draikSetiAmon: What icons were they?04:21
SetiAmonI'll figure that out i guess.how about just moving widgets around,i can't drag and move the widgets were I want them?04:28
SetiAmonam i connected04:29
SetiAmonjust the ones from my kde desktop04:31
SetiAmonI closed them i guess.new to kde is all04:31
SetiAmonI'll figure it out04:31
SetiAmonbut you know whats really irritating me04:31
SetiAmonI can't drag and drop my widgets anywhere?I don't like this kde just puts the widgets were it wants to,how to i move them?04:32
draikSetiAmon: Be sure your widgets are unlocked. Go to the top right and click on the cashew. Choose unlock widgets. To move them, put your mouse over the widget and give it a second or two for the tab to show on the side. From there, drag and drop to your heart's content.04:36
SetiAmonit says "lock" so i imagine it is unlocked04:40
SetiAmonOh wait04:40
SetiAmonStill04:41
SetiAmonStill not letting me move my icons around,widgets04:41
arkanabarwhere are you grabbing them?  I have to grab my unified system monitor widget by its edge.04:43
meddle_hello04:44
arkanabarthe weather and analog clock widgets I can grab anywhere.04:44
SetiAmonDraik that is what i was doing just not "sticking" to any of the panels04:44
arkanabaroh, I have them on the desktop.04:44
meddle_hay alguien hay ???04:44

SetiAmonthe widgets are going BEHIND the panels?04:45
SetiAmonWhat i'm trying to do is to place my widgets in the panels, move them around, should be simple but the widgets are going behind the panels, not sticking to it and the widgets on the panel are not letting me move them around, everything is unlocked04:46
arkanabarI just figured that out.  Open Panel Settings, and then you can left-click your widgets to drag them around.04:47
arkanabarSetiAmon: is that working for  you as well?04:48
SetiAmonnope04:49
SetiAmonI open panel settings and all,but the widgets are not clicking into the panels,i can't move the ones on the panel either04:49
SetiAmonU neab04:49
SetiAmonI mean04:49
SetiAmonI can move the widgets04:49
SetiAmonbut they are not docking04:49
arkanabarclick them again to release them, maybe?04:50
SetiAmonHmm no i see what you mean by panel settings.i can move things around a little04:51
SetiAmonbut i can't for instance drag them off the panel onto the desk top or from the desktop to the panel.or really much flexiability with moving them around the panel04:51
arkanabarnope.  you have to use the desktop cashew in the upper right corner to summon desktop widgets.04:52
SetiAmonHmm.and what about dragging icons off the menu's and onto the desktop like firefox, seems I can't do that either?04:53
SetiAmonshesh maybe i should go back to gnome04:53
arkanabarno, you click the cashew, select "add widgets", pick the one you want to add out of the list, and click "add" at the bottom04:54
arkanabarseriously, the best reason to use either KDE or Gnome is that you like it better.04:55
SetiAmonits just a little frusterating04:55
arkanabarI used KDE 3.x happily for years in PCLOS.  I used Gnome happily in Mint 6.004:55
SetiAmonKDE looks better but i think gnome handles better so far04:55
arkanabarLearning is often frustrating.04:55

arkanabarI'm actually interested in trying all the little casual games that KDE has over gnome.04:56
arkanabarI'll have to install them, they aren't in Kubuntu by default.04:56
ronixgnome vs kde ilike gnome04:56
SetiAmongnome is pretty ugly though04:57
arkanabarI like em both, but I am *really* lookin forward to Lubuntu.04:57

Demonicdata4 Gigs ram here,but 250 gigs of hd05:04
draikarkanabar: I saw that and I just knew that's not right and figured you meant GB, not MB05:04

DemonicdataI haven't really had any problem,I had to download and install beta flash and beta x-fi drivers but thats it05:05
arkanabarheh, the RAM limit includes the ram on your GPU.05:05
draikWell, 2GB packages were on sale and it blurred out the fact that my computer can only read 3GB (mobo 4GB).05:05

arkanabarThere's a bunch of distros now that have 64 bit kernels.05:06
arkanabaris there a RAM usage widget?  I haven't found one yet.05:07

Demonicdatai can' try out a few more desktop managers also, whats xubuntu windows manager?Xtce right?05:09
draikxfce, yes.05:09
arkanabarit's a total pig.  The gnome desktop is much more cleanly implemented.05:10

arkanabaryou're better off with a minimal install and adding vanilla xfce.05:10
arkanabarthere was a howto a week or two ago in distrowatch weekly.05:11
Betushola05:13
DemonicdataI'm downloading xubuntu as i'm going to reinstall linux in a about 11 days anyhow to place full disk encryption05:13
arkanabaror you can just sudo apt-get install xubuntu-desktop05:13
Demonicdatathats what i'm doing05:14
DemonicdataI'm thinking of moving to fedora 11 though05:14
arkanabarI plan to try that out too.  I'll probably go gnome again, or maybe lxde.  there are keybinding issues when playing WoW in xfce.05:16
Demonicdatathat sucks05:16
DemonicdataAt least you got wow working,i haven't played any games in linux05:16
Demonicdatahaven't really felt to,but if i do its good that there are gamers05:16
arkanabarimagine you're playing a rogue on desktop 3, and you hit ctrl-f1 to stealth... and you switch to desktop 1 instead.05:16
DemonicdataYeah i'm going to go with gnome also,it doesn't look at nice as kde but kde seems uh convoluted so far.Downloading Xubuntu05:17
Demonicdataseeing how tha XTCE is,is there any other desktop packages I can try out?05:18
DemonicdataSo to play WoW do you use Cadega?05:18
arkanabaryou might try CrunchBang linux.  It's another openbox desktop, respun from ubuntu.05:18
arkanabarno, vanilla development Wine works, especially if you read up at winehq.org05:19
DemonicdataI haven't used wine really05:19
DemonicdataIts kind of a security risk isn't it05:19
arkanabarif it didn't, I might consider cedega or crossover games.05:19
DemonicdataI downloaded leaktest from grc to see if it would work, clicking on it brought up wine which it called out and revealed my ip05:20
arkanabarppl have gotten windows viruses in wine.05:20
DemonicdataHAH what does that do?05:20
Demonicdatathe main reason i went back to linux is i had to reformat my HD 5 times and install xp over and over again,I lost gigs of music,books,videogames05:20
arkanabarhasn't happened to me.  I keep my firewall up, and don't do any surfing or email in wine.05:20
DemonicdataI found out the virus infection kept coming from someones Ipod they kept coming over and using our computer, imagine that05:21
arkanabarJeez, what AV were you using?05:21
DemonicdataTrend micro05:21
* arkanabar shrugs05:21
Demonicdatawhich was pretty good.also had a bunch of spyware programs05:21
arkanabarI used to use AVG free and Avast.  How did Trend manage to not have the definition of this virus, or not check docked ipods?05:22
Demonicdatain the end i had pirated a dozen spyware programs, spyware doctor,ca pest patrol etc,all the best ones but i said screw this, constantly scanning for viruses, updating, most of my startup programs were antivirus05:22
arkanabarmost of my win2kpro software was security hotfixes.05:23
DemonicdataIt didn't keep up with the virus,it spread fast, infected everything.I kept clicking "clean" but it couldn't clean it05:23
DemonicdataSo whats so bad about XTCE?05:23
arkanabarbleah!  one AV shield is not enough, that's why I had the top 2 free ones.05:23
arkanabarOh, xfce has plenty of fans, it's just not for me.05:24
DemonicdataArkanabar:yeah thats why i reformated my hd and installed linux.05:24
arkanabarbut xubuntu-desktop is another matter.  IMX, it's crap.05:24
arkanabarin fact, I know of nothing it does as well as ubuntu-gnome.05:25
DemonicdataWhy I'm almost done with downloading xubuntu desktop05:25
arkanabarymmv, but I really didn't like it.05:25
DemonicdataDig i'll try it out then go back to gnome till fedora, and when i get fedora i'll get the Gnome manager05:25
arkanabarhttp://distrowatch.com:80/weekly.php?issue=2009042705:26
arkanabarthat compares xubuntu w/ debian + vanilla xfce.05:27
arkanabarthe week after, they did the howto for adding vanilla xfce to minimal jaunty.05:27
arkanabarI'd probably be happier w/ minimal jaunty + vanilla KDE than kubuntu, but I can't get any of my USB ports to go active prior to boot.05:29
arkanabarand I don't have anything I can burn a minimal or alternate install ISO onto.05:29

Mamarokworks here10:57
toby_What am I looking for? ~/.trash?10:57
Mamarokbut then, I added the shortcut10:57
Mamaroktoby_: I guess it was not set to delete to avoid people deleting stuff too easily10:58
toby_Mamarok: should .trash exist, and should it be a directory or a symlink?10:58
Mamaroktoby_: no, the trash is .Trash with a capital T10:59
Mamaroktoby_: and it has nothing to do with a symlink, the Trash normally is there, unless you removed it10:59
Mamaroktoby_: go to the title and right click -> Edit, the type trash:/11:00
WMPMamarok: I can't compile this ;) http://wklej.org/id/94899/11:00
toby_I just created ~/.Trash but it hasn't helped. When I delete something I get a KDE notification saying "Moving, Source /home/deletedfile, destination: trash:/deletedfile11:00
MamarokWMP: I asked you before: did you look for the translator widget in the widget list on your PC?11:01
MamarokWMP: I have it here11:01
MamarokWMP: the package is called plasma-widget-translatoid and is in the repos11:02
WMPMamarok: translate widget dont work with polish language11:02
toby_trash:/ shows me ~/.local/share/Trash/files/11:02
toby_Mamarok: There's a load of old files in there11:03
Mamaroktoby_: that's your trash, yes11:03
Mamaroktoby_: how did you try to delete, was the file selected or did you just point to it with the mouse?11:04
Mamaroktoby_: just pointing on it with the mouse is not enough11:05
Mamarokas I said, works for me when I have the file selected11:05
toby_Either right-click "move to wastebin" on the file, or select the file and press the "del" key11:05
toby_Neither work, both just give me another KDE notification that sits there at 0%11:05
Mamaroktoby_: you must have changed something then, a Global Shortcut or so, it works by default here11:06
Mamaroktoby_: which KDE?11:06
toby_4.2.311:06
toby_Mamarok:  Aha! Breakthrough!11:06
Mamarokyep, just tried on the other PC with 4.2.3, worksforme11:06
toby_I always just cancelled those stuck notifications. This time I left one for several minutes and got a dialogue: "The wastebin has reached its maximum size!11:07
toby_Cleanup the wastebin manually.11:07
toby_Doh :)11:07
Mamarokright, there is an option to empty the trash, would sometimes be a good idea...11:08
Mamaroktoby_: put the trashcan widget in your panel, the right click on it, no need to open Dolphin to do so then11:08
toby_Mamarok: After a mammoth cleanup it works again now. Thanks for the pointer11:23

Nataouzehello15:20
NataouzeI am having an issue with the network management plasmoid: I fixed a manual ip configuration, but when connection comes, the ip different, probably one from dhcp15:21
ign0ramusNataouze, your ISP assigned you a dynamic IP, and you're setting network manager to use a fixed IP?15:22
NataouzeI am behind a router15:23
NataouzeI want a fixed IP inside my local network15:23
ign0ramusNataouze, iirc, dhcp won't change your network 192.168.x.x addresses...15:24
NataouzeI fixed my IP to 192.168.0.3, but I actually keep getting 192.168.0.11 ...15:24
BluesKajNasj, if you want help , please ask your question clearly so your situation is understood , don't assume we know your exact situation.15:25
ign0ramusNataouze, so your router is assigning 192.168.0.11... why not set your ip to what the router is assigning?15:25
NasjOk15:25
NasjI think ive already found my answer15:26
NataouzeBecause it should be a printer for this address, moreover I have some NAT redirections for the IP I want15:26
ign0ramusNataouze, i see now... i don't have much experience with this.  hopefully someone else that has ran into this issue can help.15:27
NataouzeAnyway, with any other tool or OS, I can set the IP I want, I just think I don't understand something about this plasmoid :)15:27
NataouzeThanks for your attention ign0ramus ^^15:27

ign0ramusShadoze, not sure what operation it calls, but the syntax would be like "msiexec /i msxml3.msi"15:30
ign0ramusShadoze, so actually, yeah, i believe it does ;))15:31

NataouzeA friend of mine using gentoo told me he went from 30s to 22s for boot since he changed to ext415:46
BluesKajNataouze, isn't there a setting in your router for static IP , which is the static default for the router ?15:46
Shadozei can see it being handy to alot of people, as google seraching about it just brings up the bugreports really15:46
ShadozeMy boot time is under 10 seconds15:46
ign0ramusShadoze, thanks, but i don't know if everyone wants the same kind of behavior... for some reason, people actually like kscreenshot (not sure why...)15:46
ShadozeWell, you could have a very small intro saying what it does and how its really ideal for take alot of screenshots at the same time15:47
ign0ramusShadoze, although, i do pride myself on the naming scheme... i was trying to find a way to create screenshots with a unique output for a name, which is where I implemented the "naming by the unix second" deal.  I was proud of this, because this feature is not even listed in the scrot documentation... i just took an educated guess, and it worked :)15:48
Shadozehehe :P I find it very handy as i needed to take some screenshots for winehq on a full screengame and my printscreen button didn't work and open ksnapshot whilst playing the game was really impracticle for grabbing headshots (lol) scrot does the trick ;)15:51
NataouzeBluesKaj: Actually I just realized that my DHCP gives addresses from 192.168.0.10 to 192.168.0.15, and my printers are in this range, I'm not sure if it can create problems15:51
Nataouze(my printers have a fixed IP: .10 and .11)15:52
ign0ramusShadoze, glad it works well for you.  i also take tons of screenshots, and ksnapshot is intrusive (to me anyway), and all i was using it for was to save a screenie to the Desktop anyway for immediate posting or quick editing.  The scrot command automates this process nicely.15:52
ign0ramusShadoze, i had originally experimented with imagemagick, which was the accepted recommendation for cli screenshots, but it doesn't work well in a Plasma environment (some windows are not caputred).  scrot handles this with ease :)15:54
ShadozeYeah :) I heard someone talking about there imagemagick woes yesterday15:54
=== yuriy_ is now known as yuriy
ShadozeAnd how it wasn't capturing all of plasma15:55
ign0ramusShadoze, imagemagick is a great app, with tons of features, but it doesn't work well for capturing plasma stuff15:55
ign0ramusShadoze, one cool thing about imagemagick i did ... last year, my stepfather bought a beautiful 1941 Pontiac antique car.  I found someone online who had posted the original owner's manual for the car, but it was single pages in .jpg format...15:56
ign0ramusShadoze, so i captured all the pics with DownThemAll, and used imagemagick to combine all the jpgs in order into a single .pdf that was now an electronic full owner's manual that could be printed out and bound like the original :)15:57
ign0ramusShadoze, so i don't dislike imagemagick, but for plasma, it needs work :)15:58
ShadozeHeh that sounds pretty handy ;) I've never used imagemagic myself but it does sound cool15:59
ShadozeHavn't heard of downthemall either lol16:00
ign0ramusShadoze, that's just a firefox add-on (download manager - good for downloading multiple files simultaneously)16:00
ign0ramusShadoze, for example, you find a site that has tons of awesome wallpapers... dTA can collect all of them with two clicks16:01
ShadozeI'm going to downlaod that16:01
Shadozeyou've conviced me ;)16:01
ShadozeThe amount of time ive manually had to do it16:01
ign0ramusShadoze, i don't use it all that often, but when you find yourself with something like the above situation, its a godsend16:02

ShadozeOpenoffice is fine for it's word, spreadsheet, and powerpoint clone :)16:05
ign0ramusShadoze, there were some .dll's that needed to be registered, and some java .dll had to be added to system3216:05
ign0ramusShadoze, i like OOo as well, but I need MS Exchange for work16:05
ign0ramusShadoze, i just run it in VirtualBox, though ;)16:05

Shadozebut i feel it's a bit of a pisstake having to do that just for visio or access :916:06
ign0ramusShadoze, also, my crappy lexmark printer is a 'paperweight' using Linux16:06
ign0ramusShadoze, yeah, but i've found wine a little lacking - apps don't always render properly, and sometimes features (as you've noticed) are missing completely.  Vbox was the best solution for me in that case.16:07

Barridusscale?22:38
xjjkyou can go into System Settings > Desktop > Desktop Effects22:38
xjjkand set so it happens when you go to a screen edge22:38
UnksiBarridus: try pushing the cursor through upper left corner for expose22:38
xjjkor, set a hotkey for it22:38
Unksithats the default for it22:39
Barridusah damn22:39
xjjkUnksi: thanks, I changed the default22:39
Barridusit must be set to a screen edge then22:39
xjjkBarridus: it's called Scale in Compiz, it's called something else in KDE22:39
Barridussince you mentioned it could be i tested the edges22:39
Barridusit must default to the upper corner22:39
xjjkBarridus: you can change the hotkey, or which corner/edge activates it22:39
Barridusyeah22:40
Mamarokoh, that's the Desktop Grid :)22:40
Barridusi just didn't know what it was called22:40
MamarokBarridus: ^^22:40
xjjkMamarok: AFAIK it's not the deskop grid...22:40
Barridusnow that i know what it's set to (it appeared to be random before) i'll prolly just keep it the way it is22:40
Barriduscould be handy XD22:40
Unksiyeah it is :)22:40
xjjkDesktop grid zooms out desktops22:40
xjjkScale/whatever we're talking about zooms out applications22:41
xjjkon the current desktop22:41
Mamarokxjjk: no, it displays all open windows in a grid22:41
xjjkMamarok: that's not desktop grid22:41
Mamarokxjjk: what you mean is the Desktop Flip22:41
xjjkMamarok: I just set "desktop grid" to an edge now22:41
xjjkand it's different than what we're talking about22:41
Mamarokxjjk: yeah, but that's what Barridus is talking about22:42
DarthGeekI still have no idea what's wrong in the line... I have "deb http://ppa/launchpad.net/kubuntu-ppa/ubuntu jaunty main"22:42
DarthGeekno22:42
DarthGeekit's22:42
xjjkMamarok: I think Barridus is talking about the Expose-like zooming out of applications, not desktops22:42
xjjkMamarok: in System Settings it's just called "Present Windows"22:42
Barridusyeah this is an app switcher not desktop switcher22:43
DarthGeek"deb http://ppa/launchpad/net/kubuntu-ppa/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main"22:43
DarthGeekmeh, "launchpad.net" not "launchpad/net"22:43
MamarokDarthGeek: you seem to have another dpkg instance open:22:44
Mamarok23:35 < DarthGeek> E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)22:44
Mamarok23:35 < DarthGeek> E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?22:44
Barridusare the package dependency issues resolved for 4.2.3?22:44
MamarokBarridus: long time ago22:44
Barridusdefine "long time"22:44
DarthGeekcrap, I had Adept open22:44
MamarokBarridus: like 3 days after the first apps appeared in the PPA22:45
Barridushmm22:45
=== psytek_ is now known as valente
DarthGeekit still keeps saying "could not resolve 'ppa'"22:45
Barridusi ran into some bad issues like a week ago, Mamarok22:45
ernestoso... does anybody here have kubuntu taking almost all of their memory upon boot?  i have 1 GB of ram an jaunty just takes 700MB on its own22:46
=== shark is now known as Guest40997
UnksiDarthGeek: you have another / instead of . there?22:46
DarthGeekno22:46
DarthGeekthat was a typo here22:46
Unksiok22:46
BarridusMamarok, i assume 4.2.3 won't hit the jaunty repos, right?22:47
Mamarokernesto: what application? what does top tell you?22:47
=== yerko is now known as yerko_
MamarokBarridus: might go to the backports22:47
Guest40997can somebody help me 9.04 my taskbar dosnt load on start up ??22:47
=== yerko_ is now known as yerko__
ernestowhen i do top the applications listed don't take more than 15% of the memory22:47
ernestobut my free memory is around 300 megs... i just find it odd22:48
Barridusthen what is telling you 700mb22:48
Barriduscache, ernesto ?22:48
Mamarokernesto: so it's memory you are talking about, not CPI, right?22:48
=== Guest40997 is now known as shark
ernestosorry, CPI?22:48
MamarokCPU, sry22:49
Barridusthe extra memory is probably used as cache, ernesto22:49
ernestoyes CPU22:49
=== shark is now known as Guest6879
ernestotop does say around 700MB for cache22:49
Mamarokernesto: well, top tells you what app uses the CPU too22:49
ernestoout of curiosity what is it caching?22:49
Barridusjust random things prolly22:49
ernestothx mamarok, im familiar with that ^_^22:49
Barridusbetter than having the memory do nothing :)22:49
DarthGeekah, found the typo22:49
Barridusit'll reclaim it as needed22:49
DarthGeekthx, bye22:49
ernestoi was just concerned since the experience with ubuntu was different22:50
Mamarokernesto: Linux allways uses most of the memory if possible, else it would make no sense to have it22:50
Barridusubuntu does the same ting, ernesto22:50
Guest6879Can somebody help me 9.04 my taskbar doesn't load on start up ??22:50
Barridusit just shows you differently22:50
ernestoreally? i never bothered checking the cache portion of top22:50
MamarokGuest6879: you mean the panel?22:50
ernestoi always looked at total mem and used mem22:50
Guest6879yes22:50
BarridusGuest6879, right click on dektop, add panel?22:51
Barridusunlock widgets if need be first22:51
Guest6879i dont mean that22:51
Barridusernesto, yeah i swear :D22:51
MamarokGuest6879: what do you mean then?22:52
Barridusthen what do you mean22:52
Guest6879i have add this but if i start kubuntu new they dont load again and if ic go under systemsettings than they load sry but im german :P22:52
MamarokGuest6879: come to @kubuntu-de then22:52
ernestobtw i've been trying to find a "tutorial" page to enable compiz in kubuntu... no luck with google22:52
Mamarokarghs, #kubuntu-de I mean22:52
ernestoany page you can point me too?22:52
Guest6879ok thanks22:53
Barridusernesto, system settings-> desktop->desktop effects22:53
ernestosearching for kubuntu stuff in google is painfull... i feel like minirity... "did you mean UBUNTU?" mp da,ot >.<22:53
Mamarokernesto: there are the Desktop Effects, no need for compiz22:53
ernestoi have kwin going full blast22:53
ernestoi guess i miss compiz22:53
Barridusit's very similar in KDE22:53
Barridusjust called something different22:53
Mamarokernesto: you can do pretty much the same with Desktop Effects, you will not miss compiz22:54
Barridusernesto, yeah it has the cube and everything22:54
ernestowhat about the application switcher where all apps are circled around your screen22:55
ernestodo you know which one i am talking about?22:55
TyOK what are the commands to correct a messed up gui with huge font and small screen size?  I'm about to install Kubuntu22:55
Tyand that happens22:56
Tyso I need the commands to correct it22:56
ernestowhat firewalls do you guys use btw? anybody using guarddog by any chance?22:56
Unksijust plain iptables22:57
ernestowow hardcore ^_^22:57
* Ty wants commands! I command give me commands! muahahahahahha D:22:58
Barridusernesto, i don't think it has the ring one, it has some of the others, and one ubuntu compiz does not, iirc22:58
Barridusi haven't used gnome/compiz in a long time22:58
Unksiits not actualy that difficult if you just read some good documentation, if you have the time and will for it^22:58
ernestosay i assume you guys use ktorrent right?22:59
Barridusyeah22:59
Unksiyeah thats a really good client22:59
Barridusit blows away the GTK clients, imo22:59
Unksiyup22:59
Barridusit's basically utorrent for linux22:59
ernestowell in ubuntu after forwarding the ports and allow it in teh firewall, my GTK client would work just dandy23:00
ernestoin kubuntu however..23:00
Barridusktorrent just has some great features23:00
ernestoktorrent fails with some trackers unless i "disable" the firewall23:00
flectorTracker keeps hanging on startup.  have to sudo kill it23:00
ernestobesides forwarding the ports you set up in the configuration menu, did you guys have to do anything else?23:00
Barridusi'm of the opinion that software firewalls are essentially snake oil23:01
ernestoits driving me nuts...23:01
ernestolol.. snake oil?23:01
Barridusyeah23:01
Barriduslook at a product like zone alarm or mccaffee23:01
Barridusit'll say within a week you've been ZOMG ATTACKED 10,000 TIMES23:01
ernestolol yeah i remember... back in the day i had windoWZ machines23:02
Barridusaka snake oil23:02
ernestothey probably do that to make you feel "protected"23:03
Unksiand to create impression that they are needed more, not to say that they are useless tho^23:03
damhello Xine won't detect any of my sound drivers what do I do ??23:03
Barridusthey're useless for 99% of the people that have them XD23:03
ernestohahaha true23:03
Barridusthey won't stop a real attack23:03
Unksiyep23:04
Unksiand most people have those nat-boxes anyway23:04
Unksiso there is no direct connection^23:04
Barridusyep23:04
ernestoso i guess going back with the ktorrent issue... how many ports did you guys set up.. iptable wise for it?23:04
Barridusi just set up 2 i think23:05
Unksii have used only 1 for both tcp/udp23:05
Barridusyeh i think i have 1 for tcp, and 1 for udp, i rarely torrent that much on my linux boxes, so dunno if that's "ideal"23:05
Unksiguess it depends on the client23:06
Unksiif it wants to run each torrent on its own port or not23:06
Barridusdoes ktorrent do that23:06
Barridus?23:06
Unksino23:06
Barridusnow that it's brought up and fresh in my mind, i aughta check out my ktorrent setup23:07
rakistaYou can use Vuze but it is CPU intensive23:09
rakistaYou can use it with safepeer to protect you from the RIAA MPAA23:10
Barridusvuze can suck it23:10

Barridusernesto, yeah but i have no idea how ktorrent reports whether or not the port is blocked or not23:22
Barridusi'm assuming it is, since i'm connected to a bunch of peers and getting decent speed, but idk for sure23:23
roxanyone here23:26
LadyNikonrox: people are here now whether they can help you with your question is another issue.23:29
ShadozeHello23:31
ShadozeWhat's your problem?23:31
Shadoze@ rox and yes LadyNixon is right23:31
girohgirok need help. i had dual boot winxp & kubuntu 6.??, 7.04 and 7.10 on this desktop with no problem. now i've installed 9.04 and everything runs smooth, except that, when I restart, exiting kubuntu and going to win, the nic says "cable unplugged", and its not.23:33
Barriduseasy fix, don't boot to windows ;)23:34
girohgirturning off and on again doesnt work, and there are no lights on the nic... if I boot again to kubuntu, sometime after the nic lights starts blinking again23:35
girohgirso obviously kubuntu or linux or some module is somehow deactivating the nic23:35
dthackergirohgir: Network card works under kubuntu, does not work under windows. correct?23:35
girohgirdthacker, yep23:36
Barriduspower cycle doesn't fix?  odd.23:36
girohgirone time i solved it shutting down and completely removing the cable from the power supply, and waiting for a few minutes...23:36
girohgirwhen turned pc on, the lights were back right on POST message... but now its not working this "fix" anymore23:37
Barridusdo you have a different card to swap and test if it also does the same thing?23:37
girohgirno i havent...23:37
dthackergirohgir: I'm not aware of anything Kubuntu could change that would deactivate the card for another os.  I suggest you try to delete and re-add the card to windows.  IMO, this is not a kubuntu issue.23:37
Barridusyeah that's also my thought23:37
rakistaI had a card do that23:37
Barridusor the hardware is dying and coincidence it happened when you went to 9.0423:37
girohgirwell... maybe not kubuntu but definately linux-wise... the driver or something23:37
rakistaIt had something to do how windows handled power saving mode for the nic23:37
girohgiryou see23:38
Barridusthere's nothing linux could do to your network card that would persist beyond power shutoff....23:38
dthackergirohgir: if you boot the machine under windows, the kubuntu drivers have no effect.23:38
girohgirwhen the mobo has energy but the pc is not turned on, I should see the nic lights. normally its that way23:38
girohgirbut after going to kubuntu, when i shut down from kubuntu, it does something to the nic, that when i renergize the mobo there are no lights...23:39
girohgirand only kubuntu reactivates it23:39
girohgirim saying kubuntu but maybe its the driver btw23:39
girohgiranyway23:39
dthackergirohgir: IMO, an even stronger indication that rakista's observation about power saving mode may have something to do with it.  I suggest you update your windows drivers and look for a windows solution.23:39
girohgiris this module?23:39
rakistaYou can turn off the power saving mode in the drivers in windows through device manager23:40
girohgirdont you agree that before hitting the power button the nic lights should already be on?23:40
rakistaThat is the first thing I do with Wireless nics esp23:40
girohgirand on the POST bios message, the nic lights should already be blinking23:40
dthackergiroghir:  I don't know enough about your hardware to verify that.23:41
girohgirbut since gone from kubuntu they dont blink or light up23:41
girohgiratheros l2 onboard23:41
girohgirbut its the norm23:41
rakistaIs it a wireless nic ?23:42
girohgiri tried reinstalling win drivers23:42
girohgirno23:42
girohgirWIRED23:42
girohgirdeactivating and reactivating23:42
dthackergiroghir: if kubuntu is setting a mode on shutdown that windows is unable to revers on startup, then I don't know how to help you.23:43
girohgirrakista, WIRED nic23:43
girohgirwell23:43
girohgirdthacker, is it possible to make ubuntu not set that mode?23:44
girohgirok im gonna try removing the module or something like that23:44
girohgirI am positive that23:44
girohgirif I HARD reset the pc23:44
girohgirthe nic wont 'die'23:44
dthackergirohgir: I don't know.  I suggest a post to the questions section on launchpad23:44
girohgirhmm23:44

girohgirBarridus, pressing the reset button23:45

girohgirah ok23:48
Barridusi've never heard of this issue23:48
girohgirim gonna ask there and also gonna try removing the module here23:48
Barridusand i've had multiple dual booting machines23:49
girohgirtry to narrow it down23:49
girohgirBarridus, yeah first time ever i see this23:49
girohgiras i said23:49
girohgirfirst time i fixed it after fiddling and tweaking with the cables and everything... i turned off the power, and removed the power cable from the supply23:50
girohgirwaited many minutes23:50
girohgirand then booted to windows... but right on the post message the lights were already on23:50
girohgirnot working this time though maybe cause i hadnt waited more than a minute23:51
