newz2000hey MTecknology: sorry I missed your ping over the weekend, I'm here now if you still need me14:48
MTecknologynewz2000: I was just curious about the whole banner thing, you think there's any chance that I won't need to host the countdown banner stuff?17:02
newz2000MTecknology: I looked at your code a little while back and it's not clear to me what the purpose of the project is17:03
MTecknologynewz2000: It's just a really simple module to make it easy for somebody using Drupal to add a countdown banner to their site. All they need to do is enable it and set the block wherever they want it to appear (like any module). The cache piece will allow up to one update/day and it builds a list of available options (1, 2, 3, etc, and a noscript option). All that is pulled from a directory on another server. There's a link17:08
MTecknologyI still need to clean up the code and add comments17:08
jpdsa lin?17:08
MTecknologyhm?17:08
jpdsYou got cut off at "There's a lin"17:09
newz2000just a min, in a phone call17:09
MTecknologyThere's a link to http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown so they can see what each option is. There's a few advanced options, but that's basically all it does17:09
MTecknologyI made it because there were a lot of people asking me for something like that. Right now they need to go into the theme source code for whatever theme they're using and add the code themselves. With the module, it's more of a drop in deal.17:10
MTecknologyAll I need is a static location for them to download text files of what the countdown options are.17:12
MTecknologyIf you allowed the module access to the source for all the images and everything else I could just have the thing dload everything and use relative links to the site it's running on, which would make a lot less load on your servers (but I see where that's possibly a big security risk)17:14
MTecknologyApprently Drupal now has a line like this (SetHandler Drupal_Security_Do_Not_Remove_See_SA_2006_006) which breaks things17:42
MTecknologynewz2000: I think modifying the script to retrieve a .tgz file would be a better idea.17:43
MTecknologyI need to shower and get cleaned up - bbiab17:44
newz2000ok, sorry, will catch up in a moment and reply for you to read when you return later on17:44
MTecknologyback18:00
MTecknologyI looked into the Drupal change, a tarball is about the only sensible option now. It'd be simple enough to have the tarball have either a full set of images and everything or still have it contain only the code to grab things from ubuntu.com18:07
MTecknologyI'd be willing to make the tarball too :P18:09
MTecknologyoh, the javascript files could handle a little change too - so they can be a static file rather than need to be changed on release day18:11
MTecknologyand I just realized why it isn't done like that - that way you guys control the exact second the banners change. So a tarball with a few simple text files would make the msot sense. Small download size18:17
MTecknologyI'll check back every little bit - I need to work on an MS Office '07 class... :(18:18
MTecknologynewz2000: you're an incredibly busy person, aren't you?18:31
newz2000hey, it comes and goes19:07
newz2000lately Monday's have been busy for me because of meetings, but also I was taking a vacation last Friday until yesterday19:08
newz2000so my monday is a little heavier because of the catch up19:08
MTecknologyfun stuff - I don't get to work much at my current job because of a really screwed up disk19:09
MTecknologyI do about 3 days a week,  I had 3 epidural blocks in the last month, surgery a year ago, and still a lot of pain. But I'm only 21 atm - maybe some killer new disk replacement will become available before I get too old for it19:10
newz2000oh, that kind of disk19:13
newz2000I thought you meant a technical problem. :-)19:13
MTecknologylol :P19:13
newz2000ok, caught up19:15
newz2000here's my concern...19:15
newz2000because of caching issues around release day we don't use server side dynamic content to point to the location19:16
newz2000instead we use javascript19:16
MTecknologyyup, I saw that19:16
MTecknologyI'm just looking for a way that the module can download a copy of the code at http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/countdown. Each option in a single text file, with a symlink for a noscript option19:17
newz2000since we never know the precise time of the final release the last day shows a "day zero" image until we manually update the js saying 'it's ready'19:18
MTecknologyI think I got really really wordsy above to say that last line19:18
newz2000just a min, getting another interruption19:19
MTecknologylol19:19
MTecknologynewz2000: I'll send you a file of what I think would be best19:22
newz2000ok, that's a good way to start19:22
MTecknologyunpack in it's own dir or it'll expload19:22
newz2000ok19:22
MTecknologysent19:23
MTecknologymaybe....19:24
MTecknologydo you have an @ubuntu email addy?19:24
MTecknologyor do I need @canonical ?19:24
MTecknologythere we go19:26
MTecknologynewz2000: you get a chance to look at that yet?21:06
MTecknologyjpds: wow... moving the website is REALLY killing the thing21:14
MTecknologyhurray :D21:22
MTecknologyI think I need to redo sd.ubuntu-us.com from scratch21:54
MTecknology.org*21:58
MTecknologywhy am I doing this again? I'm starting w/ a clean slate... now I need to restore all permissions settings then all the content22:27
MTecknologyHURRAY! I rebuilt the site23:19
MTecknologynot all content back, but the really important stuff is23:19
