robert__I'm sorry, my computer crashed. The video card came unseated, heh. Fixed it, though.00:03
robert__I'm Procrasticus. Cursed thing, I told it to set my name to that, and it didn't.00:05
robert__Okay, I think I'm in the clear now. Thanks for the help, cody-somerville. See you later.00:15
newfie_richhey all, Can anyone lead me to a good support page to set up dial up Internet, I am one step up from a newbie01:01
Joelitodoes anyone know how to develop plugins for listen01:02
OvernightPRAnyone out there able to help with some problems that I've been having with critical libxfcemixer errors preventing xfce4 panel from loading?02:22
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, What version of Xubuntu are you running?02:42
OvernightPRcody-somerville the latest, I think. I should probably check.02:42
OvernightPR:">02:42
OvernightPR9.04, yes.02:43
OvernightPRWould you like the actual error messages?02:45
OvernightPRI can't find anything when I search for 'em.02:45
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, The actual error would be appreciated, yes.02:48
OvernightPRI get 3.02:49
OvernightPRIn ordeer:02:49
cody-somervillePlease pastebin them02:49
cody-somervilledon't paste them here02:49
OvernightPRWill do.02:49
OvernightPRBut let me start at the beginning.02:49
OvernightPRXubuntu loads, but xfce4 panel does not.02:50
OvernightPRIf I right click the desktop, I get a menu. When I load terminal and run xfce4-panel from the default directory, I get...02:50
OvernightPR(one second while I paste in pastebin)02:50

OvernightPRHowdy, procrasticus03:01
ProcrasticusHi there03:02
ProcrasticusHow's it going?03:02
OvernightPROkay.03:03
OvernightPRYou a xubuntu expert type, or are you here looking for help?03:03
ProcrasticusOh, definitely not an expert. I came here because I had to check my conversation log from earlier and because I'm unfamiliar with IRC this was the fastest way to do it03:12
ProcrasticusI got the information I needed, then discovered it would do me no good.03:12
Procrasticus*You* a xubuntu expert type?03:13
OvernightPRHeh. No. I'm hoping for one to wander by, 'coz I need some help.03:15
ProcrasticusWell I'm sorry to hear that, for both our sakes.03:16
ProcrasticusYou fresh in from Windows too?03:16
OvernightPRNot quite.03:17
OvernightPRBeen using xubuntu on my netbook for a while.03:17
OvernightPRCall me slightly smarter than dumb.03:18
OvernightPR:D03:18
OvernightPRMy Google Fu gets me through many things.03:18
OvernightPRBut I had a sudden error message crop up on my wife's netbook with no discernible cause and I can't track it down.03:18
OvernightPRSo I thought I'd ask for help. But *man* is it dead in here today.03:19
ProcrasticusYeah, I've been here off and on over the last few days, it never seems to be busy. Everytime I saw someone who was trying to help, it was just one person. Never any more than that.03:26
OvernightPRI had one guy who asked some questions about my issue named cody-somerville, but he's been silent this last half hour and more.03:27
ProcrasticusWas being aided by cody-somerville earlier today, but that's it. I don't know how there can be fifty-five users in a room that's so quiet.03:27
cody-somervilleIts usually quite a bit more active during European and North American working hours03:28
ProcrasticusOh, you too, then. Yeah, good guy. Kinda slow to respond, but I just assumed he was busy with something.03:28
OvernightPRI think that most of 'em are probably people with always-on connections at work.03:28
OvernightPR...and, as I was about to say, are likely home for the evening/03:28
OvernightPRI'd figured cody got busy with real life. :D03:29
cody-somerville:]03:29
ProcrasticusHadn't considered that. Makes sense.03:29
cody-somervilleWhen you run xfce4-panel from the terminal, does it start and just show those errors or does it fail to start all together?03:30
OvernightPRActually, xfce4-panel starts and runs perfectly, as far as I can tell except for the audio mixer. As long as I don't type anything else in that terminal window or close it.03:31
OvernightPRI am perplexed, I say.03:31
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, Lets try this03:34
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, Login, open your terminal, and then run this: xfce4-panel &03:34
cody-somervilleThe & will background the process.03:34
cody-somervilleThen logout and when you do be sure the "Save session for future logins" checkbox is checked03:35
OvernightPRHm. running that in the background should minimize the terminal window, right?03:36
OvernightPRWindow didn't minimize. And it didn't prompt to save.03:37
OvernightPR...on the bright side, though, the panel did display when I logged back in.03:39
OvernightPRAnd the terminal remains open.03:39
cody-somerville& wouldn't make the terminal minimize03:39
OvernightPRWell then. That's not puzzling, is it? :P03:40
OvernightPRAnyhoo: That seems to be a somewhat hacky solution, since the audio mixer is still non-functional. Any other ideas, cody?03:43
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, The mixer not working seems to be a separate issue03:44
cody-somervilleOvernightPR, The panel issue is resolved, correct?03:44
OvernightPRPerhaps?03:44
OvernightPRLet me try shutting down the terminal completely and logging the computer out and in.03:44
OvernightPROne second here03:44
OvernightPRBrilliant!03:46
OvernightPRLooks like that worked.03:46
OvernightPRThanks.03:46
owen1i get "failed to execute child process" when trying to run a script i created in ~/bin. it's an executable and ~/bin is in $PATH. when running from terminal it's working. any ideas?04:21
owen1it fail from xfrun404:22
owen1but works from terminal.04:22
OvernightPRowen1:04:23
OvernightPRSounds like your problem is not Xubuntu specific. I'd ask the folks at #ubuntu, because that's a livlier forum at the moment.04:23
owen1OvernightPR: but xfrun4 is in xubuntu. is it exist in ubuntu?04:24
OvernightPRAh. One sec.04:24
owen1this is the alt+F2 application launcher.04:25
OvernightPRWhat version of xfrun4 is that?04:28
OvernightPR4.4.1-1?04:28
owen1dpkg -l | grep xfrun4 ?04:30
owen1how to find the version?04:35
OvernightPRYou could use dpkg, yeah.04:36
OvernightPR--info, I believe04:36
OvernightPR--version, sorry04:37
OvernightPRBTW, dpkg --help will help you with that.04:37
owen1dpkg -l | grep xfr    shows nothing04:40
OvernightPRLet's start with this, then: you running Xubuntu 9.04?04:43
owen1OvernightPR: yes04:43
OvernightPRSo you should be running xfrun 4.6.0-1 unless you changed anything, which means you don't have the bug I was thinking about.04:44
owen1but i don't see xfrun in dpkg..04:45
OvernightPRIt's part of xfce.04:45
OvernightPRIncluded therein.04:45
OvernightPRWell...04:46
OvernightPRxfce4-utils.04:46
OvernightPRWhich is what you need to look at in dpkg.04:46
OvernightPRXfrun is part of that package.04:46
owen1 4.6.0-1ubuntu204:46
OvernightPRYeah. That's the current one.04:47
OvernightPRThe only thing I could think off of the top of my head was that bug I knew of in 4.4.1-1.04:47
OvernightPRWhich you don't have.04:47
OvernightPRSorry I can't be of any more help; I don't really do a lot of scripting.04:47
OvernightPRIf you check back in during normal working hours in the US, you'll find a lot more response in this chat room,04:48
owen1it used to work untill i had backed up my home, deleted it and brought the backup back to home.04:48
owen1i thought it's permission isuue, but i guess it's not.04:49
owen1thanks for the help04:49

BreetaiHi all, How do you get the shoutcast stations to show up in the Listen Media Player?16:08
mikubuntuhaving probs with cd/dvd writer ... trying to burn 9.04, but at the end of burn, it stays interminably in the 'finishing write' state ... i interrupted at that point and tried to boot from that disk; machine says 'searching for boot grub' but then boots from hdd.  yes, i set bios to boot from cd first.17:01
NiobHello everyone!18:16
NiobI've looked through the xubuntu wiki and the instructions on the site, yet I can't find any info on how to upgrade from Xubuntu 7.1018:18
Niobthere's only a note that 'if you have 8.10 or newer you can upgrade...'18:18
NiobI already have new 9.04 CD, would it be OK to try to boot from it and install it on the 7.10?18:19
NiobI'm asking because I'm rather new on the linux field... oh, I don't mind losing my current installation18:19
zoredacheyou should be able to upgrade from 7.10 -> 8.04 -> 8.10 -> 9.0418:20
Nioball right, I've found some info on: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UpgradeNotes#From%207.10%20or%206.06%20LTS%20to%208.04%20LTS18:21
zoredacheyou could also just backup your home directory and the configuration, and then reinstall18:21
Niobit says: 'or simply do a clean/fresh install of 8.04 LTS (Hardy)'18:21
Niobwhat should I do to make a clean install?18:22
Niobdo I need to format the partition or what? :D18:22
Niobguess it's just a stupid habit from Windows ;D18:22
zoredachemaking a backup of data and configuration is the most important...  Formatting is probably a good idea, or else you would have lots of orphaned files18:23
NiobI don't want to get through 8.04 and all the rest18:23
NiobI haven't used my linux for a long time, that's why I don't need to backup18:23
Nioberm... is it possible to format via booting LiveCD?18:25
NiobI guess there is a way apart from 'format C:'...18:25
Nioboh, I have altenate CD and it's a dual-boot with Win98 if it matters18:27
Slonkiehmm i can't seem to figure out how to update grub :/ anyone?18:28
TheSheep!grub18:29
ubottuGRUB is the default Ubuntu boot manager. Lost GRUB after installing Windows? See https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestoreGrub - GRUB how-tos: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/GrubHowto18:29
Nioboh, please, guys, I know it's not supported anymore, that's why I want to upgrade it :] I hope it's not too difficult18:29
Nioband thanks zoredache for a hint18:29
Niobumm.. I smell fresh xubuntu is already burned, maybe I can figure it out by myself... formatting can't be too difficult :]18:31
Niobjust one important detail - should I do anything with LILO?18:33
moodogEvening :)18:33
Niobsuppose I format or wipe or annihilate or whatever my previous-unsupported-xubuntu-that-noone-knows-how-to-uprade-anymore...18:34
Niobwhat's to become of my LILO? :D18:34
Niobevening18:35
SlonkieI don't see any info on updating it, TheSheep :(18:35
TheSheepSlonkie: what do you mean by updating?18:35
SlonkieAccording to the wiki, the grub that comes with 8.10 doesn't support ext4. And i need ext4 support - which means i have to update it18:36
TheSheepwell, if you don't know how to do that, you probably shouldn't mess with it but install 9.04 instead18:37
NiobI really thought you guys would be more helpful18:37
SlonkieI have 9.0418:37
Slonkiebut i updatet from 8.1018:37
TheSheepSlonkie: what's the problem exactly? you get any errors?18:38
SlonkieI get Error 15 - File not found when trying to boot into my Arch which in on a ext4 partition18:38
TheSheepSlonkie: try grub-install from your 9.0418:42
SlonkieUsage: grub-install [OPTION] install_device18:42
Slonkiewhat option would that be?18:43
TheSheepno option, just the device18:43
TheSheep/dev/sda or whatever you use18:43
Slonkiesay this xubuntu is installed in sda3.. it would be /dev/sda3/ ?18:43
Slonkiethat gives me "/dev/sda3/: Not found or not a block device."18:45

Niobwhich definiteley isn't the very best solution, is it21:11
cody-somervilleNiob, run update-grub21:13
Niobthank you so much for the quick answer, I'm getting desperate here ;)21:14
Nioberm... my mouse doesn't seem to work21:15
tyler609hmmm, when i hit the default button on gparted it stopped in a line a of code21:15
tyler609i assume thats bad... O.o21:15

tyler609havnt tried that yet, guess i will21:18
Niobhttp://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=206467: I totally agree with you, this issue should be fixed ASAP, otherwise this will keep newbies (like me) away from linux.21:19
Niobthat's a good quote :]21:19
Niob@cody-somerville: still, I guess I can run update-grub21:20
palinif gparted fail mounting your harddrive. does not look good :( but see what dft give you21:20
tyler609yeah i figured21:20
mikubuntupalin, i don't understand what virtualbox is or how it will help ...21:27

mikubuntuif you see the prob is that the writer doesn't seem to complete the burn; it locks up in the 'finishing write' stage21:28
palinIt is a virtual machine software smaller download. it will let you boot off th iso and see if the iso is good. also good for testing, if that your thing. you can try a differnt cdr software xfburn  is a good one21:30

zoredacheedoceo: if your dhcp server is setup correctly it should already be pushing the domain name that is used for searching...22:03
edoceoIt does .....22:04
edoceoOh! here's the issue someone has overwritten my config....grrrrrr22:05
NiobI'm really sorry to ask for your assistance again, yet I'm worried that if I delete the linux partition via LiveCD I'd be left with not working GRUB and no option to boot Win9822:15
Niobdo I need to rewrite something in the MBR?22:15
Niobas now, after a clean install of Xubuntu 9.04 GRUB doesn't see my Win9822:16
Niobas LILO did on 7.1022:16
Nioband update-grub didn't solve the problem22:16
Niobas somebody suggested22:16
zoredacheNiob: do you have a windows 98 install cd?  You should be able to boot off it and get a dos prompt.  Once you do run 'fdisk /mbr'22:17
NiobOK, thanks. Is deleting the partition from LiveCD the best option to get rid of it?22:18
Niobmaybe I can swich to LILO and solve the problem?22:18
zoredacheNiob: I would fix the boot-loader before you delete the partition.22:18
Niobbut fixing it via fdisk would make my linux dead, right?22:19
zoredacheyeah22:20
NiobI'm reading this: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=50477822:20
Niobmaybe editing grub conf could help...22:20

Niob@zoredache: VICTORY! I manually edited my boot-loader :]22:33
Niobnow I don't have to delete linux22:33
