraakellianit did ask me for passphrases the first time22:12

tomsdaleDhraakellian: is that a Theme or a package?22:13
Dhraakellianthe window decoration, that is, since that's what you appear to be asking22:13
mtuyou boot the normal (not alternate) live CD. then install cryproot in the live system and load the modules for your encryption. set up the encrypted partition by hand, and install into /dev/mapper/root instead of /dev/sda2 etc.22:13
mtubut then you have to heavily tweak the system on the root partition to make sure it will boot22:13

mtugod dammit! graphics performance with 'radeon' is crap, but 'vesa' won't allow 1024x768... 'ati' and 'fglrx' don't work. any ideas?22:21
Dhraakelliantomsdale: it'd be Crystal 2.0.x though, which doesn't do quite so much with transparency as the 1.x KDE3 version22:21
Dhraakellianbut the main nice thing I like about it is how small I can get it22:22

k4_k4i have a little problem :22:25
OceanwatcherWhat is the name of the partitioning module for KDE?22:25
k4_k4Kubuntu : i have soprano-backend-sesame installed , and it has the dependancy to libsoprano-dev22:25
mtuDhraakellian: think you could move the data off of /home to a backup and remake the partition?22:25
DhraakellianI think I remember seeing "LUKS" and "dm_crypt" when SUSE was prompting me for passphrases22:25
OceanwatcherThe one that imho should have been in the system settings :-)22:25
mtuwell then there should be LUKS information to the partitions...22:26
k4_k4the problem is , if  libsoprano-dev is installed it pulls automatically the system soprano libs22:26
k4_k4and not the libs from kdesupport compiled by hand22:26
Dhraakelliany'know, I don't think I have anything on this drive that isn't on my desktop too22:26
Dhraakellianmtu: well, maybe it got confused by the stuff I already tried to do from the kubuntu installer?22:26
mtuor maybe suse just uses some stuff with a twist so it's not directly compatible22:27
mtuin any case, a backup of your data and re-doing the whole thing is probably what would work best. but i can't talk you through it all i'm afraid22:27
Dhraakellianmtu: no problem22:28

Dhraakellianmy main troubles with KDE4.2 are probably related to the fact that I went in and edited the config files to get per-desktop wallpapers22:40

skierpagemauri29, I don't know how you add to Dolphin's "Create New..." menu, putting something in your local Templates doesn't do anything.  Seems like a doc bug!23:29
mauri29skierpage, I don't know that too(?). I opened "gksudo kate /usr/share/templates/.source/TextFile.txt" , then I did -> Tools -> End of Line -> Windows/DOS, save, and that's all. When I crate new text file, this file is with the format EOL (not EOF like I said) of Windows like I need. This is to send text files to Windows users and that they can view them correctly with notepad.exe.23:33
