[04:45] So, it seems like the -virtual kernel is actually the -server kernel in disguise https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux-meta/+bug/307924 -- my friend has linux-image-virtual and uname -a gives: 2.6.28-11-server #42-Ubuntu SMP Fri Apr 17 02:48:10 UTC 2009 i686 GNU/Linux [04:46] YokoZar: Error: Could not parse data returned by Malone: The read operation timed out [04:48] YokoZar, do you mean bug 307924 [04:48] Malone bug 307924 in linux-meta "linux-image-2.6.27(-7)-virtual contains server kernel ..." [Undecided,New] https://launchpad.net/bugs/307924 [04:49] Yes, it appears it's still live in the released Jaunty [04:49] He upgraded his 8.10 virtual server to 9.04 and now it has the server kernel [04:50] http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/linux-image-virtual --- if you follow that into the current numbered linux-kernel package and do list files you'll see how they're all misnamed [04:53] http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/amd64/linux-image-2.6.28-11-virtual/filelist [05:30] YokoZar, actually, -virtual flavor was removed since Intrepid 810 [05:31] YokoZar, so since Intrepid 810, we use server image for virtual usage [05:31] cooloney: shouldn't the -virtual metapackage have been dropped then? [05:31] and automatically shifted to -server? [05:32] Or is there another reason for keeping the metapackage around? (LTS to LTS update?) [05:32] YokoZar, i am not sure, but I will ping other guys in kernel team who know this issue [05:33] YokoZar, linux-meta contains lots of packages which will be discussed in this Karmic UDS [05:33] some of them might be dropped in the Karmic [05:34] ok that makes sense [05:34] The bigger problem is that the package description for the -virtual doesn't show that it doesn't exist anymore [05:34] eg apt-cache show linux-image-2.6.28-11-virtual [05:39] YokoZar, i agree, that is very confusing === fabbione-vac is now known as fabbione [06:50] cooloney, YokoZar: The virtual and server kernels were always almost identical. The only difference was the selection of included modules. In Intrepid we took the natural consequence of that and made the -virtual kernel package use the exact same kernel image, with a stack of modules filtered out. [06:50] soren: that makes sense, although my friend got scared by possible breakages when he googled the issue and found that bug report [06:51] if it were clear that -virtual was basically nothing special he might not have worried [06:51] I'll make a note on the bug. [06:51] soren, thanks, i understand that [06:53] soren, so for user space application such as xen-hypervisor-3.3, it is same as -server and -virtual? [06:59] cooloney: I'm not completely sure I understand the question, but I think the answer is "yes". [07:01] soren, since the kernel image is the same for both -server and -virtual, i guess user space application has no difference for this two flavors. [07:02] Usually, yes. [07:02] actually, IIRC, there is a bug for such application xen-hypervisor-3.3, they think we dropped -virtual flavor, which means ubuntu does not support virtual [07:03] with your help, i can answer that question now, i think [07:03] "they"? [07:03] the bug reporter [07:09] sorry, i fail to find the LP bug URL [07:27] Is there a repo that will allow me to always have the latest stable kernel? [07:44] Z3ro3X: define "stable" [09:58] FYI: this bug report indicates that jaunty probably carries a sauce patch that accidently forces swrast powerbook G4's machines... see discussion here --> https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/mesa/+bug/370200 and also this upstream bug --> https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=21367 [09:58] Malone bug 370200 in mesa "r300 on "PowerBook G4" mac: only swrast after booting and backgrounds render blue instead of black" [Undecided,New] === erle64- is now known as erle- === awe is now known as awe-lunch [17:19] hi everyone === awe-lunch is now known as awe [18:39] ogasawara, ping === awe is now known as awe-afk === awe-afk is now known as awe === awe is now known as awe-afk [20:28] I'm trying to run "make pdfdocs" on linux kernel directory, but it complains about not having passivetex, which doesn't seem to exist in repositories [20:28] Anyone know how to build the pdfdocs? === awe-afk is now known as awe
