AqAhow to view my ntfs drives of xp from xubuntu?10:51
knome!ntfs10:51
ubottuTo view your Windows/Mac partitions see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/AutomaticallyMountPartitions - For write access, see !NTFS-3g or !FUSE10:51
AqAknome that was easy in ubuntu10:52
knomeAqA, !fuse10:54
knomeehm,10:54
knome!fuse | AqA10:54
ubottuAqA: FUSE (Filesystem in Userspace) is a !kernel driver that allows non-root users to create their own filesystems. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Filesystem_in_Userspace for more on FUSE.  Some examples of filesystems that use FUSE are !ntfs-3g, sshfs and isofs. A full list of Filesystems that use FUSE is here:  http://fuse.sourceforge.net/wiki/index.php/FileSystems10:54
AqAi am not understanding those all :(10:54
AqAin ubuntu i just used to go to Home\ and there all my drives10:54
knomeAqA, if you want, you can use nautilus in xubuntu. it's more heavy than thunar, but it should work as in ubuntu.10:57
AqAknome, what are those things i dont know what is nautilus and thunar :-S10:58
knomeAqA, file browsers10:58
AqAwhere is thunar here10:58
knomeanywhere you browse files.10:58
AqAin thunar i dont see my ntfs10:59
knomeyes, as i said, you need nautilus to get them "easily" available10:59
AqAntfs should be at left side selections like ubuntu10:59
AqAhow to get nautilus10:59
knomeyou can ask JPohlmann for that feature10:59
knomego to synaptic, search for nautilus and install it.10:59
AqAin ubuntu 9.04 was giving that nice notifications for pidgin,,,, with black color for new messages and contacts online alerts, can i have like that in xubuntu?11:02
knomewe have disabled that by default and i don't know the procedure to get it back.11:02
JPohlmannIf you have mounted NTFS partitions, Thunar will let you browse them. Thunar has no direkt support for FUSE though. You'd have define FUSE mounts manually with an editor by editing /etc/fstab or by mounting from the command line.11:02
knomeAqA, may i ask you, why are you using xubuntu and not ubuntu if you want all the features ubuntu does?11:03
JPohlmannAqA: I think you can. Install notify-osd and make sure you remove xfce4-notifyd before.11:03
AqAxubuntu is faster ubuntu was slowest11:03
knomeAqA, if you install nautilus + all the stuff ubuntu has, xubuntu will become as slow.11:04
knomeat least almost.11:04
AqA :(11:04
AqAmy pc is not even that slower 1gb ram, 2ghz processor why these are slow for me11:04
JPohlmannThere's no way around that unfortunately.11:04
JPohlmannYeah, that doesn't sound too bad.11:04
AqAJPohlmann, how to mount ntfs?11:05
JPohlmannmount -t ntfs <device name> <mount point>11:05
JPohlmannBut that'll be read only.11:05
JPohlmannI think11:05
AqAwhat is device name and mount point11:06
th0rJPohlmann: while thunar has no direct support for fuse, you can add custom actions that will appear in the right click menu for such commands11:06
JPohlmannTrue11:07
AqAknome, i have installed nautilus with some other packages, still i dont see my partitions in thunar11:07
JPohlmannYou'll have to use Nautilus for file browsing then.11:09
AqAwao wao wao i just found network monitor option in my panel :D11:09
JPohlmannI don't recommend that.11:09
JPohlmannRemove nautilus and add a mount point for your NTFS partition to /etc/fstab.11:10
AqAJPohlmann, how to do that explain more11:10
AqAstep by step11:10
JPohlmannInstall ntfs-3g11:10
AqAok11:11
JPohlmannDone?11:11
AqAterminal said No packages will be installed, upgraded, or removed.11:11
JPohlmannOk, let me take a look.11:12
AqAsynaptic says ntfs-3g already installed11:12
JPohlmannAh, good11:13
AqAnext?11:13
JPohlmannWhat does "ls -la /dev/sd?" on the command line give you? Please paste the output on paste.ubuntu.com.11:14
zethero2how do you browse networks in Xubuntu?11:14
AqAls: cannot access /dev/sd: No such file or directory11:15
JPohlmannzethero2: No easy way to do it. You can mount network shares using gigolo though.11:15
AqAJPohlmann, out put ls: cannot access /dev/sd: No such file or directory11:16
JPohlmannAqA: "ls -la /dev/hd?" maybe?11:16
AqAJPohlmann, ls: cannot access /dev/hd: No such file or directory11:16
zethero2JPohlmann: you mean you cannot browse networks like in Ubuntu ?11:16
JPohlmannzethero2: Not with any of the core programs of Xfce at least.11:17
zethero2ok11:17
zethero2what do I need to install?11:17
JPohlmannI don't know11:17
zethero2won't bother asking why this is not a something built into the OS ...11:17
zethero2seems rather obsurd11:18
JPohlmannAqA: Ok, please post the output of "ls -la /dev/" on paste.ubuntu.com and post the link here.11:18
th0rzethero2: it is in the os...just not in xfce11:18
zethero2th0r: aka ... not fully functional in Xubuntu11:19
JPohlmannNo, it's not absurd. First, it's not a feature of the OS. And second, Xfce has a very small developer team (~6 people working on the core of it).11:19
zethero2?11:19
JPohlmannSo we just can't implement *everything*.11:19
zethero2I mean I love it .. its so fast!!!11:19
AqAJPohlmann, http://paste.ubuntu.com/179446/11:19
th0rJPohlmann: are you on the team...always wanted to thank one of you11:19
zethero2but browsing networks is pretty common no!?11:19
JPohlmannth0r: I think so, yes ;) Thanks!11:19
AqAYEs xubuntu is fast :D11:20
th0rzethero2: you can get better network browsing in xfce then in gnome using fusesmb, but it takes some work11:20
JPohlmannzethero2: It is. But it's not exactly easy to implement, I suppose.11:20
zethero2but I guess there has to be a balance between speek and features ... right ...11:20
zethero2speed*11:20
zethero2right11:20
JPohlmannAqA: Can you paste the output of "fdisk -l /dev/sda"?11:21
zethero2is this the way to go?11:21
zethero2http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=30413111:21
AqAJPohlmann, Cannot open /dev/sda11:21
AqAJPohlmann, i think last time i did not shut down my xp properly11:22
JPohlmannAqA: "sudo fdisk -l /dev/sda" then.11:22
AqAJPohlmann, http://paste.ubuntu.com/179449/11:23
zethero2ok ... so I am guessing nautilus will not work in Xubuntu?11:23
th0rzethero2: it will work, but will carry all the gnome overhead with it11:24
JPohlmannzethero2: The link looks ok, you could try that ... or try pyNeighborhood11:24
zethero2pyNeighborhood ... is that an app?11:24
zethero2th0r: right ... thought as much11:24
th0rzethero2: if you try fusesmb you should know that you will need to retrofit libsmbclient to 3.0.28a11:24
th0rzethero2: I had to search a week to find that one11:25
JPohlmannAqA: Now open /etc/fstab in an editor (as root).11:25
zethero2th0r: ok ,,, whatever that meant .. ha ... pretty much a noob here ... only using Linux for 2 years or so11:25
th0rzethero2: the new libsmbclient breaks fusesmb...so you need to download an older one and install it11:25
AqAJPohlmann, give command with editor and as root user i have forgotten :-S11:26
JPohlmannzethero2: Yes, pyNeighborhood is an application.11:26
th0rzethero2: if you google 'fusesmb libsmbclient' it should get yo uto more info11:26
JPohlmannAqA: Try "sudo gedit /etc/fstab" from the terminal.11:26
AqAJPohlmann, sudo: gedit: command not found11:26
zethero2th0r: ok well I think I will try that other mentioned ap then first ...11:26
JPohlmannAqA: Right, haha. You're using Xubuntu after all ...11:27
JPohlmannAqA: Try "sudo mousepad /etc/fstab".11:27
zethero2so what makes Xubuntu so fast?11:27
knomeJPohlmann.11:27
knome;>11:27
th0rzethero2: among other things...the lack of network browsing <smile>11:27
AqArat makes xubuntu fast light weight11:28
zethero2ha11:28
JPohlmannWell, basically ...11:28
zethero2no fair11:28
AqAJPohlmann, opened text editor11:28
JPohlmannSmall team, fewer applications and libraries, simple foundations (no Mono, few bindings, mainly just C code), less features.11:28
JPohlmannWorking on the features though ;)11:29
zethero2ok11:29
AqAoh i never thought C is that powerful11:29
zethero2would desktop effects work?11:29
th0rJPohlmann: a suggestion...keep the features optional like the custom commands in thunar11:29
JPohlmannAqA: Well, on top of assembler, C is *the* foundation for most other programming languages.11:30
JPohlmannth0r: That works sometimes but not always.11:30
JPohlmannAqA: Try adding a line like this to your /etc/fstab:11:31
JPohlmann/dev/sda1 /media/sda1 ntfs auto,defaults,user,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 111:31
th0rJPohlmann: I know....but I stick with xfce for thunar and the custom commands...I love that idea11:31
th0rJPohlmann: and I certainly don't need transparent windows...I have a hard enough time seeing the screen at my age11:31
AqAth0r, what are custom commands11:32
JPohlmannWhere /dev/sda1 is the NTFS partition you want to mount, /media/sda1 is the mount point (you probably want to rename it to something like /media/windows). Use gid=1000 though.11:32
AqAJPohlmann, which line to add?11:32
JPohlmannAqA: At the end of the file.11:32
AqAJPohlmann, this line? /dev/sda1 /media/sda1 ntfs auto,defaults,user,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 111:32
JPohlmannYeah11:32
JPohlmannWith the changes I suggested.11:32
JPohlmannOh, and try to add uid=1000 as well (replace 1000 of "echo $UID" gives you a different number).11:33
AqA /dev/sda1 /media/windows ntfs auto,defaults,user,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46 0 1,uid=1000 JPohlmann11:34
JPohlmannNo11:34
JPohlmann/dev/sda1 /media/windows ntfs auto,defaults,user,nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=1000,uid=1000 0 111:34
AqAadded11:35
AqAsave document now?11:35
JPohlmannYep11:35
JPohlmannThen create /media/windows ("sudo mkdir /media/windows && chown 1000.1000 /media/windows")11:35
AqAJPohlmann, chown: changing ownership of `/media/windows': Operation not permitted11:37
JPohlmannAqA: Right, put a sudo in front of the second command.11:38
JPohlmannMy bad11:38
AqAJPohlmann, i did not know that i am xubuntu of ur hands :-S if u come to my office i shall serve u tea11:38
AqAsudo mkdir /media/windows && sudo chown 1000.1000 /media/windows11:38
JPohlmannYep11:38
AqAJPohlmann, mkdir: cannot create directory `/media/windows': File exists11:38
JPohlmannRight. Just run the second command then.11:38
AqAwhich was first and second11:39
SlonkieAnybody know how to turn off smileys in emesene?11:39
SlonkieIn settings there's only an option of choosing "Default" smiley theme. :/11:39
JPohlmannAqA: sudo chown 1000.1000 /media/windows11:39
AqAJPohlmann, done11:40
JPohlmannAqA: Now try to mount the partition with "sudo mount /media/windows".11:40
JPohlmannYou only have to do that manually now because I don't want to make you restart your machine. After that it should be mounted automatically.11:41
JPohlmannIf it works now, that is.11:41
AqAJPohlmann, [mntent]: warning: no final newline at the end of /etc/fstab11:41
JPohlmannAqA: Add an empty line at the end of /etc/fstab then ;)11:42
JPohlmannTry to browse /media/windows with Thunar now.11:42
AqAJPohlmann, there is only my C xp partition11:43
JPohlmannAqA: But it's there, cool!11:43
JPohlmannYou'll have to do the same for the other partitions (/dev/sda5 and /dev/sda6).11:44
AqAJPohlmann, there are others all :D11:44
AqAJPohlmann, they are already there all :D11:44
AqAsudo gedit /etc/fstab11:44
JPohlmannIf you need these two:11:44
JPohlmann/dev/sda5            1218        2434     9775521    7  HPFS/NTFS11:44
JPohlmann/dev/sda6            3652        4868     9775521    7  HPFS/NTFS11:44
JPohlmannJust do the same thing again as you did for /dev/sda1. You only have to change /media/windows to something else for them, so e.g. use /media/windows-d for /dev/sda5 if that points to D:\\.11:45
JPohlmannSomething like that. It's up to you.11:45
AqAJPohlmann, why sda5 and sda6 my all partitons are already shown11:45
JPohlmannThat's weird.11:45
JPohlmannBut if they are ... fine.11:46
AqAJPohlmann, even there are /media/windows and it is with other  name "Disk" is too already present11:46
JPohlmannHmm. Maybe even C:\\ was there already before we did that fstab thing ;)11:47
JPohlmannLet me know if you have any problems with that. I'll have to prepare for Barcelona now.11:48
AqAJPohlmann, they are fine11:48
AqAJPohlmann, what line i have to insert at the end of sudo mkdir /medi11:48
AqAsudo gedit /etc/fstab **11:49
JPohlmann?11:50
AqAJPohlmann, JPohlmann> AqA: Add an empty line at the end of /etc/fstab then ;)11:51
AqAth0r, welcome back11:52
AqAJPohlmann, thanks so much for the time and help :) see u later, thanks all11:54

titan_ark_I am having trouble with 2 partitions on my external hdd, could someone help me out please12:56
_Pete_what's the exact problem with partitions?12:58
titan_ark_I have a 250 gig hdd in 5 partitions of 50 gigs each12:59
titan_ark_all ntfs12:59
titan_ark_they were working fine untill when i was burning some data out of them i got some delayed write error (in win xp) and after that they are empty13:00
titan_ark_empty in the sense that i cant see the data but free space is what it was before (i.e. ~2-3 gb in those 2 partitions)13:01
_Pete_dunno13:01
_Pete_maybe best shot is to try some windows recovery tool13:02
titan_ark_in xp only 1 drive was empty but in linux 2 drives are!13:02
titan_ark_hmmm13:02
titan_ark_and everything was just fine until i burnt data out of it :(13:02
titan_ark_i was hoping linux would have some reliable tool/ method to handle such screw ups13:03
titan_ark_no one has a solution?13:11
titan_ark_:(13:11
zethero2there must be a way to add smb privileges to the user right?13:23
AqAI am setting my screen resolution but every time i restart my xubuntu my screen resolution settings are not saved13:32
AqAسلام13:33
AqAgood13:33
SlonkieIs it possible to create a shortcut like "Filesystem" on my desktop just for another harddrive?13:43
mikechelenSlonkie, sure, just link to the mount point13:43
SlonkieWould you mind explaining that more detailed?13:44
th0rSlonkie: is the other hd mounted now? maybe /media/?13:44
mikechelenSlonkie, yeah actually add "thunar" first13:45
Slonkieah i realised.. damn things are so easy13:46
SlonkieThanks both of ya :)13:46
mikechelenhehe good to hear :)13:46
th0rSlonkie: we could make them harder if you like13:47
SlonkieNo reason to ;)13:48
SlonkieWell another question then.. Is it possible to add this link to sidepane right beneath the Filesystem link?13:49
Slonkielink/shortcut13:49
SlonkieI made a launcher on the desktop.13:49
AqAwhy it is happening with me :(( always i have to set screen resolution and always my panel things change their positions13:53
th0rSlonkie: again easy...right click the folder in thunar and send it to the side pane13:54
th0rSlonkie: and if I remember right you can order the links in the sidepane by dragging them around the sidepane13:55
SlonkieWell if i send the folder to sidepane the logo isen't what i want it to be13:56
Slonkiei wanna send the launcher to the sidepane, which isen't possible13:56
th0rSlonkie: you're right. When I created a launcher with a custom command line I found I had to actually create a bash script with the commandline and link to that13:57
th0rSlonkie: but I thought you were linking to a hard drive13:58
* Slonkie wouldn't know how to do a bash script and link to that13:58
SlonkieI am, th0r.13:58
th0rSlonkie: where is the hard drive mount point?13:58
SlonkieIt's /media/storage/13:59
th0rSlonkie: if you right click on /media/storage you should be able to add 'storage' to the sidepane13:59
Slonkieyes13:59
Slonkieas i said that doesn't have the "harddrive" icon that i want it to have.13:59
th0rSlonkie: ah....I see. I don't know of a way to change the icon14:00
SlonkieOkay :)14:00
th0rSlonkie: however...sounds like an interesting item....(going to google)14:00
Slonkie:)14:02
th0rSlonkie: those links are stored in ~/.gtk-bookmarks but there is no icon info there14:10
qwerkusHello all: I very new to scripting, and would like to know if it is possible to automate online tasks (like logging everyday into the same html/js site, updating some stuff and logging out again) via a script ? Which language would you recommand ) Perl ? Thanks for your help.14:23
th0rqwerkus: it is possible to automate daily tasks, but, for instance, once you open the firefox browser there is no way to automate what IT does14:26
th0rqwerkus: you might be able to use wget to download items from the web automatically...it is a command line program14:27
th0rqwerkus: and as far as a language you should investigate using shell scripting. There are several good tutorials on the linux documentation project (tldp.org)14:28
qwerkusknow about wget, but it cannot INTERACT with web contents14:29
th0rqwerkus: right...I don't know of any way to automate the interaction.14:29
qwerkusno problem: thanks for your help14:29
zethero2its becoming increasingly frustrating to get DVD playback to work in *buntu14:29
th0r!dvd14:30
ubottuFor multimedia issues, this page has useful information: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats - See also https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/musicvideophotos/C/video.html - But please use free formats if you can: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/FreeFormats14:30
zethero2I install the libdvdcss packages and install them etc ... and still nothing14:30
qwerkus zethero2: only one answer: MPLAYER14:30
th0rzethero2: or vlc14:30
zethero2I have been getting DVD playback going in Ubuntu for about 2 years but its never goes like they say it should14:30
qwerkus"they" ? Who's "they" ?14:31
zethero2look at what this guy says .. http://linuxmoderate.wordpress.com/2008/08/01/a-quick-look-at-xubuntu-xtreme/14:31
zethero2DVD playback worked, but not quite perfectly. Inserting a commercial DVD brought up Totem Movie Player, which couldn’t play it. VLC, however, which is one of the extras you get with Xubuntu Xtreme, played the DVD just fine14:31
th0rzethero2: I just finished a fresh install of jaunty and it went out of the box, although Totem never worked for me...I always immediately install both mplayer and vlc14:31
zethero2well I always also install VLC14:31
zethero2but that does not do the trick ..14:31
qwerkusTotem is calibrated to work only with opensource codecs14:32
zethero2mind you I am using Hardy here14:32
zethero2but still14:32
zethero2I gave up on Totaem long ago14:32
qwerkusthat's why it doesn t wok out-of-the box in most of time14:32
mikechelento play dvds with totem or mplayer requires codecs although vlc does not14:32
qwerkusone you manually configure it, it works well...14:32
qwerkusyes, but i found out vlc to be far less flexible than mplayer14:32
qwerkusof course, it can be tricky to learn all the command-line options...14:33
qwerkusFor an example: try mkv with vlc, you might be surprised !14:33
mikechelenmkv plays in vlc, performance depends on system though14:34
zethero2mikechelen: vlc never works for me unless I install some other packages ....14:34
zethero2anyhow my problem is just that I want to play a commercial DVD here and cannot .. dunno what I am missing... again14:34
mikechelenzethero2, for what kind of files? it usually seems to work for me14:34
mikechelento install codecs quickly use the ubuntu-restricted-extras package14:35
th0rzethero2: can you play ANY commercial dvds?14:35
mikechelenor xubuntu- i guess14:35
zethero2mikechelen: what do you mean by what kind of files?... its a commercial dvd ... so its .vob and .ifo etc etc14:36
zethero2th0r: nothing...14:36
zethero2ok I'll install restricted-extras14:36
mikechelenzethero2, ah ok, that probably does required restricted components14:36
th0ragreed14:36
mikecheleneven vlc will not play it?14:36
th0rmikechelen: nope14:36
th0rmikechelen: need libdvdcss214:36
zethero2I installed that already14:37
zethero2and another one14:37
zethero2libdvdread3 I think14:37
mikechelenth0r, ah okay, well once thats added then all the players should work14:37
zethero2nope14:38
qwerkuszethero2: you sure the dvd is calibrated to your geographic zone ?14:38

bytejumperHi All, How I Can have more resolutions listed in the monitor preferences dialog in XFCE4 ?18:02
viddbytejumper, those are usually the resolutions detected by x server....18:02
viddhave you run xrandr to see what resolutions that list is missing?18:03
bytejumpervidd sure, But I have a 32" flatscreen which is not detected the correct resolutions18:03
vidddoes xrandr list those "missing" resolutions?18:03
bytejumperI know the monitor should send his resolutions trough the I2C bus, but he does'nt sent it or I don't know...18:04
viddill ask again...18:04
vidddid you open terminal, and type "xrandr ?18:04
bytejumperI'm currently not on this screen, but I will try18:05
bytejumperWhat should I do if xrandr doesn't show the resolutions ?18:05
viddwe need the answer to that question (does xrandr see the missing resolutions) before we can get your desired solution18:05
viddif xrandr does NOT show the desired resolutions, then the issue is outside my knowledge and expereance to assist18:06
vidd(but it is usually an issue of the proper proprietary driver needing to be installed)18:07

vidddahaic, what ya trying to do?18:22
dahaicwell, right now, I need to do something in licensed software for my studies, so I have to connect to university VPN to be able to connect via remote desktop to our terminal server18:24
viddheh...thats insane!18:24
dahaicbut as soon as I connect to VPN, all connections start to route through it, so it disconnects me :)18:24
vidddahaic, so why not set up a VM18:25

subtwodahaic: what vpn? pptp? openvpn?18:29
dahaicpptp18:29
subtwoIn ubuntu hardy I've a successful setup with VPN to remote network but only route traffic targeted to that specific network over VPN18:30
dahaicyea, i see some checkbox like that18:31
subtwoThere is options in network-manager to enter routing rules18:31
dahaicuse this connection onliy for resources on its network?18:31
subtwoAs I said, I was running hardy and I know that network-manager has changed it's interface a bit since then so you have to try it out18:32
subtwobut, yes it sounds like it18:32
dahaicok, lets try it :)18:34
subtwoYou can easily check your routing table from the command line with: route18:35
Marcurushmm, still the same :)18:36
Marcurusat least for the irc18:36
subtwoAlso it is important that your local sub-network is different from the remote network (e.g. don't use 192.168.0.* for both networks)18:36
subtwootherwise you can't distinguish packets to route via the VPN18:37
Marcuruswell, I think I have public IP with VPN, it shouldnt interfere18:38
gamepocketsvidd: are you busy??18:38
Marcuruswell, thanks for the tips guys, I will try to fiddle with the routing table later, right now I am pressed hard by deadline :D18:39
subtwoMarcurus: good luck to you then! :-)18:40
gamepocketscan anyone help me set up a wired network?18:41
Marcurusthanks :)18:41
subtwogamepockets: (don't ask to ask!) what is the problem?18:43
gamepocketsi have a win laptop and a mac (xubuntu) want to transfer files over a wired network.18:43
subtwoRouters? DHCP?18:44
gamepocketsdlink router18:44
subtwoBoth machines are connected to the network? Do you know the IP of each computer?18:45
gamepocketsyes, ithink18:45
gamepocketsbeen using gftp but the win pc rejects connection18:46
subtwoWhat ftpserver do you use? Have you modified the firewall in windows to accept ftp connections?18:47
viddhello gamepockets18:47
subtwoAnother maybe easier way is to create a network samba share on the windows machine and connect to it with smbfs or smbclient or something from xubuntu18:47
viddgamepockets, which machine has the ftp server?18:48
gamepocketsvidd! you crafty b#st*rd... the mac (xu)18:48
viddgamepockets, if the linux box has the server, then the ftp client needs to be on the win machine18:49
gamepocketswait a sec, i can transfer to my xbox with the linbox though...18:49
* vidd recommends filezilla (filezilla-project.org) for ftp client on windows18:49
* knome recommends linux18:50
Marcurussubtwo: btw, that option worked... except that right now I dont know how to say "use the VPN" so I am deselecting it again for now :D18:50
knome;>18:50
viddgamepockets, does the xbox have an ftp server on it?18:50
gamepocketsfilezilla won't load on the win (2000 pro)18:50
gamepocketsit may, wait it has to.... i never installed a server on the lin18:50
viddgamepockets, really? i never had any issue18:51
Marcurusahah, I am marucurs.. am so stupid :/ :D18:51
gamepocketsfresh install... won;t load18:51
subtwoMarcurus: if the routing table is correctly setup you should be able to access the remote network by just accessing the remote ip18:51
viddgamepockets, then you will want to install an FTP server on a machine (i recommend doing so on the linux box)18:51
subtwoMarcurus: you may also want to tunnel DNS requests over the VPN to be able to use remote hostnames instead of IP-numbers18:52
gamepocketsok, the research into that seems a bit over my head.18:52
viddthen in M$, open windows explorer, and type address ftp://ip.of.linux.box18:52
viddgamepockets, to get the ftp server on linux: sudo apt-get install proftpd18:53
gamepocketsbut don't i need to set the M$ firewall for ftp?18:53
viddgamepockets, nope18:53
gamepocketshuh...18:53
viddby default, win2k doesnt come with a built in firewall18:53
subtwogamepockets: that is assuming you would run the ftp server on windows18:54
gamepocketsah..18:54
gamepocketswith proftp do i want to use standalone?18:55
* vidd doesnt even like to run windows on M$ machines!18:55

gamepocketsso how do i use this proftp?18:57
viddwhat do you mean?18:58
gamepocketsi don't see it. no gui?18:58
subtwogamepockets: you have to configure it. look in /etc directory for proftpd configuration files18:58
viddon your linux machine, you make sure the files you want to be able to transfer are in the /home directory18:58
viddgamepockets, you dont need a gui18:59
gamepocketsso it just "is"18:59
viddthe gui is the ftp CLIENT18:59
gamepocketsoooooh!18:59
gamepockets(lightbulb)18:59
viddjust like apache is the web server....but you see web pages in the web client program (browser)19:00
gamepocketsright..19:00
gamepocketsok, think i got it.19:00
gamepocketsonce more, your my digital saviour...19:01
viddolder versions of M$ had ftp built into the OS19:01
viddso if you open IE or WE and browse to ftp://[address] you can drag-and-drop like you can inside windows19:02
gamepocketsnice! just make sure files to share are in home dir.19:03

vinnlSee the Google cache: http://74.125.77.132/search?q=cache:pgDJkI_rp0QJ:tmxxine.com/Wikka/wikka.php%3Fwakka%3DLinuxTmxxinePrism217+Puppy+Tmxxine+3.01+Prism+mirror&cd=4&hl=en&ct=clnk&client=googlet21:37
vinnlmib_rh2ecm8t, why do you want a full install?21:38
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: they just work better - I've tried a persistent install and it isn't working.21:38
vinnlWhat method did you use?21:39
artistxevinn . vs number . very important21:39
vinnlAh, sorry21:39
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: http://www.pendrivelinux.com/usb-xubuntu-904-persistent-install-windows/#more-156421:39
vinnlmib_rh2ecm8t, you might try using the application included with the Xubuntu LiveCD to do it from there. Wait, I'll link you to a blog post of mine...21:40
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: I had a crunchbang install in this way and it worked pretty good - but there always seems to be driver issues, for example my Broadcom STA driver doesn't work so I have to stay wired for internet21:40
vinnlmib_rh2ecm8t, here: http://xubuntublog.wordpress.com/2008/11/07/ubuntu-from-your-flash-drive-easier-than-ever-before/21:41
artistxeand the pages lead me to the same dead links21:41
vinnlHmm :S21:41
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: I'll take a look21:41
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: If I try it this way, will all my hardware drivers "stick"? So I can connect to wireless networks?21:43
vinnlmib_rh2ecm8t, I believe the drivers are supposed to be included. Do you install them afterwards?21:44
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: Yeah, I usually have to enable them, but when I have used the ubuntu create-usb feature - it won't locate the drivers until I have installed the distro, it was the same in CrunchBang.21:45
mib_rh2ecm8tvinnl: Is it not possible just to install it, like on a hard drive?21:46
vinnlAh21:46
vinnlWell, I suppose it is possible, but not really recommended for the drive21:46
mib_rh2ecm8tWhy not?21:47
mib_rh2ecm8ttoo many read/write cycles?21:47
vinnlYeah21:47
vinnlThen again, I've written to mine so often and it still works :)21:48
mib_rh2ecm8tthought so =(21:48
vinnlAnd it leaves less space, I think you'll fill up 4 GB quite quickly21:48
mib_rh2ecm8tOh well, I do have a wireless adapter that's pretty small and works in ubuntu+derivatives21:48
mib_rh2ecm8tI could just try that, with CrunchBang.21:49
mib_rh2ecm8tI'll try your method; thanks =)21:50
owen1what audio should i choose? intel (alsa mixer) or realtek (OSS Mixer)22:01
viddowen1, i personally recommend the alsa22:05

=== Sinister` is now known as Sinister
owen1can i remove xubuntu-desktop but keeping xfce?22:08
owen1(with a single aptitude command)22:08
ochosiowen1, xubuntu-desktop is only a meta-package22:10
ochosiowen1, meaning: yes, you can remove it without removing xfce22:10
owen1ochosi: ok. what do i have in xubuntu-desktop that is missing from xfce?22:11
ochosiowen1, the only problems that might occur are related to your next upgrade of xubuntu to karmic22:11
owen1ochosi: what can happpend?22:11
ochosiowen1, dependency problems. you can easily work around that by installing the xubuntu-desktop package again before upgrading22:12
vinnlowen1, why do you want to remove xubuntu-desktop?22:12
owen1ochosi: i though of creating cleaner desktop.22:13
owen1ochosi: but u'r right. i'll keep it.22:13
ochosiowen1, the xubuntu-desktop package is a list of the standard set of apps from xubuntu including other stuff22:13
ochosiowen1, removing it won't make your desktop "cleaner" or "slimmer", unless you decide to remove the packages the meta-package refers to22:13
owen1ochosi: got it. thanks22:14
ochosiowen1, if you want to see the list of dependencies of xubuntu-desktop (or any package for that matter), go to synaptic, rightclick the package > properties > dependencies22:14
vinnlRandomly uninstalling stuff won't make your desktop lighter22:15
vinnlThere are much better ways to make it lighter22:15
owen1vinnl: yeah, ochosi convinced me not to do it.22:16
vinnlI'd guide you through making it lighter, but I really need to get to bed now, sorry :)22:17
owen1vinnl: no worries. thanks22:17
vinnl:)22:17
vinnlBye22:17
lesshastehow do I take a screenshot in xubuntu?22:18
owen1u can use scrot22:18
lesshastegimp seems to be missing file->acquire and alt prtsc does nothing22:18
lesshastehow can I get gimp to work?22:18
owen1just run it from terminal22:18
lesshasteis it a plugin?22:18
lesshasteI mean is there a screenshot plugin I need?22:19
owen1lesshaste: no. package22:19
lesshasteowen1, what is it?22:19
owen1lesshaste: sudo aptitude install scrot22:19
lesshasteI meant for gimp22:19
lesshastebut thanks22:19
owen1lesshaste: ahh.don't know22:19
ochosilesshaste, what version of the gimp are you using?22:20
lesshaste2.6.122:20
ochosilesshaste, and btw: there is no extra plugin. the screenshot function is included22:20
lesshastethere is no acquire menu under File22:20
ochosilesshaste, should be in file > create > screenshot, no?22:20
lesshastethanks!22:21
lesshasteI hate it when things move :)22:21
ochosiwell, i guess they tried to make the menu easier22:22
owen1when running totem i get: Gtk-Message: failed to load module "canberra-gtk-module". any clue?22:22
ochosiowen1, does totem work though?22:23
owen1no. crashes.22:23
ochosiowen1, hmm. not really a clue, at first thought it might be related to your gtk-theme, but now i'm not so sure about that anymore22:23
owen1i'll google for it. thank22:30
owen1i want to remove some entries from the xfce menu but the 'xfce menu' option (it's the first item) is disabled. any ideas?23:01
th0rowen1: there is not a good menu editor for xfce, but you can change it by editing the .desktop files in /usr/share/...just a sec23:07
owen1th0r: i used to tweak the menu by choosing the first option on the menu. from some reason it's disabled now.23:08
th0rowen1: jeez...getting old...have to look things up. /usr/share/applications. If you want to hide an entry just add the line 'NoDisplay=true' to the end of the file. If you want to add an entry just copy one of the existing ones and edit it23:08
owen1th0r: great. i'll try it.23:08
owen1what .desktop do i need to edit? i want to tweak the menu.23:12
th0rowen1: the menu is created on the fly from the .desktop files. What do you want to do?23:16
owen1th0r: remove those entries: help, Abount Xfce and Log Out.23:17
th0rowen1: ok....just a sec23:17
owen1th0r: those are the last 3 entries on the xfce menu23:17
owen1th0r: i see xfce4-help-desktop. maybe i can delete it?23:18
th0rowen1: don't delete it....add that line I mentioned to the bottom. That will hide it in case you ever need it.23:19
owen1th0r: ok.23:19
th0rowen1: no reboot necessary....it should immediately take effect in the menu23:19
owen1th0r: i added NoDisplay=true at the end of xfce4-help.desktop but i still see the 'help' entry .23:21
th0rowen1: did you edit it using sudo...you can't save it as yourself....need root access23:21
th0rowen1: do 'sudo mousepad <filename.desktop>23:22
owen1th0r: sudo vim (-:23:22
th0rowen1: I just hid both help and about that way23:22
th0rowen1: showoff23:22
owen1th0r: let me try the about23:22
th0rowen1: if you look over the contents of a couple of those you will see why they sometimes appear in the menu with different names, and sometimes in two or more submenus23:23
owen1th0r: it works for the about file.23:24
th0rowen1: have you ever used 'mc'?23:24
owen1no. what's that?23:24
th0rowen1: it is a console file manager. You can invoke it with 'sudo mc' and it is terrific for doing simple editing of several files like you are doing now23:25
owen1th0r: is it like norton commander ?23:25
th0rowen1: right...two panes much like nc23:25
th0rowen1: got the name there...midnight commander23:25
owen1th0r: interesting. there is also a textbased file manager with vim-like keys.23:26
owen1th0r: don't remember the name. vimfm or something.23:26
th0rowen1: well...I always had to struggle with vi so I am glad to find any alternatives <smile>23:27
owen1th0r: print the vim's key mapping or set it as your background for a month.23:28
th0rowen1: nano works just as well for simple files when I don't want mc23:28
owen1th0r: i learend vim and dvorak at the same time. fun!23:29
th0rowen1: never tried dvorak...but those who use it seem to swear by it23:29
owen1th0r: what do u think of the help menu? it's still there..23:29
th0rowen1: mine isn;t....check for a typo23:30
owen1th0r: nevermind. it's not a big deal.23:36
th0rowen1: check for a duplicate. Do you have findutils installed?23:36
owen1th0r: yes23:37
th0rowen1: locate xfce4-help.desktop23:38
th0rowen1: I added NoDisplay=true to the bottom of that file and the menu item disappeared.23:38
owen1th0r: me too but it didn't..23:38
owen1th0r: nevermind. i have bigger issue. totem crashes with gtk-messege error.23:39
th0rowen1: dump it for vlc or mplayer23:39
owen1mplayer works but when i open some files with it i get wierd error messege. (but it plays the file)23:40
th0rowen1: yeah...that is why my first default is vlc. Some of my files do give mplayer fits23:40
owen1th0r: i am trying to restore some files from the Trash using thunar and get permission denied.23:43
owen1th0r: any clue?23:43
th0rowen1: did you delete them using sudo?23:43
owen1th0r: no. just drag and drop from thunar.23:44
th0rowen1: let me take a look at something23:44
owen1i did it from terminal, but it's weird.23:46
th0rowen1: ok...~/.local/share/Trash23:46
owen1yead.23:46
owen1yeah23:46
th0rowen1: strange. I haven't tried drag and drop yet....let me give it a go and see....23:46
th0rnope...works as advertised23:47
owen1th0r: now it's working. not sure what happened.23:47
owen1th0r: there is a wm based on openbox. i don't remember the name. something like xlce. have u heard of it?23:52
th0rowen1: doesn't ring a bell.23:53
owen1th0r: http://www.lxde.org/23:54
owen1if anyone tried it and can compare to xubuntu, please share.23:56
Aqahello so no solution for me screen resolution problem? any website to report this problem?23:58
