firsmMmh, the "back button" in firefox doesn't work in jaunty anymore, it's greyed out. any ideas?00:06
SiDiworks very well here00:07
firsmyeah stopped working today, which is 1 day after upgrade00:07
knomefirsm, you are at the first page?00:07
knome:P00:07
SiDinot directly linked to upgrade imo firsm00:07
SiDiits pretty much the same version00:07
firsmknome: No I am not.00:08
knomefirsm, do you run any plugins?00:08
firsmknome: nope, except for the stuff that came with ubuntu00:08
firsmif I right-click on the back button, I can see the history, but it's still greyed out00:08
knomefirsm, what happens if you run "firefox -safe-mode" from terminal?00:09
knome(after closing all firefox windows)00:09
firsmknome: then it works again00:09
knomefirsm, close all windows again and start firefox again00:10
SiDiits a session problem00:10
knomefirsm, what happens then?00:10
SiDi(kill any firefox window till "pgrep firefox" returns nothing, even)00:10
firsmknome: Mmh, after running it in safemode, it works again... hmm weird, thanks00:10
knomenp.00:10
SiDi(also, you can browse about:config but i'm not sure which value manages this)00:10
firsmI think these days ff is just more broken than IE00:10
SiDinah00:11
firsmI'd like to use opera if they had 64bit qt4 builds :(00:12
=== [o_O] is now known as danopia
artistxechrome is supposed to be ready by June (for linux)00:34
firsmmmh, that's good00:34
artistxeother than that there is opera. which is supposed to be better than firefox.00:35
SiDisupposed *00:36
firsmwhich I just mentioned00:36
firsmthere are not qt4 builds for amd64 yet00:36
SiDiOpera has _the_ rendering engine, but its qt :[ and still no support for extensions :p00:37
* SiDi brbs with ff 3.600:37
firsmactually, I don't mind qt anymore (since qgtkstyle)00:37
firsmI tried opera a while back and it didn't crash as often as firefox, but I don't want qt3 (only option for amd64)00:37
* artistxe tries out opera for first time right now00:38
firsmSiDi: Hmm? Opera does have support for extensions?!00:38
SiDiThey do ?00:39
SiDiAs well as ff's sexy extensions ? :P00:39
firsmSiDi: yes, since 1999 or something like that00:39
SiDihuh00:39
SiDiive been using opera for a while00:39
SiDiwhen i say extensions i mean extensions :p00:39
SiDiWhere is adblock for opera ? :p00:39
SiDi(and i know they got an adblocking tool since ages but it cant sync to a list, thus sucks :p)00:40
firsmit's built in00:40
firsmbookmark synchro is built in too00:40
artistxedoes not seem much faster than my tweaked firefox .00:41
artistxeSiDi : adblocking ? you do not use hosts file ?00:41
firsmor use privoxy00:42
artistxeyes00:42
jacobuHow can I make the volume icon in the top right of the screen display a volume control on left click (like in gnome) instead of opening xfce4-mixer?01:01
SiDiyou can't :p01:04
SiDibut if you install xfapplet you can use gnome's one01:04
jacobuNOOOOO!!!!01:04
jacobuoh01:04
SiDi!info xfce4-goodies-xfapplet01:04
ubottuPackage xfce4-goodies-xfapplet does not exist in jaunty01:04
SiDifailure.01:04
jacobuwell shucks01:04
jacobuAre there any window manager-independent solutions?01:04
SiDixfce4-xfapplet-plugin01:04
SiDiI don't think so.01:05
jacobuor that01:05
SiDiYou can scroll up/down the mixer icon by the way.01:05
jacobuoh, didn't know that01:05
jacobuthanks01:05
SiDi;)01:05
SiDiyou'll see how faster to manage it is than *clicking*01:05
jacobuStill a little new to xfce, appreciate the support01:05
SiDiyou're welcome01:05
RolaultenHeya, I just got round to updating my desktop to 9.04...and I've run into a couple blips. The first is I can find no way to edit the contux menu's (on the desktop and such). Also (And I dont remember how I did this) holding down buttons 1 and 2 on my mouse would activate auto scrolling (in Firefox) or the compiz cube, now its just contex menu's...01:06
SiDihttp://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu Rolaulten01:07
SiDimenu editor should hopefully land for xfce 4.801:07

dylan_hi guys, I just installed xubuntu 9.04, I have a nvidia  8800 gt and a monitor that is capapble of 1280 x 1024, but, for some reason, the highest resolution in nvidia's settings is 1024x768, aside from some obscure widescreen formats.   How can I force 1280x 1024 ?05:17

corey_Anyone have any ideas?08:12
Feldegastrare you able to boot the cd and then modify the config file to add yourself?08:14

corey_Just press enter at the kboot: prompt08:22
Feldegastroh08:22
Feldegastrsounds like you might have lilo installed then?08:22
corey_All the articles I find say to press esc and pick it from the grub list.08:22
Feldegastrif you have lilo you don't have grub08:23
corey_Never heard of lilo.08:23
Feldegastrlilo is what existed before grub08:23
Feldegastrand on some hardware lilo is still used as it is hard to get grub working08:24
=== Feldegastr is now known as Feldegast
corey_I have only ever used linux on ps3's sorry.  And this is my first experience with Ubuntu.  I am used to Gentoo but figured I would give this a shot.08:25
artistxeeeep. trying to stop package installer. too many gnome dependencies !!!08:25

having-wireless-most of the references on the web are mentioned about simply dont use the default firmware version 2.3.1.34  and use version 1.2.1.3412:41
having-wireless-and this should do the trick - but it doesn't seem to work for me12:41

MoonTigerhi guys :) does anyone know how to get rid of the "new" launch bar icon tooltips? thnx12:46
SiDiWhat is that, MoonTiger ?12:56
MoonTigerSiDi, sorry didnt see the reply13:00
MoonTigeri mean if you have a launcher icon (like the quicklaunch thing in windows)13:00
MoonTigerand you hold the mouse over it13:00
MoonTigeryou get a huge tooltip with an icon and such13:00
SiDii see13:00
MoonTigeri want the old way back with just a small tooltip that has text13:00
SiDiand you dont want this ?13:00
MoonTiger:)13:01
SiDii think you should go to #xfce and ask for that, or even better, bugzilla.xfce.org13:01
SiDiand fill a bug report as feature request13:01

cemunalhi all15:37
cemunalwhat is the name of default cursor theme in xubuntu?15:37
SiDi'default' ? :p15:37
charlie-tcayeah, same one I am thinking of, SiDi15:37
SiDiDMZ White, cemunal15:38
SiDiAfaik it's this one by default.15:38
cemunalpackage name?15:38
SiDicharlie-tca: see, isn't that 'default' great user support ? :)15:38
SiDicemunal: its installed by default :/15:38
charlie-tcawell, not great, but accurate!15:38
charlie-tca:-)15:39
SiDicemunal: it doesnt have its own package, and i don't know in which its included15:39
charlie-tcadmz-cursor-theme is the source package15:40
* SiDi feels dumb now.15:40
charlie-tcaI cheated - looked it up here: https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+search15:41
cemunalcharlie-tca, thanks so much :)15:42
charlie-tcaYou are welcome15:42
charlie-tcaYou can find almost any source there15:42
cemunalcharlie-tca, thanks again15:48

Chicken_combohey... how do i remove the login screen so that the machine auto boots with no prompts?17:15
charlie-tcawell...17:16
SiDipatience is a virtue. A shame some people forget this17:22
Kangarooowhat's GDM? and does xubuntu have it?17:22
Kangaroooand ubuntu?17:22
SiDiGDM is the login manager17:22
charlie-tcaand yes17:22
SiDiboth xubuntu and ubuntu use it, while kubuntu uses kdm17:22
charlie-tcaand yes17:22
SiDiyou can also test slim, if you feel like17:22
SiDiand you can manage gdm with Apps -> System -> Connection window (or whatever the true menu entry's name is :x)17:23
charlie-tcaI keep trying to remember patience, SiDi17:23
charlie-tca:-)17:23
SiDioh, i often forget it too17:24
SiDisee, after 5 months of working with totally uncapable people, i finally sent them a kind of rough email to make fun of their work; They reviewed it by then. It was still a failure, but was a little less epic than the previous one :P17:25
charlie-tcaApplications -> Settings -> Login window  for 8.10 and 8.04, Session and Startup for 9.0417:25
charlie-tcaSometimes things just work like that ;-)17:25
SiDimeh :)17:29
Kangarooook I googled slim so configuration of started apps will still work? its just a different login screen?17:31
zerothis I have a USB harddrive with a live bootable partitiion and a partition with a normal instalation. how can set it up to select which to boot?17:32
Kangaroooor it will make desktop different also?17:32
Kangaroooin bios? zerothis17:33
zerothisNo, bios isn't problem. It will boot whatever installtion I installed last. But there is not option in the bootloader that allows me to *select* which partition to boot.17:34
Kangarooohttp://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/liveusb.php17:39
zerothiskangaroo: I'll consider clonezilla. but this means starting from scratch and using FAT.17:42
SiDiKangarooo: its a different login screen. If you're happy with gdm, don't bother with Slim.17:45
Kangarooowell I don't ever see login couse if have autologin so ill stay with GDM but maybe slim has some more pros?17:48
KangaroooI mean then no difference but if some more pros.. (pluses..) so I could consider since without more pluses I don't know :) or just ok thanks 4 help :) and thanks 4 helping what makes this community better17:50
SiDiits lighter17:51
SiDibut it has cons17:51
Kangarooozerothis: http://www.google.com/search?ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&sourceid=navclient&gfns=1&q=ubuntu+live+usb17:51
SiDino buttons, only keyboard shortcuts, and it doesnt have all gdm's features17:51
SiDizerothis: you got grub on your normal install, right ? add a line there, pointing to your hdd17:52
SiDifor instance if you have 1 hdd, your hdd is hdd(0,#) in grub, so the external one would be hd(1,#) if plugged17:53
SiDi!grub17:53
ubottuGRUB is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto17:53
Kangarooozerothis: BTW on installed system click System -> Administration -> USB startup disk creator .. maybe 4 more information consider check that also.. I haven't tryd that17:54
zerothisSiDi: yes, grub on the normal install. both partitions are on the same harddrive.17:56
KangaroooI would do like this - 1.) start live cd if not installed hard drive (not usb) 2.) check what each code is 4 each partition (I don't know what command shows that) 3.) add correct one or both partiton codes to grub :)17:58
Kangarooo(and I don't know where to change grub) :)17:58
Kangarooomaybe it will smth like media/usb1(0,2) I don't know17:59
SiDizerothis: edit your grub then, and boot your other partition from grub ?18:13
SiDiif you boot on the live part, the hdd order wont be the same :)18:13
SiDijust boot on the normal one, plug your "live" disk, and check it with sudo fdisk -l18:13
scheid_new to xubuntu-wondering if anyone can walk me through how to swith to external monitor from a laptop18:38
knome!ask | scheid_18:39
ubottuscheid_: Please don't ask to ask a question, simply ask the question (all on ONE line, so others can read and follow it easily). If anyone knows the answer they will most likely reply. :-)18:39

* SiDi is having a hard time trying to see why use metacity inside of xfce.19:19
charlie-tcaJust install metacity and remove xfwm, perhaps19:19
SiDiyou can use "metacity --replace"19:19
SiDibut it'll more likely crash your session19:19
Idzmewhy would you run metacity in xubuntu?19:20
knomelike sessions don't crash anyway19:20

dylan_anyone know how to generate modelines so I get get the full 1280x1024 like my monitor was intended to do ?19:57
zerothis1dylan_: your video card may be the limiting factor. other than that, try xrander to add modes (not sure how that works) and also xrander to change the resolution manually to 1280x102419:59
zerothis1dylan_: xrandr --output VGA --mode 1280x1024. where VGA is the actualy name of you monitor. find the name with xrandr -q20:00
gnoobI would make sure that my video card supported that first.20:01
dylan_well the video card definately supports it, (nvidia 8800), and I can get this res in XP w/ the same hardware20:01
zerothis1gnoob has a point, you'll be blind if it doesn't and there is the very slight possiblity of hardware damage20:01
dylan_thannks zerothis1 I will try this20:01
dylan_zerothis1, I tried xrandr -q, and I don't see where the name of my monitor is.. ?20:03
dylan_http://pastebin.ca/142571220:03
zerothis1can you copy paste what -q said to pastebin.org please20:04
zerothis1ohh,20:04
dylan_:)20:04
zerothis1I've never seen that before, but it looks like you monitor is called default20:05
dylan_hmm20:05
dylan_I will try that then20:05
zerothis1xrandr --output default --mode 1280x102420:05
dylan_zerothis1, the output from that command is "xrandr: cannot find mode 1280 x 1024"20:06
dylan_its weird because I can get 1280 x 1024 with xp20:07
dylan_and the manual for the screen says it is 1280 x 102420:07
dylan_sxvga20:07
zerothis1then it needs to be added first. try man xrandr to investigate adding modes20:09
dylan_ok I will try that, It's not being detected because there I am using a vga to pci adapter on the back of my video card20:10
dylan_er not pci, its that white connection20:11
dylan_lol nm20:11
dylan_can't explain it20:11
Slonkiedvi :)20:11
dylan_yes !20:11
dylan_I am using a vga->dvi adapter because the video card doesnt have vga20:12
dylan_so that might be confusing the nvidia drivers/software20:12
zerothis1dylan_: actually, that should register as vannilla VGA20:14
zerothis1xrandr --newmode <modeline>20:15
dylan_hmm ok , how do I determine a modeline ?20:16
zerothis1never in my life have I used a modeline, sorry20:16
dylan_maybe I should just edit my xorg.conf and add modelines in there,20:17
dylan_or does xrandr do this for me ?20:17
zerothis1xrandr will do it20:17
rogiHello all, new to xubuntu (used to debian on my server though) and looking for suggestions for an iPhoto type package from Synaptic. Any recommendations? Doesn't need to be too heavyweight.20:17
dylan_ok20:17
dylan_now I am off to learn about modelines20:17
zerothis1xrandr doesn't use xorg.conf, that's kinda point20:18
charlie-tcarogi: not familiar with iPhoto; makes it hard20:18
charlie-tcaIs that a viewer, editor, or what?20:18
rogicharlie-tca: ok well just any reasonable photo/album/image collection manager will do fine.20:18
rogicollection viewer rather than editor20:19
jmburgessrogi: Picasa or fspot are quite good20:23
rogifspot is ok on xubuntu? Ok, I'll check it out. Thanks for the tip.20:24
charlie-tcawhat about gthumb?20:25
rogicharlie-tca: I have that already, just was looking for a little more functionality. I'm just about to try fspot. Thanks for the reply anyway. :)20:27
charlie-tcagood luck :-)20:28
jmburgessrogi: ya fspot only requires mono really so any *buntu should work20:31

nikolamhi i have an idea.20:44
nikolamis it possible to start some intensive 3d game on machine with very fast 3d graphics20:44
nikolamand to reedirect output to other machine over network?20:45
nikolamlike, using vnc or redirecting x display?20:45
nikolamcould it work? :)20:45
zerothis nikolam: not unless the game is playable a less than 1 fps20:47
SimetricalI'm trying out Xubuntu because Ubuntu seemed to lag too much, but it doesn't seem to recognize my second monitor.  Applications -> Settings -> Display only shows one.20:48
SimetricalAny thoughts?20:48
SimetricalOther than that, it seems better so far.20:48
charlie-tca!info xrandr20:48
ubottuPackage xrandr does not exist in jaunty20:48
charlie-tca!info randr20:49
ubottuPackage randr does not exist in jaunty20:49
zerothis?, I'm using xrandr on Jaunty20:49
rogijmburgess: fspot is great. Just what I was looking for. Thanks.20:50
zerothisSimetrical: ignore ubottu, xrandr will do the job20:50
SimetricalSo I should do it by command line?  xrandr does recognize two monitors, but one seems to be disabled.20:50
zerothiswhat is the output from xrandr -q ?20:51
Simetricalhttp://paste.ubuntu.com/174485/20:51
zerothisxrandr --output VGA2 --mode 1024x768 --right-of VGA120:52
SimetricalNeat.20:53
SimetricalThanks.20:53
charlie-tcamatter of fact, xrandr is the only way to have two monitors in Xfce 4.6, I think20:54
SimetricalWill that stick, or do I have to do it on startup every time?20:54
nikolamzerothis, and on gigabit lan? doesn`t X is ment exactly for that, so you can redirect display of one (3D) application to terminal?20:54
zerothisnikolam: I wouldn't know about redirecting X to other terminals. But I think its called tunneling. I know VNC, and VNC is slow20:55
zerothisnikolam: http://www.cag.lcs.mit.edu/~wentzlaf/faq/ssh_X.html20:56
zerothisI recall seeing Xeyes tunneled over gb lan, it was slow too20:57
SimetricalThe only other thing I've noticed about Xfce that I like less than GNOME is that the CPU monitor seems inferior.  My GNOME CPU monitor had different colors for user, system, and ionice; plus graphs for memory, swap, network use, etc.  I found it very handy to notice problems at a glance.20:59
SimetricalDoes anyone know of a good widget (maybe not panel-based) for Xfce that will do that sort of thing?21:00
charlie-tcaYou could install the Gnome cpu monitor21:00
nikolamSimetrical, install xfApplet and use your beloved GNOME applet :)21:01
SimetricalThat's the nice thing, I can take the best parts of all the window managers.  :)21:01
* Simetrical <3 Linux21:01
zerothisSimetrical: so gnome used alot more of you CPU to show how much of your CPU was being used?21:01
nikolamSimetrical, :)21:01
SimetricalWell, this is actually a reasonably powerful machine.  Dual-core Athlon 5000+, 4G RAM, etc.  But I had insufferable latency when switching applications, and it drove me up the wall.  Xubuntu seems to be better.21:02
nikolamSimetrical, 32 or 64-bit?21:02
Simetrical(The real CPU hog here is XChat.  It's using something like 50% of one CPU continuously.)21:03
Simetrical32-bit.21:03
nikolamSimetrical, wow, that is not right21:03
nikolamSimetrical, try 64, maybe it is faste ra bit21:03
nikolamwhat xchat version is that? you have some scripts runing in it?21:03
SimetricalI've heard enough complaints about 64-bit that I don't think it's worth reinstalling the OS to try out, at least for the moment.21:04
nikolamSimetrical, I use 64bit from 7.04 onwards. It works great.21:04
SimetricalNo, no scripts that I'm aware of.  Packaged versions.  I have 17 windows of it open, though.21:04
nikolamBut under 4gogs, no, 32 bit is good21:04
Simetrical3G of RAM is more than enough for me anyway.21:04
nikolamI am planin to add 4gigs in few days. i won`t be able to do that on 32bit21:05
SimetricalHow do I install xfApplet?  I don't see it as an option anywhere.21:07
nikolamsynaptic? Simetrical21:07
SimetricalI'd have thought it would be installed by default as an option for "Add New Item", or at least show up in the Add/Remove... search.  Got it now, thakns.21:09
Simetricalthanks.21:09
nikolamnp :) also install your beloved gnome applet21:12
SimetricalGNOME didn't even seem to let me put panels on the second monitor, unless I did dual-head.21:14
SimetricalSo far there's pretty much nothing I dislike about Xfce.21:15

dylan_Slonkie, thanks, also, do you know how I can get the full 1280 x 1024 like my hardware is designed for ? in XP I get this res no probs, but I can't in Xubntu... I have tried adding a modeline, not quite sure if I did it properly though..21:50

dylan_Slonkie, in the keyboard shorcuts what would the command for resetting the X server be ?21:52
Slonkiesorry I don't know that either21:53
SiDisudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart but needs sudo21:55
SiDidylan_: if you wanna reenable ctrl + alt + backspace, download dontzap21:55
SiDiand use dontzap --disable once in the console21:55
SiDi(sudo apt-get install dontzap *)21:55
dylan_SiDi, I did that everything looks like it works, but ctrl alt bs does nothing, do I need to reboot the computer /21:58
dylan_?21:58
SiDipossibly reboot the session for it to work22:00
corey_Does anyone know how to access recovery mode in xubuntu 9.04?22:00
SiDisame as in ubuntu22:01
SiDion grub menu you have a menu entry for recovery mode22:01
corey_I don't have a grub menu/22:01
corey_When I turn on my system I have a kboot: prompt.22:01
SiDiif you lost it, copy a menu entry of your grub menu, and replace the ro quiet splash by ro single22:01
SiDiCan't help then22:02
dylan_SiDi, resetting the computer fixed it22:02
dylan_do you know how to get ctrl alt esc back ?22:02
Slonkiei by mistake turned of something, that does that thunar doesn't go infront of my other running application when i open a folder.22:15
Slonkieit just opens in minimized status22:15
SiDidylan_: add a shortcut with xkill22:23
dylan_is there any way I can FORCE my resolution to 1280 x 1024 ? in win XP I get this no problem, but in xubuntu 9.04 max is 1024 x 768 ??22:29
SiDiinstall the gpu drivers;22:39
SiDiapps -> system -> hardware drivers22:39
SiDiif anything's listed there, then activate it, it'll help a lot22:39
SiDiand if theres nothing (likely if you have an Intel GPU), you'll have to wait for proper drivers from Intel22:40
SiDior try to manually edit xorg.conf22:40
SiDi!xorg22:40
ubottuThe X Window System is the part of your system that's responsible for graphical output. To restart your X, type « sudo /etc/init.d/?dm restart » in a console - To fix screen resolution or other X problems: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/Config/Resolution22:40

dylan_guys, I really need help getting my computer to display 1280 x 102422:42
dylan_I can get it in winXP no problem, in xubuntu 9.04, I am not sure if my xorg.conf is correct, and I get different resolutions in the xubuntu display settings from the nvidia-settings program (two different sets of resolutions), but none of them give me the option for 1280 x 102422:43
dylan_and my manually edited xorg.conf does not work22:43
SiDidylan_: read above !22:53
SiDiwhat GPU do you have ?22:53
SiDiand are the latest drivers activated ?22:53
dylan_SidI nvidia drivers are installed22:57
dylan_Sidi its a nvidia 8800 gt video card w/ 1gb ram, and the screen is this one http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=2293955&CatId=16722:59
dylan_SiDi, I just don't know how to make a proper modeline23:00
SiDidylan_: it should just work then :/23:01
SiDiwhat's the drivers version ? 177 at least ?23:01
SiDii can't remember about modelines for xorg.conf though. Too tired for that.23:02
dylan_SiDi I am just used jockey-gtk23:02
dylan_er I just used23:02
SiDiWhat version does it say you have ?23:02
SiDiIf you're on 8.10+ the drivers should be recent enough anyways23:02
dylan_SiDi,  I freshly installex xubuntu 9.04,23:04
dylan_I just dont understand how something SO SIMPLE in XP takes weeks to get working in Ubuntu23:08
dylan_isn;t there any way to force a resolution, or auto detect the screen ect ect. ?23:08
SiDidylan_: so simple is fast said23:10
SiDivista never managed to get my 1440x900 screen working23:10
SiDiit worked out of the box with any linux/solaris distro23:10
SiDiits just a dumb hardware recognition / driver problem. Wether you be on linux/windows won't change much, except we have more workarounds than them. But i'm not expert about xorg questions23:11
SiDifill a bug in bugs.launchpad.net about nvidia drivers, they should be able to help you get it to work quickly23:11
SiDibtw, ive got a 8800GTS on my desktop with the said 1440x900 screen :p and same drivers / distro :p and it worked directly after the install :p23:12
=== awway is now known as lukinfore
dylan_SiDi do you have one of those dvi -> vga converters so you can plug your screen into your video card ?23:20
SiDiYeh23:21
SiDiOn the same GPU+Screen :P23:21
SiDiI don't think its the problem. Nvidia made a terrible mess with the 8xxx / 9xxx gpus, its possible its not recognising the card properly. You could try #nvidia or #xorg or bug some people who maintain this on launchpad.net23:22
SiDithey'll be more helpful than me23:22
nijmHey guys, anyone know what package the man pages for math.h and ctype.h and the like belong to? I have build-essential and gcc-doc installed but no joy23:54
