spasticteapotDoes anyone else here have problems with Rhythmbox? Mine refuses to play any songs, similar to when I have no soundcard selected.00:14
knomespasticteapot, does it try to use pulseaudio?00:15
spasticteapotDunno.00:15
spasticteapotIt stopped working a few days after I updated to Jaunty.00:16
spasticteapotI get this error message, for what it's worth: (rhythmbox:13827): Rhythmbox-WARNING **: Unable to grab media player keys: Could not get owner of name 'org.gnome.SettingsDaemon': no such name00:16
spasticteapotSo, nobody knows what's up with my audio?00:34

cody-somervillespasticteapot, Do you get sound from anything else?00:36
spasticteapotEverything else.00:37
spasticteapotVLC, movie player....00:38
cody-somervillespasticteapot, Do you have the appropriate codecs installed?00:39
cody-somervilleie. Can you play the music you're trying to place with another gstreamer based player?00:39
spasticteapotcody-somerville: Possibly not. Which is odd, considering that it worked up until the last round of updates.00:40
spasticteapotFLAC isn't closed-source, so I can't see how that would cause an issue.00:41
cody-somervillespasticteapot, and what were updates are you referring to?00:41
cody-somervilleerrr00:41
spasticteapotThe ones Ubuntu automatically recommended?00:41
cody-somervillespasticteapot, What updates did you get recently?00:41
cody-somervilleThats not helpful00:41
spasticteapotI usually leave the machine on or in sleep mode. There's been dozens.00:41
spasticteapotAt least, since the last time I rebooted.00:42
spasticteapotDo you know where I can find a log of all updates I've downloaded?00:42
cody-somerville /var/log/apt/term.log might have useful info00:42
zoredachels00:42
cody-somervilleand /var/log/dpkg.log00:43
spasticteapotThe only thing that looks remotely relevant is bluez-gstreamer.00:43
spasticteapotAlso, bluez-alsa.00:44
spasticteapotThough I'd presume ALSA is working properly since everything else plays.00:44
cody-somervilleso maybe this has nothing to do with updates?00:46
spasticteapotIt only started after I rebooted, and I've heard of other media players ceasing to function under Jaunty.00:48

SiDithe more i advance the more i'm sure it'll fail19:44
mandragora22lol19:44
Pres-Gasmandragora22, so I see you have the web page for the globalmenu19:45
Pres-Gasmandragora22, you will also need to install xfce4-xfapplet-plugin from the regular repos19:46
Pres-GasThat should get you going, but your miliage may vary19:47
mandragora22so i just apt-get install xfce4-xfapplet-plugin?19:47
Pres-Gasyep19:48
mandragora22ok, done19:49
mandragora22what do i do now?19:49
Pres-GasWell, right click on your panel and select Add New Items.  You should see the xfapplet plugin.  Once you drag it in place, it should then pop up a similar box to select the gnome item you want19:51
mandragora22yes... it's done pres!19:51
mandragora22thanks a lot dude!19:51
Pres-GasNo problem19:51
mandragora22see you all then!19:51

knome!ask | Besogon20:38
ubottuBesogon: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)20:38
Besogonknome, OK. I have burnt DVD-RW, and I cant mount it.20:40

SiDikora: xfce4-session-settings20:46
SiDinormally it should be there20:47
knomeyes, it's moved to session settings20:47
koraahhh alright thanks a lot, i didnt look into session and startup because the only thing to autostart were the gnome/kde libs in the last version20:48
SiDi:)20:48
SiDiyou're welcome kora20:48
Besogonknome, of course I have cdrecord version "Cdrecord-ProDVD-ProBD-Clone 2.01.01a59". May be the problem in it...20:48
knomeBesogon, why a non-default version?20:49
korabtw is there a possibility to get rid of the "create folder / create launcher" menu you get when you right click on your desktop; in my old xfce i had only the part which is now below the application submenu20:49
SiDiyou can't get the old one, alas20:51
SiDibut you can get only the appps20:51
SiDithere's an option for this in Desktop20:51
Besogonknome, I want multisession DVD and "wodim" don't use to do it. ()wodim by default20:51
knomeright20:52
BesogonI going to download last stable release of the cdrecord then. If it not work, I will download Nero in my Windows.20:53
knomeBesogon, did you know there is GUI burners in linux also, you don't need to use cdrecord from the CLI :P20:54
Besogonknome, K3B it is only GUI for cdrecord and Brasero bad work everytime. I used to K3B in ubuntu 7.10. cdrecord very usefull program for me. And fast too...20:56
knomeBesogon, you can use K3B in xubuntu also.20:57
Besogonknome, Iyes I can. But when I use cdrecord I am creating image and cleaning my dvd in one time. I use notepad with standart string to do it. It not hard. (For wodim it worked)20:59
knomeBesogon, i see.21:00
knomeBesogon, however i don't see how windows gui is better than linux gui, but whatever :P21:00
Besogonwodim created non-multisession dvd. Nero is reliables thing. I have Linux only at home. All my frends use WinXP. Nero work better you know21:03
Besogonknome, And What do you use for burn dvd/cd?21:04
knomeBesogon, i don't burn cd's or dvd's21:05
BesogonI dare say k3b )21:05

mandragora22it's a menu bar like the OS X one...21:16
Pres-Gasmandragora22, what is up?21:16
Besogonmandragora22, In xfce you have and use XFCE-menu (I dont know like it be in xfce 4.6, but in xfce 4 it is true).21:17
Pres-GasBesogon, he is a return customer regarding this package: http://code.google.com/p/gnome2-globalmenu/21:19
mandragora22lol21:20
mandragora22That's me21:20
Pres-GasWhat is up, mandragora22?21:20
mandragora22the thing is, now that I've got it installed and running it doesn't show the menu at all21:20
Besogonmandragora22, sorry then21:21
mandragora22it just shows an arrow pointing down21:21
mandragora22when click on it... og21:21
Pres-Gasmandragora22, what happens when you right click on it?21:24
mandragora22when I click the arrow everything appears,21:27

Pres-Gask21:27
mandragora22how do i take a screenshot?21:28
Pres-Gasmandragora22, hit the "print screen" button21:29
mandragora22but it doesn't work if I click the menu21:31
BesogonSee it in menu.21:33
Pres-GasIn "Accessories" there is a screenshot utility...give it a time delay and then click the menu before it takes the shot21:33
mandragora22http://i42.tinypic.com/1605vuu.png21:34
mandragora22that's how it looks21:34

mandragora22http://i40.tinypic.com/15mg51k.png21:35
mandragora22if i just click on the name shows the window actions21:36
mandragora22if I right click shows me the pref panel21:36
Pres-Gasmandragora22, it looks like it is generally doing what you want...but just not across the top of the bar.  I suggest posting to the forums in the code.google.com page21:37
Pres-Gasproject page21:37
Pres-Gassorry21:37
mandragora22Ok then... thanx a lot... going there now.21:38
mandragora22see you. Bye21:38
GandhiHi. I'm having trouble connecting to a wireless WEP network in Ubuntu 9.04 due to an incompatible adaptor, however I have a laptop with Xubuntu Hardy Heron, which works fine. I was wondering if it'd be possible to have the laptop connected to the wireless network, and to this computer via an ethernet cable, acting as a bridge/server(whatever you call it)? Does that seem remotely feasible? Otherwise, as far as I can see, my22:00
SiDiit's doable afaik22:02
SiDiBut i don't know how exactly :p22:02
SiDii fail at setting the DNS when i do this22:03
Gandhiso far I havent come accross anyone who says "sure! That's easy" :s22:03
Gandhireally, I'd need someone to hold my hand through it.22:04
SiDiWell it's basic routing actually ^^ i'm very good at the theoretical part of this, but not at the practical one :)22:05
Gandhioh right, hehe22:05
SiDiIn addition to the laptop's wifi network, you'll have to configure an ethernet network22:05
SiDiyou can do this part with the nm-applet's connection editor22:05
SiDiyou don't really need dhcp for 2 machines22:05
Gandhiwell yeah, insofar as it's "puta here, puta there, router o're yonder" I'm pretty awsome at it too :p22:05
Gandhinm applet, huh.22:06
SiDionce your two machines are connected via ethernet, you need to modify the /etc/resolv.conf files to set the DNS server's IP (i recommand you to use opendns so you dont need to bother22:06
SiDithen you have to change the firewall rules of your laptop to allow external traffic for your desktop :P22:06
SiDiThere *should* be iptables tutorials on the wiki22:07
GandhiHrm. Do you recon this is actually doable? If so, I'll dig the laptop out, connect the wireless adaptor to it, come in here and carry on pesting you.22:07
SiDiI wont be of much help22:07
Gandhiauw22:07
SiDiIt took me several days to configure a router with a lot of tutorials under hand :P22:07
Gandhiarh. But at least you speak the same language.22:08
Gandhisytnatically, that is.22:08
SiDiyeh, but i cant translate iptable to human22:08
SiDii only speak human22:08
GandhiYeh. Otherwise you could just stick the cable in your ear.22:09
SiDihttps://help.ubuntu.com/6.06/ubuntu/serverguide/C/network-configuration.html22:10
Gandhihohum. What to do now. I've more or less given up hope that I could get Ubuntu talking to the WEP network with this adaptor.22:10
SiDihttps://help.ubuntu.com/community/Router22:10
SiDiThese are the two tutorials i needed22:10
GandhiCheers, SiDi. I shall browse.22:10
SiDithe second one rocks :P22:10
Gandhiaight22:10
SiDiThe DHCP/Firewall parts are reasy to do too22:11
SiDithe problem is that a router is meant to always run22:11
SiDiand then you write an init script for your firewall / etc incase of restart22:11
SiDithat doesnt fit much with the usecase of laptops22:11
SiDiGandhi: gonna upload you an archive with some tutorials i grabbed here n there22:13
SiDii cant get you my firewall script cause its on a VM of which i archived the virtual disk :P22:13
Gandhiooh cheers22:13
SiDiwww.2nt.free.fr/host/tmp/Routage.tar.gz Gandhi22:16
SiDitell me when you have it so i can remove it please22:16
Gandhi2I'm really sorry, SiDi, but my connection is messing with me. I missed anything you may have said since the last time I said anything.22:20

Gandhi3Sorry, what are these incantations you're chanting at me?22:25
Gandhi3Some kind of banishment spell?22:25
SiDiit was the idea yeh22:25
J_Litewskilol22:25
Gandhi3Oh right. Well, I'm sure the ghosts are absolutely mortified.22:25
Gandhi3In fact, they're SO scared, they're frozen in place, which is why they havent TIMED OUT yet.22:26
* J_Litewski holds back the impulse to act like an idiot22:26
Gandhi3I'd better say goodbye now, and thanks for the help, in case it happens again (it probably will). Having three ghosts would be too embarassing.22:27
SiDiWell, see you then :P22:32
SiDiJ_Litewski: you shouldnt hold such impulse.22:32
SiDii'd feel less lonely22:32
Firefishe'ello, all. :)  I'm using ubuntu 8.10, and have installed xfce4.  I created a new user recently, and xfce seems to be running fine on that one, using only the xfce window manager, thunar, and such.  However, my normal user--the one I created when I first installed 8.10--although it also uses xfce, it always brings up the gnome icons and uses nautilus as the default file manager.23:02
FirefisheHow can I configure my normal user to use only xfce-based apps when logged into a xfce session?23:03
J_Litewskilol Sidi23:05
SiDiFirefishe: did you only install the xfce package ?23:07
SiDiFirefishe: i think you should install xubuntu-desktop then, it'll add the default xubuntu settings to your xfce session23:07
FirefisheSiDi:  I started with xubuntu-desktop, but I had problems with it even starting up, at first.  I'm running kde 4.2.2, gnome, and xfce4, so who knows what was causing  the login to crash.  My new user works just fine.23:08
FirefisheI uninstalled (purged) all of xfce23:09
Firefisheeverything23:09
Firefisheand then I just did:  sudo apt-get install xfce423:09
SiDiAnother workaround is to set the folders to be opened with thunar :P23:09
SiDierm23:09
SiDiyou should have reinstalled xubuntu instead imo23:09
SiDitry sudo apt-get reinstall xubuntu-default-settings23:10
SiDiand xubuntu-artwork23:10
SiDicompulsory !23:10
FirefisheSiDi:  I tried doing the file manager selection, but it kept defaulting back to Nautilus23:10
Firefisheit wouldn't save the session info23:10
FirefisheI can try those two items and see what goes.  I'm in xubuntu now, so I'd probably want to log out ;)23:11
Firefisheand use kde or something23:11
Firefisheor console, whatevah23:11
Firefishexubuntu-default-settings and xubuntu-artwork?23:11
FirefisheI'll try that and see what happens23:13
FirefisheSiDi: Hi again.  I'm in irssi.  I tried the command sequence:  sudo apt-get reinstall xubuntu-default-settings xubuntu-artwork, and got:  E: Unknown command reinstall23:17
lukinforeyou might mean apt-get install --reinstall23:19
Firefisheah, okay23:20
FirefisheI was thinking it might be a flag, like --purge23:20
Firefishethank you, lukinfore23:20
Firefishe:)..makes me happy as a clam23:20
lukinforewould be great if anyone tell me how to recover broken cd23:23
lukinforeif it even not recognized as media23:23
lukinforewhat target for dd should i use?23:23
SiDisorry Firefishe i'm too used to aptitude's syntax23:25
SiDiFirefishe: about your settings being reset, please chown <yourname> .config -R23:25
SiDifrom shell23:25
FirefisheI just did the following to my system:  sudo apt-get install --reinstall xubuntu-default-settings xubuntu-artwork  |  When I log in, I get a dialog/error box that says I was only able to keep my desktop up for less than ten seconds.  It references my ~/.xsession-error file, pasted here:  http://rafb.net/p/Rwd4oj39.html23:39
FirefisheI have a recently made new user (yesterday) that logs into xubuntu just fine, uses the xfce window manager, file manager, and other desktop settings properly.23:41
tmuraseHow did you login?  Did you choose xfce as your session?23:48
Firefisheyes23:49
FirefisheI use gdm as the manager23:49
FirefisheI have a newly created user that logs in properly.  Gives me what appears, to me, to be the default xfce desktop, with xfce logo/wallpaper, etc.23:50
tmuraseYou moved from gnome to xfce?23:50
Firefishebut when I use my main user--the one I log into gnome, kde 4.2.2, and everything else with, it gives me that error.23:50
FirefisheI'm running both23:50
tmurasehave you tried with the failsafe session?23:50
FirefisheI've run both before in previous versions of ubuntu, with no problem23:50
Firefishetmurase:  yes, I did.  I have one other issue in that arena:  The new user uses normal xfce settings; window manager, thunar for file managment, etc.  When I select xfce and my normal user from gdm--when it allows me to log in--the gnome/nautilus icons are on the xfce desktop.23:52
Firefishesorry, I'23:52
FirefisheI"m typing slow tonight23:52
tmurasefailsafe booted you back to gdm after 10 seconds?23:52
Firefisheno23:52
Firefishenormal login, selecting xfce as session in gdm23:53
tmuraseYou don't have a custom .Xsession on your main user, correct?23:53
viddanyone figure out how to customize the menu yet?23:54
Firefishetmurase:  Not of which I'm aware.  I use gnome and kde 4.2.2 and they work just fine, no x problems.  FluxBox works flawlessly (I"m on it now).  Only xfce and my normal user seem weird.23:54
FirefisheI am using the proprietary driver for my ati card--fglrx--but I wouldn't think that'd do anything23:55
Firefishetmurase:  I seem to have some messages with update-notifier and something about /tmp/orbit-xxx something or other.,23:56
FirefisheIf you looked at that paste of mine, that user is my new user that has no problems23:56
