ign0ramusI've finally tamed X to use a reasonable amount of cpu, but i've noticed if i leave the lappy running for long periods of time /usr/bin/python ends up eating like 85% cpu until i manually kill it.  anyone know why this is happening?00:48
SerpardumHey ignoramus00:48
ign0ramushey Serpardum00:48
Serpardumsome python script that's running?00:48
ign0ramusSerpardum, yeah, but what?  htop and top just list the python process00:49
SerpardumI wonder if there's a way to find out what files a process has open, it woudl be a .py file00:49
ign0ramusSerpardum, killing python doesn't seem to affect any of the apps I normally run00:49
SerpardumIt might be some background task or a server you don't use or something00:49
ign0ramusSerpardum, actually... wicd runs on python, doesn't it?00:50
* Serpardum shrugs00:50
ign0ramusalthough killing the process doesn't affect my wifi... :/00:50
Serpardumdo you try ps -f00:51
ign0ramusSerpardum,  it lists bash and ps... that's it00:51
Serpardumyeah, right now, so you don't have the python running right now00:51

ign0ramusSerpardum, no i know- i use it to manage my Amarok database, but it doesn't employ python in any way, right/00:57
Serpardumanything could be using the MYSQL, anythign that uses the database00:57

ign0ramusSerpardum, yep iso is the game01:06
cthulluyes, its asking for an image of the game disc01:07

innovate2000I just dd zero'd a brand new 1TB drive (used Gparted to format the drive - but the computer was set to AHCI - but that didn't work - 3 of 10 drives were "damaged" - once I switched to non-AHCI the rest of the drives formatted (ext3) without errors. I read that I might be able to reformat the drive if I zero it out first) - it took most of the day - the drive activity light just stopped - but...01:51
innovate2000...the bash prompt has not returned - and I've read that I should not stop the process for fear of further damaging the drive and rendering it unusable. I have a few more cycles of this to do on this drive and the others as well - but I have no idea what to do now - should I continue to just wait?01:51
cthulludarkenigma2652: because i know me all to well and Im unnerved by the idea that there is someone in the world who thinks like me01:51
darkenigma2652cthullu:... LOL01:51

darkenigma2652cthullu: I know my way of thinking is a fusion of many others, making me have split-personalities; and no, that does not sound too much like him01:52
ign0ramusafeijo, this file is mounted?01:53
cthulludarkenigma2652: good01:53

darkenigma2652Vista must die o.o01:55
afeijodarkenigma2652: its an solution01:55
ign0ramusafeijo, save your files you want from vista and nuke it from orbit01:55
ign0ramusits the only way to be sure.01:55
afeijoI should copy all other files to change that partition to ext301:55
darkenigma2652XP is good, I even liked 2k,  but Vista is flat-out terrible01:55
Serpardumall in all vista is a, well, terrible os01:55

ign0ramusafeijo, RFS was actually really good01:57
ign0ramusafeijo, journaling, mostly afaik (i'm no FS guru)01:57
darkenigma2652ReactOS is an open source re-write of the Windows NT kernel, compatible with Windows up to XP01:57
darkenigma2652It's at version 0.3.9 atm and is supposed to be installable on a normal computer vy 0.501:58

sakiriousNot really.01:59
Serpardumthen it wasnt' a quote then was it?  it was a misquote01:59
Walzmynign0ramus: well, maybe01:59

darkenigma2652lol02:00
ign0ramusafeijo, you really shouldn't use that word here.  i don't care, but you will get warned02:00
afeijoI used vista for 1 month, than it simple rebeled02:00
Walzmynafeijo: yer nuts. KDE has much better and way more flashy stuff that vista02:00

Serpardumit depends on how it's used I think02:01
Serpardumgay has kinda not meant gay for a long time02:01
darkenigma2652Walzmyn: There should be02:01
Serpardumthe funny thing is, it used to mean happy02:01
afeijoindeed02:01
ign0ramusafeijo, you should avoid any connotations of sexual orientation when discussing computers :)02:02
darkenigma2652I'm gay when I have lots of sugar ^_^02:02
ign0ramusunless you just wanna get gay with linux :)02:02
afeijoign0ramus: but we was talking about windows !!!!!!!!!02:02

Walzmynoh, yeah, i just remembered why i came here - is there a way to set a default view for dirs in dolphin?02:05
SerpardumThe one installed with the iso is too bright for me02:05
sakiriousThey all are way too clashy with colors.02:05
claudio-tuxyes02:05

ign0ramusi wish i were :(02:07
darkenigma2652We are completely off the subject of Kubuntu...02:07
afeijoI'm not going that way02:07
ign0ramusno ... that dolphin question... i'm checking it now02:07
SerpardumAt least I'm glad that KTorrent can't keep track of time02:07
Walzmynexactly, so, is there a way to set a default view in dolphin?02:07
SerpardumIt started at 9 hours an hour ago, now it's 3 hours02:07
darkenigma2652Btw, found decent dark theme for KDE: http://www.kde-look.org/content/show.php/darkPearl+for+QtCurve?content=9764402:07
afeijoWalzmyn: you want what view type?02:07
darkenigma2652I'll look for me02:07
darkenigma2652more*02:07
darkenigma2652I found me!02:07
Walzmynyou can set EVERYTHING to use one setting or to remember settings for each. But i'd liek to make the preveiw the one it comes up with if i've not set one02:07
afeijoSerpardum: I dont use ktorrent any more, suck too much CPU02:07
darkenigma2652I like Deluge02:08
ign0ramusspeaking of dolphin, has anyone tried the "~/.compose-cache" trick?02:08
darkenigma2652Simple, but lots of options02:08
Serpardumlol, it's freaking black and white02:08
Serpardumwhat si the ~/.compsoe-cache trick?02:08
Walzmynign0ramus: what is that trick supposed to do?02:08
ign0ramusWalzmyn, Serpardum: it allegedly dramatically speeds up the loading times of kde apps02:09
Serpardumrunning it, deleteing it?02:09
ign0ramusit seems to work for me, although i didn't benchmark it02:09
Serpardumediting it?02:09
ign0ramusSerpardum, creating it and accessing it via konqueror/dolphin02:09
Walzmynyou just create a directory and it's supposed to improve your machine?02:10
Serpardumit's a cache directory02:10
ign0ramushere's a link http://kdemonkey.blogspot.com/2008/04/magic-trick.html02:10
Serpardumit probably saves a lot of files here02:10
ign0ramusthat wasn't were i read it yesterday, but it explains just as well02:10
darkenigma2652There's NOTHING on deviantart for KDE themes02:11
ign0ramus"For those curious about what is going on here, this enables an optimization which Lubos (of general KDE speediness fame) came up with some time ago and was then rewritten and integrated into libx11."02:11
darkenigma2652Oh, I rather like this one: http://falco101.deviantart.com/art/Technica-Theme-8160770702:12
ign0ramusi will monitor it to see just how huge this file gets... but it does make dolphin pop up almost instantly02:12
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, icons are too Mac-y02:13
Walzmynso you just open the dir in dolphin after you make it?02:13
ign0ramusWalzmyn, yeah...02:13
ign0ramusWalzmyn, and you'll see that a new file has been created, the cache02:13
Serpardumbasically just create teh direcotry shoudl do it02:13
darkenigma2652This is fairly nice for KDE3: http://hcalves.deviantart.com/art/Coal-KDE-3-x-Theme-8573596402:14
ign0ramusagain, i don't know how big this file is going to get, but it is working nicely for now02:14
Serpardumactually ign0ramus I read about it, what it does is creates a hash of waht it loads that loads up faster than reading the big file02:14
Serpardumso it shoudl remain small02:14
ign0ramusSerpardum, cool.  good to know02:14
ign0ramustry it - open dolphin before and after having this file.  it made a noticeable difference for me02:14
innovate2000I just dd zero'd a brand new 1TB drive (used Gparted to format the drive - but the computer was set to AHCI - but that didn't work - 3 of 10 drives were "damaged" - once I switched to non-AHCI the rest of the drives formatted (ext3) without errors. I have a few more cycles of this to do on this drive and the others as well - but I have no idea what to do now - should I continue to just wait?02:15
Walzmyndidn't look like dolphin opened that much quicker to me02:15
ign0ramusWalzmyn, it made a difference for me... you can always just rm the thing if you don't like it02:15
dacjoin #autistis02:15
Walzmynign0ramus: can't see where it's hurting anything, i'll leave it02:16
dacjoin #autistic02:16
ign0ramusWalzmyn, you have to access the folder with dolphin first, to have the hashed cache entered02:16
Walzmynoh - is there anyreason why you can't format a 500gb HDD with fat32?02:16
Walzmynign0ramus: did02:16
ign0ramusWalzmyn, i dunno, just something i stumbled upon the other day and found it interesting02:17
Serpardumumm. no02:17
Serpardumyou don't have to acces sit02:17
innovate2000In System Monitor for CPU% (for the "dd" task)  that the drive is sleep02:17
SerpardumI just oepned a program, did a dir in it and it created the file02:17
innovate2000Actually it says "disk sleep"02:17
SerpardumI did run kate but didn't load anythign02:17
ign0ramusSerpardum, that's what the article i read yesterday said... the blogger probably didn't know what he was talking about (surprise)02:17
Serpardumthey suusally don't ^^02:17
Serpardumcreate it, run a program, look in the dir and see if a file exists02:18
SerpardumI did, and it did02:18
Walzmynif this is such a trick, why dosen't the folks that make that application have this installed as a default?02:18
Walzmyninnovate2000: just so you're not being ignored - I have no idea02:18
ign0ramusWalzmyn, i make no claims about it, i just read about it and asked if anyone else had heard of it...02:19
innovate2000Thanks - I am researching if there is a command to "touch" or wake a disk - since it was supposed to be zero'd I cannot mount it -02:19
Walzmynign0ramus: the explination makes sense. I'm just wondering why this is not a default setup02:19
ign0ramusWalzmyn, oh ok... yeah, i was kind of wondering that too... i thought maybe because the cache would grow too large, but Serpardum said it would remain small02:20
Walzmyninnovate2000: i can't even get parted to accknowledge that my external is plugged in so i can format it02:20
Walzmynign0ramus: it should just be the apps you use, as opposed to the one in / that's premade for everything02:20
innovate2000Walzmyn: an enclosure?02:21
ign0ramusWalzmyn, that seems to be the case02:21
Walzmyninnovate2000: yes02:21
innovate2000I guess it really doesn't matter - I too am using USB - the Sabrent 5 in 102:21
innovate2000Most of the time (99%) Ubuntu & Windows plays nice with it -02:22
Walzmynmy 100 gb works fine, but the 500 is giving problems02:22
innovate2000I have a had an enclosure or two that did not (with Ubuntu)02:22
ign0ramusbbl, shower02:22
=== ign0ramus is now known as ign0ramus_dirty
Serpardumthank gawd, I wondered what that smell was02:22
innovate2000Walzmyn: What is the 500 formatted as?02:22
ign0ramus_dirtyi heard that!02:22
WalzmynI had a couple of partitions on it, big one formatted ext3. I deleted the partitions to make one big fat32 and now parted won't even see the drive02:23
* Serpardum whistles tunelessly02:23
Serpardumyou try fdisk?02:23
Serpardumor whati's it claled.. hmm02:23
Walzmynfsck02:23
innovate2000Walzmyn: I would try testdisk - I've had great results with it - either Windows or Ubuntu02:23
Walzmynhavn't yet. that was last week. i've spent this week trying to get over the filesystem on thinkpads bug02:23
innovate2000yuck!02:24
Walzmyninnovate2000: will do when i get back on that project. That drive is to be my backup drive02:24

innovate2000Walzmyn: if the drive is FAT32, you may also try PC Inspector File Recovery (free: finds files and partitions - but in my opinion not as good as testdisk for restoring partitions) asd Zero Assumption Recovery ($$ - IMO - an AWESOME app for recovering files in the directory structure (mostly))02:27
innovate2000in the original directory structure - was what I meant to say02:28
Walzmyninnovate2000: i paid a hundred bucks for some recovery program a while back (windows installed to the external that was supposed to be off instead of the internal) That piece of software was awesome.02:28
Walzmyninnovate2000: but there's no data on the drive I want to keep. I want to get it working so i can use it as a backup02:29
innovate2000Well then you're set (if you need file recovery) - I think all you need is a partiton fix (and possibly MBR fix)02:29
cthulluROFLCOPTERS http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1fCHoI0h7Tc thats my opinion of internet piracy. P.S. If you dont want me to have it, dont put it in digital format. *DISCLAIMER* I do not condone piracy. I am not suggesting that you steal things. innovate2000or I've read (coz I'm in the same boat) about dd zeroing the drive to get it back to "factory" state - or you can try the disk utilities for the brand of disk. swattobut im concerned that it hasnt joined the partitions back together from when I used linux via wubi in windows14:38
bishopdoes it tell you the mount points of the partitions14:38
bishop?14:38
swattowell the mount point of ext3 is the root /14:39
swattobut the other two it doesnt list a mount point14:39
bishophave you only just installed ubuntu?14:39
Eismannyep, but which partition?14:39
BluesKajHowdy14:39
bishophello :-)14:39
swattoyes well basically I had windows installed and I installed ubuntu via wubi installer in windows.  But I went back to windows and it screwed up some of my apps so i decided to get rid of windows altogether so I just put the ubuntu install disk in and let that format my drive14:40
swattobut now i dont know if it still sees my drive as two seperate partitions or if it is just the entire drive that is being used now for linux14:40
bishopwell if you would like to keep all your files in the same place (save haveing 3-4 dif partitions ) i would reinstall it and have only root / and about 3-4 gb of swap14:41

KDeskI have problems with my printer since some days, but I don't know what is the problem. From 127.0.0.1:631 In Administration, Find printer, Cups detects three HP DESKJET 840C printers, but I have only one. When I turn onn the printer or off cups (or something) detects a new printer, but it is again the same printer, so I have it twice or more times installed. And the real problem is when I try to print from FF or Oo.o, it doesn't work, but there isn't any18:34
KDeskmessage about any error. So I have to go to 127.0.0.1:631 and select "Start printer" in one of the two or sometimes three printers to start print. It happens all the time. I have triet to remove and pruge many cups, hpijs foomatic gutenprint packages and reinstall them again, but still the same problem. What can I do?18:34
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: I don't think even I'M that bad lol18:34
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, I am pretty proficient on Windows, and took that confidence over to Linux, where i quickly had my ego reduced to near-nothing :)18:35
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: My ego faltered at first, but by now it's stronger than it was XD18:36
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, yup... my ego is where it should be... i know some things, but am smart enough to know what not to mess with now :)18:36

ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, config files are fun to mess with, just make a backup first XD18:37
BluesKajKDesk,  it's not necessary to give the printer a IP address unless it's a network shared printer connected to a different pc18:38
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, my Hardy xorg.conf was huge, all different settings I'd specified for this or that.. and once I got everything right, my system was perfect for me18:38

ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, no thanks! :)18:38
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: No, it's actually awesome18:39
KDeskBluesKaj: hi, it is not the address of the prionter, it is the web interfaz to cups, that is what I understand.18:39
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: You can do almost everything in it18:39
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, Arch is one distro i haven't tried, but really want to.  their kde is *awesome*18:39
BluesKajKDesk, find the driver for your printer make and model in a package manager (I use adept) and check the drivers list for asupported printers18:39

darkenigma2652ign0ramus: lol18:40

BluesKajKDesk,  you don't need to config cups if the printer is connected to your pc18:40

swattoThey system tray widget does not display open applications, its just blank18:43
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, i keep windows for my cell phone, printer, and MS Exchange (work), and that's it.18:44
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: My old HP should OOB18:44
ign0ramusdarkenigma2652, HP printers work surprisingly well in Linux18:44
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: Because of HPLIP18:44

darkenigma2652ign0ramus: It supports 1860 HP printers18:44

BluesKajKDesk,  use the package manager to uninstall the printer / drivers and relogin , then install the printer driver for your make and model listed in the package manager. That's my best advice . :P18:45
darkenigma2652ign0ramus: Fantastic news just as I'm about to install Jaunty and connect my printer...18:45

DiViN3Singapore Location22:05
DiViN3NTU22:05
DragnslcrWhat's the URL?22:05
DiViN3i also tried from other source also its still the same22:05
DiViN3http://ntuoss1.uni.cx/ubuntu-releases/kubuntu/jaunty/kubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso22:06
DiViN3i tried both the alternate n direct source22:06
phhDiViN3: your link is .iso, not .file....22:07
DragnslcrAnd the file you get is kubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386.iso.file?22:07
DiViN3well i know my link is iso but when i complete the download it shows its in .file22:07
DragnslcrAre you sure you're letting the download finish?22:07
DiViN3of coz22:07
DiViN3i tried many times22:08
DragnslcrWhat browser are you using?22:08
DiViN3i hv been downloading the iso files from online n hv nvr face such issue22:08
DiViN3i tried using firefox, IE,Opera, Websynx  all the same22:08
DiViN3wat could hv went wrong22:09
phhwell it's a iso22:09
phhcheck the md5sum22:09
phhand just burn it22:09
DiViN3i tried22:09
DiViN3i even extract the whole file n recompiled to iso but still its show .file22:10
phh....22:10
phhDiViN3: it's your file browser which sucks then22:10
phhbut just check md5sum and burn it22:10
phhanyway, wo ever trust extensions ?22:10
phhit doesn't mean anything22:11
DiViN304-ALTERNATE-I386 File22:11
DiViN3<phh> DiViN3: it's your file browser which sucks then <--- well if thats the case i dnt think it should be the same in several comps right22:11
phhit's not a problem of the server, not a problem of web browser22:12
phhthe only remaining thing is your file browser.22:12
phh(or the "thing" saying it's extension is a file)22:12
DiViN3C:\Documents and Settings\DiViN3\My Documents\Downloads\Operating Systems\kubuntu-9.04-alternate-i386  <---- thats wat it shows in the final issue22:13
DiViN3but when i open the folder it shows its not an iso22:13
DiViN3i can see the rest of the iso in there22:14
DiViN3nvm i guess i hv fixed the issue now22:14
phhi still don't see the issue actually.22:15
dyn0myt3sounds like the same problem i had. the zip file you downloaded is the iso, and sholud be treated as a image.22:16
DiViN3so wat happen dyn0myt322:16
phhyeah that's what i'm saying, extensions doesn't mean anything you just have to burn it as is ....22:17
DiViN3yea but when i burn it it didnt work22:17
phhyou write it as an iso image and not as a simple file22:17
phh?22:18
DiViN3but i manage to resolve that by removing the wubi.exe n recompiled it as iso n it works22:18
phh....22:18
dyn0myt3i used Infrarecorder to burn the cd.22:19
DiViN3well i guess they should hv release a image without the wubi.exe in it22:19
dyn0myt3should work if 'burn as image"22:20
phhDiViN3: well, it's NOT the problem22:20
phhthe problem is that you don't know how to burn iso images22:20
DiViN3lol22:21
phha burner don't even care of what is inside the ISO22:21
phhyou could write totally random data it would works.22:21
dyn0myt3whats a good   video player to use?22:22
DiViN3nvm phh , i guess that you dnt seem to understand wat i was refering to22:22
DiViN3dyn0myt3: use vlc player22:22
phhyeah sure, i'm totally noob concerning CD burning.22:22

RegralCan anyone fix a problem with installing adobe flash player o ubuntu23:47
yoshiyRegral: did you already tried the package "flashplugin-nonfree" ?23:48
ign0ramusRegral, "sudo apt-get install flashplugin-nonfree" then restart firefox23:49
Regralyea im ninstalling it at and gonna try to manual the adobe23:49
ign0ramusRegral, the one from Adobe generally gets overwritten by the packaged version when you apt-get upgrade anyway, but feel free23:50
AriathaxxHow do I install Kubuntu without a CD?23:50
ign0ramusAriathaxx, flash drive23:50
Regralill try what you suggested23:50
Ariathaxxlike a USB right?23:50
ign0ramusAriathaxx, exactly like that :)23:50
AriathaxxOk, how big flashdrive I need?23:51
ign0ramusAriathaxx, as big as the ISO23:51
ign0ramusAriathaxx, with your wubi problem, you need to put the ISO and wubi in the same directory.23:51
Allydedehello can get the ksmoothdock for the amd64 system?23:52
AriathaxxOk, I try with putting them in same directory :)23:52
ign0ramusAllydede, did you look at kooldock?23:53
ign0ramusAriathaxx, yes, they must be in the same folder for it to work23:53
AriathaxxCan wubi only install ubuntu?23:53
ign0ramusAriathaxx, as opposed to what?23:53
AriathaxxOpensuse or something23:53
dyn0myt3lol23:53

Ariathaxxchecking*23:53
Ariathaxxso kubuntu can play pc games good using wine? :)23:54
AriathaxxNever used kubuntu really23:54
dyn0myt3wow at   least23:54
Jadohi, i've just installed kubuntu 9.04 on a new laptop but i can't start a graphic session i got : "kstartupconfig4 does not exist or fails. The error code is 3. Check your installation"23:54
ign0ramusAriathaxx, I wouldn't recommend it... keep your windows games on windows... but some games (like Blizzard games) do run as well (or even better!) on WINE23:55
dyn0myt3just the windows managers dont like Alt + Tab ing much23:55
yoshiyAriathaxx you can check at http://winehq.org if the game u like is supported23:55
dyn0myt3thats why i switched to K, gnome is the worst.23:55
AriathaxxLet's say I have World of Warcraft installed on a directory on my secondharddrive, I can access my harddrive through Kubuntu and start World of warcraft without installing the game again?23:56
dyn0myt3yes23:56
dyn0myt3you can play it directly from the location on the  NTFS partition23:56
yoshiydoes this apply to all games?23:56
dyn0myt3but i think your supposed to copy it to /home23:56
dyn0myt3idn i only play wow :P23:57
valgaavAriathaxx: AFAIK WoW is one of those games that can work great with wine23:57
dyn0myt3jjust make sure video card is correctly installed23:58
AriathaxxOk sounds great23:58
ign0ramusi forget where i saw it, but some games actually run smoother on wine than on windows ...23:58
valgaavbut it also depends on GPU ... Wine sadly still tends to work better with nvidia blob ...23:58
dyn0myt3before you start wow23:58
yoshiyanother way to run win games is to use virtualbox + wined3d23:58
AriathaxxI am temporary changing OS from Windows Vista to Kubuntu since my windows says I have fake serial and will be closed today ;)23:59
dyn0myt3doh23:59
joshjtlhi folks, is there some way to make amarok2 look/act more like its predecessor amarok 1.4? I find it not that intuitive at the moment.23:59
ign0ramusAriathaxx, Vista is terrible anyway... if you have to use Windows (like I do), you can get a free copy of Win7 that last for about another year23:59
valgaavwell you can get free windows for a year time with windows 7 rc23:59
