Kermitfan22I added a new Hard Drive today, moved my video files over to it, in the process, I managed to muck things up and fill my primary partition (seperate from my video partition). Now mythtv won't start properly. I did a Database restore, but the backend.log still says that the database is not open. Help?00:22

TechnophilHi, anyone interested in 9400GT PCI video cards here - and mythbuntu07:29
TechnophilSeems using the PCI bus limits the amount of RAM usable when using a 32 bit version.07:32
TechnophilHmmm  Installing 9.04, I need to upgrade from the default 180.44 (that does not support my card fully) to 180.51 that is supposed to...  How does one get synaptic to move nvidia-glx-180 from 180.44 to the latest.  Options are only uninstall and reinstall - which does not upgrade....08:59
darthanubisTechnophil, you can't upgrade to somethign that is NOT there09:00
darthanubisif you want that driver you will either have to wait til it hits the repos, or manual install it yourself from Nvidia09:00
TechnophilOK, I thought it would download it.  Ahhh09:00
TechnophilSo is it ok to do a manual install using the NVIDIA file in mythbuntu?09:01
darthanubisnah, it does not work like that09:01
darthanubisit's ok, so long as you know what you are doing09:01
darthanubisyou will be responsible for the maintence of your video driver then09:01
darthanubisyou have to make sure build-essentials, kernel headers, are installed09:02
darthanubisand you will have to reove everything nvidia from synaptic09:02
TechnophilWell I can uninstall from synaptic....   I am fine about keeping an eye on nvidia for their latest, no doubt they will continue to do releases for the coming months09:02
darthanubisI have a 9500GT09:03
darthanubisthe 180.44 driver is working fine09:03
darthanubisfor me at least09:03
Technophilso which 18x.xx are you running?09:03
TechnophilAhhh  9400GT support NVIDIA say only cam in about 180.5009:04
TechnophilI am getting font issues, for example "c"'s are squares09:04
hadsSounds odd.09:04
darthanubisweird09:04
TechnophilConfirming from the NVIDIA announcements GeForce 9400 GT was first stated as supported with 180.5009:06
darthanubisgo for it!09:07
TechnophilIs build headers "apt-build" in synaptic?09:08
Technophilwoops, build essentials09:08
darthanubisno09:08
darthanubisapt-get install build-essentials linux-headers09:09
darthanubisthat shoudl be enough09:09
Technophiljeez too easy when you know what you're doing!09:09
darthanubisI've done it plenty of times09:09
darthanubiscomes in handy when you run Alpha Ubuntus with broken xorgs09:10
TechnophilSo I remove completely the NVIDIS stuff from synaptic, run your apt and download / run the nvidia installer?09:10
darthanubisyup09:10
TechnophilNothing like bad experiences to learn one...09:10
darthanubisThe Nvidia installer has great text documentation09:10
darthanubisyou'll have to shut down gdm to run the installer09:11
darthanubissudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop09:11
darthanubisdon't bring the gui down until you download the nvidia installer09:11
darthanubisremember where you downloaded it09:12
darthanubisand then chmod a+x on the installer to make it executable09:12
darthanubisall of this is in the installer directions09:12
darthanubisgood luc09:12
darthanubisbrb, out for a smoke09:12
TechnophilWhich one?  NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg0.run  or NVIDIA-Linux-x86-180.51-pkg1.run   ??!09:13
darthanubis???09:13
darthanubiswhy is there two?09:14
darthanubisjust pick either one09:14
Technophilftp://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86/180.51/09:15
Technophilthe *1* is 22M and *0* only 13M09:16
TechnophilOK it says "The file with the highest package number is suitable for most installations" in the readme09:17
Technophilso its 109:18
darthanubisWAIT!09:18
Technophilso I guess one is an earlier version?09:18
darthanubisI found somethign you'll like09:18

darthanubisjust add to synaptic repos list, then reload, then mark updates09:20
darthanubisnvidia-graphics-drivers-180 (180.53-0ubuntu2) jaunty; urgency=low09:21
TechnophilHow about that, maybe mutual benefit here eh?  So I just add "https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-x-swat/+archive/x-updates" as another repo09:23
darthanubisdeb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main09:24
darthanubisdeb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-x-swat/x-updates/ubuntu jaunty main09:24
darthanubisadd those two lines to the repo portion of synaptic09:24
darthanubisI just did it09:24
Technophilunder 3rd party software?09:25
TechnophilPresumably that will automatically update 180.44 then?09:25
darthanubisyes and yes09:25
darthanubisupdating mine right now09:26

darthanubis"what technology are you pulling down?"? I don't understand?09:31
darthanubisdriver updated without a hitch09:32
TechnophilWell at a guess I'd say you are not using DVB-T09:33
darthanubisto be sure I 'll have to reload the driver, adn that would mean rebooting or reinserting the kernel driver, which I don't want to do rightnow09:33
darthanubisno09:33

darthanubisI like your spirit, but you are not advanced enough for this project.09:54
FPSDavidis it really that hard to tell me what command to run so i can copy my files and start over on the other drive09:54
darthanubisYou are trying to add a spare drive to copy your media over to it before a cleaninstall.09:55
darthanubisYes, it is09:55
FPSDavidif i started over, i'd lose like 50GB of movies and music09:55
darthanubisYou'd learn nothing that way if I just gave you the cmds09:55
darthanubisbut even if I gave you the cmds you don't know how/when/where to execute them09:56
darthanubisI have to know thaat the spare drive is connected and the address eg. /dev/sda?09:56
