ign0ramustemplaedhel, you've tried both login managers, and neither work?00:01
templaedhelyes00:01
gabrieloh. there is a way to do it from windows.... but I'll have to look it up.00:01
ign0ramustemplaedhel, and if you run "xrandr --output LVDS --mode 1920x1080" in terminal, it changes nothing?00:02
templaedhelcorrect00:02
ign0ramustemplaedhel, hmm... let me see if there's another way00:03
templaedhelign0ramus: remember, we are now looking for a way to add it for both gnome and kde, no longer a isolated issue00:04
ign0ramustemplaedhel, well, the original method was to have the xrandr script run with gdm/kdm, but now i'm checking xorg.conf, which would be a global change (in your case)00:04

ign0ramustemplaedhel, you may want to see here : http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=8397300:06
ign0ramustemplaedhel, i can't walk you through it, because it kills X00:06
templaedhelI have done the sudo dpkg reconfigure xorg-conf before, it used to work, but now all it does is detect my keyboard00:07
ign0ramustemplaedhel, the command is "  sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg " ... that's what you ran?00:08
templaedhelyes00:08
templaedhelI used to always fall back on it when I was fucking around with my display, and things got messed up, but now it doesn't do anything00:09
gabrielwell, I am not sure now. usb-creator requires GnomeVFS00:12
gabrielhold on..00:13
ign0ramustemplaedhel, when you run it, the first question should be: "Attempt monitor autodetection?" ... you don't get that option?00:13
templaedhelwill it do it if I run in the terminal, wthout killing X?00:14

susbwoyHi, using kubuntu 9.04 and vlc0.9.9a. Trying to play a dvd in vlc, menu loads up fine, however when I click on an episode, vlc crashes like this - http://pastebin.com/m6b1c30d1. Pretty sure it has something to do with ALSA because I get sound when i use UNIX->OSS (/dev/dsp1) in vlc settings. But just curious to know why vlc seg faults using ALSA for DVD, because vlc runs everything else fine(divx/mp3 etc) with ALSA.00:23

jimbobukshould kubuntu support most onboard gfx properly out of the box or is it likely i'll have to add something to get it working?02:06

binskipy2uoh..05:54
claydohactually, 4.3 is beta iirc05:55
binskipy2uso install kubuntu 4.2.2., add the ppa repo, do a full distro upgrade, then tweak /add,remove what you want program wise?05:55
binskipy2udont worry bout that FIRST update when you install 4.2.205:55
claydohbinskipy2u: I usually install, update/upgrade then add apps and tweak05:55
Barridusbinskipy2u, tell me what you're doing exactly.  have linux/ubuntu and thinking of adding/switching to kde?05:55
_nix_binskipy2u: it _shouldn't_ break anything05:55
Barridusor are you doing a fresh install05:55
binskipy2uwhen you install Kubuntu (fresh install) and it says it has like 66 updates..05:56
_nix_I'd update first05:56
binskipy2uif you install kubuntu fresh, and add the ppa repo and update it, it has over 150 updates05:56
Barridusi'd prolly just upgrade/update first regardless05:56
Barridusi mean why waste time mucking about with settings, just do the updates05:56
binskipy2uso i'm asking do i do a default install, first update, then add the ppa repo and THEN do a dist-upgrade05:57
binskipy2uor just install, add ppa, and do a dist-upgrade05:57
claydohbinskipy2u: yup05:57
claydohfirst is saner05:57
_nix_binskipy2u: the latter05:57
binskipy2usorry if i sound like a broken record, dont wanna break anything05:57
_nix_lol05:57
binskipy2uor make myself work too hard05:57
binskipy2ulol05:57
_nix_binskipy2u: actually, doing update first and then adding ppa repo would conform with the "timeline"05:58
Barriduswell if you're doing fresh it should be worry free05:58
claydohinstall, check everything works, update, add repos, upgrade then gave at it :)05:58
_nix_binskipy2u: what claydon said05:58
binskipy2usounds good _nix05:58
Barridusif it goes to crap, just wipe it and install fresh again05:58

JuJuBeeMamarok: Rebooted with some success, networking not functioning.  I recall I installed wicd, but it is not functioning.  Can I donwload the package and install it manually some how?18:54
Yanick_ok, I got it to work, had to remove the ending amd6418:55
Yanick_but now it says that no package cache is available18:56
Yanick_ok.... I cannot list anything in KPackageKit18:57
MamarokJuJuBee: well, you need to do sudo apt-get update first, to make sure your sources in /var/apt/cache are updated18:59
JuJuBeeMamarok: not possible without networking...19:00
prasanth_how i add 2 more user19:00
MamarokJuJuBee: right...19:01
JuJuBeeMamarok: gonna download the .deb from sourceforge and do manual install see if that helps...19:01
MamarokJuJuBee: no, as it is in the repositories19:01
MamarokJuJuBee: you can download the .deb file from ubuntu19:01
Yanick_"The package list needs to be rebuilt." how do I do that?19:01
JuJuBeeMamarok: The links in forums seem to point to sourceforge...19:02
MamarokJuJuBee: wait, I'll check19:03
JuJuBeeK19:03
MamarokJuJuBee: it's in the Universe repositories, you should be able to find it by googling for wicd package Ubuntu I think19:04

Yanick_Mamarok, yes yes, I did that and I tried to add a repository which ended up screwing my sources.list file. I corrected the problem with vim19:08
MamarokYanick_: so it works now?19:08
JuJuBeeThanks Mamarok got it.19:09
Mamarokgood :)19:09
Yanick_I was trying to add a url without the "deb" in front of it (because I'm not familiar with Kubuntu just yet) and KPackageKit added a bunch of http://... in my sources.list file thus rendering the package update impossible19:09
Yanick_my point is that KPackageKit screwed up my sources.list file when I added an invalid repository link19:10
MamarokYanick_: well, adding invalid repositories screws up the sources.list, so you can't blame KPackagekit19:11
JuJuBeeMamarok: gonna reboot and try to install see what happens...19:11
Yanick_Mamarok, ...so much to make Ubuntu user friendly....19:12
shadeslayerMamarok: btw did you talk to the devels about the packaging of 4.3 ?19:12
MamarokYanick_: hey, you added the invalid repos, you can't blame the application then :)19:12

Yanick_Mamarok, why the application didn't warn me?19:13
Mamarokshadeslayer: well, as they are busy with Karmic and they are not many, you will have to be patient19:13

Yanick_Mamarok, my point exactly19:13
shadeslayerMamarok: ah...thats fine...theyll be releasing beta 2 on the 9th so hopefully it will be fixed :)19:14
Yanick_Mamarok, what about grandma who would install Kubuntu, then (let's say) want to install a new super repository location... whatever, then have that message popping up... lol19:14
Yanick_anyway19:14
Mamarokshadeslayer: KDE will release beta2, no idea when it will end up in the most experimental ppa...19:15
Yanick_invalid repository urls should not be added to the sources.list by the gui19:15
shadeslayerYanick_: first of all, grandma wouldnt add some weirdo repo :P19:15
MamarokYanick_: *all* apt-get frontends do that, it's not KPackagekit...19:15
Yanick_shadeslayer, heh. sure! :P19:15
DekansYanick_: additionnal repos are not for Grandma19:16
shadeslayerYanick_: she would just want the PC to be fast and zippy and a IM and a Music player at the most19:16
Yanick_blah. it's a problem. don't fix it and leave scared little users away. +1 for making Ubuntu more popular lol19:16

monolithWhat's the best part of the Linux File system (other than /home and swap) to put on a diffrent physical drive to the rest of it?19:28
sparrmonolith: /opt if you use it19:30
JuJuBeeMamarok:19:30
JuJuBeeMamarok: Got the networking up at least wired...19:31
monolithsparr: I don't really. It's safe to put any part of it on a seperate drive really isn't it? Would /var work or is that a bad idea?19:33
jimbobukanyone know where i can set my runlevel to get a console login rather than windows manager one?19:34
Dragnslcrmonolith- /var is what I was about to suggest, or maybe even just /var/log if you're running a lot of services19:34
monolithDragnslcr: Not really, So just /var I guess. The reason I ask is because currently all of / (not includeing /home) is squished into 10GB. I got a new drive to hold / on and I figure I may as well put something in the old 10GB space and make use of multiple drives.19:36
DragnslcrA 10 GB drive, or a partition on a larger drive?19:37
fakocerobuona sera19:38
JuJuBeeCan I resize my partitions without re formatting?19:38
monolithDragnslcr: A partion on a larger drive. It's a 150GB WD Raptor. I use the rest of the space for Vista (I use it for games, and they take up a lot of space.)19:39
DragnslcrJuJuBee- usually, yeah19:39
JuJuBeeI want to take about 30G from / and give it to /home19:39
JuJuBeeDragnslcr: I need to boot from live CD?19:39
Dragnslcrmonolith- I dunno about Vista, but I was going to suggest just giving the space back to the other partition. It isn't really worth keeping a 10 GB partition around19:40
DragnslcrJuJuBee- I think so. I don't think either partition can be mounted when you resize them19:41
monolithDragnslcr: So their's no performance gains to be had for haveing / spread about? I assume you mean to keep Swap where it is (on the raptor)19:41
JuJuBeeDragnslcr: makes sense.  What should I use to resize?19:41
DragnslcrJuJuBee- I think gparted is installed by default on the LiveCD19:41
JuJuBeeK, thanks.  I will give it a try...19:42
DragnslcrJuJuBee- it's always a good idea to back up stuff before messing around with partitions, just in case19:42
Dragnslcrmonolith- there's a bit of a performance gain, but it might not be enough to be noticeable on a typical home computer19:43
JuJuBeeI just learned my lesson.   lost /var and had to restore from an old backup.  need to reconstruct my mysql db's ... several changes since last backup as  well as stuff in my vm...19:43
DragnslcrYeah, I need to get my backups running again too19:43
monolithJuJuBee: I keep my MySQL databases in /home. =)19:44
JuJuBeemonolith: how do I change where mysql stores them?19:44
JuJuBeethey defaulted to /var/lib/mysql19:45
monolithJuJuBee: I don't remember, but I think it can be specified in the MySQL configuration files. My /home is on a RAID array so I felt safer with the dabases in /home/mysql. =)19:48

ubottuEnvyNG is a program to install newer version of nVidia or ATi drivers, it can be found in !Universe as "envyng-gtk" (for Gtk/Gnome) or "envyng-qt" (for Qt/KDE). It is NOT a supported method to install video drivers; please only use it if standard methods fail and at your own risk - See also !BinaryDrver23:04
