SilentSoundim having difficulties installing kubuntu on my computer. I downloaded and burned the iso on the kubuntu website to a cd, put it in my comp and restarted, but now all im getting when i click "Start kubuntu live or install" is a black screen00:06
phoenixzCan I say that Kubuntu 9.04 has been one great disappointment please?00:06
phoenixzI love linux, love ?ubuntu00:06
xjjkphoenixz: eh?00:06
phoenixzbut 9.04 realy is ridiculous00:06
Walzmynhas anybody here used the PPA for kde 4.2.3?00:06
xjjkphoenixz: have we chatted about this before...00:06
phoenixzxjjk: crashes, instabilities, problems, etc...00:06
Walzmyntry some specifics phoenixz00:07
phoenixzxjjk: partially :)00:07
zerothisire was in hardy but is source package only in jaunty? How does one install a source package in synaptic or CLI?00:07
firsmSilentSound: Same here, the nv driver is pretty buggy and didn't work with my card. Use the alternate cd and make sure to have it not use nv when starting up the first time00:07
zerothisphoenixz: agreed, I blame KDE 400:07
phoenixzWalzmyn: Where to start... I just installed kubuntu on various other machines..00:07
xjjkzerothis: on the CLI, it's apt-get source <package-name>00:07
phoenixzkpackagekit, won't work stable for about 2.5 minutes...00:07
WalzmynI've had file system problems- had to fsck and reinstall. but it seems to be working fine with not useing the 4.2.3 PPA00:07
xjjkphoenixz: perhaps... kpackagekit is pretty lame in my opinion already00:08
* xjjk uses aptitude00:08
phoenixzbasically, you can't use it to install stuff because it will crashbefore it finishes and since installing stuff is like.. basic, its useless00:08
kyle_kubuntu or Vector or linux dream?00:08
mandingoceohey does anyone know what drivers i need to make the remote work that plugs into the hvr-160000:08
phoenixzxjjk: There was adept, whcih had its things, but it rocked.. the stuff they came up with next was lame..00:08
xjjkWalzmyn: what does FS problems and the KDE 4.2.3 PPA have to do with each other?00:08
phoenixzquassel keeps hogging CPU00:09
phoenixzGraph artifacts all over the place00:09
xjjkphoenixz: perhaps...00:09
SilentSoundfirsm: I have also a cd for kubuntu 6.06 which i believe is dapper, but it wont install. I click install and it... just dies.(the install i mean)00:09
xjjkphoenixz: I guess we come from different camps00:09
xjjkI already have a selection of apps I use00:09
phoenixzjust having it stand there.. doing nothing.. and I see crash after crash of various services..00:09
xjjkand whatever Kubuntu changes as "desktop defaults" doesn't affect me much00:09
xjjkI still use aptitude, and I still use konversation (even though it's still a KDE3 app)00:09
firsmSilentSound: Well the install cd is ridicolous, it doesn't even provide LVM; I recommend the alternate00:10
Walzmynxjjk: i've no idea, that's why i was saking if anybody else had tried to use it00:10
mandingoceohey does anyone know what drivers i need to make the remote work that plugs into the hvr-160000:10
ahmoshi i compiled and installed nvclock ,how i can uninstall it?00:10
phoenixzxjjk: well, I try to show off kubuntu.. I install it with co-workers, claiming its stable, efficient, beautiful.. it used to be all that until 9.04...00:10
firsmphoenixz: I seriously recommend xfce/xubuntu00:10
phoenixzjust a standard install won't even let me finish updates before ... crash..00:10
SilentSoundfirsm: whats the alternate?00:10
zerothisapt-get source is 'Unable to find a source package'. How dangerous is it to install from pre-jaunty repos?00:10
zerothisfirsm: here here!00:11
phoenixzfirsm: Personally, Im a KDE fan.. :) though this crap is really pushing me00:11
firsmSilentSound: It's an alternate installation CD without Xorg that let's you do more stuff00:11
phoenixzAll my friends who use linux report problems.. mainly crashes, X freezes, even kernel panics.. what the hell happened?00:11
firsmphoenixz: Linux has become cool. :p00:11
phoenixzsure, I use 3rd party repos, fine, blame me... but the rest doesn't and they have the same problems..00:11
SilentSoundfirsm: where do i get somethin like thad?00:11
phoenixzfirsm: In that case, I like it hot...00:12
phoenixzIs there anything known about these problems? Im really not the only one here, but I don't see any publications about it..00:12
firsmSilentSound: http://de.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-releases/kubuntu/jaunty/ for example.00:12
phoenixzAlso, this is not an isolated package that has problems.. its all over the place..00:13
BluesKajjust installed Jaunty kde3.5 Remix ...just like the old days ! :)00:13
SilentSoundwait, is there a way to install it from the blackscreen im getting? Im using the latest live cd and all that loads is this thing similar to windows cmd00:13
* Walzmyn shakes his head at BluesKaj00:13
firsmSilentSound: probably if you use different drivers for your video card, but not sure if you do that with the install CD.00:13
firsmSilentSound: s/if you do that/how you do that00:14
calvinHallo, ich möchte ein Film (1080p) hier schauen, aber leider laggt es sehr doll! Was kann man tun?00:14
phoenixzsound problems too.. phonon - pulse audio is dead here... friend of mine has audio completely dead.. X problems are seen at at least 5 different computers, laptops, desktops, etc.. again, since 9.0400:15
firsmphoenixz: Yes audio is a mess on linux, I recommend removing pulse which seems to fix 90% of the problems.00:15
BluesKajWalzmyn: jaunty kde4 was badly broken on my setup, freezes and crashes , unrecognized HW ..this works , to hell with the kde4 eye candy00:15
zerothispulseaudio sucks in all *buntus00:17
BluesKajWalzmyn: jaunty alpha nad beta were much more stable than the final release00:17
SilentSoundwhats the latest stable release?00:17
phoenixzCant we please just fix the basics first, before running off to new stuff? We have the coolest desktop 3d effects ever, best apps, etc.. but sound still is a joke, wifi works if you pray to the penguin, etc..00:17
firsmphoenixz: haha, my system freezes regularly when not blacklisting ath5k.00:17
hagabakathose are worked on by different people and most of them don't work for ubuntu00:17
phoenixzSilentSound: AISI, 8.10 was the latest STABLE release...00:18
zerothisactually, I havn't had any WiFi problems since hardy00:18
kyle_phoenix ur having audio problems?00:18
SilentSoundphoenixz: ty00:18
firsmWhat problems is he not having? :-)00:18
phoenixzhagabaka: agreed.. but how is it that since 9.04 suddenly so many diferent systems are failing all thogether?00:18
phoenixzkyle_: too.. and Im not the only one.00:18
hagabakano idea, sound still works fine for me, and i don't use wifi00:19
phoenixzfirsm: Yeah, Im rabling right now but its just incredible.. I saw my beloved kubuntu fall from its tower, flat on its face..00:19
phoenixzanother thing.. I still only have like.. the 10 most basic plasma widgets.. Where the hell are the new ones?00:19
phoenixzor, how do I install them? I've installed everything related to plasma, but nothing.. Which makes network configuration a bit difficult to say the least :)00:20
kyle_try the gnome alsa mixer00:20
kyle_my audio wasnt working at all00:20
kyle_every since i got that its been perfect00:20
SilentSoundis there a way to install the latest one from the console its giving me?00:20
SilentSound(live cd)00:20
firsmkyle_: the gnome alsa mixer eats 100% cpu here00:21
kyle_what?00:21
kyle_how?00:21
firsmkyle_: don't know, maybe related to having multiple soundcards00:21
phoenixzkyle_: yeah but.. isnt it a bit weird that I have to install the GNOME audio mixer for stuff to work? :)00:21
kyle_its been perfect to me00:22
kyle_yeh well that slinux a free head ache00:22
kyle_i love it though00:22
zerothisformer WiFi problems were: Laptop built-in card not supported. Replacement PCMICA card not supported. 2nd replacement PCMICA card not supported. 3rd replacement PCMICA card not supported. USB WiFi not supported. 2nd Laptop built-in card not supported. 3rd Laptop built-in card not supported. 4th Laptop built-in card not supported. Compile 54 libraries, modules, and apps, ahh haa! Wifi works, B only. Update, Wifi quits working. 00:23
BluesKajwell, I hope the devs at canonical and elsewhere who are working on the next release , decide to reflect a bit on the direction this OS is going , because it's running with one flat tire right now and they better slow down , stop and fix this flat  before going any further >00:26
BluesKajbbiab , gonna config wifi00:27
=== Paraselene__ is now known as Paraselene_
xjjkphoenixz: sorry, back00:29
xjjkmissed the discussion00:29
phoenixzxjjk: can you see the history?00:30
xjjkphoenixz: reading through it now...00:30
phoenixzxjjk: anyway... my basic question is.. what happened? its not one service or system that has problems, they are all over the place.. Its also not just me, Ive seen many differnt people.. audio problems is common, X problems (freezes!) are very common.. All of this happened with 9.04, so what happened?00:31
kyle_just classify it as a beta version of the new release00:31
xjjkphoenixz: most of this is really well known00:32
xjjkaudio problems: pulseaudio00:32
xjjkway too new... probably should not have been put in ubuntu/kubuntu so soon00:32
xjjkX problems, *ESPECIALLY* with Intel graphics00:32
phoenixzxjjk: correct, phonon tells me pulse is not working.00:32
xjjkthere has been major, major changes with the Intel X driver00:32
kyle_its all good its still a good os00:32
xjjkand in the Linux kernel, with regards to graphics00:32
Walzmynanybody know if these problems are ubuntu as a whole, or just kubuntu?00:32
phoenixzxjjk: intel graphs also true00:32
xjjkDRI2 and what not00:32
xjjkmisc. X problems, also due to Xorg 1.600:33
kyle_seems to kubuntu only00:33
phoenixzWalzmyn: so far, its *ubuntu AFAIK00:33
* Walzmyn nods00:33
xjjkWalzmyn: sorry ,which problems00:33
phoenixzkyle_: pulseaudio actually is a ubuntu audio system, is it not?00:33
xjjkphoenixz: really, it's endemic to all Linux distributions using this selection of software00:33
kyle_i have no idea00:33
xjjkyou'll get the same problems with Fedora or Gentoo00:33
phoenixzwhat xjjk says..00:33
kyle_i just know i had ubuntu 2 weeks ago and had less problems00:34
phoenixzIts just weird that all of this gets together like this..00:34
phoenixzmakes it very hard for me to convince people to switch to linux :)00:34
kyle_linux is hard to get used to00:34
kyle_tkaes some time to figure things out00:34
xjjkphoenixz: all in all, 9.04 has been the best release in a while IMHO00:35
kyle_but all the resources you will need00:35
xjjk8.10 I thought was terrible, mostly because of the KDE3/KDE4 kludginess going on00:35
phoenixzkyle_: thats my experience too yeah.. a few weeks ago, it was all cool and riding the waves like ever.. Now I fear an X freeze or other problem around every corner, doenst make for great user experience :)00:35
xjjk8.04 was OK but not as good as 6.06 was00:35
phoenixzkyle_: its really not htat hard with just some basic guidance.. it does get hard when things just don't work..00:35
phoenixzxjjk: 8.10 actually worked out quite fine for me00:36
Walzmynxjjk: i was refering to everything phoenixz is complaining about00:36
kyle_yuppers... but everything can be figured out00:36
xjjkWalzmyn: it's not really *ubuntu-specific00:36
ign0ramusintel issues are *so* much better if you use the (unsupported) 2.6.30-020630rc5 kernel and a few other tweaks00:36
phoenixzkyle_: X freezes? audio problems like that? :) not good..00:36
Walzmynxjjk: yeah, i'm sorta keeping up with the discussion :)00:36
ign0ramusreally the only thing that kept me on Jaunty00:37
phoenixzIf Linux / ubuntu wants to be able to get accepted by common users, this stuff really can not happen00:37
xjjkign0ramus: do they have a PPA or something that rebuilds linux-restricted-modules and what not for 2.6.3000:37
ign0ramusxjjk, yeah, its the 'xorg-edgers' ppa00:37
geniiPart of it is everyone rushes to install the intermediate versions between LTS, when these are basically testing ground versions00:37
phoenixzign0ramus: Im listening.. where do I get that kernel?00:37
xjjkign0ramus: ah, cool... didn't know the kernel was in there00:37
ign0ramusphoenixz, hang on tutorial coming00:37
xjjkgenii: I'm not sure whether that makes a difference...00:38
ign0ramusrc5 just came out today -- http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=113058200:38
xjjka problem here is that Ubuntu focuses around time-based releases00:38
Walzmyngenii: I wanted to stay on the LTS, but there was so much software that was not gettin gupdated that I wanted to use00:38
xjjkfor non and LTS releases00:38
phoenixzign0ramus: I also read about a PPA where there was a new kernel that has kernel mode switching or something, which also had updated intel drivers AND should be a lot more stable..00:38
phoenixzign0ramus: is that the same one?00:38
xjjkother distributions have a "when it's ready" attitude00:38
xjjkor are rolling, like arch/gentoo00:39
ign0ramusphoenixz, i don't know anything about kernel mode switching :/00:39
Walzmynxjjk: yeah, like debian, which has a new version every decade?00:39
ZengolIs there a way to restore GRUB after a different OS whiped it out?00:39
phoenixzxjjk: sure, I can imagine.. but then they need to make simple decisions.. is it ready? great, we take it.. not ready ? next release! These intel drivers are a joke and should never have been used.. they should have stayed a kernel behind then if needed..00:39
xjjkWalzmyn: Debian is sort of both, IMHO...00:39
xjjk"stable" is released-oriented, "testing" and "sid" are rolling00:40
ign0ramusi keep my 2.6.28-12-generic just in case, but the rc4 & rc5 have been running great with no breakage on my system00:40
xjjklike arch/gentoo00:40
xjjkthat said00:40
Walzmynxjjk t'was making a joke00:40
xjjkI don't know *anyone* who uses Debian stable00:40
Walzmynnot for the desktop, it's a server release00:40
xjjkWalzmyn: even for servers00:41
xjjkall my servers use Debian testing00:41
xjjkDebian's own servers use Debian testing00:41
* Walzmyn shrugs00:41
ign0ramusZengol, a little old, but still works : http://odzangba.wordpress.com/2007/03/10/how-to-restore-grub-using-the-ubuntu-live-cd/00:41
Walzmyni don't run servers00:41
geniiWandering offtopic00:41
xjjkWalzmyn: generally, it's similar to desktops... you don't want to be running old cruddy software00:41
xjjkyou accept software a little bit older00:41
xjjkbut not years old00:42
Walzmynxjjk: makes sence00:42
Zengolign0ramus: I just found an option in System Setting's tha let's me restore GRUB to different partition's or drive's.00:42
Walzmynwhat is that magic package I can never find that makes dolphin show video previews?00:42
Zengolign0ramus: Thank's anyway though man.00:42
xjjkphoenixz: decisions on what kernel/software to use are made pretty early on in development cycle00:42
xjjkthey're not going to revert to a previous version because the current doesn't work00:43
ign0ramusZengol, no problem... i didn't even know that was an option now00:43
xjjkthat makes all the work the developers did mostly a waste of time00:43
zerothisphoenixz: as to what happened, Pulse audio happened two releases ago. KDE 4 comes from other teams that do not consult Ubuntu people. X.org is also another team, and lots of Linux distros have been effected by their decisions. For instance, they simply dropped support for a huge range of Intel cards. The drivers for newer cards have basic functionality, so they *removed* the drivers for older cards. X.org did a lot of great th00:43
xjjkphoenixz: and the problem with the "wait till stuff is stable" mantra... is where do you cut the line00:43
Zengolign0ramus: It's in System Setting's > Advanced > GRUB Editor.00:43
xjjkon what holds a release and what doesn't00:43
Zengolign0ramus: GRUB Editor > Tool's.00:44
ign0ramusZengol, cool.  good to know.  livecds are always good in a pinch, too ;)00:44
Zengolign0ramus: Yeah, that's what i was abotu to do, it will let me re-write the MBR using GRUB.00:44
ign0ramusZengol, you must have a specific package installed, as i don't have that option00:44
Zengolign0ramus: I'm using Intrepid if that help's.00:45
ign0ramusZengol, that may be it.  i skipped intrepid entirely...00:45
ign0ramusI waited for "stable" kde ;-)00:45
Zengolign0ramus: I could not use 9.04, I am running an Intel chipset and it does not like it very well.00:45
ign0ramusZengol, that's what i have, and it's pretty snappy after a ton of workarounds and hacks!00:46
phoenixzzerothis: xjjk: These are explanations htat I can use :) thanks.. the thing is just, bad coincidence then I guess.. becuase every new release has a few problems, but this time it was like a waterfall of big bad problems.00:46
zerothisThe Intell card problems are the result of X. Perhaps kubuntu's other problems are aggravating them. But believe me, I've had equal troubles in xubuntu and ubuntu. Even Virtualised Haiku has got some weird things going wrong with the graphics, I'm starting to suspect they use org00:46
ign0ramusaverage cpu load is still like 22% on idle (X mostly)00:46
xjjkphoenixz: if you're going to show off Ubuntu, it may be best to show off an LTS release00:46
xjjkall the major problems with it are fixed by now00:46
phoenixzxjjk: Whats the latest LTS release?00:47
xjjkphoenixz: 8.0400:47
genii8.0400:47
ZengolI'll stick with 8.10 It work's very well for me so far.00:47
ign0ramusphoenixz, was Kubuntu 8.04 considered 'lts'?00:47
xjjkor stick with whatever the last release worked for you00:47
phoenixzxjjk: today I installed it with a co-worker to show eucalyptus, which in 9.04 is part of the repos.. I wanted to show him how easy it is and well.. that was a disappointment :)00:47
ign0ramusi've heard conflicting reports that only Ubuntu was lts... :/00:47
kyle_well guys im going to check out Vector a linux OS and if its any good im going to get rid of kubuntu00:48
phoenix__shitt00:48
xjjkphoenix__: bleh00:48
phoenixzign0ramus: xjjk: AFAIK, Kubuntu 8.04 is NOT LTS, only ubuntu, thanks to KDE 4 :P00:48
xjjkphoenixz: sorry, that's right00:48
ign0ramusphoenixz, that's what i was told.00:48
geniiphoenixz: Please watch the profanities :)00:48
zerothisAnd somthing else. Some of us who have been using Linux since the begining have experienced real hard times. Recent linux history with its overall success, may have spoiled us and we forgot where we came from00:48
xjjkthanks for the correction00:48
phoenixzgenii: Profanities? where?00:48
ign0ramuszerothis, i will agree things are much easier now, but it's wrong for certain foundations to promote their distros as 'primetime ready' when they are clearly not00:50
geniiphoenixz: Apologies on premature tab-complete00:50
phoenixzgenii: Hehe, NP00:50
mandingoceohey does anyone know what drivers i need to make the remote work that plugs into the hvr-160000:51
ZengolOk, time to try and restore GRUB.00:51
phoenixzign0ramus: amen to that.. :) its kind of like the KDE4.0 discussions.. sure, 4.0 was like nice as an alpha, but it was released as "done" which it was clearly not..00:51
ign0ramusphoenixz, i don't mind doing some hacking on my own, but i feel bad for others that are lulled into certain distros, thinking that everything will just work00:52
ign0ramusphoenixz, most blogs on Linux are now Ubuntu blogs, and always proclaim how superior it is.  It is a fine distro and Linux is great, but these authors are not giving the entire picture, which can really mislead people new to Linux.00:53
phoenixzign0ramus: exactly.. I myself many times try bleeding edge stuff... most of the time it works, but I can't have my mom encounter this stuff, she will panic..00:54
ign0ramusphoenixz, my dad, same thing... and (wait for it...) he's a coloniel!00:54
* ign0ramus groans at his own lame pun00:54
phoenixzign0ramus: actually, I have my parents on ubuntu now.. lots less trouble then windows, but they're on 8.04 and the way I see it, they can stay there for a little while longer..00:54
phoenixzign0ramus: coloniel?00:55
ign0ramusphoenixz, *colonel00:55
ign0ramusthat doesn't look right, either :/00:56
ign0ramusin any event, it was a lame pun "colonel panic".  i FAIL.00:57
ign0ramusphoenixz, but yeah, 8.04 was my favorite release so far (i started on feisty), but i had to try kde4.00:58
davidjheinrichwhy the hell did Kubuntu include Amorak 2.0?00:58
SilentSoundwhats 8.1 called?00:58
davidjheinrichAmorak 2.0 freaking sucks00:58
SilentSoundor .04 or w/e00:58
phoenixzdavidjheinrich: there we have another discussion.. :)00:58
ign0ramusSilentSound, 8.10 is intrepid ibex00:58
SilentSoundty00:58
kaddidavidjheinrich: preach it :)00:58
davidjheinrichAmorak 1.4 was the easiest thing to use; 2.0, wtf?00:59
ign0ramusyou can install amarok 1.4 again... i did. amarok2 SUCKS.00:59
phoenixzHonestly, i'll take Amarok 1.4 too..00:59
davidjheinrichI can't even get my music to play on 2.0!00:59
kaddidavidjheinrich and it can't even play CDs00:59
xjjkign0ramus: is there a good repo for that/00:59
kaddilol, that's worse XD00:59
davidjheinrichwhat the hell were the Amarok devs hinking? NOTHING was wrong with it -- it was fine00:59
SilentSoundso kubuntu is good for running website00:59
ign0ramusxjjk, yup.  let me check my /etc/apt/sources.list00:59
SilentSoundright?00:59
phoenixzSilentSound: sure01:00
davidjheinrichI don't understand why they screwed up the interface -- why mess with perfection?01:00
phoenixzSilentSound: I use it as a production server for our php based intranet system... works flawlessly01:00
phoenixzdavidjheinrich: I feel kind of the nero effect on Amarok 2...01:00
SilentSoundphoenixz: that was a lot of squigles to me, but i saw the word server lol01:00
davidjheinrichphoenixz, what's the nero effect?01:00
ign0ramusxjjk, Amarok 1.4 for all again! https://launchpad.net/~bogdanb/+archive/ppa01:00
phoenixzdavidjheinrich: Must do new interface, must...upgrade... new... change... so that people keep buying our cr#p...01:01
SilentSoundphoenixz: all i want to do is run a website. and host my own dns...01:01
ign0ramusxjjk, also, if anyone's interested, i found a great ppa for VLC that runs in a *single window*01:01
phoenixzSilentSound: yes, it can be a web server too... better?01:01
xjjkign0ramus: I use smplayer (and love it), so no matter there01:01
davidjheinrichphoenixz: yea, lol, what a joke....as if the 2.0 interface is better...just looking at it blows01:02
ign0ramusxjjk, i take it that it is a frontend for mplayer, yes?01:02
* phoenixz feels the need to browse these PPA's from launchpad a bit more for cool stuff01:02
xjjkphoenixz, davidjheinrich, ign0ramus: I think the Amarok 2 devels meant well... Amarok 2.1 is supposed to be a lot better01:02
kaddiand 2.2 will even play CDs :D01:02
silviuy'en a t-il un qui parle francais?01:02
xjjkign0ramus: yes01:02
xjjkje ne parle pas francais01:02
kaddi!fr |silviu01:02
ign0ramusxjjk, i actually frequent #amarok from time to time, and they're generally good devs, but i think they're pissed about everyone bitching01:02
ubottusilviu: Ce canal est en anglais uniquement. Si vous avez besoin d'aide ou voulez discuter en francais, merci de rejoindre #ubuntu-fr01:02
davidjheinrichis 2.1 avail now as an update?01:02
xjjkdavidjheinrich: no, it's still in beta01:03
phoenixzdavidjheinrich: that was the point... :) Ever seen the windows nero cd/dvd burning suite? it used to rock.. but then everybody had it and they wanted to sell again so... must make new user interface.. weather it sucks or not doesnt matter..01:03
phoenixzxjjk: its it available anywhere at all?01:03
xjjkI'm sure there's a PPA or something01:03
ign0ramusAlthough the devs in #amarok told me they do not plan on integrating MusicBrainz into Amarok2 at all.  I need that.01:03
davidjheinrichign0ramus, yea, well, I can't blame people for bitching at Am devs...it was perfect01:03
xjjkign0ramus: oh? why so01:03
silviuhello01:04
davidjheinrichwho's selling amarok anyways?01:04
ign0ramusxjjk, why do i need musicbrainz, or why are they not including it?01:04
kaddi!hi|silviu :)01:04
ubottusilviu :): Hi! Welcome to #kubuntu!01:04
xjjkign0ramus: why are they not including it01:04
ign0ramusxjjk, from the team: "No MusicBrainz, but we have plans for something better. Stay tuned :)"01:05
xjjkign0ramus: mmm... OK...01:05
xjjkign0ramus: that sort of echoes what I was saying01:05
ign0ramusxjjk, what's that exactly?01:05
davidjheinrich<rant> I feel like grabbing the devs of amarok and shaking them </rand>01:05
davidjheinricherr, </rant>01:06
xjjkign0ramus: I'm sure the Amarok devs meant well01:06
mandingoceodoes any1 have an hvr-1600 capture card working01:06
xjjkbut given limited time, you can only do so much01:06
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, i think amarok2 will be much better, but it was a BAD idea to include it by default01:06
xjjkamarok2.0 is akin to kde4.001:06
ign0ramussongbird is even more stable and robust... sheesh01:06
davidjheinrichyea, I guess it's more Kubuntu's fault for including it01:07
=== mike is now known as Guest46779
kaddixjjk types quicker than me XD... I was going to point out kde4.1 in intrepid :P01:07
davidjheinrichafter all, they're trying to rework it, and it's a WIP01:07
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, you can always talk to the guys in #amarok, they're pretty cool if you don't come in complaining :)01:07
=== Guest46779 is now known as azmike
davidjheinrichwhat I'm curious about is what happened to the old ("iTunes-like") interface, are they bringing that back? where do you even see lists of what's ian album? why is "Last Played" taking up the entire pane in he middle01:08
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, the middle pane is eventually going to be much more usable, and it's also where all current scripts (like for lyrics) are displayed01:09
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, that said, i still find it instrusive and ugly :/01:09
davidjheinrichyea, me too01:09
ign0ramusit seems since kde4, many native apps have lost the whole "you can make your own configuration" ideal, which is sad01:10
ign0ramusis there a way to even resize icons on the panel?01:11
Walzmynign0ramus: I don't think so yet.01:11
ign0ramusi don't need them Windows7-huge... i hope there's a way around that too01:11
ign0ramuswhat about the little arrow that used to hide the panel?  can we do that, or is it 'auto-hide' only?01:12
Walzmynauto only i believe01:12
ign0ramuswhat drew me to kde was the control it gave over the UI, and much of that is gone.  i know kde4 is still new, but i really hope these options return01:13
davidjheinrichimo, it seems like they're trying to push for too much too fast01:13
Walzmynign0ramus: they're working on putting htem back in01:13
ign0ramusWalzmyn, good to hear.01:13
davidjheinrichlike Quassel instead of Konversation....b/c hey wnat everything Qt401:13
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, i have qt4 Konversation ;)01:14
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, tbh, i didn't even really give quassel a chance, but it didn't suit me, so i went and got the kde4 port (svn) of Konversation.  Much happier now :)01:14
kaddihe's so shocked he leaves :o01:15
ign0ramushaha01:15
* kaddi hast qt4 konversatin as well :)01:15
ign0ramuswell, he can "Chat comfortably.  Anywhere" if he so chooses :)01:15
kaddiand i love it :)01:15
ign0ramuskaddi, the only thing i'm missing is the right-click on a nick options in the chat pane01:16
ign0ramuskaddi, other than that, everything is beautiful01:16
kaddididn't even know that existed, till now :D01:16
davidjheinrichwhy doesn't sudo install amarok14 work for me?01:17
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, do you have the ppa listed in /etc/apt/sources.list?01:17
kaddiwhat I'm missing, (but I never got round suggesting it, so I#01:17
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, and you're missing an "apt-get" in there too01:17
davidjheinrichyea, I put that in when typed in term, just missed in here01:17
davidjheinrichwhat is a ppa?01:17
Walzmyndavidjheinrich: it's a private repo where folks put stuff that's not in the regular repos yet01:18
kaddiwhat I'm missing, (but I never got round suggesting it, so I'm not complaining ;) ) is a auto identify that works with auth :)01:19
davidjheinrichso what do I add to his file?01:19
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, tutorial here: http://nomad.ca/blog/2009/apr/3/amarok-14-jaunty-ubuntu-904/01:19
SilentSoundi officially hate live cds01:19
ign0ramusSilentSound, those are some strong words01:19
Walzmyni officially love live CDs - they let ya do so much you can't do with winders01:20
ign0ramuskaddi, there's probably a bash script you can run on startup that will accomplish that for you01:20
ign0ramuskaddi, *on Konversation startup01:20
SilentSoundi know, but i find them so slow xD01:21
ign0ramusSilentSound, you're living in memory!01:21
SilentSound??01:21
kaddii just added /auth name password as "command" on server-connection, but it took me a while to understand why auto identify wasn't working ;)01:21
davidjheinricharg, that tutorial sucks01:21
davidjheinrichit's exposing the screen tearing bug problem with the radeonhd drivers01:21
davidjheinrich1st webpage I've seen tearing on01:22
ign0ramusSilentSound, you're depending on reading from a disc and working in memory to do anything.  of course it's slow01:22
SilentSoundlol i c01:22
SilentSoundi know its slow, but its still annoying... i do suppose they are really useful though01:22
ign0ramusdavidjheinrich, do you know how to add ppa's and keys, then update and upgrade?  that's all it really is...01:22
ign0ramusSilentSound, *very* useful, especially for your windows 'friends' who totally borked their system01:23
SilentSoundlol very true01:23

tzangerle sigh.  I think KDE4 was a real mistake for 9.0401:23
davidjheinrichI got the site working01:23

SilentSoundim new, so im going to ask what is probably a common, nooby question: Can I run windows programs on linux? i.e. games or things like sony vegas01:24

SilentSoundah ok01:26
tzangerign0ramus: I use it for the iphone and for mplab and also for my USB data logger01:26
ign0ramusSilentSound, there are tuts out there how to run like WoW or whatever in wine, but it's a lot of hacking01:26

tzangerif I was watching a full 32 bit bus or something sure, but 99% of my work is telephony or little stuff01:27
tzangerign0ramus: lots of things01:27
tzangerindustrial stuff, telephony stuff, etc01:28
ign0ramustzanger, i always think of like cash registers for some reason, but i know there's much MUCH more..01:28
tzangeryes cash registers are embedded01:28
ign0ramustzanger, is it true that almost all embedded systems use some variant of Linux?01:28

trappistcuriouscuz: cool, where do I find it03:56
trappistyes, I figured out the wlan0 thing03:56
trappistbut can't bring it up03:56
curiouscuzand KNetworkManager is replaced with Network Manager widget for plasma03:56
trappistfixed up /etc/network/interfaces03:56
trappistoh a plasma widget... cuz I looked for network-manager etc.03:56
trappistlemme see if I can find that...03:57
coleysOkay is amarok my best choice for music ? It seems to crap out to much >_>04:00
trappistok this is starting to look a lot better, but I click on my AP (in the plasma widget) and enter my wep key etc. and click ok... it doesn't connect, and if I open it again the info I just entered isn't there04:00
curiouscuzi've had good luck with amarok... Amarok 2 looks more stable too in Jaunty04:01
afeijokaddi suggested jhead to rename my photos, what about videos?04:01
curiouscuztrappist as a temporary fix, KNetworkManager should still work if you havent uninstalled it04:02
curiouscuzjust Alt+F2 and type KNetworkManager and hit enter04:02
trappistI'll try it...04:02
trappistI never explicitly uninstalled it, but it's not installed04:03
curiouscuzhmm...04:03
trappistmy wlan0 just shows disconnected, and nothing happens if I click on it.  is that to be expected?04:03
curiouscuzdoes ath0 show in ifconfig ?04:04
trappistso I click on the AP and try to set it up, but when I click OK, nothing appears to happen (except the window disappears) and it doesn't connect and it doesn't keep the info04:04
trappistno04:04
curiouscuzok...04:04
trappistwell, let me double-check... been a long time since I had to run back and forth like this :)04:04
curiouscuzit took me a while too... what do you get with uname -a command?04:04
curiouscuzmy upgrade did not add correct grub entry and i didnt realise until a week later that i was booting into an older kernel04:05
trappist2.6.28-11, matches the newest kernel in /boot04:06
trappistand no, no ath004:06
curiouscuzgood.. thats the latest04:06
trappistdo I need to modprobe a new driver for the atheros chipset?04:07
trappistor is it the ath5k thing now?04:07
curiouscuztry this... go to K -> System Settings -> Network Preferences04:07
trappistk04:07
curiouscuzthere you should see Network Manager as the bottom most section04:07
curiouscuzgo to Wireless tab04:08
curiouscuzand click Add buttom from the right hand corner04:08
afeijowho use jhead cmd??04:08
trappistok my AP was listed there several times, probably from all the times I entered the wep info, but none of them had connect automatically checked.04:10
trappistit seems to stick if I check it there, but it still doesn't appear to try to connect, so I'm rebooting to see if that'll get it to connect when kde starts up.04:10
curiouscuztrappist: delete all those entries04:10
trappistyeah I did04:10
curiouscuzadd one manually04:10
trappistor, all but one, then I added the details to that last one04:10
curiouscuztry fresh04:11
trappistblech.  ok if it's not working after the reboot I'll try that.04:11
curiouscuzok...04:11
trappistbut is there something for me to click (or type) to force it to attempt to connect, and show me an error message if it fails?04:11
trappistI'm used to using the command line for all this, but all that stuff is failing on me04:11
curiouscuzwell, it all worked for me with out any issues04:12
curiouscuzyou may try one thing as a last resort04:12
curiouscuzbut for this make sure you are connected to the ethernet for internet04:12
curiouscuzgo to K -> Applications -04:12
curiouscuzgo to K -> Applications - System -> Hardware Drivers04:13
trappistheh if I could get this box on wired internet without an act of congress, I'd have it that way now for this chat04:13
curiouscuzand activete the wireless madwifi for atheros04:13
curiouscuzthat may bring back ath004:13
curiouscuzbut its inactive for me04:13
trappistwoo, reboot worked!  I'm on the offending box now.  <3 screen.04:15
curiouscuzcool...04:16
curiouscuzso is the widget working for you?04:16
trappistI guess so04:16
curiouscuzyou can drag it and place it on the bottom panel with other icons04:16
trappistI think maybe I modprobed some drivers I shouldn't have, before getting on irc04:17
trappistoh, didn't realize that04:17
curiouscuzi have mine left of the clock04:17
trappistyeah I just put mine there04:18
curiouscuznice... enjoy...04:18
yeoj__i just installed a new sound card and pulse audio is messed up, any tips?  amarok works, but firefox and skype do not04:19
trappistcuriouscuz: anyway thanks a zillioion, that was scary for a second04:19
curiouscuzi know the feeling... my display messed up day before thats when i realised i was a kernel version behind04:20
afeijocan I use jhead to rename my photos, but the numeric sequencer to restart for every new day? it is increasing the number regardless the photo day04:21
dwidmannyeoj__: do you have your system settings->multimedia set up right?04:21
yeoj__dwidmann: i believe so, it worked with my old card04:22
yeoj__wehen i test 'plus audio in' multimedia settings04:22
yeoj__it gives like this static noise04:22
dwidmannyeoj__: best to double check ... if you're using pulseaudio, it needs to be on top of all of the lists (if it isn't, change it in one and apply it to all)04:22
yeoj__but the analog works fine04:22
yeoj__dwidmann: its wierd, sometimes if i mess around with it enough,i break the analog out one04:24
yeoj__it hink alsa is confused by my old card04:24
davidjheinrichhi all, in KDE4, I accidentally removed my task-bar panel...how do I get it back?04:24
yeoj__davidjheinrich: right click on deskto04:24
yeoj__davidjheinrich: unlock widgets,04:24
dwidmannyeoj__: that may be, do you see both in alsamixer?04:24
yeoj__davidjheinrich: then right click again, and select 'add panel'04:25
davidjheinrichthat's just adding a blank panel on the top of the screen04:25
yeoj__dwidmann: no, just the new one04:26
yeoj__dwidmann: i pushed f5 in alsamixer to see all channels04:26
yeoj__dwidmann: there is no option in alsamixer that i see to see 'all devices' or 'other devices'04:26
yeoj__dmesg knows nothing about the old card (obviously)04:26
yeoj__and i removed everything from Hardware Drivers04:26
yeoj__(do i even need pluse for antying?  I really just need flash sound, and skype...)04:27
davidjheinrichhow do  I get back my task bar?04:27
dwidmannyeoj__: pulse does software mixing and stuff like that IIRC ... so you want it if hardware mixing isn't working04:28
dwidmannyeoj__: ie: for playing more than one sound at a time04:28
yeoj__dwidmann: heh, maybe i'll reinstall04:28
yeoj__dwidmann: i swapped a bunch of ocmponents04:29
DragnslcrI have a clean install of 9.04 with just the onboard sound, and I don't get anything from Flash, even though stuff like notifications and Amarok work fine04:29
davidjheinrichcome on, doesn't anyone know how to get back to the DEFAULT KDE panel / task bar?04:30
DragnslcrMost of the stuff I've seen on the forums seems to indicate that the Flash problem is because of pulseaudio04:30
dwidmannDragonath: which browser(s)?04:30
Dragnslcrdavidjheinrich- right-click your desktop and pick Add Panel04:30
Dragnslcrdwidmann- Firefox04:31
DragnslcrSeems to be a pretty common problem04:31
dwidmannsame problem in Konqueror, or no?04:31
DragnslcrHaven't tried04:31
davidjheinrichno, that didn't work04:32
Dragnslcrdwidmann- seems to have the same problem, yeah04:32
davidjheinrichI had to goto Add Widgets > Task Manager04:32
dwidmannDragonath: hmm, it works for me ... so I guess I probably won't be too much help with investigating that04:33

akshayshah3.0 is the current release version, 3.5 is a beta release19:23
akshayshahnope, 3.5 is in the standard repos19:23
SteBoakshayshah: nevertheless it's a beta version19:23
akshayshahinstall them both - I use 3.5 every day, and it handles javascript much faster19:23
smurfsloveri don't want both19:24
SteBosmurfslover: 3.0 ist the stable release19:24
smurfslovermy brother in law gets confused when i do that and it's his laptop :)19:24
smurfsloverthx19:24
akshayshahIt certainly is; at least on my computer, though, 3.0 handles javascript much, much slower19:24
SteBo3.5 won't get security fixes etc.19:24
akshayshahIt does if you enable the daily build PPA, but that's a whole other discussion19:24
SteBoakshayshah: still it's not a final release and isn't as well supported and stable.19:25
smurfslovergonna try the 3.5 and see if it's stable19:25

shock_day13hey everyone21:13
SilentSoundgenii: You where helping me lastnight, so i thought you'd also find it funny that i opened up a currently disfunc comp and found to shiny new sticks of 128mb ram, matching and identical xD21:13
jpedrozaI have been trying to get my Verizon Wireless broadband access USB modem to work with the new Network Manager plasmoid, to no avail. I have added a connection and it shows up in the list of possible connections, but it never connects. It was working fine under knetworkmanager, of course. Is anyone else using the UM150 under 9.04?21:13
=== atom68k is now known as atomekk
geniiSilentSound: So likely it was a case of non-matched sticks in this case21:13
SilentSoundgenii: ya, i think so, because pulling one or the other out fixed the problem21:14
jpedrozaOn a related note, is there any way to make the popup window larger in the Network Manager Plasmoid? It cuts off the lower half of my network connection.21:14
SilentSoundgenii: except now im getting sporadic graphical problems... but only with blackscreenm so i dont think its that much of a problem21:14
geniiSilentSound: Might want to run memtest on the new ram to make sure it's ok21:15
SilentSoundwow, this thing is running great now... so sad all i added was 128 mb ram21:15
SilentSoundgenii: whats a memtest?21:15
geniiSilentSound: memtest is a small utility which does exhaustive testing of your computer memory. On the (k)ubuntu livecd there should be an option to boot to it21:16
SilentSoundoops, im in install wizard... should i restart?21:16
geniiSilentSound: Probably not at this stage. You can run the memtest anytime after as well. It takes quite a while to get some kind of reliable result from it, usually 12 hours or more is good.21:17
SilentSoundgenii: then im probably going to run while im asleep/at school21:18
geniiSilentSound: Good plan.21:19
SilentSoundgenii: this question might cause some groaning ^^: is there a process to adding hardrives? or can i just plug it in and do slave/master in bios and go21:20
geniiSilentSound: Ideally you want to install on whatever the primary IDE(or sata, etc) and master. Then afterwards if you add a drive it won't mess up boot order.21:22
geniiSilentSound: First drive usually will be seen as sda, then sdb sdc and so on. Sometimes the cd/dvd will also occupy one of these of course.21:23
SilentSoundgenii: I believe I have a IDE 8.5gb HD on my secondary ide, because my computer was defaulted to boot from CD before harddrive. Anyways, i just add a drive to next ide or  do slave/master thing?21:24
geniiSilentSound: Add them as you normally would.21:25
geniiSilentSound: I would recommend to specify on pins however one as master one as slave if 2 on same cabling (ide). Sometimes if set to cable-select and one fails it messes up where it thinks the drives are again, etc21:26
