[00:01] yes, I have installed xubuntu completely and don`t have connection to the wifi [00:01] did you install from the alt cd or mini iso instead of the live cd like i told you would fix all this? [00:01] vidd: nothing prints even with e2ps [00:02] Balrog_, you need to restart cups [00:02] I have installed it fro usb stick [00:03] carlis, the installer would have had you set up your keyboard during the install [00:04] I already fixed the keyboard [00:04] and now I want to fix the connection to internet [00:05] are you near the desktop? [00:05] The 2 pcs show me a white x [00:05] yes [00:05] I am near the desktop [00:06] right-click and choose :edit connection" [00:06] ok [00:06] and then ? [00:06] click the wifi tab [00:06] ok [00:07] vidd: restarted cups and nothing happend after trying to print [00:07] what is there? [00:07] nothing [00:07] Balrog_, then im out of ideas [00:07] it`s empty [00:07] carlis, hit "add" [00:07] ok [00:07] Balrog_: evince sucks for printing. Honnestly [00:08] last time i tried to print from evince, the images on my pdf were going all black [00:08] SiDi: should I use xpdf? All I want to do is print PDF files [00:08] you can try it, yeh [00:09] vidd ?? [00:09] and then n? [00:09] vidd and then ? [00:10] Balrog_: also a reason why it wouldnt _try_ to print is that its specifically designed for gnome [00:10] Balrog_: it might want to contact some gnome daemon in order to launch the print, and that'd explain why it doesn't answer [00:11] Balrog_: do you have libgnomecups1.0-1 installed ? [00:12] SiDi: yes. [00:12] Run system-config-printer, do you see your printer ? [00:13] I can print from Firefox [00:13] yes, it's there [00:13] hey all, dealing with a ubuntu issue concerning video display on a dell x200 laptop. Wondering if some one would be willing to help? [00:13] * vidd lost power [00:13] sorry xubuntu* [00:14] carlis, you good now with wifi? [00:14] SiDi: any ideas? [00:15] where's the best place for me to find icons? [00:16] Balrog_: no :/ probably a missing gnome daemon required by evince [00:16] u said me to hit in the add button and now what do i do ?? [00:16] any logs to look at? [00:16] anzo: what graphic card does ithave ? [00:16] its an 830MG [00:16] intel card... [00:17] carlis, enter your wifi info =\ [00:17] and also, is it a network, or a regular laptop ? [00:17] * vidd would think that was rather obvious [00:17] anzo: what xubuntu version, then ? Xubuntu 9.04 has a recent version of Xorg, and there are no intel drivers for all cards yet. [00:17] anzo: i meant a netbook * not a network :P [00:17] Balrog_: aybe .xsession-errors [00:17] i had black screens with 9.04 so i went back to 8.10 [00:18] I have to enter ssid. how do i get it vidd ?? [00:18] its not a net book its to old its an pentium III at 800mhz [00:18] carlis, are you really this way????? [00:18] anzo the problem is newest distros probably dont ship the driver on the CD anymore [00:19] you cantr remember something i told you less the 4 hours ago? [00:19] anzo: i can't help you on this, though, i really dont know much about intel cards :/ [00:19] ok how do i go about getting driver [00:19] This is difficult [00:19] I have to enter the ssid and I don`t know it [00:19] right-click on you wifi connection in windows, choose "network list" and LOOK AT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!! [00:20] cause i have configed xorg to keep cursor but i keep getting artifacting and weird charter blocks [00:20] you had to do all this to get wifi to work in windows [00:20] i just got done w/ upgrade and now wine sub menu has disappeared [00:21] ok [00:21] R1cochet, you need to re-install wine maybe? [00:21] well im running utorrent right now [00:22] R1cochet, i dont use wine so im kinda reaching in the blind here =] [00:22] all good [00:22] thank you [00:22] anzo: you'll have to play with xorg.conf apparently :/ [00:23] carlis, you find out what your ssid is yet? [00:23] does 9.04 have a menu editor? o cant find it [00:23] R1cochet: it doesnt [00:23] R1cochet, i cnt find it either [00:23] yes, I have found it [00:23] SiDi, YET ANOTHER BASIC FUNCTION DOWN THE DRAIN!!!! [00:24] is there one out there? [00:24] carlis, so ya good now? [00:24] anzo: google translate this page : http://forum.ubuntu-fr.org/viewtopic.php?id=309238 [00:24] anzo: this is a post from the french forums with people who tried different xorg options for their intel cards. [00:25] no, I have to write bssid now. what do i have to write there ? [00:25] vidd: the menu has been completely rewritten, they didnt have the time for the editor [00:25] carlis: bssid is optional, pass on [00:25] what is the best license to publish a programwith? [00:25] is there a way to get "switch user" back in the log out screen? [00:26] SiDi, fortunantly, the old hacked menu warks just fine [00:26] J_Litewski: depends :) i publish under GPL3, unless i really dont care then public domain [00:26] R1cochet, you just want EVERYTHING! [00:26] well yea [00:26] J_Litewski: Any FSF approved license [00:26] Laughing Out Loud [00:26] ah [00:26] then is there a way to switch user through terminal [00:26] J_Litewski, that is not necssesarily tru.... [00:27] J_Litewski: if you really want freedom you may prefer BSD to LGPL, but thats technical sides :P Also, CECILL is compatible with GPL but better for some specific countries' legislation [00:27] it all depends on what rights you want to pass along to the "next guy" [00:27] actually, public domain lets people do evil things with your code. its a small risk [00:27] vidd ? [00:27] what do i do now ?? [00:27] you fill in the info, and save [00:27] thats it [00:28] oh...and enjoy using the internet [00:28] I know but what do i have write in bssid ???? [00:28] print preview doesn't work either [00:28] i distinctly recall you having been told to leave it blank [00:29] ok [00:29] Balrog_: throw evince in a trash ben ;P [00:29] good night people [00:29] what else do i have to write ?? [00:29] I have these field: [00:29] do you have encryption set up? [00:29] whats the difference between GPL and LGPL? [00:40] is it Personal share key or not? [00:40] I donpt understand [00:41] J_Litewski, my lappy lost power so i have to ssh into my server to run xchat...and the text is god-aweful to read! [00:41] is it WPA2 (with a STUN server) or WPA2-PSK (with a password) [00:41] it´s WPA & WPA2 Personal [00:41] carlis, your wpa personal ....is it shared key or is it password or is it passphrase? [00:42] what is your native language....ill google translate everything! [00:42] It´s has password. I already wrote it [00:42] so it's WPA2-PSK [00:43] J_Litewski, i use wap with mac filtering....is there something i dont know about with wpa? [00:43] *wep [00:44] carlis, on the wireless tab.....which mode did you choose? [00:44] ok [00:44] what do i do now ?? [00:45] Infrastructure [00:45] so ssid is entered,, and mode = infrastructure.... [00:45] Sidi, sorry about the delay someone needed my comp. The link you set me seems to direct itself towards kubuntu and i am running xubuntu. Does this create config issues? Also they are trying to config much new cards.... [00:45] MTU = auto [00:46] yes [00:46] anzo, SiDi is long gone [00:46] anzo, well, ok, not *long*, but a while :) [00:46] crap-o thanks to [00:46] tho* [00:46] carlis, you have 8 or more charcters in your password? [00:47] wait please [00:47] your wifi security password of course [00:47] more thant 8 characters [00:47] put a check in the box for "show password" so you can make sure the password is correct [00:48] ok [00:48] it`s correct [00:48] is the password correct? [00:48] yes [00:49] ok...on to ipv4 settings.... [00:49] is method auto or manual? [00:49] auto [00:50] then the apply button should be selectable [00:51] the ok button is not enable [00:51] wait [00:51] then something is missing [00:51] hey guys. I think that I've found a problem. Don't know if it's Xubuntu related or not. [00:51] it's Apply [00:51] let's say that I access "vi lala" from the terminal [00:52] I close it with :q , and then I do a stat lala [00:52] you need the SSID and the password and thats it [00:52] mi last access time isn't updated [00:52] any ideas? [00:53] The ok button wasn``t enalbe because I had information in BSID. I delete the info in BSSID the ok button is enable [00:53] carlis, did we or did we NOT tell you to LEAVE THAT BLANK [00:54] sorry [00:54] vidd seems to be yelling a lot lately [00:54] * vidd- is 6 kinds of aggitattde [00:55] vidd ??? [00:58] spanish [00:58] its obviously not english [00:59] no neccesita esse [00:59] !spanish | carlis [00:59] carlis: En la mayoría de canales Ubuntu se comunica en inglés. Para ayuda en Español, por favor entre en los canales #ubuntu-es o #kubuntu-es. [00:59] I don`t get connection to internet [01:00] ok [01:00] no #xubuntu-es? that sucks [01:00] I don`t still get connection vidd [01:01] what do i do now ? [01:01] zerothis, no #xubuntu-es, no free disks, no all kinds of other things [01:01] carlis, va #ubuntu-es por favor [01:02] I uderstand u vidd [01:02] I don`t get connection [01:02] can you understand that you are making me very agittated? === awway is now known as lukinfore [01:04] I don`t understand why I don`t get connection if I did everything u said me and didn`t work why ?? [01:04] carlis, please ask help in #ubuntu-es as we are unable to help you more. [01:08] I don`t get help in #xubuntu-es [01:09] vidd what else do i do ? [01:09] drop the 'x' [01:09] it is #ubuntu-es [01:10] carlis, also if there is nobody available, you can try searchin the forums or wait to get help later. [01:13] okay, is there a solution to to stop xubuntu from forgetting to activate my thinkpad volume buttons? [01:13] what I found via google didn't rectify the problem [01:13] Wunderbar, what do you have to do to get them activated then? [01:14] Wunderbar, xubuntu 9.04 killed auto-set volume control keys [01:15] vidd I have this message: Wireless network connection to u2k [01:15] I have to go to 'sound' then select master [01:15] y2k [01:15] and it works [01:15] are you saying that there is no solution vidd? [01:15] Wunderbar, does that "fix"your keys? or just adjust the volume? [01:16] vidd the connectio is connected but don`t show me any page [01:16] it allows me to adjust the volume [01:16] using the keys [01:16] until I have to restart, then I have to do the same thing all over again [01:16] somewhat of a nuisance [01:16] you have more functionality then i do [01:17] :( [01:17] vidd??? [01:17] we need to find the applet used in 8.10 and get it back [01:17] what was the reason given for killing the auto set volume keys option? [01:18] carlis, i told you....im done trying to help you [01:18] Wunderbar, they want the volume app to be pretty [01:18] and unusable [01:18] how do i change the back ground color on my menus? [01:18] vidd the white x is not there [01:19] what do i do now ? [01:19] carlis, you ask someone besides me [01:19] DarkTan, you need to tweak your gtk theme [01:19] carlis, which white X? [01:20] wher do i go for that? [01:20] Wunderbar, well, there are several workarounds. like using a script for that. or just setting the keys in the keyboard-shortcut-dialog [01:20] I've tried the keyboard shortcut [01:20] that definitely doesn't work for me [01:20] DarkTan, i don't suggest doing it if you have little or no experience on it, it's not that trivial [01:20] DarkTan, there is themes with dark menu backgrounds [01:21] I'm using the Xfce-dusk theme, everything is good except for the menus [01:21] light grey back ground with white fonts [01:21] Wunderbar, what do you mean? i mean: be a bit more specific than "didn't work for me" [01:21] DarkTan, /usr/share/themes/ [01:22] okay, it works for that session- but I have to do it all over again when I restart/reboot [01:22] DarkTan, you should find the theme there [01:22] okay [01:22] when don`t u get connection u have a white x [01:22] if u have connection don`t u see a white x [01:22] the pc say me I am connected and don`t show me anypage [01:22] DarkTan, but as i said, it is *not* about just chaging one value. i've been there and it's a relatively big thing. [01:22] what do i do now vidd ?? [01:22] ok [01:23] I have an idea [01:23] how do repair a connection in xubuntu ??? [01:23] knome: well, i don't know much about it, but I'm a fairly good reverse engineer [01:23] does anyone know of an icon set that's "high contrast inverse" but smaller? [01:23] DarkTan, okies. the gtk theming spec is partly also freaky, so expect things that doesn't work as expected :) [01:24] Wunderbar, you mean the keyboard shortcuts are getting lost? [01:24] Wunderbar, or the mixer-settings? [01:24] carlis, there is no "repair" in (x)ubuntu [01:24] the keyboard shortcuts for volume [01:25] * vidd is away [01:25] actually, that's not true- they are there- but they're ignored... [01:25] what else can i do knome ? [01:26] knome: it looks a litte like a themexp file, i'll see what i can figure out [01:26] Wunderbar, hm, i don't really get it. so you have to go to the shortcut-settings again on every reboot? i mean: are the shortcuts still in the list? [01:26] yes, they're listed (correctly) but they're ignored [01:26] Wunderbar, or to put it differently: how do you re-activate the shortcuts? [01:26] DarkTan, sure. good luck and have fun! :) [01:27] I re-enter them [01:27] and magically they work [01:27] thankfull it's not this computer, just in case [01:27] either in 'sound' or 'keyboard shortcuts' [01:27] vidd can u continiue help me ? [01:27] Wunderbar, in "sound"? [01:28] "enable sound and associate events" [01:28] sound settings [01:28] u said me if I intall completely xubuntu i am going to get connection to internet and I didn`t get connection [01:28] Wunderbar, what version of xfce are you using? [01:28] latest [01:28] Wunderbar, or xubuntu, if you like [01:28] Wunderbar, so 4.6? [01:28] vidd ??? [01:29] Wunderbar, i'm using that too, but i don't even have sound settings :| [01:29] carlis, check the forums for getting your wifi card to work in ubuntu [01:29] Wunderbar, how about other keyboard shortcuts? do they also stop working? [01:29] nope, I'm using 4.4 [01:29] do a google seaerch fo ryour card [01:29] Wunderbar, so that's (by far) not the latest version [01:29] I realise that [01:30] I tried creating a shortcut for screenshots [01:30] but that didn't work either [01:30] it´s difficukt [01:30] Wunderbar, but when i asked you what version you're using you replied "latest"... :) anyways. [01:30] actually it is 4.6 [01:30] just checked in 'about xfce' [01:31] anyways, 4.4 was marginally better [01:31] Wunderbar, wait a second, i mean the screenshooter-shortcut is set by default [01:31] is there another person to help me ???? [01:31] mine doesn't work [01:31] Wunderbar, so you did an upgrade recently? [01:32] is there an expert here ? [01:32] a few days ago [01:32] carlis, what is your wifi card again? [01:32] hmm...odd...not every menu has the same background color [01:32] Wunderbar, just try to reset your shortcuts to default, reboot and re-enter them [01:32] vidd, 22:33 carlis: Realtek Semiconductor Corp. RTL8187B Wireless 802.11g [01:32] Wunderbar, or instead of reboot you could also restart your session [01:33] Ive done both of those [01:33] I tend not to reboot [01:33] but sometimes I have to boot into windows [01:35] Wunderbar, well the shortcut-system has changed since 4.4 (which was part of the previous xubuntu-version) so it's not extremely unlikely that something was messed up during the upgrade [01:35] Wunderbar, even though i've never heard of a problem like yours [01:35] someone else told me the other day that they had the same problem [01:35] Wunderbar, you can either: backup and do a clean install or: file a bug report [01:35] clean install sounds like the way to go [01:35] thanks for your help [01:37] did u find andything vidd ? [01:37] carlis, yeah....http://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/linux-newbie-8/usb-wireless-adapter-install-715516/ [01:38] Wunderbar, np [01:39] dmesg|grep rtl8187 gives you what carlis (and thats RTL - just lower-case) [01:42] ochosi, my linux is a clean install...and my sound keys wont work at all [01:44] vidd, what distro? [01:44] xubuntu 9.04 [01:44] did you cofigure the audio [01:44] configure* [01:44] they auto-worked with the volume panel app since breezy [01:44] yeah [01:45] I only installed it briefly and then removed but i had to specify the device i wanted it to control [01:46] vidd how do i write vertical line ? [01:46] it looks like : only longer.... [01:47] I have to write this dmesg|tail [01:47] on en keyboards, it usually just above the return key [01:48] possibly on the same key as \ [01:49] you get it? [01:53] carlis, you good now? [01:54] Alternately, copy and paste [01:54] genii, the computer he is working on has no internet atm [01:55] Aah, OK [01:56] and now he's iggin me [01:56] maybe he's actually reading fosts [01:57] *posts [01:57] genii, were you the one that suggeted lfs? [01:57] vidd: No [01:58] Oh, wait. yes [01:58] "LinuxFromScratch" [01:58] you are evil =] [01:58] i like it [01:59] vidd: Hehe... I recommend it for people who want to know how linux works and what goes into making a simple distribution. If even only once for educational reasons [01:59] you know anything about rtl8187 wifi cards? [02:00] Mine seems to work fine under 8.04 until it overheats [02:00] genii, you have to do anything special? [02:01] vidd I have to write this command dmesg|tail [02:01] wait [02:02] vidd: Nope. Under 7.04 and 7.10 I had to do stuff like blacklist some drivers, but not with 8.04 [02:02] carlis, genii says that card should "just work" [02:02] carlis: On keyboard... next key after: TYUIOP{} [02:03] genii, he has a non-english (es) keyboard layout [02:03] Damn, no idea then [02:03] me either [02:04] carlis, the key says "- -" .... only one on top the other...not side by side [02:07] ok [02:09] carlis, you get the right key now? [02:12] I am running 9.04. Using ntlmaps at work to get thru isa proxy, and it works great. But when I take my laptop home I cannot use apt-get. I stopped ntlmaps but still it does not work at home. Do I have to uninstall ntlmaps? [02:15] sl do you use different connection types at home and at work? [02:16] Yes at work I go wired connection [02:16] Yes at work I go wired connection at home I use wireless [02:17] then you ***should*** be able to configure wireless to bybass ntlmaps [02:17] Is that easy to do? [02:18] dunno....googling now [02:19] well...that seems simple..... [02:19] you have a wired box @home? [02:20] I have an XP wired box I can use [02:20] i was thinking more along the lines of a server box.... [02:20] oh sorry, no I do not [02:21] cuzz you can configure that so you still proxy but to there, and it translates out to the world =] [02:22] Maybe I could load one in a virtual box and use it that way? [02:22] virutal box on another pc [02:22] pft...set up a proxybox on the lappy [02:23] ya dont neeed much [02:23] I could do that [02:23] =] [02:24] it pays to think outside (or in this case,,,inside) the box [02:24] I have only used xubuntu for a month. When you say server are you talking like a debian server or something else? [02:24] i mean kernel, and the proxy translation [02:24] that should be it [02:25] run it inside a qemu, and you (should be) golden [02:25] Sweet I will start that tonite. [17:48] zoredache: it may be that your camera needs some extra drive or software to actually connect. It doesn't appear like it is going to show up as a disk device [17:49] cougarten, yes you are. [21:23] i rebooted and it was back [22:19] what is the best GUI specification? [22:45] hi. I have a general linux-question, i'm still rather new to it: how do you deinstall application that aren't part of packet-sources? [22:45] in this example: maple or matlab [22:46] markink, open a terminal and type sudo apt-get remove [application] [22:48] martink: they're all parts of a package :) [22:51] well. i dont want to deinstall it now, but my synaptic does not find my maple or matlab [22:52] could this be, because I installed it into my home? [23:12] deinstalling Matlab with sudo apt-get remove matlab doesn't work. [23:13] I know I should have installed it properly, but I did install it into my home dir. [23:13] any idea on how I could deinstall it? [23:13] how did you install it? Usually you need to do the reverse of whatever you did to install [23:14] I started an installer on the disc [23:15] check on the disk and see if there is an unintall script [23:19] or look in the matlab directory on your system perhaps under something like bin and see if there is a script or file named uninstall [23:21] thanks. I would have been too lazy to check the disk. Fould a hint in a documentary there [23:22] and it seems to be gone. good. [23:22] rm -rf matlabroot [23:23] while matlabroot is the path to the directory I installed it to.
