balachmarHi, wan t to fix bug #370261 by specifying the mentioned flags in the makefile. Compiling with -D_FORTIFY_SOURCE=0 -fno-stack-protector makes the package work. (Have verified this on my own machine) However I am not a compiling expert are there any downsides of these arguments to the compiler?10:53
ubot4Launchpad bug 370261 in nvram-wakeup "nvram-wakeup  buffer overflow detected" [Undecided,Confirmed] https://launchpad.net/bugs/37026110:53
balachmarI know it is only a temporary work around, but I think it is better to have a working package instead of a broken one...10:54
balachmarEspecially because this is often used for htpc recording stuff. Which will now not wakeup for the next recording.10:55
bencrisford_Hey balachmar! :D10:57
bencrisford_this channel is mainly about bug triaging10:57
bencrisford_I suggest you visit #ubuntu-motu10:57
bencrisford_for some packaging advice :)10:57
balachmarooh, ok! :) Thanks10:57
persiaTechnically, this is compilation advice rather than packaging advice, but the same forum is probably useful :)10:58
bencrisford_oh :S10:58
bencrisford_but compiling is kind of packaging10:59
bencrisford_because packaging involves makefiles also right?  im probably wrong10:59
bencrisford_but the motu will be able to help10:59
persiabencrisford_, Well, it's more complicated than that, and depends on who you ask, and ... :)10:59
persiaBut yes, the MOTU ought be able to help.10:59
bencrisford_ok :)10:59
balachmaralready asked in motu :)11:00
persiaNote that sometimes discussion here gets quite technical, so it's never wrong to ask about a bug here, but if nobody responds, it can be worth asking elsewhere, just to get a different bunch of people.11:03
bencrisford_ok :)11:03
bencrisford_yeah11:03
bencrisford_but this channel is technically about bug triaging11:03
bencrisford_thats why its here11:04
bencrisford_so people on here arent always expected to know11:04
bencrisford_thats all i meant :)11:04
balachmarno worries, I like being pointed the right way :) Glad that someone takes the time to do that.11:16
bencrisford_:)11:16
persiabencrisford_, Right.  Some people might, some might not.  There's a diverse mix of people here :)11:19
persiabencrisford_, And pointing to #ubuntu-motu was definitely the right advice: I'm just noting that, depending on relative channel traffic, etc. sometimes this isn't a bad place for some discussions.11:19
bencrisford_im not disputing that people on here would know11:20
bencrisford_im just saying that people wouldnt be expected to11:20
bencrisford_well not all people11:20
bencrisford_because this is the triaging chat :)11:20
persiaAnd I completely agree :)11:20
bencrisford_:)11:21
bencrisford_persia: dont suppose you have a minute to review my bug-control application?11:23
bencrisford_i sent it about a week ago, i have two responses -  1 indifferent and 1 positive11:23
bencrisford_it'd be great if you could give me your opinion :)11:23
persiabencrisford_, My apologies, but I've not been following your work closely.  Based solely on your application, I'd have to send an indifferent response, and I suspect it would be better to give you feedback directly, rather than through the application.11:28
bencrisford_ok11:29
persiaThe work you've done is largely positive, and has benefited at least those bugs.11:29
persiaA couple areas in which I think you could improve:11:29
bencrisford_ive learnt alot since i submitted my application11:29
persia1) Searching for more similar bugs when finding an issue11:29
persiafor example: the bluez bug is related to a complex set of issues, and isn't hardware specific, etc.11:29
bencrisford_k...11:30
persiaThere's already a bug about the gnome-user-share thing (being chased by Baptiste Mile-Mathias), to which I suspect that's a dupe, but being sure would require working with the submitter more.11:30
persia2) being more careful about slang11:30
bencrisford_:S11:31
bencrisford_oh?11:31
persiaIn a few bugs, I see words with which I'm not overly familiar, although I can deduce the meaning in context.  As many users (and developers) of Ubuntu only have English as a second, third, or even fourth language, it's especially important to be careful.11:31
bencrisford_i am very careful about slang11:32
bencrisford_but i often use complex words11:32
bencrisford_such as wherefore, and furthermore11:32
persiahttps://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kompozer/+bug/374062/comments/1 was the one that caught my ele especially.11:33
ubot4Launchpad bug 374062 in kompozer "Can't edit while search dialog is open" [Wishlist,Confirmed]11:33
persias/ele/eye/11:34
bencrisford_ah11:34
bencrisford_ill try not to use 'brill' again :)11:34
bencrisford_but as i said; i learnt alot in the last week11:34
persiaAnd lastly, trying to look for alternate workarounds.  There's a heap of known bugs that aren't easily solved (like the Broadcomm chipset stuff).11:35
persiaMany of these are documented in forums, etc.11:35
persiaWhile often the developers can determine the cause of a bug from the hardware data, etc., if it can be narrowed by trying a couple things, that can help verify it's part of something else.11:36
persia(I guess this is part of #1 above, really).11:36
bencrisford_yeah11:36
persiaBut like I said at the beginning, you're definitely making the bugs show progress.11:37
persiaIt might be just that the 5 bugs you selected are no longer your best, or similar.11:37
persiaIf you don't get enough positive responses in another week or two, I'd suggest following up to the thread with an update: "I've learned a lot more about bug triage in the past few weeks, and I'd like to submit these 5 (different) candidates to demonstrate that and renew my application" or some such.11:38
balachmaraah, I thought bencrisford_ had written a computer application to help with bugs... But it is an application to join bug-control :)11:39
bencrisford_:) :P :)11:40
bencrisford_persia: i have many more than 5 new ones at https://bugs.launchpad.net/bencrisford11:41
bencrisford_if you want to see my latest work11:41
bencrisford_its all there :)11:41
persiabencrisford_, Hrm.  I'm not familiar enough with current approval processes for bug-control to know if I'm supposed to consider that, unless I've been working with you directly.11:42
bencrisford_you have been :) all this morning :P11:43
persiaYou might ask someone more actively involved in bug-control.11:43
bencrisford_ok11:43
persiaWell, yeah, but no on bugs :)11:43
persias/no/not/11:43
persia(and I'm trying to do something else, so not paying enough attention, except when I was reading your application)11:44
