sml1226anybody use PPC? odd question? I have ps3 and wonder if this is ps3 issue/PPC issue/ or 9.04 alpha in general.00:33
viddsml1226, you should be using 9.04 release instead of Alpha =\00:34
zoredachesml1226: have you tried going to the urls your /etc/apt/sources.list mention directly?00:35
sml1226release disc won't install, black screen after kboot00:35
gamepocketsi have a ps3 and a old ppc...00:36
sml1226i have not tried to go to them, I can use some functions through terminal but others refuse to work. Also NetworkManager applet says some resources not found throughout awn install00:37
sml1226zoredache ^00:37
gamepocketsis this the first ps3 install?00:37
sml1226no I have had 8.10 (major thunar bug), 9.04 (worked but kubuntu install later ruined it), and thats it. Complete format between installs though.00:39
gamepocketshmm, i've got ubuntu 8.10 and ydl 6.0 succ installed, never tried the other distros...00:40
gamepocketsare you using the "ps3 versions" of the distros?00:41
sml1226Xubutnu 8.10 refused to work. Thunar closed every time it tried to open and icons would not stay on desktop because of it. I used 9.04 instead. Would use 8.04 but no ps3 version. Love 8.04.00:42
sml1226Yes I am using PS3 versions00:42
sml1226thought about using SUSE gnome PPC and getting PS3 addon but I'd need a dvd and a cd when I can use 1 cd for this00:43
gamepocketshmm.... i'm at a loss, i do remember somthing about the kernals... but it has been a while.00:43
gamepocketshave u tried ps3-hacks.com?00:43
sml1226No clue. How do you upgrade a distro? I could use 8.10 and upgrade to 9.04 release that way00:44
viddsml1226, from command line "sudo  do-release-upgrade "00:45
sml1226No ps3-hacks, first of all that site is full of viruses. (windows experiences) and second I don't like their setup. psubuntu is a lot better site00:45
sml1226Thanks I'll try through 8.10 then because this isn't working right. I'll try that through this screwed up 9.04 alpha first though to try it out.00:46
sml1226No luck, "command not found"00:47
viddone sec00:47
sml1226I'll try 8.10 I'll be back if this fails00:47
viddsml1226, "sudo apt-get install update-manager-core00:49
viddsml1226, then from command line "sudo  do-release-upgrade "00:49
sml1226no installation candidate00:50
viddsml1226, them im at a total loss00:51
sml12268.10 it is then see ya :(00:51
sml1226Actually I'll try 9.04 aplha and do that first thing instead of the tweaks I did00:52

mrnakeyDoes anyone know if the Xubuntu RAM recommendation is physical or logical?01:37
viddmrnakey, what do you mean?01:38
viddto the best of my knowledge, all ram is physical01:39
viddif you are refering to hd space, it doesnt matter01:39
mrnakeyI've got an OOOOOOld box running Win2k with 32MB of RAM (physical) / 256 (virtual) that I want to put Xubuntu on. The recommended RAM for Xubuntu is 128MB to install, but I'd like to know if virtual memory can cover the difference....01:42
viddmrnakey, you can try it....but i dont think it will work01:43
mrnakeysho nuff01:44
mrnakeythanks01:44
mrnakeyIs there anything else Linux-wise with lower resource needs aside with a GUI?01:48

mikechelenis there some way to control the current desktop session through vnc?04:35
pegonHi all04:36
likemindeadAhoy.04:36
pegonIn Xubuntu what is the part that controls the theme like the window manager at the top? I wanna use that when i switch to compiz but everytime I do it disables that04:37
likemindeadI'd use Emerald.04:37
pegonI am trying to disable as much as I can in compiz just want a few of the effects but not all the slow down I keep getting from it04:38
likemindeadSettings>Window Manager & Settings>Window Manager Tweaks04:40
likemindeadAlso, Settings>Appearance04:40
pegonWindow Manager Tweaks doesn't open04:46
likemindeadStrange.04:48
likemindeadIt should.04:48
pegonI have no idea04:48
likemindeadpegon, you can "sudo apt-get install emerald" and then get many themes from xfce-look.org and other sites.04:48
pegonhow do I change the xfce theme?04:48
pegonactually I have a different question..when I run compiz moving windows etc are smooth and that..when I have compiz off they are jerky...is 3d or something not enabled on xubuntu by default?04:50
likemindeadWhat video hardware do you have?04:51
pegonati radeon 310004:52
likemindeadI was worried you'd say ATI.04:52
pegonits onboard.. <---using laptop04:52
likemindeadhttp://onlyubuntu.blogspot.com/2009/05/howto-enable-ati-unsupported-cards-in.html04:53
likemindeadBest I can do for you. I stay away from ATI. Too much headache.04:53
pegondid you post that?04:56
likemindeadNo. But coincidentally, I just had it pop up on my Google Reader. ;D04:56
likemindeadVia Linux Today, I believe.04:56
pegonwas asking cause that was just posted today lol04:57
likemindeadYeah. I'm an RSS & news junkie.04:57
pegonlol04:57
likemindeadIf you get your ATI drivers working well, Compiz Fusion should shape up nicely.04:58
likemindead(I'd still change the window manager to Emerald, but that's just my preference.)04:58
pegondo you use compiz?05:00
likemindeadI did in 8.04 & 8.10, but since I installed 9.04 I just haven't felt like it.05:01
likemindeadIt's fun, but mostly pointless.05:01
likemindeadI've gotten to where I prefer simplicity and speed.05:01
pegonI like it without it..but...i like a few of the effects like the zoom desktop and like 2 other thats all I want.I don't want the cube and all that lol05:02
likemindeadSort out your ATI and you should be set.05:03
likemindeadThere should be plenty of tutorials out there.05:03
pegonI can run compiz fusion and all that no problem already...I am just saying when its of stuff seems to skip and leave trails and that05:03
likemindeadSmall video driver issues, right.05:04
pegonYeah...okay I did that and it didn't change my xorg.conf or anything is it suppose to or did it just fix the bugs?05:04
likemindeadEven my old GeForce has some of that, or did in Intrepid.05:04
likemindeadDunno. Probably need to restart.05:05
pegonokay brb restarting05:05
pegonbk05:08
svensko-netbookhello, i seem to be having a problem with my acer aspire one and xubuntu 9.04... i attempted connecting an external monitor and restarting... i end up with the external monitor mirroring my netbook, i then went to the settings -> display however only a single screen was listed, however I now have the option to change the resolution to 1440x900 (resolution of the external monitor)... what confuses me even more is the fact that08:04
svensko-netbook under  desktop settings, it gives me the option to change to different backgrounds on my netbooks screen and my external monitor... is there something special i need to do to have the external monitor picked up under the display settings? Thanks!08:04
svensko-netbookjust for reference, xrandr DOES pick up the external monitor, if i try to set it up so that the desktop is spread across both monitors, xrandr complains about there not being enough virtual space and suggests changing my xorg.conf (which, from what i can tell, is no longer used)08:06
mikechelensvensko-netbook, what is the notebook and video card models?08:48
svensko-netbookmikechelen, it's an acer aspire one and it has the intel GMA 95008:52
mikechelensvensko-netbook, been hearing alot of issues with intel gfx lately, does it use a proprietary drivers like nvidia or ati?08:54
svensko-netbooknot sure... i've had it work in ubuntu 9.04 AFAIK, it seems to be an issue with the XFCE display program... like i said, xrandr picks it up, and the background settings also detect two monitors08:55
mikechelenhmm, im not sure how to detect the displays09:15
mikechelenplugging in the tv out on my nvidia card, it does not seem to be detected09:15
TheSheepxrandr --auto09:15
svensko-netbookTheSheep, i mean in the display setting in the settings menu...09:17
svensko-netbooki only get a "Screen1", what you suggested just mirrors my netbook's screen onto the external09:17
mikechelenxrandr shows no output09:18

mikechelenwhat about for tv out?09:20
svensko-netbooki tried adding Virtual 2624 900 to it and xrandr still complained09:20
TheSheepmikechelen: it's like another monitor to X09:20
mikechelenTheSheep, any way to enable without hand editing xorg.conf?09:23
TheSheepmikechelen: what graphics card?09:24

mikechelenxrandr seems to have no effect09:26
TheSheepmikechelen: ah, if you have nvidia, tehn just use nvidia-settings09:29
TheSheepmikechelen: if you run it as root, it can edit xorg.conf for you09:30
premorphoshey has any one figured out how to get a mic working under alsa09:32
mikechelenTheSheep, for some reason "detect displays" in nvidia server settings only sees my main monitor09:33

mandragora22COOL, couse u see after upgrading to jaunty i stop being able to edit my main menu15:17
mandragora22now I've got the default menu and changeless15:18
charlie-tcaBecause jaunty 9.04 uses Xfce 4.6, which has no menu editor15:18
charlie-tcaXfce 4.8 will have the menu editor, and it will work15:19
mandragora22so I won't be able to edit my menu unless I change Xfce?15:19
charlie-tcaNot right. THere are ways to edit the menus now, and they work.15:19

charlie-tcaHello, SiDi17:28
SiDiheya charlie-tca :)17:33
raevolare there any thoughts about putting a different menu system into xubuntu? something along the lines of Ubuntu System Panel?18:17
charlie-tcanot really.18:18
charlie-tcaThe menu system used is fully compatible with Xfce, which is the desktop environment used.18:18
raevoltrue, but the menu in 4.6 is pretty awful18:19
charlie-tcaI did not think so. But we all have opinions18:19
raevolgranted18:19
raevoli wonder though if xubuntu might spearhead an effort to make the linux UI more user friendly, in a way that gnome and kde have routinely failed to do18:20
raevolputting in a functional, customizable menu would be huge strides in that direction18:20
charlie-tcalinux encompasses many distributions and desktops.18:21
charlie-tcaas for user friendly, gnome is easier for the new user than Xfce18:21
raevolfor the non-computer literate user, i agree18:22
raevolbut for people who actually like to use their computers, i strongly disagree18:22
raevolgnome constantly hides things from users, forcing them to deal with crappy UI choices the devs made18:23
raevolKDE is just a joke18:23
raevolXFCE is actually functional, the only thing i find lacking in it is the menu and file manager, though i consider thunar a seperate project18:23
raevoladditionally, xfce is lightweight, i know you're already a fan, that's why you're here18:24
raevolbut one of the huge strengths i saw in xfce is how customizable it is18:24
raevolthe menu is no longer customizable, which is a huge blow to how good xfce was18:25
charlie-tcaOf course it is customizable18:25
raevolas a distribution, xubuntu has the freedom to package in a different menu18:25
raevoli don't consider editing system text files customizable, i consider that a pain in the ass18:25
charlie-tcaIt is much more difficult to package a different menu and make it compatible that to use the one that Xfce supplies18:25
raevoli think it'd be worth the effort though18:26
raevolMint does it already, for example18:26
charlie-tcaokay18:26
raevoli think it's important to give users as many options as possible in configuring their own systems, but to make configuring those options as easy as possible18:28
charlie-tcawhich is why there are many desktop environments, window managers, and distros to pick from18:29
raevoleveryone likes their UI a little different, but i think everyone that hasn't lived in a server terminal for their whole life prefers easy configuration tools18:29
raevoli agree :) but none are perfect18:29
raevoli think the perfect system would be lightweight but fully functional and configurable18:30
charlie-tcaI think the perfect system will stagnate and die18:30
charlie-tcaWhen you hit perfection, you no longer have a goal18:31
raevolwell, i think your goal can always be to be better than you are now18:47
raevolwhich is exactly what i am getting at, xubuntu currently has a crap menu that it inherited from xfce (which itself is good) and i think it'd be cool to get another menu into it18:47
charlie-tcaThanks for the suggestion.18:48
raevolcharlie-tca: are you an xubuntu dev?18:51
charlie-tcano18:51
raevolah cool18:52
charlie-tcabut I discuss things with them daily18:52
raevolyou must feel important18:52
charlie-tcano18:52
charlie-tcabut I think I can pass suggestions to them18:53
charlie-tcaI am simply Xubuntu Quality Assurance Leader18:54
raevoli guess in the end if a good menu system gets packaged into ubuntu i can just install it myself, so it doesn't really matter18:54
raevolyou're QA leader and you're not concerned about the menu?18:54
charlie-tcaXfce 4.8 will have the menu editor, and will allow editing using alacarte18:54
raevolyes and when is 4.8 coming out?18:55
charlie-tcaI never said I wasn't concerned with it18:55
charlie-tca4.8 release dates are not known yet18:55
raevolso you're just going to sit on your hands until then?18:55
charlie-tcaI just don't believe lack of an editor makes it useless18:56
raevolit's not useless, but it's less useful than it was previously18:56
charlie-tcaI also don't believe the menu is awful18:56
charlie-tcaThe previous editor was about the most useless thing ever created18:56
raevolreally? i liked it18:57
charlie-tcaNot having it is not really a drawback18:57
raevolit let me do what i wanted to18:57
charlie-tcaIt did not really do much18:57
raevolnow i can't do anything at all18:57
Myrttiwhat a fruitful conversation18:57
raevoli don't see how giving you the ability to completely customize your menu is "not really do(ing) much"18:57
charlie-tcaSure you can, http://wiki.xfce.org/howto/customize-menu18:57
raevoloh please :)18:57
charlie-tcaIt never allowed you to completely customize the menu.18:58
charlie-tcaYou still had to edit files to get things to work18:58
raevolit allowed me to do everything i wanted18:58
charlie-tcaThat is one person18:58
SiDiraevol: dont tell me you could *edit* the menu with the 4.4 editor, that'd be a lie18:58
TheSheepcharlie-tca: you always have to change files to customize things, otherwise how would it be permanent?18:58
raevoli agree it  wasn't perfect18:58
charlie-tcaIt did not allow everyone to do everything18:58
SiDiit was just a big "import system menu" thing18:58
=== Rafik_ is now known as Rafik
raevolbut it was more than we have now18:58
SiDinow, you still can edit your menus manually, and the menu editor will come as soon as its finished coding18:59
raevolSiDi: no, you're right, but what do we have now?18:59
Myrttiso, I have cupcakes18:59
SiDiraevol: you can use alacarte for anything apart showing/hiding menu entries, which you can then do manually18:59
raevolat the moment? really?18:59
SiDithe xfce menu editor will come as soon as developers will have had time for writing it.18:59
charlie-tcaMyrtti: can I have one?18:59
SiDiMyrtti: no thanks, just ate too much :/19:00
raevolSiDi: alacarte does work now? last i heard it didn't19:00
SiDiraevol: feel free to try it. Last time i played with it, it was modifying the title/icon of the entries19:01
SiDithe other edits were written in the desktop files with GNOME specific parameters though, and thats why they diidnt have any impact over xfce19:01
raevoli'll have to try it19:02
raevolthanks19:02
raevolwell, i've caused enough ruckus for one day :P thanks guys19:03
DetroitLibertyPehas anyone used evolution to access the Microsoft Exchange Server?19:29
ChopiI tried to instal a new Theme to my Xubuntu by extracting a .tar.gz to the "themes" folder, but its saying "permission denied".Has somebody a idea, why he is doing it? (Sorry for the bad english, its not my first language)20:20
DetroitLibertyPechopi : because you do not have permission to access that directory20:21
charlie-tcaYou need to use sudo, since themes is owned by root20:21
DetroitLibertyPeso sudo mv /full-file-name-etc /full-directorytreee-to-themes20:22
MoonTigerhi guys :)20:22
DetroitLibertyPehi MoonTiger20:22

MoonTigerhas anybody else noticed that the network manager doesn't actually give a signal strength indication anymore?20:22
Chopithanks detroit20:25
SiDiChopi: you can also create a ".themes" folder (dont forget the .) in your home folder, and put the themes there20:26
SiDiMoonTiger: it does here20:26
ChopiSiDi,i can't create a new folder in my home directory,too20:27
MoonTigersidi, really?20:28
MoonTigermine stays on the full signal strength always20:28
charlie-tcaMoonTiger: maybe you got a real good signal, then20:28
MoonTigerhmmmmmmmm i wonder if its the icon theme20:28
MoonTigerhehe i thought that but 62% shouldnt be a full signal indicator20:28
MoonTigerthnx anyways :)20:30
charlie-tcait could be the theme. Or the percentages used to display the signal20:30
liarhey, can anyone help me? i have a problem with x, every app wich tries to draw images crashes: http://paste.ubuntu.com/176458/ i have got an acer aspire one with xubuntu 9.04 installed20:31
liarwich tries to draw videos*20:31
charlie-tcaHow much memory and what video card?20:32
charlie-tca"insufficient resources for operation" may be an out of memory error20:32
liarMem:   1532472k total,  1448504k used,    83968k free, video card is: intel GMA 94520:35
charlie-tcaI am thinking the video card is the issue.20:37
charlie-tcaintel 9x5 has issues in 9.04, if I recall correctly20:38
charlie-tcaThere is no fix yet, that I know of, except to downgrade to 8.1020:39
liarusing a different driver would not be a good idea or?(because of the packagemanger?)20:40
charlie-tcaYou can try different drivers, but intel support with the xorg being used is not real solid20:42
charlie-tca!info xorg20:44
ubottuxorg (source: xorg): X.Org X Window System. In component main, is optional. Version 1:7.4~5ubuntu18 (jaunty), package size 1 kB, installed size 24 kB20:44
charlie-tcaliar: are you using compiz?20:45
liarit is installed but i am not using it20:47
liarwith xfce20:48
charlie-tcaI wonder if something in it is causing the issues...20:50
sinWhat program do I use if I wanna play .mkv files in Xubuntu? VLC and MPlayer just shut down.21:31
jklive been having an issue with abiword since I removed close to 300 orphaned packages with synaptic, ever since abiword hangs on startup. problem persists even after complete reinstallation, any ideas?21:33
charlie-tcaRemove abiword completely, then restart the system. Then reinstall abiword21:46
SiDiwhy restart the system ?21:51
charlie-tcabecause that makes sure all the pieces that aren't removed get removed, including the config files for abiword21:55
jklok, i'll try that. thanks22:01
TheSheepcharlie-tca: it does not22:02
charlie-tcaokay, Thanks22:03

liar_charlie-tca: it was because of the intel driver bug, i was able to install a old driver version through the packagemanger so everything should be fine(everything seems to work again), thanks^^23:11
charlie-tcaGreat! You are welcome23:11
